Photographs of Pterophyllum and Gasterosteus feeding indicate that they suck food into their mouths by expansion of the buccal and opercular cavities. The premaxillae are protruded as the mouth opens, and remain protruded as it closes. The mechanisms whereby these movements can be performed, by these and by more generalized acanthopterygians, are described. It is shown that the palatines of generalized acanthopterygians are so arranged as to prevent retraction of the premaxillae when the mouth is closed with the buccal cavity expanded.
It is estimated, from rough measurements on a few species, that a teleost cannot suck into its mouth food that is further from its mouth opening than about one-quarter of the length of its head. It is shown that protrusion of the premaxillae can be useful in getting the mouth opening close to food that is to be sucked in, expecially when it is to be taken from the bottom. The possible advantages of closing the mouth with the premaxillae protruded are discussed.

Acquired phototrophy, i.e. the use of chloroplasts from ingested prey, can be found among some species of dinoflagellates and ciliates. The best studied examples of this phenomenon in these groups are within the ciliate genus Mesodinium and the dinoflagellate genus Dinophysis, both ecologically important genera with a worldwide distribution. Mesodinium species differ considerably in their carbon metabolism. Some species rely almost exclusively on food uptake, while other species rely mostly on photosynthesis. In Mesodinium with acquired phototrophy, a number of prey organelles in addition to chloroplasts may be retained, and the host ciliate has considerable control over the acquired chloroplasts; Mesodinium rubrum is capable of dividing its acquired chloroplasts and can also photoacclimate. In Dinophysis spp., the contents of ciliate prey are sucked out, but only the chloroplasts are retained from the ingested prey. Some chloroplast house-keeping genes have been found in the nucleus of Dinophysis and some preliminary evidence suggests that Dinophysis may be capable for photoacclimation. Both genera have been claimed to take up inorganic nutrients, including NO3, indicating that processes beyond photosynthesis have been acquired. M. rubrum seems to depend upon prey species within the Teleaulax/Plagioselmis/Geminigera clade of marine cryptophytes. Up until now, Dinophysis species have only been maintained cultured on M. rubrum as food, but other ciliates may also be ingested. Dinophysis spp. and M. rubrum are obligate mixotrophs, depending upon both prey and light for sustained growth. However, while M. rubrum only needs to ingest 1–2% of its carbon demand per day to attain maximum growth, Dinophysis spp. need to obtain about half of their carbon demand from ingestion for maximum growth. Both Mesodinium and Dinophysis spp. can survive for months in the light without food. The potential role for modeling in exploring the complex balance of phototrophy and phago-heterotrophy, and its ecological implications for the mixotroph and their prey, is discussed.  相似文献

本文回顾了自1942年水生丝孢菌发现以来,该类群的研究进展。世界范围内已有约80属、200种的水生丝孢菌被报道。中国发现20属、28种。12属中的15种水生丝孢菌的有性阶段已发现,它们大多数是子囊菌,少数为担子菌。生理学研究证实,该类真菌普遍地可以分泌胞外多糖酶,从而能较好地利用多种碳源。其它生理特性,如氮源和矿物的需求等,本文也作了综述。一些植物寄生性水生丝孢菌也有报道。生态学研究表明,秋季和冬季是水生丝孢菌大发生季节。它们在水环境中的重要作用,文中也作了较详细的讨论。最后涉及的是水生丝孢菌的传布和陆生情况的发现。本文还对该类群真菌的研究前景作了展望。  相似文献

Gibberellin-like substances have been detected in sap exudingfrom decapitated apple and pear trees and also in the xylemsap sucked from stems of apple. Pig liver ribosomes have been solubilized in reverse micelles constituted by bis (2-ethyl hexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT) in isooctane and 3.6% water, v:v. The micellar ribosomal solutions are transparent, show no significant scattering and permit direct spectroscopic observation of the ribosomes to be made. Ultraviolet absorption and circular dichroic spectra have been recorded and indicate that the ribosomes maintain in the micellar environment their structural integrity. Some possible applications of these micellar systems are discussed.  相似文献

