The feeding habits and selectivity of Macrobrachium borelliiwere studied by examining the stomach content of specimens from anox-bow lake across one year. M. borellii isomnivorous-carnivorous, feeding largely on members oflittoral-benthic communities. The bulk of the stomach content wasformed by oligochaetes, dipteran larvae, and a variety of organismsranging from algae to palaemonids. Copepods and cladocerans were analternative food source in winter, at low-water, when macrophytes haddeclined. Oligochaetes and dipteran larvae were positively, algae andmicrocrustaceans negatively selected. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Outbreak densities of autumnal moth, Epirrita autumnata (Borkhausen) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), lead to high larval crowding. Phenotypic responses of E. autumnata to larval crowding and to food quality were studied by measuring growth and consumption as well as pupal weight and fecundity. Crowding may trigger increased consumption and faster development to avoid impending food shortage on good quality food. This is suggested by the result that on a good‐quality diet, the growth of crowded larvae was better than that of solitary larvae, though they did not consume more food than solitary larvae. Crowded larvae also completed the last instar earlier than solitary larvae. The fecundity of crowded autumnal moths was not lower than the fecundity of solitarily grown autumnal moths. This may provide conditions for extra rapid population build‐up of E. autumnata. During the population increase phase the crowding effect may facilitate larval performance; however, at peak density the crowding starts to have negative effects on the performance of larvae. On a poor‐quality diet, the performance of crowded and solitary larvae did not differ. The growth of larvae was better on a good‐quality diet than on a poor‐quality diet, due to higher efficiency in food utilization. Larvae feeding on low‐quality diet did not prolong their development time, but pupated at smaller size; this resulted in lower fecundity. A decrease in food quality can be seen as a cue of oncoming food shortage and resource depletion; it may be advantageous to pupate at a smaller size and ensure survival till reproduction, rather than risk prolonging development to achieve larger size and higher fecundity.  相似文献

Muscular tension and sensory activity in the flexor apodeme sensory nerve were recorded during stimulation of single motor afferents innervating the M‐C flexor. Muscular tension and unitary sensory activity both varied, depending upon the motor fiber stimulated. Differences in the abililty of individual motor fibers to elicit sensory activity were only partially accounted for by differences in tension development. Some tension afferent units were more readily excited by a muscular contraction elicited by one motor axon than they were by another, even when the tension elicited by the more effective motor fiber was less than that evoked by the less effective efferent.  相似文献

Summary A mechanosensitive ciliated cell type of the polyp Stauridiosarsia producta (Hydrozoa) was investigated by means of electron microscopy. These cells bear at their apical cell surface a modified cilium, a set of seven stereovilli, a so-called pseudovillar system and a large vacuole. Cilium and stereovilli are interconnected like the cnidocil apparatus of hydrozoan nematocytes which is responsible for mechanoelectric transduction. The vacuole is enclosed by and linked to the pseudovillar system by a microtubular basket. Considering its structural organization and physiological activities the ciliated sensory cell closely resembles a nematocyte that has lost its ability ot produce a nematocyst.  相似文献

Spiders show a wide range of sensory capabilities as evidenced by behavioural observations. Accordingly, spiders possess diverse sensory structures like mechano-, hygro-, thermo- or chemoreceptive sensilla. As to chemoreceptive structures, only trichoid tip-pore sensilla were found so far that were tested for gustation. That spiders are also able to receive airborne signals is corroborated by numerous behavioural experiments but the responsible structures have not been determined yet. Here, we provide sensilla distribution maps of pedipalps and walking legs of both sexes of the wasp spider Argiope bruennichi whose biology and mating system is well explored. By means of scanning electron microscopy, we scrutinized whether there is in fact only one type of trichoid pore sensillum and if so, if there are deviations in the outer structure of the tip-pore sensilla depending on their position on the body. We also describe the external structure and distribution of slit sense organs, trichobothria and tarsal organs. Our study shows that all four sensillum types occur on pedipalps and walking legs of both sexes. As to chemosensory organs, only tip-pore sensilla were found, suggesting that this sensillum type is used for both gustation and olfaction. The highest numbers of tip-pore sensilla were observed on metatarsi and tarsi of the first two walking legs. Mechanosensitive slit sense organs occur as single slit sensilla in rows along all podomers or as lyriform organs next to the joints. The mechanosensitive trichobothria occur on the basal part of tibiae and metatarsi. Tarsal organs occur on the dorsal side of all tarsi and the male cymbium. The distribution maps of the sensilla are the starting point for further exploration of internal, morphological differences of the sensilla from different regions on the body. Cryptic anatomical differences might be linked to functional differences that can be explored in combination with electrophysiological analyses. Consequently, the maps will help to elucidate the sensory world of spiders.  相似文献

