Leaves produced in 2004 of 422 species of Eucalyptus whose natural habitat is southern Australia were sampled at the Currency Creek Arboretum in South Australia where the annual (mainly winter) rainfall is about 400 mm. Tree height, leaf area, leaf dry weight, leaf nitrogen (N) concentration and leaf carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) were measured and the specific leaf area (SLA) calculated. Among the 422 species, the SLA varied from 1.5 to 8.8 m2 kg?1 and N concentration varied from 0.6 to 2.1%, much greater than in 64 species collected along an aridity transect from southwestern Western Australia to central Australia in 2003. Also, the range of leaf δ13C values was similar in the common garden to that across the aridity transect. For the 45 species present in both studies, the SLA and leaf N concentration in the common garden were similar to those measured in leaves along the aridity transect, indicating that these characteristics are inherent in the species and vary little with environment. The variation in leaf δ13C in the common garden was just as great as along the transect, but the values measured in the one location were poorly correlated with those along the transect. This was not expected, as the variation in δ13C at one common site in South Australia was anticipated to be less than along the aridity gradient where annual rainfall varied from 250 to 1200 mm. Path analysis on the 45 species common to both studies indicated that rainfall did not have a direct effect on δ13C, but the differences in δ13C resulted from indirect effects of rainfall on SLA and N concentration. δ13C was negatively correlated with SLA but positively correlated with N. Thus, both effects may compensate for each other so that no significant relationship between δ13C and rainfall was observable. However, there is a large degree of variation of δ13C at any level of rainfall. The origin and ecological implications of this observation are discussed.  相似文献

The leaves of 37 grass, herb, shrub and tree species were collected from a mesotrophic grassland to assess natural variability in bulk, fatty acid and monosaccharide delta(13)C values of leaves from one plant community. The leaf tissue mean bulk delta(13)C value was -29.3 per thousand. No significant differences between tissue bulk delta(13)C values with life form were determined (P=0.40). On average, C(16:0), C(18:2) and C(18:3) constituted 89% of leaf tissue total fatty acids, whose delta(13)C values were depleted compared to whole leaf tissues. A general interspecific (between different species) trend for fatty acids delta(13)C values was observed, i.e. delta(13)C(16:0)delta(13)C(xylose)>delta(13)C(glucose)>delta(13)C(galactose), was consistently observed. Therefore, we have shown (i) diversity in compound-specific delta(13)C values contributing to leaf bulk delta(13)C values; (ii) interspecific variability between bulk and compound-specific delta(13)C values of leaves of individual grassland species, and (iii) trends between individual fatty acid and monosaccharide delta(13)C values common to leaves of all species within one plant community.  相似文献

In 2010, measurements were conducted on the foliar delta13C, photosynthesis, CO2 diffusive conductivity, nitrogen content, photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE), and special leaf area (SLA) of Salix atopantha at different altitudes (2350 m, 2700 m, 3150 m, and 3530 m) in Wolong Natural Reserve. With the increase of altitude, the foliar nitrogen content (especially the nitrogen content per unit leaf area, N(area)) and the PNUE increased, and the foliar delta13C had a significant increase, with an increment of 1.4 per thousand per 1000 m altitude. The stomatal and mesophyll CO2 diffusion conductance also increased with increasing altitude, which had definite negative effect on the increase of foliar delta13C, but the effect was not strong enough. Comparing with CO2 diffusion conductance, carboxylation capacity was a more important factor limiting the P(c)/P(a), and even, the foliar delta13C. At altitude 2350-2700 m, air temperature was the main factor affecting the allocation of nitrogen in S. atopantha photosynthetic system, whereas at altitude 2700-3530 m, light could be the main affecting factor. No significant difference was observed in the SLA at different altitudes.  相似文献

