The influence of bacterial communities on the formation of carbonate deposits such as moonmilk was investigated in Altamira Cave (Spain). The study focuses on the relationship between the bacterial communities at moonmilk deposits and those forming white colonizations, which develop sporadically throughout the cave. Using molecular fingerprinting of the metabolically active bacterial communities detected through RNA analyses, the development of white colonizations and moonmilk deposits showed similar bacterial profiles. White colonizations were able to raise the pH as a result of their metabolism (reaching in situ pH values above 8.5), which was proportional to the nutrient supply. Bacterial activity was analyzed by nanorespirometry showing higher metabolic activity from bacterial colonizations than uncolonized areas. Once carbonate deposits were formed, bacterial activity decreased drastically (down to 5.7% of the white colonization activity). This study reports on a specific type of bacterial community leading to moonmilk deposit formation in a cave environment as a result of bacterial metabolism. The consequence of this process is a macroscopic phenomenon of visible carbonate depositions and accumulation in cave environments.  相似文献

Physiological indicators of nitrogen and phosphorus deficiency were used to determine the role of these nutrients in the development and proliferation of Cladophora in the Manawatu River, New Zealand. Nitrogen indicator tests showed that surplus nitrogen was available at all times. During a sustained low flow period when the dissolved reactive phosphorus was between 4–5 mg m–3, phosphorus indicator tests revealed that the Cladophora proliferations were phosphorus deficient. A downstream trend of reduced nitrogen and phosphorus availability was also observed during this period. Sudden high river flows were frequent and had a major influence on the Cladophora biomass.  相似文献

Symbiotic associations can be disrupted by disturbance or by changing environmental conditions. Endophytes are fungal and bacterial symbionts of plants that can affect performance. As in more widely known symbioses, acute or chronic stressor exposure might trigger disassociation of endophytes from host plants. We tested this hypothesis by examining the effects of oil exposure following the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill on endophyte diversity and abundance in Spartina alterniflora – the foundational plant in northern Gulf coast salt marshes affected by the spill. We compared bacterial and fungal endophytes isolated from plants in reference areas to isolates from plants collected in areas with residual oil that has persisted for more than three years after the DWH spill. DNA sequence-based estimates showed that oil exposure shifted endophyte diversity and community structure. Plants from oiled areas exhibited near total loss of leaf fungal endophytes. Root fungal endophytes exhibited a more modest decline and little change was observed in endophytic bacterial diversity or abundance, though a shift towards hydrocarbon metabolizers was found in plants from oiled sites. These results show that plant-endophyte symbioses can be disrupted by stressor exposure, and indicate that symbiont community disassembly in marsh plants is an enduring outcome of the DWH spill.  相似文献

A study has been made of the leaching of Cd, Zn, Pb, and Cu in three representative soils within the zone affected by the spill from a pyrite mine in Aznalcollar (Sevilla, Spain) employing packed soil columns. According to the breakthrough and cumulative leaching curves, the relative mobilities of the different toxic elements in the columns are as follows: Cd> Zn> Cu> Pb. The effect of leaching on the distribution of metals as a function of depth using intact soil cores was also studied. The results showed that the soils themselves have a good capacity for immobilizing the soluble fraction of the elements from the spilled mud. This capacity varied as follows: clayey soil with a high carbonate content > clayey soil with a moderate carbonate content > sandy-clay loam soil with a low carbonate content. However, sandy soils with a low carbonate content could pose a risk to groundwater if initial contamination was high. These results could be considered during the evaluation of remedial technologies for the immobilization of soil metals.  相似文献

Individuals of the bivalve Spisula subtruncata were fed a mixed diet comprising of sea water enriched with the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and ashed silt within a range of concentrations, simulating natural conditions above pseudofaeces threshold. The designed ranges for total particulate matter were between 10 and 30 mg l–1and organic content of seston 15–40%. Filtration rate, rejection rate, ingestion rate and absorption rate were measured at those different conditions. Filtration rate and rejection rate were significantly correlated to total particulate matter and percentage of organic matter, with higher rates at higher values of total particulate matter and lower values of percentage organic matter. Ingestion rate was maintained at similar levels in all the treatments and organic enrichment of the ingested food occurred due to preingestive selection of the filtered material. A differential absorption rate occurred at different levels of organic matter in the diet with high rates at high values of the organic content of the diet. S. subtruncata showed different physiological responses to changes of the food conditions: (1) Increase of pseudofaeces production at increasing levels of particulate matter, (2) preingestive selection of organic material which enriched the organic fraction of ingested food, (3) stabilized ingestion rate and (4) increase of the absorption rate at high organic levels of the seston.  相似文献

