Spatial and temporal aspects of overwintering in the holocyclic sycamore aphid Drepanosiphum platanoidis (Schrank) (Homoptera: Callaphididae) were investigated. Eggs of D. platanoidis were principally laid on trunks and branches of Acer pseudoplatanusL., at considerable distances from the buds. Trunks with rough bark, followed by branches with moderate roughness supported more overwintering eggs than the relatively exposed smooth surfaces of twigs and terminal buds. Eggs were aggregated on rough bark. Aspect had no effect on the number of eggs laid. Experimental manipulations varying ovipara densities showed intra-specific competition among oviparae for optimal oviposition sites. Overwintering egg mortality was a function of time, with the greatest mortality rate occurring in late winter. Egg mortality varied from 80.4% to 76.9% on trunks and 83.0% to 65.9% on branches in 1996 and 1997.  相似文献

Seed samples collected from female Urtica dioica plants in the field showed considerable inter-family variation in the sex ratio (faction of males). To investigate the inheritance pattern of the sex ratio trait, crosses were performed between individual male and female plants from different sex ratio families. Our results suggest, at least for the families studied here, that maternal parents strongly contribute to the variation in the primary sex ratio. Furthermore, progeny sex ratios from reciprocal crosses were significantly different and resembled the sex ratios produced by their maternal parents. We discuss the possible mechanisms underlying maternal control.  相似文献

Modern sexual selection theory indicates that reproductive costs rather than the operational sex ratio predict the intensity of sexual selection. We investigated sexual selection in the polygynandrous common lizard Lacerta vivipara . This species shows male aggression, causing high mating costs for females when adult sex ratios (ASR) are male-biased. We manipulated ASR in 12 experimental populations and quantified the intensity of sexual selection based on the relationship between reproductive success and body size. In sharp contrast to classical sexual selection theory predictions, positive directional sexual selection on male size was stronger and positive directional selection on female size weaker in female-biased populations than in male-biased populations. Thus, consistent with modern theory, directional sexual selection on male size was weaker in populations with higher female mating costs. This suggests that the costs of breeding, but not the operational sex ratio, correctly predicted the strength of sexual selection.  相似文献

This article examines the abundance, life history, host‐plant relationships, and overwintering biology of Acyrthosiphon calvulus Ossiannilsson (Homoptera: Aphididae) as a precursor to understanding its rarity and potential response to a changing climate. Acyrthosiphon calvulus is restricted to a few scattered localities on the west coast of Spitsbergen, Svalbard, Norway, where it reproduces on Salix polaris WG (Salicaceae) and its taxonomically unrelated root parasite Pedicularis hirsuta L. (Scrophulariaceae). Acyrthosiphon calvulus overwinters as eggs. Hatching fundatrices give rise directly to males and oviparae, which mate and lay overwintering eggs. The life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of S. polaris and appears genetically programmed, lacking summer generations of viviparae. Alate forms are similarly unknown. The progeny sequence of fundatrices resulted in a sex ratio for the sexuales that is strongly female biased (3:1). Eggs hatch coincided with budburst in early June and fundatrices developed on the expanding leaves. Egg production by oviparae corresponded with leaf senescence in July and August. Overwintering egg survival was high, with supercooling points ranging from ?29 to ?40 °C, lower than the extreme winter minimum temperature recorded (?28 °C). Egg development and hatching occurred at or below 5 °C and sub‐zero temperatures were not required to break diapause. The scarcity and fragmented distribution of A. calvulus is discussed in the context of the ubiquity of its host plants on Spitsbergen.  相似文献

Abstract: The endoparasitoid Campoletis chlorideae and its host Helicoverpa armigera were reared in the laboratory to determine the progeny sex ratio of C. chlorideae in the presence and absence of male parasitoids. It was observed that the presence of male parasitoids affects the progeny sex ratio by decreasing the number of females in the offspring population, i.e. a significant increase in the proportion of males was observed in united sexes. Therefore, while constructing the life table of the parasitoid, the effect of presence of male parasitoids, should be considered together with other factors, which decreases the efficiency of the parasitoid.  相似文献

