Lake Urmia (or Ormiyeh) is one of the largest hypersaline lakes in the world and the habitat of a unique bisexual Artemia species ( A. urmiana). Despite this, and several other values of the lake, little literature on it has been published. The present paper is an attempt to provide a brief review on various aspects of the lake. Urmia Lake, located in northwestern Iran, is an oligotrophic lake of thalassohaline origin with a total surface area between 4750 and 6100 km 2 and a maximum depth of 16 m at an altitude of 1250 m. The lake is divided into north and south parts separated by a causeway in which a 1500-m gap provides little exchange of water between the two parts. Due to drought and increased demands for agricultural water in the lake's basin, the salinity of the lake has risen to more than 300 g/L during recent years, and large areas of the lake bed have been desiccated. Therefore, management and conservation of this incomparable ecosystem should be considered to improve the current condition by fisheries research institutes. 相似文献

Urmia Lake is one of the most permanent hypersaline lakes in the world which is threatened by hypersalinity and serious dryness. In spite of its importance no paper has been published regarding bacterial community of this lake. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the halophilic bacteria in the aforementioned lake. In so doing, thirty seven strains were isolated on six different culture media. The isolated strains were characterized using phenotypic and genotypic methods. Growth of the strains occurred at 2535 degrees C, pH 6-9 and 7 to 20% (w/v) NaCl indicating that most of the isolates were moderately halophiles. Catalase, oxidase and urease activities were found to be positive for the majority of the isolates. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolated bacteria belonged to two major taxa: Gammaproteobacteria (92%, including Salicola [46%], Pseudomonas [13.5%], Marinobacter [ 11%], Idiomarina [11%], and Halomonas [8%]) and Firmicutes (8%, including Bacillus [5%] and Halobacillus [3%]). In addition, a novel bacterium whose 16S rRNA gene sequence showed almost 98% sequence identity with the taxonomically troubled DSM 3050T, Halovibrio denitrificans HGD 3T and Halospina denitrificans HGD 1-3T, each, was isolated. 16S rRNA gene similarity levels along with phenotypic characteristics suggest that some of the isolated strains could be regarded as potential type strain for novel species, on which further studies are recommended. 相似文献

Urmia Lake, located in northwest Iran, is an oligotrophic and extremely hypersaline habitat that supports diverse forms of life. Owing to its unique biodiversity and special environmental conditions, Urmia Lake National Park has been designated as one of the biosphere reserves by UNESCO. This study was aimed to characterize basidiomycetous yeasts in hypersaline soils surrounding the Urmia Lake National Park using a polyphasic combination of molecular and physiological data. Soil samples were collected from eight sites in Lake Basin and six islands insides the lake. Yeast strains were identified by sequencing the D1/D2 domains of the 26S rRNA gene. When D1/D2 domain sequencing did not resolve the identity of the species, strain identification was obtained by ITS 1 & 2 sequencing. Twenty-one species belonging to the genera Cystobasidium, Holtermanniella, Naganishia, Rhodotorula, Saitozyma, Solicoccozyma, Tausonia, Vanrija, and Vishniacozyma were identified. Solicoccozyma aeria represented the dominant species. The ability of isolates to grow at 10 and 15 % of NaCl was checked; about two-thirds of the strains grew at 10 %, while about 13 % of the isolates grew in medium with 15 % NaCl. this study is the first study on the culturable yeast diversity in hypersaline soils surrounding an Asian lake. 相似文献

Diurnal Temperature Range (DTR) is a meteorological index which represents temperature variation within a day. This study assesses the impact of high and low values of DTR on mortality. Distributed Lag Non-linear Models combined with a quasi-Poisson regression model was used to assess the impact of DTR on cause, age and gender specific mortality, controlled for potential confounders such as long-term trend of daily mortality, day of week effect, holidays, mean temperature, humidity, wind speed and air pollutants. As the effect of DTR may vary between the hot season (from May to October) and cold season (from November to April of the next year), we conducted analyses separately for these two seasons. In high DTR values (all percentiles), the Cumulative Relative Risk (CRR) of Non-Accidental Death, Respiratory Death and Cardiovascular Death increased in the full year and hot season, and especially in lag (0−6) of the hot season. In the cold season and high DTR values (all percentiles), the CRR of Non-Accidental Death and Cardiovascular Death decreased, but the CRR of Respiratory Death increased. Although there was no clear significant effect in low DTR values. High values of DTR increase the risk of mortality, especially in the heat season, in Urmia, Iran. 相似文献

