Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of the guppy to various salt concentrations. The guppy, Poecilia reticulata , (total length 11–40 mm) were subjected to abrupt and gradual changes from fresh water (salinity=0.1%) to various salinities (%). No mortality occurred when the fish were transferred from fresh water to 50% sea water (19.5%). Through gradual adaptation from 50% sea water to 80% of the fish were able to tolerate 100% (39%) sea water for 7 days. After a 7 day stay in sea water, fish were readapted to fresh water during a 3 h period. Through gradual adaptation fish were also able to tolerate salinities ranging from 39.0% (100% sea water) to 58.5%. After a 30 day stay in 150% sea water (58.5%), fish were readapted to fresh water over a 5 h period. The results indicate that they were well able to tolerate the abrupt change from 100 or 150% sea water to fresh water. Females that stayed in 150% sea water (58.5%) for 30 days had embryos in their gonads.  相似文献

Salinity tolerance of young catfish, Clarias lazera (Burchell)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of young catfish, Claria lazera , to various saline concentrations. Young catfish, total length 52–88 mm, were subjected to abrupt and gradual changes from fresh water (salinity = 0.14‰) to various salinities. Ninetyfour per cent survival occurred when the fish were transferred from fresh water to 25% sea water (salinity = 9.5‰ No fish survived higher salinities even through gradual change.  相似文献

Synopsis Blood samples from cannulated young adult (2.5–15 kg) white sturgeon, acclimated to San Francisco Bay water (24 ppt) had plasma values of 248.8 ± 13.5 mOsm kg−1 H2O, [Na+] = 125 ± 8.0 mEq 1−1, [K+] = 2.6 ± 0.8 mEq 1−1 and [CL] = 122 ± 3.0 mEq 1−1. Freshwater acclimated sturgeon had an osmolality of 236 ± 7, [Na+] = 131.6 + 4.4, [K+] = 2.5 ± 0.7 and [CL] = 110.6 ± 3.6. Freshwater acclimated fish gradually exposed to sea water (increase of 5 ppt h−1) had higher plasma osmolalities than did the bay water acclimated fish. These young adult sturgeon are able to tolerate transfer from fresh water to sea water as well as gradual transfer from sea water to fresh water. Plasma electrolytes in transferred fish are regulated, but tend to differ from long term acclimated fish at the same salinities. There is a gradual increase in the upper salinity tolerance (abrupt transfer) of juvenile white sturgeon with weight: 5–10 ppt for 0.4–0.9 g fish, 10–15 ppt for 0.7–1.8 g fish, and 15 ppt for 4.9–50.0 g fish. The ability of juveniles to regulate plasma osmolality is limited. The young adult fish are able to tolerate higher salinities (35 ppt) than juvenile sturgeon but probably are also characterized by low activity of the necessary ion exchange mechanisms in the gills which permit rapid adjustment of blood electrolytes with graduate change in external salinity.  相似文献

Body water content was determined on groups of Cyprinodon variegatus after sequential acclimation to ambient salinities in the range from fresh water to 100%. A multiple linear regression model applied to the data included body mass ( M ) of individuals and acclimation salinity ( S ) as independent variables, and body water content ( W ) as the dependent variable. The model that described the relationship was W (g) = 0·059 + 0·723 M (g)–0001 S (%). Converting values of body water content to percent of wet body mass produced a range of values from 74·5% in fresh water to 72·0% at 100%, only a 2·5% difference in body water content over this wide range of ambient salinities.  相似文献

Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus , less than 150 mm in size were frequently captured at sea in northern Labrador in areas where salinities of 30‰ or higher had been recorded. These captures were inconsistent with many earlier reports for other areas that indicated Arctic charr less than 150 mm in size were not found at sea. A series of salinity challenge tests was carried out in the field, using wild Ikarut River charr, and in the laboratory, using cultured Fraser River charr, to understand more about the potential fate of these small fish. The results of challenge tests with small Arctic charr (< 120 mm) indicated that at intermediate salinities (10–20‰), these fish can readily survive. In laboratory tests with salinities at 30‰, survival was size dependent and would suggest that in natural situations, small charr would require periodic access to fresh or brackish water to stay alive. The influence of water temperature on salinity tolerance may be important when fish are exposed to temperatures that are below 0° C.  相似文献

