Implementation of the Water Framework Directive requires tools for measuring and monitoring the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems. Several indices are in use in the Iberian Peninsula, although there has been little comparison among them. We sampled the fish assemblage and limnological features of the Tordera stream (NE Spain) quarterly from September 2001 to May 2003 to evaluate the usefulness of several fish metrics and to compare habitat quality and biotic indices currently in use. Data for eight biotic and abiotic indices for this and three other Catalan river basins were also compiled in order to analyse the relationships among indices. In the Tordera stream, fish abundance and richness increased with stream order except in the last sampling site that had the lowest fish abundance owing to the effects of drought and water abstraction. Although most indices were positively correlated, some displayed low or null correlations particularly for the Tordera basin which is more affected by water abstraction and less by pollution; a commonly used physico-chemical index (ISQA) was the least correlated. In a regional fish index (IBICAT) under development, the brown trout (Salmo trutta) has been previously considered as introduced in the Tordera basin. Here, we report an old published record that demonstrates that trout was present before 1845 and we argue that its status should be considered as uncertain given the current information available. Whether brown trout is treated as native or introduced to this river basin has profound effects on the results of fish metrics because of its dominance in the upper reaches. We briefly discuss the role of introduced species, particularly in headwater streams, in the development of fish indices. Poor water quality is discussed as a major factor causing a decline of brown trout populations in Swiss rivers. For our study we have chosen a river in the Swiss midlands, where the brown trout population has decreased dramatically during the last 10 yr and where feral fish have shown distinctive pathological alterations. The objective of our study was to investigate whether river water may be responsible for impaired fish health leading to an increased mortality in the river. In an active monitoring program, groups of brown and rainbow trout were exposed to polluted river water for 24 mo. Fish held in tap water served as a reference. Mortality, macroscopic and histopathologic changes, and infectious agents were investigated. Compared with the reference group, high mortality rates and severe pathological alterations of the inner organs were observed in fish held in river water. Especially gills, liver and kidney of these fish showed significantly higher changes than fish from tap water. These changes were dominated by degenerative and inflammatory reactions. Additionally, several infectious agents were diagnosed in fish exposed to river water. The most important findings were furunculosis and proliferative kidney disease. Brown trout seemed to be more sensitive than rainbow trout to environmental stress and infectious agents.  相似文献

Direct counts of fish obtained by night spotlighting were compared with species composition and population estimates obtained from three-pass electrofishing obtained across 29 sites along small clear streams in the Otago region of New Zealand. The influence of habitat variables on the relative efficiency of each method was also examined. The same seven species of fishes were identified by both methods. Juvenile brown trout Salmo trutta were the only species present in sufficient numbers to allow comparison of abundance estimates using the two methods. A total of 777 brown trout were counted by spotlight and 803 brown trout were caught using electrofishing. Estimates of abundance obtained by spotlighting reflected population estimates obtained by three-pass electrofishing across most habitats. Electrofishing produced higher population estimates relative to spotlighting in fast-flowing turbulent riffle habitats, whereas counts obtained by spotlighting tended to be higher relative to electrofishing in slow-flowing pool habitats. The results suggest that spotlighting is an effective method for assessing fish composition and brown trout abundance in small clear water streams, although the extremes of water velocity may influence efficiency of both spotlighting and electrofishing.  相似文献

