The pelagic fish community of Loch Ness, U.K., is dominated by Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus. Previous studies have shown that the distribution of zooplankton along the south-west to north-east axis of this elongate loch is very dynamic and determined largely by prevailing winds, but Arctic charr are consistently more abundant in the southern half of the loch. In July 1993, the diet compositions of 161 Arctic charr from 53 to 330mm in length were determined and related to their spatial distribution and those of microcrustacean zooplankton and pelagic chironomid larvae and pupae. Diets were dominated by chironomid larvae, with chironomid pupae, Bythotrephes longimanus, Bosmina coregoni and Daphnia hyalina also frequently taken. Over the whole study period, B. longimanus were more important in the diet of fish from the northern half of the loch, while chironomid larvae were more important for fish from the southern half. As a result, per capita prey weight of fish from the south was greater than that of fish from the north. However, wind-induced changes in the distribution of zooplankton along the loch were accompanied by a change in the diet composition of Arctic charr from the south.  相似文献

  • 1 The vertical and horizontal distribution of phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish in Loch Ness, Scotland, were monitored during one day‐time and one night‐time survey in July 1992. The vertical samples were collected at a site located at the northern end of the loch and the horizontal samples along a longitudinal transect.
  • 2 The vertical distribution surveys demonstrated that the phytoplankton, the zooplankton and the fish were concentrated in the top 30 m of water above the seasonal thermocline. Within this layer, Cyclops stayed much closer to the surface than Eudiaptomus but both species moved towards the surface at night.
  • 3 The most important factor influencing the horizontal distribution of the phytoplankton was the north‐ south gradient in productivity. The sub‐catchments surrounding the north basin contain a greater proportion of arable land than those to the south and the concentrations of nitrate‐nitrogen and phytoplankton chlorophyll increased systematically from south to north.
  • 4 Zooplankton distribution patterns were influenced by wind‐induced water movements and the dispersion of allochthonous material from the main inflows. The highest concentrations of Cyclops were recorded in the north, where there was more phytoplankton, and the highest concentrations of Eudiaptomus in the south, where there were higher concentrations of non‐algal particulates.
  • 5 There was no spatial correlation between total zooplankton and total fish abundance but the highest concentrations of small (1–5 cm) fish were recorded in the south where there was a large patch of Eudiaptomus. The number of Eudiaptomus at specific locations within this patch were, however, negatively correlated with the numbers of small fish. These results suggest that the fish were actively foraging within the patch and were depleting their zooplankton prey in the areas where they were most abundant.

The natural abundance of stable isotopes (δ13C and δ1315N) was determined for components of the pelagic food web in Loch Ness, a deep oligotrophic lake in northern Scotland, and compared with values from the inflow rivers and the catchment vegetation. Phytoplankton δ13C was low compared to values reported from other lakes, possibly reflecting a high use of 13C-depleted carbon dioxide from respired organic matter before further isotopic fractionation during photosynthesis. Phytoplankton δ13C was appreciably lower than that of dissolved and particulate organic matter (DOM and POM) in the loch. The DOM and POM were evidently overwhelmingly of allochthonous origin and ultimately derived from terrestrial plant detritus. The distinctive δ13C values for phytoplankton and detritus in the loch allowed the use of food sources by grazing crustacean zooplankton to be assessed, and the contributions of phytoplankton carbon and detrital carbon to zooplankton total body carbon appeared to be about equal. Comparison of δ13C and δ15N values for zooplankton and fish allowed assessment of trophic structure in the loch. The very high dependence of the pelagic food web in Loch Ness on allochthonous organic matter inputs from the catchment may be exceptional in a large lake, but has important implications for our understanding of lake ecosystem processes as well as for lake management.  相似文献