Beech seedlings from 11 German climatic provenances were exposed to a realistically timed drought treatment in a greenhouse experiment. The stable isotope composition of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) was analysed in pooled bulk material of roots, stems and leaves, as well as in the aqueous extracts and starch fractions. The delta 13C values increased in bulk samples (BS) of roots, stems and leaves by drought, although no leaf growth occurred during the experimental period. A clear drought effect on delta 13C in aqueous extracts was detected in leaves. In aqueous extracts of stems and roots as well as in starch fractions of all organs, abundance of delta 13C also tended to be increased by drought, but this effect was not statistically significant. For both delta 13C and delta 15N, enrichment was observed from the site of uptake/ source to the site of use/sink. A gradient for delta 13C in all fractions from leaves (-29.49, -28.89 and -27.85 per thousand) to stems (-28.81, -27.48 and -26.98 per thousand) and to roots (-27.60, -26.37 and -26.48 per thousand) was detected in BS, aqueous extracts and starch, respectively. An opposite gradient for delta 15N was found in BS: 1.59 per thousand, 1.84 per thousand and 3.05 per thousand in roots, stems and leaves, respectively. delta 15N was neither affected by drought in the BS nor in aqueous extracts, but an effect of provenance was observed. Particularly in roots and stems, drought-sensitive provenances showed the strongest shifts in delta 13C induced by drought and the lowest delta 15N values. In the present experiment, delta 13C values were more affected by the environmental factor drought, while delta 15N values were more affected by the genetic factor provenance.  相似文献

We investigated leaf physiological traits of dominant canopy trees in four lowland Panamanian forests with contrasting mean annual precipitation (1,800, 2,300, 3,100 and 3,500 mm). There was near complete turn-over of dominant canopy tree species among sites, resulting in greater dominance of evergreen species with long-lived leaves as precipitation increased. Mean structural and physiological traits changed along this gradient as predicted by cost–benefit theories of leaf life span. Nitrogen content per unit mass (Nmass) and light- and CO2-saturated photosynthetic rates per unit mass (Pmass) of upper canopy leaves decreased with annual precipitation, and these changes were partially explained by increasing leaf thickness and decreasing specific leaf area (SLA). Comparison of 1,800 mm and 3,100 mm sites, where canopy access was available through the use of construction cranes, revealed an association among extended leaf longevity, greater structural defense, higher midday leaf water potential, and lower Pmass, Nmass, and SLA at wetter sites. Shorter leaf life spans and more enriched foliar 15N values in drier sites suggest greater resorption and re-metabolism of leaf N in drier forest. Greater dominance of short-lived leaves with relatively high Pmass in drier sites reflects a strategy to maximize photosynthesis when water is available and to minimize water loss and respiration costs during rainless periods. Overall, our study links coordinated change in leaf functional traits that affect productivity and nutrient cycling to seasonality in lowland tropical forests.  相似文献

The carbon isotope composition (delta(13)C) of CO(2) produced in darkness by intact French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) leaves was investigated for different leaf temperatures and during dark periods of increasing length. The delta(13)C of CO(2) linearly decreased when temperature increased, from -19 per thousand at 10 degrees C to -24 per thousand at 35 degrees C. It also progressively decreased from -21 per thousand to -30 per thousand when leaves were maintained in continuous darkness for several days. Under normal conditions (temperature not exceeding 30 degrees C and normal dark period), the evolved CO(2) was enriched in (13)C compared with carbohydrates, the most (13)C-enriched metabolites. However, at the end of a long dark period (carbohydrate starvation), CO(2) was depleted in (13)C even when compared with the composition of total organic matter. In the two types of experiment, the variations of delta(13)C were linearly related to those of the respiratory quotient. This strongly suggests that the variation of delta(13)C is the direct consequence of a substrate switch that may occur to feed respiration; carbohydrate oxidation producing (13)C-enriched CO(2) and beta-oxidation of fatty acids producing (13)C-depleted CO(2) when compared with total organic matter (-27.5 per thousand). These results are consistent with the assumption that the delta(13)C of dark respired CO(2) is determined by the relative contributions of the two major decarboxylation processes that occur in darkness: pyruvate dehydrogenase activity and the Krebs cycle.  相似文献