The freshwater crayfishes are distributed across all but the Indian and Antarctic continents with centers of diversity in the southeastern Appalachian Mountains in the Northern Hemisphere and in south–east Australia in the Southern Hemisphere. There are currently over 640 described species of freshwater crayfishes with an average of 5–10 species still being described each year. Freshwater crayfishes can serve as keystone species in aquatic habitats, but a few species are also significantly invasive and can cause impressive damage to the fragile freshwater habitat. Crayfishes inhabit caves, burrows, streams, lakes and strong burrowers can even be found in terrestrial habitats where they have burrowed to the water table or where rainfall is sufficiently abundant to provide the needed moisture. The freshwater crayfishes, like the habitats in which they are encountered, are generally endangered to some degree and conservation efforts would do well to focus on them as key elements of the freshwater ecosystem. We investigated modulation by ATP, Mg2+, Na+, K+ and NH4 + and inhibition by ouabain of (Na+,K+)-ATPase activity in microsomal homogenates of whole zoeae I and decapodid III (formerly zoea IX) and whole-body and gill homogenates of juvenile and adult Amazon River shrimps, Macrobrachium amazonicum. (Na+,K+)-ATPase-specific activity was increased twofold in decapodid III compared to zoea I, juveniles and adults, suggesting an important role in this ontogenetic stage. The apparent affinity for ATP (K M = 0.09 ± 0.01 mmol L−1) of the decapodid III (Na+,K+)-ATPase, about twofold greater than the other stages, further highlights this relevance. Modulation of (Na+,K+)-ATPase activity by K+ also revealed a threefold greater affinity for K+ (K 0.5 = 0.91 ± 0.04 mmol L−1) in decapodid III than in other stages; NH4 + had no modulatory effect. The affinity for Na+ (K 0.5 = 13.2 ± 0.6 mmol L−1) of zoea I (Na+,K+)-ATPase was fourfold less than other stages. Modulation by Na+, Mg2+ and NH4 + obeyed cooperative kinetics, while K+ modulation exhibited Michaelis-Menten behavior. Rates of maximal Mg2+ stimulation of ouabain-insensitive ATPase activity differed in each ontogenetic stage, suggesting that Mg2+-stimulated ATPases other than (Na+,K+)-ATPase are present. Ouabain inhibition suggests that, among the various ATPase activities present in the different stages, Na+-ATPase may be involved in the ontogeny of osmoregulation in larval M. amazonicum. The NH4 +-stimulated, ouabain-insensitive ATPase activity seen in zoea I and decapodid III may reflect a stage-specific means of ammonia excretion since functional gills are absent in the early larval stages.  相似文献

Most analyses dealing with the geographical distribution of the chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) have been performed on large geographical scales and data on more localized distribution of the chytrid within catchments are scarce. In this study, we compare the prevalence and intensity of infection of chytrid within and outside rainforest habitats at five independent catchments in southeast Queensland. In each catchment, we sampled adult Litoria wilcoxii along two transects on the same stream: one in forested areas, and the other in open nearby farmland. We analyzed swabs using quantitative PCR techniques. Male frogs were in higher densities in open habitats compared with the nearby forested areas. Infected male frogs were found in all catchments surveyed; however, prevalence of B. dendrobatidis in adult males was higher in the forested habitats than in the open habitats in four of the catchments. There was no significant difference in intensity of infection between forested and open habitats. For adult females and juveniles, sample sizes were not high enough for comparisons. Our results suggest that habitat influences chytrid prevalence and open areas may provide refuge from chytrid-induced population declines.  相似文献

The sensory pits of the nymphs of the planthopper Issus coleoptratus were investigated using light and electron microscopic techniques. Sensory pits consist of a bowl-shaped depression in the cuticle (25–70 μm in diameter) covered by a transparent cupola of presumably waxy material. Each pit is equipped with a long sensory hair that emerges from the inner wall of the pit and extends horizontally for about two thirds of the pit diameter. The cupola emerges from the rim of the pit opposite to the socket of this hair. Additional small sensory hairs extend into the base of the cupola. While the ultrastructure of these small hairs resembles that of other mechanoreceptive sensory hairs of insects, that of the long hairs shows several peculiarities. Sensory pits are dispersed over the frontal part of the head, the tergites of thoracic and abdominal segments. On the different parts of the exoskeleton, the orientation of long hairs within the pits varies in a systematic fashion with respect to the body axes. Size, location, and orientation of the pits show almost perfect bilateral symmetry. Their number increases with each moult. Comparative data show that the level of structural complexity of these sense organs varies considerably within this group of insects.  相似文献

The serpulid Hydroides elegans is recognized as an invasive species in many harbour areas of the world, growing mainly on man-made structures such as pier pilings, where native diversity is low. In addition, because they build large aggregations of calcareous tubes, this increases the maintenance and fuel costs of vessels. While H. elegans is well known for the North Atlantic, Europe, Caribbean and Pacific Ocean, detailed information of the species for the South Atlantic is missing. In the last decade, owners of boats moored at the Clube Naval Charitas (CNC), in the Guanabara Bay, southeastern Brazil noticed an increase in the occurrence of an encrusting organism that we identified as H. elegans. In this study we characterize H. elegans specimens from CNC and Itaguaí Harbor, both in southeastern Brazil, and discuss its distribution in the world. In addition, we deployed PVC panels at two different depths to quantify how H. elegans affects community assembling over two months. We observed that H. elegans could dominate hard substrata in the intertidal zone, occupying more than 50% of the available substrata. Considering the damage caused by H. elegans elsewhere and the ability of the species to monopolize space in the intertidal zone demonstrated here, accurate taxonomic information is essential for future monitoring and management of the species in Brazil and the South Atlantic.  相似文献