South Indian food dishes, comprising several deep fried items have been proved to be mutagenic. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as, benzo(a)pyrene, chrysene and dibenzanthracene, which are potent and proven carcinogens have been identified and quantified in several of the commonly consumed South Indian food dishes and food components. Most of the pyrolysed items contained PAHs in appreciable quantities. PAHs were detected in significant levels in salted, sundried and oil fried vegetables and fishes. Some of the raw and uncooked food components also revealed the presence of PAHs.  相似文献

Intelligent resource exchange usually has been thought of as a strictly human phenomenon. Some searchers demonstrated experimentally that chimpanzees have the necessary cognitive capacities to exchange food with humans. This short article presents the first example of an immediate and spontaneous exchange of objects between chimpanzees. This exchange between Spock and Maya is not a direct exchange of objects, from hand to hand, as would be observed among humans. This leads us to suppose that exchange, if it really occurs amongst wild chimpanzees, is done indirectly, through the more or less concomitant deposit of the objects or food items on the ground, maybe because chimpanzees are quadrupedal animals. This observation is discussed in relation to the notion of reciprocity used in anthropological and sociological studies.  相似文献

Biogeography of polypores distributed in the Malesian region is reviewed. Some of the species reported from this region are pantropical or paleotropical and widely distributed along the equator. Several species are restricted to lowland areas of Malesia and adjacent regions, and can be classified as Asian or Asian-Oceanian tropical species. Some species have only been recorded from lowland areas of Malesia at present, but detailed distributions are unclear for many of them. Some lowland Malesian species are also distributed in temperate areas of East Asia; among them, few species are circumglobal in the Northern Hemisphere, whereas many others are tropical species showing continuous distributions up to the warm temperate areas of East Asia. Species recorded from highland areas of Malesia include tropical species common to lowland Malesia, temperate species common to temperate Asia, and endemic species in highland areas of Malesia and adjacent regions. Regarding the factors that delimitate distribution of the Malesian polypores, I discuss polypore host preference, response to physical environmental factors, and dispersal ability. Systematics and ecological characteristics are briefly discussed for selected Malesian polypores: Corneroporus subcitrinus, Paratrichaptum accuratum, Postia stellifera and Roseofavolus eos.  相似文献

A microbial biosensor consists of a transducer in conjunction with immobilised viable or non-viable microbial cells. Non-viable cells obtained after permeabilisation or whole cells containing periplasmic enzymes have mostly been used as an economical substitute for enzymes. Viable cells make use of the respiratory and metabolic functions of the cell, the analyte to be monitored being either a substrate or an inhibitor of these processes. Bioluminescence-based microbial biosensors have also been developed using genetically engineered microorganisms constructed by fusing the lux gene with an inducible gene promoter for toxicity and bioavailability testing. In this review, some of the recent trends in microbial biosensors with reference to the advantages and limitations are been discussed. Some of the recent applications of microbial biosensors in environmental monitoring and for use in food, fermentation and allied fields have been reviewed. Prospective future microbial biosensor designs have also been identified.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that the bacterial community resident in the human intestinal tract has a major impact on gastrointestinal function and thereby on human health and well-being. Considerable efforts have been made to influence the intestinal microbiota by dietary means in such a way that the health of the host is beneficially affected. Pro- and prebiotics are food products that are specially designed for this purpose. Parallel to the increase in the acceptance of such products by the consumer, the scientific interest in the mechanisms underlying their presumed effects, such as pathogen inhibition, immune modulation or anti-carcinogenicity, has grown continuously in recent years. Some of these effects have been established by several independent studies, but others are still controversial. This review relates the health claims made for the pro- and prebiotic food products to the facts established by in vivo and in vitro studies. The assessment of pro- and prebiotic effects on the microbial gut ecosystem is highly improved and facilitated by the application of molecular methods. Biotechnological aspects of the production of pro- and prebiotics are discussed.  相似文献