Quantifying water use of native vegetation is an important contribution to understanding landscape ecohydrology. Few studies provide long-term (more than one growing season) estimates of water use and even fewer quantify interseasonal and interannual variation in transpiration. Globally, changes in land use are significantly altering landscape ecohydrology, resulting in problems such as dryland salinity and excessive groundwater recharge. Estimating stand water use is complex in multispecies forests, due to the differences in relationships among sapwood area, basal area and tree size for co-occurring species. In this article, we examine seasonal and interannual variation in transpiration rate of the tree canopy of two co-occurring species (a conifer Callitris glaucophylla J. Thompson & L.A.S. Johnson and a broad-leaved Eucalyptus crebra F. Muell.) in an open woodland in eastern Australia. Evapotranspiration of understorey species was measured using an open-top chamber, and tree water use was measured using heat-pulse sap flow sensors. Annual stand transpiration was 309 mm in 2003, a year of below average rainfall, and 629 mm in 2004, a year with higher-than-average rainfall. Despite an almost doubling (522 vs. 1062 mm) of annual rainfall between 2003 and 2004, annual tree water use remained a constant fraction (59%) of rainfall, indicative of compensatory mechanisms linking annual rainfall, leaf area index and tree water use. Deep drainage was estimated to be 4% of rainfall (20.8 mm) in 2003 and 2% (21.2 mm) in 2004, indicating that this native woodland was able to minimize deep drainage despite large interannual variability in rainfall.  相似文献

For leaves, the light-capturing surface area per unit dry mass investment (specific leaf area, SLA) is a key trait from physiological, ecological and biophysical perspectives. To address whether SLA declines with leaf size, as hypothesized due to increasing costs of support in larger leaves, we compiled data on intraspecific variation in leaf dry mass (LM) and leaf surface area (LA) for 6334 leaves of 157 species. We used the power function LM=alpha LAbeta to test whether, within each species, large leaves deploy less surface area per unit dry mass than small leaves. Comparing scaling exponents (beta) showed that more species had a statistically significant decrease in SLA as leaf size increased (61) than the opposite (7) and the average beta was significantly greater than 1 (betamean=1.10, 95% CI 1.08-1.13). However, scaling exponents varied markedly from the few species that decreased to the many that increased SLA disproportionately fast as leaf size increased. This variation was unrelated to growth form, ecosystem of origin or climate. The average within-species tendency found here (allometric decrease of SLA with leaf size, averaging 13%) is in accord with concurrent findings on global-scale trends among species, although the substantial scatter around the central tendency suggests that the leaf size dependency does not obligately shape SLA. Nonetheless, the generally greater mass per unit leaf area of larger than smaller leaves directly translates into a greater cost to build and maintain a unit of leaf area, which, all else being equal, should constrain the maximum leaf size displayed.  相似文献

We measured seasonal and interannual variations in delta(13)C values within the carbon reservoirs (leaves and soil) and CO(2) fluxes (soil and ecosystem respired CO(2)) of an old growth coniferous forest in the Pacific Northwest USA with relation to local meteorological conditions. There were significant intra-annual and interannual differences in the carbon isotope ratios of CO(2) respired at both the ecosystem (delta(13)C(R)) and the soil levels (delta(13)C(R-soil)), but only limited variations in the carbon isotope ratios of carbon stocks. The delta(13)C(R) values varied by as much as 4.4 per thousand over a growing season, while delta(13)C(R-soil )values changed as much as 6.2 per thousand. The delta(13)C of soil organic carbon (delta(13)C(SOC)) and needle organic carbon (delta(13)C(P)) exhibited little or no significant changes over the course of this study. Carbon isotope discrimination within leaves (Delta(p)) showed systematic decreases with increased canopy height, but remained fairly constant throughout the year (Delta(p)=17.9 per thousand -19.2 per thousand at the top of the canopy, Delta(p)=19.6 per thousand -20.9 per thousand at mid-canopy, Delta(p)=23.3 per thousand -25.1 per thousand at the canopy base). The temporal variation in the delta(13)C of soil and ecosystem respired CO(2) was correlated ( r=0.93, P<0.001) with soil moisture levels, with dry summer months having the most (13)C-enriched values. The dynamic seasonal changes in delta(13)C of respired CO(2) are hypothesized to be the result of fast cycling of recently fixed carbon back to the atmosphere. One scaling consequence of the seasonal and interannual variations in delta(13)C(R) is that inversion-based carbon-cycle models dependent on observed atmospheric CO(2) concentration and isotope values may be improved by incorporating dynamic delta(13)C(R) values to interpret regional carbon sink strength.