  • 1 The underwater light climate in Loch Ness is described in terms of mixing depth (Zm) and depth of the euphoric zone (Zeu). During periods of complete mixing, Zm equates with the mean depth of the loch (132 m), but even during summer stratification the morphometry of the loch and the strong prevailing winds produce a deep thermocline and an epilimnetic mixed layer of about 30 m or greater. Hence, throughout the year the quotient Zm/Zeu is exceptionally high and the underwater light climate particularly unfavourable for phytoplankton production and growth.
  • 2 Phytoplankton biomass expressed as chlorophyll a is very low in Loch Ness, with a late summer maximum of less than 1.5 mg chlorophyll a m-3 in the upper 30 m of the water column. This low biomass and the resulting very low photosynthetic carbon fixation within the water column are evidence that a severe restraint is imposed on the rate at which phytoplankton can grow in the loch.
  • 3 The chlorophyll a content per unit of phytoplankton biovolume and the maximum, light-saturated specific rate of photosynthesis are both parameters which might be influenced by the light climate under which the phytoplankton have grown. However, values obtained from Loch Ness for both chlorophyll a content (mean 0.0045 mg mm-3) and maximum photosynthetic rate (1–4 mg C mg Chla-1 h-1) are within the range reported from other lakes.
  • 4 Laboratory bioassays with the natural phytoplankton community from Loch Ness on two occasions in late summer when the light climate in the loch is at its most favourable, suggest that even then limitation of phytoplankton growth is finely balanced between light and phosphorus limitation. Hence, for most of the year, when the light climate is less favourable, phytoplankton growth will be light limited.
  • 5 Quotients relating mean annual algal biomass as chlorophyll a (c. 0.5 mg Chla m-3) and the probable annual specific areal loading of total phosphorus (0.4–1.7 g TP m-2 yr-1) suggest that the efficiency with which phytoplankton is produced in Loch Ness per unit of TP loading is extremely low when compared with values from other Scottish lochs for which such an index has been calculated. This apparent inefficiency can be attributed to suppression of photosynthetic productivity in the water column due to the unfavourable underwater light climate.
  • 6 These several independent sources of evidence lead to the conclusion that phytoplankton development in Loch Ness is constrained by light rather than by nutrients. Loch Ness thus appears to provide an exception to the generally accepted paradigm that phytoplankton development in lakes of an oligotrophic character is constrained by nutrient availability.

Loch Lomond is the second largest body of freshwater in Great Britain. It is a long, narrow lake (36.4 km long, 8.8 km wide). The northern basin is fjord-like and surrounded by a mountainous, base-poor, rocky catchment. In contrast, the southern basin is much broader and shallower with a mainly lowland, calcareous, agricultural catchment. This causes a trophic gradient along the length of the loch that runs from the oligotrophic northern basin to the more mesotrophic southern basin. Rotifer samples were collected at monthly intervals between May and October 2002 at three locations along the length of the loch. More than 12 species were found, the commonest of which were Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) and Trichocerca stylata (Gosse). Although the species composition of the rotifer community varied very little among the sites, rotifer abundance increased markedly from north to south, apparently reflecting the trophic gradient along the length of the loch. The results suggest that rotifer abundance may be a more sensitive indicator of trophic state, and changes in trophic state, than species composition.  相似文献

The seasonal changes in the abundance of protozoan and bacterialplankton in a large, coloured, oligotrophic lake. Loch Ness(Scotland), were investigated between August 1991 and January1993. The coloured water supported only low concentrations ofchlorophyll a (<1.6 µgl–1). with the highestvalues occurring in summer. Mean bacterial abundance rangedbetween 2.3 x 108 and 7.1 x 108 l–1 in the 100 m watercolumn. Maximum abundance did not correlate with maximum chlorophylla concentrations, but appeared to be related to the input ofallochthonous carbon from the catchment, which in turn was influencedby rainfall levels. Consequently, the highest bacterioplanktonconcentrations occurred in autumn and winter. The pattern ofheterotrophic nanoflagellate abundance tended to follow thatfor bacteria, with mean concentrations in the top 100 m of thewater column of between 12 x 103 and 273 x 103 l–1. Ciliateabundance showed no seasonal trends over the study period andprobably mirrored the fluctuating availability of various foodresources. Oligotrichs, particularly mixotrophic taxa, werea prominent element of the community throughout the year. A seasonal and ecological study of the phytoplankton of Loch Lomond   总被引:5,自引:4,他引:1  
The seasonal succession of phytoplankton in Loch Lomond has been studied both quantitatively and from observations on net plankton. From a qualitative investigation of net phytoplankton Loch Lomond may be described as diatom-desmid in nature although from the quantitative studies the general domination of the population by diatoms becomes clear. During the vernal phytoplankton increase diatoms contributed more than 90% of the population throughout the loch. The bulk of the phytoplankton production occurred in the southern region, where the standing crop was considerably greater throughout the year than in other regions of the loch.Patterns of seasonal succession are described for all species which make an important contribution to the productivity of the loch and the observed successions related to measured physical and chemical changes in the water. Explanations are put forward to account for the absence of a second (autumnal) pulse ofMelosira in Loch Lomond. The appearance ofAnabaena circinalis is a possible indication of the changing trophic status of the southern region of the loch.  相似文献

