Abstract. The ratio of the concentration of honeydew total amino acids to total sugars in the honeydew of eight species of aphids, all feeding on tansy, Tanacetum vulgare (L.), was determined and correlated with honeydew production and ant‐attendance. The honeydew of the five ant‐attended aphid species [Metopeurum fuscoviride (Stroyan), Trama troglodytes (v. Hayd), Aphis vandergooti (Börner), Brachycardus cardui (L.), Aphis fabae (Scopoli)] was rich in total amino acids, ranging from 12.9 to 20.8 nmol µL?1 compared with the unattended aphid Macrosiphoniella tanacetaria (Kalt.) with only 3 nmol µL?1. Asparagine, glutamine, glutamic acid and serine (all nonessential amino acids) were the predominant amino acids in the honeydew of all species. The total concentration of amino acids in the phloem sap of tansy was much higher (78.7 nmol µL?1) then in the honeydew samples, and the predominant amino acids were glutamate (34.3%) and threonine (17.7%). A somewhat unexpected result was the finding that those aphid species with the highest total amino acid concentration in the honeydew always had the highest concentration of sugars. The lowest amino acid–sugar combined value was 104–28.8 nmol µL?1 in the non ant‐attended species M. tanacetaria, and the highest value was an average of 270–89.9 nmol µL?1 for the three most intensely attended aphid species M. fuscoviride, A. vandergooti and T. troglodytes. There is no evidence that any single amino acid or group of amino acids in the honeydew acted as an attractant for ant‐attendance in these eight aphid species. The richness of the honeydew (rate of secretion × total concentration of sugars), along with the presence of the attractant sugar melezitose, comprised the critical factors determining the extent of ant‐attendance of the aphids feeding on T. vulgare. The high total amino acid concentration in sugar‐rich honeydews can be explained by the high flow‐through of nutrients in aphids that are particularly well attended by ants. 相似文献

Electrical penetration graphs (EPGs) were used to examine the probing behaviour of adult apterous Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus) on barley seedlings grown under conditions of nitrogen or water stress. Aphids took significantly longer to reach and ingest from sieve elements of nitrogen-deficient seedlings than from nitrogen-sufficient seedlings but there were no such differences between water-stressed or well-watered seedlings. On both nitrogen and water-stressed seedlings the average length of each individual period of salivation into the sieve element was significantly greater compared with their respective unstressed controls. 相似文献

Summary Variation in the nitrogen content of seed of six barley cultivars was brought about by growing parent plants at four nitrogen levels. Shoot dry weight of plants grown for 23 days from these seeds was generally enhanced by an increase in seed nitrogen content. The most responsive cultivar was a primitive type of barley from Ethiopia. Cultivars with a longer breeding history were less responsive. Risø 1508 apparently had physiological and biochemical limitations in responding to extra seed nitrogen. In the barley cultivars studied extra seed nitrogen seems to supplement, rather than substitute for, nitrogen fertilizer in the seed bed. 相似文献

characters. Nineteen doubled-haploid (DH) lines from the Dicktoo×Morex mapping population were phenotyped in controlled- environment photoperiod experiments to determine the role of two previously
detected QTLs on the developmental patterns of barley. The QTLs are hypothesised to represent the effects of the Ppd and Sh2 loci on chromosomes 2 (2H) and 7 (5H), respectively. Alleles at the Ppd locus were found to be vary in response to photoperiod duration. Vernalization had some effect on alleles at both loci. The
presence of early and late- flowering transgressive segregants in this mapping population can be explained by interactions
between the Ppd and Sh2 loci. The Ppd and Sh2 loci are hypothesised to be homoeologous with the Ppd and Vrn1 loci of wheat.

Summary With a view to examine the effect of pre-sowing exposure of seeds to gamma radiation (3000 r) on the drought resistance behaviour
of barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L., Var. K12), a pot-culture experiment was conducted at a glasshouse attached to the Department of Plant Physiology. The plants were
subjected to wilting treatments at tillering stage and were maintained so for ten days. Subsequently, observations on survival
capacity, growth behaviour and physiological changes were made during the wilting period. The data obtained were subjected
to statistical analysis.
Reduction in soil moisture causes a set-back in the physiological status of barley plants and thereby inhibits the crop growth.
Presowing exposure of seeds to gamma-radiation induced drought tolerance in barley plants. It not only improved the growth
behaviour but also maintained an active metabolism in plants even under wilting condition.
Although the investigation is of preliminary nature, but it certainly offers newer scope of research towards useful utilization
of gamma radiation in relation to drought tolerance in crops.

The cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae is one of the most destructive pests in Cruciferaceae or Brassicaceae plant family around the world. According to this pest rapid resistance to insecticide, using the resistant cultivars should be evaluated. In the present study, the different canola cultivars resistance against the cabbage aphid and the population fluctuations in canola fields and also the natural parasitism are evaluated in Shahre-rey region. To evaluate the population fluctuations and its natural parasitism on the RGS003, SLMOO46, Karag2, Licord, Sarigol, Opera, Ocapi and Talaei canola cultivars were cultivated in four replications using the complete randomised block design. The population fluctuations studies showed that the pest is active during the canola growth period in studied region, but the peak of population and damage is found in 6 May month. The results showed that natural parasitism percentage of cabbage aphid on different canola cultivars has not significant difference, but the parasitism amount in different sampling dates was significantly different, so that the natural parasitism maximum observed in date 29 April. These results showed that the different canola cultivars have significant effects on cabbage aphid and parasitoids activity amount. Using the present results, the recognised cultivars in integrated pest management programmes can be used to grow the laboratory aphids as the parasitoids hosts. 相似文献

The effects of root feeding by larvae of Sitona hispidulus (F.) (a common weevil pest of white clover) on the rate of transfer of nitrogen between plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were investigated using a nutrient slant board technique. Clover plants, labelled with 15N were grown adjacent to ryegrass plants and were either infested with Sitona larvae or not infested. Ryegrass plants associated with the infested clover plants had a significantly higher dry matter yield and nitrogen content (75% and 74% respectively) than the uninvested plants, after 33 days exposure to insect herbivory. It was concluded that root feeding insects could play an important role in the cycling of nitrogen in grass/clover swards. 相似文献

Wild-type (Steptoe) and abscisic acid (ABA)-deficient mutant(Az34) genotypes of barley were grown in compacted soil to examinethe potential role of ABA as a root-to-shoot signal. Root andshoot growth and leaf conductance were all reduced when plantswere grown in compacted soil with a bulk density of 1.7g cm3,relative to uncompacted control plants (1.1 g cm3. Theseeffects occurred in the absence of detectable changes in leafwater status or foliar abscisic acid (ABA) content. Analysisof Steptoe and Az34 xylem sap showed that the ABA concentrationwas greatly increased at 6 d after emergence (6 DAE) when seedlingswere grown in compacted soil (1.7 g cm3); however, ABAconcentrations were never as high in the mutant as in the wildtype. The increase in xylem sap ABA concentration observed athigh bulk density was closely correlated with reductions inleaf conductance, but not leaf area. These increases were transitory,and xylem sap ABA concentrations subsequently decreased towardsthe control level by 18 DAE in both genotypes. The ABA-deficient mutant, Az34, produced a much lower leaf areathan Steptoe at a bulk density of 1.6 g cm3. Examinationof epidermal characteristics indicates that this effect resultedmainly from reductions in cell expansion rather than cell division,suggesting that the higher ABA concentrations detected in xylemsap from the wild-type Steptoe may have exerted a positive rolein maintaining leaf expansion in this treatment. Abstract The efficacy of aqueous extracts of cashew, Anacardium occidentale L. products was tested on Legume flower bud thrips on field cowpea in the 1999 and 2000 seasons using nutseed and nutshell at 10% w/v, bark and leaf at 20% w/v. Aqueous extract of cashew nutshell was superior to other cashew products in reducing thrip populations in cowpea flowers and compared favourably with cypermethrin + dimethoate. Pod density per plant was significantly enhanced on cowpea plants sprayed with aqueous extract of cashew nutshell compared to other extracts. Cashew extract contains cardole (a caustic substance) and anacardic acid, which may have been responsible for its insecticidal effect on thrips. This result indicates the potential of cashew products especially the nutshell for integrated management of thrips in legume crops. 相似文献

Inositol derivative compounds provide a nutrient source for soil bacteria that possess the ability to degrade such compounds. Rhizobium strains that are capable of utilizing certain inositol derivatives are better colonizers of their host plants. We have cloned and determined the nucleotide sequence of the myo-inositol dehydrogenase gene (idhA) of Sinorhizobium fredii USDA191, the first enzyme responsible for inositol catabolism. The deduced IdhA protein has a molecular mass of 34,648 Da and shows significant sequence similarity with protein sequences of Sinorhizobium meliloti IdhA and MocA; Bacillus subtilis IolG, YrbE, and YucG; and Streptomyces griseus StrI. S. fredii USDA191 idhA mutants revealed no detectable myo-inositol dehydrogenase activity and failed to grow on myo-inositol as a sole carbon source. Northern blot analysis and idhA-lacZ fusion expression studies indicate that idhA is inducible by myo-inositol. S. fredii USDA191 idhA mutant was drastically affected in its ability to reduce nitrogen and revealed deteriorating bacteroids inside the nodules. The number of bacteria recovered from such nodules was about threefold lower than the number of bacteria isolated from nodules initiated by S. fredii USDA191. In addition, the idhA mutant was also severely affected in its ability to compete with the wild-type strain in nodulating soybean. Under competitive conditions, nodules induced on soybean roots were predominantly occupied by the parent strain, even when the idhA mutant was applied at a 10-fold numerical advantage. Thus, we conclude that a functional idhA gene is required for efficient nitrogen fixation and for competitive nodulation of soybeans by S. fredii USDA191. 相似文献

