Weathering cracks have been demonstrated to be equivalent to split-lines in compact bone. The amount of cracking becomes more extensive with time. Advanced weathering cracks have the potential for giving more complete information on orientation patterns than split-lines. They can also be superior in accuracy and objectivity of results obtained, in preserving the original condition of the bone, and in elimination of much of the work involved in making split-line preparations.  相似文献

Ways of determining orientation patterns in compact bone are needed for specimens which are not available for split-line analysis. Weathering cracks have been shown to be essentially identical in orientation to split-lines, but they are more often than not absent or very few in number. Two other features of compact bone which promise to extend the range of orientational analysis are illustrated and described. These are (1) red or brown lines near the surface, and (2) numerous light-colored filaments, at or near the surface, laid parallel to each other. The latter manifestation has been observed more frequently and usually gives a more complete picture of orientational patterns. Specimens showing the two indicators were decalcified and processed for split-line patterns, which were essentially identical to the indicators in orientation. The first type of indicator is shown microscopically to be a manifestation of resorption spaces and immature osteons containing coagulated blood. The second represents oriented mature osteons in monkey pelves, but the microscopic basis in a cat pelvic bone is not clear.  相似文献

There is still disagreement concerning the functional significance of split-line patterns in bone. This study was undertaken to reexamine the mechanical forces hypothesis for split-line formation by comparing split-line patterns with in vivo mandibular bone strain patterns. The relationship between split-line orientation and in vivo stress and strain patterns on macaque and galago mandibles was examined during jaw opening and the power stroke of mastication and incision. An attempt was made to relate split-line orientation to the direction of tensile stress and strain along the primate mandible. In addition, we also investigated the alternative possibility that split-line orientation is related to the direction of low stresses (and strains) on the primate mandible. The results of this study showed that there was no consistent relationship between split-line orientation and the principal strains or stresses. Thus, split-lines did not run consistently in the direction of high or low stress and strain. Therefore, we have concluded that split-line orientation provides little useful information for inferring patterns of stress and strain in bone.  相似文献

Collagen fibrils of articular cartilage have specific depth-dependent orientations and the fibrils bend in the cartilage surface to exhibit split-lines. Fibrillation of superficial collagen takes place in osteoarthritis. We aimed to investigate the effect of superficial collagen fibril patterns and collagen fibrillation of cartilage on stresses and strains within a knee joint. A 3D finite element model of a knee joint with cartilage and menisci was constructed based on magnetic resonance imaging. The fibril-reinforced poroviscoelastic material properties with depth-dependent collagen orientations and split-line patterns were included in the model. The effects of joint loading on stresses and strains in cartilage with various split-line patterns and medial collagen fibrillation were simulated under axial impact loading of 1000 N. In the model, the collagen fibrils resisted strains along the split-line directions. This increased also stresses along the split-lines. On the contrary, contact and pore pressures were not affected by split-line patterns. Simulated medial osteoarthritis increased tissue strains in both medial and lateral femoral condyles, and contact and pore pressures in the lateral femoral condyle. This study highlights the importance of the collagen fibril organization, especially that indicated by split-line patterns, for the weight-bearing properties of articular cartilage. Osteoarthritic changes of cartilage in the medial femoral condyle created a possible failure point in the lateral femoral condyle. This study provides further evidence on the importance of the collagen fibril organization for the optimal function of articular cartilage.  相似文献

This investigation was undertaken to study the relation of split-lines to the microscopic structure of cortical bone by means of microradiography and conventional histologic staining techniques. The results indicate that the feature of bone structure that determines the production and orientation of split-lines is the disposition of collagenous fibers, whether the bone organization is Haversian (osteone-containing) or not. Differences of opinion in the literature concerning the “causation” of split-lines appear to stem from a failure to distinguish between the morphologic and functional aspects of the problem.  相似文献

Split-line patterns are reported in skulls of five adult male baboons. While variations in pattern occur in all parts of the skull, these variations are relatively minor in the following regions: supraorbital, lateral orbital, medial orbital, nasal bones, zygomatico-alveolar crest, nasal opening, alveolar process of maxilla and mandible. Wide differences in pattern occur in these regions: infraorbital, zygomatic bone, body of maxilla, and frontal bone posterior to the supraorbital area. The major variability in split-line orientation indicates that oversimplified interpretations of the patterns in terms of (1) conformity to gross structure, or (2) direction of bone growth, are untenable. The variations do not contradict a functional interpretation in which mechanical forces and skull form interact to different degrees in different individuals, however. Skulls of a variety of primates are useful for functional analysis, because they have similar structural plans, but the differences are well outside the normal range of variation for a single species.  相似文献