为评价春季大旱后鄱阳湖国家级自然保护区浮游生物现状,对保护区所辖 8 个子湖及赣江和修河部分河段的浮游生物进行调查和分析。调查共发现浮游植物 53 属 97 种、浮游动物 23 属 42 种(包括原生动物 13 种、轮虫 23 种、枝角类 3 种和桡足类 3 种),其中大湖池和朱市湖是浮游生物种类数最多的 2 个子湖。各子湖及赣江和修河间浮游生物现存量差异较大,其变化范围分别为260(8.18106)cells/L(浮游植物)、363073173 ind./L(浮游动物),赣江以西区域的子湖和修河的浮游生物现存量显著高于赣江及其以东区域的子湖。调查水域优势度值(Y)大于 0.02 的浮游生物包括蓝藻 1 种、绿藻 2 种、硅藻 5 种、原生动物 4 种及轮虫 5 种。浮游生物 Shannon-Wiener 多样性指数(H')和均匀度指数(J)的最大值均分别为 2.41 和 0.96,而其丰富度指数(Dm)值均小于 3。3 种多样性指数综合评价表明,保护区各子湖与修河和赣江水体受污染程度较轻,除蚌湖和梅西湖外,均处于中污状态。    相似文献

本文报道了单养尼罗罗非鱼 (Orecohromisniloticus)对施肥处理下盐碱池塘围隔生态系统浮游生物群落的影响。结果表明 ,罗非鱼的放养使浮游植物丰度、叶绿素a含量和初级生产力增大 ,浮游植物小型化 ,生物量以小型硅藻和绿藻占优势 ,裸藻占有相当比重 ;浮游动物生物量也增大 ,桡足类占优势 ,枝角类小型化 ,原生动物密度增大。施肥特别是施有机肥能显著地提高浮游植物生物量 ,使透明度降低 ,但施无机肥对初级生产力和浮游动物生物量影响不大。施有机肥围隔浮游植物和浮游动物密度、浮游动物生物量和浮游生物多样性指数高于其他有鱼围隔 ,罗非鱼的生长最好。文后讨论了罗非鱼滤食和施肥对浮游生物群落结构的影响 ,并与鲢鱼的实验结果 (赵文 ,1999)进行了比较  相似文献

于2000年丰水期和枯水期调查分析了新建河流型水库-飞来峡水库在蓄水初期的营养状态及浮游生物特征。结果表明:水库处于营养累积高峰期,已开始回落,但流域上游大量含磷废水使水库中磷含量继续上升,目前属于中营养型。共记录到浮游植物29种(属),以蓝藻门、绿藻门、硅藻门种类较多,其中丰水期以蓝藻和绿藻为主,枯水期是硅藻占优势,除大坝附近外,浮游植物两个季节密度变化不大,为0.39×106cells·L-1.浮游动物53种(属),其中包括僧帽溞和透明薄皮溞两种嗜寒性种类,丰度为52ind.·L-1,枯水期高于丰水期,数量以轮虫和无节幼体为多。  相似文献

No previous study of plankton in lakes has estimated the relative contribution of ciliated protozoa to the biomass of the total plankton community, including phytoplankton. In a series of south-central Ontario lakes, ciliates comprise on the order of 5 to 10% of the total planktonic biomass of these relatively oligotrophic lakes and exist there in densities of 20–40 ml−1. Therefore, ciliates constitute an important component of lake ecosystems that should not be ignored in limnological studies of zooplankton abundance and distribution.  相似文献

The interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton were studied in two large lakes in the Saimaa lake system, Finland. Both are subjected to substantial waste water loading, and exhibit a clear trophic gradient between the loaded and unloaded areas. The phytoplankton and zooplankton were compared in terms of composition, abundance and biomass at 34–39 stations located in different parts of the lakes. At least four mechanisms were thought to affect the composition of plankton communities: (1) the amount of nutrients (trophic gradient), (2) grazing of algae by herbivores, (3) the effect of the algal species composition on feeding by zooplankters (large, colonial algae in the more loaded parts of the lakes) and (4) the regeneration and reorganization of nutrients.  相似文献

