Indonesia has become the largest exporter of Eucheuma denticulatum, supplying the foreign demand for iota-carrageenan, and the increasing demand of the Asian food markets. Recent demand fluctuations for Kappaphycus alvarezii and E. denticulatum have resulted in price instability, and slowed the expansion of the less viable raft culture practice. A short 42–45 day harvest interval, propagule selection, and post-harvest treatment remain the causes of poor crop quality and low carrageenan yields.In 1988 the first processing of K. alvarezii commenced. By 1991 there were four factories exporting an alkali-treated chip product, and one producing carrageenan powder. In 1991, 3200t dry weight of the K. alvarezii harvest was processed locally. The viability of future natural food-grade carrageenan production is discussed in relation to new developments in the industry.  相似文献

The carrageenan-producing red algaKappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty was brought to Vietnam from Japan in 1993. Branch fragments of this species were cultivated in a pond, lagoon, inlet and offshore in Vietnam for the first time. The best daily growth rate (DGR) of plants grown in the lagoon area attained 9–11 % day–1 in May to June (cold season). The water temperature and salinity in this area ranged from 27.2–32.4 °C and 31.4–33.7 °C, respectively. DGR of plants grown in the inlet ranged from 7 to 9% day–1 in June. Grazing by fish has been observed to occur in this area. The DGR of plants grown in the pond ranged from 5–6% in January–July, but decreased to less than 4% day–1 in August (hot season). K. alvarezii in Vietnam showed a carrageenan yield of 18.8–24.6% and gel strength of 1566–1712 g cm–2. These values are similar ones obtained fromK. alvarezii cultivated in the Philippines and Indonesia.  相似文献

Technique improvement and cost reduction of branch culture, micropropagation, and callus production of carrageenan-yielding seaweeds Kappaphycus alvarezii and Eucheuma denticulatum is presented. Low cost branch culture is possible by enriching seawater with 0.1% coconut water with 1 mg l–1 indole-3-butyric acid for 24 h wk–1 or continuous culture with 0.01% Algafer, a Philippine fertilizer. Micropropagation of 0.5 cm explants had almost 100% new branch production demonstrating the viability of callus regenerated plants. The use of carrageenan as a media for callus production was not effective when compared to agar. Propagules of both species, transferred from the University of the Philippine Marine Science Institute (UPMSI) culture facility to the field, showed daily percent growth rates of 5 to 5.5% d–1 over 84 days. Based on the costs of the UPMSI laboratory, a culture facility in the seaweed farming area is estimated to cost about U. S. $22000 during the initial year and 58% less the second year.  相似文献

Growth rate, semi-refined and refined carrageenan yields, 3,6-anhydrogalactose and sulphate contents, and gel strength were investigated in four strains of Kappaphycus alvarezii (brown, green and red tetrasporophytic strains, and one strain derived from tetraspores progeny, called G11) farmed in subtropical waters of São Paulo State, Brazil. All studied strains showed higher growth rates from February to May, decreasing from July to December. The G11 strain exhibited lower growth rates, but had semi-refined and refined carrageenan yields significantly higher than the others and similar to a commercial sample. A negative correlation between growth rate and semi-refined carrageenan yield was verified for all strains. The brown strain had the lowest content of 3,6-anhydrogalactose, while G11 and green strains showed higher values. No clear pattern of variation and no relationship were observed for sulphate and gel strength. However, all strains presented gel strength values near the one obtained from commercial sample. These results show that the carrageenan extracted from brown, green, red, and G11 strains of K. alvarezii cultured in subtropical waters of São Paulo State, Brazil with commercial potentials.  相似文献

