We examine the relative importance of processes that underlie plant population abundance and distribution. Two opposing views dominate the field. One posits that the ability to establish at a site is determined by the availability of suitable microsites (establishment limitation), while the second asserts that recruitment is limited by the availability of seeds (seed limitation). An underlying problem is that establishment and seed limitation are typically viewed as mutually exclusive. We conducted a meta-analysis of seed addition experiments to assess the relative strength of establishment and seed limitation to seedling recruitment. We asked (1) To what degree are populations seed and establishment limited? (2) Under what conditions (e.g., habitats and life-history traits) are species more or less limited by each? (3) How can seed addition studies be better designed to enhance our understanding of plant recruitment? We found that, in keeping with previous studies, most species are seed limited. However, the effects of seed addition are typically small, and most added seeds fail to recruit to the seedling stage. As a result, establishment limitation is stronger than seed limitation. Seed limitation was greater for large-seeded species, species in disturbed microsites, and species with relatively short-lived seed banks. Most seed addition experiments cannot assess the relationship between number of seeds added and number of subsequent recruits. This shortcoming can be overcome by increasing the number and range of seed addition treatments.  相似文献

Acacia dealbata is an invasive south-eastern Australian tree that produces a persistent soil seed bank. In order to characterize the seed bank in plots invaded by A. dealbata and to understand its implications for management and re-invasion risk, density, germinability, and viability of the seed bank were evaluated in five sites in central Portugal. Soil samples were collected in A. dealbata invaded plots and adjacent areas and screened for seeds, which were then quantified and germinated at 25 °C. A subset of seeds was first exposed to 60 °C to assess the effect of high soil temperature on dormancy breaking. Variables influencing differences between sites were explored with generalized linear mixed models with a Poisson distribution. Inside A. dealbata invaded plots the seed bank averaged 4608 seeds/m2, reaching up to 62,747 seeds/m2; in adjacent areas, up to 14 m from the plots, only 9 seeds/m2 were found. Seed bank densities were mostly influenced by stoniness, number of fires in the last 10 years, and density of trees and roots. Almost 90% of seeds were viable, but only 8.6% germinated without treatment. Nearly 70% of seeds exposed to 60 °C germinated without any physical stimulation, suggesting that high soil temperatures can effectively break seed dormancy. The high density and viability of A. dealbata’s seed bank and its ability to disperse seeds far from the parent plants contribute to the species’ invasive success. These features combined with heat events that can overcome seed dormancy need to be considered in the management of this species.  相似文献

5′ untranslated regions (UTRs) are important sequence elements that modulate the expression of genes. Using the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene driven by the GluC promoter for the rice-seed storage-protein glutelin, we evaluated the potential of the 5′-UTRs of six seed storage-protein genes in enhancing the expression levels of the foreign gene in stable transgenic rice lines. All of the 5′-UTRs significantly enhanced the expression level of the GluC promoter without altering its expression pattern. The 5′-UTRs of Glb-1 and GluA-1 increased the expression of GUS by about 3.36- and 3.11-fold, respectively. The two 5′-UTRs downstream of the Glb-1, OsAct2 and CMV35S promoters also increased GUS expression level in stable transgenic rice lines or in transient expression protoplasts. Therefore, the enhancements were independent of the promoter sequence. Real-time quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed that the increase in protein production was not accompanied by alteration in mRNA levels, which suggests that the enhancements were due to increasing the translational efficiencies of the mRNA. The 5′-UTRs of Glb-1 and GluA-1, when combined with strong promoters, might be ideal candidates for high production of recombinant proteins in rice seeds.  相似文献

Variation of seed -amylase inhibitors was investigated in 1 154 cultivated and 726 non-cultivated (wild and weedy) accessions of the common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L. Four -amylase inhibitor types were recognized based on the inhibtion by seed extracts of the activities of porcine pancreatic -amylase and larval -amylase and larval -amylase of the Mexican bean weevil, Zabrotes subfasciatus Boheman. Of the 1 880 accessions examined most (1 734) were able to inhibit porcine pancreatic -amylase activity, but were inactive against the Z. subfasciatus larval -amylase; 41 inhibited only the larval -amylase activity, 52 inhibited the activities of the two -amylases, and 53 did not inhibit the activity of either of the -amylases. The four different inhibitor types were designated as AI-1, AI2, AI-3, and AI-0, respectively. These four inhibitor types were identified by the banding patterns of seed glycoproteins in the range of 14–20 kDa by using SDSpolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Additionally, four different banding patterns were recognized in accessions with AI-1, and were designated as AI-1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d. Two different patterns of the accessions lacking an -amylase inhibitory activity were identified and designated as AI-0a and AI-0b. The largest diversity for seed -amylase inhibitors was observed in non-cultivated accessions collected from Mexico where all eight inhibitor types were detected. The possible relationships between the variation of seed -amylase inhibitors and bruchid resistance are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The inner epidermis of the inner integument of cotton seed coats (fringe-layer) and the cuticles between this cell layer and the nucellus were examined in the light and electron microscope at different times of their development. The cells of the fringe-layer contain only small vacuoles and their cytoplasm is densely packed with organelles and free and membrane-bound polysomes. The lateral walls contain many plasmodesmata. At the time when the fruit capsules stop growing, the fringe-cells produce a cell wall labyrinth, resembling that of transfer cells. The cell wall labyrinth is restricted to the lateral walls. The differentiated state of the fringe-cells is short-lived. At about the time of elaboration of the cell wall labyrinth most of them become progressively vacuolated, lignify, and lose their cytoplasmic constituents. The development of the fringe-layer is well correlated with other developmental events in the inner integument, but not with the filling of embryo and endosperm with reserve substances.At anthesis, the fringe-layer and nucellus are covered by a thin cuticle proper of about 20 nm. After anthesis, the nucellar cells start to produce a cuticular layer of considerable, but variable, thickness (0.25–2.5 m), containing a polysaccharide network.In drying seeds the cells of the fringe-layer disrupt. The thin outer tangential wall remains attached to the seed coat. The rest of the cell, together with the cuticles and the collapsed cells of the nucellus, form a protective layer around embryo and endosperm, remaining attached to the seed coat at the chalazal end.  相似文献

