Summary An associational plant refuge occurs when a plant that is susceptible to herbivory gains protection from herbivory when it is associated with another plant. In coastal North Carolina, the abundance of the palatable red alga Gracilaria tikvahiae is positively correlated with the abundance of the unpalatable brown alga Sargassum filipendula during times of increased herbivore activity. To see if grazing by the sea urchin Arbacia punctulata could generate this pattern, controlled experiments were conducted in out-door microcosms and in the laboratory. Gracilaria beneath a canopy of Sargassum was eaten significantly less than Gracilaria alone. When Arbacia were excluded, Gracilaria alone grew significantly more than Gracilaria beneath Sargassum, demonstrating that Sargassum is a competitor of Gracilaria. Experiments investigating Sargassum's deterrent role indicated that Sargassum decreased the foraging range of Arbacia and the rate at which it fed on Gracilaria. Additional experiments with plastic Sargassum mimics indicated that the decreased grazing on Gracilaria was not a result of Sargassum morphology, but was probably attributable to some chemical characteristic of Sargassum. The pattern of increased grazing in monocultures (only Gracilaria present) versus polycultures (both Gracilaria and Sargassum present) demonstrated in this study also has been demonstrated for plant-insect interactions in terrestrial communities. In these communities, insect density is higher in monocultures than in polycultures because insects find and immigrate to monocultures more rapidly, and once in a monoculture, they emigrate from them less often than from polycultures. In this study, urchins did not find and immigrate to monocultures more rapidly, nor did they tend to stay in them once they were found; in fact, they emigrated from monocultures of Gracilaria more rapidly than from Gracilaria and Sargassum polycultures. Increased grazing in Gracilaria monocultures resulted from increased rates of movement and feeding of individual herbivores, not from increased herbivore density as has been reported for terrestrial systems.  相似文献

Metabolic activities of different microorganisms (Bacillus subtilis, B. licheniformis and Aspergillus niger) and hydrolytic enzymes (concentrations: 1 to 200 mg enzyme solids g–1 feed) were studied individually and in combinations with respect to H2 and methane production from damaged wheat grains. Bacillus subtilis, B. licheniformis and pre-existing hydrogen producers (control) produced 45 to 64 l H2 kg–1 total solids and subsequently, with the help of added methanogens, 155 to 220 l methane kg–1 total solids could be produced. H2 production from damaged wheat grains could be decreased to 28% or enhanced up to 152% with respect to control, by employing various microbial and enzymatic treatments. Similarly, it has been made possible to vary methane production capacities from as low as 17% to as high as 110% with respect to control.  相似文献

In a previous study (Svirski et al., 1993), it was found that growth inhibition ofGracilaria spp., when cultured in the presence ofUlva cf.lactuca, was not due to shading or nutrient depletion, but seemed to be caused by competition for inorganic carbon or some type of allelopathy. In the present study, we attempted to differentiate between these two possible influences by (1) growing the two algae in biculture under various conditions, but keeping inorganic carbon levels constant and measuring net photosynthesis, respiration and growth rates, and by (2) measuring growth rates ofGracilaria spp. in the presence of extracts derived from media previously used to growUlva cf.lactuca.Both net photosynthesis and growth rates ofGracilaria spp. in biculture were inhibited, despite CO2 (and also HCO3 ) levels being kept constantly high in the culture media. It is likely that these responses were due to markedly enhanced rates of dark respiration inGracilaria spp. when grown together withUlva cf.lactuca. Growth ofGracilaria spp. was also inhibited by extracts derived from seawater in whichUlva cf.lactuca had previously been grown. The strong inhibition by ethyl acetate and chloroform extracts indicate an allelopathic effect onGracilaria spp.  相似文献

