Considering the effects of noise on the amplitude of long-latent auditory evoked potentials, it is concluded that masking interference diminishes the right hemisphere dominance in the processing of the non-speech acoustic information. The decrease is observed both with the monotic and dichotic delivery of signals and noise. With monotic presentation masking interference also decreases the extent of the lateralization of monaurally delivered information predominantly to the contralateral hemisphere.  相似文献

Temporal summation was estimated by measuring the detection thresholds for pulses with durations of 1–50 ms in the presence of noise maskers. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of the spectral profiles and intensities of noise maskers on temporal summation, to investigate the appearance of signs of peripheral processing of pulses with various frequency-time structures in auditory responses, and to test the opportunity to use temporal summation for speech recognition. The central frequencies of pulses and maskers were similar. The maskers had ripple structures of the amplitude spectra of two types. In some maskers, the central frequencies coincided with the spectrum humps, whereas in other maskers, they coincided with spectrum dip (so-called on- and off-maskers). When the auditory system differentiated the masker humps, then the difference between the thresholds of recognition of the stimuli presented together with each of two types of maskers was not equal to zero. The assessment of temporal summation and the difference of the thresholds of pulse recognition under conditions of the presentation of the on- and off-maskers allowed us to make a conclusion on auditory sensitivity and the resolution of the spectral structure of maskers or frequency selectivity during presentation of pulses of various durations in local frequency areas. In order to estimate the effect of the dynamic properties of hearing on sensitivity and frequency selectivity, we changed the intensity of maskers. We measured temporal summation under the conditions of the presentation of on- and off-maskers of various intensities in two frequency ranges (2 and 4 kHz) in four subjects with normal hearing and one person with age-related hearing impairments who complained of a decrease in speech recognition under noise conditions. Pulses shorter than 10 ms were considered as simple models of consonant sounds, whereas tone pulses longer than 10 ms were considered as simple models of vowel sounds. In subjects with normal hearing in the range of moderate masker intensities, we observed an enhancement of temporal summation when the short pulses or consonant sounds were presented and an improvement of the resolution of the broken structure of masker spectra when the short and tone pulses, i.e., consonant and vowel sounds, were presented. We supposed that the enhancement of the summation was related to the refractoriness of the fibers of the auditory nerve. In the range of 4 kHz, the subject with age-related hearing impairments did not recognize the ripple structure of the maskers in the presence of the short pulses or consonant sounds. We supposed that these impairments were caused by abnormal synchronization of the responses of the auditory nerve fibers induced by the pulses, and this resulted in a decrease in speech recognition.  相似文献

Gender differences in changes of coherence values in the theta and alpha frequency bands during encoding of dichotically and monaurally presented verbal information were studied. Right-handed students (14 male and 14 female subjects) participated in experiments. The EEG was recorded from 16 electrodes placed at homologous sites of the left and the right hemispheres. In male subjects, numerous differences in coherence values between conditions of dichotical and monaural word presentation were found in the theta2- and alpha1-bands, in females, the differences were most pronounced in the theta1- and theta2-frequency bands. Numerous differences in coherence values differentiated between dichotic and left-sided monaural presentations in males and between dichotic and right-sided monaural presentations in females. As compared to dichotic presentation, in condition of the monaural presentation, higher coherence values were observed in men and lower in women. The features of gender differences in frequency-spatial patterns of changes in EEG coherence values under conditions of bilaterally and unilaterally directed attention in male and female groups may testify that female subjects predominantly use right-hemispheric processing strategy, whereas male subjects use, mainly, left-hemispheric strategy for selection and memorization of concrete nouns.  相似文献

