Plant survival in alpine habitats is controlled, in several cases, by pollination and seed dispersal success. We have investigated the genetic structure and mating patterns of the endangered Borderea pyrenaica (Dioscoreaceae), one of the oldest herbaceous Pyrenean mountain plants. Simple sequence repeat‐based genotyping was carried out on all the reproductive female and male individuals and in all the female‐descendent progenies of a population of this plant. Although the offspring sampling (246) was twice the size of the adult sampling (122), the latter group showed higher levels of heterozygosity and approximately 20% more alleles than the offspring. Probabilistic spatial neighbourhood modelling of parentage analysis, based on the exponential‐power type model, showed immigration rates of pollen at 63.3%. The present study also detected a strong spatial clustering; most of the sired seeds of B. pyrenaica (68.83%) occurred at distances of up to 20 m, whereas kinship coefficients of adult plants reached zero at spatial distances (d) < 5 m, and 5 < < 10 m for females and males, respectively. These results support the hypothesis of a terrestrial ant‐mediated, rather than a flying insect‐mediated pollination in B. pyrenaica.  相似文献

Primary photochemistry of photosystem II (F v/F m) of the Antarctic hair grass Deschampsia antarctica growing in the field (Robert Island, Maritime Antarctic) and in the laboratory was studied. Laboratory plants were grown at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 180 μmol m−2 s−1 and an optimal temperature (13 ± 1.5°C) for net photosynthesis. Subsequently, two groups of plants were exposed to low temperature (4 ± 1.5°C day/night) under two levels of PPFD (180 and 800 μmol m−2 s−1) and a control group was kept at 13 ± 1.5°C and PPFD of 800 μmol m−2 s−1. Chlorophyll fluorescence was measured during several days in field plants and weekly in the laboratory plants. Statistically significant differences were found in F v/F m (=0.75–0.83), F 0 and F m values of field plants over the measurement period between days with contrasting irradiances and temperature levels, suggesting that plants in the field show high photosynthetic efficiency. Laboratory plants under controlled conditions and exposed to low temperature under two light conditions showed significantly lower F v/F m and F m. Moreover, they presented significantly less chlorophyll and carotenoid content than field plants. The differences in the performance of the photosynthetic apparatus between field- and laboratory-grown plants indicate that measurements performed in ex situ plants should be interpreted with caution.  相似文献

To study the reproductive system of the putative autogamous species Anthyllis vulneraria in Belgian calcareous grasslands, eight polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed using the sequence‐tagged microsatellite profiling technique and 35 plants were typed for all loci. No linkage disequilibrium was found between any pair of loci. Over the loci, the number of alleles ranged from two to five. Observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.053 to 0.688 and from 0.053 to 0.631, respectively. The estimated FIS values (FIS = 0.031 and 0.122) are not in accordance with a predominantly selfing reproductive system.  相似文献

Brilliant blue FCF of food color was given in the diets of mice at levels of 0% (control), 0.08, 0.24, and 0.72% from 5 weeks of age in the F0 generation and continuing to 11 weeks of age in the F1 generation and selected reproductive and neurobehavioral parameters were measured. Mice were mated at 9 weeks of age and dams were delivered offspring at 12 weeks of age. Offspring were weaned at 4 weeks of age. Regarding exploratory behavior at 8 weeks of age in the F0 generation, movement time (sec) displayed a significant tendency to be increased and the average time of rearing (sec) displayed a significant tendency to be decreased in females in the treatment groups in a trend test (p = 0.019 and 0.027, respectively). In the F1 generation, the development of surface righting at postnatal day 4 was delayed significantly in the high‐dose group (0.72%) in male and female offspring, and those effects were significantly related to dose in a trend test (p< 0.01 for both). Regarding exploratory behavior at 8 weeks of age in the F1 generation, the number of horizontal activities exhibited a significant tendency to be decreased in females in the treatment groups in a trend test (p = 0.015). Regarding spontaneous behavior, average time of movement (sec) was significantly accelerated in females in the high‐dose group. The dose levels of brilliant blue FCF used in the present study produced a few significant effects on neurobehavioral parameters in multiple generations in mice.  相似文献