Carbon-isotope ratios ([delta]13Cs) were measured for various bio-chemical fractions quantitatively extracted from naturally exposed and shaded leaves of the C3-Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) intermediate Clusia minor, sampled at dawn and dusk on days during the wet and dry seasons in Trinidad. As the activity of CAM increased in response to decreased availability of water and higher photon flux density, organic acids and soluble sugars were enriched in 13C by approximately 3.5 to 4%[per mille (thousand) sign] compared to plants sampled during the wet season. The induction of CAM was accompanied by a doubling in size of the reserve carbohydrate pools. Moreover, stoichiometric measurements indicated that degradation of both chloroplastic reserves and soluble sugars were necessary to supply phosphoenolpyruvate for the synthesis of organic acids at night. Results also suggest that two pools of soluble sugars exist in leaves of C. minor that perform CAM, one a vacuolar pool enriched in 13C and the second a transport pool depleted in 13C. Estimates of carbon-isotope discrimination expressed during CAM, derived from the trafficking among inorganic carbon, organic acids, and carbohydrate pools overnight, ranged from 0.9 to 3.1%[per mille (thousand) sign]. The [delta]13C of structural material did not change significantly between wet and dry seasons, indicating that most of the carbon used in growth was derived from C3 carboxylation.  相似文献

The litters, bulk soils, and soil particle-size fractions were sampled from three typical natural forests, i.e., broadleaf Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) mixed forest (PB, altitude 740 m), spruce-fir (Picea asperata-Abies nephrolepis) forest (SF, altitude 1350 m), and Erman's birch (Betula ermanii) forest (EB, altitude 1996 m), on the northern slope of Changbai Mountains to analyze their organic matter delta13C values, and the intact soil cores (20 cm depth) from EB (high altitude) were relocated to PB and SF (low altitudes) for a year to study the responses of the delta13C values to simulated warming. It was shown that the litters had a significantly lower delta13C value than the soils, and the delta13C values of the litters and soils increased downward through the litter- and soil layers in all the three typical forest types. Soil particle-size fractions had an increased delta13C value with decreasing particle size fractions. The delta13C value of the litters was in the order of SF (-28.3 per thousand) >PB (-29.0 per thousand) >EB (-29.6 per thousand), while that of the soils was in the order of EB (-25.5 per thousand) >PB (-25.8 per thousand) >SF (-26.2 per thousand). Over one-year soil warming (an increment of 0.7 degrees C - 2.9 degrees C) , the delta13C values of the bulk soils and soil particle-size fractions all presented a decreasing trend, and the decrement of the delta13C value was larger in <2 microm (0.48 per thousand) and 2-63 microm fractions (0.47 per thousand) than in >63 microm fraction (0.33 per thousand). The results suggested that climate warming could have great effects on the older organic carbon associated with fine soil particle-size fractions.  相似文献