Kappaphycus alvarezii, cultured in a region deficient in nitrogen with intermittent application of 10 mM ammonium at three-day intervals for 1 hour, attained a daily growth rate of 4.6%, which was considered to be the optimum growth rate. Under such conditions, the C/N ratio was 29 with a carrageenan content of 58% and gel strength of 45–70 g cm–2. Although the West-African moist savanna zone has a high potential for crop production, yields on farmers' fields are, on average, far below this potential, mainly due to the low use of external sources of nutrients. Since the mid-1990s, it has become clear that in order to upgrade crop production to levels needed to sustain the growing population without further degrading the soil resource base, inorganic fertilizers are required. Due to the physico-chemical nature of these soils and the relatively high cost of inorganic fertilizers, a general consensus exists in the research and development community that these inorganic inputs need to be complemented with organic matter. Here, we explore options to produce organic matter in-situ and evaluate the impact of combining inorganic and organic sources of N on maize yields, focusing on the densely populated derived savanna (DS) benchmark of Benin Republic. Although most of the farmers (93%) in this benchmark use inorganic fertilizer, applications rates are low (on average, 27 kg N ha–1). A significant response to N was observed for 96% of the studied farmers' fields.Grain and herbaceous legumes were observed to produce between 383 and 8700 kg dry matter ha–1 in the benchmark area. Inoculation with Rhizobia and inorganic P additions were shown to significantly improve biomass production on sites with low contents of Rhizobia and P. Although maize grain yield was observed to increase significantly following a legume compared with following a maize crop or natural fallow, these increases were insufficient in the case of a cowpea crop or were obtained at the cost of leaving the field `idle' for a whole year in the case of a herbaceous Mucuna fallow. Topping up a cowpea haulms equivalent of 45 kg N ha–1 with 45 kg urea–N ha–1 was shown to give maize yields similar to the yields obtained after applying 90 kg urea–N ha–1 on the poorest fields. Moreover, on these fields, a positive interaction between cowpea–N and urea–N sources of 200 kg grain ha–1 was observed. On the richest fields, the effects of applied organic matter and fertilizer were additive.Agroforestry systems are alternative cropping systems that produce organic matter in-situ. As tree roots go down below the rooting depth of food crops, sub-soil fertility was observed to influence tree biomass production. Yield increases in tree-crop intercrop systems – such as alley cropping – in the absence of inorganic inputs are often reduced by the occurrence of tree-crop competition. In cut-and-carry systems, where tree prunings are harvested from a field adjacent to the crop land, increases in maize grain yield caused by addition of those prunings were observed to be on the low side. Mixing these residues with urea, however, was shown to lead to added benefits of about 500 kg grains ha–1, relative to the treatments with sole inputs of organic matter or urea. Although residue quality was shown to affect maize N uptake in a pot trial, its impact under field conditions was minimal for the range of considered residue qualities. In an alley cropping trial, maize yield was shown to be sustained on a non-degraded site and enhanced on a degraded site, when a minimal amount of mineral fertilizer was added with the prunings, whereas fertilizer application alone failed to do so in both cases.  相似文献

Crop and tree roots are crucial in the nutrient recycling hypotheses related to alley cropping systems. At the same time, they are the least understood components of these systems. The biomass, total N content and urea-derived N content of the Senna and maize roots in a Senna-maize alley cropping system were followed for a period of 1.5 years (1 maize-cowpea rotation followed by 1 maize season) to a depth of 90 cm, after the application of 15N labeled urea. The highest maize root biomass was found in the 0–10 cm layer and this biomass peaked at 38 and 67 days after planting the 1994 maize (DAP) between the maize rows (112 kg ha–1, on average) and at 38, 67 and 107 DAP under the maize plants (4101 kg ha–1, on average). Almost no maize roots were found below 60 cm at any sampling date. Senna root biomass decreased with time in all soil layers (from 512 to 68 kg ha–1 for the 0–10 cm layer between 0 and 480 DAP). Below 10 cm, at least 62% of the total root biomass consisted of Senna roots and this value increased to 87% between 60 and 90 cm. Although these observations support the existence of a Senna root `safety net' between the alleys which could reduce nutrient leaching losses, the depth of such a net may be limited as the root biomass of the Senna trees in the 60–90 cm layer was below 100 kg ha–1, equivalent to a root length density of only < 0.05 cm cm–3. The proportion of maize root N derived from the applied urea (%Ndfu) decreased significantly with time (from 21% at 21 DAP to 8% at 107 DAP), while %Ndfu of the maize roots at the second harvest (480 DAP) was only 0.6%. The %Ndfu of the Senna roots never exceeded 4% at any depth or sampling time, but decreased less rapidly compared to the %Ndfu of the maize roots. The higher %Ndfu of the maize roots indicates that maize is more efficient in retrieving urea-derived N. The differences in dynamics of the %Ndfu also indicate that the turnover of N through the maize roots is much faster than the turnover of N through the Senna roots. The recovery of applied urea-N by the maize roots was highest in the top 0–10 cm of soil and never exceeded 0.4% (at 38 DAP) between the rows and 7.1% (at 67 DAP) under the rows. Total urea N recovery by the maize roots increased from 1.8 to 3.2% during the 1994 maize season, while the Senna roots never recovered more than 0.8% of the applied urea-N at any time during the experimental period. These values are low and signify that the roots of both plants will only marginally affect the total recovery of the applied urea-N. Measurement of the dynamics of the biomass and N content of the maize and Senna roots helps to explain the observed recovery of applied urea-N in the aboveground compartments of the alley cropping system.  相似文献

