Euphorbia characias is a Mediterranean spurge with a diplochorous dispersal system: after a ballistic dispersal that scatters the seeds, some ant species find and retrieve the seeds to their nest (myrmecochorous dispersal). The seed dispersal curve generated by ants in an abandoned field was described and partitioned according to ant size and to the distance to nest entrance from where seeds fell after ballistic dispersal. Both variables (ant size, distance to nest) affected dispersal distance. The seed dispersal curve showed a peak at short distance (median=1m) and a tail extending to 9.4m. The peak and the tail are explained differently. Short distances are usually generated by small ants (Pheidole pallidula and Tapinoma nigerrimum; 0.56±0.41m [n=48]) both from the nearest or farther nest entrances. The tail of the curve is generated disproportionately by big ants (Aphaenogaster senilis and Messor barbarus; 2.09±1.71m [n=61]) from farther nests. Seeds have a much greater probability (P=0.734) of being transported to nests which are not the nearest. This effect is largely due to transportation by big ants.  相似文献

Bees are known to collect pollen and nectar to provide their larvae and themselves with food. That bees, especially the tropical stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini), also collect plant resins has, however, been barely addressed in scientific studies on resource use in bees. Resins are used for nest construction, nest maintenance and nest defence. Furthermore, some South‐East Asian species transfer resin‐derived terpenes to their cuticular profiles. The resin requirement of bees is in turn used by certain plant species, which attract bees either for pollination by providing resin in their inflorescences, or for seed dispersal by providing resin in their seed capsules (mellitochory). Mellitochory is found in the eucalypt tree Corymbia torelliana, the resin of which is collected by Australian stingless bees. We investigated how the interaction between C. torelliana and resin‐collecting bees affects the chemical ecology of two Australian stingless bee genera by comparing the chemical profiles of eight bee species with resin from C. torelliana fruits. The two bee genera differed significantly in their chemical profiles. Similar to South‐East Asian stingless bees, 51% of all compounds on the body surfaces of the five Tetragonula species were most likely derived from plant resins. Up to 32 compounds were identical with compounds from C. torelliana resin, suggesting that Tetragonula species include C. torelliana compounds in their chemical profiles. By contrast, few or none resinous compounds were found on the body surfaces of the three Austroplebeia species sampled. However, one prominent but as yet unknown substance was found in both C. torelliana resin and the chemical profiles of all Tetragonula and four Austroplebeia colonies sampled, suggesting that most colonies (76%) gathered resin from C. torelliana. Hence, C. torelliana resin may be commonly collected by Australian stingless bees and, along with resins from other plant species, shape their chemical ecology.  相似文献

The relationships between fruit morphology and the foraging behavior of the Yakushima macaque, Macaca fuscata yakui were studied during a 9-month field study and series of laboratory experiments on Yakushima Island, southern Japan. These relationships may affect seed germination traits through seed dispersal. The macaques foraging behavior was observed in order to obtain data concerning the treatment of pulp and seeds. Seeds in feces and spat seeds were collected and analyzed. A linear discriminant analysis of the data led to the following results: (i) an increase in the relative flesh volume of a fruit was one of the potential factors which increased the probability of seed dispersal by the macaques; and (ii) seed size was an important parameter in relation to the type of seed dispersal (by defecation or spitting out). The germination test was conducted in a laboratory, then the germination rates and delays of dispersed seeds were compared with those of seeds collected directly from trees. The germination of dispersed seeds of Ficus thunbergii, Eurya japonica, and Vaccinium bracteatum, was significantly enhanced by passage through the macaques gut. The enhanced germination behavior was not seen in larger seeds, such as those of Psychotria serpens, Myrsine seguinii, Diospyros morrisiana, and Neolitsea sericea. The germination enhancement in small-seeded plants could be due to a sorting effect from the passage through the gut, which selects seeds with a narrower range of germination traits.  相似文献

