The diel and horizontal distributions of Bythotrephes longimanus Leydig, Leptodora kindti (Focke) and Anomopoda (cladocerans), as well as several life history parameters of each developmental stage of B. longimanus were studied in the non-stratified Biesbosch reservoirs. Anomopoda avoided the surface layer during the day only in the pelagic zone. In the surface layer near the shore, however, they were very abundant. Because densities in the pelagic zone during the day were very low, and high during the night, the population undoubtedly moved from the littoral zone or from the sediments to the pelagic. Accumulation of zooplankton at the littoral site is either the result of random dispersal or wind-induced movements. Bythotrephes' diel distribution pattern is possibly related to that of their prey, the anomopods. Leptodora mostly exhibited a normal diel vertical migration with a small amplitude. Wind most likely influenced the horizontal distribution of the zooplankton. Bythotrephes body length increased with higher temperatures, whereas spine length was constant throughout the year. Bythotrephes can already be fertile in the first developmental stage, indicating that a rapid adaptation to a favourable environment is possible. The number of parthenogenetically produced eggs per ovigerous female was higher at the start of the growing season and constant throughout the rest of the year. Relatively few resting eggs and males were found in autumn.  相似文献

Sedimentary and water column evidence from 45 boat-accessible and eight backcountry lakes was used to investigate the distribution of Bythotrephes longimanus in northeast Minnesota, USA, and adjacent Ontario, Canada. The results expand the documented range of Bythotrephes in Minnesota from Lake Superior, Island Lake, and Saganaga Lake to Flour Lake, Greenwood Lake, McFarland Lake, Pine Lake, and Caribou Lake as well as to Saganagons Lake in Ontario. The latter three lakes are located in roadless landscapes without motorized boat access. Results confirm that Bythotrephes is no longer present in Boulder Lake or Fish Lake (St. Louis County, Minnesota), providing the first evidence of range compression (extinction following introduction) of this species in North America. Distributional expansion was confined to a corridor along the international border between northeast Minnesota and Ontario. Lakes along the invasion corridor were deeper, more transparent, and had lower chlorophyll concentration, on average, compared to other lakes studied. The pattern of range expansion provided an opportunity to test the predictions of a forecasting model for Bythotrephes occurrence (MacIsaac et al. 2000 Archiv für Hydrobiologie 149: 1–21) based on habitat characteristics. The model predicted 51% of the surveyed inland lakes to be susceptible to invasion, however, only 13% were actually invaded, implying strong dispersal constraints. Application of the forecasting model to a broader set of 179 Minnesota lakes predicted that 41% may be vulnerable to establishment by Bythotrephes based on habitat characteristics, offering an estimate of the state’s overall lake susceptibility (i.e., fundamental niche) to invasion. The results of this study provide evidence for the importance of a low-light refuge where Bythotrephes can minimize vulnerability to fish predation as a key habitat feature not considered by the forecasting model.  相似文献

In Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, the predaceous cladocerans Leptodora kindti and Bythotrephes longimanus segregate along spatial and temporal dimensions. In spring (April–May/June), Bythotrephes longimanus occurs below 0–20 m, while Leptodora is absent. In summer and early autumn (July–September/October), when Leptodora dominates during daytime in the 0–20 m depth, Bythotrephes longimanus also lives in deeper zones. Food competition and fish predation pressure may be the cause of differences in ecology of Leptodora and Bythotrephes acquired during evolution. Due to its transparency and tolerance of higher temperature, Leptodora could avoid fish predation and, therefore, competes with Bythotrephes longimanus successfully. In addition, the differences between the two species may account for the spatial and temporal niche segregation in oligotrophic Swiss Lakes. But spatial niche segregation is less important in mesotrophic lakes with high prey density than in oligotrophic lakes with low prey density. In small, eutrophic lakes importance of temporal niche segregation also decreases, and Bythotrephes is seldom or not present. The preference of Bythotrephes to live in deeper water to avoid fish predation during summer may be the cause of its difficulties to establish itself in small and eutrophic lakes with high prey densities, where the hypolimnion is missing or anoxic. In the spring, Bythotrephes exhibits r-strategy (smaller body size and a higher fecundity), the female is already fertile after the first molt. In the summer, a K-strategy prevails (larger body length and lower fecundity than in the spring), and female Bythotrephes are fertile only after the second molt. Shortage of prey (biomass of Bosmina and Daphniadecreased after June especially in the surface layers) and the maximum fish predation pressure in summer may change the life strategy of Bythotrephes: while fecundity decreases from generation to generation, body length increases. Enhanced prey densities (e.g. during mesotrophic conditions in L. Lucerne) lead to larger individuals in summer and autumn.  相似文献