DNA reassociation kinetics were used to determine nuclear genome organization and complexity in the carrageenophyteKappaphycus alvarezii. Results indicate the presence of three second order components corresponding to fast (12%), intermediate (38%) and slow (50%) fractions. Microspectrophotometry with the DNA-localizing fluorochrome DAPI confirmed ploidy level differences in the gametophytic and tetrasporophytic phases. Comparison of mean nuclear DNA (I f ) values to chicken erythrocytes (RBC) resulted in pg/2C genome estimates:Eucheuma denticulatum=0.35,E. isiforme=0.44,Kappaphycus alvarezii=0.32 andK. striatum=0.42. Karyological studies of tetraspore mother cells during diakinesis using aceto-orcein revealed a chromosome complement of 10 forEucheuma denticulatum andKappaphycus alvarezii.  相似文献

Summary In a humid tropical climate at Pattambi (10° 48 N, 76° 12 E), the evapotranspiration (ET) rates of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Thriveni) were 2.8–5.7 mm/day during the first crop season (May–September) and 6.2–9.1 mm/day during the second crop season (September–January). The crop was grown at the Station in the irrigated lowlands on sandy soils with average yields of 3025 and 2925 kg/ha in the first and second cropping seasons, respectively. The seasonal ET, water requirements, water use efficiency and field water use efficiency of the crop were 400 mm, 1150 mm, 7.56 and 2.63 kg/ha per mm in the first crop season and 650 mm, 1500 mm, 4.50 and 1.95 kg/ha per millimetre in the second crop season. Using the reference crop ET computed by Blaney-Criddle, Radiation, and Penman methods and measured evaporation from class A pan, Colorado and GGI 3000 pans, the crop coefficients were worked out. Correlations between weather parameters and the biomass of rice were obtained. The grain yield (Y, in kg/ha) of the crop was predicted using the equationY=1.71Y 0–56S+85F–2430 (N=8,r=0.920), whereY 0 is the sample of biomass of the rice at flowering in kg/ha,S andF are the duration of sunshine hours and maximum air temperatures (°C) between the 46th day of transplanting and maturity.  相似文献

Crop response, tree biomass production and changes in soil fertility characteristics were monitored in a long-term (1986–2002) alley-cropping trial in Ibadan, Nigeria. The systems included two alley cropping systems with Leucaena leucocephala and Senna siamea on the one hand and a control (no-trees) system on the other hand, all cropped annually with a maize–cowpea rotation. All systems had a plus and minus fertilizer treatment. Over the years, the annual biomass return through tree prunings declined steadily, but more drastically for Leucaena than for Senna. In 2002, the nitrogen contribution from Leucaena residues stabilized at about 200 kg N/ha/year, while the corresponding value for Senna was about 160 kg N/ha/year. On average, the four Leucaena prunings were more equal in biomass as well as in amounts of N, P and cations, while the first Sennapruning was always contributing up to 60% of the annual biomass or nutrient return. Maize crop yields declined steadily in all treatments, but the least so in the Senna + fertilizer treatment where in 2002 still 2.2 tonnes/ha of maize were obtained. Nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency was usually higher in the Senna treatment compared to the control or the Leucaena treatment. Added benefits due to the combined use of fertilizer N and organic matter additions were observed only for the Sennatreatment and only in the last 6 years. At all other times, they remained absent or were even negative in the Leucaenatreatments for the first 3 years. Most chemical soil fertility parameters decreased in all the treatments, but less so in the alley cropping systems. The presence of trees had a positive effect on remaining carbon stocks, while they were reduced compared to the 1986 data. Trees had a positive effect on the maintenance of exchangeable cations in the top soil. Exchangeable Ca, Mg and K – and hence ECEC – were only slightly reduced after 16 years of cropping in the tree-based systems, and even increased in the Senna treatments. In the control treatments, values for all these parameters reduced to 50% or less of the original values after 16 years. All the above points to the Senna-based alley system with fertilizers as the more resilient one. This is reflected in all soil fertility parameters, in added benefits due to the combined use of fertilizer nitrogen and organic residue application and in a more stable maize yield over the years, averaging 2.8 tonnes/ha with maximal deviations from the average not exceeding 21%.  相似文献

