The concept of resource partitioning, as originally developed, relates to evolutionary change in species in response to selection pressures generated by interspecific competition. More recently it has taken on another meaning, one that is not defined in terms of evolutionary function, and which refers simply to differences in resource use between species regardless of the origins of the differences. Such a shift in usage has several drawbacks for ecological theory, which are discussed. Of most practical significance to ecologists is the inappropriate justification conferred on the continued use of a category that contains characters that are not equivalents. Ecologists are therefore frequently in the position of explaining the presence of species in an area by reference to the by-products of their adaptive evolution.  相似文献

Enhanced soil respiration in response to elevated atmospheric CO2 has been demonstrated, and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi are of particular interest since they partition host-derived photoassimilates belowground. Although a strong response of ECM fungi to elevated CO2 has been shown, little is still known about the functional diversity among species. We studied carbon (C) partitioning in mycorrhizal Scots pine seedlings in response to short-term CO2 enrichment, using seven ECM species with different ecological strategies. Mycorrhizal associations were synthesised and seedlings grown in large Petri dishes containing peat:vermiculite and nutrient solution for 10–15 weeks, after which half of the microcosms were exposed to elevated CO2 treatment (710 ppm) for 15 days and the other half were kept in ambient CO2 treatment. Partitioning of C was quantified by pulse labelling the seedlings with 14CO2 and examining the distribution of labelled assimilates in shoot, root and extraradical mycelial compartments by destructive harvest and liquid scintillation counting. Fungal biomass was determined with PLFA analysis. The respiratory loss of 14CO2 was on average greater in the elevated CO2 treatment for most species compared to the ambient CO2 treatment. More label was retrieved in the shoots in the ambient CO2 treatment compared to elevated CO2 (significant for P. involutus and P. fallax). Greater amounts of label were found in the extraradical mycelial compartment in all species (except P. involutus) in elevated CO2 compared to ambient CO2 (significant for L. bicolor, P. byssinum, P. fallax and R. roseolus). Fungal biomass production increased significantly with elevated CO2 for two species (H. velutipes and A. muscaria); three species (P. fallax, P. involutus and R. roseolus) showed a similar but non-significant trend, whereas L. bicolor and P. byssinum produced less biomass in elevated CO2 compared to ambient CO2. When 14C in the mycelial compartment and respiration was expressed per unit fungal PLFA the difference between CO2 treatments disappeared. We demonstrated that different ECM fungal isolates respond differently in C partitioning in response to CO2 enrichment. These results suggest that under certain growth conditions, when nutrients are not limiting, ECM fungi respond rapidly to increasing C-availability through changed biomass production and respiration.  相似文献

A partition study with peptides and recombinant proteins in poly(ethylene glycol)4000–potassium phosphate aqueous two-phase systems has been performed. The aim was to study to what extent the insertion of charged residues could affect protein partition in addition to the already observed effects of tryptophan residues. The model proteins used are based on a staphylococcal protein A derivative, Z, and modified by the insertion of peptide tags close to the C-terminus. The tags differed with respect to their content of both Trp, negatively (Asp) and positively charged (Lys) amino acid residues. The same partitioning trends were observed for the peptides and fusion proteins. The effect of Trp residues was to direct the partitioning towards the PEG phase. The insertion of two negatively charged (Asp) residues into a Trp4-tag enhanced the partition towards the PEG phase even more. The introduction of positively charged (Lys) residues in addition to Trp residues, on the other hand, pulled the peptide or protein towards the potassium phosphate phase. The partitioning of peptides gave a good qualitative picture of the effect of the peptide on partitioning when fused to the protein. The efficiencies of the tags were calculated based on partitioning of tags and fusion proteins, and tag efficiencies generally varied between 60 and 85%.  相似文献

