 The experiments aimed to determine the relationship between density of propagules in soil and initiation and spread of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus in the cotton roots. As few as 10 propagules of Glomus mosseae in approximately 95 g soil located in a band 25 cm below the soil surface established mycorrhizas in more than 80% of cotton roots at the point of inoculation within 36 days. Secondary spread was initiated 10–13 days after primary colonisation in treatments inoculated with one, 10 or 100 propagules. Spread of mycorrhizas within the root system was rapid from 100 propagules and was slower with fewer propagules. Accepted: 26 August 1999  相似文献

The hyphal healing mechanism (HHM) has been shown to differ between Gigasporaceae and Glomeraceae. However, this process has not been considered under (severe) physical stress conditions. Scutellospora reticulata and Glomus clarum strains were cultured monoxenically. The impact of long distance separating cut extremities of hyphae and of multiple injuries within hyphae on the HHM was monitored. For long distances (>5000 microm) separating cut extremities, hyphae healing was observed in half the cases in S. reticulata and was absent in G. clarum. For multiple-injured hyphae, the HHM was always oriented towards the complete recovery of hyphae integrity in S. reticulata, while in G. clarum, the growing hyphal tips (GHTs) could indifferently reconnect cut sections, by-pass cut sections or develop into the environment. Hyphae behaviour under severe physical stress clearly differentiated S. reticulata from G. clarum, suggesting that both fungi have developed different strategies for colony growth to survive under adverse conditions.  相似文献

To elucidate the quantitative and qualitative expression of fern development, various features of leaf-size and morphology were examined on leaves ofPolystichum tripteron (Aspidiaceae) in Japan. Among ten parameters, the number of branches of the leaf midrib (NV) proved to be the most successful for discrimination between fertile and sterile leaf populations. In the phase-change from sterile to fertile leaves, the NV parameter also gave the strongest correlation, increasing with fertility (r = 0.983), and is therefore a useful tool for research into the life history characteristics of ferns.Contribution no. 2751 from the Institute of Low Temperature Science, Hokkaido University.  相似文献
