Newly hatched chicks spontaneously peck at conspicuous objects, and soon learn to discriminate between edible food particles and inedible objects. To examine whether this discrimination is based on a chick's ability to memorize objects by shape cues, we analyzed the pecking behavior. One- to 3-day old quail chicks (Coturnix japonica) were presented with dry objects of different shapes (ball, disk, triangle and T-shape) of similar size (4 mm) and color (green). Habituation occurred after repeated presentation of any one of these objects (duration: 30 sec; interval: 4 min). When chicks showed significantly more pecks at a novel object (dishabituation), we assumed that chicks had memorized the habituated shapes and distinguished the novel object. Chicks did not show dishabituation between a ball and a disk. On the other hand, chicks discriminated a triangle or T-shape from the memorized image of disk, but did not memorize either triangle or T-shape by its shape. Similarly, chicks did not memorize the size of disks as a reference for subsequent pecking behavior. Chicks proved to have a limited ability to memorize shape and size cues for selective pecking behavior, in strong contrast to their accurate memorization of colors.  相似文献

Questions concerning the role of nature and nurture in higher cognition appear to be intractable if one restricts one's attention to development in humans. However, in other domains, such as sensory development, much information has been gained from controlled rearing studies with animals. Here, we used a similar experimental strategy to investigate intuitive reasoning about occluded objects. Newborn domestic chicks (Gallus gallus) were reared singly with a small object that became their social partner. They were then accustomed to rejoin such an imprinting object when it was made to move and disappear behind either one of two identical opaque screens. After disappearance of the imprinting object, chicks were faced with two screens of different slants, or of different height or different width, which may or may not have been compatible with the presence of the imprinting object hidden beneath/behind them. Chicks consistently chose the screen of slant/height/width compatible with the presence of the object beneath/behind it. Preventing chicks from touching and pecking at the imprinting object before testing did not affect the results, suggesting that intuitive reasoning about physical objects is largely independent of specific experience of interaction with objects and of objects' occluding events.  相似文献

To examine whether the selective pecking is based on the ability to memorize shapes, we analyzed pecking behavior of 1- to 2-days-old quail chicks (Coturnix japonica) by using ball- and triangle-shaped beads both painted in green. Repeated presentation of dry bead (either ball or triangle) resulted in a progressively fewer number of pecks (habituation). When chicks were tested by triangle after repeated presentation of ball, chicks showed a significant increase in the number of pecks at the triangle (dishabituation). On the other hand, when tested by ball after a series of triangle presentations, pecking frequency did not increase (no dishabituation). Chicks thus distinguished the triangle as a novel object after being habituated to ball, but did not respond to the ball after triangle. A similar asymmetry was found in one-trial passive avoidance task. Chicks were pre-trained by water-coated (neutral) triangle and then trained by methylanthranilate-coated (aversive) ball. In this case, most chicks learned to avoid the ball, and half of these successful learners pecked at the triangle; they distinguished triangle from ball. When chicks were pre-trained by neutral ball and trained by aversive triangle, on the other hand, most chicks did not distinguish the ball from triangle, and showed a generalized avoidance for both beads. Chicks may be innately predisposed to memorize a limited category of shapes such as ball, and associate them with selective avoidance.  相似文献

The process(es) by which parenteral iron effects the accumulation of hepatic metallothionein (MT) is not known. The present study examined glucocorticoids as potential mediators of this process. Chicks were given either one injection (ip) of iron (+1FE) at 10 mg Fe/kg, two injections of iron (+2FE) given 24 hr apart, or a single injection of saline. Plasma corticosterone was evaluated at various times following the last injection. Plasma corticosterone increased approximately 50% following +1FE but more than 200% at 2 and 4 hr following a second injection of iron (+2FE). Plasma zinc showed a transient increase followed by a considerable depression. Coincidentally, the accumulation (determined at 24 hr) of zinc MT in liver of +2FE chicks was three times higher than that of +1FE chicks. In another experiment, markedly greater changes, at similar time intervals, in plasma corticosterone were effected by multiple subcutaneous injections of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) (either 5 IU ACTH or 20 IU ACTH/kg). Subsequent analysis of hepatic zinc MT showed only minor changes as a result of ACTH injections. These results indicate that a change in the plasma glucocorticoid corticosterone is not a primary component in the process(es) by which parenteral iron effects an increase in hepatic zinc MT.  相似文献