This paper describes experiments to grow a local and still unidentified species of Gracilaria in shrimp hatcheries in Ecuador. The experiments used outdoor tanks of 1 and 18 m3 capacity, with continuous aeration and water renewal every two and five days, respectively. The sea water (salinity 34 ppt) was enriched with Guillard's f/2 medium; light and temperature were monitored but not controlled. One kg of fresh seaweed, inoculated into each tank, produced a biomass of ca. 3 kg in a period of 35 days in the 1 m3 tank and 18 kg in 43 days in the 18 m3 tank. We therefore believe that it is technically feasible to use the large infrastructure of existing shrimp hatcheries in Ecuador to produce Gracilaria.  相似文献

The tissue culture of phycocolloid yielding seaweeds included preparation of axenic explants, callus induction, subculture of excised callus and regeneration of plantlets from pigmented callus in the laboratory. Treatment of algal material with 0.1–0.5% detergent for 10 min and 1–2% betadine for 1–5 min and 3–5% antibiotic treatment for 48–72 h successively enabled viable axenic explants to be obtained as high as 60% for Gracilaria corticata, Sargassum tenerrimum and Turbinaria conoides and 10% for Hypnea musciformis. Callus induction was more conspicuous in T. conoides than in the other three species investigated. Of the irradiances investigated, 30 μmol photons m−2 s−1 produced calluses in as many as 40% explants in G. corticata and T. conoides and 10% in H. musciformis and S. tenerrimum. The explants cultured at 5 and 70 μmol photons m−2 s−1 did not produce any callus in all the species studied except for H. musciformis in which 10% explants developed callus at 5 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Most of the species investigated showed uniseriate filamentous Type of growths and buds from cut ends and from all over the surface of explants. Nevertheless, T. conoides had three Types of callus developments, namely (1) uniseriate filamentous Type of outgrowths from the centre of the cut end of explant, (2) bubbly Type of callus and (3) club-shaped callus clumps. The subculture of T. conoides callus embedded in 0.4% agar produced two Types of filamentous growth, namely filiform (with elongated cells) and moniliform filaments (with round cells) in the 2 months period after inoculation. Further, friable callus with loose cells was also found associated with excised callus. The moniliform filaments showed prolific growth of micro-colonies resembling to somatic embryo-like growth which, in liquid cultures, differentiated and developed into propagules with deformed shoots and distinct rhizoids. The shoots of these propagules remained stunted with abnormal leaf stalks without forming triangular shaped leaves as the parental plant and rhizoids had prolific growth in the laboratory cultures. The excised callus of G. corticata continued to grow when transferred to liquid cultures and showed differentiation of new shoots within 10 days. The shoots grew to a maximum length of 5–6 cm in the 2 months period in aerated cultures in the laboratory. Dedicated to the memory of Late Dr. Rangarajan.  相似文献

Chemical structure and quality of agars from Gracilaria   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Agar polymers synthesized by species of the genus Gracilaria constitute a complex mixture of molecules, containing several extremes in structure. Sulphate hemi-esters, methyl ethers and pyruvic ketals can alter in a number of ways the structural regularity of agar based on strictly 3-O-linked β-l-galactopyranose and 4-O-linked α-l-galactopyranose residues. In comparison with agars from Gelidium and Pterocladia, agars from Gracilaria can have higher degrees of sulphation, methoxylation and pyruvylation. The gelling ability of agars from most of Gracilaria species is considerably improved by adopting, before extraction, an alkali pretreatment which converts α-l-galactose 6 sulphate into 3,6-anhydro-α-l-galactose. Native agars obtained from Gracilaria cannot be classified, with few exceptions, as bacteriological grade agar as they have a high content of methoxyls and consequently high gelling temperatures. On the contrary, the genus Gracilaria is considered the most important source of food and sugar-reactive grade agars. Among techniques which can be used to study algal polysaccharides, combined 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy represent the most effective and powerful method for the investigation of the chemical structure of agarocolloids.  相似文献