The distributions of the coexisting, planktonic, predatory cladocerans Bythotrephes longimanus and Leptodora kindtii were studied at four different stations (Langenargen-Arbon, Fischbach-Uttwil, Bregenzer Bucht and Zeller See) of a great lake, Lake Constance. The stations Langenargen-Arbon and Fischbach-Uttwil are deep (>200 m) with a high density of the coregonid fish Coregonus lavaretus, the stations Bregenzer Bucht and Zeller See are shallow (<60 m) with lower densities of coregonid fish. B. longimanus was present in the pelagic zone from mid May to November at all stations. L. kindtii generally appeared slightly later in the year than B. longimanus. Peak abundances of B. longimanus with more than 5000 ind. m–2 (Langenargen-Arbon) appeared in late spring. During summer, when predation pressure by fish is high, abundance of B. longimanus decreased gradually. In contrast, L. kindtii displayed maximum abundances with more than 18 000 ind. m–2 (Zeller See) in summer. During the summer months, B. longimanus lived in greater depths than L. kindtii. Differences of vertical distribution between both species were most pronounced at the deep stations (Langenargen-Arbon, Fischbach-Uttwil). Analysis of stomachs of the planktivorous fish Coregonus lavaretus showed that B. longimanus was preferred by C. lavaretus over all other prey; Ivlev's selectivity index was 0.97–0.99. Due to this high positive selection for B. longimanus by coregonids, it is surprising that the cladoceran could maintain its existence since the first recordings in 1877. Spatial refuge or indigestible resting eggs may be the underlying mechanism for this phenomenon.  相似文献

A few years after it invaded, the amphipod Corophium curvispinum Sars appeared to be the most numerous macroinvertebrate species in the River Rhine. From 1987 to 1991 the densities of this species on the stones of groins in the Lower Rhine at a depth of 0.5 m increased from 2 to 200000 specimens per m2. In the Lower Rhine and its branches the densities of C. curvispinum increased with increasing current velocities and with increasing water depths. So far, a maximum population density of 750000 specimens per m2 has been found in the Lower Rhine, which is many times the densities recorded elsewhere. Population parameters, densities and distribution of C. curvispinum were studied in the Lower Rhine and its branches, using artificial substrates and sampling stones from groins. The success of this immigrant is related to its competitive strategy, which shows several aspects of a r-strategy. In addition, the heavily eutrophicated Lower Rhine provides abundant food (phytoplankton, suspended organic matter) for this opportunistic filter-feeder. The increased salinity and water temperatures in the Lower Rhine resulting from industrial discharges have contributed to the current success of this southern species originating in brackish waters. The very high densities of C. curvispinum might have an enormous impact on the river ecosystem by changing food webs.  相似文献

The onychopod cladoceran Cercopagis that recently invaded the Baltic Sea is reported from new zones of the northern Baltic proper. Because of successful survival and an expanding distribution range, the addition of Cercopagis to the Baltic fauna is considered to be permanent. What has previously been cited as Cercopagis pengoi encompasses the morphology of several other species, subspecies and forms. Either a number of morphologically similar species is present, or there is a number of spurious species in Cercopagis. The last hypothesis is favoured. The spatial distribution pattern of Cercopagis, as well as that of total zooplankton, was correlated with depth. Deep (>100 m) and shallow (<10 m) stations had significantly lower abundance than stations of intermediate depth (<100 m). An overview of the distribution of C. pengoi group in fresh and brackish waters suggests a high tolerance to environmental factors, but with differences among taxa. Due to this ecological flexibility, the colonization of the Baltic is not unexpected. Increasing salinity may restrict dispersal of cercopagids to the southern areas of the Baltic and to the North Sea, but inland lakes (e.g. in Sweden) present an ecological profile suitable for colonization.  相似文献