The simulation of phloem translocation by the Münch theory commonly uses resistances from sources to sinks: the resistances are therefore regarded as important in partitioning. Although resistance is generally a set constant, it is in fact strongly affected by viscosity, and thus the concentration of the transported solute. In this paper, the model of partitioning proposed by Minchin et al. was first corrected for variations in viscosity. The model was further modified, with the source considered as an activity of solute production rather than as a compartment concentration. When so defined, the source cannot differ from the sum of sink activities, largely outdating the source- or sink-limitation concepts. The corrected model confined the effect of resistances on the partitioning to low source activities. In the example of wheat grain filling analysed, such activities would be so low that they would correspond only to pathological conditions. In that case, the use of resistances in modelling is therefore just a mathematical burden, not even easily quantifiable since they are related to anatomical traits that are difficult to access. Leaving out resistances, it becomes easy to calculate the sink activities directly from the source activities, using an intuitive, accessible parametrization. The conditions for such a simplification are discussed.  相似文献

A convention is a rule based on arbitrary cues that allows quick resolution of potentially protracted disputes. A familiar example is the Bourgeois strategy, in which the second of two animals to discover a resource yields it to the first, even though it may be stronger than its opponent. Here we develop a game-theoretic model to show that neighbors with imperfect information about one another's fighting abilities can be favored to accept a landmark as the designator of a territory boundary, even when the resulting territory is smaller than the one that would have been won through fighting. Thus, the use of landmarks or other mutually obvious solutions can serve as a convention for territory partitioning. For a distribution of fighting ability with low variance and high skew, there is a remarkably high probability that an animal will accept a smaller territory than it would have won through fighting. The analysis provides a possible explanation for the observed use of landmarks as boundary markers by territorial animals in a variety of taxa, including birds, fish, insects, and mammals. The analysis also suggests why territory boundaries are stable, once established, despite changes in characteristics of the residents or the environment.  相似文献

Synopsis On Naples Reef off southern California, five sympatric species of surfperch (Embiotocidae) eat small animal prey associated with algal turf and other benthos. Although they tend to select different foods in different microhabitats, their different foraging traits are probably individualistic responses (non-interactive or autecological species responses to resources) because the species' pairwise resource overlaps are neither uniformly small nor generally complementary. Mean overlap in both food and foraging microhabitat was significantly greater than random as most species converged in resource use. Only two exploiters of extremes in the available spectra of prey types and microhabitats had significantly narrow overlap. Thus, resource overlaps may simply reflect similarities and differences in the species' independently evolved foraging traits, which were rendered more or less inflexible as different morphological specializations for picking, crunching, or winnowing prey. Therefore, any one species may occur about the reef to its best advantage independently of the others. Its distribution and abundance may simply reflect its tolerance of the local environment. The evidence indicates that the surfperches are not concertedly partitioning resources on Naples Reef, i.e., that the five species had not all coevolved to avoid interspecific competition in the past nor have they all mutually shifted their niches to minimize it in the present.  相似文献

  • In this study, we analysed the effect of soil water availability on biomass partitioning for Nothofagus pumilio by means of a nursery experiment. Juvenile trees were subject to three irrigation conditions: no irrigation, intermediate irrigation and high irrigation. Irrigation conditions emulated the mean precipitation of the most representative environments inhabited by N. pumilio.
  • Changes in soil water availability modified the biomass partitioning patterns of trees. In comparison to the other two conditions, high irrigation caused: (i) a higher ratio of biomass partitioning to stems than roots; (ii) more trunk growth in relation to its branches; and (iii) more photosynthetic organs relative to the aboveground biomass. Trunk size relative to that of its most recent branches was not increased by water availability.
  • Water availability may play a significant role in the capacity of N. pumilio for space occupation due to the effects on axis differentiation.

Many predators and parasites eavesdrop on the communication signals of their prey. Eavesdropping is typically studied as dyadic predator–prey species interactions; yet in nature, most predators target multiple prey species and most prey must evade multiple predator species. The impact of predator communities on prey signal evolution is not well understood. Predators could converge in their preferences for conspicuous signal properties, generating competition among predators and natural selection on particular prey signal features. Alternatively, predator species could vary in their preferences for prey signal properties, resulting in sensory-based niche partitioning of prey resources. In the Neotropics, many substrate-gleaning bats use the mate-attraction songs of male katydids to locate them as prey. We studied mechanisms of niche partitioning in four substrate-gleaning bat species and found they are similar in morphology, echolocation signal design and prey-handling ability, but each species preferred different acoustic features of male song in 12 sympatric katydid species. This divergence in predator preference probably contributes to the coexistence of many substrate-gleaning bat species in the Neotropics, and the substantial diversity in the mate-attraction signals of katydids. Our results provide insight into how multiple eavesdropping predator species might influence prey signal evolution through sensory-based niche partitioning.  相似文献