Chicks were trained to discriminate between two identical boxes on the basis of their position. Subsequently, the colour of parts of the positive (reinforced) box was changed and chicks were retrained. Results showed that chicks were more or less impaired during retraining depending on the spatial distribution of the changed stimuli. Chicks behaved as if a figure (a disc or a spot of dots) painted on a box was irrelevant to them, whereas they did respond to changes in the colour of a uniformly coloured box or of scattered dots painted on a box. Similar results were obtained in simultaneous discrimination learning tasks involving addition of cues (e.g. colour plus position). Addition of cues facilitated learning using boxes the same colour all over or with painted scattered dots, but not using boxes with a disc or a spot of dots. Furthermore, addition of shape and position information had different outcomes depending on the use of three-dimensional objects or of painted figures: learning facilitation occurred only using three-dimensional objects. Results are interpreted in terms of an “object hypothesis”, and the validity and usefulness of traditional terms such as cues is questioned.  相似文献

Abstract We used an anti-inflammatory dose of dexamethasone (DEX) and Salmonella enteritidis (SE)-immune lymphokines (ILK) followed by oral SE challenge to chicks to determine the effects of these treatments on SE organ invasion and in vitro function of PMNs derived from peripheral blood. Endpoints included percent protection against SE organ invasion, numbers of peripheral blood PMNs, and in vitro PMN adherence, chemotaxis, and SE killing. SE organ invasion was significantly reduced in chicks treated with either ILK alone or DEX + ILK compared to controls. Chicks treated with either DEX alone or DEX + ILK responded with a significant increase in numbers of peripheral blood PMNs as compared to controls, while numbers of PMNs in the peripheral blood from chicks treated with ILK alone were not significantly increased. PMN adherence and percent SE killing by PMNs derived from chicks treated with either ILK alone or DEX + ILK were significantly increased compared to controls. Chemotaxis of PMNs derived from chicks treated with either ILK alone or DEX alone significantly increased 2-fold over control levels. Interestingly, chemotaxis of PMNs derived from chicks that received DEX + ILK was similar to controls. Generally, ILK abated the anti-inflammatory effects of DEX on PMNs in these assays, except for chemotaxis. We interpret these data to suggest that ILK may confer protection to chicks against the early phase of SE organ invasion by inducing an inflammatory response predominated by activated PMNs.  相似文献

Our study investigated relationships between a precocial bird’s fearfulness and maternal care, and the implication of maternal care as a vector for non-genomic transmission of fearfulness to chicks. We compared care given to chicks between two sets of female Japanese quail selected to present either high (LTI) or low fearfulness (STI). Chicks, from a broiler line, were adopted by these females following a sensitization procedure. Chicks’ fearfulness after separation from their mother was assessed by well-established procedures. LTIs took longer to present maternal responses, pecked chicks more during the first days post-hatch, presented impaired maternal vocal behaviour and were globally less active than STI females. Chicks mothered by LTIs presented more fearful reactions than did chicks mothered by STIs, supporting the hypothesis of a non-genetic maternal transmission of fearfulness. We suggest that the longer latencies required by LTIs to become maternal are a consequence of their greater fear of chicks, and that their lower general and vocal activity could be components of a heightened antipredatory strategy. We discuss the transmission of maternal fearfulness to fostered chicks, taking into account the possible implication of several well-known mechanisms underlying maternal effects.  相似文献

Chicks were trained to discriminate (1) between two boxes of the same colour on the basis of their positions; (2) between two boxes of different colours on the basis of their positions or on the basis of their colours. No significant differences between these tasks appeared. Addition of colour and position improved learning when the boxes were entirely coloured but not when differently coloured discs were placed over the lids of two identical boxes. It is argued that in simultaneous discrimination learning chicks rely primarily on the “relative” position of the goal objects (i. e. in relation to each other) and utilize featural information (colour) to segregate the goal objects as distinct perceptual units. Results also stressed the role of “object characteristics” as opposed to the traditional notion of “cues”.  相似文献

Chicks of 6 days of age were repeatedly presented with a mealworm which disappeared behind one of two screens. They all learned rapidly to look for the worm behind either screen; at a later stage of the training procedure a minority of birds spontaneously restricted their search to the correct side. By providing different types of prior experience it was possible to influence the nondirectional and the directional aspect of the chicks' searching behaviour selectively. The results are discussed with regard to the problem of object permanence, a concept which so far has been mainly studied in child psychology, but which can also be investigated on the level of animal behaviour.  相似文献