In freshwater streams, flooding is a typical source of natural disturbance that plays a key role in the dynamics of animal populations and communities. However, habitat degradation and fish stocking might increase the severity of its impact. We tested the effects of a flash flood on the abundance of three size classes of headwater dwelling Alpine bullhead, Cottus poecilopus, in the streams of the Carpathian Mountains in the Czech Republic, that are stocked with hatchery‐reared brown trout, Salmo trutta. We showed that the overall abundance of Alpine bullhead was highest at the sites with the least degraded habitat (i.e., natural habitat) and we caught almost no Alpine bullhead at the sites with the most degraded habitat. The flash flood had a strong negative effect on the abundance of the largest individuals of Alpine bullhead. Abundance of small and medium size Alpine bullhead was negatively affected by the abundance of adult stocked brown trout before as well as after the flash flood. However, negative effect of adult brown trout abundance on abundance of large Alpine bullhead was not significant before the flash flood, and it became significant after the flash flood. This could indicate an accumulation of negative impacts of trout stocking and flash flood on this size class. Overall, our results suggest that stocking of hatchery trout and habitat degradation can reinforce the impact of flash floods on the population of Alpine bullhead in the streams of the Carpathian Mountains.  相似文献

Growth and maximum size of stream fishes can be highly variable across populations. For salmonid fishes in streams, individuals from populations confined to headwater streams often exhibit small size at maturity in comparison to populations with access to main-stem rivers. Differences in prey size, prey availability, and metabolic constraints based on temperature may explain patterns of maximum size and growth. In this study, cutthroat trout from headwater stream populations that were isolated above a waterfall were compared to individuals from populations in similar sized streams without a movement barrier and from large main-stem rivers. Cutthroat trout from smaller streams with or without a movement barrier were significantly smaller at a given age than fish from main-stem rivers, where individuals were able to achieve a much larger maximum size. Comparisons of invertebrate drift abundance and size in the three types of streams revealed that drift size did not differ between stream categories, but was highest per volume of water in large main-stem rivers. Across all stream types, prey abundance declined from summer to fall. Temperature declined over the course of the season in a similar manner across all stream types, but remained relatively high later in the season in main-stem river habitats. Prey availability and temperature conditions in main-stem rivers may provide more optimal growing conditions for fish as individuals increase in size and become constrained by prey availability and temperature conditions in small streams. Maintaining connectivity between small spawning and rearing tributary streams and main-stem river habitats may be critical in maintaining large-bodied populations of stream salmonids.  相似文献

1. The ability of many introduced fish species to thrive in degraded aquatic habitats and their potential to impact on aquatic ecosystem structure and function suggest that introduced fish may represent both a symptom and a cause of decline in river health and the integrity of native aquatic communities. 2. The varying sensitivities of many commonly introduced fish species to degraded stream conditions, the mechanism and reason for their introduction and the differential susceptibility of local stream habitats to invasion because of the environmental and biological characteristics of the receiving water body, are all confounding factors that may obscure the interpretation of patterns of introduced fish species distribution and abundance and therefore their reliability as indicators of river health. 3. In the present study, we address the question of whether alien fish (i.e. those species introduced from other countries) are a reliable indicator of the health of streams and rivers in south‐eastern Queensland, Australia. We examine the relationships of alien fish species distributions and indices of abundance and biomass with the natural environmental features, the biotic characteristics of the local native fish assemblages and indicators of anthropogenic disturbance at a large number of sites subject to varying sources and intensities of human impact. 4. Alien fish species were found to be widespread and often abundant in south‐eastern Queensland rivers and streams, and the five species collected were considered to be relatively tolerant to river degradation, making them good candidate indicators of river health. Variation in alien species indices was unrelated to the size of the study sites, the sampling effort expended or natural environmental gradients. The biological resistance of the native fish fauna was not concluded to be an important factor mediating invasion success by alien species. Variation in alien fish indices was, however, strongly related to indicators of disturbance intensity describing local in‐stream habitat and riparian degradation, water quality and surrounding land use, particularly the amount of urban development in the catchment. 5. Potential confounding factors that may influence the likelihood of introduction and successful establishment of an alien species and the implications of these factors for river bioassessment are discussed. We conclude that the potentially strong impact that many alien fish species can have on the biological integrity of natural aquatic ecosystems, together with their potential to be used as an initial basis to find out other forms of human disturbance impacts, suggest that some alien species (particularly species from the family Poeciliidae) can represent a reliable ‘first cut’ indicator of river health.  相似文献