Summary This paper investigates the ability of neurons in the barn owl's (Tyto alba) inferior colliculus to sense brief appearances of interaural time difference (ITD), the main cue for azimuthal sound localization in this species. In the experiments, ITD-tuning was measured during presentation of a mask-probe-mask sequence. The probe consisted of a noise having a constant ITD, while the mask consisted of binaurally uncorrelated noise. Collicular neurons discriminated between the probe and masking noise by showing rapid changes from untuned to tuned and back to untuned responses.The curve describing the relation between probe duration and the degree of ITD-tuning resembled a leaky-integration process with a time constant of about 2 ms. Many neurons were ITD-tuned when probe duration was below 1 ms. These extremely short effective probe durations are interpreted as evidence for neuronal convergence within the pathway computing ITD. The minimal probe duration necessary for ITD-tuning was independent of the bandwidth of the neurons' frequency tuning and also of the best frequency of a neuron. Many narrowly tuned neurons having different best frequencies converge to form a broad-band neuron. 本文对豚鼠125和131dBSPL稳态白噪声暴露后听觉脑干诱发反应(ABR)功率谱进行了研究.研究结果表明:125dBSPL噪声暴露组0—200、210—500Hz频段谱能量比对照组相应频段谱能量增多(P<0.05),而510—900Hz频段谱能量却显著下降(P<0.01);131dBSPL噪声暴露组0-200Hz频段谱能量显著下降(P<0.01),但210-500Hz、910-1400Hz频段谱能量却明显增多(P<0.01).  相似文献

The frequency resolving power of hearing (FRP) of the beluga whale Delphinapterus leucas was studied as dependent on influence of lasting low-intensity sounds (of the ultrasonic range from –20 to +10 dB). Testing of the spectrum ripple-phase reversal was used in conjunction with a noninvasive recording of auditory evoked potentials. FRP parameters were found to depend nonmonotonically on the intensity of the background noise. The resultant adaptation effects can be explained by the fact that, in response to the high-intensity signals, the auditory system sensitivity is reduced to the level optimal for analysis of these signals.  相似文献

In oscines, male song stimulates female reproduction and females are known to adjust both their sexual preferences and their maternal investment according to song quality. Female domestic canaries are especially responsive to wide frequency bandwidth (4 kHz) male songs emitted with a high‐repetition syllable rate and low minimal frequencies (1 kHz). We previously showed that low‐frequency urban noise decreases female sexual responsiveness for these low‐frequency songs (1–5 kHz) through auditory masking. Based on the differential allocation hypothesis, we predicted that urban noise exposure will equally affect female maternal investment. Using a crossover design, we broadcast low‐frequency songs to females either in an overlapping noise condition or in an alternating noise condition. Females decreased both their sexual responsiveness and their clutch size in the overlapping noise treatment relative to the alternative noise treatment. No differences were found concerning egg size or egg composition (yolk and albumen mass, testosterone concentration). Due to our experimental design, we can exclude a general impact of noisy conditions and thereby provide evidence for a detrimental effect through masking on avian courtship and reproductive output. These results suggest that noisy conditions may also affect avian communication in outdoor conditions, which may partly explain field reports on noise‐dependent breeding success and reduced breeding densities at noisy sites.  相似文献

How does the magnitude of the exploration force influence the precision of haptic perceptual estimates? To address this question, we examined the perceptual precision for moment of inertia (i.e., an object''s “angular mass”) under different force conditions, using the Weber fraction to quantify perceptual precision. Participants rotated a rod around a fixed axis and judged its moment of inertia in a two-alternative forced-choice task. We instructed different levels of exploration force, thereby manipulating the magnitude of both the exploration force and the angular acceleration. These are the two signals that are needed by the nervous system to estimate moment of inertia. Importantly, one can assume that the absolute noise on both signals increases with an increase in the signals'' magnitudes, while the relative noise (i.e., noise/signal) decreases with an increase in signal magnitude. We examined how the perceptual precision for moment of inertia was affected by this neural noise. In a first experiment we found that a low exploration force caused a higher Weber fraction (22%) than a high exploration force (13%), which suggested that the perceptual precision was constrained by the relative noise. This hypothesis was supported by the result of a second experiment, in which we found that the relationship between exploration force and Weber fraction had a similar shape as the theoretical relationship between signal magnitude and relative noise. The present study thus demonstrated that the amount of force used to explore an object can profoundly influence the precision by which its properties are perceived.  相似文献

