The ability to deposit conformal catalytic thin films enables opportunities to achieve complex nanostructured designs for catalysis. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is capable of creating conformal thin films over complex substrates. Here, ALD‐MnOx on glassy carbon is investigated as a catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), two reactions that are of growing interest due to their many applications in alternative energy technologies. The films are characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, and cyclic voltammetry. The as‐deposited films consist of Mn(II)O, which is shown to be a poor catalyst for the ORR, but highly active for the OER. By controllably annealing the samples, Mn2O3 catalysts with good activity for both the ORR and OER are synthesized. Hypotheses are presented to explain the large difference in the activity between the MnO and Mn2O3 catalysts for the ORR, but similar activity for the OER, including the effects of surface oxidation under experimental conditions. These catalysts synthesized though ALD compare favorably to the best MnOx catalysts in the literature, demonstrating a viable way to produce highly active, conformal thin films from earth‐abundant materials for the ORR and the OER.  相似文献

Although the Li‐excess layered‐oxide Li2MnO3 has a high theoretical capacity, structural transformations within the oxide during electrochemical cycling lead to relatively low experimental capacities, hindering its use in practical applications. Here, aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy/electron energy loss spectroscopy and high‐resolution X‐ray diffraction are used to characterize the oxide following electrochemical cycling. Microscopy reveals the coexistence of regions with local monoclinic, spinel, and rock‐salt symmetries, indicating localized and inhomogeneous structural evolutions. Crystal structure transformations are observed both at the particle surface and in the bulk. At the surface, these transformed regions resemble spinel Mn3O4 or rock‐salt MnO, consistent with oxygen loss. In the bulk, the regions resemble defect spinels, such as the layered‐spinel LixMn4/3O4, which suggest a partial phase transformation consistent with oxygen retention. Both microscopy and diffraction data of the cycled sample indicate areas of pristine Li2MnO3; the presence of such areas, in close proximity to LixMn4/3O4 areas, suggests that the layered to spinel structure transformation is partially reversible. Spinel, disordered rock salt, and pristine areas are also observed in Li2MnO3 samples intentionally damaged by electron beam irradiation. This observation indicates that the dynamic processes resulting in phase transformations can be studied for a variety of oxide systems by a judicious selection of irradiation conditions.  相似文献

Spinel‐structured LiMn2O4 (LMO) is a desirable cathode material for Li‐ion batteries due to its low cost, abundance, and high power capability. However, LMO suffers from limited cycle life that is triggered by manganese dissolution into the electrolyte during electrochemical cycling. Here, it is shown that single‐layer graphene coatings suppress manganese dissolution, thus enhancing the performance and lifetime of LMO cathodes. Relative to lithium cells with uncoated LMO cathodes, cells with graphene‐coated LMO cathodes provide improved capacity retention with enhanced cycling stability. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that graphene coatings inhibit manganese depletion from the LMO surface. Additionally, transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that a stable solid electrolyte interphase is formed on graphene, which screens the LMO from direct contact with the electrolyte. Density functional theory calculations provide two mechanisms for the role of graphene in the suppression of manganese dissolution. First, common defects in single‐layer graphene are found to allow the transport of lithium while concurrently acting as barriers for manganese diffusion. Second, graphene can chemically interact with Mn3+ at the LMO electrode surface, promoting an oxidation state change to Mn4+, which suppresses dissolution.  相似文献

It has become clear that cycling lithium‐oxygen cells in carbonate electrolytes is impractical, as electrolyte decomposition, triggered by oxygen reduction products, dominates the cell chemistry. This research shows that employing an α‐MnO2/ramsdellite‐MnO2 electrode/electrocatalyst results in the formation of lithium‐oxide‐like discharge products in propylene carbonate, which has been reported to be extremely susceptible to decomposition. X‐ray photoelectron data have shown that what are likely lithium oxides (Li2O2 and Li2O) appear to form and decompose on the air electrode surface, particularly at the MnO2 surface, while Li2CO3 is also formed. By contrast, cells without α‐MnO2/ramsdellite‐MnO2 fail rapidly in electrochemical cycling, likely due to the differences in the discharge product. Relatively high electrode capacities, up to 5000 mAh/g (carbon + electrode/electrocatalyst), have been achieved with non‐optimized air electrodes. Insights into reversible insertion reactions of lithium, lithium peroxide (Li2O2) and lithium oxide (Li2O) in the tunnels of α‐MnO2, and the reaction of lithium with ramsdellite‐MnO2, as determined by first principles density functional theory calculations, are used to provide a possible explanation for some of the observed results. It is speculated that a Li2O‐stabilized and partially‐lithiated electrode component, 0.15Li2α‐LixMnO2, that has Mn4+/3+ character may facilitate the Li2O2/Li2O discharge/charge chemistries providing dual electrode/electrocatalyst functionality.  相似文献