Summary The results of detailed hydrochemical and biosedimentological studies of the sea-linked Satonda Crater Lake, Sumbawa Island/Indonesia
are presented. They revealed that the mildly alkaline, mid-water stratified and species-poor lake supports growth of cyanobacterial-red
algal calcareous reefs comparable with some ancient marine biocarbonates. The chemical and biotic changes during the last
4,000 years of the lake history have been reconstructed. They indicate that the chemistry of the lake evolved from initially
fresh water, through highly alkaline to the modern slightly alkaline quasi-marine conditions with corresponding biotic changes.
The influence of the 1815 eruption of the nearby located Tambora Volcano on the lake chemistry and resulting lithological
and biotic changes is also discussed. The lake proves to be a good model for the recently proposed hypothesis of an early
alkaline (soda) ocean. 相似文献

Length–weight and length–length parameters were calculated in the Talkhehrud River, northwestern Iran, for four freshwater fish species belonging to two families. The b values varied between 2.27 and 3.19, with a mean ± SD of 2.2777 ± 0.387. The b parameter values in the length–weight relationship equations were determined as 2.73 for Alburnus atropatenae Berg, 1925; 3.19 for Alburnoides petrubanarescui Bogutskaya & Coad, 2009; 2.92 for Capoeta capoeta (Güldenstädt, 1773); and 2.27 for Oxynoemacheilus persa (Heckel, 1847). This study provides the first reference on the LWRs and LLRs for these species in the Talkhehrud River. 相似文献

The aims of the present study were to evaluate if seasonality in semen characteristics and plasma testosterone concentrations exist in Markhoz male goats. Ten Markhoz (Angora) bucks were housed and fed according to standard recognized practices. During the observation period, semen was collected monthly with the aid of an electro-ejaculator and examined microscopically immediately after collection. Physical parameters of semen and the semen index were recorded. Blood samples were also taken monthly throughout the observation period and the plasma testosterone concentration monitored. Bucks demonstrated a higher semen quality ( P < 0.05) in autumn and summer (semen index of 965 × 10 6 and 752 × 10 6 ml −1, respectively), compared to spring and winter (semen index of 606 × 10 6 and 512 × 10 6, respectively). This coincided with a higher ( P < 0.05) plasma testosterone concentration in autumn and summer (8.1 and 10.1 ng ml −1, respectively), compared to that obtained in spring (3.0 ng ml −1) and winter (2.5 ng ml −1). During autumn and summer, the ejaculate volume (average of 1.2 and 1.0 ml), sperm output (1159 × 10 6 and 1005 × 10 6 sperm ml −1), sperm mass motility (4.2 and 4.3), sperm progressive motility (83.9 and 82.0%) and percentage live sperm (90.7 and 88.2%, respectively) of the bucks were higher ( P < 0.05) than in the spring (0.6 ml, 880 × 10 6 sperm ml −1, 3.3, 71.5% and 80.2%) and winter (0.7 ml, 863 × 10 6 sperm ml −1, 4.0, 71.5% and 84.9%, respectively). During autumn and summer, the percentage of sperm abnormalities (5.0 and 9.2%) was significantly lower than that in spring (12.9%) and winter (11.2%). The semen pH was slightly alkaline being significantly ( P < 0.05) lower in the autumn (7.1) than in spring (7.3). Data showed season of the year to influence all semen parameters evaluated—indicating that optimal buck performance may be obtained in late summer and autumn. It can thus be said that Markhoz bucks have distinct seasonal spermatogenic activity, with poorer semen characteristics being recorded during winter and spring. This may be a critical obstacle when implementing an intensive breeding system of three kidding seasons in 2 years, with natural mating being implemented. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to quantify the levels of toxic heavy metals and sodium in topsoil of farmlands around the Urmia Lake. A total of 96 topsoil samples were collected, pre-treated, and analyzed for metals using ICP-AES. Median concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Na in sampling sites were 5, 0.26, 30, 40, 13, 84, and 251 mg/kg, respectively. The enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, and contamination factor of the metals ranked them in the order of: Na > Pb > Cu > As > Cd > Zn > Ni, indicating minor contamination for them except Na and Pb with moderate contamination. Furthermore, the spatial analysis indicated that Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn had similar distribution patterns in the north and northwest lands of the lake. Principal component analysis revealed anthropogenic sources for Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the soil, whereas, sources of As and Na were most likely related to the dust emitting from the dried bed of Urmia Lake and from a cement industry. Potential ecological risk index in 7% of the sampling sites was at serious or considerable pollution level, and Cd and Pb were identified as the main pollutants. 相似文献

