Annona emarginata (Annonaceae) has two morphological variations (A. emarginata ‘mirim’ and A. emarginata ‘terra-fria’). The species has agricultural value and produces specialized metabolites of pharmacological interest. The objective of this work was to analyze whether chemical and morphological differences contribute to differentiate A. emarginata ‘terra-fria’ from A. emarginata ‘mirim’, as chemophenetic variations of A. emarginata. The analysis of chemical compounds was based on the quantification, profile of root alkaloids and on the leaves volatile profile, together with morphometric analyses of the leaf blade. The samples were collected in three phenological stages (flowering, fruiting, and vegetative) at two places in São Paulo, Brazil. Differences in the composition of the alkaloid profile and leaf volatiles (in both places and in the three phenological stages) allowed us to separate the two morphotypes by multivariate statistical analysis. These differences agreed with the leaf blade morphology and flower color. This first chemophenetic report of A. emarginata demonstrates that, in addition to morphological variations, the specialized metabolism of roots and leaves can be phytochemical characters, which suggest the existence of at least morphochemotypes of A. emarginata.  相似文献

1. Both the clearance rates (CR) and abundances of the freshwater sponge Ephydatia muelleri and the bryozoans Plumatella emarginata and Fredericella sultana were investigated from autumn to spring under different temperature regimes. The experiments were performed in bypass channels of the River Rhine (Cologne, Germany) in which temperature could be manipulated. 2. The impact of temperature increase on CRs depends upon the grazer: E. muelleri showed a clear increase in CRs with increasing temperature whereas P. emarginata was not significantly affected by experimental warming. 3. Distinct differences in food preference were found for the sponge (which is an efficient grazer of bacteria and small algae) and for the bryozoan P. emarginata (which feeds primarily on large algae, and with no significant grazing on bacteria). 4. In contrast to their temperature‐related patterns in CR, respiration of both P. emarginata and E. muelleri increased with temperature between 19 and 32 °C, suggesting that the risk of experiencing energy deficiency at high temperatures due to increased metabolic rates is particularly high for the bryozoan. 5. A temperature elevation of 3 °C above the natural Rhine temperature resulted in a delay in the disappearance of active tissue and formation of resting stages for E. muelleri in autumn. This delay ranged from 8 (beginning of gemmulation) to 22 days (termination of gemmulation). In contrast, there was no distinct effect of warming on the disappearance of active zooids of the two bryozoan species in autumn. However, warming can positively affect the maintenance of active zooids during winter in F. sultana. In spring, the appearance of active zooids of P. emarginata was clearly stimulated by temperature elevations, whereas the hatching of both F. sultana and E. muelleri was hardly affected by warming. 6. The study demonstrated different patterns in the thermal ecology of the two freshwater bryozoans and the sponge in comparison to other filter feeders, particularly mussels. Such patterns need to be considered when predicting the impact of temperature on pelagic‐benthic coupling in aquatic habitats.  相似文献

Cyclocephline scarabs and their host plants are documented as highly specialized plant–pollinator associations, with various fine‐tuned adaptations. We studied the association between Philodendron adamantinum, a species endemic to the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais, South‐East Brazil, and its exclusive pollinators. We focused on the pollination mechanism and reproductive success of P. adamantinum, analysed its floral scent composition, and performed field bioassays to verify the scent‐mediated attraction of pollinators. The reproductive success of P. adamantinum depends on the presence of Erioscelis emarginata (Scarabaeidae, Cyclocephalini), its sole pollinator. At dusk, the inflorescences heat up to 18 °C above the surrounding ambient air temperature and give off a strong sweet odour, from which 32 volatile compounds were isolated. Dihydro‐β‐ionone, the major constituent in the floral scent bouquet, lures individuals of E. emarginata when applied to scented artificial decoys, either alone or blended with methyl jasmonate. We attribute the low fruit set of P. adamantinum at our study sites to pollinator limitation of small and isolated populations and geitonogamic pollen flow of vegetatively generated clonal plant groups. The interaction between P. adamantinum and E. emarginata shows common traits typical of the known plant–pollinator associations involving cyclocephaline scarabs: the asymmetrical dependence of plants on their pollinators, and the scent‐mediated interaction between flowers and beetles. In addition to updating the current catalogue of active compounds of cantharophilous pollination systems, further experimental studies should elucidate the role of the specific chemical compounds that attract pollinators along different time and biogeographic scales. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111 , 679–691.  相似文献