Bythotrephes is presently extending its distribution to basins throughout Europe and North America. We used long term data (1880–1997) on Bythotrephes longimanus in Eurasian waterbodies to characterize its ecology and tolerance to different ecological factors. Depending on season and environmental conditions of the waterbody, Eurasian B. longimanus may undergo cyclomorphosis and can exist as two distinct forms ( B. longimanus or B. cederstroemi). Regional forms of the species ( B. l. var. balticus, B. l. var. it transcaucasicus, and B. l. var. arcticus) have also been described. Occurrence and density of Bythotrephes populations varies across geographical scales, and are apparently affected primarily by water temperature and salinity. Bythotrephes is limited to regions where water temperature ranges between 4 and 30 ^C, although the species prefers waters between 10 and 24 °C. Bythotrephes tolerates salinity values between 0.04 and 8.0¡, though it prefers water between 0.04 and 0.4¡. These factors strongly restrict Bythotrephes' distribution in warmer and more saline waters of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), particularly in southern Russia and Kazakhstan. Local abundance and distribution of Bythotrephes is affected by abiotic factors, including basin morphometry and flushing rate, temperature, oxygen concentration and pH, as well as by lake trophic status and fish predation. Planktivorous fish may restrict habitat use by Bythotrephes to regions of basins where overlap between these groups is minimized. Rivers, canals, and ephemeral waterbodies serve as important modes of Bythotrephes' dispersal throughout the CIS and western Europe. Morphological adaptations (e.g. a long caudal process, cyclic parthenogenesis, and production of resting eggs) permit Bythotrephes to tolerate seasonally inhospitable conditions, assist in its dispersal and range extension, and minimize fish predation.  相似文献

Diurnal vertical migration (DVM) of Daphnia hyalina in Lake Bled was most intense during summer stratification. The extent of DVM varied with the size of the animal and its reproductive state. Migration distances were shortest in immature specimens and longest in ovigerous females. During daytime, ovigerous females stayed deeper in the water column than females without ova or immatures. The daytime temperature of water at the median depth of the ovigerous females did not exceed 10 °C, even in the warmest season. At night they migrated upward to an environment which was warmer by as much as 9 °C.Laboratory observations indicate that specimen's size and water temperature determine the velocity of passive sinking, such that morning descent of the different groups of Daphnia can be explained by passive sinking alone. Our hypothesis is that the distribution of different groups of D. hyalina in Lake Bled is influenced by two types of predators: fish (Perca fluviatilis L. and Rutilus rutilus (L.)) and larvae of Chaoborus flavicans (Meig.), the latter appearing in the epilimnion during the night. Fish predation has a key-role at the beginning of thermal stratification. Supposing that in spring the gene pool of Daphnia consists of a mix of different genotypes, distributed at different depths during the day, fish predation combined with a presence of fish chemicals favored genotypes with a lower day-depth during the spring/summer period.  相似文献

Biological invasions are a leading threat to freshwater biodiversity worldwide. A central unanswered question of invasion ecology is why some introduced populations establish while most fail. Answering this question will allow resource managers to increase the specificity and effectiveness of control efforts and policy. We studied the establishment of spiny water flea (Bythotrephes longimanus) in the United States and Canada by modeling introduction failure caused by demographic stochasticity, environmental variation, and seasonal environmental forcing. We compared predicted establishment rates with observed invasions of inland lakes in Ontario, Canada. Our findings suggest that environmental forcing can cause “windows” of invasion opportunity so that timing of introductions might be a greater determinant of population establishment than demographic stochasticity and random environmental variation. We expect this phenomenon to be exhibited by species representing a wide range of life histories. For spiny water flea in North America, a large window of invasion opportunity opens around the fourth week of May, persists through the summer, and closes with decreasing water temperatures in autumn. These results show how timing of introductions with respect to seasonally forced environmental drivers can be a key determinant of establishment success. By focusing on introductions during windows of invasion opportunity, resource managers can more effectively control invasion rates.  相似文献

As in most other Chydoridae, Alona affinis has two juvenile instars in both sexes and development of the male is similar to that of previously studied species. Several interesting traits were found in the development of the first trunk limb. Males with abnormal morphology in sex-linked characters and ephippial females with a postabdomen similar to that of the adult male are described.  相似文献

This note reports on the presence of a well established population of the isopod Synidotea laevidorsalis (Miers) in the Gironde estuary (southwestern France). This species is new for the European fauna. S. laevidorsalis is a nonendemic cool-temperate to subtropical, shallow-water species which was probably introduced into the study area from Asia. In the salinity range of 1 to 10 g 1-1 of the Gironde the species constitutes an important component of the brackish-water hyperbenthic community. The population was already present in 1975 when it was misidentified as the native species Idotea emarginata (Fabricius).  相似文献