Annual or biannual time courses of plant delta13C (delta13C(p)) over the last century (70-100 years) were recorded for leafbases of four grasstrees (Xanthorrhoea preissii) at four sites in mediterranean Australia and wood of four conifers (Widdringtonia cedarbergensis) at two sites in mediterranean South Africa. There was a strong downward trend of 2-5.5(per thousand ) from 1935 to 1940 to the present in the eight plants. Trends were more variable from 1900 to 1940 with plants at two sites of each species showing an upward trend of 1-2.5 per thousand. Accepting that delta13C of the air (delta13C(a)) fell by almost 2 per thousand over the last century, the ratio of leaf intercellular CO2 to atmospheric CO2 (c(i)/c(a)) rose in five plants and remained unchanged in three over that period. Changes in c(i)/c(a) rather than delta13C(a) were more closely correlated with changes in delta13C(p) and accounted for 6.7-71.8% (22.6 c(i)/c(a)) and 28.2-93.3% (delta13C(a)) of the variation in delta13C(p). We doubt that possible changing patterns of rainfall, water availability, temperature, shade, air pollution or clearing for agriculture have contributed to the overall trend for c(i)/c(a) to rise over time. Instead, we provide evidence (concentrations of Fe and Mn in the grasstree leafbases) that decreasing photosynthetic capacity associated with falling nutrient availability due to the reduced occurrence of fire may have contributed to rising c(i)/c(a). Intrinsic water-use efficiency (W(i)) as a function of (c(a)-c(i)) usually increased linearly over the period, with the two exceptions explained by their marked increase in c(i)/c(a). We conclude that grasstrees may provide equivalent delta13C(p )and W(i) data to long-lived conifers and that their interpretation requires a consideration of the causes of variation in both c(i)/c(a )and delta13C(a).  相似文献

Stable hydrogen and carbon isotopic compositions of individual n-alkanes were determined for various terrestrial plants (33 samples including 27 species) and aquatic plants (six species) in natural environments from Japan and Thailand. In C3 plants, n-alkanes extracted from angiosperms have a deltaD value of -152+/-26 per thousand (relative to Standard Mean Ocean Water [SMOW]) and delta13C value of -36.1+/-2.7 per thousand (relative to Peedde Belemnite [PDB]), and those from gymnosperms have a deltaD value of -149+/-16 per thousand and delta13C value of -31.6+/-1.7 per thousand. Angiosperms have n-alkanes depleted in 13C relative to gymnosperms. n-Alkanes from C4 plants have a deltaD value of -171+/-12 per thousand and delta13C value of -20.5+/-2.1 per thousand, being a little depleted in D and much enriched in 13C compared to C3 plants. n-Alkanes of CAM plants are a little depleted in D and vary widely in delta13C relative to those of C3 and C4 plants. In aquatic plants, n-alkanes from freshwater plants have a deltaD value of -187+/-16 per thousand and delta13C value of -25.3+/-1.9 per thousand, and those from seaweeds have a deltaD value of -155+/-34 per thousand and delta13C value of -22.8+/-1.0 per thousand. All n-alkanes from various plant classes are more depleted in D and 13C relative to environmental water and bulk tissue, respectively. In addition, the hydrogen and carbon isotopic fractionations during n-alkane synthesis are distinctive for these various plant classes. While C3 plants have smaller isotopic fractionations in both D and 13C, seaweed has larger isotopic fractionations.  相似文献

The aim of our study was to assess the intraspecific variation of a range of leaf attributes and carbon isotope discrimination (Δ), in Quercus suber, along an 800 mm rainfall gradient in Portugal. We measured specific leaf area (SLA), leaf thickness (LT) and density, and used leaf carbon isotope content as an integrated record of water use efficiency. The values of SLA of Q. suber were strongly, positively correlated with rainfall, decreasing as rainfall decreased. This reduction was mainly driven by LT, which was tightly correlated with SLA (= −0.80, P < 0.001), and steadily increased with declining rainfall. The significant increase in carbon isotope discrimination towards the wetter end of the gradient, with a difference of 4.2‰ in Δ between the two extremes, suggests a strong adjustment of leaf gas exchange to water availability. Leaf changes associated with precipitation in Q. suber thus seem to influence water economy, since reduction of SLA with the increase of LT with aridity improves water use efficiency. These data suggest that this evergreen tree species relies on its foliage plasticity and physiology to overcome water shortage.  相似文献