Humidification can suppress water loss from an organism and has great potential for improving the cold storage of short‐lived arthropods, such as predatory mites. The effectiveness of humidity‐controlled cold storage was recently verified for Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) females but was not examined for males. Combining both males and females in one storage protocol might increase the predator population because it would enhance the opportunity for multiple mating, which is necessary for females to maximize their egg production. Newly emerged adult males were stored at an air temperature of 5°C and relative humidity (RH) of 100% or 80%. The median survival time (LT50) was 32 days at 100% RH and 14 days at 80% RH; the survival curves differed significantly. Males stored at 100% RH for 0, 10, 20 and 30 days were introduced to virgin females for mating at 25°C to evaluate their reproductive ability. The pre‐oviposition period was significantly prolonged in the females mated with males stored for ≥20 days. No negative effects of storage were observed on the oviposition period, total number of eggs or net reproduction rate (R0) in the females mated with males stored for ≤20 days or on the mean generation time (T) for those stored for 30 days. A slight decrease in the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was observed in the females mated with males stored for ≥20 days. Our storage method can preserve N. californicus males for 20 days with only a minor reduction in their survival and reproductive ability.  相似文献

Sex dimorphic plants often show sex-specific differences in growth and biomass allocation. These differences have been explained as a consequence of the different reproductive functions performed by the sexes. Such differences may determine the performance of each sex in different habitats and therefore might explain the spatial segregation of the sexes described in many dimorphic plants. We examined the growth, reproductive and physiological responses of the sexes of the subdioecious plant Honckenya peploides to two levels each of salt spray and nutrients, which are assumed to be important selective forces in coastal environments. We found sex-related differences in H. peploides. In particular, females allocated proportionally more dry mass to reproduction and grew less and more slowly than males regardless of salt spray and nutrient conditions, which is interpreted as a trade-off between reproductive and vegetative growth. Regarding physiological response, nutrients significantly increased values of photochemical reflectance index (PRI) in females but not in males, suggesting that photochemical efficiency is more limited by nutrients in females than in males. PRI values also suggest intersexual differences in protection requirements against photoinhibition. The study did not find sex-differential responses to salt spray, which caused a decrease in reproductive effort in both sexes. The sex-related differences in relative growth rates, reproductive allocation and photosynthetic features found here may contribute to explaining habitat-related between-sex differences in performance and, therefore, the spatial segregation of the sexes observed in H. peploides.  相似文献

Sex ratio and sexual dimorphism of Borderea pyrenaica, a long-lived dioecious geophyte endemic to the Pyrenees (north-east Iberian Peninsula), were examined in three alpine populations. In this species, age can be estimated and the sex of nonreproductive adult plants identified. Male plants attain sexual maturity earlier, flower more frequently and grow faster than female plants, whereas females allocate a higher biomass to reproduction than males. These results support the hypothesis that female plants incur a higher cost of sexual reproduction and that this higher cost is measurable as reduced vegetative growth and lower flowering frequency. Variation of sex ratio among young, intermediate and old adults within populations suggests, however, that this higher female reproductive investment does not result in sexual differences in mortality. The overall male-biased sex ratio in B. pyrenaica is mainly a consequence of the tendency of males to reproduce at an earlier age and more frequently than females.  相似文献