(1) Seabird-cetacean associations involve many genera.
(2) Some seabirds/cetaceans associate with more species than others, e.g. minke and pilot whales, Common dolphins and porpoises amongst cetaceans, and gannet & kittiwake amongst seabirds. Killer whale, sperm whale, shag and cormorant have not been recorded in associations, in the N.E. Atlantic.
(3) All observed associations would be predicted on the basis of the diets of the associated species.
(4) Most associations are probably opportunistic or incidental, as a result of concentration of shared prey.
(5) Some species, however, may associate more regularly, e.g. minke & pilot whales, Common dolphin and porpoise amongst cetaceans and gannet amongst seabirds. It is not possible to say which derives benefit from the association, but on theoretical grounds it is most likely to be the seabird.
(6) Minke and pilot whales may drive towards the surface food normally out of reach of seabirds, particularly Procellariformes. Common dolphins feed by herding fast-moving fish shoals into tight groups which will be a more concentrated food source for diving sea-birds, such as gannets, and make food more accessible to other species. Porpoises may achieve the same result with inshore shoals of sprats and sand eels, particularly for auks and kittiwakes, and terns.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the freshwater leech Erpobdella octoculata was analysed by exposing potential invertebrate and vertebrate prey organisms (alive, wounded or dead) to leech attack in dishes, in the laboratory. The fact that E. octoculata is a macrophagous feeder that swallows living prey organisms whole (preferentially Chironomus larvae) is documented. However, it was repeatedly observed that adult leeches sucked the body fluids from wounded larvae. Likewise, cut pieces of earthworms, dead crustaceans and crushed water snails were attacked and the soft parts sucked in with the aid of the unarmed pharynx. Adult leeches sucked the body fluids from dead, decaying bodies of vertebrates (fish, newt larvae). Newly hatched young are blood suckers that rapidly attacked the wounded regions of Chironomus larvae and other invertebrates such as crushed water snails. It is concluded that the common leech E. octoculata is not only a predator, but also a fluid sucker and a scavenger. The ecological implications of this finding are discussed.  相似文献

Summary A numerical model of an eusocial colony foraging for food showed that, for each set of values of resource density, resource size and recruitment system employed, a given optimal proportion of scouts in the colony maximize the amount of resources retrieved by a colony during a fixed period. The model predicts that ants using mass recruitment systems should have larger colonies with small foragers, and should forage on large food sources. Retrieval of small food sources by small colonies is best achieved with large workers using individual foraging strategies. For mass foragers, several food sources are best retrieved using democratic decision-making systems in recruitment, whereas for very large food sources at very low mean food patch density, autocratic decision-making systems are optimal. Some of the experimental evidence available is discussed in the light of these findings, as they confirm the prediction that large colonies with small workers have mass recruitment systems, whereas workers of small colonies with large workers are generally lone foragers.  相似文献

In the context of widespread vegetation changes in Tsavo National Park, food habits of gerenuk are being investigated; the present paper gives an account of the results obtained during the first year of the study. Feeding of free-ranging gerenuk was observed from a landrover in two study areas with different vegetation types. Plant species eaten were determined in the field or collected for identification. Gerenuk feed almost exclusively on leaves, shoots, flowers, and a few fruits of trees and shrubs, as well as some climbers and vines, the latter mainly during the rainy seasons. No small herbs or grass were found to be eaten. The composition of the diet differed considerably between the two study areas, largely as a result of differences in the available vegetation. Seasonal variations in the diet are brought about mainly by variations in the availability of different food plants, notably the ratio between deciduous and evergreen species at different seasons. On the basis of a preliminary quantitative survey of the vegetation in the study areas, actual preferences have been evaluated. Some common plant species were found to be rejected altogether, although they are eaten by other browsing animals. A total of 68 plant species has so far been recorded as food plants, indicating that gerenuk are able to utilize a wide range of plants. In view of this adaptability, and of the abundance of preferred food plants in the study areas, the vegetation changes in Tsavo National Park do not, at present, appear to endanger the continued existence of the gerenuk.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The variety of interactions between human cultures and herpetofauna is the subject matter of Ethnoherpetology, a subdivision of Ethnozoology. In the semi-arid region of Brazil, many reptiles interact with human communities because of their utility or because of the risks they represent. These interactions have obvious implications for the conservation of reptiles from this region.In this context, ethnoherpetology studies are crucial because they serve as subsidies for guiding strategies for the handling and conservation of reptiles. This paper presents ethnozoological and taxonomic informations of hunted reptiles in the semiarid region of Brazil and analyse the implications on conservation that are related to the interactions between people and reptiles in this region. Taxonomic keys to identifying recorded reptiles are provided. Records of humans interacting with 38 reptile species that belong to 31 genuses and 16 families have been found. The groups with the largest numbers of recorded species were snakes (18 species), and this group was followed in number by lizards (13), chelonians (4), and crocodilians (3). The reptiles that were recorded may be used for the following purposes: medicinal purposes (24 species), food (13 species), ornamental or decorative purposes (11 species), in magical/religious practices (10 species), and as pets (10 species). Some species (n = 16) may have multiple uses. Furthermore, more than half of the species (n = 19) are commonly killed because they are considered potentially dangerous. Strategies for conserving the reptiles of the Brazilian semi-arid region must reconcile and integrate human and conservation needs.  相似文献