Lipopolysaccharide endotoxins (LPS) are the most common pyrogenic substances in recombinant peptides and proteins purified from Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. In this respect, aqueous two-phase micellar systems (ATPMS) have already proven to be a good strategy to purify recombinant proteins of pharmaceutical interest and remove high LPS concentrations. In this paper, we review our recent experimental work in protein partitioning in Triton X-114 ATPMS altogether with some new results and show that LPS–protein aggregation can influence both protein and LPS partitioning. Green fluorescent protein (GFPuv) was employed as a model protein. The ATPMS technology proved to be effective for high loads of LPS removal into the micelle-rich phase (%REMLPS?>?98 %) while GFPuv partitioned preferentially to the micelle-poor phase (K GFPuv?<?1.00) due to the excluded-volume interactions. However, theoretically predicted protein partition coefficient values were compared with experimentally obtained ones, and good agreement was found only in the absence of LPS. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed that protein–LPS interactions were taking place and influenced the partitioning process. We believe that this phenomenon should be considered in LPS removal employing any kind of aqueous two-phase system. Nonetheless, ATPMS can still be considered as an efficient strategy for high loads of LPS removal, but being aware that the excluded-volume partitioning theory available might overestimate partition coefficient values due to the presence of protein–LPS aggregation.  相似文献

Background

Taxol binds to the cellular microtubules and suppresses their dynamic instability. Development of tumor cell resistance to taxol is typically associated with increased expression of the drug efflux pump P-glycoprotein and/or alterations in the microtubules. Recently, changes in the dynamic instability of the microtubules have also been associated with development of taxol resistance in a lung cancer cell line. We have established a 250-fold taxol-resistant human ovarian carcinoma subline (2008/13/4) that does not display the typical alterations associated with development of drug resistance.

Results

Utilizing the mRNA differential display technique, we observed increased expression of an alpha subunit of the guanine nucleotide-binding protein, Gαi1, in the taxol-resistant human ovarian carcinoma cell lines compared to the parental 2008 cells. Several isoforms of the α-subunit of the G protein have been identified and the Gαi (inhibitory) are so named because they inhibit the activity of adenylate cyclase leading to inactivation of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) pathway. In addition, Gαi1 is also known to bind to microtubules and activates their GTPase activity and thus induces depolymerization of the microtubules. In the present study we demonstrate that the intracellular level of cAMP and the PKA activity were higher in the taxol-resistant 2008/13/4 and the 2008/17/4 cells despite the increased expression of Gαi1 in these cells. Moreover, Gαi1 was found to be localized not on the cell membrane, but in intracellular compartments in both the taxol-sensitive and -resistant human ovarian carcinoma cells. Interestingly, increased association of the Gαi1 protein and the microtubules in the taxol-resistant cells compared to the parental 2008 cells was observed, both prior to and after treatment of these cells with taxol.

Conclusion

Based on the opposing effects of taxol and the Gαi1 protein on the microtubule dynamic instability (taxol suppresses microtubule dynamic instability whilst the Gαi1 protein inhibits the suppression) our results indicate the operation of a novel pathway that would enable the cells to escape the cytotoxic effects of taxol.  相似文献

α-Chymotrypsin inactivated with 8 M urea and 100 mM dithiothreitol could be completely reactivated by subjecting it to three-phase partitioning (TPP). TPP consisted of adding 30% w/v ammonium sulfate and t-butanol (volume equivalent to aqueous solution of denatured α-chymotrypsin) at 25°C. The activated α-chymotrypsin was recovered as an interfacial precipitate between the upper organic and lower aqueous phase. It was found that this could be extended to a thermally inactivated smart bioconjugate of α-chymotrypsin with Eudragit S-100 (a reversibly soluble–insoluble methmethacrylate). The thermally inactivated bioconjugate had to be further subjected to urea and dithiothreitol before refolding by three-phase partitioning. Ninety per cent of the activity of the bioconjugate could be recovered. The free enzyme and its bioconjugate which lost activity in the presence of 90% dioxane recovered 94 and 90% of their activities, respectively, by employing TPP. The refolded free enzyme and its bioconjugate were evaluated in terms of Vmax/Km and their fluorescence emission spectra.  相似文献