The high‐energy‐density, Li‐rich layered materials, i.e., xLiMO2(1‐x)Li2MnO3, are promising candidate cathode materials for electric energy storage in plug‐in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs). The relatively low rate capability is one of the major problems that need to be resolved for these materials. To gain insight into the key factors that limit the rate capability, in situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) studies of the cathode material, Li1.2Ni0.15Co0.1Mn0.55O2 [0.5Li(Ni0.375Co0.25 Mn0.375)O2·0.5Li2MnO3], are carried out. The partial capacity contributed by different structural components and transition metal elements is elucidated and correlated with local structure changes. The characteristic reaction kinetics for each element are identified using a novel time‐resolved XAS technique. Direct experimental evidence is obtained showing that Mn sites have much poorer reaction kinetics both before and after the initial activation of Li2MnO3, compared to Ni and Co. These results indicate that Li2MnO3 may be the key component that limits the rate capability of Li‐rich layered materials and provide guidance for designing Li‐rich layered materials with the desired balance of energy density and rate capability for different applications.  相似文献

Poor cycling stability is one of the key scientific issues needing to be solved for Li‐ and Mn‐rich layered oxide cathode. In this paper, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is first used as a novel binder in Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 cathode to enhance its cycling stability. Electrochemical performance is conducted by galvanostatic charge and discharge. Structure and morphology are characterized by X‐ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results reveal that the CMC as binder can not only stabilize the electrode structure by preventing the electrode materials to detach from the current collector but also suppress the voltage fading of the Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 cathode due to Na+ ions doping. Most importantly, the dissolution of metal elements from the cathode materials into the electrolyte is also inhibited.  相似文献

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) combining a Li metal anode with a transition metal (TM) cathode can achieve higher practical energy densities (Wh L?1) than Li/S or Li/O2 cells. Research for improving the electrochemical behavior of the Li metal anode by, for example, modifying the liquid electrolyte is often conducted in symmetrical Li/Li or Li/Cu cells. This study now demonstrates the influence of the TM cathode on the Li metal anode, thus full cell behavior is analyzed in a way not considered so far in research with LMBs. Therefore, the deposition/dissolution behavior of Li metal and the resulting morphology is investigated with three different cathode materials (LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4, LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2, and LiFePO4) by post mortem analysis with a scanning electron microscope. The observed large differences of the Li metal morphology are ascribed to the dissolution and crossover of TMs found deposited on Li metal and in the electrolyte by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, and total reflection X‐ray fluorescence analysis. To support this correlation, the TM dissolution is simulated by adding Mn salt to the electrolyte. This study offers new insights into the cross talk between the Li metal anodes and TM cathodes, which is essential, when investigating Li metal electrodes for LMB full cells.  相似文献

A high voltage LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2/graphite cell with a fluorinated electrolyte formulation 1.0 m LiPF6 fluoroethylene carbonate/bis(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) carbonate is reported and its electrochemical performance is evaluated at cell voltage of 4.6 V. Comparing with its nonfluorinated electrolyte counterpart, the reported fluorinated one shows much improved Coulombic efficiency and capacity retention when a higher cut‐off voltage (4.6 V) is applied. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy data clearly demonstrate the superior oxidative stability of the new electrolyte. The structural stability of the bulk cathode materials cycled with different electrolytes is extensively studied by X‐ray absorption near edge structure and X‐ray diffraction.  相似文献

