Providing research pigs with enrichment objects can encourage species-typical behavior such as rooting and foraging. The authors gave pigs hard plastic 'foraging balls' that resembled enrichment devices commonly used for nonhuman primates. Holes were custom-drilled into the balls, and animal caretakers filled them with palatable food items such as jellybeans, unsalted peanuts, cereal, Beggin' Strips, primate biscuits and dog biscuits. Staff members suspended the balls from chains in pigs' enclosures, ensuring that toys did not touch the floor. All pigs manipulated the balls and were able to obtain treats that were supplemental to their standard diet. The simple and effective enrichment device was easily incorporated into the daily routines of research facilities, with little disruption to schedules.  相似文献

Pigs used in research are often housed in barren environments. The effects of ice as a simple enrichment tool for newly weaned pigs were investigated. Four replicates of 120 pigs were separated into 3 groups. One group was given free access to blocks of ice (ice group), another group had access to Classic Kong toys (Kong group), and a 3rd group did not receive any enrichment (control group). The behavior of each group was observed every 5 min from 08:00 hr to 12:00 hr during 4 consecutive days. Pigs were motivated to explore the ice blocks (4.85% ± 1.34) over the Classic Kong toys (2.03% ± 0.59). No differences in other behaviors were found between treatments. Ice is an effective and easy-to-replace enrichment device. Blocks of ice can be used as enrichment devices for pigs housed in research facilities.  相似文献

Many experiments report that animals will work (lever press) for food in the presence of freely available identical food. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of applied ethologists because it seems to prove that animals have a need to express appetitive behavior. If this is the case, then it has implications for the provision of environmental enrichment for animals in captivity. In this experiment, we maintained 6 pigs in closed economy environments for three 120-hr choice periods in which they had continuous free access to operant and identical free food. In the experiment, we tested pigs using 2 different operant schedules, fixed ratio (FR) 5 and variable ratio (VR) 5. We used a VR schedule because many enrichment studies claim that unpredictability is an important characteristic that makes an enrichment device attractive. The results show that pigs exhibited a negligible level of contrafreeloading (M ± standard error of the mean proportion = 0.05 × 0.01). Furthermore, there were no significant differences between FRs and VRs of reinforcement.  相似文献

Animal welfare standards have been incorporated in EU legislation and in farm assurance schemes, based on scientific information and aiming to safeguard the welfare of the species concerned. Recently, emphasis has shifted from resource-based measures of welfare to animal-based measures, which are considered to assess more accurately the welfare status. The data used in this analysis were collected from April 2013 to May 2016 through the ‘Real Welfare’ scheme in order to assess on-farm pig welfare, as required for those finishing pigs under the UK Red Tractor Assurance scheme. The assessment involved five main measures (percentage of pigs requiring hospitalization, percentage of lame pigs, percentage of pigs with severe tail lesions, percentage of pigs with severe body marks and enrichment use ratio) and optional secondary measures (percentage of pigs with mild tail lesions, percentage of pigs with dirty tails, percentage of pigs with mild body marks, percentage of pigs with dirty bodies), with associated information about the environment and the enrichment in the farms. For the complete database, a sample of pens was assessed from 1928 farm units. Repeated measures were taken in the same farm unit over time, giving 112 240 records at pen level. These concerned a total of 13 480 289 pigs present on the farm during the assessments, with 5 463 348 pigs directly assessed using the ‘Real Welfare’ protocol. The three most common enrichment types were straw, chain and plastic objects. The main substrate was straw which was present in 67.9% of the farms. Compared with 2013, a significant increase of pens with undocked-tail pigs, substrates and objects was observed over time (P<0.05). The upper quartile prevalence was <0.2% for all of the four main physical outcomes, and 15% for mild body marks. The percentage of pigs that would benefit from being in a hospital pen was positively correlated to the percentage of lame pigs, and the absence of tail lesions was positively correlated with the absence of body marks (P<0.05, R>0.3). The results from the first 3 years of the scheme demonstrate a reduction of the prevalence of animal-based measures of welfare problems and highlight the value of this initiative.  相似文献

This study used a digesta transfer protocol to determine the site of absorption of lysine synthesized by the gastrointestinal microflora of pigs. Eight pigs were used, four with reentrant cannulas in the terminal ileum, two with simple T cannulas in the terminal ileum, and two intact. All pigs were given, for 5 days, the same low-protein diet that included fermentable carbohydrates. The diet of two pigs with reentrant cannulas (donor) and of the two intact (control) pigs was supplemented with (15)NH(4)Cl. The two other pigs with reentrant cannulas (acceptor pigs) and those with simple cannulas (used to supply unlabeled digesta) were given the same diet but unlabeled NH(4)Cl. Ileal digesta were collected continuously from all of the reentrant cannulas and kept on ice. All digesta from each donor pig were reheated and returned to the distal cannula of its companion acceptor, whose ileal digesta were discarded. Unlabeled ileal digesta from the pigs with simple cannulas were instilled into the distal cannulas of the donor pigs. At the end of the experiment, the average (15)N enrichment in the plasma free lysine of control pigs was 0.0407 atom % excess (APE); that of donor pigs was 0.0322 APE (79% of controls), whereas that of acceptor pigs was only 0.0096 APE (24% of controls). Due to nitrogen recycling, acceptor pigs had labeled lysine in the digesta of the stomach and small intestine, and donor pigs had labeled lysine in the digesta of the large intestine. If account is taken of the higher (15)N enrichment of microbial lysine in the large compared with the small intestine, it can be estimated that >90% of the absorption of microbial lysine took place in the small intestine.  相似文献