It is unclear whether the shift in leaf traits between species of high- and low-rainfall sites is caused by low rainfall or by species replacement, because leaf traits vary substantially among species and sites. Our objective was to test if the within-species relationship between specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf N concentration (N(mass) ) shifts across a rainfall gradient in the semi-arid sandy lands of northern China. Data for SLA and N(mass) of dominant species and related canopy and soil variables were collected from 33 plots along a rainfall transect (270-390 mm) having similar temperatures in the Mu Us, Inner Mongolia. We further investigated the generality of Mu Us data using 12 additional plots in the southeastern Qaidam Basin, Qinghai. Artemisia ordosica is a widespread species in both regions. Across and within species, the positive SLA-N(mass) relationship shifted between two plant groups in the lowest rainfall plots (270 mm) and other higher rainfall plots (320-390 mm), which was confirmed by additional data from Qinghai. For A. ordosica populations, leaf area index (LAI) decreased and N(mass) increased with decreasing rainfall, while the foliage N pool and SLA varied little. Rainfall was the limiting factor that determined variations in N(mass) and LAI. Accordingly, N(mass) /SLA ratios continually increased with decreasing LAI along the rainfall gradient (r = -0.76, P < 0.001). Results indicate a low rainfall-induced shift in the SLA-N(mass) relationship associated with changes in LAI and foliage N pool, suggesting a link between leaf characteristics and ecosystem function.  相似文献

We describe an open leaf gas exchange system coupled to a tunable diode laser (TDL) spectroscopy system enabling measurement of the leaf respiratory CO(2) flux and its associated carbon isotope composition (delta(13)C(Rl)) every 3 min. The precision of delta(13)C(Rl) measurement is comparable to that of traditional mass spectrometry techniques. delta(13)C(Rl) from castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) leaves tended to be positively related to the ratio of CO(2) produced to O(2) consumed [respiratory quotient (RQ)] after 24-48 h of prolonged darkness, in support of existing models. Further, the apparent fractionation between respiratory substrates and respired CO(2) within 1-8 h after the start of the dark period was similar to previous observations. In subsequent experiments, R. communis plants were grown under variable water availability to provide a range in delta(13)C of recently fixed carbohydrate. In leaves exposed to high light levels prior to the start of the dark period, CO(2) respired by leaves was up to 11 per thousand more enriched than phloem sap sugars within the first 10-15 min after plants had been moved from the light into the dark. The (13)C enrichment in respired CO(2) then decreased rapidly to within 3-7 per thousand of phloem sap after 30-60 min in the dark. This strong enrichment was not observed if light levels were low prior to the start of the dark period. Measurements of RQ confirmed that carbohydrates were the likely respiratory substrate for plants (RQ > 0.8) within the first 60 min after illumination. The strong (13)C enrichment that followed a high light-to-dark transition coincided with high respiration rates, suggesting that so-called light-enhanced dark respiration (LEDR) is fed by (13)C-enriched metabolites.  相似文献

Changes in specific leaf area (SLA, projected leaf area per unit leaf dry mass) and nitrogen partitioning between proteins within leaves occur during the acclimation of plants to their growth irradiance. In this paper, the relative importance of both of these changes in maximizing carbon gain is quantified. Photosynthesis, SLA and nitrogen partitioning within leaves was determined from 10 dicotyledonous C3 species grown in photon irradiances of 200 and 1000 µmol m?2 s?1. Photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area measured under the growth irradiance was, on average, three times higher for high‐light‐grown plants than for those grown under low light, and two times higher when measured near light saturation. However, light‐saturated photosynthetic rate per unit leaf dry mass was unaltered by growth irradiance because low‐light plants had double the SLA. Nitrogen concentrations per unit leaf mass were constant between the two light treatments, but plants grown in low light partitioned a larger fraction of leaf nitrogen into light harvesting. Leaf absorptance was curvilinearly related to chlorophyll content and independent of SLA. Daily photosynthesis per unit leaf dry mass under low‐light conditions was much more responsive to changes in SLA than to nitrogen partitioning. Under high light, sensitivity to nitrogen partitioning increased, but changes in SLA were still more important.  相似文献

