The spatial and temporal patterns of environmental heterogeneity in a Brazilian coastal lagoon were described by means of principal component analysis. Carapebus Lagoon has been subject to eutrophication, due to increased nutrient loading from domestic and industrial sewage. Spatial variations in the trophic state and temporal variations in the degree of marine influence are the major sources of environmental heterogeneity in this lagoon. The close and significant relation between total phosphorus and chlorophyll a (r2 = 60, p <0.05), and the high TN:TP ratios (up to 50:1) suggest that phosphorus might be the major nutrient controlling phytoplankton biomass in this lagoon. However, nitrogen might be more important as a growth-limiting nutrient in the eutrophic site of the lagoon, where high total phosphorus concentration (up to 338 μg l-1) and low TN:TP mass ratios (<10:1) were found. In a multiple regression model, total phosphorus and electric conductivity explained together a high and significant (R2=0.86, p < 0.001) amount of variance in chlorophyll yields. This predictive model of chlorophyll a is important as a tool for Carapebus lagoon management because it allows one to predict the algal biomass development of the lagoon in response to nutrients and marine water inputs resulting from man's activities. A coupled three-dimensional physical-biological model was developed in order to simulate the ecological functioning and potential impacts of land-derived inputs in the southwest lagoon of New Caledonia. This model considered pelagic biogeochemical cycling of organic matter, taking into account advection and diffusion processes driven mainly by local wind fields and freshwater discharges. Modeled phytoplankton dynamics were strongly correlated with both freshwater nutrient inputs and wind-driven hydrodynamic processes, the latter resulting in a large input of oceanic water from the southeast part of the lagoon under trade wind conditions. In situ data obtained during the summer (January 1998) under trade wind conditions supported predicted concentration gradients along several coast to reef transects and provided a validation of the coupled physical-biogeochemical model. An additional sensitivity analysis showed that the alteration of the biogeochemical parameters did not strongly affect the results of the model. Freshwater inputs of nutrients were simulated using a realistic scenario corresponding to the summer rainy season of 1997–1998 in New Caledonia. Despite occasional flooding events from the main rivers considered in these simulations, no significant meso-scale phytoplankton bloom was identified. Hydrodynamically driven dispersion and rapid uptake of nutrients by phytoplankton were sufficient to spatially constrain the impact of river inputs and maintain oligotrophic conditions. The fine spatial grid of our three-dimensional model demonstrated that eutrophication in the southwest lagoon of New Caledonia is confined to the most restricted coastal embayments, while most of the lagoon experiences sustained oligotrophic conditions.  相似文献

The Ria de Aveiro estuary-coastal lagoon system of northern Portugal is estimated to currently receive mean annual influxes of total nitrogen (N) and total phosphorus (P) of c. 6118 t y–1 and 779 t y–1, respectively, from its influent rivers. In low summer flows the mean N and P fluxes decrease to c. 10% of the annual average. The sewage contribution to the inland-derived N load on an annual basis is c. 5% but, during the summer low flow conditions, the sewage component increases to c. 65% of the total river loading. The sewage contribution to the inland-derived P load on an annual basis is c. 11% but, during the dry season, it is 1.2 times larger than the river-derived flux. The construction of a regional sewer system linked to a submarine outfall, due for completion in 2005, is expected to lead to a reduction in nutrient fluxes from inland to the lagoon of c. 15% for N and c. 26% for P relative to the present values. While this system will reduce the nutrient loading in the upper reaches of the lagoon, an increase in nutrients derived from the ocean is anticipated, due to the proximity of the outfall to the inlet.  相似文献

Diatom blooms in Thau lagoon are always related to rain events leading to inputs of inorganic nutrients such as phosphate, ammonium and nitrate through the watershed with time lags of about 1 week. In contrast, blooms of Alexandrium catenella/tamarense can occur following periods of 3 weeks without precipitation and no significant input of conventional nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate. Field results also indicate a significant drop (from 22–25 to 15–16 μM over 3 days) in dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) at the bloom peak, as well as a significant inverse relationship between A. catenella/tamarense cell density and DON concentrations that is not apparent for diatom blooms. Such dinoflagellate blooms are also associated with elevated (6–9 μM) ammonium concentrations, a curious feature also observed by other investigators, possibly the results of ammonium excretion by this organism during urea or other organic nitrogen assimilation.The potential use of DON by this organism represents short cuts in the nitrogen cycle between plants and nutrients and requires a new model for phytoplankton growth that is different from the classical diatom bloom model. In contrast to such diatom blooms that are due to conventional (nitrate, phosphate) nutrient pulses, Alexandrium catenella/tamarense blooms on the monthly time scale are due to organic nutrient enrichment, a feature that allows net growth rates of about 1.3 d−1, a value higher than that generally attributed to such organisms.  相似文献