Chicks, Gallus gallus domesticus, tested monocularly on day 3 after hatching recognize familiar versus unfamiliar conspecifics and choose to approach one or other when they use the left eye, whereas they approach familiar and unfamiliar chicks at random when they use the right eye. In experiment 1 we investigated the effects of light exposure of embryos prior to hatching on this particular form of lateralization. Irrespective of whether they hatched from eggs incubated in the dark or from eggs exposed to light during the final days of incubation, chicks using the left eye had higher choice scores (meaning they chose to approach either a familiar or an unfamiliar chick) than chicks using the right eye or both eyes. Therefore, light experience prior to hatching did not influence the lateralization of individual recognition or choice behaviour, although it did affect latency to move out of, and time spent in, the centre of the runway. Experiment 2 showed that visual/social experience posthatching influences choice behaviour: chicks housed in a group in the light for 12 h on day 1 posthatching made a clear choice between familiar and unfamiliar chicks when tested on day 3, but chicks kept in a group in the dark on day 1 did not make a choice, instead alternating between the two stimuli. In experiment 3 we found that posthatching visual/social experience increased the choice scores of chicks using the right eye and thereby removed any lateralization of choice behaviour. The results suggest that visual experience of a social group is required before chicks using their right eye (and left hemisphere) will pay attention to the cues that distinguish one chick from another. Chicks using their left eye (and right hemisphere) recognize the difference between individuals without requiring visual experience with other chicks. Chicks were observed during exposure to red and to blue cylinders. Although chicks apparently become imprinted with both stimuli regardless of their temporal characteristics there were differences in their responses to the two stimuli which depended on the way they were presented. When the two objects appeared in rapid alternation the chicks behaved similarly in the presence of both stimuli, and any differences tended to disappear as exposure progressed. When the two stimuli appeared in separate 1/2-hr blocks there were changes of behaviour at the changeover from one object to the other. The behaviour of chicks during the different sorts of stimulus presentation can be related to their performance on a subsequent discrimination involving the same two stimuli.  相似文献

Provisioning regimes and growth of Light-mantled Sooty Albatrosses (LMSA) (Phoebetria palpebrata) were investigated on subantarctic Macquarie Island using an automatic tracking system and automatic weighing nests. The nests were deployed under five chicks in the post-brood provisioning period in 2000 and 2001. Adults typically utilised a cyclical foraging strategy consisting of a long foraging trip followed by three to four shorter trips. Chicks received an average (±SE) of 37.5±2.3 kg of food in the post-brood provisioning period and were fed every 1.6±0.1 days with a mean meal size of 520±10 g. Chicks grew at a rate of 61.3±1.0 g day-1 to a peak mass of 4.4±0.1 kg. Mean chick fledging mass was 3.0±0.1 kg. LMSA on Macquarie Island fed their chicks more frequently and showed a lower mean trip duration than conspecifics at South Georgia, which is likely related to proximity of productive Antarctic shelf waters, differences in prey availability and competition with other Procellariiformes.  相似文献

Breeding populations of the common loon (Gavia immer) in Michigan have declined in the past several decades, resulting in classification of this species as threatened under state law. Factors responsible for the decline are unknown, but may include toxic contaminants, mortality in commercial fish nets, and human disturbance of breeding sites. To assess the latter possibility, 960 hours of observation were devoted to observing human-loon interactions on two sets of lakes, one with restricted human use (minimal or no shoreline development and open to canoe use only), and another with unrestricted use (varying amounts of shoreline development and motorboat traffic). Six mated pairs of loons on six restricted use (r-u) lakes were compared to eight loon pairs on seven open-use (o-u) lakes. The number of nests that hatched young per nest started was not significantly different between the two sets of lakes (7 of 13 (0.62) on r-u lakes vs 8 of 17 (0.47) on o-u lakes), despite significantly more human activity on o-u lakes. Chicks hatched per pair of loons were likewise not significantly different (1.1 vs 1.2 on r-u and o-u lakes, respectively). Fledging success was significantly lower on r-u lakes (7 chicks fledged of 11 hatched) than on o-u lakes (13 fledged of 13 hatched). Human activity on o-u lakes was 2–3 times that on r-u lakes during chick rearing, but time spent by adult loons tending and feeding chicks was not significantly different between the two types of lakes. The larger size of most o-u lakes may have allowed loons a greater opportunity to avoid human disturbance. Higher levels of human activity did not affect production of chicks by loons under the conditions observed, but these results should not be extrapolated to lakes experiencing much higher human use.  相似文献