The influence of elevated CO2 concentrations on growth and photosynthesis ofGracilaria sp. andG. chilensis was investigated in order to procure information on the effective utilization of CO2. Growth of both was enhanced by CO2 enrichment (air + 650 ppm CO2, air + 1250 ppm CO2, the enhancement being greater inGracilaria sp. Both species increased uptake of NO3 with CO2 enrichment. Photosynthetic inorganic carbon uptake was depressed inG. chilensis by pre-culture (15 days) with CO2 enrichment, but little affected inGracilaria sp. Mass spectrometric analysis showed that O2 uptake was higher in the light than in the dark for both species and in both cases was higher inGracilaria sp. The higher growth enhancement inGracilaria sp. was attributed to greater depression of photorespiration by the enrichment of CO2 in culture.  相似文献

Methane in sulfate-rich and sulfate-poor wetland sediments   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Wetlands of northern Belize provide a unique opportunity to study methane production and emissions from marshes dominated by identical species (Typha domingensis, Cladium jamaicense) and genus (Eleocharis spp.), but differing substantially in the amount of sulfates present in the sediments. Some marshes occur on limestone marls rich in gypsum (CaSO4) while others are underlain by alluvial sands poor in sulfates. Concentrations of methane and sulfates in the sediment interstitial water are one or more orders of magnitude different for these two geological substrata averaging 139.2 and 14.9 M of CH4, and 0.08 and 11.53 mM of SO4 –2 2 on alluvial sands and limestone respectively. The amount of methane found in the internal atmosphere of plants from alluvial sands is significantly higher (6.3 M) than in plants from limestone (0.19 M). The average methane emissions measured in wetlands located on alluvial sands were 25.2 mg m–2 h–1 while emissions from marshes on limestone were only 2.4 mg m–2 h–1. These values extrapolated for the entire year and the respective wetland areas resulted in the estimate of total CH4 emissions from northern Belize of 0.066 Tg per year.  相似文献

High levels of naturally occurring selenium (Se) are often found in conjunction with different forms of salinity in central California. Plants considered for use in phytoremediation of high Se levels must therefore be salt tolerant. Selenium accumulation was evaluated for the following species under increasing salt (NaCl and CaCl) conditions:Brassica napus L. (canola),Hibiscus cannibinus L. (kenaf),Festuca arundinacea L. (tall fescue), andLotus tenuis L. (birdsfoot trefoil). The experimental design was a complete randomized block with four salt treatments of <1, 5, 10, and 20 dS m-1, four plant species, three blocks, and six replicates per treatment. Ninety days after growing in the respective salt treated soil with a Se concentration of 2 mg Se kg-1 soil, added as Na2SeO4, all plant species were completely harvested. Among the species tested, shoot and root dry matter yield of kenaf was most significantly (p<0.001) affected by the highest salt treatment and tall fescue and canola were the least affected species. Generally there was a decrease in tissue accumulation of Se with increasing salt levels, except that low levels of salinity stimulated Se accumulation in canola. Canola leaf and root tissue accumulated the highest concentrations of Se (315 and 80 mg Se kg-1 DM) and tall fescue the least (35 and 7 mg Se kg-1 DM). Total soil Se concentrations all harvest were significantly (p<0.05) lower for all species at all salt treatments. Removal of Se from soil was greatest by canola followed by birdsfoot trefoil, kenaf and tall fescue. Among the four species, canola was the best candidate for removing Se under the tested salinity conditions. Kenaf may be effective because of its large biomass production, while tall fescue and birdsfoot trefoil may be effective because they can be repeatedly clipped as perennial crops.  相似文献