Close inspection of surface bone in skulls of Neanderthal man reveals weathering cracks extensive enough in one specimen, La Chapelle-aux-Saints, to allow preliminary analysis of major patterns of orientation and to make inferences about functional relationships of structures. The fine structure of the bone of the brow ridges is very different from the rest of the skull in the two adults examined, having a peculiar vermiculate surface pattern. Weathering cracks do not appear in this region. This indicates that Neanderthal brow ridges are not closely related to normal mechanical forces such as chewing exertion. It may, however, give further support to theories of Neanderthal brow ridges as protection for the eyes. The localized structure of bone often differs from region to region, and offers new possibilities for the analysis of both contemporary and fossil forms.  相似文献

The effect of mineral volume fraction on the tensile mechanical properties of cortical bone tissue is investigated by theoretical and experimental means. The mineral content of plexiform, bovine bone was lowered by 18% and 29% by immersion in fluoride solutions for 3 days and 12 days, respectively. The elastic modulus, yield strength and ultimate strength of bone tissue decreased, while the ultimate strain increased with a decrease in mineral content. The mechanical behavior of bone tissue was modeled by using a micromechanical shear lag theory consisting of overlapped mineral platelets reinforcing the organic matrix. The decrease in yield stress, by the 0.002 offset method, of the fluoride treated bones were matched in the theoretical curves by lowering the shear yield stress of the organic matrix. The failure criterion used was based on failure stresses determined from a failure envelope (Mohr's circle), which was constructed using experimental data. It was found that the model predictions of elastic modulus got worse with a decrease in mineral content (being 7.9%, 17.2% and 33.0% higher for the control, 3-day and 12-day fluoride-treated bones). As a result, the developed theory could not fully predict the yield strain of bones with lowered mineral content, being 12.9% and 21.7% lower than the experimental values. The predicted ultimate stresses of the bone tissues with lower mineral contents were within +/- 10% of the experimental values while the ultimate strains were 12.7% and 26.3% lower than the experimental values. Although the model developed in this study did not take into account the presence of hierarchical structures, voids, orientation of collagen molecules and micro cracks, it still indicated that the mechanical properties of the organic matrix depend on bone mineral content.  相似文献

本文对马鞍山遗址 (1990年度) 出土的一千余件碎骨,借鉴中外学者的研究方法,就其表面痕迹作了尝试性的分析。结果发现,尽管痕迹特征标示出有风化、腐蚀、重力等自然营力的作用,以及动物啃咬等后期侵扰,但主要的特征——破碎状况尤其是管状骨骼的破碎程度和人工痕迹的特征——显示出,这些碎骨的产生主要是由于遗址占有者的活动——敲骨吸髓和制作骨制品造成的。由此,进而对遗址占有者的某些行为和遗址形成过程作了探讨。通过碎骨表面痕迹的分析,为该遗址的进一步综合研究提供了有助的资料和证据。  相似文献

The external surface of the Saldanha cranium shows extensive exfoliation and cracking. In a few places remnants of the probable original bone surfaces can be observed. These are orange-brown in color, contrasting with the nearly white color of exposed deeper layers, and are subdivided into small segments with pits in their centers. Causes of the color differences are uncertain but merit investigation. The surface cracking and exfoliation probably result from weathering before fossilization. This conclusion is based on the observation that the endocranial surfaces show no such effects, despite the scattering of the cranial fragments at the time of discovery. A depressed fracture in the frontal bone indicates a heavy blow at or shortly after the time of death. This blow probably created some of the fragments, but there are also incomplete fracture cracks which may have resulted from the blow. Unresolved taphonomic problems include the manner in which the cranium held together after decay of soft tissues allowed weathering, and the manner in which the fragments were subsequently scattered. Chips from the cranial vault indicate that the outer table was very thick, tending to support recent proposals that the specimen and assoicated fauna and tools are from a considerably earlier time period than originally believed. The surface damage to the brow ridges gives information on the structure of deeper layers. These are lacking orientation, supporting the hypothesis that hominid brow ridges are not primarily a response to masticatory forces, but may afford protection for the eyes.  相似文献

Until date, many devices have been developed for cutting human bones during orthopedic surgeries. However, bones are anisotropic material, and their machining characteristics depend on the tool feed direction. In this study, microcutting of the bovine cortical bone is performed and its structure observed under a microscope. Furthermore, the formation of cutting chips and measurement of the cutting force during bone machining are dynamically observed while considering the anisotropy of bone tissue. In particular, the fracture of secondary osteons and crack propagation in bones are observed and analyzed. The results indicate that when the cut depth exceeds 20 μm and is greater than the interval of concentric lamellae, cracks are formed together with chips. A new method for bone machining is proposed. This method is based on the characteristics of crack propagation in bones and is expected to produce low mechanical stress and realize highly efficient and precise machining of living tissues such as bones.  相似文献