为探讨弱噪声对小鼠 (MusmusculusKm)中脑下丘 (inferiorcolliculus ,IC)神经元声信号提取的影响 ,采用单位胞外记录方法 ,研究了加入弱白噪声 (强度相当于纯音阈强度下 5dB)前后神经元频率调谐曲线的变化。实验共记录到 10 4个下丘神经元 ,测量了 32个神经元的频率调谐曲线。结果显示 :①弱噪声条件下神经元的频率调谐曲线表现出 3种类型 ,即锐化 (34 4 % ,11/ 32 )、拓宽 (18 8% ,6 / 32 )和不受影响 (4 6 9% ,15 / 32 ) ,其中锐化呈现有意义的变化 ;②频率调谐受弱噪声锐化的神经元 ,其Q10 、Q3 0 平均分别增大 (34 4 2±17 0 4 ) % (P =0 0 2 6 ,n =11)和 (4 6 34± 2 2 88) % (P =0 0 0 9,n =7) ,且Q3 0 变化率大于Q10 ;③弱噪声对调谐曲线的高、低频边锐化度不一 ,神经元低频边的反转斜率基本不变 [由 0 16± 0 0 8变为 0 16± 0 0 7kHz/dB (P =0 94 7,n =7) ],而高频边明显下降 [由 0 5 2± 0 2 5下降为 0 2 6± 0 13kHz/dB ,平均减小 (4 3 81±2 4 0 6 ) % ,(P =0 0 4 6 ,n =7) ]。上述结果表明 ,弱噪声可锐化小鼠IC神经元频率调谐 ,并强化神经元的声信号高频分析能力  相似文献

有关听中枢神经元纯音前掩蔽效应的神经表征已进行了大量研究,但是,噪声前掩蔽尤其是间断噪声前掩蔽效应的神经表征却鲜有报道。本研究观察了自由声场条件下,昆明小鼠下丘神经元在持续与间断噪声前掩蔽条件下对纯音探测声的反应。共记录到96个下丘神经元,测量了其中51个神经元在不同声刺激条件下的强度一放电率函数。结果显示,掩蔽声强度分布较广(探测声阈下21dB至阈上19dB之间)。在将近一半的神经元中,间断噪声的前掩蔽效应比持续噪声强(Ⅰ型,45.10%,P〈0.001),但也有少数神经元其间断噪声的掩蔽效应较持续噪声的弱(Ⅲ型,17.65%,P〈0.001),部分神经元无显著性差异(Ⅱ型,37.25%,P〉0.05)。无论Ⅰ型还是Ⅲ型神经元,持续噪声和间断噪声均在探测声强度较低时产生较强的抑制效应,随着探测声强度的升高,抑制效应逐渐降低(P〈0.001);同时,持续噪声和间断噪声之间前掩蔽效应差异亦不复存在(P〉0.05)。此外,当掩蔽声由持续噪声换为间断噪声后,部分Ⅰ型神经元掩蔽时相的类型发生转变,其中最主要的转变为由前期抑制转变为均衡抑制(53.85%,7/13)。对下丘神经元声反应的时间域以及强度域,持续与间断噪声具有分化性前掩蔽效应,提示噪声前掩蔽并非简单的神经元发放压抑源,某些主动性神经调制机制可能参与了噪声条件下时相声信息的编码过程。  相似文献

Natural auditory environment consists of multiple sound sources that are embedded in ambient strong and weak noise. For effective sound communication and signal analysis, animals must somehow extract biologically relevant signals from the inevitable interference of ambient noise. The present study examined how a weak noise may affect the amplitude sensitivity of neurons in the mouse central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC) which receives convergent excitatory and inhibitory inputs from both lower and higher auditory centers. Specifically, we studied the amplitude sensitivity of IC neurons using a probe (best frequency pulse) and a masker (weak noise) under simultaneous masking paradigm. For most IC neurons, weak noise masking increases the minimum threshold and decreases the number of impulses. Noise masking also increased the slope and decreased the dynamic range of the rate amplitude function of these IC neurons. The strength of this noise masking was greater at low than at high sound amplitudes. This variation in the amplitude sensitivity of IC neurons in the presence of the weak noise was mostly mediated through GABAergic inhibition. These data indicate that in the real world the ambient weak noise improves amplitude sensitivity of IC neurons through GABAergic inhibition while inevitably decreases the range of overall auditory sensitivity of IC neurons.  相似文献