In this study I examined the relationship among abundance ofreproductive resources, population density, and adult sex ratioin the strawberry dart-poison frog, Dendrobates pumilio, andhow these variables in turn influence the mating system, malereproductive success, and sexual selection. I studied the matingbehavior in two populations of D. pumilio living in a primaryand secondary rainforest on the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica.The abundance of tadpole-rearing sites (reproductive resourcesfor females) was approximately 10-fold higher in the secondary forest. Accordingly, the population density was higher and theadult sex ratio was strongly female biased in the secondaryforest, whereas the adult sex ratio was even in the primaryforest. The female-biased sex ratio was associated with a higherlevel of polygyny and higher male mating and reproductive successin the secondary forest. In contrast, the level of polyandrydid not differ between habitats. As expected, the opportunityfor sexual selection on male mating success was lower in thesecondary forest, the habitat with high female density. Inconclusion, my results suggest that ecological variables suchas resource availability have a great impact on the matingsystem and sexual selection through their effect on population structure. Moreover, the results of this study give furtherevidence that the opportunity for sexual selection is influencedby the adult sex ratio and hence by the operational sex ratioin a population.  相似文献

为了明确班氏跳小蜂不同生殖方式及雌蜂密度对种群的影响,研究了班氏跳小蜂在不同雌雄比例的两性生殖和孤雌生殖条件下以及不同雌蜂密度情况时,其寄生率及子代的雌性比例。结果表明:班氏跳小蜂可进行两性生殖和产雄孤雌生殖,不同雌雄比例的两性生殖及孤雌生殖的寄生率随着雌蜂数量的增加不断升高,雌雄比为20∶1时的寄生率最高,为49.13%;在两性生殖雌雄比为15∶1的情况下,其后代雌性最高;不同粉蚧密度条件下,2头雌蜂同时存在时,其寄生率和子代性比均最高。说明两性生殖(雌雄比为15∶1)和2头雌蜂同时存在条件下,更利于班氏跳小蜂种群发展。  相似文献

We analyze models of evolution of sex ratio conditional on habitat quality and with sex specific dispersal. Previous analysis concluded that the main constraint on sex ratio is habitat choice and leads to overproduction of the most dispersing sex in low quality habitat. Here, we analyze three models with finite local populations and show that constraints on sex ratio can balance constraints on habitat choice. In the first model, dispersal rates are fixed. In the second, sex specific dispersal can evolve independently of the habitat quality. These models suggests that sex ratio evolution can lead to higher global dispersal rates (mean of male and female dispersal rates) from high quality habitats. In the last model dispersal evolves conditionally with both sex and habitat. Our models suggests that conditions for overproduction of the most dispersing sex in high quality habitat are frequent. The predictions of the models with evolving dispersal contrast with patterns generally described in nature. We discuss possible reasons of this difference.  相似文献

Differences were observed in the total fecundity and patterns of reproduction of four morphs of Sitobion avenae (F.). The reproductive rates of apterous and alate exules declined gradually with time but decreased rapidly in gynoparae and oviparae. Under short daylengths apterous exules gave birth in three phases; the first consisting mainly of gynoparae, the second of males and the third of non-gynoparous viviparae. The strategic importance of the sequence of morphs and the reproductive behaviour of each is discussed in relation to the maximization of overwintering population size.

Résumé Des différences ont été observées entre les fécondités totales et les modes de reproduction de quatre types de Sitobion avenae. Les taux de reproduction diminuent graduellement dans le temps chez les aptères et ailés virginopares et rapidement chez les gynopares et ovipares. En photophases courtes, les virginopares aptères donnent naissance à trois types: le premier composé essentiellement de gynopares, le second de mâles et le troisième de vivipares. L'importance stratégique de la succession des types et du comportement reproducteur de chacun est discutée en relation avec l'accroissement maximum de la taille de la population hivernante.

