The predatory bugPodisus maculiventris Say displays a reproductive diapause. In the laboratory, at 23±1°C, when the pre-imaginal stages were reared on larvae ofGalleria melonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) under a short photoperiod of 8L: 16D, diapause was induced in all adult females, whereas under a long photoperiod of 16L: 8D none entered diapause. Nymphal development was faster under the diapause-inducing short photoperiod than under the diapause-averting long photo-period. By contrast, embryonic development was faster under the long than under the short photoperiod. Diapause maintenance was also under the control of photoperiod. After a 10-d-period of chilling at 4°C, diapause was quickly terminated in adults kept under long photoperiod whereas it was maintained in most of those kept under short photoperiod. The predation rate of non-diapause or post-diapause adult females was much higher than that of diapause females.  相似文献

通过粘虫Mythimna separata幼虫密度(1头/瓶、20头/瓶、40头/瓶)对成虫水分、甘油酯和糖原含量影响的研究结果。不同幼虫密度处理的初羽化成虫水分含量无明显差异,但1~5日龄40头/瓶的雄蛾及1~3日龄雌蛾高于单头处理的;20、40头/瓶的初羽化成虫甘油酯含量没有显著的差异,但均显著地高于单头饲养的;20头/瓶羽化的雌、雄成虫l~5日龄甘油酯含量随日龄的增加而增加,到5日龄达到最大值后才开始下降,40头/瓶的在3日龄达到最大值后即开始下降,而单头饲养羽化的在1日龄达到较高值,2日龄降至最低后再缓慢回升。幼虫密度对初羽化成虫及1~7日龄雄蛾的糖原含量没有显著的影响,但20、40头/瓶条件下羽化的1~7日龄雌蛾糖原含量随日龄的增加而增加,而单头饲养的则随日龄的 增加而下降。这些结果表明幼虫密度不仅影响到初羽化成虫能源物质的含量,而且也可能影响到成虫能源物质特别是甘油酯的代谢。  相似文献

Abstract. Gonotrophic and embryonic development of Wohlfahrtia magnifica were studied on pupae and adults reared in the laboratory. Gonotrophic development in screwworm begins 8 days after pupation in yellow eye pharate adults. The adult female emerges with its oocytes at stage 3 and requires only 2 days for complete oogenesis and 5 days for complete embryogenesis. Mating occurs 2–5 days after adult emergence, starting the embryonic development. Each female produces an average of 76.8 active larvae which can produce a traumatic lesion in their hosts. When food sources were regularly supplied, synchronization of gonotrophic stages can be observed. These stages together with the embryonic ones are described.  相似文献

Oomyzus sokolowskii Kurdjumov is a larval endoparasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L., which is one of the most destructive pests of cruciferous vegetables worldwide. The performance of O. sokolowskii parasitizing P. xylostella on cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis), Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis), pakchoi (Brassica chinensis), cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata), and broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) was determined under laboratory conditions. Our results showed that O. sokolowskii performed best on cauliflower compared with the others, with the greatest net reproductive rate (R o = 34.99), intrinsic rate of increase (r m = 0.196), offspring emerged/host larva (9.0), percentage of parasitized host larvae with adults emerged (67.6 %), adults produced (43.6/female), and the shortest developmental time from egg to adult (15.8 days). Chinese cabbage-, pakchoi-, cabbage-, and cauliflower-adapted O. sokolowskii performed the best in percentage of parasitized host larvae with adults emerged, offspring adults produced per female, and offspring produced per host larva when parasitizing fourth instar P. xylostella larvae on cauliflower. The percentage of host-adapted female O. sokolowskii parasitizing different host-adapted fourth instar P. xylostella larvae was similar. Based on our results, we suggest that O. sokolowskii had performed best on cauliflower, which might be the best host plant to rear O. sokolowskii.  相似文献

Based on the finding that Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) has direct negative effects on larvae of Chrysoperla carnea, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate its toxicity to the adults. While the ingestion of GNA dissolved in an artificial diet did not affect adult longevity, there were concentration-dependent negative effects on the pre-oviposition period, daily fecundity and total fecundity (number of eggs laid). When GNA was ingested by larvae of C. carnea, it caused a significant extension of larval development time. Adults that had emerged from GNA-fed larvae did not differ from those that developed from control larvae in terms of adult fresh weight, pre-oviposition period and daily or total fecundity. However, fertility (proportion of hatching eggs) was significantly decreased in adults raised from GNA-treated larvae. Western blots revealed that GNA ingested by larvae of C. carnea was partly transferred to the adult stage and was subsequently excreted or digested within a few days. Our toxicity studies (Tier-1 tests) clearly established a hazard of GNA to adult C. carnea when administered to larvae or adults at high concentrations. Implications of these toxicity data for the non-target risk assessment of GNA-expressing transgenic crops are discussed.  相似文献