The bivalve Donax vittatus (da Costa) occurs in Kames Bay, Millport, Scotland,only intermittantly. Successful settlements may occur with a frequency of no more than two in twenty years. There was one such settlement in the summer of 1962. The distribution in 1967 of survivors from this settlement was mainly just below L.W.S.T. Natural floodplains play an essential role in the processing and decomposition of organic matter and in the self-purification ability of rivers, largely due to the activity of bacteria. Knowledge about the composition of bacterial communities and its impact on organic-matter cycling is crucial for the understanding of ecological processes in river-floodplain systems. Particle-associated and free-living bacterial assemblages from the Danube River and various floodplain pools with different hydrological characteristics were investigated using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The particle-associated bacterial community exhibited a higher number of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and was more heterogeneous in time and space than the free-living community. The temporal dynamics of the community structure were generally higher in isolated floodplain pools. The community structures of the river and the various floodplain pools, as well as those of the particle-associated and free-living bacteria, differed significantly. The compositional dynamics of the planktonic bacterial communities were related to changes in the algal biomass, temperature, and concentrations of organic and inorganic nutrients. The OTU richness of the free-living community was correlated with the concentration and origin of organic matter and the concentration of inorganic nutrients, while no correlation with the OTU richness of the particle-associated assemblage was found. Our results demonstrate the importance of the river-floodplain interactions and the influence of damming and regulation on the bacterial-community composition.  相似文献

The development of dorsoventral polarity in Dentalium dentale has been analyzed after inhibiting first polar lobe formation with cytochalasin B and bisecting the egg into two equal parts at an early trefoil stage. Cleavage pattern and morphogenesis have been studied in both in vivo and permanent cytological preparations. After bisecting the egg, each blastomere may fuse with its adhering polar lobe half and subsequently behave as a CD blastomere. The polar lobe substance may induce both halves to develop an apical tuft and probably also a posttrochal region. Cytochalasin B embryos which pass through an equal first cleavage form a four-cell stage in which the two D blastomeres are situated opposite or adjacent to each other (CDCD or CCDD embryos, respectively). During further development the larvae show a duplication of lobe-dependent structures. It is concluded that dorsoventral polarity originates epigenetically by fusion of the polar lobe with one of the first two blastomeres and is not preformed in the uncleaved egg.  相似文献

The breeding cycle, recruitment, population dynamics, growth and production ofScrobicularia plana were studied at one station in the Bidasoa estuary (SE of the Biscay Bay, Spain) during a period of 3 or 4 years. To complete this study, the reproduction for a period of 1 year was analysed at two other sites of the estuary. At none of the stations important differences in spawning activity were observed between the different years. The animals reproduced for the first time when they reached the age of two years. The histological data and the recruitment analysis showed only one spawning period between June and mid-September, with a peak in July-August. This breeding pattern differs from those shown by other southern European populations. The recruitment of spat (0.25–0.50 mm) occurred from June–July to October–December in different years. The population showed different annual patterns of density and population structure, depending on recruitment success. Growth was most rapid in spring and summer. The bivalves reached a mean length of 21.8 mm at the age of approximately 16 months; in the following year they grew to 30 mm. The growth during the life span fitted the theoretical growth equation of Von Bertalanffy. Annual production was in the range of 59.0–83.4 g AFDW m–2 year–1. The P/B ratios of the population varied between 0.84 and 1.48 (1.06 ± 1.36; ¯x ± 95% C.I.).  相似文献

Spisula subtruncata is an infaunal filter-feeding bivalve, which lives in shallow sandy bottoms (2-20 m depth) from Norway to the Atlantic coasts of Morocco, including the Mediterranean Sea. Considering that fisheries of this species have become an important economic resource in some European countries (e.g. The Netherlands), it is of great interest to know the seasonal variation in its physiological energetics. For this purpose, individuals of S. subtruncata were collected and maintained under ambient temperature and seawater conditions of Dutch coastal waters. Physiological processes related to the acquisition and utilisation of energy (e.g. clearance rate [CR], absorption and oxygen uptake) were measured under ambient conditions of the period March 1999 to February 2000. Mean annual clearance and respiration rates (RR) were 0.99 l h−1 and 0.23 ml O2 h−1 for a standard individual of 250 mg. Values for both clearance and respiration rate were high during spring and summer and low during autumn and winter. Stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated a significant relationship of the clearance rate with temperature and particulate organic matter (POM), whereas respiration rate was significantly related to temperature, absorption rate (AR) of the animals and their reproductive condition. Absorption efficiency (AE) of the food was significantly related to food quality. Scope for growth (SFG) of S. subtruncata, as well as flesh weight of the animals, was high in summer and low in winter.  相似文献