Variation in the C18OO content of atmospheric CO2 (delta18Oa) can be used to distinguish photosynthesis from soil respiration, which is based on carbonic anhydrase (CA)-catalyzed 18O exchange between CO2 and 18O-enriched leaf water (delta18Ow). Here we tested the hypothesis that mean leaf delta18Ow and assimilation rates can be used to estimate whole-leaf C18OO flux (isoflux), ignoring intraleaf variations in CA activity and gas exchange parameters. We observed variations in CA activity along the leaf (> 30% decline from the leaf center toward the leaf ends), which were only partially correlated to those in delta18Ow (7 to 21 per thousand), delta18O and delta13C of leaf organic matter (25 to 30 per thousand and -12.8 to -13.2 per thousand, respectively), and substomatal CO2 concentrations (intercellular CO2 concentrations, c(i), at the leaf center were approximately 40% of those at the leaf tip). The combined effect of these variations produced a leaf-integrated isoflux that was different from that predicted based on bulk leaf values. However, because of canceling effects among the influencing parameters, isoflux overestimations were only approximately 10%. Conversely, use of measured parameters from a leaf segment could produce large errors in predicting leaf-integrated C18OO fluxes.  相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal fluctuations in the photosynthetic performance and water relations of two co-occurring Mediterranean shrubs, Erica multiflora and Globularia alypum were monitored throughout two consecutive years at Garraf Natural Park in north-east Spain. Leaf gas exchange rates, chlorophyll fluorescence and shoot water potentials were measured once each season. Leaf nitrogen and carbon concentrations, leaf delta13C and delta15N and specific leaf area (SLA) were also measured once a year (August) on well developed mature leaves. Globularia alypum experienced seasonal fluctuations in their water potential, with the lowest values recorded in summer, whereas E. multiflora did not show significant differences in water potential among seasons. Moreover, lower water potentials were found in G. alypum than in E. multiflora throughout the entire study, suggesting that the latter behaved as a drought-avoiding species, whereas the former tolerated lower water potentials. In both species, maximum leaf gas exchange rates were observed in autumn and secondarily in spring; in contrast, photosynthetic and transpiration rates reached absolute minima in summer. The stronger fluctuations in water potential and leaf gas exchange rates found in G. alypum compared to E. multiflora, suggest that G. alypum is, sensu Levitt (1980), a water spender, whereas E. multiflora is a water conservative. This hypothesis is further supported by a higher integrated water-use efficiency (higher delta13C values) and a higher degree of sclerophylly (lower SLA) in E. multiflora in comparison with G. alypum. Globularia alypum showed higher leaf gas exchange rates and higher predawn potential photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) than E. multiflora during most of the study. In spring and autumn, predawn Fv/Fm values were within the optimal range, whereas chronic photoinhibition in summer and winter was detected in both species. However, whereas both species could maintain positive photosynthetic rates in winter, frequent negative values were found in summer, suggesting higher levels of stress during the drought period. These results together with the high correlations that were found between the net photosynthetic rates and several parameters of water availability (accumulated rainfall, soil moisture or midday water potential) provided further evidence of the key role of water availability in the regulation of the photosynthetic rates in these Mediterranean species. Warmer and drier conditions in future decades, as a consequence of climate change, may alter the present, slight competitive advantage of G. alypum and the fitness of both shrub species within semi-arid Mediterranean environments.  相似文献
