Cotesia orobenae Forbes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a gregarious endoparasitoid of the cross-striped cabbageworm (Evergestis rimosalis Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), a minor pest of Brassica crops in Virginia. Cocoons of C. orobenae were collected, weekly, from field plots of broccoli and cabbage crops in Whitethorne, Montgomery County (VA) during 1989 and 1990. Counts were also made of the eggs and larvae of E. rimosalis to determine the pest′s seasonality. In January 1991, C. orobenae cocoons were collected from the held plots to see if C. orobenae overwinters within cocoons. In May 1993, trap plants bearing E. rimosalis larvae were placed among the field plants weekly to determine if C. orobenae adults are present and ovipositing early in the season. Field counts of E. rimosalis eggs and larvae in 1990 indicated the occurrence of three generations off. rimosalis from June to October, but parasitism of larvae on trap plants by C. orobenae in May 1993 suggested that the parasitoid is present in mid-May. C. orobenae oviposits in first through third instar E. rimosalis and the resulting larvae feed internally on the developing host, exit the fourth (last) instar host, and spin cocoons in a loose mass. Mean brood size of 118 C. orobenae field-collected cocoon masses was 9.2 ± 4.4 cocoons per mass. Out of 1085 cocoons, adult C. orobenae emerged from 77%, hyperparasitoids emerged from 7%, and nothing emerged from 16%. Females accounted for 73% of the emerging C. orobenae adults. Data from field-collected cocoons suggest that C. orobenae enter diapause in late September and overwinter in cocoons. Six pupal hyperparasitoids were recovered: Isdromas lycaenae (Howard) (Ichneumonidae); Conura (=Spilochalcis) torvina (Cresson) and Conura (=Spilochalcis) albifrons (Walsh) (Chalcididae); Hypopteromalus tabacum (Fitch), Catolaccus cyanoideus Burks, and Trichomalopsis viridescens (Walsh) (Pteromalidae).  相似文献

For the first time, year round and long-term seasonal research on the composition, phenology, and population dynamics of pelagic larvae of bottom invertebrates were conducted in the Vostok Bay of the Sea of Japan. Larvae of 98 taxa of various ranks were found. The larvae of bivalves and polychaetes were the most diverse. The larvae of bottom invertebrates occurred in plankton year-round. Their density was at its minimum in January (less than 100 ind./m3), and its maximum from June to November (more than 1000 ind./m3). The larvae of polychaetes dominated in the autumn and winter seasons, whereas bivalve and gastropod larvae dominated in the spring and summer seasons. It was shown that the proportion of pollution tolerant meroplankton larvae of the Polydora and Pseudopolydora genera was high in the Vostok Bay, and could indirectly indicate increasing anthropogenic pressure in the area.  相似文献

We conducted a seasonal survey of the swimming behaviour of Chironomus acerbiphilus larvae in volcanic Lake Katanuma from April 1998 to December 2001. Swimming C. acerbiphilus density was much higher than other chironomid species in lakes. All C. acerbiphilus larvae (1st through 4th instars) swam, but the earlier instars (especially the 1st) had the greatest densities and fluctuations. First instars were never found in the benthic population. This result indicates that the 1st-instar larvae are planktonic. Low water temperature (below about 10 °C) resulted in the seasonal disappearance of swimming chironomid larvae. Chemical factors – oxygen depletion or presence of hydrogen sulfide – also restricted the distribution of swimming and benthic larvae. Larvae were distributed only in the oxygen-rich part of the lake bottom and swam only in the oxygen-rich layer of the water column. The density of older swimming C. acerbiphilus (3rd and 4th instars) tended to increase with increasing benthic larval densities. The chemical stress of oxygen depletion or presence of hydrogen sulfide during holomixis within and after the stratification period leads to conspicuous swimming behaviour of benthic C. acerbiphilus larvae. Almost all C. acerbiphilus larvae died on this occasion.  相似文献