The influence of the distance (transport resistance) betweensource and sink on dry matter distribution between fruits andvegetative parts in tomato was studied. In two glasshouse experiments,a control treatment (single-shoot plants, no truss removal)was conducted, together with two double-shoot treatments: double-shootplants with no trusses removed from one shoot and all trussesremoved at anthesis from the other shoot (100–0) and double-shootplants with every second truss removed from both shoots (50–50).Plant growth and dry matter distribution was recorded by periodicaldestructive harvests, during a period of about 100 d after anthesisof the first truss. In experiment 2, plants were probably sink-limited.At the end of both experiments, 58–60% of dry matter wasin the fruits for control plants, whereas for both double-shoottreatments this was 43% (Experiment 1) or 38% (Experiment 2).Until 60–65 d after first flowering, vegetative growthof the individual shoots in both double-shoot treatments wasthe same. Results supported the assumption of one common assimilatepool and showed no significant influence of distance (transportresistance) between source and sink on dry matter partitioning. A solid–liquid two-phase partitioning bioreactor (TPPB) in which the non-aqueous phase consisted of polymer (HYTREL) beads was used to degrade a model mixture of phenols [phenol, o-cresol, and 4-chlorophenol (4CP)] by a microbial consortium. In one set of experiments, high concentrations (850 mg l−1 of each of the three substrates) were reduced to sub-inhibitory levels within 45 min by the addition of the polymer beads, followed by inoculation and rapid (8 h) consumption of the total phenolics loading. In a second set of experiments, the beneficial effect of using polymer beads to launch a fermentation inhibited by high substrate concentrations was demonstrated by adding 1,300 and 2,000 mg l−1 total substrates (equal concentrations of each phenolic) to a pre-inoculated bioreactor. At these levels, no cell growth and no degradation were observed; however, after adding polymer beads to the systems, the ensuing reduced substrate concentrations permitted complete destruction of the target molecules, demonstrating the essential role played by the polymer sequestering phase when applied to systems facing inhibitory substrate concentrations. In addition to establishing alternative modes of TPPB operation, the present work has demonstrated the differential partitioning of phenols in a mixture between the aqueous and polymeric phases. The polymeric phase was also observed to absorb a degradation intermediate (arising from the incomplete biodegradation of 4CP), which opens the possibility of using solid–liquid TPPBs during biosynthetic transformation to sequester metabolic byproducts.  相似文献

Four species of fast-growing pioneer tree species in the genus Cecropia exist in the forests in central Panama. Cecropia insignis is dominant in old-growth forests but absent from nearby secondary forests; C. obtusifolia, and C. peltata are abundant in secondary forests but rare in old-growth forest, and C. longipes is uncommon in both. To determine whether Cecropia habitat associations are a consequence of local dispersal or differences in recruitment success, we grew seedlings of these species in common gardens in large treefall gaps in secondary and old-growth forest. In contrast to the observed adult distribution, only C. insignis grew significantly over 16 months in secondary forests; remaining species were heavily browsed by herbivores. C. insignis also grew and survived best in old-growth forest. Differences in susceptibility to herbivory did not result from an ant defence mutualism; none of the plants were colonised by ants during the experiment. To test whether C. insignis, the species least susceptible to herbivory, trades off investment in growth in favour of defence, we also grew the four Cecropia species in a screened growing house under light conditions comparable to large forest gaps. Contrary to expectation, species growth rates were similar; only C. peltata grew significantly faster than C. insignis. These results suggest that (1) conditions in ~40-year-old secondary forests no longer support the recruitment of Cecropia species, which are canopy dominants there; and (2) among congeners, differences in plant traits with little apparent cost to growth can have large impacts on recruitment by affecting palatability to herbivores.  相似文献