采用植物生长箱溶液培养方式,对白三叶幼苗进行了不同光强(2个水平)和氮浓度(5个水平)处理,探讨其生长、生物量和光合生理特征对生境变化的响应.结果表明:两种光强下白三叶幼苗茎和叶生物量随氮素浓度呈先升高后降低,而根系生物量和根冠比则随氮素浓度增高而降低.光照强度降低使白三叶幼苗根、茎、叶和整株生物量分别降低67.8%、29.9%、42.5%和45.2%;低光处理使幼苗的根冠比显著下降,而比叶面积(SLA)明显提高.幼苗根系体积随氮素浓度增高而降低,高生长光强根系体积显著高于低生长光强下的白三叶.幼苗根系表面积、根系长度和根系直径随氮素浓度增加呈先增加后降低趋势,两种不同生长光强下幼苗根系长度和根系直径差异显著,而根系表面积差异不明显.白三叶叶片光合速率(Pn)随氮素浓度增加呈先增加后降低趋势,高生长光强白三叶Pn显著高于低生长光强下的白三叶.两种生长光强间叶片气孔导度(Gs),胞间CO2浓度(Ci)和蒸腾速率(Tr)无显著差异,但氮素浓度对叶片Gs、Ci和Tr均有显著影响.光、氮及其交互作用对白三叶幼苗生长发育产生了显著影响,光照不足和氮缺乏都将导致白三叶幼苗生长减弱,但幼苗对这些不利环境具有较强的调节和适应能力.  相似文献

HIV-1 IN is an essential enzyme for viral replication and an interesting target for the design of new pharmaceuticals for use in multidrug therapy of AIDS. L-731,988 is one of the most active molecules of the class of beta-diketo acids. Individual and combined mutations of HIV-1 IN at residues T66, S153, and M154 confer important degrees of resistance to one or more inhibitors belonging to this class. In an effort to understand the molecular mechanism of the resistance of T66I/M154I IN to the inhibitor L-731,988 and its specific binding modes, we have carried out docking studies, explicit solvent MD simulations, and binding free energy calculations. The inhibitor was docked against different protein conformations chosen from prior MD trajectories, resulting in 2 major orientations within the active site. MD simulations have been carried out for the T66I/M154I DM IN, DM IN in complex with L-731,988 in 2 different orientations, and 1QS4 IN in complex with L-731,988. The results of these simulations show a similar dynamical behavior between T66I/M154I IN alone and in complex with L-731,988, while significant differences are observed in the mobility of the IN catalytic loop (residues 138-149). Water molecules bridging the inhibitor to residues from the active site have been identified, and residue Gln62 has been found to play an important role in the interactions between the inhibitor and the protein. This work provides information about the binding modes of L-731,988, as well as insight into the mechanism of inhibitor-resistance in HIV-1 integrase.  相似文献

Rubidium (Rb) influxes via Na/K pump and ouabain-resistant pathways, and protein, RNA and DNA syntheses have been studied in human blood lymphocytes during the cell transit from quiescence to proliferation. In lymphocytes, stimulated either by phytohemagglutinin (PHA), phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate (PDBu) calcium ionophore, ionomycin, or by PDBu and interleukin-2 (IL-2), the late stages of the G0/G1-->S transit are accompanied by sustained 3-fold increased ouabain-sensitive Rb influxes. Using a two-pulse activation by a brief (1 h) PDBu/ionomycin treatment, followed by incubation with PDBu or IL-2 for 48 h, it has been found that both IL-2 and IL-2 receptor (IL-2R) are necessary for a long-term enhancement of Na/K pump. When present at the early stage of PDBu and ionomycin induction, cyclosporin A (CsA, 1 microgram/ml) inhibits the late increase in pump-mediated Rb influxes. However, when applied after the competence induction, CsA produced no effect on the flux increase at the progression stage. It is concluded that in activated human lymphocytes the functional expression of Na/K pump may by associated with IL-2-dependent progression of competent cells in the cell cycle.  相似文献