Summary Five demographical factors influencing the sex ratio of a population are classically considered. The influence of two of them is dependent on the longevity of individuals in the population. The effect of differential age at maturity between males and females is higher for animals with low annual survival, whereas the effect of differential annual survival between males and females is higher for animals with high annual survival. Such a conclusion applied to turtles, which are long life-span animals, allows us to retain differential survival between sexes as a major factor influencing the population sex ratio.  相似文献

Abstract:  Against the background of conflicting reports of variable sex ratio distribution in different populations of the African rice gall midge (AfRGM), Orseolia oryzivora Harris and Gagne, the number and sex ratios of F1 adult progeny produced per female from wild and screen house populations were investigated in the screen house at 27 ± 3°C, 60–70% relative humidity and 12 : 12 h (light : dark) photoperiod. Results indicated the occurrence of a single sex-biased ratio in all the F1 adult progeny produced per female of this pest. Regardless of the source, whether from wild or screen house population, each mated female AfRGM produced a full complement of either sex only but never both. The difference between the number of eggs laid and F1 adult progeny that emerged per female from wild and screen house populations was not significant (P > 0.05), indicating consistency in the occurrence of this phenomenon among AfRGM populations. The reason for this could not be ascertained in this study but AfRGM eggs must be fertilized for development and eclosion to occur. No F2 adults emerged when a cohort of emergents from the same female were allowed to re-infest susceptible seedlings, indicating absence of parthenogenesis.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The calling behaviour of virgin oviparae of the potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) (Homoptera: Aphididae) was studied at three different constant temperatures under laboratory conditions. The mean age of calling for the first time decreased with a decrease in temperature from 2.9 days at 20 °C to 2.1 days at 10 °C. At all temperature regimes, the mean onset time of calling advanced from about 5 to 3 h after the onset of the photophase, and the mean time spent calling increased by > 4 h over the 8 days.
2. Cohorts of oviparae were also observed at two different periods in late summer–early autumn in the field, to examine the effects of fluctuating abiotic conditions (temperatures, wind velocity, rain) and age on calling behaviour. As under constant laboratory conditions, the mean age of calling for the first time declined with declining temperature, from 3.7 days in early September to 1.6 days at the end of September. Age-related changes in the mean onset time of calling and the mean time spent calling were much less evident under field conditions, due to the inhibitory effects of low temperatures, high winds, and rain on female calling activity.
3. The results are discussed within the context of reproductive success and address a previously proposed hypothesis suggesting that species-specific calling windows may serve as a reproductive isolating mechanism for sympatric aphid species.  相似文献

Summary. Programmed cell death occurs in plants during several developmental processes and during the expression of resistance to pathogen attack (i.e., the hypersensitive response). An unsolved question of plant programmed cell death is whether a unique signaling pathway or different, possibly convergent pathways exist. This problem was addressed in cultured sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) cells by comparing the effects of fusicoccin, Tunicamycin and Brefeldin A, inducers of programmed cell death with well-defined molecular and cellular targets, on some of the parameters involved in the regulation of this process. In addition to cell death, the inducers are able to stimulate the production of H2O2, the leakage of cytochrome c from mitochondria, the accumulation of cytosolic 14-3-3 proteins, and changes at the endoplasmic reticulum level, such as accumulation of the molecular chaperone binding protein and modifications in the organelle architecture. Interestingly, no additive effect on any of these parameters is observed when fusicoccin is administered in combination with Tunicamycin or Brefeldin A. In gynodioecious species, sex expression is generally determined through cytoplasmic male sterility genes interacting with nuclear restorers of the male function. With dominant restorers, there may be an excess of females in the progeny of self-fertilized compared with cross-fertilized hermaphrodites. Moreover, the effect of inbreeding on late stages of the life cycle remains poorly explored. Here, we used hermaphrodites of the gynodioecious Silene vulgaris originating from three populations located in different valleys in the Alps to investigate the effects of two generations of self- and cross-fertilization on sex ratio and gender variation. We detected an increase in females in the progeny of selfed compared with outcrossed hermaphrodites and inbreeding depression for female and male fertility. Male fertility correlated positively with sex ratio differences between outbred and inbred progeny, suggesting that dominant restorers are likely to influence male fertility qualitatively and quantitatively in S. vulgaris. We argue that the excess of females in the progeny of selfed compared with outcrossed hermaphrodites and inbreeding depression for gamete production may contribute to the maintenance of females in gynodioecious populations of S. vulgaris because purging of the genetic load is less likely to occur.  相似文献