Urban areas have unique assemblages of species which are governed by novel ecological processes. People living in these environments have specific needs and demands in terms of ecosystem services (ES). Urban ecosystems are transformed in many ways by human activities and their floras comprise a high proportion of alien plant species, many of which were intentionally introduced to provide, augment or restore ES. Urban environments also have novel disturbance regimes and provide colonization sites for the establishment, dispersal and proliferation of alien plant species; such conditions often generate biological invasions which may cause marked changes to ES. We review the roles that alien plants play in providing urban ES and ecosystem disservices (EDS) globally. We identify the main ES and EDS associated with alien plants, and highlight the key species involved. A literature search revealed 335 papers, representing studies in 58 cities or urban areas in 27 countries. These studies recorded 337 alien plant species, contributing to 39 different ES and 27 EDS–310 species were recorded as contributing to ES and 53 species to EDS. A small number of alien plant taxa were frequently recorded as providing multiple ES in many urban ecosystems; the 10 most recorded species accounted for 21% of the ES recorded. Some of these species also result in significant EDS; three species accounted for 30% of the EDS recorded. Cultural services (notably aesthetics) are the most reported ES provided by alien plants in urban areas of developed countries, while provisioning services (notably food production) are most reported in developing countries. The most commonly studied EDS provided by alien plants is the impact on human health (notably allergic reactions). Eighty percent of studies on alien plants and ES and EDS have been done in developed countries. To elucidate the full range of effects of alien plants, more work is needed in developing countries. Urban planners and managers need to be mindful of both the positive and negative impacts of alien plant species to maximise the provision of ES.  相似文献

This review presents with selected examples the versatility of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in the analysis of toxic organophosphorus (OP) compounds, i.e. OP pesticides and chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Several NMR applications of biological importance, like studies on inhibition mechanism, metabolism, and exposure determination, are presented. The review also concerns with the environmental analysis of OP compounds by NMR spectroscopy. Residue analysis of environment and food samples as well as characterization of degradation in environment is discussed. Some of the NMR studies that have been done to support the Chemical Weapons Convention, i.e. the development of suitable CWA detoxification means and the method development of verification analysis for CWAs and their degradation products, are outlined.  相似文献

Approximal grooving of teeth is a form of tooth wear seen in some fossil hominids (Neandertal Man and Pekin Man) and in some primitive peoples (Bushmen, Australian aborigines and American Indians). Previous workers have claimed the grooves were produced either by an acid secreted from the gum or by constant probings with a tooth-pick. The purpose of this paper is to refute these hypotheses, and to suggest from observations on the morphology of the grooves in four Bushman skulls, one American Indian skull, and one South African Negro skull that the approximal grooves are produced by dietary grit (sand and soil in the food and drinking water) being sucked from the vestibule into the oral cavity proper during the mouth-cleansing phase of swallowing.  相似文献

Protein engineering in the context of metabolic engineering is increasingly important to the field of industrial biotechnology. As the demand for biologically produced food, fuels, chemicals, food additives, and pharmaceuticals continues to grow, the ability to design and modify proteins to accomplish new functions will be required to meet the high productivity demands for the metabolism of engineered organisms. We review advances in selecting, modeling, and engineering proteins to improve or alter their activity. Some of the methods have only recently been developed for general use and are just beginning to find greater application in the metabolic engineering community. We also discuss methods of generating random and targeted diversity in proteins to generate mutant libraries for analysis. Recent uses of these techniques to alter cofactor use; produce non-natural amino acids, alcohols, and carboxylic acids; and alter organism phenotypes are presented and discussed as examples of the successful engineering of proteins for metabolic engineering purposes.  相似文献