Herons and ibis are colonially nesting waders which, owing to their number, mobility and trophic role as top predators, play a key role in aquatic ecosystems. They are also good biological models to investigate interspecific competition between sympatric species and predation; two processes which structure ecological communities. Odonata are also numerous, diverse, mobile and can play an important role in aquatic ecosystems by serving as prey for herons and ibis. A relationship between prey size and bird predator has been observed in Numidia wetlands (NE Algeria) after analyzing food boluses regurgitated by six species of birds (Purple Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Glossy Ibis, Little Egret, Squacco Heron and Cattle Egret) during the breeding period, which also shows a temporal gradient for the six species. Both the Levins index and preliminary multivariate analysis of the Odonata as prey fed to nestling herons and ibis, indicated a high degree of resource overlap. However, a distinction of prey based on taxonomy (suborder and family) and developmental stage (larvae or adults) reveals a clear size dichotomy with large-sized predators (Purple Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron and Glossy Ibis) preying on large preys like Aeshnids and Libellulids and small-sized predators feeding mainly on small prey like Zygoptera. Overall, the resource utilization suggests a pattern of resource segregation by coexisting nesting herons and ibis based on the timing of reproduction, prey types, prey size and foraging microhabitats.  相似文献

Ecological specialization is common across all levels of biological organization, raising the question of whether the evolution of specialization at one scale in a taxon is linked to specialization at other scales. Anolis lizards have diversified repeatedly along axes of habitat use, but it remains unknown if this diversification into habitat use specialists is underlain by individual specialization. From repeated observations of individuals in a population of Anolis sagrei in Florida, we show that the extent of habitat use specialization among individuals is comparable to the extent of specialization in the same traits among ten sympatric Anolis habitat specialist species in Cuba. However, the adaptive correlations between habitat use and morphology commonly seen across species of Anolis were not observed across individuals in the sampled population. Our results therefore suggest that while patterns of ecological specialization can transcend scale, these parallels are the consequence of distinct ecological processes acting at microevolutionary and macroevolutionary scales.  相似文献

Summary During five consecutive growing seasons (winters) ca. 110 plants of the desert geophyte Bellevalia desertorum were marked individually in a 25 m2 plot on a south-facing slope in the central Negev Desert of Israel. The number of rosette leaves of each plant was recorded, as well as whether it flowered and produced seeds. Multiple regression analysis of the data on the B. desertorum individuals showed that the reproductive state of a plant was determined by 1) its previous size and 2) the current conditions (rainfall), but not by previous conditions, nor by previous reproductive activity. Plant surveys supported these findings. These demographic results were consistent with the current understanding of the reproductive resource allocation pattern of B. desertorum. Flowering was most affected by rainfall until January of the same season, the number of leaves by rainfall until March and seed set was by the total annual amount. Surveys in populations ofB. eigii, a species of more mesic habitats in the Negev Desert suggested that in this species there is a negative effect of previous reproduction in combination with the previous and current conditions, which is also expected from its biomass partitioning pattern.The significance of demographic studies of individual plants in natural populations for the interpretation of experimentally determined resource partitioning patterns was discussed.  相似文献

1. Biological invasions have profound effects on community structure. The community composition following invasions can be influenced by the habitat diversity and the species' responses to abiotic factors. 2. We evaluated the tolerance to climatic factors and analysed the field distribution of four polyphagous fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) of La Réunion Island (three exotic species that successively invaded the island and the endemic species Ceratitis catoirii) in order to evaluate the opportunities of coexistence by niche differentiation. 3. Atmospheric humidity and immersion in water in the laboratory greatly influence the survival of fruit fly pupae. While C. catoirii and C. rosa are very sensitive to desiccation, C. capitata and especially Bactrocera zonata are relatively tolerant. B. zonata also tolerated immersion in water much longer than did C. rosa and C. catoirii, that in turn were more resistant than C. capitata. Overall, field distributions agree with the predictions based on this study of humidity combined with previous data on the effects of temperature. 4. Climatic niche partitioning promotes coexistence between some but not all pairs of invasive species. Thus, C. rosa can coexist with both C. capitata and B. zonata at the regional scale, while climatic niches are not different enough to promote coexistence of the latter two species. The endemic species has no private climatic niche either and this now very rare species could be in the process of extinction. 5. By promoting coexistence or not, climatic diversity in invaded areas can directly affect the community composition following invasions.  相似文献