Isolated-bout method to estimate the retention times and dispersal distances was applied to the seed dispersal by red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) and Humboldts woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha) in a lowland tropical forest at La Macarena, on the border of the Macarena and Tinigua National Parks, the Department of Meta, Colombia. Continuous observations were made on the feeding and ranging behavior of well-habituated troops of howler monkeys and woolly monkeys as well as continuous collection of monkeys feces. We selected out the isolated-bout as a feeding bout on the specific species that was only once recorded within 48 h before the seeds of that species appeared in the feces of monkeys. In that case, the seeds were strongly suggested to come from that isolated bout. Then retention times, route seed dispersal distances and direct seed dispersal distances were estimated. Howler monkeys, which are regarded as generalist herbivores, showed longer retention times and dispersal distances along monkeys route than did woolly monkeys, which are specialist frugivores. However, the direct distances that seeds were carried from the mother tree were not significantly greater for howler monkeys than for woolly monkeys. This shows that both retention time and movement patterns by the monkeys, especially the total ranging area, influence the direct distance that seeds are carried from the mother tree.  相似文献

Summary Antibodies were raised against a synthetic tetradecameric peptide with an amino acid sequence, DLIQEGNIGLMKAV, which corresponds to the most highly conserved region of bacterial RNA polymerase factors. In a Western-blot analysis of total Escherichia coli proteins, the antiserum reacted specifically with at least three proteins with apparent molecular weights of 75 kDa, 27 kDa and 23 kDa, in addition to the known factors (70 and 32). The majorities of 70 and 32 were recovered as associated forms with the RNA polymerase on glycerol gradient centrifugation, while the other cross-reacting proteins were not. Unambiguous evidence was obtained which indicated that the intracellular level of 32 increased rapidly upon heatshock, at least in the strain containing high copy numbers of the rpoH gene.  相似文献

The percentage and the rate of germination of seeds of three varieties of Florence fennel was higher in the dark than in the light, the high temperature cut-off points being between 27.2 and 29.4°C. The optimum temperature for germination was between 20 and 25°C. Seeds of all three varieties responded to incubation in solutions containing gibberellin A4/7 mixture (GA4/7; Regulex), giving higher germination in the light at temperatures from 20 to 30°C. Seeds steeped for 4 h at 25°C or for 24 h at 5°C in GA4/7 solutions gave a higher percentage and increased rate of emergence as compared with untreated dry seeds, when sown in compost at 25°C; steeping in water alone was also beneficial. In general, drying the treated seeds before sowing reduced the rate but sometimes increased the percentage of germination as compared with seeds sown when still moist. Seeds harvested from secondary umbels of var. Zefa fino germinated better both in the light and dark than those taken from primary umbels.Abbreviations GA4/7 a commercial mixture of the gibberellins A4 and A7 (trade name Regulex)  相似文献

Summary Using gas-chromatographic methods, the variability of the contents of monoterpene hydrocarbons (-pinene, -pinene, 3carene and limonene) in the resin of silver fir seeds (Abies alba Mill.) was studied. Resin cavities were characterized according to their position on the seed surface. It was estabilished that the terpene content of the resin of cavities localized on the abaxialadaxial surfaces of the seed differs significantly, creating a gradient of resin composition around the circumference of the seed. The differences between various resin cavities of single seeds were greater than the differences between different seeds of a single cone and between seeds of various cones on a single tree. An accurate definition of the resin cavity location on the seeds appears to be a fundamental condition for the collection of a sample representing the resin composition of individual trees. Resin biosynthesis in the course of organogenesis and the control of terpene contents in the resin of various locations on the seed and the cone are discussed.  相似文献

The levels of certain essential amino acids, in particular cysteine, lysine and methionine, in the seed storage protein of a commercial spring variety of rape, Brassica napus, have been increased by the introduction of an antisense gene for cruciferin, which is the most abundant storage protein in rapeseed. The antisense construct contained part of the cruA gene in an inverted orientation, and the gene was driven by the 5 flanking region of the gene for napin such that antisense RNA was expressed in a seed-specific manner. The construct was introduced by Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer. In self-pollinated seeds (T1 seeds) of transgenic plants there was a reduction in the levels of the 11 and 2/32/3 subunits of cruciferin, whereas the level of the 44 subunit was unchanged. The total protein and lipid contents of transgenic seeds did not differ significantly from that of normal seeds. Seeds with reduced amounts of cruciferin accumulated higher amounts of napin than non-transformed seeds, but the level of oleosin was unaffected. Amino-acid analysis of the seed storage protein revealed that T1 seeds with reduced amounts of cruciferin contained higher relative levels of three essential amino acids, namely, lysine, methionine and cysteine, with increases of 10%, 8% and 32% over the respective levels in non-transgenic seeds (B. napus cv Westar).  相似文献