The life cycle and biological characteristics of the nuisance midge, Hydrobaenus kondoi Sæther were studied in 1989–90 at the middle reaches of the Kiso River, Japan. A study of seasonal abundance of both adults and larvae revealed that the Kiso River population was bivoltine. In laboratory cultures, the species required 840.7 degree-days to complete the life cycle. Larvae built a cocoon in the second instar for aestivation during the high temperatures of summer. The cocoons were found attached to sand grains in shallow water near shore.  相似文献

Gonometa postica Walker produces silk of high quality, but it is affected by parasitoids attack. A study on the parasitism of G. postica larvae and pupae on host and non‐host plants were undertaken for the first and second generations, corresponding to the long (March–May) and short (October–December) rainy seasons in 2006 at six field sites, three each in the Imba and Mumoni forests of Mwingi, eastern Kenya. All freshly spun cocoons of G. postica were sampled at each site from a total of 100 trees of host plants and other non‐host plants where they have migrated before pupation. The cocoons were kept individually in fine net‐sealed plastic vials to determine percentage parasitism. Two dipterans and four hymenopteran larval–pupal parasitoids were identified from the two forests. The most common parasitoids were Palexorista sp. (Diptera: Tachinidae) and Goryphus sp. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) with parasitism ranging from 1.8 to 32.7% and 2.2 to 7.5%, respectively. Parasitism varied significantly according to host or non‐host plants, seasons and sites. This study indicates that, of the six parasitoid species recovered, only two had a significant impact in reducing the quality of the cocoons.  相似文献

A technique is described whereby 5th‐instar larvae of the codling moth (Laspeyresia pomonella) which have finished feeding can be tagged externally with cobalt‐58 and released on apple trees, where they seek cocooning sites. Two μCi 58Co per insect did not significantly affect larval survival in the field, or subsequent pupation, emergence, mating, and oviposition in the laboratory. Tagging was more efficient than whole‐tree scraping for the location of cocoons, and was non‐destructive of both the insects and their cocooning sites.

Relocation and observation of the tagged larvae in their cocoons permitted accurate estimation of mortality from when they left the fruit (= release) until adult emergence in the following spring. Natural mortality of larvae seeking cocooning sites was attributed mainly to insect predators, and varied significantly between trees and blocks, averaging 57% over 6 years. Avian predation by the silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) was the greatest hazard to cocooned larvae; this, too, varied significantly between blocks, and averaged 53% over the same period. Both mortalities appeared to be density‐related.  相似文献

  1. Analysis of life tables of the oriental moth, Monema flavescens, obtained for 8 generations over 4 years, disclosed that the cocoon parasitoid, Praestochrysis shanghaiensis, acted as a density-disruptive factor.
  2. The density of the host cocoon remained stable (max./min.=3.2), whereas that of the host adult varied (max./min.=14.3) although both showed similar fluctation patterns.
  3. Stability of the host population was associated with the density-dependence in the ratio of first generation cocoons to overwintered generation moths, which was the key factor for the rate of change throughout the year. Chrysidid parasitism among the first generation cocoons ranged from 37.7 to 70.1%, and that among the second generation cocoons from 16.7 to 63.2%, each showing an inverse density-dependence and acting as the main determinant (key-factor) of the between-year variation in the density of the adult moths.
  4. The density-dependence of the rate of change from overwintered generation adults to first generation cocoons was so strong that the parasitism on the second generation hosts had not effect on the cocoon density of the first generation. On the other hand, the density-dependence of the rate of change from first generation adults to second generation cocoons was weak, and the parasitism on the first generation hosts became the key factor for the between-year variation of the second generation cocoons.
  5. It is suggested that the stability of the parasitoid-host system will be disrupted without three parasitism-restricting factors: asynchrony in the parasitoid attack on the second generation hosts, high mortality among parasitoid larvae of the second generation, and the high proportion of those first generation parasitoids that enter diapause. These factors are considered to be effective only in cooler parts of the distribution of the parasitoid.

