The population dynamics of D. galeata was studied during the period May–July of 5 successive years in Bautzen Reservoir (Germany). Sampling intervals of 3–4 days and knowledge of the egg–age distribution made it possible to calculate recruitment of the population for each sampling interval. In every year, high Daphnia densities and high Secchi depth readings (clear-water stage) were recorded in spring. In two of the 5 years, Daphnia abundance remained on a high level throughout summer, whereas in the remaining 3 years a midsummer decline of Daphnia was observed. Birth rates declined while the abundance increased in spring in every year but the timing of this decline in relation to abundance and the onset of the clear-water stage revealed no obvious pattern, distinguishing between years with or without a midsummer decline. However, cumulative recruitment did reveal a clear pattern: in years without a midsummer decline, cumulative recruitment increased slowly, but continually, starting from a low level in early May. By contrast, in years with a midsummer decline, recruitment increased strongly during one week in May, starting from a relatively high density level (>30 ind. l–1). This quick increase was followed by extended periods with low recruitment. Consequently, in these years the population was dominated by a strong peak-cohort of about the same age during the clear-water stage. If all members of this cohort, while approaching their maximum life-span, die off during a short time interval, this may have a pronounced effect on the initiation of a midsummer decline. From an extensive literature search, evidence is provided that the findings of this study represent a demographic mechanism which is of general importance for the initiation of a midsummer decline in temperate waters. 相似文献

The influence of different food availability on egg size and egg mass in Daphnia magna Straus was studied in long-term experiments using a flow-through system. Daphnia were either kept a constant high or low food levels or subjected to alternating periods of high food and starvation. Some animals were starved continuously after they had deposited their first clutch of eggs. Eggs were measured and weighed and their density (dry mass per volume) was determined. The results support the model of Glazier (1992), which defines a region of reproductive constraint at very low food concentrations and a region of adaptive response as food concentration increase. Egg sizes were largest under continuously low food concentrations (0.1 mg Cl–1), which indicates that the maximum of Glazier's non-linear response curve is at very low food levels. Eggs produced during starvation were small, probably as a result of reproductive constraints. Egg density was about 0.37 mg dry weight mm–1 and did not differ between treatments. 相似文献

Recent progress in molecular phylogenetics has proven that photosynthetic eukaryotes acquired plastids via primary and secondary endosymbiosis and has given us information about the origin of each plastid. How a photosynthetic endosymbiont became a plastid in each group is, however, poorly understood, especially for the organisms with secondary plastids. Investigating how a nuclear-encoded plastid protein is targeted into a plastid in each photosynthetic group is one of the most important keys to understanding the evolutionary process of symbiogenetic plastid acquisition and its diversity. For organisms which originated through primary endosymbiosis, protein targeting into plastids has been well studied at the molecular level. For organisms which originated through secondary endosymbiosis, molecular-level studies have just started on the plastid-targeted protein-precursor sequences and the targeting pathways of the precursors. However, little information is available about how the proteins get across the inner two or three envelope membranes in organisms with secondary plastids. A good in vitro protein-import system for isolated plastids and a cell transformation system must be established for each group of photosynthetic eukaryotes in order to understand the mechanisms, the evolutionary processes and the diversity of symbiogenetic plastid acquisitions in photosynthetic eukaryotes. 相似文献

The sequencing of the human genome is well underway. Technology has advanced, such that the total genomic sequence is possible, along with an extensive catalogue of genes via comprehensive cDNA libraries. With the recent completion of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae sequencing project and the imminent completion of that of Caenorhabditis elegans, the most frequently asked question is how much can sequence data alone tell us? The answer is that that a DNA sequence taken in isolation from a single organism reveals very little. The vast majority of DNA in most organisms is noncoding. Protein coding sequences or genes cannot function as isolated units without interaction with noncoding DNA and neighboring genes. This genomic environment is specific to each organism. In order to understand this we need to look at similar genes in different organisms, to determine how function and position has changed over the course of evolution. By understanding evolutionary processes we can gain a greater insight into what makes a gene and the wider processes of genetics and inheritance. Comparative genomics (with model organisms), once the poor relation of the human genome project, is starting to provide the key to unlock the DNA code. 相似文献