  • Salinity is now an increasingly serious environmental issue that affects the growth and yield of many plants.
  • In the present work, the influence of inoculation with the symbiotic fungus, Piriformospora indica, on gas exchange, water potential, osmolyte content, Na/K ratio and chlorophyll fluorescence of tomato plants under three salinity levels (0, 50, 100 and 150 mm NaCl) and three time periods (5, 10 and 15 days after exposure to salt) was investigated.
  • Results indicate that P. indica inoculation improved growth parameters of tomato under salinity stress. This symbiotic fungus significantly increased photosynthetic pigment content under salinity, and more proline and glycine betaine accumulated in inoculated roots than in non‐inoculated roots. P. indica further significantly improved K+ content and reduced Na+ level under salinity treatment. After inoculation with the endophytic fungus, leaf physiological parameters, such as water potential, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration, were all higher under the salt concentrations and durations compared with controls without P. indica. With increasing salt level and salt treatment duration, values of F0 and qP increased but Fm, Fv/Fm, F′v/F′m and NPQ declined in the controls, while inoculation with P. indica improved these values.
  • The results indicate that the negative effects of NaCl on tomato plants were alleviated after P. indica inoculation, probably by improving physiological parameters such as water status and photosynthesis.

Bluespine unicornfish Naso unicornis and orangespine unicornfish Naso lituratus were sampled in Pohnpei and Guam, Micronesia, over 13 months to identify reproductive and age‐based demographic features necessary for informed management. Age and reproductive information were derived from analysis of sagittal otoliths and gonads. Both species had moderate life spans [maximum ages of 23 (N. unicornis) and 14 years (N. lituratus)] compared with published estimates of conspecifics from other locations (>30 years) and of other Naso species. Length at maturation for N. unicornis was similar between Pohnpei and Guam while females consistently matured at a larger size [c. 30 cm fork length (LF)] than males (c. 27 cm LF). This sex‐specific pattern was reversed in N. lituratus for which estimates of maturation length (females: 15 cm LF; males: 18 cm LF) were only obtained from Guam. Developmental patterns in female gonads of both species suggested that initiation of maturation occurs very early. Growth patterns of N. lituratus displayed rapid asymptotic growth compared with N. unicornis and other congeners as well as slight sex‐specific patterns of length‐at‐age. Results highlight the considerable spatial variation that may occur in the population biology of these species across various scales. Additionally, proper management remains complicated without improved knowledge of fishery trends and reproductive behaviour in unicornfishes, species that are prime fishery targets in Micronesia and elsewhere.  相似文献

From June 2004 to May 2006, the reproductive biology of the blue runner Caranx crysos was studied in the Gulf of Gabes (Southern Tunisia). Of 1668 individuals examined, 777 were females (46.6%) and 891 were males (53.4%). The sex ratio significantly deviated in favour of males (♀:♂ = 0.87 : 1). The difference in the numbers of females and males was significant among size‐classes. However, there was no significant difference between sexes over months and seasons. Monthly changes in the Gonado‐Somatic Index (GSI) showed a rapid increase during summer to very high levels in July (3.51% for males and 2.55% for females) and August (3.47% for males and 2.59% for females) before declining sharply in September (0.58% for females and 0.38% for males). The gametogenesis activity began with a pre‐maturation phase, from 20 May to the first 10 days of July, followed by a pre‐spawning phase, from 20 July to 20 August. From the last 10 days of August to 20 September the gonads were in the ripe and spawning stages. From the end of September to early May, gonads were in the post‐spawning and resting stages. The size at which 50% of the population reached sexual maturity was significantly different in males and females: males attained sexual maturity at fork length FL50 = 210.20, whereas females attained maturity at FL50 = 222.3 mm. Age at maturity was 2.4 years for males and 2.8 years for females.  相似文献