Projection microradiography was used to determine the density and orientation of the force transmitting structures, i.e., trabeculae and bone lying between approximately parallel vascular canals, within the bones of cat skulls. The organisation in the skulls was confirmed statistically for a total of ten cats. The results of the observations showed that within specific areas of the skull a high degree of structural orientation and an increased density of osseous structures was present. The distribution of these characters corresponded in contiguous bones such that a continuum of structural organisation was established between the alveolar region and the site of attachment of the temporalis and masseter muscles and the glenoid region. The patterns of force transmission during jaw closure were determined when a resistance was placed initially between the canines and then the carnassials. An analysis was first carried out on dry skulls using colophonium resin to determine the direction of the force distribution. The nature and the approximate magnitude of the forces were ascertained by replacing the resin with strain gauges. The basic similarities in the strain patterns recorded from the dry skulls and those from the ten anaesthetised cats in which strain gauges had been intra-vitally implanted, substantiated the recordings made on the dry skulls. Combination of the results from the three sets of experiments defined the patterns of force distribution in the cat skull during the closure of the mandible against a resistance. The results showed that: (1) the combined action of the temporalis and masseter muscles tended to reduce the overall strain in the skull bones, and that the deformations produced by the action of the masseter were greater than that exerted by the temporalis muscles; (2) during biting, whether the resistance was placed between the canines or carnassials, compressive forces predominated in the facial bones; (3) small movements observed between facial bones indicated the presence of a flexible component within the skull, thus allowing large forces to be exerted during biting without overstressing the facial bones; (4) the glenoid fossa is part of a force bearing joint; (5) forces generated during biting were resisted within the skull by forces of an opposite nature generated within the system, the incompressible nature of bone and by the effect of the soft tissues; (6) the nature and the magnitude of the strain altered when a resistance was placed at the canines and then at the carnassials; however, the pattern of force distribution within the skull remained the same; (7) there was a direct correspondence between the detailed structural organisation of the bones and the patterns of force distribution. This conclusion would appear to apply in general to mammalian skulls. The study also emphasises the importance, neglected hitherto, of carrying out a variety of experiments to determine the patterns of force distribution in bones. The Trajectorial Theory of bone organisation is discussed and, on the basis of the results obtained, a modified theory is proposed. This states that: the structural continuum is common to the compact and cancellous bone and comprises bony bars which are aligned in the optimum direction for the transmission of force to a region in the bone or bones where it is effectively resisted.  相似文献

Architectural changes of the mandibular ramus following masseterectomy were analyzed by means of the split-line technique in both adult and growing monkeys. The right masseter muscle was resected in ten tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) and they were sacrificed following a 12-month period. Along with modifications in the shape of the mandible, the masseterectomy induced structural changes as revealed by alterations in the split-line patterns. These changes were much more evident in the adult animals. In growing monkeys, intrinsic forces determine an architecture of mandibular growth, represented by the direction of the splits. This is not influenced by the lack of mechanical factors like muscle action. Conversely, the final fibrous architecture of the bone in the adult monkey may be modified by extrinsic mechanical factors.  相似文献

The natural removal of 89 ungulate carcasses by predators and scavengers was monitored in various wildlife reserves and ranching areas of South Africa. Carnivores responsible for the bone remains were determined. Spotted hyaenas and, to a lesser extent, Brown hyaenas, were the only carnivores that regularly chewed bones. When hyaenas were absent, months of weathering were required before the smaller bones became disarticulated and able to be removed by vultures. The bone-collecting behaviour and related aspects of breeding of two species of griffon vulture were studied at five different nesting colonies in southern Africa—one Cape vulture colony and one White-backed vulture colony in or near wildlife reserves, as well as two Cape vulture colonies and one White-backed vulture colony in ranching land. A total of 2825 bones was found in or below the vulture nests. These bones were categorized and measured. Hyaena-produced bone fragments were found only in the colonies in the wild areas—none of the 387 chicks examined here had osteodystrophy (metabolic bone disease). By contrast, in the ranching areas, vultures collected larger and less fragmented bones. Many Cape vulture chicks had osteodystrophy (130 of 1917 examined), as did two White-backed vulture chicks (of 196 examined). In 1977, artificial feeding stations, 'restaurants' where carcass skeletons were crushed, were established for Cape vultures. Since then, the incidence of osteodystrophy has declined from 17% to 2–5% in 1983. It is clear that bone fragments are an essential dietary requirement, providing calcium for correct skeletal growth of griffon vulture chicks.  相似文献