Recent research conducted on a hypothetical four-parameter system generated by two stochastic processes has shown that errors of interpretation are likely to result when the relative importance of an underlying generating process is inferred from the analysis of an emergent pattern of a natural system. This paper presents an approach which substantially reduces that error for the hypothetical system, taken as an analog for a natural system. This approach is based on recognition of the organizational levels composing the system and utilizes observations on structure at a lower organizational level to resolve the properties of the generating processes at the lower level. The resulting knowledge of those underlying structures and the processes which created them are then used to determine the relative importance of those processes in affecting the emergent pattern of the system at a higher organizational level. It is concluded that in order to understand the role of a process in a natural system, measurements of system structure must be performed at a frequency which isolates the process from the other processes in the system. 相似文献

1. Shallow arctic lakes and ponds have simple and short food webs, but large uncertainties remain about benthic–pelagic links in these systems. We tested whether organic matter of benthic origin supports zooplankton biomass in a pond in NE Greenland, using stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen in the pond itself and in a 13C‐enrichment enclosure experiment. In the latter, we manipulated the carbon isotope signature of benthic algae to enhance its isotopic discrimination from other potential food sources for zooplankton. 2. The cladoceran Daphnia middendorffiana responded to the 13C‐enrichment of benthic mats with progressively increasing δ13C values, suggesting benthic feeding. Stable isotope analysis also pointed towards a negligible contribution of terrestrial carbon to the diet of D. middendorffiana. This agreed with the apparent dominance of autochthonous dissolved organic matter in the pond revealed by analysis of coloured dissolved organic matter. 3. Daily net production by phytoplankton in the pond (18 mg C m?2 day?1) could satisfy only up to half of the calculated minimum energy requirements of D. middendorffiana (35 mg C m?2 day?1), whereas benthic primary production alone (145 mg C m?2 day?1) was more than sufficient. 4. Our findings highlight benthic primary production as a major dietary source for D. middendorffiana in this system and suggest that benthic organic matter may play a key role in sustaining pelagic secondary production in such nutrient‐limited high arctic ponds. 相似文献

Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most virulent foodborne pathogens. L. monocytogenes Sortase A (SrtA) enzyme, which catalyzes the cell wall anchoring reaction of the leucine, proline, X, threonine, and glycine proteins (LPXTG, where X is any amino acid), is a target for the development of antilisteriosis drugs. In this study, the structure of the L. monocytogenes SrtA enzyme-substrate complex was obtained using homology modeling, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. Explicit enzyme-substrate interactions in the inactive and active forms of the enzyme were compared, based on 30 ns simulations on each system. The active site arginine (Arg 197) was found to be able change its hydrogen donor interactions from the LP backbone carbonyl groups of the LPXTG substrate in the inactive form, to the TG backbone carbonyls in the active form, which could be of importance for holding the substrate in position for the catalytic process. 相似文献

The cladoceran Daphnia middendorffiana is an arctic species able to produce winter eggs which develop parthenogenetically. The cytological study of the maturation of summer and winter eggs of an italian population of this species has shown that both types of eggs undergo only one maturation division of equational type with the expulsion of only one diploid polar body, the same maturation process as had been found in the pseudosexual eggs of a race of Daphnia pulex (Schrader, 1925).—The chromosomes behaviour during the maturation of summer and winter eggs of D. middendorffiana has been compared with that of a population of D. pulex which shows a normal heterogonic cycle.This investigation was supported by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (C.N.R.) of Italy. 相似文献

Structural switching of Staphylococcus aureus Clp protease: a key to understanding protease dynamics