Interactions of two tubicolous, deposit-feeding polychaetes, Clymenella torquata (Leidy) and Polydora ligni Webster, with a filter-feeding bivalve, Gemma gemma (Totten), were examined to test the functional group hypothesis that small, filter-feeding bivalves with large young should attain high densities with tube-builders of any trophic mode because the large young escape predation by tube-builders. The prediction was not supported by Polydora and Gemma, since the two species have not been reported to coexist in high densities in nature. In laboratory experiments, Polydora reduced recruitment and adult survival of Gemma relative to a control. Polydora preyed on juvenile clams and reduced the time which adult clams had their siphons in the feeding position, relative to a control.For Clymenella and Gemma, the functional group hypothesis made the correct prediction (i.e. the two species are reported to coexist in high densities in nature), but for the wrong reason. The size of Gemma's offspring is not related to the intensity of Clymenella predation. Clymenella does not ingest Gemma since the worm does not usually feed from the zone occupied by the clam. In contrast to Polydora, Clymenella did not reduce the time which clams fully extend and open their siphons relative to a control. In laboratory experiments Clymenella increased adult bivalve growth, survival after one year, and recruit size after one month. Clam life history characteristics were similar in the Clymenella and Clymenella plus Polydora treatments because the number of surviving Polydora was reduced by a negative interaction with Clymenella.The tube-builders had different effects on the filter-feeder, Gemma, because these tube-building species differ in feeding position, diet and behavior. Manganese (Mn) constitutes an essential co‐factor in the oxygen‐evolving complex of photosystem II (PSII). Consequently, Mn deficiency reduces photosynthetic efficiency and leads to changes in PSII composition. In order to study these changes, multiplexed protein assays are advantageous. Here, we developed a multiplexed antibody‐based assay and analysed selected PSII subunits in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). A selection of antibodies were labelled with specific lanthanides and immunoreacted with thylakoids exposed to Mn deficiency after western blotting. Subsequently, western blot membranes were analysed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS), which allowed selective and relative quantitative analysis via the different lanthanides. The method was evaluated against established liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC‐ESI‐MS/MS) methods, based on data‐dependent acquisition (DDA) and selected reaction monitoring (SRM). Manganese deficiency resulted in a general decrease in PSII protein abundances, an effect that was shown to be reversible upon Mn re‐supplementation. Specifically, the extrinsic proteins PsbP and PsbQ showed Mn‐dependent changes in abundances. Similar trends in the response to Mn deficiency at the protein level were observed when comparing DDA, SRM and LA‐ICP‐MS results. A biologically important exception to this trend was the loss of PsbO in the SRM analysis, which highlights the necessity of validating protein changes by more than one technique. The developed method enables a higher number of proteins to be multiplexed in comparison to existing immunoassays. Furthermore, multiplexed protein analysis by LA‐ICP‐MS provides an analytical platform with high throughput appropriate for screening large collections of plants. 相似文献

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) may be a suitable crop for the bio‐economy as it requires low inputs while producing a high and valuable biomass yield. With the aim of understanding the physiological basis of hemp's high resource‐use efficiency and yield potential, photosynthesis was analysed on leaves exposed to a range of nitrogen and temperature levels. Light‐saturated net photosynthesis rate (Amax) increased with an increase in leaf nitrogen up to 31.2 ± 1.9 μmol m?2 s?1 at 25 °C. The Amax initially increased with an increase in leaf temperature (TL), levelled off at 25–35 °C and decreased when TL became higher than 35 °C. Based on a C3 leaf photosynthesis model, we estimated mesophyll conductance (gm), efficiency of converting incident irradiance into linear electron transport under limiting light (κ2LL), linear electron transport capacity (Jmax), Rubisco carboxylation capacity (Vcmax), triose phosphate utilization capacity (Tp) and day respiration (Rd), using data obtained from gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements at different leaf positions and various levels of incident irradiance, CO2 and O2. The effects of leaf nitrogen and temperature on photosynthesis parameters were consistent at different leaf positions and among different growth environments except for κ2LL, which was higher for plants grown in the glasshouse than for those grown outdoors. Model analysis showed that compared with cotton and kenaf, hemp has higher photosynthetic capacity when leaf nitrogen is <2.0 g N m?2. The high photosynthetic capacity measured in this study, especially at low nitrogen level, provides additional evidence that hemp can be grown as a sustainable bioenergy crop over a wide range of climatic and agronomic conditions. 相似文献