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a key species in Antarctic marine ecosystems, as well as an important species in the Southern Ocean fishery. Here, we provide the first detailed photographic documentation of embryonic and larval development of Antarctic krill over a 5-month developmental period under controlled laboratory conditions. Developing embryos and larvae were photographed every 3 h and every 5 days, respectively. Our results indicated a developmental time of approximately 6 days for embryos and 138 days for larvae (0.5 °C). This study provided baseline biometry information for future investigations of Antarctic krill development under changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

To understand the role of sea temperature on the population biology of the crown-of-thorns sea star Acanthaster planci, the thermal window for embryonic and larval development was investigated. In two experiments, the response of embryos and larvae across 12 temperatures from 19.4 to 36.5 °C was quantified as the percentage of individuals reaching cleavage stage embryos, blastula, gastrula, early-bipinnaria, late-bipinnaria larvae or abnormal. Measurements were made at 7 times up to 72 h post-fertilisation, with the morphometrics of larvae measured in the 72-h sample. Acanthaster planci developed at temperatures between 19.4 and 33.2 °C, with a thermal window for development to the late-bipinnaria stage between 25.6 and 31.6 °C. Development rate, normal development and larval size were optimal at 28.7 °C, with development rates remaining relatively constant up to 31.6 °C. Rates of abnormality increased steadily (early embryonic stages) above 28.7 °C and was 100 % at temperatures approaching 33 °C. These experiments provide a more detailed insight into the response of A. planci developmental stages to temperature. The present day distribution of the species in eastern Australia overlap with the optimal thermal window for development to the late-bipinnaria stage (≈25–32 °C), implying a role of temperature in controlling population distributions and abundances. Despite this, short- or long-term temperature increases may not be a major modulator of the crown-of-thorns recruitment success, population dynamics and distribution in the future as no significant change in development rates, larval survival and growth occurred within this thermal window. Therefore, moderate (1–2 °C) increases in sea temperatures caused by El Niño or near-future ocean warming may not drive an increase in developmental and settlement success. Indeed, without any acclimation to warmer temperatures expected under near-future warming (+2 to 4 °C), climate change could ultimately reduce larval survival due to elevated mortality above the optimal development temperature.  相似文献

Life history parameters of the freshwater chironomid species Kiefferulus calligaster (Kieffer, 1911) were investigated under laboratory conditions, with the use of larval development time and wing length as key features. An index of fitness was derived using these two parameters to represent the fitness of adults as a function of the larval development. Survivorship, deduced from the data on the mortality of larval stages, was related to developmental time as—(survivorship, lx) y = 1.16 ? 0.04 × (days). The larval development time varied between males and females with a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 days from first instar larva to eclosion of imagine. The average wing length of adult females was larger than males (3.9 mm ± 0.03 S.E. vs. 3.36 mm ± 0.02 S.E.), for both early and late emerging individuals. The degree of dimorphism between the sexes was prominent for wing length and larval development time. The index of fitness for the early and late emerging adults differed significantly (P < 0.05) in both the sexes.  相似文献

For conservation purposes, and to supply critically endangered insects for laboratory use, a system for artificial breeding is crucial. However, in the case of carnivorous insects such as diving beetles, the larvae must be isolated because they are cannibalistic. We developed a method for mass breeding the larvae of two diving beetles, Dytiscus sharpi sharpi (Wehncke) and Dytiscus sharpi validus (Régimbart) (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae), which are designated critically endangered species in Japan. Ten to twenty larvae were raised in a small tank (35 cm × 25 cm × 10 cm; water depth 7 cm) with Rana ornativentris (Werner) tadpoles as prey. At low prey density, ~80 % of the larvae were cannibalized. At moderate prey density, 50–60 % were cannibalized. However, at high prey density, <3 % were cannibalized. Well-fed mass-bred adults were larger than individually bred and field-collected adults. This mass breeding method can be used for the conservation and breeding of these rare diving beetles in a manageable number of aquaria.  相似文献

The life cycle and behavior of Amblyomma rotundatum were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The experiment started with four engorged females collected from toads (Rhinella schneideri) naturally infested at the Pirapitinga Ecological Station in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Developmental periods of free-living stages were assessed in an incubator at 27 ± 1 °C, >80 % RH and darkness. The complete life cycle, including pre-attachment periods for each parasitic stage, ranged from 126 to 228 days. The pre-attachment, feeding and molting periods increased as the life cycle progressed from larva to adult female. Oviposition lasted about 20 days, with the peak occurring on days 4 and 5. Longevity of nymphs and adult females was quite similar (approximately 250 and 240 days, respectively) and slightly longer than that of larvae. Lesions caused by tick feeding are discussed and a list of known hosts, including new host records for A. rotundatum, is offered.  相似文献