Tunnel‐type sodium manganese oxide is a promising cathode material for aqueous/nonaqueous sodium‐ion batteries, however its storage mechanism is not fully understood, in part due to the complicated sodium intercalation process. In addition, low cyclability due to manganese dissolution has limited its practical application in rechargeable batteries. Here, the intricate sodium intercalation mechanism of Na0.44MnO2 is revealed by combination of electrochemical characterization, structure determination from powder X‐ray diffraction data, 3D bond valence difference maps, and barrier‐energy calculations of the sodium diffusion. NaI is proposed as an important electrolyte solution additive. It is shown to form a thin, beneficial, and durable cathode surface film that prevents manganese dissolution. The addition of 0.01 m NaI to electrolyte solutions based on alkyl carbonate solvents and NaClO4 greatly improves the cycling efficiency, raising the capacity retention from 86% to 96% after 600 cycles. This study determines the core aspects of the sodium intercalation mechanism in tunnel‐type sodium manganese oxide and shows how it can serve as a durable cathode material for rechargeable Na batteries.  相似文献

Safety has been a major technological concern hindering the deployment of lithium‐ion batteries for automobile applications. We investigated the decomposition mechanism of delithiated cathode materials at thermal abuse conditions using Li1.1[Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3]0.9O2 as a model cathode material. An in‐situ high‐energy X‐ray diffraction technique was established as an alternative to conventional thermal analysis techniques like differential scanning calorimetry and accelerating rate calorimetry. The X‐ray diffraction data revealed that the thermal decomposition pathway of delithiated Li1‐x[Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3]0.9O2 strongly depended on the exposed chemical environment, like solvents and lithium salts. A phase transformation of dry delithiated Li1‐x[Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3]0.9O2 was observed at about 278 °C, and its onset temperature was reduced to about 197°C with the presence of the electrolyte. It is suggested that the reduction in thermal stability is possibly related to proton intercalation into the delithiated material.  相似文献

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) provides a promising route for depositing uniform thin coatings of electrocatalysts useful in many technologies, including the splitting of water. For materials such as NiO x that readily form hydrous oxides, however, the smooth, compact films deposited by ALD may result in higher overpotentials due to low catalyst surface area compared to other deposition methods. Here, the use of ALD–NiO thin films as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is explored. Thin films of crystalline ALD–NiO are deposited and OER activity is tested using cyclic voltammetry (CV). Fe incorporated from the electrolyte can increase the activity of NiO, and it is shown that the turnover frequency (TOF) increases tenfold by going from an Fe‐poor to Fe‐rich KOH electrolyte. Applying a potential exfoliates the NiO, increasing the number of electrochemically accessible Ni sites. Interestingly, by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and CV, it is found that an Fe‐rich electrolyte reduces the amount of restructuring and oxidation is found. It is shown that a high surface area, high TOF catalyst may be created by using a two‐step process in which the sample is sequentially conditioned in Fe‐poor then Fe‐rich KOH. This work highlights the importance of pretreatment on catalytic activity for compact NiO films deposited by ALD.  相似文献

Nickel‐substituted manganese spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) is a promising 5 V class positive electrode material for lithium‐ion batteries. As micron‐sized LNMO particles show high rate capability in its two‐phase coexistence regions, the phase transition mechanism is of great interest in understanding the electrode behavior at high rates. Here, the phase transition dynamics of LixNi0.5Mn1.5O4 is elucidated on high rate charging–discharging using operando time‐resolved X‐ray diffraction (TR‐XRD). The TR‐XRD results indicate the existence of intermediate states, in addition to the thermodynamically stable phases, and it is shown that the origin of such intermediate states is ascribed to the solid‐solution domains at the phase transition front, as supported by the analysis using transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy‐loss spectroscopy. The phase transition pathways dependent on the reaction rate are shown, together with possible explanation for this unique transition behavior.  相似文献

Layered lithium–nickel–cobalt–manganese oxide (NCM) materials have emerged as promising alternative cathode materials owing to their high energy density and electrochemical stability. Although high reversible capacity has been achieved for Ni‐rich NCM materials when charged beyond 4.2 V versus Li+/Li, full lithium utilization is hindered by the pronounced structural degradation and electrolyte decomposition. Herein, the unexpected realization of sustained working voltage as well as improved electrochemical performance upon electrochemical cycling at a high operating voltage of 4.9 V in the Ni‐rich NCM LiNi0.895Co0.085Mn0.02O2 is presented. The improved electrochemical performance at a high working voltage at 4.9 V is attributed to the removal of the resistive Ni2+O rock‐salt surface layer, which stabilizes the voltage profile and improves retention of the energy density during electrochemical cycling. The manifestation of the layered Ni2+O rock‐salt phase along with the structural evolution related to the metal dissolution are probed using in situ X‐ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. The findings help unravel the structural complexities associated with high working voltages and offer insight for the design of advanced battery materials, enabling the realization of fully reversible lithium extraction in Ni‐rich NCM materials.  相似文献