Herbicides are the most successful weed control technology ever developed. To assess the effects of herbicides on non-target plants, a study was carried out by using Imazethapyr (IM) on JG-11 cultivar of chickpea germination and early growth. Hydroponic conditions with five concentrations (0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 ppm) of IM were employed along with control. On the termination day of germination, IM had no effect on the percentage of seed germination but a significant decrease in the length of radicle and plumule, speed of germination, vigour index, tolerance index, and pigment content was observed with an increase in concentration of the herbicide. Increase in phytotoxicity percent and mean germination time along with a marginal decrease in dry and fresh weight was seen with increasing IM dose. The results implied that a higher concentration of IM resulted in a decline in seed germination and early growth of non-target or main crop i.e. chickpea.  相似文献

Invasive ants threaten native communities, in part, through their potential to disrupt mutualisms, yet invasive species may also facilitate native species. The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) is one of the most conspicuous invasive ants in North America and its high densities, combined with its potential to displace native ants, have led to concerns that it may disrupt ant-plant seed dispersal mutualisms. We examined the potential of fire ants to disperse seeds in the longleaf pine ecosystem by comparing the removal of elaiosome-bearing seeds by fire ants versus native ants. A total of 14 ant species were observed removing seeds, with fire ants responsible for more than half of all removals. While fire ants were the dominant seed remover in this system, they did not remove significantly more seeds than would be expected based on their population density (46% of ground-dwelling ants). Moreover, red imported fire ants were similar to native ants with respect to distance of seed movement and frequency of moving seeds back to the nest. Areas of higher fire ant densities were found to have greater rates of seed removal by ants without a subsequent drop in seed dispersal by native ants, suggesting that fire ant-invaded areas may experience overall higher levels of seed dispersal. Thus, fire ants may actually facilitate dispersal of elaiosome-bearing plant species in the longleaf pine ecosystem.  相似文献

A major obstacle to native orchid production is difficulty in seed germination. Culture media and light effects on seed germination of Calopogon tuberosus var. tuberosus, a native orchid with horticultural potential, were studied. Culture media included Knudson C, Malmgren modified terrestrial orchid, and PhytoTechnology orchid seed sowing. Effects of 8 weeks continual darkness, 8 weeks 16-h photoperiod, 2 weeks dark followed by 6 weeks 16-h photoperiod, 4 weeks dark followed by 4 weeks 16-h photoperiod, and 6 weeks dark followed by 2 weeks 16-h photoperiod were examined. Percent seed germination was highest on Knudson C after 8 weeks culture; however, seedling development was enhanced on PhytoTechnology seed sowing medium during 8 weeks culture under a 16-h photoperiod. This suggests that while KC and darkness promoted seed germination, P723 and light enhanced further seedling development. Seedlings of C. tuberosus readily acclimated to greenhouse conditions.  相似文献

Six α-monoglucosyl derivatives of ginsenoside Rg1 (G-Rg1) were synthesized by transglycosylation reaction of rice seed α-glucosidase in the reaction mixture containing maltose as a glucosyl donor and G-Rg1 as an acceptor. Their chemical structures were identified by spectroscopic analysis, and the effects of reaction time, pH, and glycosyl donors on transglycosylation reaction were investigated. The results showed that rice seed α-glucosidase transfers α-glucosyl group from maltose to G-Rg1 by forming either α-1,3 (α-nigerosyl)-, α-1,4 (α-maltosyl)-, or α-1,6 (α-isomaltosyl)-glucosidic linkages in β-glucose moieties linked at the C6- and C20-position of protopanaxatriol (PPT)-type aglycone. The optimum pH range for the transglycosylation reaction was between 5.0 and 6.0. Rice seed α-glucosidase acted on maltose, soluble starch, and PNP α-D-glucopyranoside as glycosyl donors, but not on glucose, sucrose, or trehalose. These α-monoglucosyl derivatives of G-Rg1 were easily hydrolyzed to G-Rg1 by rat small intestinal and liver α-glucosidase in vitro.  相似文献