Methane efflux was studied in stands of three emergent macrophyte species (Equisetum fluviatile, Schoenoplectus lacustris and Phragmites australis) commonly found in the littoral zone of boreal lakes. In vegetation stands with relatively low methane (CH4) emissions (<0.3 mol m?2 (ice‐free period)?1), the seasonal variation of CH4 efflux was better correlated with the dynamics of plant growth than variation in sediment temperature. In dense and productive vegetation stands that released high amounts of CH4 (2.3–7.7 mol m?2 (ice‐free period)?1), the seasonal variation in CH4 efflux was correlated with sediment temperature, indicating that methanogens were more limited by temperature than substrate supply. The bottom type at the growth site of the emergent plants significantly influenced the ratio of CH4 efflux to aboveground biomass of plants (Eff : B). The lowest Eff : B ratio was found in E. fluviatile stands growing on sand bottom under experimental conditions and the highest in P. australis‐dominated littoral areas accumulating detritus from external sources. The future changes expected in the hydrology of boreal lakes and rivers because of climatic warming may impact the growth conditions of aquatic macrophytes as well as decomposition and accumulation of detritus and, thus, CH4 effluxes from boreal lakes.  相似文献

Summary In the ant Camponotus mus the eclosion of imagines from the cocoons was shown to be controlled by nurse workers, which broke the cocoons and assisted the callows to energe. Short-term colony prey deprivation modified the eclosion-help behavior resulting in a delay in cocoon opening times. During long-term prey deprivation, no new cocoons were spun; the starved larvae grew and pupated when prey was again available. These findings as a colony strategy adapted to the changing condition of prey availabitity in a temperate habitat are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of food concentration and population density on the feeding behavior of Anopheles stephensi (Diptera, Culicidae) larvae has been shown experimentally. Lack of food resulted in larvae switching from sweeping the surface film to scraping the substrate off the bottom. The effect of the larval population density was more complex and depended on the food concentration. As a result, the ratio between the larvae keeping to the surface and to the bottom of the vessel was determined by interactions which led to their redistribution between the two trophic niches: the surface film and the bottom substrate. The traits observed ensure plasticity in the use of trophic resources within a water body.  相似文献

The effects of floating-leaved, submerged and emergent macrophytes on sediment resuspension and internal phosphorus loading were studied in the shallow Kirkkojärvi basin by placing sedimentation traps among different plant beds and adjacent open water and by sediment and water samples. All the three life forms considerably reduced sediment resuspension compared with non-vegetated areas. Both among submerged (Ceratophyllum demersum, Potamogeton obtusifolius, Ranunculus circinatus) and emergent (Typha angustifolia) plants, resuspension rate was on average 43% of that in the adjacent open water, while within floating-leaved plants (Nuphar lutea) the corresponding value was 87%. The effects of submerged and emergent vegetation increased in the course of the growing season together with increasing plant density. Among floating-leaved vegetation, such seasonal trend in resuspension effects was not observed. Compared with the non-vegetated area, floating-leaved, submerged and emergent plants reduced internal phosphorus loading on average by 21, 12 and 26 mg m−2 d−1, respectively. The effects of floating-leaved plants on resuspension-mediated internal phosphosrus loading were thus comparable to the effects of the other two life forms.  相似文献