The saline and alkaline brines from the Sambhar Salt Lake (SSL), both from the main lake and from the solar evaporation pans at Sambhar Salt Limited, Sambhar, Rajasthan, India, were studied with respect to their chemical composition and presence of red, extremely haloalkaliphilic archaebacteria. The brines had pH values of 9.5±0.2 and a total salt content ranging from 7% (w/v) to more than 30% (w/v). Sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium sulphate were the principal salts present in these brines which lacked divalent cations (calcium and magnesium). Six strains of red, extremely haloalkaliphilic bacteria, designated SSL 1 to SSL 6, were isolated. All the isolates showed obligate requirements for sodium chloride (>15%, w/v) and high pH (>9.0). Magnesium ions were required in traces for maintaining morphological structure and pigmentation. All these strains possessed the diether core lipids, phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylglycerophosphate (PGP), and bacterioruberins characteristic of halophilic archaebacteria. The strains were assigned to the newly proposed genus Natronobacterium.Part of the paper was presented by the authors at XIV International Congress of Microbiology 7–13 September 1986, Manchester, UK 相似文献

Two novel Aspergillus species, one belonging to the section Terrei and the other to section Flavipedes, were isolated from hypersaline soils of The National Park of Lake Urmia (Iran) and are here described as Aspergillus iranicus and Aspergillus urmiensis. A polyphasic taxonomic approach comprising extrolite profiles, phenotypic characters and molecular data (beta-tubulin, calmodulin and ribosomal polymerase II second largest subunit gene sequences) was applied to determine their novel taxonomic status. Aspergillus iranicus (CBS 139561 T) is phylogenetically related to A. carneus, A. niveus, A. allahabadii and A. neoindicus, and it can be differentiated from those species by a unique extrolite pattern (citrinin, gregatins, and a terrequinone) and its conidial colour. Aspergillus urmiensis (CBS 139558 T) shares a most recent common ancestor with A. templicola. The former species produces globose vesicles, and those of A. templicola are predominantly elongate. The Aspergillus urmiensis isolates produce several uncharacterized extrolites. Two other strains obtained during this study reside in a clade, together with the type strain of A. movilensis (CCF 4410 T), and are identified accordingly. Based on the phylogenetic data presented in this study, A. frequens is reduced to synonymy with A. micronesiensis and A. mangaliensis is considered to be a synonym of A. templicola. 相似文献

SUMMARY. The vertical distribution of the zoobenthos in southeastern Lake Michigan was investigated monthly from May to November 1976. The organisms could be divided into two categories: one in which the majority of the population occurred in the upper 1 cm of substrate ( Pontoporeia, naidids, chironomids, cyclopoids, harpacticoids, cladocerans, turbellarians, ostracods, rotifers, sphaeriids and gastropods) and one in which the majority of the population occurred deeper (immature tubificids without hair setae, Stylodrilus heringianus, enchytraeids, nematodes, and tardigrades). The vertical distribution of these infaunal forms showed a marked seasonal variation. They were found in the superficial sediments in the spring, but deeper in the sediments in the autumn. This trend coincided with the seasonal occurrence of a detrital layer that overlay the sandy substrate in the spring but was absent in the autumn. 相似文献

We studied the Artemia populations existing in Lake Urmia (north‐western Iran), one of the largest habitats of Artemia in the world, in order to settle the long‐standing controversy over the sexual status of the endemic Artemia populations. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory and in the field. Cysts, collected from different sites of the lake and peripheral lagoons, were hatched and cultured to adults in the laboratory. Adult sexual and parthenogenetic animals were isolated and newly hatched nauplii from them were cultured to maturity in different salinities, ranging from 15–80 ppt. Survival levels and percentage of animals attaining adulthood were measured over a period of 30 days. In the field experiment, cysts taken from Lake Urmia were hatched and the resulting nauplii were inoculated into six earthen ponds (80–140 ppt) constructed in the vicinity of the lake. Population composition in each pond was determined over a period of two years. Results indicated that both sexual and parthenogenetic Artemia coexist in Lake Urmia. While the lake itself is dominated by sexual Artemia, the asexual populations were found to be restricted to particular areas in or near the lake. Artemia appearing seasonally in the lagoons adjacent to the lake were exclusively parthenogenetic. Parthenogens could grow, mature and reproduce at very low salinities (15–33 ppt), whereas higher salinities (above 50 ppt) were required for A. urmiana to attain sexual maturity. We consider salinity to be a major abiotic factor determining the distribution of these sexually different populations within and outside the lake. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The feeding habits of mormyrids from Lake Kainji, Nigeria, are discussed in relation to the decreased abundance of these fish since impoundment in 1968. Evidence is presented of both intra-specific seasonal variation in diet and inter-specific trophic divergence. These variable factors are discussed in relation to the degree of success achieved by certain species in the lake. 相似文献