Two primary biochemical reactions in seed ageing (lipid peroxidation and non-enzymatic protein glycosylation with reducing sugars) have been studied under different seed water contents and storage temperatures, and the role of the glassy state in retarding biochemical deterioration examined. The viability loss of Vigna radiata seeds during storage is associated with Maillard reactions; however, the contribution of primary biochemical reactions varies under different storage conditions. Biochemical deterioration and viability loss are greatly retarded in seeds stored below a high critical temperature (approximately 40 degrees C above glass transition temperature). This high critical temperature corresponds to the cross-over temperature (T(c)) of glass transition where molecular dynamics changes from a solid-like system to a normal liquid system. The data show that seed ageing slows down significantly, even before seed tissue enters into the glassy state. 相似文献

The area covered by visible mycelium of E. cichoracearum on the upper surface of leaves 4, 8, 12 and 16 of tobacco plants in field plots in Rhodesia was expressed as percentages of the proximal and distal halves at weekly intervals. Free amino nitrogen and carbohydrate in discs from proximal and distal halves of the same leaves were analysed when each leaf was expanding rapidly and was not infected, and several weeks later, when the rate of expansion had slowed down and there was slight infection. On two other occasions, similar leaf discs were inoculated with conidia, to measure the percentage germination and hyphal length from individual conidia after incubation for 2–3 days at constant temperature and humidity; duplicate discs were chemically analysed. Leaves were not susceptible until at least 6 weeks after they had emerged from the bud. Soluble carbohydrate increased and free amino nitrogen decreased during the change from resistance to susceptibility. Proximal parts of leaves were usually infected first; they initially contained less amino nitrogen and soluble carbohydrate than distal parts. All parts of the leaf seemed to be equally susceptible later, when there were no differences in their amino nitrogen or soluble carbohydrate. Upper leaves of intact plants had more natural infection than those from corresponding leaves from topped plants. More conidia germinated on discs from them and produced longer hyphae. The discs from intact plants contained less free amino nitrogen and more soluble carbohydrate than those from topped plants. The accuracy of visual assessments of susceptibility was, generally, confirmed by measurements of percentage germination and length of hyphae from individual conidia on leaf discs. Regressions of hyphal length on leaf composition showed that susceptibility was apparently related inversely to free amino nitrogen and water content and directly to insoluble carbohydrate per unit dry matter. 相似文献

The development of water stress resistant lines of commercial tomato by breeding or genetic engineering is possible, but will take considerable time before commercial varieties are available for production. However, grafting commercial tomato lines on drought resistant rootstock may produce drought tolerant commercial tomato lines much more rapidly. Due to changing climates and the need for commercial production of vegetables in low quality fields there is an urgent need for stress tolerant commercial lines of vegetables such as tomato. In previous observations we identified a scion root stock combination (‘BHN 602’ scion grafted onto ‘Jjak Kkung’ rootstock hereafter identified as 602/Jjak) that had a qualitative drought-tolerance phenotype when compared to the non-grafted line. Based on this initial observation, we studied photosynthesis and vegetative above-ground growth during mild-drought for the 602/Jjak compared with another scion-rootstock combination (‘BHN 602’ scion grafted onto ‘Cheong Gang’ rootstock hereafter identified as 602/Cheong) and a non-grafted control. Overall above ground vegetative growth was significantly lower for 602/Jjak in comparison to the other plant lines. Moreover, water potential reduction in response to mild drought was significantly less for 602/Jjak, yet stomatal conductance of all plant-lines were equally inhibited by mild-drought. Light saturated photosynthesis of 602/Jjak was less affected by low water potential than the other two lines as was the % reduction in mesophyll conductance. Therefore, the Jjak Kkung rootstock caused aboveground growth reduction, water conservation and increased photosynthetic tolerance of mild drought. These data show that different rootstocks can change the photosynthetic responses to drought of a high yielding, commercial tomato line. Also, this rapid discovery of one scion-rootstock combination that provided mild-drought tolerance suggests that screening more scion-rootstock combination for stress tolerance may rapidly yield commercially viable, stress tolerant lines of tomato. 相似文献