Huge efforts have been made during the past decades to improve the water quality and to restore the physical habitat of rivers and streams in western Europe. This has led to an improvement in biological water quality and an increase in fish stocks in many countries. However, several rheophilic fish species such as brown trout are still categorized as vulnerable in lowland streams in Flanders (Belgium). In order to support cost‐efficient restoration programs, habitat suitability modeling can be used. In this study, we developed an ensemble of habitat suitability models using metaheuristic algorithms to explore the importance of a large number of environmental variables, including chemical, physical, and hydromorphological characteristics to determine the suitable habitat for reintroduction of brown trout in the Zwalm River basin (Flanders, Belgium), which is included in the Habitats Directive. Mean stream velocity, water temperature, hiding opportunities, and presence of pools or riffles were identified as the most important variables determining the habitat suitability. Brown trout mainly preferred streams with a relatively high mean reach stream velocity (0.2–1 m/s), a low water temperature (7–15°C), and the presence of pools. The ensemble of models indicated that most of the tributaries and headwaters were suitable for the species. Synthesis and applications. Our results indicate that this modeling approach can be used to support river management, not only for brown trout but also for other species in similar geographical regions. Specifically for the Zwalm River basin, future restoration of the physical habitat, removal of the remaining migration barriers and the development of suitable spawning grounds could promote the successful restoration of brown trout.  相似文献

Using a large pan-European dataset, we compared least disturbed sites to sites impacted by human pressures across broad river types to assess which aspects of bio-ecological traits of the fish assemblage are most sensitive to alterations of the river ecosystem. To control for variation across river types and large-scale environmental gradients, we began by clustering the least disturbed sites (n = 716) into four homogenous fish assemblage types (FATs) differing by four fish metrics, i.e., lithophilic, rheophilic, omnivorous, and potamodromous fish. We predicted these FATs (headwater streams, medium gradient rivers, lowland rivers, and Mediterranean streams) using environmental variables, i.e., altitude, river slope, temperature, precipitation, latitude, and longitude for impacted sites in our dataset (n = 2,389). Using tests of sensitivity and intensity, 17 fish metrics showed a clear reaction to human pressures. However, 12 metrics responded exclusively within only one of the four FATs. Hence we observed a divergent reaction of fish metrics to human pressures in, e.g., headwater versus lowland rivers. Type-specific reactions are useful in customizing impact assessment for particular river types. It is of primary importance to understand the comparative sensitivity and efficiency of fish-based indicators of water quality for detecting human-induced degradation of river ecosystems.  相似文献

Life-history effects of migratory costs in anadromous brown trout   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Mean size of sexually mature anadromous brown trout (sea trout) Salmo trutta in south-east Norway increased significantly with migratory distance ( D ) between the feeding area at sea and the spawning area in fresh water, from 32 cm for those spawning close to the river mouth to 43 cm at the spawning grounds 40 km inland. This was largely due to an increased size of the smallest anadromous spawners with increasing D . The raised mean size of the long-distance migrants is paralleled by an increased age at sexual maturity. Body mass at the same length of sea trout decreased with D in fresh water, meaning that the fish moving far inland was slimmer than those spawning near the coast. Gonadal mass of first-time spawning anadromous males declined significantly with D , and the fecundity and the ratio of fecundity over mean mass of the individual eggs adjusted for variation in fish mass, increased with D . There was no clear relationship between the ratio of anadromous to resident fish and D , probably because more variables than D , influence this relationship in the study streams.  相似文献