The bacterial isolates from normal and diseased branches of Kappaphycus alvarezii and Eucheuma denticulatum in the Philippines were examined for possible role in the development of the ice-ice disease. The numbers of bacteria on and in ice-iced branches were 10–100 times greater than those from normal, healthy ones. Gram-positive bacteria predominated in almost all branch sources, but with an increasing proportion of agar-lysing bacteria in branches suffering from the ice-ice disease. These agar-lysing bacteria were composed of yellow and non-pigmented, spreading colonies identified to the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium complex and the Vibrio group. Among isolates which mainly appeared on ice-iced branches, two strains, designated as P11 (Vibrio sp.) and P25 (Cytophage sp.), which showed pathogenic activity, were obtained. These strains caused early ice-ice whitening of K. alvarezii especially when subjecting branches to environmental stress, such as reduced salinity and light intensity, suggesting that these bacteria were occasionally pathogenic. This paper offers new evidence of bacterial role in the development of so-called ice-ice disease among farmed species of Kappaphycus.  相似文献

Decline in soil fertility accelerated by shorter fallow periods was expected to be a major constraint in slash-and-burn rice production systems in northern Laos. In this paper we describe relationships between fallow period, soil fertility parameters, weeds and rice yield. Soil infertility is not perceived a major yield constraint by the farmers. Of the various soil parameters observed only soil organic matter showed consistent association with rice yield (r=0.42, p<0.01). Fallow period and rice yield showed no association and the relationship between fallow and organic matter was very weak (r=0.16, p<0.01). Rice yield was negatively related to densities of Ageratum conyzoides and Lygodium flexuosum. Soil loss during the cropping period ranged from 300–29.300 kg ha–1. For the same period organic matter, total N, available P and available K content in the top 0–3 cm decreased by 11,12,17, and 17%, respectively, and loss of total N for the soil depth of 0–25 cm was estimated at 400 kg ha–1. Soil physical properties, moisture stress and available N are the most likely detriments to rice yields. Further attempts to relate soil properties to rice yield should include repeated measurements during the cropping season and observations on soil physical properties.The research presented was supported by the Provincial Agriculture Service, Luang Prabang, Laos, and the Swiss Development Cooperation.  相似文献

As part of the information needed for applied research on hybridization of these economically important species, the vegetative and reproductive structures ofEucheuma denticulatum (Burman) Collins and Hervey, andEucheuma alvarezii Doty being farmed in Danajon Reef, were studied. All cultured ‘strains’ suspected to have developed from original stocks apparently introduced into the area about twelve years ago were sampled monthly from February 1987 to November 1988. Analyses of fresh free-hand and plastic embedded sections revealed the sexual (male, female) and asexual (tetrasporic) structures inE. alvarezii var.tambalang Doty and the absence of the female inE. denticulatum, indicating the suitability of the former species for future manipulative experiments.  相似文献

Well established populations of Eucheuma denticulatum and E. striatum exist on the coral reef of the south west coast of Madagascar but natural beds are not dense enough to support high harvest pressure. A cultivation test was conducted on a 250 m2 module using the monoline method with 1560 seedlings of both species for over one year (weighings at 15 day intervals). E. denticulatum and E. striatum showed similar maximum growth rates (2.8 % d–1) occurring respectively in fall and in summer. For both species, minimum growth was observed during the warmest months (February–March). Mean growth rates, although relatively low, showed a high standard deviation, suggesting wide possibilities of strain selection. The preliminary selection experiment led to strains more resistant to breakage and having a growth rate up to 3.3 % d–1. The ice-ice disease is also present in this area and affects the algae mainly from January to March. Mean carrageenan yield for E. denticulatum was 42.5% ± 2.3 and rheological properties were above industrial standards, with a highly elastic gel and were thus suitable for commercial applications.  相似文献