LamB, a sugar-specific channel of Escherichia coli outer membrane was reconstituted into lipid bilayer membranes and the current noise was investigated using fast Fourier transformation. The current noise through the open channels had a rather small spectral density, which was a function of the inverse frequency up to about 100 Hz. The spectral density of the noise of the open LamB channels was a quadratic function of the applied voltage. Its magnitude was not correlated to the number of channels in the lipid bilayer membrane. Upon addition of sugars to the aqueous phase the current decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Simultaneously, the spectral density of the current noise increased drastically, which indicated interaction of the sugars with the binding site inside the channel. The frequency dependence of the spectral density was of Lorentzian type, although the power of its frequency dependence was not identical to -2. Analysis of the power density spectra using a previously proposed simple model (Benz, R., A. Schmid, and G. H. Vos-Scheperkeuter. 1987. J. Membr. Biol. 100: 12-29), allowed the evaluation of the on- and the off-rate constants for the maltopentaose binding to the binding site inside the LamB channels. This means also that the maltopentaose flux through the LamB channel could be estimated by assuming a simple one-site, two-barrier model for the sugar transport from the results of the noise analysis.  相似文献

To find the diagnostic spatial frequency information in different painting styles (cubism, impressionism and realism), we have compared sensitivity (d') in distinguishing signal (subject of the painting) from noise with normal, high-pass and low-pass filtered images at long (150 ms) and short (30 ms) exposure. We found that for cubist-style images, d' increases with high-pass filtering compared with normal and low-pass filtered images, but decreases with low-pass filtering compared with normal images. These results indicate that channels with high spatial resolution provide the diagnostic information to solve the binding problem. Sensitivity for images in impressionist style was instead reduced by both low- and high-pass filtering. This indicates that both high and low spatial frequency channels play a role in solving the binding problem, suggesting the involvement of large collator units that group the response of small channels tuned to the same orientation. The difference between realism, which shows higher sensitivity for low-frequency filtering at short durations and cubism in which the binding problem is solved by high spatial frequency channels, has a corresponding difference in aesthetic judgment: the probability of judging a painting as 'intriguing' is larger with low-pass filtering than with high-pass filtering in realism, while the opposite is true for cubism. This suggests that the aesthetic experience is available during early processing of an image, and could preferentially influence high-level categorization of the subject of a painting.  相似文献

Unit activity was recorded in the tectum of curarized frogs during presentation of various visual stimuli (on- and off-responses to diffuse illumination and movement of an object of recognizable shape). It was shown that different types of stimulation lead to the organization of a different distribution of unit activity in the tectum, in the form of excitatory-inhibitory neuronal mosaics; inhibitory responses, limiting and exacerbating the excitatory responses of other neurons, predominate. The differences observed in the spatiotemporal characteristics of the neuronal mosaics under the influence of different stimuli may be evidence of specificity of coding of visual impulses carrying different information from the retina in the tectum.  相似文献

The goal of the study was to enlarge knowledge of discrimination of complex sound signals by the auditory system in masking noise. For that, influence of masking noise on detection of shift of rippled spectrum was studied in normal listeners. The signal was a shift of ripple phase within a 0.5-oct wide rippled spectrum centered at 2 kHz. The ripples were frequency-proportional (throughout the band, ripple spacing was a constant proportion of the ripple center frequency). Simultaneous masker was a 0.5-oct noise below-, on-, or above the signal band. Both the low-frequency (center frequency 1 kHz) and on-frequency (the same center frequency as for the signal) maskers increased the thresholds for detecting ripple phase shift. However, the threshold dependence on the masker level was different for these two maskers. For the on-frequency masker, the masking effect primarily depended on the masker/signal ratio: the threshold steeply increased at a ratio of 5 dB, and no shift was detectable at a ratio of 10 dB. For the low-frequency masker, the masking effect primarily depended on the masker level: the threshold increased at a masker level of 80 dB SPL, and no shift was detectable at a masker level of 90 dB (for a signal level of 50 dB) or 100 dB (for a signal level of 80 dB). The high-frequency masker had little effect. The data were successfully simulated using an excitation-pattern model. In this model, the effect of the on-frequency masker appeared to be primarily due to a decrease of ripple depth. The effect of the low-frequency masker appeared due to widening of the auditory filters at high sound levels.  相似文献