1. Aquatic ecosystems in Northern Europe are expected to face increases in temperature and water colour (TB) in future. While effects of these factors have been studied separately, it is unknown whether and how a combination of them might affect phenological events and trophic interactions. 2. In a mesocosm study, we combined both factors to create conditions expected to arise during the coming century. We focused on quantifying effects on timing and magnitude of plankton spring phenological events and identifying possible mismatches between resources (phytoplankton) and consumers (zooplankton). 3. We found that the increases in TB had important effects on timing and abundance of different plankton groups. While increased temperature led to an earlier peak in phytoplankton and zooplankton and a change in the relative timing of different zooplankton groups, increased water colour reduced chlorophyll‐a concentrations. 4. Increased TB together benefitted cladocerans and calanoid copepods and led to stronger top‐down control of algae by zooplankton. There was no sign of a mismatch between primary producers and grazers as reported from other studies. 5. Our results point towards an earlier onset of plankton spring growth in shallow lakes in future with a stronger top‐down control of phytoplankton by zooplankton grazers.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The pattern of fluctuations in the total biomass and species composition of phytoplankton in the shallow, eutrophic Loch Leven exhibits considerable inter-annual and within-year variability. Nevertheless, studies over the 18-year period reviewed here (1968–85) show that many of the observed changes can be explained in -terms of light regimes and the concentrations and fluxes of nutrients. On occasion, the incidence of fungal parasitism and of protozoan, rotiferan and crustacean grazing is also important. 2. Changes in annual mean algal biomass from very high levels in the late 1960s and early 1970s to somewhat lower levels in the late 1970s, followed by occasional high peaks in the present decade, are attributed to shifts in phosphorus loading-particularly from a P-rich industrial source. 3. In spite of complex and erratic sequences of algal species, seasonal patterns in the size distribution of the phytoplankton assemblage have been identified. However, these also changed. During the 4 years prior to 1971, Daphnia hyalina was not recorded in the plankton, and small algae have been abundant only in late winter or early spring. 4. The potential importance of the weather is highlighted as one of the possible causes of the irregular appearance of algal species. The effect of the characteristically variable, oceanicclimate of Northern Britain on this large (13.3 km2), shallow (z?= 3.9 m) loch is thought to be of particular importance. 5. The influence of the weather on phytoplankton sequences is explored by comparing records of monthly flushing rate values with time-series data on aspects of the aquatic environment and plankton populations. The preliminary assessment suggests that variation in flushing rate ( p ) has a considerable effect on temperature regimes and the supplies and in-loch dynamics of nutrients; through such changes, p controls major features of phytoplankton succession such as the temporal abundance of diatoms, as well as detailed sequences of events relating to the development and collapse of particular algal species - and. as a consequence, in some cases, of the animals preying on them. 6. Concluding remarks emphasize how little would have been understood about the functioning of shallow lakes, had the long-term commitment to Loch Leven research been abandoned. The view is also expressed that the findings are of considerably greater relevance to research on ‘classic’ stratifying lake systems, than the focus on the shallow waterbody might hitherto have suggested.  相似文献

Published and unpublished accounts of the zooplankton community of Loch Lomond are reviewed. Loch Lomond's zooplankton community is unique amongst those of Scotland's other large lochs. Holopedium gibberum appeared in Loch Lomond in the years between the studies of Slack & Hamilton in the 1950s and zooplankton surveys in the late 1970s.The annual cycles of Eudiaptomus gracilis, Cyclops strenuus abyssorum and Mesocyclops leuckarti are described for the mid basin of Loch Lomond. E. gracilis overwinter mainly as adult with variable egg production during their lifespan of 5–8 months. The cyclopoid copepods have variable life history characteristics. C. str. abyssorum produce a single generation per year, overwinter by means of resting eggs and a small population of planktonic adults, while M. leuckarti is present in the plankton throughout the year, but in low numbers during winter.Zooplankton populations in Loch Lomond are predated by the diverse fish community which includes a facultative planktivore in the powan, Coregonus lavaretus. Powan feed heavily on zooplankton from late spring until late autumn. Powan display selectivity in the prey species taken, in the size distribution and morph types taken within prey species. Plankton abundance time series were analysed with an emphasison the detection of interannual variability. These data coveredthe period 1988–1999 and were collected in the westernBay of Fundy, Canada as part of an ongoing regional monitoringprogram. The abundance observations considered here were obtainedfrom water samples at a single station (44°59.57'N, 66°44.36'W)and at four depths (0, 10, 25 and 50 m). The analysis was basedon log-transformed abundance of the taxonomic groups diatoms,dinoflagellates and zooplankton. The time-varying abundancelevel and its error variance were estimated using a statisticaltime series method designed for the identification of interannualvariability using irregularly sampled and noisy data. To thisend, plankton abundance measurements were fitted to a cyclicmodel using a Kalman filter and associated fixed interval smoother.Maximum likelihood procedures were used to determine all unknownsystem parameters. The model provided a good fit to these dataand allowed identification of year to year changes in the timingand magnitude of the annual abundance cycle. The greatest interannualvariability was found in the dinoflagellates and diatoms, withonly slight changes in the zooplankton. It was shown that whilethe annual cycle is readily determined from the observations,interannual variations were near the detection limit. For muchof the study period, plankton abundance was not statisticallydistinguishable from a fixed and repeating mean annual cycleat the 90% confidence level. However, during many time periodsdinoflagellates and diatoms, and to a lesser extent zooplankton,exhibited significant interannual variations in abundance. Aretrospective analysis of the monitoring program suggested thatto achieve robust detection of interannual abundance changes,the variability associated with the water sample based pointmeasurements must be decreased, either through replication,more frequent sampling, or alternative sampling methodologies.  相似文献