It is generally thought that grain legume residues make a substantial net N contribution to soil fertility in crop rotation systems. However, most studies focus on effects of residues on crops immediately sown after the legume crop while in fact in many tropical countries with a prolonged dry season there is a large gap before planting the next crop with potential for nutrient losses. Thus the objectives of this study were* to improve the efficiency of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) stover-N (100 kg N ha –1) recycling by evaluating the effect of dry season stover management, i.e. surface application and immediate incorporation after the legume crop or storage of residues until next cropping in the rainy season. N dynamics (litterbags, mineral N, microbial biomass N, N 2O emissions) were monitored and 15N labelled residues were applied to assess the fate of residue N in the plant–soil (0–100 cm) system during two subsequent maize crops. Recycling groundnut stover improved yield of the subsequent maize (Zea mays L.) crop compared to treatment without stover. A higher N recycling efficiency was observed when residues were incorporated (i.e. 55% total 15N recovery after second maize crop) than when surface applied (43% recovery) at the beginning of the dry season. This was despite the faster nitrogen release of incorporated residues, which led to more mineral N movement to lower soil layers. It appears that a proportion of groundnut stover N released during the dry season was effectively captured by the natural weed population (54–70 kg N ha –1) and subsequently recycled particularly in the incorporation treatment. Despite the presence of weeds major leaching losses occurred during the onset of the rainy season while N 2O emissions were relatively small. There was a good correlation between soil microbial biomass N and first crop maize yield. Incorporation of groundnut residues led to small increases in economic yield, i.e., 3120 versus 3528 kg ha –1 over two cropping cycles in the surface versus incorporation treatments respectively, with corresponding residue 15N uptakes of 4 and 8%, while 15N recovery in water stable aggregates (9–15%) was not significantly different. In contrast, when stover was removed and applied before the first crop, yield benefits were highest with cumulative maize yields of 4350 kg ha –1 and residue utilization of 12%. However, N recycling efficiency was not higher than in the early incorporation treatment due to an asynchrony of N release and maize N demand during the first crop.  相似文献

As a possible means of improving the livelihoods of local villagers, off-bottom rope cultivation of commercial eucheumoids was investigated on the southern Kenyan coast at three sites, representative of the variety of environments. The morphotypes used were brown Eucheuma denticulatum and green and brown Kappaphycus alvarezii. The study was carried out over a 15 month period from August 2001 until October 2002. Relative growth rates were highest at a sandy flat in a mangrove system (Gazi; 5.6% d−1), and lowest in an intertidal reef flat (Kibuyuni; 3.2% d−1) with a lagoon being intermediate (Mkwiro; 4.8% d−1). The brown E. denticulatum had the highest growth rate of 4.7% d−1 compared to the green and brown K. alvarezii which were 4.3% d−1 and 4.2% d−1, respectively. Growth was more variable at Kibuyuni and Mkwiro. The growth was higher during the southeast monsoon (4.7% d−1) than during the northeast monsoon (4.0% d−1). This is part of a larger study and the effects of water motion, salinity, temperature, thallus nitrogen, and ‘ice-ice’ syndrome on growth of morphotypes is discussed. The water motion was observed to increase thallus nitrogen and hence the growth of eucheumoids. The ‘ice-ice’ condition affected both brown E. denticulatum and brown K. alvarezii but not green K. alvarezii. The results suggest that commercial cultivation of eucheumoids in Kenya will be feasible.  相似文献

The effect of tree row species on the distribution of soil inorganic N and the biomass growth and N uptake of trees and crops was investigated beneath a Grevillea robustaA. Cunn. ex R. Br. (grevillea) tree row and Senna spectabilisDC. (senna) hedgerow grown with Zea mays L. (maize) and a sole maize crop, during one cropping season. The hypothesis was that a tree with a large nutrient uptake would have a greater competitive effect upon coexisting plants than a tree that takes up less and internally cycles nutrients. The field study was conducted on a kaolinitic Oxisol in the sub-humid highlands of western Kenya. Soil nitrate and ammonium were measured to 300 cm depth and 525 cm distance from the tree rows, before and after maize cropping. Ammonium concentrations were small and did not change significantly during the cropping season. There was > 8 mg nitrate kg–1 in the upper 60 cm and at 90–180 cm depth at the start of the season, except within 300 cm of the senna hedgerow where concentrations were smaller. During the season, nitrate in the grevillea-maize system only decreased in the upper 60 cm, whereas nitrate decreased at almost every depth and distance from the senna hedgerow. Inorganic N (nitrate plus ammonium) decreased by 94 kg ha–1 in the senna-maize system and 33 kg ha–1 in the grevillea-maize system.The aboveground N content of the trees increased by 23 kg ha–1 for grevillea and 39 kg ha–1 for senna. Nitrogen uptake by maize was 85 kg ha–1 when grown with grevillea and 65 kg ha–1 with senna. Assuming a mineralisation input of 50 kg N ha–1season–1, the decrease in inorganic soil N approximately equalled plant N uptake in the grevillea-maize system, but exceeded that in the senna-maize system. Pruning and litter fall removed about 14 kg N ha–1 a–1 from grevillea, and > 75 kg N ha–1 a–1 from senna. The removal of pruned material from an agroforestry system may lead to nutrient mining and a decline in productivity.  相似文献