Cathode materials with high energy density, long cycle life, and low cost are of top priority for energy storage systems. The Li‐rich transition metal (TM) oxides achieve high specific capacities by redox reactions of both the TM and oxygen ions. However, the poor reversible redox reaction of the anions results in severe fading of the cycling performance. Herein, the vacancy‐containing Na4/7[Mn6/7(?Mn)1/7]O2 (?Mn for vacancies in the Mn? O slab) is presented as a novel cathode material for Na‐ion batteries. The presence of native vacancies endows this material with attractive properties including high structural flexibility and stability upon Na‐ion extraction and insertion and high reversibility of oxygen redox reaction. Synchrotron X‐ray absorption near edge structure and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies demonstrate that the charge compensation is dominated by the oxygen redox reaction and Mn3+/Mn4+ redox reaction separately. In situ synchrotron X‐ray diffraction exhibits its zero‐strain feature during the cycling. Density functional theory calculations further deepen the understanding of the charge compensation by oxygen and manganese redox reactions and the immobility of the Mn ions in the material. These findings provide new ideas on searching for and designing materials with high capacity and high structural stability for novel energy storage systems.  相似文献

Lithium‐air batteries with an aqueous alkaline electrolyte promise a much higher practical energy density and capacity than conventional lithium‐ion batteries. However, high cathode overpotentials are some of the main problems during cycling. In our previous work, a catalyst combination of Ag and Co3O4 is found that reduces overpotential significantly, and is highly active and also long‐term stable. In the present investigations, X‐ray diffraction and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy are applied to study the structure and composition of the cathode material during oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. Changes of the oxidation states during cycling are responsible for an enhanced oxygen evolution reaction current density but also for losses due to a lower electronic conductivity of the electrodes. The presence and formation of a mixed oxidation state for silver oxide (AgIAgIIIO2) at high potentials is identified. In contradiction to literature, time dependent X‐ray diffraction measurements evidence that this phase is not stable under dry conditions and progressively decays to Ag2O. Electrode mappings show a highly homogeneous oxidation of the electrodes during cycling and quantitative analysis of the observed phases is carried out by Rietveld analysis. Long‐term material behavior completes the investigations.  相似文献

Spinel‐layered composites, where a high‐voltage spinel is incorporated in a layered lithium‐rich (Li‐rich) cathode material with a nominal composition x{0.6Li2MnO3 · 0.4[LiCo0.333Mn0.333Ni0.333]O2} · (1 – x) Li[Ni0.5Mn1.5]O4 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1) are synthesized via a hydroxide assisted coprecipitation route to generate high‐energy, high‐power cathode materials for Li‐ion batteries. X‐ray diffraction patterns and the cyclic voltammetry investigations confirm the presence of both the parent components in the composites. The electrochemical investigations performed within a wide potential window show an increased structural stability of the spinel component when incorporated into the composite environment. All the composite materials exhibit initial discharge capacities >200 mAh g–1. The compositions with x = 0.5 and 0.7 show excellent cycling stability among the investigated materials. Moreover, the first cycle Coulombic efficiency achieve a dramatic improvement with the incorporation of the spinel component. More notably, the composite materials with increased spinel component exhibit superior rate capability compared with the parent Li‐rich material especially together with the highest capacity retention for x = 0.5 composition, making this as the optimal high‐energy high‐power material. The mechanisms involved in the symbiotic relationship of the spinel and layered Li‐rich components in the above composites are discussed.  相似文献

Bacillus sp. strain SG-1 is a marine bacterial species isolated from a near-shore manganese sediment sample. Its mature dormant spores promote the oxidation of Mn2+ to MnO2. By quantifying the amounts of immobilized and oxidized manganese, it was established that bound manganese was almost instantaneously oxidized. When the final oxidation of manganese by the spores was partly inhibited by NaN3 or anaerobiosis, an equivalent decrease in manganese immobilization was observed. After formation of a certain amount of MnO2 by the spores, the oxidation rate decreased. A maximal encrustment was observed after which no further oxidation occurred. The oxidizing activity could be recovered by reduction of the MnO2 with hydroxylamine. Once the spores were encrusted, they could bind significant amounts of manganese, even when no oxidation occurred. Purified spore coat preparations oxidized manganese at the same rate as intact spores. During the oxidation of manganese in spore coat preparations, molecular oxygen was consumed and protons were liberated. The data indicate that a spore coat component promoted the oxidation of Mn2+ in a biologically catalyzed process, after adsorption of the ion to incipiently formed MnO2. Eventually, when large amounts of MnO2 were allowed to accumulate, the active sites were masked and further oxidation was prevented.  相似文献