Fopius arisanus (Sonan) is a solitary parasitoid of eggs and the first instar larvae of Tephritidae. Due to the occurrence of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) in various regions and under several climatic conditions, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of different temperatures on the embryonic development (egg–adult) and determine thermal requirements and the number of annual generations F. arisanus on eggs of C. capitata. In the laboratory, eggs of C. capitata (24 h) were submitted to parasitism of F. arisanus during 6 h. Later, the eggs were placed in plastic containers (50 mL) (50 eggs/container) on a layer of artificial diet and packed in chambers at temperatures 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 28, 30, and 32 ± 1°C, RH 70 ± 10%, and a photophase of 12 h. The largest number of offspring, emergence rate, and weight of adults of F. arisanus were observed at 25°C. The highest sex ratios (sr > 0.75) were recorded at 15 and 18°C, being statistically higher than the temperatures 20°C (0.65), 22°C (0.64), 25°C (0.65), 28°C (0.49), and 30°C (0.47). At 32°C, there was no embryonic development of F. arisanus. The egg–adult period was inversely proportional to temperature. Based on the development of the biological cycle (egg–adult), the temperature threshold (T t) was 10.3°C and thermal constant (K) of 488.34 degree-days, being the number of generations/year directly proportional to the temperature increase. The data show the ability of F. arisanus to adapt to different thermal conditions, which is important for biological control programs of C. capitata.  相似文献

Field observations indicate that white grub beetles Dasylepida ishigakiensis Niijima et Kinoshita (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) pupate approximately 40 cm underground and then emerge from the soil surface as adults. Although the factors influencing adult emergence from the soil have been studied, the migration of adults from belowground to the surface has never been characterized. In this study, the vertical movement of virgin adults from natural eclosion depths to their emergence from the soil surface was investigated. Virgin adults were introduced at a depth of 40 cm from the soil surface in wooden-framed glass cases, and the vertical position of each individual was checked every day. Both females and males emerged near the soil surface at approximately day 50 after they were transferred from 24 °C to 18 °C conditions. The maturity of the ovaries in unemerged and emerged females was also observed by magnetic resonance imaging. All females that had emerged from the soil possessed developed oocytes, and most possessed mature eggs. The cross-sectional area of eggs was determined in magnetic resonance images and compared between unemerged and emerged females, and the egg areas of emerged females were significantly larger than those of unemerged females. Our results indicate that the timing of female emergence from soil corresponded to ovary maturity in this species.  相似文献

The larvae ofPlutella xylostella were fed on five wild crucifers,Capsella bursa-pastoris, Lepidium virginicum, Cardamine flexuosa, Rorippa indica, R. islandica and a crop, cabbage. The developmental period of the immature stages, adult longevity, preoviposition period, fecundity and morphometrical characters of the adults were measured. The flight activity of the adults was also measured by the tethered flight method. All the wild plants except forR. islandica were less suitable host plants than cabbage, and larvae which were fed on these less suitable plants emerged as smaller adults with shorter wings. The smaller female adults had lower fecundity but a higher flight activity. Smaller adults measured in terms of their pupal weight among individuals fed on the same host plant had longer wings. These smaller adults with longer wing flew more actively.  相似文献

Twenty local isolates of entomopathogenic fungi were determined for control of the larvae and adults of Culex quinquefasciatus. In a laboratory experiment, a Penicillium sp. CM-010 caused 100 % mortality of third-instar larvae within 2 h using a conidial suspension of 1 × 106 conidia ml?1. Its LC50 was 3 × 105 conidia ml?1, and the lethal time (LT50) was 1.06 h. Cloning and sequencing of its internal transcribed spacer region indicated that this Penicillium species is Penicillium citrinum (100 % identity in 434 bp). Mortality of the adult was highest with Aspergillus flavus CM-011 followed with Metarhizium anisopliae CKM-048 from 1 × 109 conidia ml?1. P. citrinum CM-010 at 1 × 106 conidia ml?1 killed 100 % larvae within 2 h while Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis at 5 ITU ml?1 required 24 h. This P. citrinum CM-010 also greatly reduced survival of C. quinquefasciatus larvae in an unreplicated field test. Light and transmission electron micrographs showed that the fungal conidia were ingested by the larvae and deposited in the gut. The metabolite patulin was produced by P. citrinum CM-010 instead of citrinin.  相似文献