ATP-dependent Clp protease (ClpP) is an attractive new target for the development of anti-infective agents. The ClpP protease consists of two heptameric rings that enclose a large chamber containing 14 proteolytic active sites. Recent studies indicate that ClpP likely undergoes conformational switching between an extended and degraded active state required for substrate proteolysis and a compacted and catalytically inactive state allowing product release. Here, we present the wild-type ClpP structures in two distinct states from Staphylococcus aureus. One structure is very similar to those solved ClpP structures in the extended states. The other is strikingly different from both the extended and the compacted state as observed in ClpP from other species; the handle domain of this structure kinks to take on a compressed conformation. Structural analysis and molecular dynamic simulations show that the handle domain predominantly controls the way in which degradation products exit the chamber through dynamic conformational switching from the extended state to the compressed state. Given the highly conserved sequences among ClpP from different species, this compressed conformation is unexpected and novel, which is potentially valuable for understanding the enzymatic dynamics and the acting mechanisms of ClpP. 相似文献

The evolution of antimalarial drug resistance is often considered to be a single-stage process in which parasites are either fully resistant or completely sensitive to a drug. However, this does not take into account the important intermediate stage of drug tolerance. Drug-tolerant parasites are killed by the high serum concentrations of drugs that occur during direct treatment of the human host. However, these parasites can spread in the human population because many drugs persist long after treatment, and the tolerant parasites can infect people in which there are residual levels of the drugs. This intermediate stage between fully sensitive and fully resistant parasites has far-reaching implications for the evolution of drug-resistant malaria. 相似文献

Biotic interactions are fundamental drivers governing biodiversity locally, yet their effects on geographical variation in community composition (i.e. incidence-based) and community structure (i.e. abundance-based) at regional scales remain controversial. Ecologists have only recently started to integrate different types of biotic interactions into community assembly in a spatial context, a theme that merits further empirical quantification. Here, we applied partial correlation networks to infer the strength of spatial dependencies between pairs of organismal groups and mapped the imprints of biotic interactions on the assembly of pond metacommunities. To do this, we used a comprehensive empirical dataset from Mediterranean landscapes and adopted the perspective that community assembly is best represented as a network of interacting organismal groups. Our results revealed that the co-variation among the beta diversities of multiple organismal groups is primarily driven by biotic interactions and, to a lesser extent, by the abiotic environment. These results suggest that ignoring biotic interactions may undermine our understanding of assembly mechanisms in spatially extensive areas and decrease the accuracy and performance of predictive models. We further found strong spatial dependencies in our analyses which can be interpreted as functional relationships among several pairs of organismal groups (e.g. macrophytes–macroinvertebrates, fish–zooplankton). Perhaps more importantly, our results support the notion that biotic interactions make crucial contributions to the species sorting paradigm of metacommunity theory and raise the question of whether these biologically-driven signals have been equally underappreciated in other aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Although more research is still required to empirically capture the importance of biotic interactions across ecosystems and at different spatial resolutions and extents, our findings may allow decision makers to better foresee the main consequences of human-driven impacts on inland waters, particularly those associated with the addition or removal of key species. 相似文献

The contribution of predators and abiotic factors to the regulation of the biomass and seasonal succession of crustacean zooplankton was studied in Lake Rehtijärvi (southern Finland). Field data in combination with bioenergetics modeling indicated that invertebrate planktivory by Chaoborus depressed cladoceran populations during early summer. In particular, bosminids that generally form the spring biomass peak of cladocerans in stratified temperate lakes did not appear in the samples until July. In July, predation pressure by chaoborids was relaxed due to their emergence period and cladoceran population growth appeared to be limited by predation by planktivorous fish. The effect of fish predation was amplified by reduced refuge availability for cladocerans. The concentration of dissolved oxygen below the epilimnion was depleted, forcing cladocerans to move upward to less turbid and thus more dangerous water layers. The effect of size selective predation by fish resulted in reduced mean size of cladocerans during the period when refuge thickness (thickness of the water layer with oxygen concentration <1 mg l?1 and water turbidity >30 NTU) was lowest. The results confirmed that in clay-turbid lakes, invertebrate predators could be the main regulators of herbivorous zooplankton even when cyprinid fish are abundant. 相似文献