Movements of adult Atlantic salmon were determined as they migrated through Loch Faskally, a 4-km long hydroelectric reservoir in North-east Scotland. The horizontal and vertical movements of four salmon were monitored for periods of 4–7 days using depth-sensing acoustic transmitters in June–July 1995. Each fish began sustained directed upstream movements within 5·5 h after release at swimming speeds of 0·15–0·40 bl s−1. Three fish reached the head of the loch after 7·25–17 h, but then returned downstream. The four fish remained in the upper half of the loch for 15–51 days, making localized movements. Mean depths of fish were 3·7–4·0 m (max 20·7 m). Two fish were recorded at significantly shallower depths at night than during the day. Departure from the loch coincided with periods of high water flow into the reservoir. In May–July 1996, 17 radio-tagged salmon entered Loch Faskally and reached the head of the loch in 3 h–5·8 days (mean 39 h). The durations of stay in the loch varied from 3 h 50 min to 67·4 days (mean 10·9 days). Only two radio-tagged salmon left the loch under conditions of high water flow into the loch.  相似文献

The major patterns of geographical and seasonal variability of the plankton of the north-east Atlantic and the North Sea are described to provide the background to a presentation of the dominant patterns of year-to-year fluctuations in the abundance of the plankton of the area for the period 1948 to 1984. A feature of the variability is a marked similarity both between species and between areas. The main pattern of year-to-year change has the form of a quasi linear downward trend in abundance with, superimposed on this, an element of variability with a periodicity of about three years. There is a complex relationship between the plankton and an estimate of changes in the frequency of westerly weather which can be interpreted in terms of influences acting over limited periods of the seasonal cycle coupled with persistence in the stocks of zooplankton. Relationships between year-to-year variations in the abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton can be interpreted in terms of a response by the zooplankton to variations in food supply coupled with feed-back to the phytoplankton involving in situ nutrient regeneration.  相似文献

Ciliated protozoa accounted for up to 50% of the mean daily zooplankton biomass in McCloud Lake, a small (5 ha), oligotrophic, acidic (pH 4.7) lake in north-central Florida. Food resources (algae and bacterioplankton) were limiting for crustacean and rotifer zooplankton during much of the year. Myxotrophic ciliates were a dominant component of the planktonic food web. Stentor niger , an uncommon species in the plankton of lakes, dominated the ciliate assemblage and usually comprised >90% of total ciliate biomass. Stentor niger always contained high densities of photosynthetic zoochlorellae and contributed an estimated 30% to the total autotrophic biomass.  相似文献

An analysis of the stomach contents of 0+ and 1 + Atlantic salmon parr, Salmo salar , introduced into a Scottish hill loch showed that benthos, plankton, and surface organisms were all taken. Molluscs comprised a relatively small proportion of the food material, probably because they are less active than other animal groups. The most abundant plankter was Daphnia hyalina. Cyclops spp. were scarce and no Diaptomus spp. were present in the stomachs despite their abundance in the loch plankton. Laboratory experiments indicated that copepods were difficult to capture and that D. hyalina was the organism most frequently selected, even when larger individuals of this species were removed from the environment. Differences between the results from the Scottish loch and similar work in Wales, Sweden and Canada are discussed.  相似文献