Seeds of the Japanese walnut, Juglans ailanthifolia, are usually scatter-hoarded by two rodent species, the Japanese squirrel Sciurus lis and the field mouse Apodemus speciosus, but only by the latter in several areas where S. lis is absent. We examined seed-size-mediated interactions of these three species across a wide geographic range. Field tracking of walnuts with miniature radio-transmitters revealed that squirrels hoarded larger seeds more frequently and at greater distances than smaller seeds. In contrast, mice hoarded smaller seeds more frequently and transported them farther than larger seeds. These seed dispersers could affect the evolution of seed size because seeds hoarded at sites farther from source trees are known to survive better until germination and as seedlings. We expect that larger seeds may be advantageous in regeneration if the main seed dispersers are squirrels, whereas smaller seeds may be advantageous if mice are the dominant dispersers. These predictions were supported by the fact that seed size was smaller on islands inhabited only by mice and at the edge of the squirrel distribution, compared to areas where mice and squirrels are both common.  相似文献

When a host is stung by a parasitoid female in the aphid-aphidiid association Myzus persiae Sulzer-Aphidius colemani Viereck, four host responses have been observed: 1) a host develops into a mummy, 2) it dies very soon after it was stung, 3) it develops a cellular immune response, 4) it shows no apparent perturbation subsequent to the sting. The ratios of the responses are clearly determined by the type, the number and the rank of the sting and also by the experience of the female. Some assumptions concerning the cause of the host response are discussed.

Oxindole-3-acetic acid (OxIAA) has been identified in germinating seeds of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Seeds germinated for 5 d contained 2.7 ng OxIAA·g-1 (dry weight) whereas ungerminated seeds contained 0.2 ng·g-1. Isotopically labelled OxIAA was formed in seeds incubated with [1-14C]-, [2-14C]- or [2H5]indole-3-acetic acid.Abbreviations DDC sodium diethyldithiocarbamate - GC gas chromatography - HPLC high-performance liquid chromatography - IAA indole-3-acetic acid - MS mass spectrometry - OxIAA oxindole-3-acetic acid - PVP polyvinylpyrrolidone - TMS trimethylsilyl  相似文献

The objectives of this work were to isolate regenerative genotypes from the alfalfa Canadian cultivar Rambler to perform the genetic analysis of somatic embryogenesis in this species and to introgress regeneration favourable alleles into Argentinean alfalfa elite germplasm. For regeneration inheritance studies, greenhouse established plants from a cross between a Rambler derived regenerative clone and a non-regenerative Argentinean clone as well as self-pollinated progenies of these clones were analyzed. The results showed that somatic embryogenesis is under the control of two complementary genes. The introgression of somatic embryogenesis favourable alleles was performed using two populations derived from crosses between regenerative clones, obtained in the first step of this work, and non-regenerative clones of Argentinean alfalfa elite populations. Twenty-seven plants obtained through this process showed somatic embryogenesis ability. Two of them, designated as INTA R1 and INTA R2, exhibited a high regeneration capacity as well as high regeneration multiplicity. Our results demonstrate that Rambler derived somatic embryogenesis favourable alleles are successfully expressed in Argentinean elite alfalfa genetic background rendering it suitable for tissue culture-based breeding methodologies.  相似文献

Summary Two carpenter bees (Xylocopa spp.) in southern Israel both use the asclepiad Calotropis procera as a primary nectar source. This plant genus is coevolved with carpenter bees, and aspects of the insect-flower interaction in Israel suggest that the smaller bee, X. sulcatipes, is the natural co-adapted pollinator, a view borne out by the geographical distributions of the species concerned. There are significant mismatches between the plant and the larger X. pubescens, involving physical fit and behaviour. These mismatches are particularly evident when the physiologies of the bees and the plant are considered. The different sizes and colours of the two bees lead to different daily activity patterns, only X. sulcatipes being thermally suited to, and thus abundant at, times of maximum nectar production by Calotropis. Similarly the water requirements of X. sulcatipes are finely balanced with the water production in the floral nectar; this bee gains just enough water when foraging to restore its blood concentration and production in the floral nectar; for deposition in the nest. X. pubescens does not incur net water loss in flight and gains too much water from Calotropis flowers, necessitating copious urination and tonguelashing. Hence physiological information can be of use in deciphering insect-plant coevolutionary patterns, and the water component of nectar is confirmed as a potentially major determinant of foraging activities. The circumstances where this will be particularly true, and cases where it may not apply, are discussed.  相似文献