Epilimnion-dominated profiles of dissolved uranium (U) have been observed during summer in an oxygenated Japanese lake, Lake Biwa, contrary to the commonly accepted view that U shows conservative behavior in oxygenated seas and lakes. Monthly observations were conducted to reveal the mechanism for such characteristic distribution and geochemical behavior of dissolved U in the lake. In the surface water, dissolved U concentration started to increase in spring, peaked in summer, and decreased from autumn to winter. In contrast, the concentration remained almost constant in the middle layer (40 m depth) and decreased slightly in the bottom layer (70 m depth) throughout the stagnation period. Mass balance calculations of U suggest that the major mechanism for seasonal variations in the surface layer is the supply of U, not via water inflow from the watershed, but by internal chemical reactions within the lake. A laboratory experiment using the lake water and sediment demonstrated that U was desorbed from and adsorbed onto sediment in response to variations in lake water pH. From these results, it is inferred that the seasonal variation in the concentration of dissolved U in the epilimnion results mainly from the desorptive/adsorptive processes of U between sediment/water interface in response to variation in water pH, which is affected by biological activity in the lake. 相似文献

Energy flux to a large, deep, salt lake from phytoplankton, periphyton and macrophyte primary production as well as fluvial transport and wind-transported terrestrial vegetation and dust were quantified. Average areal phytoplankton net photosynthesis was 511 mg C m −2 d −1. Highest rates were during water-blooms of the bluegreen alga, Nodularia spumigena. Although areal daily net photosynthesis by periphyton in Pyramid Lake was comparable to other salt lakes, annual carbon influx by periphyton was small due to the lake's graben morphology and moderate euphotic depth (mean, 11.9 m). Macrophytes were uncommon and, therefore a minor source of energy. Truckee River is the only major fluvial discharge to Pyramid Lake and dissolved organic carbon was the principal organic carbon fraction in river water. Large upstream water diversions coupled with several drought years resulted in an average fluvial organic carbon load of only 7.3 g Cm −2y −1 or 4% of median phytoplankton net photosynthesis. Tumbleweeds were the most common terrestrial plant material observed in Pyramid Lake comprising a maximum projected importance of 6% of total annual carbon input. Windborne dust represented < .1% of annual carbon input. Phytoplankton primary production is the predominant energy source to Pyramid Lake, accounting for over 80% of annual carbon influx. The relative magnitude of autochthonous and allochthonous vectors to the annual carbon budget of this desert salt lake are comparable to those of the few other large lakes for which detailed energy input budgets have been calculated. 相似文献

This study examined the effect of different salt concentrations (0.05-3 M of NaCl) on the kinetics of growth, total carotenoids and beta-carotene (all-trans and 9-cis) accumulated in Dunaliella tertiolecta DCCBC26, a microalgae strain isolated from the Urmia hypersaline lake, northwest of Iran. Results indicated that the highest amount of carotenoids detected (11.73 mg/l) was in the salinity of 0.5 M NaCl during the stationary growth phase. The percentage of the all-trans and 9-cis-beta-carotene in the exponential phase were 92% and 32% in salinities of 3 M and 0.5 M, respectively. However, only 23% of the beta-carotene was detected in the stationary growth phase of the microalgae in 0.5 M salinity and was 9-cis isomer. 相似文献

- 1 Growth rates of two dominant Lake Baikal phytoplankton, the winter diatom Aulacoseira baicalensis and the summer cyanobacterium Synechocystis limnetica, were measured in the laboratory under varied temperature and light regimes to determine the potential role of these abiotic factors in seasonal species succession in the lake.
- 2 Aulacoseira baicalensis grew best at low temperature and not at all above 8 °C. Its maximum instantaneous growth rate was 0.15 d‐1 recorded at 2–3 °C. Cells grew faster as temperature decreased, apparently in contrast to conventional Q10‐based temperature‐growth relationships.
- 3 The picoplankter Synechocystis limnetica did not grow at 2–3 or 5–6 °C, but grew at a rate of 0.24 d‐1 at the highest incubation temperature of 17 °C. Maximum growth rate was 0.35 d‐1 at 8 °C.
- 4 Saturation irradiances (Ik) for growth of Aulacoseira baicalensis and Synechocystis limnetica were near pre‐acclimation values of 40 µmol m‐2 s‐1. At temperatures conducive to growth, both phytoplankters grew at all irradiances tested, except for A. baicalensis which would not grow at values above 300 µmol m‐2 s‐1 at 8 °C.
- 5 We conclude that temperature is a major driving force for the seasonal succession of species in Lake Baikal. Other factors, including vertical mixing of the water column and grazing by zooplankton, may also play important roles.