Decomposition is a large term in the global carbon budget, but models of the earth system that simulate carbon cycle‐climate feedbacks are largely untested with respect to litter decomposition. We tested the litter decomposition parameterization of the community land model version 4 (CLM4), the terrestrial component of the community earth system model, with data from the long‐term intersite decomposition experiment team (LIDET). The LIDET dataset is a 10‐year study of litter decomposition at multiple sites across North America and Central America. We performed 10‐year litter decomposition simulations comparable with LIDET for 9 litter types and 20 sites in tundra, grassland, and boreal, conifer, deciduous, and tropical forest biomes using the LIDET‐provided climatic decomposition index to constrain temperature and moisture effects on decomposition. We performed additional simulations with DAYCENT, a version of the CENTURY model, to ask how well an established ecosystem model matches the observations. The results show large discrepancy between the laboratory microcosm studies used to parameterize the CLM4 litter decomposition and the LIDET field study. Simulated carbon loss is more rapid than the observations across all sites, and nitrogen immobilization is biased high. Closer agreement with the observations requires much lower decomposition rates, obtained with the assumption that soil mineral nitrogen severely limits decomposition. DAYCENT better replicates the observations, for both carbon mass remaining and nitrogen, independent of nitrogen limitation. CLM4 has low soil carbon in global earth system simulations. These results suggest that this bias arises, in part, from too rapid litter decomposition. More broadly, the terrestrial biogeochemistry of earth system models must be critically tested with observations, and the consequences of particular model choices must be documented. Long‐term litter decomposition experiments such as LIDET provide a real‐world process‐oriented benchmark to evaluate models.  相似文献

Embryonic tissues and multicellular aggregates of adult cells mimic the behavior of highly viscous liquids. The liquid analogy helps to understand morphogenetic phenomena, such as cell sorting and tissue fusion, observed in developmental biology and tissue engineering. Tissue fusion is vital in tissue printing, an emergent technique based on computer-controlled deposition of tissue fragments and biocompatible materials. Computer simulations proved useful in predicting post-printing shape changes of tissue constructs. The simulation methods available to date, however, are unable to describe the time evolution of living systems made of millions of cells. The Lattice Boltzmann (LB) approach allows the implementation of interaction forces between the constituents of the system and yields time evolution in terms of distribution functions. With tissue engineering applications in mind, we have developed a finite difference Lattice Boltzmann model of a multicellular system and applied it to simulate the sidewise fusion of two contiguous cylinders made of cohesive cells and embedded in a medium (hydrogel). We have identified a biologically relevant range of model parameters. The proposed LB model may be extended to describe the time evolution of more complex multicellular structures such as sheets or tubes produced by tissue printing.  相似文献

Realistic studies of ion current in biologic channels present a major challenge for computer simulation approaches. All-atom molecular dynamics simulations involve serious time limitations that prevent their use in direct evaluation of ion current in channels with significant barriers. The alternative use of Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations can provide the current for simplified macroscopic models. However, the time needed for accurate calculations of electrostatic energies can make BD simulations of ion current expensive. The present work develops an approach that overcomes some of the above challenges and allows one to simulate ion currents in models of biologic channels. Our method provides a fast and reliable estimate of the energetics of the system by combining semimacroscopic calculations of the self-energy of each ion and an implicit treatment of the interactions between the ions, as well as the interactions between the ions and the protein-ionizable groups. This treatment involves the use of the semimacroscopic version of the protein dipole Langevin dipole (PDLD/S) model in its linear response approximation (LRA) implementation, which reduces the uncertainties about the value of the protein "dielectric constant." The resulting free energy surface is used to generate the forces for on-the-fly BD simulations of the corresponding ion currents. Our model is examined in a preliminary simulation of the ion current in the KcsA potassium channel. The complete free energy profile for a single ion transport reflects reasonable energetics and captures the effect of the protein-ionized groups. This calculated profile indicates that we are dealing with the channel in its closed state. Reducing the barrier at the gate region allows us to simulate the ion current in a reasonable computational time. Several limiting cases are examined, including those that reproduce the observed current, and the nature of the productive trajectories is considered. The ability to simulate the current in realistic models of ion channels should provide a powerful tool for studies of the biologic function of such systems, including the analysis of the effect of mutations, pH, and electric potentials.  相似文献