Strontium was determined in trout scales from a river where it is often difficult to distinguish between sea trout and resident brown trout by coloration or other visual marks. Sr values were compared with values in scales from brown trout caught above the anadromous stretch of the same river and in scales from a river where sea trout coloration is typical. In the first river, the Sr concentration was generally low, and as a mean only 50 ppm higher in scales from individuals classified as sea trout from the anadromous stretch than in brown trout scales from the upper stretch. There was no consistency between fish coloration and Sr concentration in scales from presumed sea trout on the anadromous stretch. Individuals with a typical sea trout coloration could have a lower concentration of Sr than individuals that were classified as uncertain sea trout by coloration. Fish weight did not seem to influence Sr levels. The mean Sr concentration in scales from the typical sea trout colored population in the second river was 2.8 times higher than that of the anadromous part of the first river. The high variability of Sr concentration in sea trout scales may be explained by differences in individual and population life history. The Sr levels reflect differences in saltwater exposure, either expressed by length of stay or concentration of salt in marine habitats. The study has shown that fish coloration is an inadequate mean to distinguish between resident and migratory trout. Nor is Sr determination of scales alone sufficient, because of low inter-group and high intra-group variability in some rivers. However, Sr values can give valuable information on individual and population migration on a large scale.  相似文献

Fingerlings of brown trout ( Salmo trulta m. fario L.) were introduced to sections of different types of streams situated in natural catchments and those modified by Man's activity. At stations where environmental conditions were modified by such forms of impact as pollution, flow variability and impoundment, trout did not survive 5 months. In the natural river sections mortality rates increased downstream along the river continuum and were associated with increased predation. Growth rates in the upper reaches were primarily restricted by abiotic factors—temperature and trophic status: however, they were to a large extent modified by density-dependent regulation and intraspecific competition. The influence of the abiotic/biotic regulatory process, expressed as fish metabolic performance, is discussed as a framework for the determination of the carrying capacity of the riverine ecosystem.  相似文献

Studies on assemblages of freshwater fishes along elevational gradients of rivers are lacking, even in Europe. In this paper we have explored the entire range of elevational gradients existing in the European part of Russia. We analyzed how fish biodiversity (species richness, abundance, diversity indices) at 435 river sites differed by elevation. The impact of elevation on the distribution of freshwater fish species was analyzed using regression and ordination methods. For the first time for a large area of Eastern Europe, optimum points and niche breadth for fish species along altitude gradients were estimated. Our analyses showed: (1) species richness and Shannon index decreased in the upper part of the gradient; fish abundance showed a unimodal response to elevation; highest numbers were found at elevations between 250 and 500 m; (2) ordination analysis demonstrated an upstream-downstream gradient of the fish assemblages; (3) regression analysis showed significant preferences for elevation by 19 species, all of which were monotonic; (4) optimum and niche breadth (tolerance) were highly variable between species; only five species (brown trout, grayling, common minnow, bullhead and stone loach) were encountered at elevations above 650 m; and (5) in our region, the habitat of grayling was higher in the mountains, and its abundance (numbers) at extreme elevations was greater, than brown trout. These results show how fish assemblages differ with elevation. Our findings identify the data that can be used for regional environmental monitoring of the state of small rivers and for aquatic conservation.  相似文献

Ferox trout are large, long-lived, piscivorous trout normally found in deep lakes; they are highly prized by trophy anglers. Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, Western Ireland, have recorded the majority of Irish specimen ferox trout since angling records began. Little was known regarding the spawning location of ferox trout relative to sympatric brown trout, and a radio telemetry study was initiated in both catchments in 2005. Over the period 2005–2009, 79 ferox were captured by angling and radio tagged in Lough Corrib, while 55 ferox were tagged in Lough Mask. Manual and helicopter tracking were carried out on all spawning streams entering both lakes over the autumn/winter period to detect tagged fish. Overall, 37 radio-tagged trout (46.8%) were detected in Lough Corrib streams and 21 tagged trout (38.2%) were recorded from Lough Mask streams. Results from radio tracking indicate that the majority (92%) of ferox trout tagged in Lough Corrib spawned in a single spawning stream, the Cong river, while the majority (76%) of ferox trout tagged in Lough Mask spawned in the Cong canal and Cong river. These results suggest that these streams are most likely the principle spawning locations of ferox trout in both lakes. The occurrence of ferox trout predominantly in single spawning rivers in both catchments highlights the vulnerability of the study ferox populations. As a result of these findings, conservation measures were introduced for ferox trout in both catchments.  相似文献