DNA reassociation kinetics were used to determine nuclear genome organization and complexity in four species of Gracilaria (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta). In Gracilaria tikvahiae, G. caudata, G. cervicornis and G. divaricata, results indicate the presence of three second order components corresponding to fast, intermediate and slow fractions. Repetitive sequences varied from 13–46% and unique DNA ranged from 45–78%, Thermal denaturation (T m) indicated guanine + cytosine (G + C) levels of 41.9–46.0 mol % G + C. Microspectrophotometry with the DNA-localizing fluorochrome DAPI was used to quantify nuclear DNA content. Comparisons of mean nuclear DNA (I f) values to chicken erythrocytes (RBC) resulted in an estimate of 0.37–0.40 pg/2C genomes for the four Gracilaria species. Total agar content following alkaline pretreatment ranged from 7–15% dry weight. Gel strengths were generally below commercial levels, ranging from 40–260 g cm−2 Nuclear genome profiles developed from information for genome size, organization and complexity are compared with data for agar quantity and quality. Gel quality and quantity do not appear to be correlated with either large repetitive fraction DNA or a high degree of genome complexity as previously speculated.  相似文献

Estimates of nuclear DNA base composition by determination of thermal denaturation temperatures (Tm) indicate guanine + cytosine (G + C) levels of 35.4–46.8% for ten species of the Gracilariaceae, representing the generaGracilaria andHydropuntia. Tm values were found to be reproducible with variation among most samples and replicates of less than 1 °C and 2 mol%. Interspecific variation in G + C values was less than 11.4% amongGracilaria species. Calculation of intragenomic base pair composition distribution based on mid-resolution thermal denaturation (A 1 °C/min with 4s interval H and dT logging) indicated an inverse relationship between maximum similarity values and taxonomic rank. Intraspecific (population level) maximum similarity (homology) values were estimated to range from 79–90% inGracilaria tikvahiae (4 isolates). Interspecific values of 46–69% were found in 13 species ofGracilaria. Nucleotide distribution similarity values for the Gracilariaceae are compared with previous information for genome organization and complexity, genome size and karyotype patterns.Author for correspondence  相似文献

A study was conducted in Xiangshan Bay, Ningbo, China, using red alga Gracilaria lichenoides to alleviate nutrient pollution in shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and fish (Epinephelus awoara) culture ponds. Our results showed that G. lichenoides was efficient at absorbing inorganic nitrogen (IN) and inorganic phosphate (IP), and maintained a more stable dissolved oxygen (DO) level. A total of 506.5 kg (1,013 kg ha−1) of shrimp and 210.5 kg (421 kg ha−1) of fish were harvested from the shrimp/algae (SA) and fish/algae (FA) ponds, respectively. Only 53.5 kg shrimp were harvested from the shrimp pond without Gracilaria (S) due to anoxic asphyxia, and 163 kg fish were harvested from the fish culture pond without Gracilaria (F). Compared with using microalgae, bioremediation by macroalgae has no risk of harmful algal blooms (HABs), and it is easy to control seaweed biomass. During the experiment, there was a better environmental condition (lower chemical oxygen demand, IN, IP and chlorophyll a concentrations) in the ponds with Gracilaria. Furthermore, Gracilaria spp. can be used as food for abalone or other aquacultured animals and thus enhance economic return.  相似文献