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) seeds contain the storage protein -conglycinin, encoded by a multigene family. -Conglycinin consists of three subunits; , , and . A genomic clone for a -subunit of -conglycinin has been characterized by restriction-enzyme mapping and hybrid selected in-vitro translation followed by immunoprecipitation. In order to determine the developmental regulation of this -subunit gene, its expression was studied in seeds of transgenic petunia (Petunia hybrida) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants. The -subunit expressed in seeds of petunia and tobacco was recognized by anti--conglycinin serum at a relative molecular mass of 53 000, equivalent to that of the native protein. Separation of the petunia-seed proteins by isoelectric focusing followed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblot analysis showed that multiple isoelectric forms of the -subunit were produced. There was approximately a twofold variation in the accumulation of the -subunit protein in the mature seeds of transgenic petunia plants, each containing a single -subunit gene. However, the level of protein accumulation in mature seeds and the amount of -subunit mRNA in developing seeds was not correlated. Accumulation of the -subunit protein in transgenic seeds was less than the -subunit protein that accumulated in transgenic petunia seeds containing a single -subunit gene and less than the amount of the -subunit in mature soybean seeds which contain 8–13 -subunit genes. In transgenic tobacco plants, the accumulation of the -subunit protein in seeds was generally well correlated with the number of genes that were incorporated in the different transformants.Abbreviations kb kilobase - kDa kilodalton - Mr relative molecular mass - SDS-PAGE sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis  相似文献

Summary Two categories of foraging worker were found inPachycondyla caffraria from Senegal. One specialises in hunting and the other in collecting sweet liquid food. In the category of hunters there are two sub-categories: stingers and transporters. When the workers were offered a group of live termites (20–30Microcerotermes sp.), two types of behaviour were observed: some workers stung and paralysed the prey, while others transported the termites back to the nest. While on a foraging raid, the two roles are undertaken by two distinct groups of workers, and the roles are not interchanged during the course of the raid. The number of hunters, liquid collectors and transporters of prey are highly correlated with colony size.  相似文献

Samples of the phytoplankton in a freshwater lake, Lake Liddell, New South Wales (Lat: 32° 22 S, Long. 150° 1 E) were collected every 4 weeks between October 1987 and November 1988. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from 1.8 g 1–1 to 9.1 g 1–1 and were positively correlated with the following nutrient parameters: total and nett mass additions of nitrate/nitrite-N and total-N, total additions of Kjeldahl-N, and nett mass addition N-P ratios. There was no correlation between lake nutrient concentrations and chlorophyll a. Factors other than nutrient concentrations appeared to be effecting chlorophyll a concentrations as summer levels were low despite nutrient concentrations being at a maximum. In spring and summer the phytoplankton was dominated by chlorophytes, with dinoflagellates and diatoms most abundant in autumn. During winter cyanobacteria were the most abundant. The relative abundance of chlorophytes was positively correlated with in lake nitrate/nitrite-N concentrations whereas the relative abundance of cyanobacteria was negatively correlated with this parameter. Based on chlorophyll a concentrations and the phytoplankton flora Lake Liddell can be classified as mesotrophic.  相似文献