Carrageenan (E-407) and semi-refined carrageenan (E-407a) are some of the main additives used by the food industry for their gelling, emulsifying, thickening, and stabilizing properties. These are natural ingredients, which have been used for decades in food applications and are generally regarded as safe. Internationally, sub-tropical carrageenophytes (e.g., Kappaphycus alvarezii) are cultivated extensively as a source of raw materials for industrial extraction, and their use as potential candidates in integrated multitrophic aquaculture is tentative. We analyzed carrageenan yield (as a percentage of dry weight) and chemical composition (by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection and Fourier transform-Raman) of extracts produced by several carrageenophytes (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta), from different origins, e.g., K. alvarezii (Tanzania, Indonesia, the Philippines, Panama, and Mexico), Kappaphycus striatum (Madagascar), Eucheuma denticulatum (Tanzania, the Philippines, and Madagascar), Betaphycus gelatinum (the Philippines), Chondracanthus chamissoi, and Sarcothalia crispata (Chile). For comparison, some underutilized carrageenophytes were also analyzed, e.g., Chondrus crispus, Mastocarpus stellatus, Gigartina pistillata, Chondracanthus teedei var. lusitanicus, Chondracanthus acicularis, Calliblepharis jubata, Gymnogongrus crenulatus, and Ahnfeltiopsis devoniensis (Portuguese carrageenophytes). The main findings were that the highest carrageenan yield was obtained from K. striatum (Madagascar) with 75.6 (percent dry weight (% DW)); B. gelatinum and K. alvarezii (both from the Philippines) had yields of 71.0% and 68.0% (% DW), respectively; and G. pistillata (Portugal) 65.4% (% DW). This study was conducted to examine the effects of varying N rates and cropping systems (mixedversus pure stand) on the suitability of oats (Avena sativa L.) for estimating N2 fixed in sequentially harvested vetch (Vicia sativa L.) over two growing seasons (1984–85 and 1985–86). The N rates were, 20 and 100 kg N ha–1 in 1984–85 and 15 and 60 kg N ha–1 in 1985–86. In the 1984–85 season, vetch at maturity derived 76 and 63% N from fixation at the high and low N rates respectively. The corresponding values for the second season were 66 and 42%. Except in the 1985–86 season when some significantly higher values of % N2 fixed were estimated by using the reference crop grown at the higher (A-value approach) than at the lower N rate (isotope-dilution approach), both approaches resulted in similar measurements of N2 fixed. In the 1984–85 season, similar values of N2 fixed were obtained using either the pure or mixed stand oats reference crops. Although in the 1985–86 season, the mixed reference crop occasionally estimated lower % N2 fixed than pure oats, total N2 fixed estimates were always similar (P<0.05). Thus, in general, N fertilization and cropping system of the reference crop did not significantly influence estimates of N2 fixation.  相似文献

The yield and the quality of carrageenan depend, among other things, on the cultivar or strain and on the cultivation and processing techniques. This work presents carrageenan yields and some properties of Kappaphycus alvarezii under selected cultivation conditions i.e. cultivation period, depth and planting density. Growth rates (GR) ranged from 5.2–7.2% day−1, with the highest GR at 28 days, at 0–0.5 m depth, and planting density of 12 and 8.4 plants m−2. Highest productivity was observed in samples after 44 and 59 day cultivation period, which were grown at 0–0.5 m depth, and a planting density of 24 plants m−2. Carrageenan yields, iota fraction, viscosity, molecular weight and gel strength were measured. A cultivation period of 28 days during the winter had a significant higher carrageenan yield, while samples from 59 days showed a significantly higher iota fraction. Carrageenan also presented an increasing molecular weight under longer cultivation periods. A similar trend was observed for viscosity and gel strength. All samples cultivated in Brazil gave higher values when compared to a K. alvarezii commercial reference sample, with the exception of carrageenan yield values, which were lower in this study. Taking into account all parameters, the culture condition which provided the best carrageenan from a commercial perspective were 45 days of cultivation, growing at the surface, with a planting density of 12 plants m−2. Considering that this study was performed in the least favorable season (winter), these results indicate that the site is suitable for the implementation of commercial cultivation.  相似文献