Revision of Passiflora subgenus Passiflora section Dysosmia DC. (Passifloraceae). The twenty one species and 10 varieties (31 taxa) comprising subgenus Passiflora section Dysosmia DC are described and some are illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Two species, Passiflora vesicaria L. and Passiflora ciliata (Dryand) Mast., are removed from synonymy and reinstated to species rank. Passiflora baraquiniana Lemaire is removed from synonymy and given varietal status. The species Passiflora santiagana (Killip) Borhidi is reduced in rank to varietal status. Of the 38 varieties of Passiflora foetida L. described by E. P. Killip in his 1938 monograph, 28 are reduced to synonymy, four are reassigned as varieties of other species and four remain as varieties of P. foetida. A new variety, Passiflora foetida var. ellisonii Vanderplank, is described with photographs and line drawings.  相似文献

Two recently diverged northeastern Pacific sibling snail species, Nucella ostrina and N. emarginata, currently inhabit adjacent zoogeographic provinces. Their distributions overlap in central California to the north of a major faunal boundary at Point Conception, California (PC). To test the hypothesis that modern sympatry is due to a recent northward range expansion by N. emarginata, I analyzed the population structures of both species with nuclear (allozyme) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers. Populations of N. emarginata in the region of overlap exhibit significantly lower heterozygosity and allelic diversity than either populations to the south of PC or populations of N. ostrina. A single mtDNA haplotype characterizes all but one population of N. emarginata sampled in this region, but no haplotype to the south of PC is found at more than one locality. MtDNA haplotypes and allozyme allele frequencies also indicate monophyly of central California populations of N. emarginata. Sharp differences in allelic diversity over small geographic distances may reflect the action of natural selection, but because both nuclear and mtDNA markers display concordant patterns, a range expansion across PC best explains patterns of genetic variation in N. emarginata. Allozymes and mtDNA also reveal that the geologically older N. ostrina is paraphyletic with respect to N. emarginata. This pattern is consistent with, but not indicative of, a peripheral isolation model of speciation. Low genetic diversity is also expected if a significant bottleneck occurred at speciation. However, low allelic diversity is not universal throughout the geographic range of N. emarginata; high allelic diversity at the southern end of the distribution of N. emarginata suggests that in the past N. emarginata has been geographically restricted much further south than PC. A northward range expansion across PC by N. emarginata may thus represent only the most recent postglacial movement by the species. The thermal and oceanographic discontinuities found at PC may not have been directly involved in geographic isolation if N. emarginata originated much further south of this modern boundary. Despite uncertainty regarding the exact spatial distribution of populations at speciation, genetic data indicate that even though N. ostrina and N. emarginata currently exhibit a broad range of geographic overlap, speciation was likely allopatric and was initiated by physical isolation of populations in different zoogeographic provinces.  相似文献

Wallace's Riverine Barrier hypothesis is one of the earliest biogeographic explanations for Amazon speciation, but it has rarely been tested in plants. In this study, we used three woody Amazonian plant species to evaluate Wallace's Hypothesis using tools of landscape genomics. We generated unlinked single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data from the nuclear genomes of 234 individuals (78 for each plant species) across 13 sampling sites along the Rio Branco, Brazil, for Amphirrhox longifolia (8,075 SNPs), Psychotria lupulina (9,501 SNPs) and Passiflora spinosa (14,536 SNPs). Although significantly different migration rates were estimated between species, the population structure data do not support the hypothesis that the Rio Branco—an allopatric barrier for primates and birds—is a significant genetic barrier for Amphirrhox longifolia, Passiflora spinosa or Psychotria lupulina. Overall, we demonstrated that medium‐sized rivers in the Amazon Basin, such as the Rio Branco, are permeable barriers to gene flow for animal‐dispersed and animal‐pollinated plant species.  相似文献

The seagrass Halodule emarginata is an endemic tropical species of Brazil, previously found from São Paulo to Bahia. The present study gives more ecological information of this species and report the extension of its northern range where it occurs in an estuarine area of Aquiraz‐Ceará, semiarid coast of Brazil. In November 2014, the meadow was discovered, georeferenced and mapped. Five cores were collected for morphometrical analyses of H. emarginata and associated florofaunistic species. Two beds of H. emarginata with areas of 177.8 m2 and 5012.3 m2 were identified in the estuary of the Pacoti River, indicating an extension of its known range by 1500 km to the north. Despite the emarginate apex, morphological patterns revealed that specimens were slightly less developed than previously described in the literature, probably due to estuarine stress. However, algal biodiversity (seven species) in the studied meadows was within the range observed for other estuarine meadows in Brazil, with presence of Rhodophyta and Chlorophyta. The main groups of invertebrate megafauna were present, including 13 taxa mainly of Mollusca, Crustacea and Polychaeta. This meadow will be monitored in order to understand its dynamics and relationships with other florofaunistic species and its responses to environmental variations.  相似文献