Summary Three genes which code for variant -conglycinin subunits were identified. Alleles Cgy 1 S and Cgy 2 S were codominant with Cgy 1 and Cgy 2 and produced and subunits, respectively, with reduced electrophoretic mobility. Allele Cgy 3 D increased the mobility of at least one polypeptide in the subunit family and exhibited incomplete dominance. Gene loci Cgy 2/Cgy 2 S and Cgy 3 D /cgy 3 D were linked, whereas Cgy 1/Cgy 1 S / cgy 1 segregated independently of the others. Techniques developed for purification of normal -conglycinin subunits were effective in purifying the altered subunits. Deglycosylated variant proteins from seeds containing the alleles Cgy 1 S , Cgy 2 S , or Cgy 3 D also has altered mobility relative to deglycosylated normal proteins. Therefore, the altered subunits contained changes in their amino acid sequences rather than in their carbohydrate moieties. This interpretation is consistent with the observed codominant or incompletely dominant mode of inheritance for these alleles and suggests that each contains an altered nucleotide sequence in the structural gene. A fourth variant, which exhibited doublet and a electrophoretic bands, was inherited in a recessive fashion. Deglycosylated subunit proteins from this variant were identical in electrophoretic mobility to those of the deglycosylated normal protein. This suggests that the doublet phenotype resulted from an alteration in the carbohydrate moiety of these subunits. The gene or genes which condition this variant presumably are required for normal post-translational modification of the subunit carbohydrates and as such may be useful for investigating these events.Cooperative research of USDA-ARS and the Indiana Agric. Dichrostachys cinerea seeds are impermeable to water and do not germinate readily. The plant, however, contributes to a bush encroachment problem, minimising visibility in wildlife reserves and reducing the area available for grazing. Natural dormancy-breaking conditions must therefore exist, promoting the germinability of these normally dormant seeds. Diurnal temperature fluctuations (50°C/15°C), especially when combined with moisture were found to break dormancy. High temperatures, such as those generated by fire, destroyed seeds. Seeds ingested by herbivorous browsers such as nyala, became permeable. Seed burial for 48 weeks, was a more effective treatment than storage in promoting permeability. Distribution of D. cinerea will therefore be restricted to areas in which these conditions or factors occur. Seeds germinated optimally at 30C in the laboratory.  相似文献

To evaluate the effects of ingestion by birds on seed germination under natural conditions, we carried out germination experiments in the field using seeds of two Prunus species that have different fruit-ripening seasons. Germination of seeds with the following three treatments was compared: ingested seeds, seeds excreted after feeding of fruits to birds; extracted seeds, seeds deliberately extracted from the fruit pulp; and intact fruit, seeds in untreated intact fruit. Many ingested and extracted seeds of both Prunus species germinated during the first spring, and the difference in germination percentage between ingested and extracted seeds was not significant. Many seeds in intact fruit of Prunus sargentii also germinated during the first spring, but those of Prunus ssiori did not germinate until the second spring. Pulp removal through bird ingestion enabled rapid germination for the autumn-fruiting P. ssiori, whose fruit pulp was not likely to be decomposed until the first spring. In contrast, the effects of ingestion were not striking for the summer-fruiting P. sargentii, whose fruit pulp is quickly decomposed.  相似文献

Summary. Mutualistic associations between ants and plants often involve a third partner, scale insects (Hemiptera, Coccoidea). In southeast Asia, plant-ants of the genus Cladomyrma live together with coccoids in hollowed twigs of a wide range of ant-plants (myrmecophytes). Established colonies never lack sap-sucking scale insects and the ants appear to be dependent on the honeydew excretions of their trophobionts. Acquisition of scale insects thus seems to be an important step in the successful establishment of a new colony on a host plant. Coccoids may either be transported by a foundress ant on her nuptial flight (vertical transmission via co-dispersal) or ant and coccoid disperse on their own and associate anew during colony initiation (horizontal transmission). Here we test the assumption that founding gynes of Cladomyrma do not transport scale insects during their dispersal flight, and we determine when and how trophobionts are acquired. The results obtained in this study show that although coccoids are not carried by foundresses, their numbers within founding chambers of Cladomyrma increased with the founding stage. In all Cladomyrma species, colony-founding is claustral and the entrance hole into the nest chamber is first plugged with pith debris and later grows over by wound callus. However, access of trophobionts into hollow twigs is facilitated either by additional small openings (secondary slits) produced by the foundress ant after hollowing out a nest chamber or by the maintenance of an orifice at the entrance hole during the founding period. Immature pseudococcids experimentally placed onto twigs close to a Cladomyrma foundation readily entered these slits. Exclusion experiments suggest that foundresses of C. petalae are less successful in rearing their first offspring if entry of coccoids into founding chambers is prevented.Received 28 September 2003; revised 9 May and 11 October 2004; accepted 9 November 2004.  相似文献