A pilot-scale deep bed denitrification filter using quartz sand as the filter media was operated under filtration velocity of 5.23 m/h. Nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and total nitrogen removal rates were relatively high at influent C/N ratios of 4:1 and 5:1. A model was developed using software to simulate the processes operating in the filter and improve the related parameters in the actual operations. The normalized sensitivity coefficient and the mean square sensitivity measure were used for the sensitivity analysis. Results showed that the stoichiometric parameters were the most sensitive, which were related to methylotrophs and biofilm. Measured data were consistent with the simulations. Moreover, the order of significance of factors affecting nitrate nitrogen removal was as follows: influent chemical oxygen demand, influent nitrate nitrogen, and hydraulic retention time. Last, the denitrification dynamic model was obtained at influent C/N ratio of 5:1.

This paper investigated the spatio-temporal variability of water quality parameters (transparency, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients viz. NH3-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, PO43-P, total nitrogen, total phosphorous and chlorophyll-a) in Chilika lagoon during 2001–2003 in order to better understand its ecological characteristics. Marked spatial and seasonal variations were detected with respect to almost all parameters studied. Northern sector of the lagoon is more affected by the anthropogenic stress from the catchments than the southern sector. Addition of nitrogen and phosphorous compounds to the lagoon mainly occurred through the drainage from agricultural lands and river run off during the early months of paddy cultivating seasons. Phytoplankton productivity of the lagoon was nitrogen limited, as suggested by nitrogen to phosphorous ratio. Processes affecting the water quality of the lagoon system included agricultural drainage, sewage intrusion, macrophyte litter fall and exchange of water between lagoon and the sea (Bay of Bengal). Further in depth study pertaining to quantification of exogenous material input and their disposal is recommended to ensure proper management of the lagoon and its resources.  相似文献

Coastal lagoons are semi-isolated ecosystems exposed to wide fluctuations of environmental conditions and showing habitat fragmentation. These features may play an important role in separating species into different populations, even at small spatial scales. In this study, we evaluate the concordance between mitochondrial (previous published data) and nuclear data analyzing the genetic variability of Pomatoschistus marmoratus in five localities, inside and outside the Mar Menor coastal lagoon (SE Spain) using eight microsatellites. High genetic diversity and similar levels of allele richness were observed across all loci and localities, although significant genic and genotypic differentiation was found between populations inside and outside the lagoon. In contrast to the F ST values obtained from previous mitochondrial DNA analyses (control region), the microsatellite data exhibited significant differentiation among samples inside the Mar Menor and between lagoonal and marine samples. This pattern was corroborated using Cavalli-Sforza genetic distances. The habitat fragmentation inside the coastal lagoon and among lagoon and marine localities could be acting as a barrier to gene flow and contributing to the observed genetic structure. Our results from generalized additive models point a significant link between extreme lagoonal environmental conditions (mainly maximum salinity) and P. marmoratus genetic composition. Thereby, these environmental features could be also acting on genetic structure of coastal lagoon populations of P. marmoratus favoring their genetic divergence. The mating strategy of P. marmoratus could be also influencing our results obtained from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. Therefore, a special consideration must be done in the selection of the DNA markers depending on the reproductive strategy of the species.  相似文献

Kinetic models for microbial growth describe the specific growth rate (mu) as a function of the concentration of the growth-limiting nutrient (s) and a set of parameters. A typical example is the model proposed by Monod, where mu is related to s using substrate affinity (Ks) and the maximum specific growth rate (mu max). The preferred method to determine such parameters is to grow microorganisms in continuous culture and to measure the concentration of the growth-limiting substrate as a function of the dilution rate. However, owing to the lack of analytical methods to quantify sugars in the microgram per litre range, it has not been possible to investigate the growth kinetics of Escherichia coli in chemostat culture. Using an HPLC method able to determine steady-state concentrations of reducing sugars, we previously have shown that the Monod model adequately describes glucose-limited growth of E. coli ML30. This has not been confirmed for any other sugar. Therefore, we carried out a similar study with galactose and found steady-state concentrations between 18 and 840 micrograms.L-1 for dilution rates between 0.2 and 0.8.h-1, respectively. With these data the parameters of several models giving the specific growth rate as a function of the substrate concentration were estimated by nonlinear parameter estimation, and subsequently, the models were evaluated statistically. From all equations tested, the Monod model described the data best. The parameters for galactose utilisation were mu max = 0.75.h-1 and Ks = 67 micrograms.L-1. The results indicated that accurate Ks values can be estimated from a limited set of steady-state data when employing mu max measured during balanced growth in batch culture. This simplified procedure was applied for maltose, ribose, and fructose. For growth of E. coli with these sugars, mu max and Ks were for maltose 0.87.h-1, 100 micrograms.L-1; for ribose 0.57.h-1, 132 micrograms.L-1, and for fructose 0.70.h-1, 125 micrograms.L-1.  相似文献