Among the major pathogens affecting passion fruit orchards, the cowpea aphid‐borne mosaic virus (CABMV), also known as the fruit‐hardening virus, has gained prominence owing to its role in the drastic reduction in fruit production in yellow passion fruit orchards (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) from the second year of cultivation. To mitigate the damage, several regions adopt the annual planting system where a sanitary void is maintained from August to September. However, the virus is believed to remain dormant in weeds. This study aimed to identify potential weed hosts of CABMV. The study was conducted with a randomized design with four replications in Londrina, PR. Twenty‐eight weed species were tested, and a sample of yellow passion fruit leaves symptomatic for CABMV infection was used as the virus inoculum source. Mechanical inoculation was performed using the extract from the symptomatic plant. Symptoms were visually evaluated every 3 days. For molecular confirmation, total RNA was extracted, followed by RT‐PCR with CABMV‐specific oligonucleotides, reinoculation in passion fruit plants and sequencing. CABMV infection was observed in southern sandbur (Cenchrus echinatus), Siberian motherwort (Leonurus sibiricus), showy rattlepod (Crotalaria spectabilis) and yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis). The CABMV‐positive weed species extract was able to infect yellow passion fruit plant when a fresh mechanical inoculation was performed. Showy rattlepod (Crotalaria spectabilis) was the only weed species to exhibit observable symptoms of CABMV. C. echinatus, L. sibiricus and C. spectabilis act as a source of CABMV inoculum.  相似文献

A new freshwater bryozoan species, Plumatella mukaii, is recognized from eastern Asia and western South America. Colonies and statoblasts both bear a resemblance to P. emarginata, and have often been confused with that species, especially in Japanese studies. Floatoblasts and sessoblasts are enclosed within a tough, wrinkled, membrane which resists removal by mechanical means. Floatoblasts are generally smaller than those of P. emarginata, but display unusually high variability in their overall dimensions. The species has been reported from both lentic and lotic habitats. In Asia, the range includes Japan, Korea, China, India and Indonesia. It has most recently also been found at several sites in Chile. The recognition of P. mukaii narrows the previously reported range of P. emarginata and invites a re-inspection of that species worldwide.  相似文献

Recruitment in clonal organisms often involves both sexual and asexual processes whereby new individuals are added to adult populations. During 1988–1990,1 examined local distribution and abundance patterns, substrate colonization, and recruitment in riffle populations of the freshwater bryozoan Plumatella emarginata. Abundance levels of P. emarginata at eight selected study sites were strongly dependent on substrate size but not on overall substrate availability or stream position. Colonization of large, P. emarginata-free substrates at one site resulted in an aggregated dispersion pattern of short-lived colonies and the production of locally persistent sessoblasts. Sessoblast production rates were dependent of colony size and number. However, the estimated single season rates of colonization and recruitment were insufficient to account for the high resident population on large substrates. I conclude that sessoblast persistence is essential for escaping mortality and promoting future recruitment and local population growth and that the population dynamics of P. emarginata are strongly nonequilibrial being influenced by unpredictable disturbances as well as by rates of recruitment which increase with local density.

Global changes in nutrient deposition rates are likely to have profound effects on plant communities, particularly in the nutrient‐limited systems of the tropics. We studied the effects of increased nutrient availability on the seedlings of six tree species in montane forests of southern Ecuador in situ. After five years of continued N, P, or N+P addition, naturally grown seedlings of each of the two most common species at each elevation (1000, 2000, and 3000 m asl) were harvested for analyses of leaf morphology, nutrient content, herbivory, and tissue biomass allocation. Most species showed increased foliar N and P concentrations after addition of each respective element. Leaf tissue N:P ratios of >20 in the control plants of all species suggest that P is more growth‐limiting in these forests than N. Leaf morphological responses to nutrient addition were species and nutrient specific, with some species (Hedyosmum purparescens, Graffenrieda emarginata) exhibiting increased specific leaf area (SLA), and others (Graffenrieda harlingii) increased leaf area ratios (LAR). Pouteria torta (1000 m) had lower SLA and LAR after P addition. Increased herbivory was only evident in G. emarginata (after N and N+P addition). Only the species from 3000 m asl modified biomass allocation after nutrient addition. In general, N and N+P addition more strongly affected the species studied at the upper elevations, whereas P addition had a similar range of effects on the species at all elevations. We conclude that the responses of the studied tropical montane forest tree seedlings to chronic N and P addition are highly species‐specific and that successful adaptation to increased nutrient availability will depend on species‐specific morphological and physiological plasticity.  相似文献