Tradeoffs among demographic traits are a central component of life history theory. We investigated tradeoffs between reproductive effort and survival in female greater sage‐grouse breeding in the American Great Basin, while also considering reproductive heterogeneity by examining covariance among current and future reproductive success. We analyzed survival and reproductive histories from 328 individual female greater sage‐grouse captured between 2003 and 2011, and examined the effect of reproductive effort on survival and future reproduction. Monthly survival of females was variable within years, and this within‐year variation was associated with distinct biological seasons. Monthly survival was greatest during the winter (November–March; ΦW= 0.99 ± 0.001 SE), and summer (June–July; ΦS= 0.98 ± 0.01 SE), and lower during nesting (April–May; ΦN= 0.93 ± 0.02 SE) and fall (August–October; ΦF= 0.92 ± 0.02 SE). Successful reproduction was associated with reduced monthly survival during summer and fall, and this effect was greatest during fall. Females that successfully fledged chicks had lower annual survival (0.47 ± 0.05 SE) than females who were not successful (0.64 ± 0.04 SE). Annual survival did not vary across years, consistent with a slow‐paced life history strategy in greater sage‐grouse. In contrast, reproductive success varied widely, and was positively correlated with annual rainfall. We found evidence for heterogeneity among females with respect to reproductive success; compared with unsuccessful females, females that raised a brood successfully in year t were more than twice as likely to be successful in year t+ 1. Female greater sage‐grouse incur costs to survival associated with reproduction, however, variation in quality among females may override costs to subsequent reproductive output.  相似文献

Tropical plants are sensitive to chilling temperatures above zero but it is still unclear whether photosystem I (PSI) or photosystem II (PSII) of tropical plants is mainly affected by chilling temperatures. In this study, the effect of 4°C associated with various light densities on PSII and PSI was studied in the potted seedlings of four tropical evergreen tree species grown in an open field, Khaya ivorensis, Pometia tomentosa, Dalbergia odorifera, and Erythrophleum guineense. After 8 h chilling exposure at the different photosynthetic flux densities of 20, 50, 100, 150 μmol m−2 s−1, the maximum quantum yield of PSII (F v /F m) in all of the four species decreased little, while the quantity of efficient PSI complex (P m) remained stable in all species except E. guineense. However, after chilling exposure under 250 μmol m−2 s−1 for 24 h, F v /F m was severely photoinhibited in all species whereas P m was relative stable in all plants except E. guineense. At the chilling temperature of 4°C, electron transport from PSII to PSI was blocked because of excessive reduction of primary electron acceptor of PSII. F v /F m in these species except E. guineense recovered to ~90% after 8 h recovery in low light, suggesting the dependence of the recovery of PSII on moderate PSI and/or PSII activity. These results suggest that PSII is more sensitive to chilling temperature under the moderate light than PSI in tropical trees, and the photoinhibition of PSII and closure of PSII reaction centers can serve to protect PSI.  相似文献

This study determined the effects of cold storage on the survival, development and reproduction of the mymarid wasp, Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae). Following storage of the immature parasitoids within host eggs of the glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) under a daily fluctuating temperature for up to 50 d, the quality of the parental and F1 generations was assessed by examining several reproductive and developmental parameters indicating fitness. Immature wasps were stored for 20 d within the host without reducing their subsequent survival, development or progeny fitness parameters. After 30 d of storage, survival declined, post-storage developmental time was extended, and the fecundity of the adult females decreased. Storage for 40 d severely damaged G. ashmeadi, because it not only yielded a 12% survival rate, 44% female sterility and increased the proportion of progeny males by 155%, but it also reduced parasitism and fecundity by 70% and 73%, respectively. No wasps emerged after 50 d of storage. Cold storage affected the emergence pattern of the parental but not the F1 and F2 generations. Parental emergence was extended and the pattern displayed two additional peaks after the initial onset. Analysis of several demographic parameters for the parental and F1 generations further confirmed that the quality of the adult parents declined after they had been stored as immatures for 30 d. The detrimental effects caused by cold storage of the parental generation do not extend to the F1 generation. Our results indicate that short-term cold storage of G. ashmeadi within its host could be used for maintaining and accumulating these parasitoids during mass propagation for release in a control program.  相似文献