Sargassum muticum was first observed in Scandinavia in Limfjorden (Denmark) in 1984, where it is now the most abundant and conspicuous macroalga. Despite the ecological importance of Sargassum, few studies have described seasonal patterns within Scandinavian Sargassum beds. We quantified the dynamics of macroalgae among years and seasons along a depth transect through a typical Sargassum bed in Limfjorden. The annual investigations (summer transects 1989–1999) showed a gradual increase in the dominance of Sargassum, especially at the 2–4-m depth interval. Significant seasonal dynamics in macroalgal abundance and assemblage structure were observed in this depth interval; the mean cover of Sargassum varied from ca. 5% (autumn and winter) to 25% (mid-summer). In comparison, encrusting algae had high and relatively stable covers throughout the year (ca. 20%). Other perennial macroalgae had low mean covers (<2%) characterized by a few patches of higher abundances. Except from a spring bloom, filamentous algae had low covers throughout the year. Within this relatively uniform bed, Sargassum abundance was positively related to boulders >10 cm in diameter and species richness was negatively correlated to depth and stones <10 cm in diameter, and non-correlated to other algal form-groups or grazer densities. Thus, in Limfjorden, the distribution of Sargassum is determined by large- (>6 m) and small-scale (<1 m) depth differences where low light limits Sargassum at depth, physical disturbance and sediment stress limits Sargasum in shallow waters, and the presence of stable boulder substratum facilitate Sargassum. Competition for space from other macroalgae and herbivory are probably of minor importance.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to examine the feasibility of biogas production from the anaerobic co-digestion of herbal-extraction residues with swine manure. Batch and semi-continuous experiments were carried out under mesophilic anaerobic conditions. Batch experiments revealed that the highest specific biogas yield was 294 mL CH4 g−1 volatile solids added, obtained at 50% of herbal-extraction residues and 3.50 g volatile solids g−1 mixed liquor suspended solids. Specific methane yield from swine manure alone was 207 mL CH4 g−1 volatile solid added d−1 at 3.50 g volatile solids g−1 mixed liquor suspended solids. Furthermore, specific methane yields were 162, 180 and 220 mL CH4 g−1 volatile solids added d−1 for the reactors co-digesting mixtures with 10%, 25% and 50% herbal-extraction residues, respectively. These results suggested that biogas production could be enhanced efficiently by the anaerobic co-digestion of herbal-extraction residues with swine manure.  相似文献

Three species of Gracilaria viz G. cervicornis, G. domingensis, G. verrucosa and Solieria tenera (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) have been studied for their monthly variation in dry wt yields, ash, soluble carbohydrate, protein, lipid and insoluble carbohydrate contents for one year. The dry wt yields were higher in G. domingensis. Soluble carbohydrate and ash contents showed an inverse relationship in all the species. Protein content was lower, below 5% of the dry wt for all the species. A comparison of protein:carbohydrate ratios showed a similarity between morphologically similar G. domingensis and G. cervicornis in that there was less variation in the ratio. From this, it is assumed that flattened morphology probably is more efficient in maintaining nutrient balance to keep up the growth rates.  相似文献

Thirty-nine subgeneric taxa of macroalgae have been collected from 83 sites in Georgian Bay, the North Channel and their drainage basin. There were 15 species in the Bay and Channel and 32 species in streams, rivers and impoundments in the basin. Only 8 of the Bay and Channel species were also found in the watershed. Cladophora glomerata was the most important species in Georgian Bay and the North Channel, having an estimated 640 × 103 m2 cover and 19 × 104 kg fresh weight standing crop. However, this species was largely concentrated on the southwestern shorelines of these water bodies. Its distribution along the northeastern shoreline appears to be limited by total ion and phosphorus levels. Chara globularis/vulgaris was the subdominant taxon in Georgian Bay and the North Channel with an estimated 70 × 103 m2 cover and 15 × 103 kg fresh weight biomass. This species was more widely distributed than C. glomerata. No other taxon contributed significantly to the standing crop including the frequently occurring Ulothrix zonata, Zygnema spp. and Spirogyra spp. The maximum benthic macroalgal biomass was estimated to be approximately 10% of the phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Tank cultivation of Gracilaria using fish effluents has permitted a production of 48 kg m–2 yr–1 and can reduce the dissolved nitrogen loads in the seawater. We report the yield, gel strength, gelling and melting point of agar from Gracilaria cultivated in tanks with seawater previously utilized in intensive, land-based salmon cultures and compared to a control using directly pumped seawater, over a study period of 22 months. The results show that the highest agar yield (20 to 22%) was obtained when Gracilaria was cultivated with pure seawater as compared to the fish effluents. The gel strength, gelling and melting point were higher in the agar obtained from algae cultured with fish effluents. During the spring, the gel strength, gelling and melting point increased in tanks with fish effluents and decreased in tanks with a supply of pure seawater.  相似文献