为确定兔眼蓝浆果( Vaccinium ashei Reade)不同品种苗期的适宜施氮量,以兔眼蓝浆果早熟品种‘阿拉帕哈’(‘Alapha’)、中熟品种‘园蓝’(‘Gardenblue’)和晚熟品种‘芭尔德温’(‘Baldwin’)的组培苗为实验材料,采用水培法研究了不同氮浓度(0、1、2和4 mmol·L-1)对幼苗生长、根和叶中全氮含量、叶片光合生理特性的影响。结果表明:与对照(0 mmol·L-1氮)相比,经1、2和4 mmol·L-1氮处理后3个兔眼蓝浆果品种的单株茎叶干质量显著增加,根冠比显著降低;但品种‘园蓝’的单株根干质量显著高于对照,另2个品种的单株根干质量与对照无显著差异。随着营养液中氮浓度的提高,3个兔眼蓝浆果品种根的全氮含量及品种‘阿拉帕哈’叶的全氮含量均逐渐增加,且在4 mmol·L-1氮处理下最高;品种‘园蓝’和‘芭尔德温’叶的全氮含量呈先升高后降低的趋势,且均在2 mmol·L-1氮处理下最高;各处理组根和叶的全氮含量均显著高于对照。经1、2和4 mmol·L-1氮处理后,3个兔眼蓝浆果品种叶片的叶绿素a、叶绿素b和总叶绿素含量以及PSⅡ最大光化学效率( Fv/Fm )均呈先升高后降低的趋势,且均显著高于对照。各处理组中,品种‘园蓝’叶片的净光合速率( Pn)、气孔导度( Gs)、胞间CO2浓度( Ci)和蒸腾速率( Tr)均显著高于对照;品种‘芭尔德温’叶片的Pn值在4 mmol·L-1氮处理下显著低于对照,Gs和Tr值在2 mmol·L-1氮处理下显著高于对照,Ci值与对照无显著差异;与对照相比,品种‘阿拉帕哈’叶片的Pn值在1和4 mmol·L-1氮处理下显著提高,Gs值在1 mmol·L-1氮处理下显著提高,Tr值在1和2 mmol·L-1氮处理下显著提高,而Ci值则在4 mmol·L-1氮处理下显著降低。综合分析结果显示:适度增施氮肥可提高兔眼蓝浆果不同品种幼苗的茎叶生长、改善其光合性能,但对根系生长无明显的促进作用。在营养生长期兔眼蓝浆果不同品种的需氮量存在差异,其中品种‘园蓝’更适宜高氮环境,而施用少量氮肥即可促进品种‘芭尔德温’和‘阿拉帕哈’幼苗地上部分生长。  相似文献