The Roegneria kamoji accession ZY 1007 was resistant to the mixed predominant races of Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici (Pst) in China based on field tests at adult‐plant stage. The seedling resistance evaluation of ZY 1007 showed that it was resistant to stripe rust physiological strains CYR29, CYR33 and PST‐V26, which were the predominant races of Pst in China. The female parent R. kamoji cv. Gansi No.1 (susceptible to Pst) was crossed with ZY 1007 (resistant to Pst). Parents, F1 and F2 populations were tested in a field inoculated with the mixed urediniospores. ZY 1007 and all the observed 11 F1 hybrid plants were resistant, while plants of Gansi No.1 were susceptible. Among the 221 F2 plants, 168 plants were resistant and 53 were susceptible, and the segregation of resistant and susceptible plants fits 3R:1S ratio (χ2 = 0.074, P > 0.75). It confirmed that the resistance of stripe rust in ZY 1007 was controlled by a single dominant gene and temporarily designated as YrK1007.  相似文献

This experiment was carried out in pots in a greenhouse to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Funneliformis mosseae, Rhizophagus intraradices and Rhizophagus fasciculatus) on carob plant performance under different levels of phosphate fertilization. Non-mycorrhizal (NMyc) and mycorrhizal (Myc) carob plants were subjected to three levels of phosphate fertilization, L1 (0 mg P kg−1 soil), L2 (25 mg P kg−1 soil) and L3 (100 mg P kg−1 soil). Results showed that under L1 and L2 P-fertilization levels, arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis significantly improved growth and biomass production of carob plants. Moreover, mineral nutrient (P, K, Na and Ca) acquisition, photosynthetic activity (Fv/Fm), stomatal conductance, total chlorophyll content, and soluble sugar accumulation were also strongly improved in Myc plants in comparison with NMyc ones. Under L1 P-fertilization level, Myc plants showed strongly increased acid phosphatase activity in roots and in the rhizospheric soil than NMyc plants. Furthermore, Myc plants maintained high membrane integrity (over 80%) and low hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, associated with increased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), guaiacol peroxidase (G-POD), and catalase (CAT) compared to NMyc plants. However, high phosphorus input (L3) negatively affected root colonization and mycorrhizal plant performance. Thus, carob plants associated with Funneliformis mosseae performed best under phosphorus deficiency and were the least sensitive to the variations of phosphorus input levels.

The ability of plants to increase their net CO2 assimilation rate in response to increased irradiance is due to morphological and physiological changes, which might be related to their shade tolerance and leaf ontogeny, but few studies have considered morphology and physiology. Two sympatric oak species (the shade-tolerant Q. petraea and the comparatively shade-intolerant Q. pyrenaica) were grown in hydroponic solution in low-light (LL) and high-light (HL) conditions. 5 months after leaf expansion under these conditions, half of the LL plants were transferred to high light (TLH). Transfer of Q. pyrenaica, from low- to high light led to photoinhibition and after 21 days in higher light there was little acclimation of the maximum rate of carboxylation (VCmax) or the maximum rate of electron transport (Jmax). Q. pyrenaica TLH plants showed lower stomatal conductance at all times compared to plants growing in LL. Stomatal closure was the main limitation to photosynthesis after transfer in Q. pyrenaica. The increase in evaporative demand upon TLH did not affect hydraulic conductivity of Q. pyrenaica. In contrast, the more shade-tolerant Q. petraea showed a greater degree of acclimation of gas exchange in TLH than Q. pyrenaica and two weeks after transfer gas-exchange rates were as high as in LL plants. In Q. petraea, the most important changes occurred at the level of leaf biochemistry with significant increase in VCmax that decreased the Jmax/VCmax ratio below values recorded in HL plants. However, this potential increase in photosynthesis was at least partially hamstrung by a decrease in internal conductance, which highlights the importance of internal conductance in acclimation to higher light in mature leaves. Neither oak species reached the photosynthetic rates of HL plants; however a trend towards leaf acclimation was observed in Q. petraea while the transfer was harmful to the leaves of Q. pyrenaica developed in the shade.  相似文献