The macroscopic, three-dimensional surface layout geometry of an enclosure apparently provides a different contribution for spatial reorientation than the geometric cues associated with freestanding objects arranged in arrays with similar geometric shape. Here, we showed that a unitary spatial representation can account for the capability of animals to reorient both by extended surfaces and discrete objects in a small-scale spatial task. We trained domestic chicks to locate a food-reward from an opening on isolated cylinders arranged either in a geometrically uninformative (square-shaped) or informative (rectangular-shaped) arrays. The arrays were located centrally within a rectangular-shaped enclosure. Chicks trained to access the reward from a fixed position of openings proved able to reorient according to the geometric cues specified by the shape of the enclosure in all conditions. Chicks trained in a fixed position of opening with geometric cues provided both by the arena and the array proved able to reorient according to each shape separately. However, chicks trained to access the reward from a variable position of openings failed to reorient. The results suggest that the physical constrains associated with the presence of obstacles in a scene, rather than their apparent visual extension, are crucial for spatial reorientation.  相似文献

Bacteria divert resources from growth for magellanic penguin chicks   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The influence of bacteria on the growth of their wild avian hosts is unknown. We tested experimentally whether administration of a wide‐spectrum antibiotic (cephalosporine) during early development of magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) chicks had any effect on their growth rates in the wild. Chicks that were injected in two occasions with cephalosporine grew faster than control untreated chicks. The positive effect of medication on nestling growth disappeared after the treatment ceased, did not alter haematological indices indicative of health status, had no influence on chick survival until near independence and was related to a changed bacterial composition of the faecal microbiota of treated chicks when compared with that from control chicks. These results were similar to those obtained for poultry with antimicrobials promoting growth and chick nutrient assimilation rates. Gram‐positive bacilli in the diphtheroid genus Corynebacterium are likely candidates to cause decreased growth rates in magellanic penguin chicks.  相似文献

Eight experiments were conducted to determine effects of a phenolic polymer (Kraft wood lignin, Indulin), phenolic glycosides (cane molasses and wood molasses), and phenolic monomers (vanillin, vanillic acid, ferulic acid, and p-coumaric acid) on liver cytochromes P-450, cytochrome b5, and NADPH cytochrome c reductase in chicks and rats. Chicks fed 6.0% lignin had a higher (P less than 0.01) cytochromes P-450 content than did chicks fed 0% fiber, 6.0% wood cellulose (Solka Floc), or 6.0% arenaceous flour. NADPH cytochrome c reductase activity was not affected by treatment. Chicks fed 12.0% wood molasses had a higher (P less than 0.06) cytochromes P-450 level than did chicks fed 0% fiber or 6.0% wood molasses. Cane molasses incorporated at both 6.0 and 12.0% of the diet induced (P less than 0.05) cytochromes P-450 content over those of control-fed birds. Chicks fed 6.0% lignin, with or without antibiotic (bacitracin:neomycin sulfate, 2:1), had a higher (P less than 0.01) cytochromes P-450 level than did chicks fed control diets, with or without antibiotic. Additionally, chicks fed 6.0% lignin had lower (P less than 0.01) intestinal diaminopimelic acid (DAP) levels than did chicks fed 0% fiber. Rats fed 0% fiber, 6.0% wood cellulose, 6.0% arenaceous flour, or 6.0% lignin exhibited no difference in cytochrome level or activity among treatments. Chicks fed 0.5% vanillin, 0.5% vanillic acid, 0.5% ferulic acid, or 0.5% p-coumaric acid had comparable cytochromes level and activity compared with chicks fed no phenolics. Chicks fed 0.5% p-coumaric acid had lower (P less than 0.05) rates of gain than did chicks fed control or other phenolic-containing diets. Rats fed these phenolics had similar cytochromes P-450 content among treatments.  相似文献