We examined the age structure and sex ratio of a viperid snake,Trimeresurus flavoviridis, based on samples collected by hand by local inhabitants, habu hunters and by baited traps in the middle and south of Okinawa Island, Japan. Small individuals had a low possibility of capture in all the collecting methods. The age structure was estimated through summing up the age frequency in each snout-vent length (SVL) class in samples with a similar SVL structure. From the age structures, annual survival rates of adult females and males were estimated to be 0.7 and 0.8, respectively. In most samples the sex ratio was biased towards males, especially in March and August and in large individuals. However, the female proportion increased in June.  相似文献

Survival, growth and sex ratios of gynogenetic diploid honmoroko Gnathopogon caerulescens induced by blocking the release of the second polar body were examined. Mean survival of gynogenetic juveniles at 130 days after hatching was about 33% lower than that of the controls. No significant difference was seen in early growth between control and gynogenetic diploids. Standard length and body weight in six groups of gynogenetic progeny were significantly greater but in two groups were significantly smaller than in the controls. Although 69% of gynogenetic diploids had well-developed gonads, the remaining 30% had undeveloped gonads (small in size or thread-like), and those gonads were divided into four types. The mean proportion of females in the 10 gynogenetic groups was 87·2% which was significantly ( P <0·01) higher than in the controls (44·7%). Gynogenetic diploids included 3·0–35·3% males. Most of those males produced a high proportion of female progeny, but the proportion of male offspring varied widely. From these results, the sex determining mechanism in honmoroko was presumed to be female homogamety, but other factors resulted in the production of males.  相似文献

We studied the correlations between offspring sex ratio, UV coloration and overwinter survival in a population of blue tits, breeding in Gotland, Sweden, over three consecutive breeding seasons. In 2 of 3 years, we found that females paired to males with relatively brighter UV-coloration produced a greater proportion of sons in their broods, and that this effect was significant with all 3 years combined, despite a significant year by male UV interaction. In addition, we found other correlates of sex ratio (breeding time, female age and clutch size) in some, but not all years, and some of these showed significantly different relationships with sex ratio between years. In both years for which data were available, there were indications that males with relatively brighter UV coloration, and that paired with females that produced male-biased clutches, were more likely to survive to the next year. In addition, we also found that in both males and females, individuals produced similar sex ratios in consecutive years. Because correlations with the sex ratio may be expected to be weak, variation in results between years within the same population may be explained by low statistical power or genuine biological differences. Our results suggest that conclusions about sex ratio variation in birds should be based on multiple years. The correlations that we found in some years of this study are consistent with models of adaptive sex ratio adjustment in response to mate quality. However, careful experimental work is required to provide tests of the assumptions of these models, and should be a priority for future work.  相似文献

Abstract. Electroantennograms (EAGs) were recorded from adult male and asexual forms (winged and wingless virginoparae and gynoparae) of the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae , during stimulation with two sex pheromone components, (+)-(4a S ,7 S ,7a R )-nepetalactone and (-)-(1 R ,4a S ,7 S ,7a R )-nepetalactol, as well as six plant volatiles, i.e. ( E )-2-hexenal, ( E )-2-hexenol-1, ( Z )-3-hexenol-1, ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate, hexanal and allyl isothiocyanate. The male antennae are 1000-10,000 times more sensitive to nepetalactol and nepetalactone than to the plant compound ( E )-2-hexenal. Besides this marked difference of EAG peak responses in males, the EAG rise and decay are slower for the sex pheromone components. Males are also much more sensitive to the sex pheromone components than asexual females. This high sensitivity correlates with a predominance of antennal secondary rhinaria, the major sites of pheromone perception in the male. However, it is the primary rhinaria on the antennae of the wingless asexual females that are responsible for pheromone perception. Male antennae are as responsive as the asexual female antennae to the plant volatiles. The specialization of the male for mate location is discussed.  相似文献