Molecular studies of hemichordate development: a key to understanding the evolution of bilateral animals and chordates 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
SUMMARY Using the Hawaiian acorn worm, Ptychodera flava, we began molecular studies on the development of hemichordates, a phylum previously unstudied at this level. Here we review results garnered from the examination of a few specific genes selected to help understand the evolution of vertebrate structures. These studies suggest new ideas about the evolution of developmental mechanisms in the deuterostomes. In a seminal observation, we noted an unexpected zone of expression of the Brachyury gene in the early anterior embryonic ectoderm where the mouth will form. Typically, the Brachyury gene is closely linked to development of the notochord and is expressed around the blastopore and in the posterior mesoderm in most animals. This first expression of Brachyury at the blastopore may represent a regulatory program associated with organizing the original animal head and gut opening, as suggested by the expression of Brachyury during hypostome formation in hydra. We believe that the anterior expression of Brachyury in deuterostomes represents the cooption of the program for organizing the original animal gut opening to form the deuterostome mouth. Recent data from the trochophore larva of a polychaete show that an anterior zone of expression of Brachyury is produced in this protostome by splitting of the Brachyury field during the formation of a gut with a mouth and anus by the lateral fusion of the sides of the blastopore. The ability to initiate independently a secondary regulatory program to organize the new mouth leading to an anterior field of Brachyury expression may be a signal event in the evolution of the deuterostomes. We also noted that the P. flava homolog of T‐brain/Eomes, a gene closely related by sequence and expression around the blastopore to Brachyury and associated with development of the vertebrate brain, also exhibits early posterior expression around the blastopore and a field of de novo anterior ectoderm expression during later embryogenesis. The tissue in the zone of de novo anterior ectoderm expression of Pf‐Tbrain produces the apical organ, a larval neural structure that has been touted as an evolutionary precursor of the chordate dorsal brain. The gene regulatory mechanisms responsible for initiating the anterior zone of de novo expression of T‐brain may represent a cooption to specify early neuroectoderm of the regulatory program evolved first to drive anterior Brachyury expression for deuterostome mouth formation. It will be interesting to examine the possibilities that an ability to initiate the de novo anterior expression of the program that includes T‐brain may be a key event in the evolution of the developmental mechanisms leading to the chordate dorsal nervous system. 相似文献

Aim Treelines occur globally within a narrow range of mean growing season temperatures, suggesting that low‐temperature growth limitation determines the position of the treeline. However, treelines also exhibit features that indicate that other mechanisms, such as biomass loss not resulting in mortality (dieback) and mortality, determine treeline position and dynamics. Debate regarding the mechanisms controlling treeline position and dynamics may be resolved by identifying the mechanisms controlling prominent treeline spatial patterns (or ‘form’) such as the spatial structure of the transition from closed forest to the tree limit. Recent treeline studies world‐wide have confirmed a close link between form and dynamics. Location The concepts presented refer to alpine treelines globally. Methods In this review, we describe how varying dominance of three general ‘first‐level’ mechanisms (tree performance: growth limitation, seedling mortality and dieback) result in different treeline forms, what ‘second‐level’ mechanisms (stresses, e.g. freezing damage, photoinhibition) may underlie these general mechanisms, and how they are modulated by interactions with neighbours (‘third‐level’ mechanisms). This hierarchy of mechanisms should facilitate discussions about treeline formation and dynamics. Results We distinguish four primary treeline forms: diffuse, abrupt, island and krummholz. Growth limitation is dominant only at the diffuse treeline, which is the form that has most frequently responded as expected to growing‐season warming, whereas the other forms are controlled by dieback and seedling mortality and are relatively unresponsive. Main conclusions Treeline form provides a means for explaining the current variability in treeline position and dynamics and for exploring the general mechanisms controlling the responses of treelines to climatic change. Form indicates the relative dependence of tree performance on various aspects of the external climate (especially summer warmth versus winter stressors) and on internal feedbacks, thus allowing inferences on the type as well as strength of climate‐change responses. 相似文献