Bacterial population changes were investigated in the monomictic Lake Estanya by combining microscopic analysis and two molecular methods involving the amplification of 16S rDNA genes using primers for the domain Bacteria and subsequent restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR–DGGE). Both approaches revealed the vertical distribution of predominant microbial morphotypes and phylotypes in both holomictic and stratified periods, respectively, and showed that variations in structure and composition of bacterial populations are occurring in this lake as a function of depth and time. Through principal component analysis (PCA), these shifts could be related to different physicochemical parameters with temperature, oxygen concentration, and the incident light being of paramount importance as structuring variables. Comparison of RFLP and DGGE profiles by scoring similarities using the Jaccard coefficient and then building a multidimensional scaling map (MDS) showed equivalent results. Both techniques revealed that bacterial populations, present in the whole water column in the holomictic period, showed a high similarity with those located in the deeper part of the lake in the stratified period, evidencing that other factors, both biotic and abiotic, should also be considered as a force driving change in the composition of the bacterial community. Furthermore, DGGE analysis showed that sequences from prominent bands were affiliated to members of four major phyla of the domain Bacteria: Cyanobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria, most of which corresponded to heterotrophic bacterial populations involved in carbon, sulfide, and nitrogen biogeochemical cycles, which were indistinguishable under the light microscope.  相似文献

Twenty-three Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium isolates from marine environments were characterized by phage typing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis, plasmid analysis, and antibiotic resistance, and the distribution of the different types in the coastal waters were subsequently analyzed. Five phage types were identified among the isolates (PT41, PT135, PT99, DT104, and DT193). PT135 isolates were exclusively detected during the winter months from 1998 to 2000, whereas DT104 and PT41 isolates were detected exclusively in the summer months from 2000 to 2002. XbaI PFGE analysis revealed 9 PFGE types, and plasmid profiling identified 8 plasmid types (with 1 to 6 plasmids) among the isolates. Only three isolates presented multidrug resistance to antibiotics. Two DT104 isolates were resistant to 8 and 7 antibiotics (profiles ACCeFNaSSuT and ACeFNeSSuT), whereas a PT193 isolate presented resistance to 6 antibiotics (profile ACFSSu). In addition, four PT41 isolates were resistant to a single antibiotic. The detection of multidrug-resistant phage types DT104 and DT193 in shellfish emphasizes the importance of monitoring the presence of Salmonella in routine surveillance of live bivalve molluscs.  相似文献

Multivariate analyses of fatty acid composition of Astarte sulcata, collected in Northwest Norway in October 2005, showed significant differences between geographically close populations. This biochemical heterogeneity may have been caused by high genetic drift due to the direct development of the species. The results indicate that deep basins may provide an alternative bathymetric guide for spreading of offspring rather than being carried on currents crossing such basins. Thus, the combination of biology and topography might have led to the observed pattern that populations from opposite sides of a fjord are biochemically more distant than populations along the same side of a fjord/basin.  相似文献

Bacterial community dynamics in South End tidal creek, Sapelo Island, GA, were studied over a 74-h, five-tidal-cycle period. Observations were made hourly for the first consecutive 24 hours, every 3 hours on the second day, and every 6 hours on the third day. Tide most strongly influenced bacterial community composition (high-tide versus low-tide community analysis of similarities, R = 0.41, P < 0.03). Dissolved oxygen concentration and conductivity were important proximate drivers. However, after accounting for tide and environmental variables colinear with tide, cumulative time became more important in describing community variation. In-stream physical processes, including particulate suspension and sedimentation, may explain tide-associated trends in the bacterial community composition observed.  相似文献