D-Glucose is the major substrate for energy metabolism in peripheral nerve. The mechanism of transfer of glucose across the blood-nerve barrier is unclarified. In this study an in situ perfusion technique was utilized, in anesthetized rats, to examine monosaccharide transport from blood into peripheral nerve. Unidirectional influxes of D-[14C]glucose, L-[14C]glucose, and [14C]3-O-methyl-D-glucose across capillaries of the tibial nerve were measured at different perfusate concentrations of unlabelled D-glucose. The permeability-surface area product (PA) for D-[14C]glucose and [14C]3-O-methyl-D-glucose decreased, whereas the PA for L-[14C]glucose remained constant, as the perfusate concentration of D-glucose was increased. In the presence of no added unlabelled D-glucose in the perfusate, the PA for L-[14C]glucose equaled one-fifth the PA for D-[14C]glucose. These results demonstrate self-saturation, competitive inhibition, and stereospecificity of glucose transfer, and for the first time show a unidirectional facilitated transport mechanism for D-monosaccharides at capillaries of mammalian peripheral nerve. The data were fit to a model for facilitated transport and passive diffusion. The half-saturation constant and maximal rate of transport for the saturable component of D-glucose influx equaled 23 +/- 11 mumol X ml-1 and 6.6 +/- 3.2 X 10(-3) mumol X s-1 X g-1, respectively. The constant of nonsaturable glucose influx equaled 0.5 +/- 0.1 X 10(-4) s-1. The changes of natural sensitivity in terms of lagoon morphometry, particularly the inlet morphometry and flushing properties of the Koggala lagoon, Sri Lanka, are presented in this paper. The morphometric assessment is based on analysis and consideration of morphometric characteristics for three scenarios of the lagoon, namely: (1) before the construction of the old groyne system or time period before 1996 (Koggala Scenario 1—KS1); (2) existing situation or time period after 2007 (Koggala Scenario 2—KS2); and (3) future scenario with respect to proposed groyne interventions for the mouth width of 20 m, as proposed by Gunaratne et al. (J Environ Sci 22(6):813–819, 2010) (Koggala Scenario 3—KS3). The morphometric assessment provides a simple means of defining natural sensitivity or vulnerability of individual scenarios of Koggala lagoon to external loads and anthropogenic activities. We found that KS1 and KS3 scenarios are relatively more sensitive than KS2, whereas KS1 has the highest natural sensitivity, and KS2 has the lowest natural sensitivity or the most robust conditions. In quantifying the tidal flushing of Koggala lagoon, the concept of flushing half-life (T 50% h) was adapted as the optimum measure of flushing time. Flushing half-life was calculated for KS2 and KS3 scenarios. The flushing half-life ranges from 9 to 37 h (1.5 days) for KS2 and from 12 to 72 h (3 days) for KS3. Flushing half-life suggests that the exchange rate between the lagoon and the ocean is controlled by the balance between fresh water inflow and the seawater inflow. Applications of the morphometric classification and flushing half-life presented in this article can be used to help guide management and policy-making decisions for the coastal environment of Koggala lagoon and other coastal water bodies of Sri Lanka.  相似文献

Unidirectional influxes of sugars and Na from muscosal solution into the cells of rabbit ileum have been examined. The influxes of glucose, galactose, and 3-0-methyl glucose (3 MG) follow Michaelis-Menten type kinetics and are markedly dependent on the presence ofNa in the mucosal solution. For 3 MG, reduction of Na concentration causes a decrease in maximal rate of influx and little change in the "apparent Michaelis constant." There appeared to be little mediated entry of 3 MG into the cells from Na-free solution. The influx of Na was increased by the presence of 3 MG in the mucosal solution and at all Na concentrations tested, there was a 1:1 ratio between sugar influx and the sugar-dependent Na influx. The Mar Menor is a sheltered and hypersaline lagoon, with salinity ranges between 38 and 51 psu. The lagoon is threatened by several pressures and in the last decades detrimental impact on the natural community structure and dynamics have increased. In the watershed, agricultural practices are rapidly evolving from extensive dry crop farming to intensively irrigated crops, with increasing loads of nutrient and pollutants to the lagoon. Hydrological conditions, nutrients and chlorophyll a concentrations were analysed in 1997 and 2002–2003 in a grid of 20 stations in the lagoon. Different time scales, from daily to inter-annual, were considered. In the considered periods, the dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) increased whilst phosphate decreased significantly. These contrasting patterns depended upon the increased agricultural loading for DIN and were due to the implementation of the wastewater works for phosphates. In 1997 and 2002, the highest nitrate concentrations were usually found on the west coast of the lagoon, close to the mouths of the main watercourses. In parallel, the lowest concentrations were detected at the inner coastline along “La Manga” sandy bar and “El Estacio” channel. Based on weekly data, correlations between chlorophyll a concentrations and environmental variables disagreed with traditional eutrophication models. Relationships between chlorophyll a and nutrients were negative, suggesting that in the short term phytoplankton controlled nutrient concentrations. Moreover, nitrate and phosphorous seemed to alternate as limiting factors. The relationships between chlorophyll a became positive when considering time lags and analysed at longer time scales (monthly or seasonal means), thus suggesting a very rapid response of primary producers to nutrient enrichment. A significant correlation between chlorophyll a concentration and fish larvae density was also found at all time scales analysed, suggesting a top-down control of the trophic web.  相似文献