Whole animal oxygen consumption rates and plasma constituents were determined in the tilapia O. mossambicus , acclimated for 1 month in fresh water, sea water, and 1·6 × sea water. Oxygen consumption rates for the three water salinities were: 177·2 ± 16·86, 78·6 ± 2·32, and 195·4 ± 15·39 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 (means ± 1 s.e.), respectively. Plasma prolactin (tPRL188) concentration was significantly lower in 1·6 × sea water compared to fresh and sea water. There were no significant differences among mean plasma cortisol concentration and lysozyme activity. Ventilation was significantly higher in fish in sea water compared to the fish in fresh and 1·6 × sea water. The lowest oxygen consumption rates were found in fish acclimated to sea water. That salinity is probably closest to the brackish waters from which they were captured in the wild, and this agreement likely reflects the selection for optimal morphological and physiological characteristics to live in that environment.  相似文献

Juvenile freshwater and anadromous inconnu Stenodus leucichthys regulated plasma ions following a direct transfer from fresh to brackish water (10–15‰), but suffered osmoregulatory collapse with 100% mortality in 48 h when directly transferred to 25‰ salinity. Acclimation to brackish water for 2 weeks improved hypo-osmoregulatory capacity in both populations, with acclimated fish showing smaller increases in blood plasma ion concentrations, higher Na+-K+ ATPase activity, and lower mortality than non-acclimated fish following transfer to 25‰ sea water. Anadromous inconnu maintained pre-treatment plasma ion levels during acclimation, whereas these levels increased during acclimation in freshwater inconnu. Juvenile anadromous inconnu are therefore able to adapt physiologically to sea water of at least 25‰, if brackish-water acclimation is available, but freshwater inconnu have diminished saltwater tolerance, relative to the anadromous form.  相似文献

Effects of salinity on the ionic balance and growth of juvenile turbot   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The effects of salinity changes (27, 19 and 10‰) on seawater-adapted juvenile turbot were studied on their plasma osmolarity and ion concentrations, on oxygen consumption, on gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity after 3 months and on growth parameters. All plasma concentrations (except chloride) were unchanged, suggesting that fish were well adapted to their environment. Oxygen consumption was significantly decreased in the 19 and 10‰ groups, where fish weighed significantly more 105 days after transfer than fish maintained in sea water. These results, and the fact that apparent food conversion rates were lower in a diluted environment, suggest that on a long term schedule growth conditions could be improved by adaptation to brackish waters (salinities between 10 and 19‰). The effects of transfer from sea water to 27, 19, 10 and 5‰ were also followed during the first 3 weeks. With salinity 10‰ a steady state was reached on day 21 with all plasma values within the same range. The significant differences observed in osmolarity, plasma ion concentrations and Na+,K+-ATPase activity 3 weeks after transfer of juveniles to 5‰ salinity, compared with transfers in higher salinities, suggest that there is a threshold of acclimation of turbot to a hypotonic environment.  相似文献

Newly hatched larvae of the California killifish ( Fundulus parvipinnis ) reared in the laboratory, were tolerant of salinities from fresh water to 70‰. Their salinity tolerance was influenced by incubation salinity; larvae hatched in lower incubation salinities exhibited greater freshwater tolerance than those hatched in higher salinities. In gradual acclimation tests, the upper median lethal salinity for the larvae was 130‰. Freshwater tolerance of the larvae decreased with age; yolk sac larvae were completely tolerant of fresh water while larvae more than 15 days old were least resistant.  相似文献

Ontogenesis of osmotic regulation in the striped mullet, Mugil cephalus L.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The osmoregulatory capabilities of juvenile striped mullet, Mugil cephalus L ., of three size-groups (20–29, 30–39 and 40–9 mm s.l.) were compared in a series of six salinities ranging from fresh water to full sea water. The two smaller size-groups were able to tolerate instantaneous transfer from the brackish water in which captured, to all salinities but fresh water, while the 40–69 mm group were tolerant of instantaneous transfer to all experimental salinities. At high environmental salinities, the osmotic regulatory capabilities improved with growth in size to an apparently definitive condition in fish of 40–69 mm s.l. The smallest of these individuals were estimated to be about 7.5 months old. The osmotic regulatory capability in waters of low salinity had reached a definitive state with the development of tolerance to such salinities. The ontogenetic pattern for Mugil cephalus is virtually identical to that of the Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar .  相似文献