The day‐night vertical distribution, diel feeding activity and diet of fourth instar of Chaoborus larvae were analyzed in lacustrine zone of a neotropical reservoir which shows seasonally contrasting hypolimnetic oxygen conditions. Larvae stayed in sediment and water bottom during day and ascended to surface during night. Results indicate that feeding activity is limited mainly to the plankton population. Phytoplankton, rotifers or remains of Chaoborus larvae were not found in crops. With the exception of ostracods, all crustacean prey available in the zooplankton occurred in the guts. Ceriodaphnia cornuta and Moina micrura were the most frequent food items (about 75% of occurrence frequency) and were positively selected. The remainder crustacean zooplankton taxa were negatively selected by larvae. The most intense feeding activity in larvae occurred near midnight and sunrise, in dates when the hypolimnion was anoxic. When oxygen was available on the bottom, a higher and not changing diel feeding activity was detected. Our results indicate that vertical migration may promote a spatial separation between larvae and zooplankton, and feeding activity of larvae occurred only when both overlapped. The relative roles of temperature and food availability on the seasonal and daily growth of whitefish Coregonus lavaretus larvae were investigated in the oligotrophic peri‐alpine Lake Annecy, France. During the spring from 2004 to 2007, surface water temperature and density of potential zooplankton prey were monitored, and 2688 larvae were caught and measured. In addition, the daily growth of 130 larvae was estimated retrospectively by investigating the microstructure of their otoliths. Temperature played the predominant role in controlling both seasonal and daily growth of early larvae. In contrast, the abundance of Mesocyclops leuckarti and larval density was only slightly correlated to larval growth, suggesting no food limitation nor strong interindividual competition over the study period. Overall, these findings run counter to concerns about potential food limitation, but sound a warning about the potential impact of climate change on fish ecology and fisheries management.  相似文献

In a study at Appleby Research Orchard, Nelson, examination of the fruit from mature ‘Delicious’ apple trees sprayed with ryania over 5 years showed that less than 10% of 5th‐instar larvae of the codling moth (Laspeyresia pomonella) seeking cocooning sites originated from fruit on the ground. In 1972 and 1973 the survival of such larvae was studied by tagging with cobalt‐58 and releasing them beneath mature trees. In both years about 25 % of the tagged larvae returned to the tree to spin cocoons. Larvae released on bare ground 0–1 m from the tree trunks were more successful than those released in the sward 1–2 m away. Once on the trees, most larvae spun cocoons beneath exfoliating bark on the lower parts of the leaders and the trunk. Fifty‐two percent of the cocoons located were formed on the ground, and overwintering mortality of these was estimated to be near 100%. The pre‐cocooning mortality of larvae released on the ground was similar to that of larvae released on the trees in the same year. It was concluded that larvae from windfalls could be ignored in estimating 5th‐instar larval mortality of codling moth on ‘Delicious’ trees. On the cultivars ‘Dunn's Favourite’ and ‘Cox's Orange Pippin’, however, the higher percentage of larvae in windfalls made their inclusion in mortality estimates essential.  相似文献

Summary The output of first stage larvae of the neurotrophic nematode Elaphostrongylus rangiferi was studied both in a herd of reindeer in the field and in reindeer held in captivity. There was a marked seasonal cycle in the output of larvae from infected reindeer. This seasonal cycle is dependent on host sex. After an initial phase of logarithmic increase from the onset of patency in late winter/spring, the larval output declines to a minimum in summer in both female and male reindeer. From then onwards a yearly cycle is repeated with a maximum density of larvae in autumn/early winter from male reindeer, and in late winter/spring from female reindeer. E. rangiferi has an adult longevity of several years in the reindeer, and it is probable that the seasonal cycle of parasite output is linked to seasonal changes in the degree of host stress.  相似文献