Wound closure of the siphon of Scrobicularia plana (da Costa), after amputation of the tip, is complete within 48 h. Once the lesion has been plugged by connective tissue new epithelial tissue begins to grow and is fully formed 96 h after wounding. As the epithelial cells are being formed, regeneration of the siphon commences at a rate of ≈ 6 mg per wk. When expressed in terms of percentage weight increase of the total siphon weight (20%) this rate is comparable with that calculated for other bivalves. The siphon continues to grow until the original size is attained. When small amounts of siphon are removed (15% of total siphon), regeneration is of little energetic cost, even when animals are starved. When greater amounts are, however, removed from unfed animals (e.g. 50% of the total siphon) regeneration takes place at the expense of the body condition, the animal using 0.6 kJ of body energy to replace 0.2 kJ of siphon.  相似文献

Among the Pleistocene localities of the Sierra de Atapuerca, the site called Sima del Elefante is famous for having delivered in its lower level (TE-LRU) some hominid remains currently considered the oldest in Western Europe (about 1.2 Ma). In its upper part (TE-URU), this site has fossiliferous levels pertaining to the late Middle Pleistocene (350-250 ka). Here we describe for the first time the amphibians and reptiles of these upper levels (TE18 and TE19), which have proved to be one of the richest assemblages of all the localities of the Sierra de Atapuerca. The faunal list is composed of 18 taxa made up of urodeles (Salamandra salamandra and Lissotriton helveticus), anurans (Discoglossus sp., Alytes sp. Pelobates cultripes, Pelodytes punctatus, Bufo bufo, Bufo calamita, Hyla arborea and cf. Rana sp.), a terrestrial tortoise (Testudo s.l.), lizards (Lacerta s.l., Podarcis sp. and Anguis fragilis) and snakes (Natrix natrix, Natrix maura, Coronella cf. girondica and Vipera latasti). For the first time, the genera Lissotriton, Discoglossus and Podarcis are mentioned in the Pleistocene localities of the Sierra de Atapuerca. TE19 also corresponds to the earliest mention for L. helveticus in the Iberian Peninsula. With the exception of tortoises, all these species are currently present in the province of Burgos, and thus suggests that the herpetofauna has a modern aspect since the Middle Pleistocene. This association of amphibians and reptiles suggests a slightly warmer climate than the current one, but may correspond to a “cold and dry” period if compared with other Pleistocene localities of the Sierra de Atapuerca. The landscape was probably composed of a gallery forest along a quiet water river within a Mediterranean environment alternating laterally between dry meadows, rocky or stony areas and open scrubland.  相似文献

We conducted an investigation of heavy metal concentrations in Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) and surface sediments after the Dalian Port oil spill. Samples were collected from three mariculture zones (Jinshitan, Dalijia, and Pikou) along the Dalian coast. Heavy metal concentrations in R. philippinarum were consistent and ranked in decreasing order of Zn > Cu > As > Cr > Pb > Cd > Hg, while concentrations in surface sediments were ranked as Zn > Cr > Cu > Pb > As > Cd > Hg, respectively. Bioaccumulation of Zn, Cd, and Hg had obviously occurred in R. philippinarum. Statistically significant correlations (p?<?0.05) between concentrations of Pb, Cd, and Hg in R. philippinarum and in surface sediments were observed. Except for Cr and As, heavy metal concentrations in R. philippinarum were well within the legal limits for human consumption.  相似文献

Microbial communities are responsible for important ecosystem processes, and their activities are regulated by environmental factors such as temperature and solar ultraviolet radiation. Here we investigate changes in aquatic microbial community structure, diversity, and evenness in response to changes in temperature and UV radiation. For this purpose, 15 mesocosms were seeded with both microbial mat communities and plankton from natural pools within the Cuatro Cienegas Basin (Mexico). Clone libraries (16S rRNA) were obtained from water samples at the beginning and at the end of the experiment (40 days). Phylogenetic analysis indicated substantial changes in aquatic community composition and structure in response to temperature and UV radiation. Extreme treatments with elevation in temperature or UV radiation reduced diversity in relation to the Control treatments, causing a reduction in richness and increase in dominance, with a proliferation of a few resistant operational taxonomic units. Each phylum was affected differentially by the new conditions, which translates in a differential modification of ecosystem functioning. This suggests that the impact of environmental stress, at least at short term, will reshape the aquatic bacterial communities of this unique ecosystem. This work also demonstrates the possibility of designing manageable synthetic microbial community ecosystems where controlled environmental variables can be manipulated. Therefore, microbial model systems offer a complementary approach to field and laboratory studies of global research problems associated with the environment.  相似文献