The effect of the introduction of fry of anadromous sea trout, Salmo trutta L., on the genetic integrity of landlocked brown trout populations was evaluated. Samples were taken from six brown trout populations from streams above impassable waterfalls in the Conwy river system (North Wales, U.K.) in 1989 and 1990. Three of these streams had no known stocking history and three had been stocked with sea trout fry from the lower Conwy system over the last few years. Representatives of these sea trout were collected from two streams in the lower Conwy system and from a hatchery. Allele frequencies at 13 loci, six of which were polymorphic, were determined by starch gel electrophoresis.
The stocked populations were intermediate in their allele frequencies between unstocked brown trout and sea trout samples. A principal component analysis suggested significant numbers of hybrids in all of the stocked streams. This shows that some of the introduced sea trout did not migrate down the falls to the sea, but stayed in fresh water and hybridized with the local population. The significance of this finding for the conservation of the genetic resource of brown trout stocks is discussed.  相似文献

Small Mediterranean streams are shaped by predictable seasonal events of flooding and drying over an annual cycle, and present a strong inter and intra-annual variation in flow regime. Native fish assemblages in these streams are adapted to this natural environmental variability. The distinction of human-induced disturbances from the natural ones is thus a crucial step before assessing the ecological status of these streams. In this aim, the present study evaluates the effects of natural hydrological variability on fish assemblages from disturbed and least disturbed sites in small intermittent streams of south Portugal. Data were collected over the last two decades (1996–2011) in 14 sites located in the Guadiana and Sado river basins. High variability of fish assemblages was strongly dependent on human-induced disturbances, particularly nutrient/organic load and sediment load, and on natural hydrological variability. Natural hydrological variability can act jointly with anthropogenic disturbances, producing changes on fish assemblages structure of small intermittent streams. In least disturbed sites, despite the natural disturbances caused by inter-annual rainfall variations (including drought and flood events), fish assemblages maintained a long-term stability and revealed a high resilience. On the contrary, disturbed sites presented significantly higher variability on fish assemblages and a short and long-term instability, reflecting a decrease on the resistance and resilience of fish assemblages. Under these conditions, fish fauna integrity is particularly vulnerable and the ecological assessment may be influenced by natural hydrological variations. High hydrological variability (especially if it entails high frequency of dryer years and meaningful cumulative water deficit) may affect the impact of the human pressures with significant and consistent consequences on fish assemblage composition and integrity. In this study, fish metrics that maximize the detection of human degradation and minimize the response to natural variability were based on the relative abundance of native species (insectivorous species, eurytopic species, water column species, native lithophilic species), relative abundance of species with intermediate tolerance and relative number of exotic species. Results highlight the importance of assessing temporal variability on stream biomonitoring programs and emphasize the need to improve the assessment tools, accounting for long-term changes in fish assemblages, namely by selecting the most appropriate fish metrics that respond to anthropogenic disturbances but exhibit low natural temporal variability, essential both in the characterization of the biological reference conditions and in the development of fish indexes in intermittent streams.  相似文献

1. The effect of habitat fragmentation on freshwater species has been addressed using brown trout Salmo trutta L. as a model species with a dendritic population structure. 2. Microsatellite loci were employed as molecular markers. Levels of gene flow and population subdivision were determined in more than 1200 brown trout individuals inhabiting four south European rivers with contrasting patterns of fragmentation, defined by the presence of barriers. 3. The genetic units in the four rivers were restricted by artificial barriers, and gene flow among samples within each river was associated with the level of fragmentation of the river. 4. Loss of genetic diversity and dislocation of the dendritic model have been detected in fragmented rivers. These results emphasise the importance of mitigating the impact of dams by constructing passages to restore gene flow along the river, for fish and other migratory species, as well as the need for caution in relation to stocking in isolated areas to avoid problems of inbreeding.  相似文献