The parasitic effectiveness of Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov for the control of diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella L., was investigated without spraying pesticides in the greenhouse, and the damage degrees of Brassica rapa cv. Pakchoi grown in parasitoid-applied plot and control plot were evaluated. Among the 961 fourth instar DBM larvae collected in the common cabbage fields at Kwanshan region in Taiwan, 336 cocoons of C. plutellae were harvested from DBM larvae, which showed a parasitism rate of 35.0%. A total of 650 DBM adults and 600 C. plutellae adults were released according to the releasing scheme in the experiment plot. As a result, 56.7% of the DBM larvae were parasitized by C. plutellae adults 12 days before harvest, and the parasitism reached 80.8% at six days before harvest. At the harvest time, a population density of C. plutellae cocoons in the experiment plot was 2.2/plant, and that of normal DBM larvae was 0.5/plant. The density of DBM in the control plot was much higher than in the parasitoid-released plot by 7.7/plant. In the first survey, the density of DBM larvae on a Pakchoi plant was quite low, 0.3 ∼ 0.8 larvae. However, the DBM population increased dramatically after six days later, 5.7-10.1 larvae/plant. The population density of DBM larvae showed clear difference between the parasitoid-released plot and control plot. The parasitism increased to nearly two fold within a week after the release of DBM adults. As a further study, a combining use of two or more species para-sitoids could be considered to improve a parasitism against DBM in the fields.  相似文献

Fish larvae and fish eggs were sampled from the inshore waters of eastern Lake Michigan from 1978 through 1980, using a benthic sled and a plankton net towed within 0.5 m of the lake bottom. Differences between estimates of ichthyoplankton abundance based on the benthic sled and those based on the plankton net towed near bottom were examined along with interactions between gear, bottom depth, and time of day. Time of day was determined to be an important factor in comparing these two gear, but data were inconclusive as to the effect of depth on gear differences. Abundance of fish eggs calculated using sled tow data was significantly higher than that for the plankton net. For nighttime collections, density of alewife Alosa pseudoharengus larvae sampled in the plankton net significantly exceeded that for the sled, whereas density of spottail shiner Notropis hudsonius larvae based on sled data was significantly higher than that based on the plankton net for day sampling. Overall, the plankton net appeared to be adequate for sampling abundance of alewife larvae, while the sled was preferred for sampling fish eggs, spottail shiner larvae, and the following less common, but apparently demersal larvae: trout-perch Percopsis omiscomaycus, johnny darter Etheostoma nigrum, ninespine stickleback Pungitius pungitius, and slimy sculpin Cottus cognatus.  相似文献

The relative suitability of five instars of Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) as a substrate for the development of a larval parasitoid, Apanteles stantoni Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), was investigated. Maximum parasitism (22.25?±?1.21%) under laboratory conditions was observed in the early larval instars. The highest parasitoid emergence was recorded from the second (86.07?±?0.70%) and third (98.93?±?0.72%) instar larvae of D. indica, and that from the first larvae was 71.43?±?1.18%. The number of cocoons in each cluster, length and width of single cocoons, percentage emergence, sex ratio and adult longevity of A. stantoni collected from different instars of D. indica were also recorded. These results indicated that the life stage of the host when the parasitoid larvae complete their final instar is particularly important for their development. Therefore, considering the efficiency of parasitism and reproduction, the second-instar larvae of D. indica is the most suitable stage for mass rearing A. stantoni in the laboratory.  相似文献

Some mugilid fish are known to enhance small phytoplankton in freshwater macrophyte-free environments due to zooplankton depletion. This suggests that they may have negative effects on natural macrophyte beds of freshwater and oligohaline lagoons due to phytoplantkon enhancement. To test this hypothesis, we compared the ecosystems of control enclosures that contained no fish with those of enclosures stocked with Liza saliens at two different densities. The occurrence of L. saliens at a density of 321±92.42 kg ha–1 reduced cladoceran density, depleted epiphytic chironomid larvae, enhanced mayfly nymphs and cyclopoid copepods and reduced the organic matter content of sediment, all in comparison with control enclosures. At a density of 673±42.04 kg ha–1, L. saliens reduced total zooplankton density, depleted epiphytic and sediment dwelling chironomid larvae and enhanced mayfly nymphs. The organic matter contents of sediment was not affected. These results showed that L. saliens was very effective in reducing zooplankton density even when macrophyte biomass was high. However, these effects do not affect phytoplankton density, probably because zooplankton was dominated by species with low filter-feeding rates and macrophytes depleted nutrients.  相似文献
