Deserts and arid regions are generally perceived as bare and rather homogeneous areas of low diversity. The Sahara is the largest warm desert in the world and together with the arid Sahel displays high topographical and climatic heterogeneity, and has experienced recent and strong climatic oscillations that have greatly shifted biodiversity distribution and community composition. The large size, remoteness and long‐term political instability of the Sahara‐Sahel, have limited knowledge on its biodiversity. However, over the last decade, there have been an increasing number of published scientific studies based on modern geomatic and molecular tools, and broad sampling of taxa of these regions. This review tracks trends in knowledge about biodiversity patterns, processes and threats across the Sahara‐Sahel, and anticipates needs for biodiversity research and conservation. Recent studies are changing completely the perception of regional biodiversity patterns. Instead of relatively low species diversity with distribution covering most of the region, studies now suggest a high rate of endemism and larger number of species, with much narrower and fragmented ranges, frequently limited to micro‐hotspots of biodiversity. Molecular‐based studies are also unravelling cryptic diversity associated with mountains, which together with recent distribution atlases, allows identifying integrative biogeographic patterns in biodiversity distribution. Mapping of multivariate environmental variation (at 1 km × 1 km resolution) of the region illustrates main biogeographical features of the Sahara‐Sahel and supports recently hypothesised dispersal corridors and refugia. Micro‐scale water‐features present mostly in mountains have been associated with local biodiversity hotspots. However, the distribution of available data on vertebrates highlights current knowledge gaps that still apply to a large proportion of the Sahara‐Sahel. Current research is providing insights into key evolutionary and ecological processes, including causes and timing of radiation and divergence for multiple taxa, and associating the onset of the Sahara with diversification processes for low‐mobility vertebrates. Examples of phylogeographic patterns are showing the importance of allopatric speciation in the Sahara‐Sahel, and this review presents a synthetic overview of the most commonly hypothesised diversification mechanisms. Studies are also stressing that biodiversity is threatened by increasing human activities in the region, including overhunting and natural resources prospection, and in the future by predicted global warming. A representation of areas of conflict, landmines, and natural resources extraction illustrates how human activities and regional insecurity are hampering biodiversity research and conservation. Although there are still numerous knowledge gaps for the optimised conservation of biodiversity in the region, a set of research priorities is provided to identify the framework data needed to support regional conservation planning. 相似文献

We identified 14 emerging and poorly understood threats and opportunities for addressing the global conservation of freshwater mussels over the next decade. A panel of 17 researchers and stakeholders from six continents submitted a total of 56 topics that were ranked and prioritized using a consensus-building Delphi technique. Our 14 priority topics fell into five broad themes (autecology, population dynamics, global stressors, global diversity, and ecosystem services) and included understanding diets throughout mussel life history; identifying the drivers of population declines; defining metrics for quantifying mussel health; assessing the role of predators, parasites, and disease; informed guidance on the risks and opportunities for captive breeding and translocations; the loss of mussel–fish co-evolutionary relationships; assessing the effects of increasing surface water changes; understanding the effects of sand and aggregate mining; understanding the effects of drug pollution and other emerging contaminants such as nanomaterials; appreciating the threats and opportunities arising from river restoration; conserving understudied hotspots by building local capacity through the principles of decolonization; identifying appropriate taxonomic units for conservation; improved quantification of the ecosystem services provided by mussels; and understanding how many mussels are enough to provide these services. Solutions for addressing the topics ranged from ecological studies to technological advances and socio-political engagement. Prioritization of our topics can help to drive a proactive approach to the conservation of this declining group which provides a multitude of important ecosystem services. 相似文献

ORFans are open reading frames (ORFs) with no detectable sequence similarity to any other sequence in the databases. Each newly sequenced genome contains a significant number of ORFans. Therefore, ORFans entail interesting evolutionary puzzles. However, little can be learned about them using bioinformatics tools, and their study seems to have been underemphasized. Here we present some of the questions that the existence of so many ORFans have raised and review some of the studies aimed at understanding ORFans, their functions and their origins. These works have demonstrated that ORFans are an untapped source of research, requiring further computational and experimental studies. 相似文献

Humanin (HN), a recently identified neuroprotective factor against Alzheimer's disease-related insults, has been reported to function as an anti cell-death factor through multiple mechanisms. One mechanism, revealed in a glioblastoma cell line, involves the apoptosis-inducing protein Bax. This, in addition to the fact that HN is produced in certain normal tissues, such as testis, implies a potential role of HN in oncogenesis. A second mechanism, in neuronal cells, is via a putative cell-surface receptor. It is through this mechanism that HN exhibits its neuroprotective activity. 相似文献

The folding mechanism of integral membrane proteins has eluded detailed study, largely as a result of the inherent difficulties in folding these proteins in vitro. The seven-transmembrane helical protein bacteriorhodopsin has, however, allowed major advances to be made, not just on the folding of this particular protein, but also on the factors governing folding of transmembrane alpha-helical proteins in general. This review focusses on kinetic and equilibrium studies of bacteriorhodopsin folding in vitro. Oil-palm agriculture is the greatest immediate threat to biodiversity in Southeast Asia. Despite the efforts of environmentalists,
oil palm continues to expand across the tropics. Those concerned about the impacts of oil palm on biodiversity must face some
harsh social, economic, and ecological realities: (i) oil palm has been a very profitable crop; (ii) palm oil is used in so
many products that simple, direct actions, such as boycotts, are unlikely to succeed; (iii) there is currently insufficient
demand for certified sustainable palm oil and inadequate political clout from environmental groups in two of the biggest markets
for palm oil—China and India—to slow the rate of forest conversion; and (iv) oil-palm agriculture has improved the lives of
poor rural communities in Southeast Asia (although it has also disenfranchised some indigenous communities). To address the
threats posed by oil-palm agriculture to biodiversity, environmentalists must change the behavior of the palm oil business
through: (i) regulations to curb undesirable activities (e.g., a ban on converting forests to oil palm); (ii) financial incentives
to promote desirable behavior (e.g., production of certified, sustainable oil palm); (iii) financial disincentives designed
to discourage undesirable behavior (e.g., consumer pressure on major manufacturers and retailers to use palm oil that does
not come from plantations created at the expense of forests); and (iv) the promotion of alternative, more biodiversity-friendly
uses of forested land that might otherwise be converted to oil palm. There is no single best approach for dealing with the
oil-palm crisis in Southeast Asia; a mixture of regulations, incentives, and disincentives targeted at all sectors of the
oil-palm industry is necessary to protect the region’s rapidly disappearing forests. 相似文献
