The endoparasitic dinoflagellate Amoebophrya ceratii (Koeppen) Cachon uses a number of its free‐living relatives as hosts and may represent a species complex composed of several host‐specific parasites. Two thecate host–parasite systems [Amoebophrya spp. ex Alexandrium affine (Inoue and Fukuyo) Balech and ex Gonyaulax polygramma Stein], were used to test the hypothesis that two strains of Amoebophrya have a high degree of host specificity. To test this hypothesis, a series of cross‐infection experiments were conducted, with 10 thecate and three athecate dinoflagellate species as potential hosts. Surprisingly, the two strains of Amoebophrya lacked host specificity and had wider host ranges than previously recognized. Among the host species tested, Amoebophrya sp. ex Alexandrium affine was capable of infecting only species of genus Alexandrium (Alexandrium affine, Alexandrium catenella, and Alexandrium tamarense), while the parasite from Gonyaulax polygramma infected species covering five genera (Alexandrium, Gonyaulax, Prorocentrum, Heterocapsa, and Scripsiella). In the context of previous reports, these results suggest that host specificity of Amoebophrya strains varies from extremely species‐specific to rather unspecific, with specificity being stronger for strains isolated from athecate hosts. Information on host specificity of Amoebophrya strains provided here will be helpful in assessing the possibility of using these parasites as biological control agents for harmful algal blooms, as well as in defining species of Amoebophrya in the future.  相似文献

Many crustaceans live in intimate association with larger host animals, mostly for shelter and food. Host recognition and location behaviors by these crustaceans, and other symbionts, are vital in the life history of most symbioses. The pinnotherid crab Tunicotheres moseri (Rathbun, 1918) is a common symbiont with various solitary ascidians throughout its reported range of Jamaica, Venezuela, and West Florida. Sensory cues affecting host recognition, host use, and mate acquisition in the West Florida crab population were the focus of this study. T. moseri responded to host generated and conspecific (males responded to non-gravid females) waterborne chemical cues. Although host generated waterborne chemical cues were recognized by T. moseri, access to direct contact (which could involve chemical, visual and tactile cues) with host ascidians triggered much stronger responses. Results of conditioning trials suggest that T. moseri is a generalist, but prefers Styela plicata even after conditioning with the novel host species Molgula occidentalis and Phallusia nigra. These results show that T. moseri employs the use of multiple senses in establishing symbioses with host tunicates, and the plasticity of the responses allow potentially novel tunicates to serve as hosts. Finally, this study shows that male T. moseri, which typically only enter tunicates for breeding purposes, use waterborne cues to find tunicates housing potential female mates.  相似文献

Many laboratory studies and epidemiological observations confirm that nematodes prevent some immune-mediated diseases. The development of immunologically well-defined laboratory models of intestinal nematode infection has allowed significant advances to be made in understanding the immunological basis of effector mechanisms operating during infection under controlled laboratory conditions. The Heligmosomoides polygyrus- mouse system is used for studies of parasite immunomodulation. H. polygyrus causes a chronic, asymptomatic intestinal infection and effectively maintains both local and systemic tolerance to reduce allergic and autoimmune inflammation. However, exposure of mice to H. polygyrus antigen reduced spontaneous and glucocorticoid-induced apoptosis of CD4- positive T cells in mesenteric lymph node (MLN). In this study we evaluate the proliferation, cytokine secretion, cell cycle progression and expression of apoptosis related genes in MLN CD4 T cells of uninfected and H. polygyrus infected mice ex vivo and in vitro after restimulation with parasite excretory secretory antigen (ESAg), somatic antigen (SAg) and fraction 9 (F9Ag) of somatic antigen. For the first time we explain the influence of H. polygyrus antigens on the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. We found that the proliferation provoked by fraction 9 and inhibition of apoptosis was dependent on a low Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, dramatical upregulation of survivin, D1 cyclin, P-glycoprotein, and loss of p27Kip1 protein with inhibition of active caspase-3 but not caspase- 8.  相似文献

To clarify the mechanisms of Nosema ceranae parasitism, we deep-sequenced both honey bee host and parasite mRNAs throughout a complete 6-day infection cycle. By time-series analysis, 1122 parasite genes were significantly differently expressed during the reproduction cycle, clustering into 4 expression patterns. We found reactive mitochondrial oxygen species modulator 1 of the host to be significantly down regulated during the entire infection period. Our data support the hypothesis that apoptosis of honey bee cells was suppressed during infection. We further analyzed genome-wide genetic diversity of this parasite by comparing samples collected from the same site in 2007 and 2013. The number of SNP positions per gene and the proportion of non-synonymous substitutions per gene were significantly reduced over this time period, suggesting purifying selection on the parasite genome and supporting the hypothesis that a subset of N. ceranae strains might be dominating infection.  相似文献