Aviary systems for laying hens offer several advantages over battery cages. However, pecking the feathers of conspecifics remains a serious problem that negatively affects the welfare of the birds as well as the economy of a farm. From experimental studies with small groups, it has been shown that feather pecking and foraging behaviour are related and that both behaviour are influenced by early access to litter substrate. We, therefore, hypothesised, that feather pecking in aviaries can be reduced with an adequate management in the first 2 weeks of life.Each of seven pens on six commercial poultry farms, was divided into two identical compartments (matched pair design). In one of the compartments (experimental compartment) chicks were reared for the first 2 weeks of life with access to litter (wood shavings, in one case with additional straw), while the chicks in the other compartment (control) were kept on a plastic grid. Thereafter, all chicks had unrestricted access to litter and there were no differences between the two compartments neither in housing conditions nor in management procedures.Chicks in the experimental compartments spent significantly more time foraging (week 5), showed significantly less feather pecking (weeks 5 and 14) and significantly fewer birds had damaged tail feathers (weeks 5 and 14).The study demonstrates that in aviaries, under commercial conditions, early access to litter substrate has a significant effect on the development of feather pecking. In order to reduce feather pecking and to increase foraging behaviour, it is recommended that laying hen chicks raised in aviary systems do get access to litter from day 1 on.  相似文献

Spatial reorientation by layout geometry occurs in numerous species, but its underlying mechanisms are debated. While some argue that navigating animals' sense of place is based on geometric computations over three-dimensional representations, others claim it depends on panoramic image-matching processes. Because children reorient by subtle three-dimensional perturbations of the terrain and not by salient two-dimensional brightness contours on surfaces or freestanding columns, children's sense of place cannot be explained by image matching. To test image-matching theories in a different species, the present experiment investigates the reorientation performance of domestic chicks (Gallus gallus) in environments similar to those used with children. Chicks, like children, spontaneously reoriented by geometric relationships of subtle three-dimensional terrains, and not by salient two-dimensional brightness contours on surfaces or columns. These findings add to the evidence for homologous navigation systems in humans and other vertebrates, and they cast doubt on image-matching theories of reorientation in these species.  相似文献

Because immune function competes for the resources that can be allocated to other activities, studies of immunological ecology may offer a powerful tool for explaining how reproductive effort links to reproductive costs and how conditions experienced early in their development affect growing chicks in later life. We studied the distribution of leucocyte types and the development of H/L ratio, which is indicative of heightened energetic stress, throughout the season 2004-2005 in chicks and adults of thin-billed prions Pachyptila belcheri. Adults decreased body condition throughout the season and increased H/L ratios. Likewise, chicks increased H/L ratios during the season, but this was age-related rather than condition-dependent. Chicks from earlier hatched eggs had lower H/L ratios initially, but this relationship became weaker with increasing age and had disappeared by fledging. The results suggest that the stress index may be a useful measure of condition in adult thin-billed prions, at least on a population level, although a larger sample size or repeated samples from the same individuals may be required to confirm the relationship on an individual level and to distinguish between seasonal and body condition effects. The data on chicks highlight our lack of knowledge of the ontogeny of immune function in wild birds. Studies of adults and chicks over several seasons may reveal how resources are allocated between immune and other functions under contrasting environmental conditions.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to investigate the influence of dietary polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratio (P/S) on growth performance and heat production (HP) of chicks under different ambient temperature (Ta). With the exception of Ta, all other treatment processes for two trials were the same. In each trial, 120 Arbor Acres 1-day-old male chicks were allotted to 2 (P/S, 0.6 or 2.4) × 2 (high or low Ta) factorial design with six replicates of five chicks each treatment. Chicks were reared in wire-floored metabolism cages in two temperature-controlled chambers, and were exposed to high Ta (37 and 38 °C at the first day for trial 1 and 2, respectively, and decreased 0.2 °C/day) or low Ta (33 and 28 °C at the first day for trial 1 and 2, respectively, and decreased 0.3 °C/day), for 3 weeks. Chicks were fed ad libitum. Body weight, feed intake and gain:feed were recorded. Excreta were collected for determining metabolizable energy. Energy retention was measured by the comparative slaughter technique; HP was calculated as the difference between metabolizable energy intake and body energy retention.

The results showed that high Ta decreased weight gain (P < 0.01) and feed intake (P < 0.01) in both trials, improved gain:feed in trial 2 (P < 0.01), and decreased HP in trial 2 (P < 0.01) of chicks during 0–3 weeks of age. Increasing dietary P/S did not affect the growth performance and HP of chicks during 0–3 weeks of age. No Ta × dietary P/S interaction among growth performance and HP in chicks was observed.

In summary, increasing dietary P/S did not affect HP, therefore, it is neither detrimental to the growth of chicks reared under high Ta nor is beneficial to the growth of chicks reared under low Ta.  相似文献