The osmoregulatory capabilities of 6-month-old juvenile obscure puffer Takifugu obscurus, transferred directly from fresh water to different salinities (0‰, freshwater control; 10‰; 20‰ and 30‰), were studied over an 8-day period. After transfer, plasma osmolality of the fish at 30‰ was significantly higher than those at all other salinities throughout the experiment. The Na+/K+ ATPase activity in the gills of the fish treated with various salinities increased significantly, peaking at 48 h, then decreased gradually to the control level at 192 h. Similar fluctuation trends of the Na+/K+ ATPase activity were observed in the kidneys. Modified Gaussian model provided accurate fits for the time-course changes in the Na+/K+ ATPase activities after abrupt salinity challenge. The results demonstrated that obscure puffer has strong capacity to tolerate abrupt salinity changes and can osmoregulate well over a wide range of salinities even in juvenile stage.  相似文献

The growth of 1-year-old Arctic cisco ( Coregonus autumnalis ) was monitored under laboratory conditions for fish acclimated to one of two temperatures (5 and 10° C) and one of five salinities (6, 12, 18,24, 30‰). Fish were maintained for 43 days at rations of 3% wet body weight per day at 5° C and 5% wet body weight per day at 10° C, with rations adjusted for weight gain every 7–12 days. Fish increased 9–11% in length and 55–71% in weight at 5° C, and 23–27% in length and 141–161% in weight at 10° C. Length and weight increased linearly over 43 days. There was a statistically significant effect of temperature on growth but no statistically significant effect of salinity. Higher growth rates at 10° C were partially attributable to significantly greater gross conversion efficiency at the higher temperature. Over the course of the experiment, the condition (weight per unit length) of all fish increased by 3·2 to 63·6% at 5° C and by 5·6 to 46·0% at 10° C. There was no discernible effect of salinity on condition at either temperature. These results demonstrate that, with salinity acclimation and high food ration, 1-year-old Arctic cisco can grow at equivalent rates across salinities ranging from 6 to 30‰. The ecological implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

Influence of salinity on early development in the spined loach   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Spined loach Cobitis taenia developed successfully between 0·12 and 4·80‰ salinity. At 6·00‰, net production was strongly reduced, and development failed at or above 7·20‰. Below 0·12‰ S, net production became variable, indicating restrictive effects. In comparison with other primary freshwater fish species C. taenia has a low sensitivity to salinity. The upper limit for early development was equal to the highest salinity under which C. taenia adults are found along the Baltic coast. Therefore, salinity should not limit early development within the brackish habitats of spined loach.  相似文献

Stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes were employed to elucidate energy flows and trophic interactions in Lake Apopka, a hypereutrophic lake in central Florida, U.S.A. Isotope compositions of lake biota ranged from −27·1 to −3·0‰ for δ13C, and from 3·7 to 13·9‰ for δ15N. The food web was based primarily on plankton production with diatoms, Microcystis and zooplankton dominating the diet of fish. Carbon isotope evidence showed that pico- and nano-phytoplankton were not a direct carbon source for fish, but were important to zooplankton. δ15N mass balance estimates indicated that planktivorous fish obtained 48–85% of their diets from zooplankton. The ∼3‰ range of δ15N in gizzard shad reflected increasing dependence on zooplankton as fish grew whereas the positive relationship between total length and δ15N of largemouth bass reflected increasing predation on larger planktivorous fish with growth. The broad ranges of δ13C (−25·9 to −9·5‰) and δ15N (5·8 to 14·4‰) of blue tilapia were indicators of diet diversity. Two presumed omnivores (brown bullhead and white catfish) and piscivores (black crappie, largemouth bass and Florida gar) were found to depend on planktivorous fish. However, stable isotope data revealed no trophic links between blue tilapia, an abundant fish in the near-shore area, and piscivores.  相似文献

Routine metabolism of the euryhaline cyprinodontid Cyprinodon variegatus Lacepede was measured at a series of ambient salinities ranging from fresh water through 100‰. Fish used had been sequentially acclimated to the test salinities (ambient temperature of 20±1° C and a 12: 12 L: D schedule).
Routine metabolic rates were highest at ambient salinities from 15 to 50‰. Metabolism was somewhat lower at ambient salinities less than 15‰, and showed a sequential decline at ambient salinities greater than 50‰. It is suggested that routine metabolism is depressed at elevated salinities by reduced O, transfer, a consequence of maintenance of hydromineral balance in hypersaline waters.  相似文献