X-ray micro-diffraction investigations of synthetic calcium phosphates of different composition and of bones show, that there can be relatively large variations in the chemical composition without changes in the interplanar spacings. The fact that the orientation of the mineral salts is the same in newly formed and old bone as well as in hyperparathyroidism, indicates that the ultrastructure of bone remains relatively unchanged in different physiological and pathological conditions.  相似文献

陕西蓝田锡水洞中产出许多中更新世哺乳类化石,这些标本残破者较多。对880件标本作埋藏学分析后发现:其中只有376件较完好,可供分类鉴定;根据身体大小,这些可鉴定的标本可分为较大、中等及较小3类,大个体动物的骨骼保存越破碎;98%的骨骼的风化级别为0—2,只有2%的风化较强,达3—5级;属草食动物的骨骼占97.6%,而食肉类的仅占1.7%;以青羊为例,死亡年龄以中青年为主,为灾变死亡;头骨残破,肢骨近端破碎严重,而远端肢梢几乎完好。种种迹象表明,与古人类活动有关。当时居住在锡水洞中的古人类以草食动物为主要猎取对象,敲骨吸髓,还可用骨作器。  相似文献

Bone microstructure reflects physiological characteristics and has been shown to contain phylogenetic and ecological signals. Although mammalian long bone histology is receiving increasing attention, systematic examination of the main clades has not yet been performed. Here we describe the long bone microstructure of Xenarthra based on thin sections representing twenty-two species. Additionally, patterns in bone compactness of humeri and femora are investigated. The primary bone tissue of xenarthran long bones is composed of a mixture of woven, parallel-fibered and lamellar bone. The vascular canals have a longitudinal, reticular or radial orientation and are mostly arranged in an irregular manner. Concentric rows of vascular canals and laminar organization of the tissue are only found in anteater bones. The long bones of adult specimens are marked by dense Haversian bone, a feature that has been noted for most groups of mammals. In the long bones of armadillos, secondary osteons have an oblique orientation within the three-dimensional bone tissue, thus resulting in their irregular shape when the bones are sectioned transversely. Secondary remodeling is generally more extensive in large taxa than in small taxa, and this could be caused by increased loading. Lines of arrested growth are assumed to be present in all specimens, but they are restricted to the outermost layer in bones of armadillos and are often masked by secondary remodeling in large taxa. Parameters of bone compactness show a pattern in the femur that separates Cingulata and Pilosa (Folivora and Vermilingua), with cingulates having a lower compactness than pilosans. In addition, cingulates show an allometric relationship between humeral and femoral bone compactness.  相似文献

The current study deduced the growth pattern and lifestyle habits of Chersina angulata based on bone histology and cross-sectional geometry of limb bones. Femora, humeri, and tibiae of seven different-sized individuals representing different ontogenetic stages were assessed to determine the interelement and intraskeletal histological variation within and among the tortoises. The bone histology of adult propodials consists of a highly vascularized, uninterrupted fibrolamellar bone tissue with a woven texture in the perimedullary and midcortical regions suggesting overall fast early growth. However, later in ontogeny, growth was slow and even ceased periodically as suggested by slowly formed parallel-fibered bone tissue and several growth marks in the pericortical region. In juvenile individuals, fibrolamellar bone tissue is restricted to the perimedullary regions of propodials as remnants of bone formed during the earliest stages of ontogeny. The epipodials are characterized by having parallel-fibered bone tissue present in their cortices; however, periodic arrests in growth are recorded at various times. Remnants of fibrolamellar bone tissue formed during early ontogeny occur in the epipodials of only a few individuals. Interelement variation is evident, in terms of variation in the orientation of vascular canals between individuals and within the same diaphyseal cross-sections. Different elements show varying cross-sectional geometry, which appear to be correlated with the fossorial behavior of the species. Our results show that of all the long bones, the tibia is least remodeled during ontogeny and it is therefore the best element for skeletochronology.  相似文献

Data from carcasses of 210 cattle (119 bulls and 91 steers) from 4 breed types, serially slaughtered from approximately 200-800 kg kg liveweight were used to test the hypothesis of similar gender dimorphism among breeds in relation to carcass bone growth and distribution. Relative to total bone weight, breed types tended to have similar growth rates for all bones other than the cervical vertebrae, ribs, tibia and fibula, and tarsus. Adjusted to the same total bone weight there were significant differences among breed types in bone weight distribution, but the differences were very small and probably of little economic importance. Castration stimulated growth of the lumbar vertebrae, hindlimb bones, patella and hindquarter bones but inhibited growth of the ribs, scapula, carpus, forelimb bone, and forequarter bone. At the same total bone weight, steers as compared to bulls showed a shift in bone weight distribution towards the hindquarter, pistol and long bones. There were small but significant breed x gender interactions in the distribution of some bones.  相似文献