A taxometric analysis ofLimonium species in Western Europe has provided evidence for the subgeneric groupings proposed by other authors. A cluster analysis suggests that the origin of sexual and agamospermous species has taken place separately. Sexual and agamospermous species are usually clustered separately. The lack of a sexual process in many agamospermous species, as indicated by the distribution of incompatibility morphs and by very low pollen fertility, suggests that the evolution of sexual and agamospermous taxa has been by different processes. It is suggested that following the origin of agamospermous species or species groups by hybridisation, subsequent evolution in the agamospermous taxa has occurred by asexual means. Evidence from the distribution of pollen/stigma incompatibility morphs, especially the existence of self-compatible agamospermous species supports this hypothesis.  相似文献

Members of the order Cladocera show remarkable morphological and ecological diversity. One of the most spectacular adaptive radiations in this group has involved species of the suborder Onychopoda, which have adopted a novel feeding strategy, predation, and have colonized habitats with a broad range of salinities. In order to evaluate the origins and systematics of this group, we derived a molecular phylogeny for its three component families including nine of 10 recognized genera based on three mitochondrial (mt) gene sequences: cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), the ribosomal small and large subunits (12S and 16S) and one nuclear gene sequence: the small ribosomal subunit (18S). Maximum‐parsimony, maximum‐likelihood and neighbour‐joining phylogenetic analyses were largely congruent, supporting the monophyly of the suborder and each of its families. Comparative analyses of data based on total evidence and the conditional combination of the ribosomal genes produced relatively congruent patterns of phylogenetic affinity. By contrast, analyses of single gene results were inconsistent in recovering the monophyletic groups identified by the multigene analyses. Based on the reconstructed phylogeny, we discriminate among the existing hypotheses regarding the evolutionary history of the onychopods. We identify a prolonged episode of speciation from the Miocene to the Pleistocene with two pulses of diversification. We discuss our results with reference to the geological history of the Ponto‐Caspian basin, the region which fostered the onychopod radiation.  相似文献

A survey of species belonging to the family Mysidae, conducted in June 2007 in fresh- to brackish waters of eastern France, revealed a recent range extension of the invasive Ponto-Caspian species Hemimysis anomala to the Moselle, Saône, and Rhône rivers. In the estuary of the Grand Rhône it reached for the first time the Mediterranean coast. The network of navigation canals in NE France was likely a key element of its north to south pathway starting from the Rhine River. Important range extensions were also noted for Limnomysis benedeni in this network and in the Moselle River. The euryhaline species Neomysis integer, endemic in coastal waters of the NE Atlantic, was found in the Rhône delta, thus confirming previous very rare records in the 1930–1950s from the Mediterranean coast of France. Invasion mechanisms and pathways, expansion potential, and establishment conditions of the species are discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the morphology of adult and juvenile stages of females and males of Bosmina longispina Leydig from a North Icelandic population. There are additional setae near the basis of the second antenna and between its branches in adult males, not described in Bosmina, but known from other Anomopoda. New features of female morphology are also found. The development of the first limb and postabdomen of the male is described in detail. In juvenile males of B. longispina (belonging to subgenus Eubosmina), characteristics of morphology, similar to those in adult males of other subgenera are found.Abbreviations af antennal flap - as additional setae of male - bs basis of seta of clasper - bc basis of postabdominal claws - ch clasper hook - cl clasper - cs seta of clasper - cw claws of postabdomen - de distal endite of the first limb - dr dorsal row of denticles on male postabdomen - df dorsal fold of carapace - eh ejector hooks of limb I - ep epipodite - ex exopodite - fp frontal head pore - fs frontal seta - hs hair sensilla - in incision of juvenile male postabdomen - ir interrupted rows of setules on postabdomen - Ip lateral head pore - mp median head pore - mpr maxillar process of limb I - mr main row of denticles on postabdominal claws - pe predistal endite of limb I - pf preantennal fold of valve - pl plate above postabdominal setae - ps postabdominal setae - rs rudimentary setae - sr second row of denticles near basis of claws - vf ventral fold of valve - vr ventral row of denticles on male postabdomen  相似文献