Ecological communities are partly structured by indirect interactions, where one species can indirectly affect another by altering its interactions with a third species. In the absence of direct predation, nonconsumptive effects of predators on prey have important implications for subsequent community interactions. To better understand these interactions, we used a Daphnia‐parasite‐predator cue system to evaluate if predation risk affects Daphnia responses to a parasite. We investigated the effects of predator cues on two aspects of host–parasite interactions (susceptibility to infection and infection intensity), and whether or not these effects differed between sexes. Our results show that changes in response to predator cues caused an increase in the prevalence and intensity of parasite infections in female predator‐exposed Daphnia. Importantly, the magnitude of infection risk depended on how long Daphnia were exposed to the cues. Additionally, heavily infected Daphnia that were constantly exposed to cues produced relatively more offspring. While males were ~5× less likely to become infected compared to females, we were unable to detect effects of predator cues on male Daphnia–parasite interactions. In sum, predators, prey, and their parasites can form complex subnetworks in food webs, necessitating a nuanced understanding of how nonconsumptive effects may mediate these interactions.  相似文献

Parasitic infections consist of a succession of steps during which hosts and parasites interact in specific manners. At each step, hosts can use diverse defence mechanisms to counteract the parasite's attempts to invade and exploit them. Of these steps, the penetration of parasites into the host is a key step for a successful infection and the epithelium is the first line of host defence. The shedding of this protective layer (moulting) is a crucial feature in the life cycle of several invertebrate and vertebrate taxa, and is generally considered to make hosts vulnerable to parasites and predators. Here, we used the crustacean Daphnia magna to test whether moulting influences the likelihood of infection by the castrating bacterium Pasteuria ramosa. This parasite is known to attach to the host cuticula before penetrating into its body. We found that the likelihood of successful parasite infection is greatly reduced if the host moults within 12 h after parasite exposure. Thus, moulting is beneficial for the host being exposed to this parasite. We further show that exposure to the parasite does not induce hosts to moult earlier. We discuss the implications of our findings for host and parasite evolution and epidemiology.  相似文献

Transmission to a new host is a critical step in the life cycle of a parasite. Variation in the characteristics of the transmission process, for example, due to host demography, is assumed to select for different variants of the parasite. We have experimentally tested how variation in the time to transmission (early or late after infection) and exposure to adverse conditions outside the host (immediate or delayed contact with new host) interact to determine the success of the infection in the next host, using the trypanosome Crithidia bombi infecting its bumblebee host, Bombus terrestris. These two experimentally manageable steps mimic the processes of within- and among-host selection for the parasite. We found that early transmission led to higher infection success in the next host as did immediate contact with the new host. However, there was no interaction between the two parameters as would be expected if early-transmitted variants, resulting from rapid multiplication within the host, would be less adapted to the conditions encountered during the between-host transfer or infection of the next host. Furthermore, typing the genetic variability of the parasites with microsatellites showed that the four different transmission routes of our experiment selected for different degrees of allelic diversity of the infecting parasite populations. The results support the idea that variation in the transmission process selects for different genotypic variants of the parasite. At the same time, the relationship of allelic diversity with infection intensity suggested that the coinfection model of May and Nowak (1995) may be appropriate, where each parasite is able to infect and multiply independent of others within the same host.  相似文献

Plants can detect cues associated with the risk of future herbivory and modify defence phenotypes accordingly; however, our current understanding is limited both with respect to the range of early warning cues to which plants respond and the nature of the responses. Here we report that exposure to volatile emissions from plant tissues infested with herbivore eggs promotes stronger defence responses to subsequent herbivory in two Brassica species. Furthermore, exposure to these volatile cues elicited an apparent shift from growth to reproduction in Brassica nigra, with exposed plants exhibiting increased flower and seed production, but reduced leaf production, relative to unexposed controls. Our results thus document plant defence priming in response to a novel environmental cue, oviposition‐induced plant volatiles, while also showing that plant responses to early warning cues can include changes in both defence and life‐history traits.  相似文献