Males and females of dioecious plants often differ in morphological, physiological and life‐history traits, probably as a result of their different requirements for reproduction. We found that the growth and reproductive effort of individuals of the dioecious herb Mercurialis annua depended on whether males or females had been growing in the soil previously. This suggests that males and females of M. annua differentially modify the soil in which they are growing. Our study indicates that sexual dimorphism in dioecious plants can give rise to increased environmental heterogeneity as a consequence of sex‐specific niche modification.  相似文献

Summary Desert populations of the evergreen dioecious shrub Simmondsia chinensis exhibit sex-related leaf and canopy dimorphisms not present in populations from more mesic coastal environments. Leaves on female shrubs have characteristically larger sizes, greater specific weights, and greater water-holding capacity than male leaves in desert habitats. In coastal scrub environments no significant difference is present, with leaf characteristics of both sexes similar to those of desert male shrubs. Desert female shrub canopies are typically relatively open with little mutual branch shading. In male shrubs canopies are more densely branched with considerable mutual shading of branches. Female plants allocate a greater proportion of their vegetative resources to leaves than do male plants. Considering total biomass, male plants allocate 10–15% of their resources (biomass, calories, glucose-equivalents, nitrogen, phosphorus) to reproductive tissues. Female allocation is dependent on seed set. At 100% seed set females would allocate 30–40% of their resources to reproduction, while female reproductive investment would equal that of males at approximately 30% seed set. Sexual dimorphism and the associated physiological characteristics in Simmondsia act as an alternative to differential habitat selection by male and female plants. Female plants respond to limited water resources in desert areas by increasing their efficiency in allocating limited resources to reproductive structures.  相似文献

Aspects of the reproductive and maturation biology of the brown shrimp Crangon crangon (L.) were studied in various subareas of the German Bight (North Sea). The size-specific sex ratio of C. crangon was examined based on length frequency distribution data. The sex ratio for the smallest size groups at which sex was determined was typically around 0.5, indicating an even ratio between males and females. The proportion of females decreased in the 30–45 mm size range. In length classes larger than 50 mm, the proportion of females constantly increases to 100% at around 60 mm total length. We concluded that sex reversal from male to female may not occur in C. crangon. Size at sexual maturity was determined from the proportion of ovigerous females. Size at maturity (L 50) was estimated as 55.4 and 62.0 mm total length for spring and winter data, respectively. The seasonal spawning cycle was studied over the period 1958–2005. Between mid February and late June and for size classes larger than 65 mm ovigerous shrimps exceeded 80% and reached up to 100% of the females in the population. This period can be seen as the core spawning season. From early August to early December the proportion of ovigerous shrimps in the female population is very low. Interannual differences in the seasonal process are obvious with a dramatic decline in C. crangon reproductive success in the late 1980s. Various options are discussed for the reasons of the decline and recovery of the reproductive performance.  相似文献

In Squamate reptiles, vitellogenesis in females is marked by an increase in the number and size of follicles, leading to an increase in aerobic metabolism to support the rising energy demand during reproductive activity. Male gametes are smaller than female gametes, and spermiogenesis requires less energy than vitellogenesis. This investigation compares the relationship between aerobic metabolism and reproductive effort in male and female viviparous Tomodon dorsatus snakes. We evaluated the influence of the males' and females' reproductive stages, along with the masses of follicles and testicles, on their aerobic metabolic rate. Our findings show that females have higher maintenance cost of pregnancy than metabolic costs of vitellogenesis. In males, we found no evidence of the reproductive effort influencing aerobic metabolic rates. In T. dorsatus, females have a long period of development and high fecundity. Therefore, the metabolic costs of vitellogenesis represent a critical component in the reproductive effort. On the other hand, males of T. dorsatus maintain a similar mass of gonads throughout the year with constant energy demand. These results reflect the difference in reproductive efforts between females and males of T. dorsatus.  相似文献