Brown trout Salmo trutta is one of the most valuable species inhabiting river drainages in Galicia (northwestern Spain). The influence of man, through overfishing and pollution, is thought to have caused the decline of trout in Galician rivers. To balance the possible population decline, Galician rivers have been stocked extensively with a brown trout stock of German origin during the last 30 years. In this study, the incidence of stocking practices has been investigated by an LDH-5 * genetic marker. A very low number of stocked individuals have been observed within river populations, despite the long period of repopulation. Only eight out of the 44 populations analysed showed a limited number of individuals of hatchery origin. Most stocked individuals detected were 0+ age, and showed a poor condition factor ( K < 1). Environmental factors (muscular stamina and food habits) and genetic factors (different selective conditions in hatchery medium) are invoked to explain the low viability of hatchery fish Observed in this Study.  相似文献

Complete sequencing of the mitochondrial control region was used to describe phylogenetic relationships of brown trout populations (Salmo trutta) in the Mediterranean river basins of Iberia and to review the historical biogeography of trout from the Mediterranean regions. Phylogenetic relationships among trout lineages suggested that the Danubian one is the most ancestral, in accordance with the eastern origin of most of the European freshwater fish species. Nested-clade and mismatch analyses suggested that the present distribution of haplotypes of the Adriatic and Mediterranean lineages resulted from population expansions originated, respectively, from central and western Europe, which favoured extensive secondary contacts between lineages. Reduced diversity detected within 50% of the analysed populations and large intrabasin differentiation indicated restricted gene flow in post-glacial periods.  相似文献

Declines in the number of anadromous brown trout in the Karup River in Denmark, due to environmental degradation, led to the stocking of large numbers of hatchery trout during the 1980s. This practice was gradually replaced by stocking with the offspring of electrofished local trout The genetic contribution of the hatchery fish to the current population of anadromous trout in the river was estimated by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of mitochondrial DNA, using seven restriction endonucleases. Fish from the hatchery strain as well as from five locations in the river system, and from a further unstocked river were screened. Eight haplotypes were observed. The distribution and frequencies of the observed haplotypes revealed little genetic differentiation among stocked populations. The hatchery strain differed significantly from the stocked populations. One haplotype which was found at a high frequency in the hatchery strain was almost absent from the stocked populations. This suggests that the genetic contribution of the hatchery trout to the current population is much less than would be expected from the number of stocked fish. The possible reasons for the failure of the hatchery trout to contribute to the gene pool, and also the implications for conservation biology, are discussed.  相似文献

The status of brown and rainbow trout as hosts of Pomphorhynchus laevis was studied in the field and by means of laboratory investigations. Field data indicated that rainbow trout might belong to the group of preferred hosts of P. laevis , whereas brown trout belonged to the group in which the parasite achieved less than optimal growth and maturation. This was confirmed by laboratory infections. In rainbow trout P. laevis attained up to three times the growth rate in brown trout and maturation occurred whereas in brown trout establishment was lower, growth slower and no parasites matured. Changes in the behaviour of infected Gammarus pulex induced by the presence of P. laevis cystacanths were such as to render the shrimps more vulnerable to predation by trout and other surface and mid-water feeding fish, and selective predation upon infeged G. pulex by fish was demonstrated. nvestigations into the stimuli necessary for eversion of cystacanths of P. laevis revealed that the most important factor was a non-specific component of bile, and it was concluded that cystacanths were likely to evert in any species of fish. Recognition of the different status of brown and rainbow trout as hosts of P. laevis still fails to explain some peculiarities in the distribution of the parasite in the British Isles, where in Britain it occurs in trout in only one river but in Ireland in all rivers throughout the country. It is suggested that the Irish parasites may constitute a different strain of P. laevis , since they use a different species of intermediate host and are better able to survive in brown trout.  相似文献