Summary Abscisin II (Ab II) inhibited germination of seeds of four species of grasses. The effects ranged from slight retardation of the onset of germination from the lowest concentration (0.1 mg/l) to complete inhibition throughout the 17-day test period from the highest concentration (10 mg/l). Intermediate concentrations induced some abnormalities of development.Seed viability was not destroyed even by the highest Ab II concentration applied, normal development and growth resuming when seeds were transferred from abscisin solutions to water.We are grateful to Dr. J. The germination of lettuce fruits and legume seeds was affected by the imbibition of solutions of certain amino acids. Seedling growth was inhibited more markedly than germination by these compounds. Non-protein amino acids were, as a group, more effective inhibitors of germination and seedling growth than were protein amino acids, with the exception of lysine. Abstract

TGF-β is one of the key players involved in the induction and maintenance of mucosal immune tolerance to dietary proteins through the induction of regulatory T cells. In order to utilize rice-based TGF-β as a tool to promote oral immune tolerance induction, high production of TGF-β is essentially required. When the codon-optimized mTGF-β was expressed as a secretory protein by ligating an N-terminal signal peptide and C-terminal KDEL ER retention signal under the control of the endosperm-specific rice storage protein glutelin GluB-1 promoter, accumulation level was low in stable transgenic rice seeds. Then, to increase the accumulation level of mTGF-β, it was expressed as fusion proteins by inserting into the C terminus of acidic subunit of glutelin GluA and the variable region of 26 kDa globulin. When fused with the glutelin, it could accumulate well as visible bands by CBB staining gel, but not for the 26 kDa globulin. Unexpectedly, expression of homodimeric mTGF-β linked by a 6×Gly1×Ser linker as secretory protein resulted in higher level of accumulation. This expression level was further enhanced by reduction of some endogenous prolamins by RNA interference. The monomeric and dimeric mTGF-βs were deposited in ER-derived PBs containing prolamins. When highly produced in rice seed, it is notable that most of ER-derived PBs were distorted and granulated. Step-wise extraction of storage proteins from rice seeds suggested that the mTGF-β strongly interacted with cysteine-rich prolamins via disulfide bonds. This result was also supported by the finding that reducing agent was absolutely required for mTGF-β extraction.

Forest destruction and disturbance can have long-term consequences for species diversity and ecosystem processes such as seed dispersal. Understanding these consequences is a crucial component of conserving vulnerable ecosystems. In the heavily fragmented and disturbed Kakamega Forest, western Kenya, we studied seed dispersal of Prunus africana (Rosaceae). In the main forest, five forest fragments, and differently disturbed sites, we quantified the overall frugivore community as an indicator for species diversity. Furthermore, we determined the frugivores on 28 fruiting P. africana trees, estimated seed dispersal, crop size and the general fruit availability of surrounding trees. During the overall frugivore census we recorded 49 frugivorous species; 36 of them were observed visiting P. africana trees and feeding on their fruits. Although overall frugivore species richness was 1.1 times lower in fragments than in main forest sites and 1.02 times higher in highly disturbed than in less disturbed sites, P. africana experienced 1.1 times higher numbers of frugivores in fragments than in main forest sites and 1.5 times higher numbers of frugivores in highly disturbed than in less disturbed sites. Correspondingly, seed dispersal was 1.5 times higher in fragments than in main forest sites and 1.5 times higher in more disturbed than less disturbed sites. Fruit availability of surrounding trees and crop size influenced the number of visitors to some degree. Thus, the number of dispersed seeds seemed to be slightly higher in fragmented and highly disturbed sites. This indicates that loss of single species does not necessarily lead to a decrease of ecosystem services. However, loss of diversity could be a problem in the long term, as a multitude of species might act as buffer against future environmental change.  相似文献

To predict the effect of global warming on plant reproductive success, seed-sets of spring ephemerals were compared between a year of extremely warm spring (2002) and normal years at cool-temperate deciduous forests in northern Japan. The spring of 2002 was the warmest in the last 40years and most spring-ephemeral plants bloomed 7–17days earlier than usual. The seed-set of bumblebee-pollinated Corydalis ambigua drastically decreased in 2002 in every population. The small bee-pollinated Gagea lutea also significantly decreased in 2002. However, the seed-sets of two fly pollinated species, Adonis ramosa and Anemone flaccida, were not influenced by early flowering. These results indicat that the effect of global warming on seed production of spring ephemerals differs between species depending on the type of pollinators, and that bee-pollinated species can have serious impacts on reproductive success as a result of climate change.  相似文献