Summary In a continuing search for field sources of endomycorrhizal fungi that tolerate high levels of available phosphorus in soil, samples were obtained from long-established liberally fertilized hops (Humulus lupulus L.) and peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) fields. In hops fields, where extractable P (Bray) levels ranged from 21–196 ppm, spores of twoAcaulospora spp. and sixGlomus spp. were isolated. From peppermint fields with P levels of 44 to 244 ppm, spores of oneAcaulospora sp., fourGlomus spp. and oneGigaspora sp. were obtained. Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi were found colonizing most roots to some extent, despite the very high fertility of several sites. Although percentages of colonization in hops tended to be low, ranging from 0 to 9.3%, colonizations in peppermint roots were considerably higher averaging 26.5% between the sampled fields, notwithstanding P levels as high as 244 ppm. Curiously, considerable external VAM hyphae were found adherent to or entangling roots in many cases, even where percentage of root length with internal VAM structures was low. The functional benefit, neutrality, or detriment to plants of such high-P tolerant species remains to be determined.Contribution from the USDA-ARS, Horticultural Crops Research Laboratory and the Dept. of Soil Science, Oregon State University, in cooperation with the Oregon State University Agricultural Experiment Station, Corvallis, OR 97331. The responses of Gracilaria lemaneiformis, an easily epiphytized host, and the relatively resistant G. cornea mutant, to the green alga Ulva lactuca were studied using biculture experiments with and withoutantibiotics. Both Gracilaria species grown with and without U.lactuca showed different levels of growth rate, release of hydrogenperoxide and of halogenated hydrocarbons. These quantitative differencesled to a successful response against Ulva lactuca in the case of G.cornea mutant and to a failure in response in the case of G.lemaneiformis. The response of each Gracilaria species to U.lactuca was qualitatively similar to its response to bacteria. This suggeststhe involvement of oligosaccharide elicitors produced in the presence ofepiphytes and bacteria. A clear Gracilaria inhibition was demonstratedwith extracts of the culture medium. It appears that hydrogen peroxide, halogenated hydrocarbons and oligosaccharides may be components of theinhibitory activity of the extracts. The responses of Gracilaria speciesto the presence of U. lactuca suggest the characterization of adefence response.  相似文献

Amphipods on seaweeds: partners or pests?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Duffy JE 《Oecologia》1990,83(2):267-276
Summary Herbivorous marine amphipods have been implicated as important grazers on filamentous and ephemeral algae, and thus as beneficial to macrophytes in reducing overgrowth by epiphytic competitors. In North Carolina, USA, amphipods comprise 97% of all macroscopic animals inhabiting the abundant brown seaweed Sargassum filipendula, and peak in abundance between late winter and early summer. I used outdoor tank experiments to test the species-specific impact of common phytal amphipods on the growth of Sargassum and its epiphytes. The results show that seaweed-associated amphipods are a trophically diverse group that could either increase or decrease host fitness depending on their feeding preferences. The amphipods Ampithoe marcuzii, Caprella penantis, and Jassa falcata each significantly reduced growth of epiphytes on Sargassum plants relative to amphipod-free controls, while Ericthonius brasiliensis had no significant effect on Sargassum or its epiphytes. However, amphipod grazing was not necessarily beneficial to Sargassum. A. marcuzii consumed Sargassum in one outdoor tank experiment, reducing its mass by 11%, while Sargassum plants without amphipods grew by 81%. Epiphytes (mostly diatoms and the filamentous brown alga Ectocarpus siliculosus) and detritus remained abundant on these plants suggesting that A. marcuzii preferred the host to its epiphytes. Similarly, when given simultaneous access to Sargassum and to several common foliose and filamentous epiphytes in the lab, A. marcuzii ate Sargassum almost exclusively. The other three amphipods ate no macroalgae. In contrast to A. marcuzii, C. penantis consistently reduced epiphytes with no negative effect on Sargassum. Thus the species composition of the amphipod fauna can determine whether these animals increase or decrease seaweed fitness.  相似文献