Aqueous sodium‐ion batteries have shown desired properties of high safety characteristics and low‐cost for large‐scale energy storage applications such as smart grid, because of the abundant sodium resources as well as the inherently safer aqueous electrolytes. Among various Na insertion electrode materials, tunnel‐type Na0.44MnO2 has been widely investigated as a positive electrode for aqueous sodium‐ion batteries. However, the low achievable capacity hinders its practical applications. Here, a novel sodium rich tunnel‐type positive material with a nominal composition of Na0.66[Mn0.66Ti0.34]O2 is reported. The tunnel‐type structure of Na0.44MnO2 obtained for this compound is confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and atomic‐scale spherical aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy/electron energy‐loss spectrum. When cycled as positive electrode in full cells using NaTi2(PO4)3/C as negative electrode in 1 m Na2SO4 aqueous electrolyte, this material shows the highest capacity of 76 mAh g?1 among the Na insertion oxides with an average operating voltage of 1.2 V at a current rate of 2 C. These results demonstrate that Na0.66[Mn0.66Ti0.34]O2 is a promising positive electrode material for rechargeable aqueous sodium‐ion batteries.  相似文献

A new and promising P2‐type layered oxide, Na5/6[Li1/4Mn3/4]O2 is prepared using a solid‐state method. Detailed crystal structures of the sample are analyzed by synchrotron X‐ray diffraction combined with high‐resolution neutron diffraction. P2‐type Na5/6[Li1/4Mn3/4]O2 consists of two MeO2 layers with partial in‐plane √3a × √3a‐type Li/Mn ordering. Na/Li ion‐exchange in a molten salt results in a phase transition accompanied with glide of [Li1/4Mn3/4]O2 layers without the destruction of in‐plane cation ordering. P2‐type Na5/6[Li1/4Mn3/4]O2 translates into an O2‐type layered structure with staking faults as the result of ion‐exchange. Electrode performance of P2‐type Na5/6[Li1/4Mn3/4]O2 and O2‐type Lix[Li1/4Mn3/4]O2 is examined and compared in Na and Li cells, respectively. Both samples show large reversible capacity, ca. 200 mA h g?1, after charge to high voltage regardless of the difference in charge carriers. Structural analysis suggests that in‐plane structural rearrangements, presumably associated with partial oxygen loss, occur in both samples after charge to a high‐voltage region. Such structural activation process significantly influences electrode performance of the P2/O2‐type phases, similar to O3‐type Li2MnO3‐based materials. Crystal structures, phase‐transition mechanisms, and the possibility of the P2/O2‐type phases as high‐capacity and long‐cycle‐life electrode materials with the multi‐functionality for both rechargeable Li/Na batteries are discussed in detail.  相似文献

A new orthochelated salt, lithium bis(monofluoromalonato)borate (LiBFMB), is synthesized and purified for application in lithium‐ion batteries. The presence of fluorine in the borate anion of LiBFMB increases its oxidation potential and also facilitates ion dissociation, as reflected by the ratio of ionic conductivity (σexp) and ion diffusivity coefficients (σNMR). Half‐cell tests using 5.0 V lithium nickel manganese oxide (LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4) as a cathode and ethylene carbonate (EC)/dimethyl carbonate (DMC)/diethyl carbonate (DEC) as a solvent reveals that the impedance of the LiBFMB cell is much larger than those of LiPF6‐ and lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB)‐based cells, which results in lower capacity and poor cycling performance of the former. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results for the cycled cathode electrode suggest that because of the stability of the LiBFMB salt, the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed on the cathode surface is significantly different from those of LiPF6 and LiBOB based electrolytes, resulting in more solvent decomposition and a thicker SEI layer. Initial results also indicate that using a high dielectric constant solvent, propylene carbonate, alters the surface chemistry, reduces the interfacial impedance, and enhances the performance of LiBFMB‐based 5.0 V cell.  相似文献