The survival of Atlantic salmon smolts on exposure to constant concentrations of cyanide and ammonia, singly and together, has been measured under laboratory conditions at a concentration of 5 mgl-1 of carbon dioxide. The 24-h LC50 values of cyanide and of un-ionised ammonia, in fresh water, were 0·073 mg HCN l-1 and 0·20 mg NH3l-1 respectively at a concentration of dissolved oxygen of 10 mg l-1, and 0·024 mg HCN l-1 and 0·08 mgNH3l-1 respectively at a concentration of dissolved oxygen of 3·5 mg l-1. In 30% sea water the corresponding values were similar for cyanide but markedly higher for ammonioa. In 80% sea water the values were intermediate between those of fresh water and 30% sea water. Prior acclimation of the fish to the respective toxicant increased the resistance of the fish only slightly to cyanide, but with ammonia the 24-h LC50 was increased between 1·4 and 2-fold after acclimation for 1–3 days to between 0·2 and 0·5 of the 24-h LC50 value. Mixtures of cyanide and ammonia were between 0·6 and 1·25 times as toxic as expected, assuming simple additivity of toxicity.  相似文献

Gilthead seabream Sparus aurata and European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax , are two important species in Mediterranean aquaculture. In the wild, their juveniles occur in brackish areas such as lagoons and river deltas. Even though the juveniles seem to favour brackish environments, low salinity incurs an energy cost for osmoregulation. This paper presents the results of a series of laboratory experiments exploring the effects of salinity on growth, feeding, food conversion, survival and maintenance energy requirements of wild‐caught juveniles. The fish were kept in the laboratory, divided in groups of 20 in small tanks of 50 l each, and supplied with biologically filtered seawater of four salinity levels (8, 18, 28‰ and natural seawater) and fixed temperature (20 ± 1·4° C). The fish were fed pelleted feed throughout the experiment. Both species showed great similarity in their responses to lower salinities. Satiation time for both species increased with decreasing salinity, while maintenance requirements (required daily ration and energy) increased as with increasing salinity. Growth and feed conversion is highest for salinities around 28‰ and lower for salinities above and below. Both species share common physiological features, and intermediate salinities are optimal for their performance in nature and in captivity.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were infected with sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis (0·08 ± 0·007 sea lice g−1) over a period of 4 h. Both infected and non‐infected fish were swim tested in sea water (SW) and fresh water (FW). The ventral aorta of each fish was fitted with a Doppler cuff in order to measure cardiac output, stroke volume and heart rate during swim testing. Blood samples were taken at rest and after exercise. Critical swimming speed of infected fish in SW (2·14 ± 0·08 body lengths, bl s−1) was significantly lower ( P  < 0·05) than infected fish switched to FW (2·81 ± 0·08 bl s−1) and non‐infected fish in SW (2·42 ± 0·04 bl s−1) and FW (2·61 ± 0·08 bl s−1). Cardiac and blood results indicated infected fish exposed to FW did experience stress, but relief from osmotic and ionic distress probably reduces energy expenditure, allowing the increase in performance. As the performance of sea lice‐infected fish improved upon transfer to FW, it is likely that heavily infected salmonids do return to FW to restore compromised osmotic and ionic balance, and remove sea lice in the process.  相似文献

In brackish water the variety of marine and freshwater parasite species is considerably reduced. The distribution in brackish water of most marine endoparasites is restricted by the salinity tolerance of their hosts, most of the parasite species are more tolerant than their hosts. The influence of salinity and temperature on nine species has been examined; first stage larvae of Contracaecum aduncum develop in 0-32‰ salinity; Cryptocotyle lingua proved to be infective at salinities down to 4‰. The greatest resistance was found in Anisakis larvae from herring Clupea harengus , which survived for more than half a year. Parasites in the fish intestines appear to be unaffected by changing water salinities, as the osmolarity in the intestines stays nearly constant. Marine ectoparasites ( Acanthochondria depressa, Lepeophtheirus pectoralis ) survive about three times longer than freshwater species ( Piscicola geometra, Argulus foliaceus ) when salinity is 16‰. High temperature increases the effects of adverse salinities on parasites. There is evidence that none of these ecto-parasitic species can develop within the range of 7-20‰ salinity.  相似文献

Salinity tolerances and plasma osmotic concentrations were determined in the fat sleeper, Dormitator maculatus , a common species in estuarine and coastal fresh waters along the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts of North, Central and South America. Analyses followed sequential laboratory acclimations to a series of ambient salinities at a constant temperature of 20 ± 1° C and photoperiod of 12L: 12D. These fish tolerated a range of ambient salinities from fresh water through a salinity of 75‰. Plasma osmotic concentrations were regulated at an essentially constant level in the salinity range from fresh water through a salinity of 50‰, beyond which plasma concentrations trended upward with increased ambient salinity. We conclude that D. maculatus , while truly euryhaline, docs not show the extreme euryhalme capabilities of several teleost fishes that are 'full-time' estuarine inhabitants.  相似文献