In human newborns, presentation of sounds and odors under stress situations had a calming effect on behavioral and cortisol responses (Kawakami et al., 1996, 1997). These calming effects were examined with 10-day- and 15-day-old Japanese macaques. In Study 1, white noise presentation (Experimental conditions) at the blood sampling was compared with no sound presentation (Control conditions) at the blood sampling. White noise presentation has a calming effect on coded behavioral responses. In Study 2, lavender scent presentation (Experimental conditions) at the blood sampling was compared with no odor presentation (Control conditions) at the blood sampling. Lavender presentation has a calming effect on cortisol responses in the marginal level. From the data of these studies, the salivary cortisol levels were related to the cortisol levels in plasma. Our results may suggest the different effects of sound and odor on infant Japanese macaques.  相似文献

The 3-D structures of the maltooligosaccharide-specific LamB-channel of Escherichia coli (also called maltoporin) and sucrose-specific ScrY (sucroseporin) are known from X-ray crystallography. The central constriction of the channels formed by the external loop 3 is controlled by a number of different amino acids. The most prominent one of these, N192, D201 and F204, were replaced by site-directed mutagenesis into those of LamB, which, according to the 3-D model of both channels are localized at similar places. The ScrY single mutants ScrYN192R, ScrYD201Y and ScrYF204D and the ScrY triple mutant ScrY3113 (N192R + D201Y + F204D) were created together with the triple mutant ScrY3213, which lacks also amino acids 1 to 61 from the N-terminal end. The mutant proteins were purified to homogeneity and were reconstituted into lipid bilayer membranes. In these experiments, the single-channel conductance of the mutants in different salt solutions and the stability constants for binding of different maltooligosaccharides to the mutant channels was measured using titration experiments with carbohydrates. The carbohydrate-induced block of the channel function could also be used for the study of current noise through the different mutant ScrY-channels. The analysis of the power density spectra allowed the evaluation of the on- and off-rate constants (k1 and k-1) of carbohydrate-binding to the binding site inside the channels. The results suggest that both on- and off-rate constants were affected by the mutations. Most of them showed a substantial effect on carbohydrate binding kinetics. Nevertheless, single-channel conductance and carbohydrate binding of ScrY3113 mutant were still different from that of LamB, suggesting that not only the amino acids of the central constriction but also the general architecture of both channels have a substantial influence on channel properties.  相似文献

Reaction time and recognition accuracy of speech emotional intonations in short meaningless words that differed only in one phoneme with background noise and without it were studied in 49 adults of 20-79 years old. The results were compared with the same parameters of emotional intonations in intelligent speech utterances under similar conditions. Perception of emotional intonations at different linguistic levels (phonological and lexico-semantic) was found to have both common features and certain peculiarities. Recognition characteristics of emotional intonations depending on gender and age of listeners appeared to be invariant with regard to linguistic levels of speech stimuli. Phonemic composition of pseudowords was found to influence the emotional perception, especially against the background noise. The most significant stimuli acoustic characteristic responsible for the perception of speech emotional prosody in short meaningless words under the two experimental conditions, i.e. with and without background noise, was the fundamental frequency variation.  相似文献

In the unstimulated, lightly anesthetized rat, both on- and off-cells exhibit alternating periods of silence and activity lasting from several seconds to a few minutes. In the preceding paper, we showed that the active periods of all cells of the same class are always in phase, whereas the firing of cells of different classes is invariably out of phase. Thus, the pattern of firing of any single on- or off-cell provides a useful indication of the excitability of all on- and off-cells in the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM). In this study, we measured the latency of the tail flick response (TF) at set intervals while recording from TF-related neurons in RVM, and were able to demonstrate a significant relationship between the spontaneous firing of both on- and off-cells and the latency of the TF response. If noxious heat is applied at a time when an off-cell is spontaneously active (or an on-cell is silent), the TF latency is longer than if the TF trial falls during a period in which the off-cell is silent (or the on-cell is active). This correlation between on- and off-cell firing and changes in TF latency is consistent with a nociceptive modulatory role for either or both cell classes. These findings support the hypothesis that off-cells inhibit and on-cells facilitate spinal nociceptive transmission and reflexes.  相似文献