Five new coumarins, clauemarmarins I – M ( 1 – 4 ), together with 10 known analogs ( 5 – 14 ), were isolated from the stems of Clausena emarginata. Compounds 8 – 13 were obtained from this plant for the first time. Their structures were established and elucidated by comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data. The absolute configurations of 1 – 4 were further determined by their electronic circular dichroism spectroscopy. Compounds 5 , 7 , 12 , and 14 exhibited inhibitory effects on LPS‐induced NO production. Compounds 5 – 7 showed selective neuroprotective effects in Aβ25 – 35 model at 10 μm .  相似文献

Insects observed in groups in nature may be gathered either by attractants from the environment or by conspecifics. Field distribution data alone are thus insufficient to assess congregation by conspecifics and complementary laboratory tests of spacing patterns are required. Such tests were performed in four species of Zetoborinae (Insecta, Blattaria), for which field studies showed differences in spatial distribution (Schultesia lampyridiformis Roth, Phortioeca nimbata Burmeister, Lanxoblatta emarginata Burmeister and Thanatophyllum akinetum Grandcolas). Gregariousness, mobility, and sticking to shelters were compared between these four species. Tests were performed on pairs of adults of the same sex and opposite sexes, and also on first instar larvae, either in isolation or in groups of two and four individuals. In S. lampyridiformis, adults were strongly gregarious, whereas larvae dispersed early after birth and were very mobile during the first instar. In P. nimbata, larvae and adults were gregarious, while in L. emarginata larvae were weakly gregarious, and gregariousness decreased when density increased. Adults of L. emarginata seemed to be indifferent to each other. Larvae and adults of T. akinetum were solitary and they actively dispersed. The varying levels of gregariousness among species are discussed according to the known ecological habits in Zetoborinae.  相似文献

The body size of insects is affected by environmental conditions during development and can present considerable intraspecific variations, which can be seen as an ultimate consequence/adaptation to environmental conditions. This paper evaluated whether the body size of the butterfly Dryas iulia from subtropical populations was influenced by changing climate conditions and food source availability during the seasons. The likely reasons behind body size variation were also investigated. First, field data on body size variation, host‐plant availability and climate fluctuation throughout the seasons were recorded. Then, the effects of host‐plant species and temperature on body size were analyzed by controlled experiments. Field data revealed that body size and host‐plant availability varied significantly through the seasons. Populations had the smallest body size during the spring and the biggest size during summer, whereas host‐plant availability was lower during winter and higher during spring. The controlled experiments revealed that both temperature and host‐plant had significant effect on the plasticity of body size. Larvae subjected to winter temperature treatment led to smaller butterflies when compared to immatures reared under summer temperature treatment, and larvae fed with Passiflora misera produced bigger adults when compared to larvae reared on Passiflora suberosa. The combination of data gathered in the field and in the laboratory suggests that seasonal body size variation in D. iulia is related mainly to differences in the temperatures to which larvae are subjected during development, while host‐plant shifts caused by differential availability of food through the seasons had slightly effects on the variation observed.  相似文献

Of the 15 species of passion vines recorded for the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, nine are used by Heliconius erato phyllis (Fabricius, 1775). The larvae of this species feed preferentially on Passiflora misera H.B.K., which confers greater performance despite presenting smaller amounts of nutrients than other host plants. Thus, the performance associated with the consumption of a passion vine is possibly related not only to its nutritional content but also to the morphological and behavioral mechanisms involved in the feeding. In this study, the difficulties in accessing food imposed by the hosts (P. misera, Passiflora suberosa L., Passiflora caerulea L., Passiflora edulis Sims, and Passiflora alata Dryand.) were evaluated. Focal observations were performed every 2 min during 6-h sessions (sequential sampling), and the relative time spent for different behaviors (resting, feeding, walking, tasting, and vein cutting) was quantified on both young and old leaves. Larvae devoted more time feeding on P. misera in most cases. Larvae observed on P. alata devoted more to time resting and less time feeding, performing one or two meals of small duration, every 6 h. First instar caterpillars on old leaves of P. suberosa and P. caerulea spent more time walking, searching for a favorable feeding site. The hardness of leaves may be a limiting factor for the initial instars in this heliconian.  相似文献