Tanaidaceans are small peracarid crustaceans which occur in all marine habitats, over the full range of depths, and rarely into fresh waters. Yet they have no obligate dispersive phase in their life-cycle. Populations are thus inevitably isolated, and allopatric speciation and high regional diversity are inevitable; cosmopolitan distributions are considered to be unlikely or non-existent. Options for passive dispersion are discussed. Tanaidaceans appear to have first evolved in shallow waters, the region of greatest diversification of the Apseudomorpha and some tanaidomorph families, while in deeper waters the apseudomorphs have subsequently evolved two or three distinct phyletic lines. The Neotanaidomorpha has evolved separately and diversified globally in deep waters, and the Tanaidomorpha has undergone the greatest evolution, diversification and adaptation, to the point where some of the deep-water taxa are recolonizing shallow waters. Analysis of their geographic distribution shows some level of regional isolation, but suffers from inclusion of polyphyletic taxa and a general lack of data, particularly for deep waters. It is concluded that the diversity of the tanaidomorphs in deeper waters and in certain ocean regions remains to be discovered; that the smaller taxa are largely understudied; and that numerous cryptic species remain to be distinguished. Thus the number of species currently recognized is likely to be an order of magnitude too low, and globally the Tanaidacea potentially rival the Amphipoda and Isopoda in diversity.  相似文献

To better understand ecological traits of organisms, one can study them from two, not necessarily mutually exclusive perspectives: how the traits evolved, and their current adaptive utility. In birds, foraging behavior and associated morphological traits generally are explained by a combination of adaptive and phylogenetic predictors. The avian skeleton and more specifically, the skeletal flight apparatus is under well‐known functional and phylogenetic constraints. This is an interesting area to partition the relative contributions of adaptive correlated evolution and phylogenetic constraint to species clustering in morphological space. A prediction of convergent evolution is that nonphylogenetic morphological clustering is a characteristic of ecological similarity. We tested this using representatives of North American birds from two clades, one with a mixture of foraging modes (Turdid thrushes, solitaires, and bluebirds) and one with more canalized foraging behaviors (Tyrannid flycatchers). Nine characters on the skeletal flight apparatus from 19 species were used to characterize the morphological space and test for ecomorphological clustering. When body size and phylogeny are considered, the three bluebird species and Townsend's solitaire cluster with the ecologically similar flycatchers rather than with their phylogenetic close relatives. Furthermore, sit‐and‐wait foragers tend to exhibit relatively long distal elements and a long keel while active ground foragers have deeper keels and a longer humerus. Distal elements, expected to be relatively shorter and more bowed in the flycatchers and bluebirds, were actually longer and narrower. A reduction of distal element mass may be more important for facilitating maneuverability than surface area for insertion of wing‐rotational musculature. J. • 1.1. The distribution of different phospholipids and the repartition of fatty acids extracted from hemolymph of crab Carcinus maenas are analysed.
  • 2.2. The action of the temperature on the lipid composition is also determined: an increase of content of PE and a slight rise of the degree of unsaturation of fatty acids are found at lower temperatures.
  • 3.3. The specific radioactivity of total phospholipids, phosphatidyl-choline and phosphatidylethanolamine from hemolymph of Carcinus maenas is studied from two radioactive precursors (32Phosphorus and 3H]ethanolamine). Results suggested that the conversion of PE into PC by methylation could take place in hepatopancreas of Carcinus maenas.
  • 4.4. The specific radioactivity of phospholipids from these two same radioactive compounds is increased following a variation in the environmental temperature.
  • 5.5. The composition of hemolymph lipids could be a direct reflection of the lipid metabolism of the hepatopancreas and that the temperature alters the rate of the phospholipid exchange between hepatopancreas and hemolymph.
  • 6.6. It is suggested that these lipid alterations occur in order to permit crab Carcinus maenas to support large changes in environmental temperatures.

Natural animal populations are increasingly exposed to human impacts on the environment, which could have consequences for their behaviour. Among these impacts is exposure to anthropogenic contaminants. Any environmental variable that influences internal state could impact behaviour across a number of levels: at the sample mean, at the level of among-individual differences in behaviour (‘animal personality’) and at the level of within-individual variation in behaviour (intra-individual variation, ‘IIV’). Here we examined the effect of exposure to seawater-borne copper on the startle response behaviour of European hermit crabs, Pagurus bernhardus across these levels. Copper exposure rapidly led to longer startle responses on average, but did not lead to any change in repeatability indicating that individual differences were present and equally consistent in the presence and absence of copper. There was no strong evidence that copper exposure led to changes in IIV. Our data show that exposure to copper for 1 week produces sample mean level changes in the behaviour of hermit crabs. However, there is no evidence that this exposure led to changes in repeatability through feedback loops.  相似文献