Among the predators with high potential for use in biological control, the species of the genus Podisus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) have received special attention for laboratory rearing, since they feed on different agricultural and forestry pest insects. However, the type of diet offered to insects in the laboratory may affect the viability of populations, expressed essentially by demographic parameters such as survival and fecundity. This study assessed demographic and development aspects in experimental populations of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas, 1851) fed on larvae of Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann, 1818) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) as an alternative prey. The demographic parameters fecundity and survival were investigated in life stages of P. nigrispinus with ecological modeling, by applying the Leslie matrix population model, producing histograms of life stages in successive time steps. The functional response of P. nigrispinus was also investigated on seven densities of C. putoria third-instar larvae at 24 and 48 h. The survival of predators that reached adulthood was 65% and the development time from egg to adult was 23.15 days. The predator showed a type III functional response for consumption of C. putoria at 24 and 48 h. The Leslie-matrix simulation of the age structure provided perpetuation of the predator population over time steps and the prey proved to be feasible for use in rearing and maintenance of P. nigrispinus in the laboratory.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted on certain aspects of biology ofDiadegma semiclausum Hellén, a larval parasite of a crucifer pest,Plutella xylostella (L.). Within the range of 15°C to 35°C, the higher temperature, the shorter was the duration of larval and adult stages. Egg hatching and adult emergence were high at 15°C to 30°C but were significantly reduced at 35°C. The higher the temperature, the higher was the proportion of males produced. Temperature threshold was 5.74°C for eggs, 3.80°C for larvae, 5.91°C for pupae and 6.60°C for adults.D. semiclausum oviposition in the first threeP. xylostella larval instars produced more parasite males than females but oviposition in the fourth instar produced significantly more females than males. Parasite adults tended to emerge from their pupae from 06∶00 to 09∶00 hours although some emerged at other hours during the photophase. Adult longevity and production of eggs increased when adults were provided with a food source (honey) compared with no food or provision of water alone. Parasite adults survived and laid eggs for 28 days when provided with food but for only three days when deprived of food.  相似文献

Life table and predation of the predatory mite Neoseiulus longispinosus (Evans) on the red spider mite (RSM), Oligonychus coffeae (Nietner), a major pest of tea in India, were studied in the laboratory. Developmental time from egg to adult varied from 4 to 14 days at 30 to 15 °C, respectively; at 35 °C no larva survived. Survival of immature stages was more than 94 % at all temperatures. Threshold temperature for development of immature stages of females and males was 10 and 9.9 °C, respectively, and thermal constant was 84.03 degree-days for females and 80 for males. Sex ratio was female biased and temperature (20–30 °C) had no clear effect on sex determination. Egg hatchability was 73 % at 35 °C and >97 % at lower temperatures. Average number of eggs laid per female/day was higher at 30 °C than at 20 or 25 °C. The highest net reproductive rate (R 0) was 40.7, at 20 °C. Mean generation time (T) decreased from 28 to 13 days with temperature increasing from 20 to 30 °C. Weekly multiplication (6.5) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m ) (0.268) were highest at 30 °C. Males lived longer than females at every temperature tested. Longevity was highest at 20 °C (50 days for females and 55 for males). Survival and longevity were adversely affected by temperature above 30 °C. Daily consumption of prey increased with the advancement of predator’s life stages; adult females consumed the highest numbers of prey items, preferably larvae and nymphs.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to elucidate how temperature affects the reproduction and development of Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), an emerging major pest of blueberry in Japan. Although extensive studies of the biology of this pest have been carried out, the effects of temperature on its reproduction and development remain unknown. We found that when adults mated at 31 °C for 4 days, none of the eggs hatched. Female oviposition and egg hatching rate were also reduced as temperature increased during the oviposition period. When D. suzukii larvae developed above 31 °C, pupation and adult eclosion were abolished. According to field observations, adult D. suzukii ceased to appear from the end of July 2010, when the average temperature exceeded 28 °C or when the temperature within a day exceeded 33 °C for 8 h or more. Experiments in which the mating temperature fluctuated within a day revealed that both the number of eggs oviposited and their hatch rate were significantly suppressed when the daily temperature regime during mating was either 31 °C for 12 h/25 °C for 12 h or 33 °C for 8 h/25 °C for 16 h, relative to the values at 25 °C for 24 h.  相似文献

Cohorts ofCotesia melanoscela (Ratzeburg) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) cocoons were exposed in the field at three Maryland locations to attack by natural enemies for two week periods, then were held in an outdoor insectary untilC. melanoscela adult or hyperparasitoid emergence. The timing of placement of theC. melanoscela cocoons in the field had a profound effect on the number ofC. melanoscela that survived and emerged as adults in synchrony with the field occurence of susceptible early-instarLymantria dispar (L.) larvae. The proportion of emerged adults available during susceptible host stages ranged from 1–92%, depending on dates of release. November or December placements ofC. melanoscela cocoons were most effective with 74–92 % emergence of adults during peak periods of susceptible host stages. Spring placements were least effective. The causes of ineffective placement, which varied with location and with date, were program (handling) loss, non-emergence, attack by hyperparasitoids, predation, andC. melanoscela adult emergence at times when appropriateL. dispar life stages would not be present. We concluded that November/December releases avoided natural enemies and promoted appropriate diapause and post-diapause development that enhanced survival and synchrony of adult emergence with host stage susceptibility.  相似文献
