The effects of tributyltin (TBT) compounds on gill morphology were examined in the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus , in 96-h LC50 and 6-week sublethal exposures. Morphometry was used for the identification and quantification of effects with the light microscope. A 96-h LC50 of 17.2 μg 1 1 was determined. Morphometric analysis of gill tissues revealed hypertrophy of the lamellar epithelium in fish exposed to 17.2 μg 1–1. Relative diffusing capacity was significantly decreased (−41 %); ( P <0.05, ANOVA, Bonferroni t -test). At 35.6 μg 1−1, TBT exposure resulted in a significant reduction (− 40%) in the volume of the lamellar blood channels. Both of these observations occurred in fish that showed signs of acute poisoning including loss of equilibrium. In fish exposed to sublethal concentrations of 0.105–2.000 μg TBT 1−1 for 6 weeks, there were no pathological changes in the gill. There were no treatment-related changes in the surface morphology of the gills of fish from both experiments upon scanning electron microscopic examination. Although gill pathology was observed in acutely toxic exposures, it does not appear to be a major mechanism of TBT toxicity.  相似文献

In an experiment to investigate genetic consequences of hatchery rearing in salmon, allozyme variation at five polymorphic loci was examined in Atlantic salmon of known initial genetic composition, which were reared throughout freshwater life in the hatchery or stocked into the wild as swim-up fry. The genetic composition of the juveniles in the hatchery remained homogeneous from fertilization up to stocking, and from stocking to 2+ in the wild, however, those remaining at the hatchery developed genetic differences among smolting and nonsmolting 1+ parr. These differences were attributed to conditions leading to early smolting at 1+ among the hatchery fish, with 1+ smolts diverging from the gene pool from which they were derived, whereas those stocked into the wild did not smolt until a year later and retained the original genetic composition. The results are discussed in relation to hatchery rearing of salmon and implications for the use of reared fish in stocking and enhancement programmes.  相似文献

The evolutionary importance of introgressive hybridization has long been recognized by plant evolutionists, and there is now a growing recognition for its potential role in animals as well. Detailed empirical investigations of this evolutionary process, however, are still lacking in many animal groups, particularly in the marine environment. Using integrated microsatellite DNA data (eight loci analysed over 803 individuals representing 17 sampling locations) and multivariate statistical procedures (principal component, factorial correspondence and admixture proportion analyses), we: (i) provide a detailed dissection of the dynamics of introgressive hybridization between Sebastes fasciatus and S. mentella, two economically important redfishes from the North-west Atlantic; and (ii) infer the factors potentially involved in the maintenance of the hybrid zone observed in the gulf of St. Lawrence and south of Newfoundland. This study provided one of the rare examples of extensive introgressive hybridization in the ocean, and highlighted the predominant role of this process in shaping the extent of genetic diversity, interspecific differences and population structuring among redfishes from the North-west Atlantic. The extensive (average rate of introgression = 15%) but geographically circumscribed and asymmetrical pattern of introgressive hybridization, the sympatric persistence of two reproductively isolated introgressed groups, the differential patterns of linkage disequilibrium among samples, and the maintenance of genetic integrity of both species outside the defined zone of introgression despite high potential for gene flow, all implicated selection in promoting and maintaining the observed pattern of introgression.  相似文献

The study was undertaken on three adjacent rivers in NW Ireland, on one of which an Atlantic salmon Salmo salar freshwater juvenile rearing unit is situated. Two markers which distinguished farm and wild populations were used. An Ava II-B RFLP in the ND1 region of mtDNA was at a frequency of 0.58 in the farm strain but absent in the wild populations. Allele E at minisatellite locus Ssa- A45/2/l was at a frequency of 0.91 in farm samples, but at a maximum of 0.41 in the populations in the two rivers adjacent to the one with the juvenile rearing unit. The farm strain showed a significant reduction in mean heterozygosity (0.281 ± 0.057), over three minisatellite loci examined, compared to wild samples (0.532 ± 0.063). The occurrence of farm genotypes and the independent occurrence of mtDNA and minisatellite markers in several parr samples from the river indicated that escaped juvenile salmon completed their life cycle, bred and interbred with native fish, upon their return to the river. Escaped fish homed accurately, as adults, to the site of escape, i.e. the area adjacent to the hatchery outflow in the upstream part of the river. Breeding of males in the lower part of the river was also indicated but this could have been due to mature male parr which had moved downstream. The return of adults of farm origin to the river to breed was indicated by the presence of the Ava II-B haplotype in adults netted in the estuary.  相似文献

Small populations may be expected to harbour less genetic variation than large populations, but the relation between census size (N), effective population size (N e), and genetic diversity is not well understood. We compared microsatellite variation in four small peripheral Atlantic salmon populations from the Iberian peninsula and three larger populations from Scotland to test whether genetic diversity was related to population size. We also examined the historical decline of one Iberian population over a 50-year period using archival scales in order to test whether a marked reduction in abundance was accompanied by a decrease in genetic diversity. Estimates of effective population size (N e) calculated by three temporal methods were consistently low in Iberian populations, ranging from 12 to 31 individuals per generation considering migration, and from 38 to 175 individuals per generation if they were regarded as closed populations. Corresponding N e/N ratios varied from 0.02 to 0.04 assuming migration (mean=0.03) and from 0.04 to 0.18 (mean=0.10) assuming closed populations. Population bottlenecks, inferred from the excess of heterozygosity in relation to allelic diversity, were detected in all four Iberian populations, particularly in those year classes derived from a smaller number of returning adults. However, despite their small size and declining status, Iberian populations continue to display relatively high levels of heterozygosity and allelic richness, similar to those found in larger Scottish populations. Furthermore, in the R. Asón no evidence was found for a historical loss of genetic diversity despite a marked decline in abundance during the last five decades. Thus, our results point to two familiar paradigms in salmonid conservation: (1)␣endangered populations can maintain relatively high levels of genetic variation despite their small size, and (2) marked population declines may not necessarily result in a significant loss of genetic diversity. Although there are several explanations for such results, microsatellite data and physical tagging suggest that high levels of dispersal and asymmetric gene flow have probably helped to maintain genetic diversity in these peripheral populations, and thus to avoid the negative consequences of inbreeding.  相似文献

The survival of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the Baltic Sea was examined in relation to smolt traits (length and origin) and annual environmental factors [sea surface temperature (SST) and seasonal North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index], and prey fish abundance (herring Clupea harengus and sprat Sprattus sprattus) in the main basin and the southern Gulf of Bothnia. The study was based on recapture data for Carlin‐tagged hatchery‐reared and wild smolts from the Simojoki, a river flowing into the northern Gulf of Bothnia. The survival of the wild and reared groups was analysed using an ANOVA model and a stepwise regression model, with the arcsin‐transformed proportion of recaptured fish as the response variable. The results demonstrated a combined influence of smolt traits and environmental factors on survival. For the reared Atlantic salmon released in 1986–1998 (28 groups), the increasing annual mean SST in July in the southern Gulf of Bothnia and increasing mean smolt size improved survival. If the SST in July was excluded from the model, the NAO index in May to July also had a positive effect on survival (P < 0·10). The log10‐transformed abundance of 0+ year herring in the southern Gulf of Bothnia entered the model (P < 0·15) if the SST and NAO index were excluded. For the wild Atlantic salmon released in 1972–1993 (21 groups), only the increasing SST in July showed a significant association with improved survival (P = 0·004). Prey fish abundance in the main basin of the Baltic Sea had no influence on the survival of reared or wild smolt groups. The interaction between smolt size and the SST in July was not significant. The origin was a better, but not a significant, predictor of marine survival compared to the smolt size or the SST in July. The mean recapture rate of the wild groups was twice that of the reared groups in the whole data. The results suggest that cold summers in the Gulf of Bothnia reduce the survival of young Atlantic salmon in both wild and reared groups. The larger smolt size of the reared groups compared with the wild groups to some extent compensated for their lower ability to live in the wild.  相似文献