Guinea pig thymocytes were incubated with normal rabbit serum, which resulted in the death of a great majority of the cells. The remaining rabbit serum-resistant cells, representing less than 10% of the thymocytes, contained euchromatic DNA and were of intermediate size and low density. Functional tests indicated that they were enriched in immunologically mature cells, which responded to the mitogenic lectins phytohemagglutinin and concanavalin A, and were depleted of immature, spontaneously proliferating cells and in cells responding to the thymocyte growth peptide. The described procedure for enrichment of immunologically mature thymus cells in guinea pigs may become useful since glucocorticoid treatment, used in mice for enrichment of mature thymocytes, cannot be used for this purpose in guinea pigs.  相似文献

The performance of pigs is affected by the rate of nutrient absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, which depends in turn strongly on the rate of stomach emptying. The 13C breath test provides a non-invasive diagnostic tool to measure gastric emptying patterns. Despite the wide acceptance of this method in human intervention studies, it has not found its way to the domain of animal sciences. In this study, we used the breath test to measure gastric emptying in young growing pigs using [1-13C] octanoic acid to trace digesta solids and [1-13C] glycine to study liquids. Pigs were fed a starch-rich diet, varying in starch source (isolated starch from barley, maize or high-amylose maize) or form (isolated barley starch, ground barley or extruded barley), after which 13CO2 enrichment was frequently measured during 11 h. Outliers in 13CO2 enrichment in the response curve of each pig were identified with a Cookʼs distance outlier test in combination with a leave-one-out analysis. Effects of experimental treatments on breath test parameters were tested using a GLM. In general, pigs were easy to train and the tailor-made mask allowed effortless sampling. Gastric emptying of all pigs followed a biphasic pattern, with a higher 13C recovery during the first peak. The first peak in gastric emptying of solids reached its maximum enrichment within 2 h after feeding in all cases. For digesta liquids, this peak was reached earlier for pigs fed ground barley (2.2 h after feeding), compared to pigs fed diets containing isolated starch (2.8 h after feeding). The second peak in gastric emptying of solids was reached later for pigs fed ground barley (5.9 h after feeding), compared with pigs fed extruded barley (4.5 h after feeding) and pigs fed diets containing isolated barley starch (4.8 h after feeding). In conclusion, the 13C breath test is a convenient, non-invasive tool to gain more insights into the gastric emptying pattern of pigs.  相似文献

Most pigs in slatted systems are provided with enrichment meeting only minimum legal requirements. We aimed to explore the effects of a novel enrichment treatment consisting of daily provided fodder beet and jute bags for pigs in slatted systems, and investigate the timing of enrichment provision on performance, health and stress resilience. We used 280 weaners allocated into standard (S, meeting only legal requirements consisting of a plastic toy and softwood) or enriched (E) treatment (n = 14 groups/treatment). At regrouping during the grower to finisher transition, pigs were either kept in the same treatment (EE, SS) or switched from enriched to standard (ES) and vice versa (SE); each treatment was replicated on five groups. Pigs were weighted at the start and end of weaner, and finisher stage, and feed intake was recorded. Occurrence of scouring, respiratory problems, locomotor disorders, tail, ear, and body lesions were recorded twice a week. Ten males per treatment were sampled for saliva on days 1, 2 and 4, either postweaning or after the housing switch. Saliva samples were analysed for cortisol, alpha-amylase, haptoglobin (Hp), and adenosine deaminase. Additionally, these pigs were sampled for hair at the start and end of weaner, and end of finisher stage to analyse for hair cortisol and cortisone. We found that E weaners consumed less feed (P = 0.04), had better FCR (feed conversion ratio, P = 0.03) and less ear lesions for two weeks postweaning (P = 0.04), and tended to have lower occurrence of scouring (P = 0.07) and higher salivary cortisol concentrations (P = 0.09) than S weaners. Effects of enrichment treatment during weaner stage on performance were carried through to finisher stage, with EE and ES pigs having better FCR (P = 0.0009) and higher BW (P = 0.0001) compared to SS and SE pigs. E treatment during finisher stage decreased feed intake (P = 0.04) and tended to decrease Hp levels (P = 0.07). There was a significant interaction between enrichment treatments during weaner and finisher stages on finisher body lesions: EE finishers had less lesions than SS, ES, and SE finishers (P = 0.04). There were no other significant differences caused either by enrichment treatment during weaner/finisher stage or their interaction. We conclude that the novel enrichment applied at weaner stage had positive effects on ear lesions and performance, which were carried through to finisher stage. Body lesions were affected by its application during both stages, with finishers receiving the enrichment treatment throughout (EE) having reduced body lesions than the rest of the finishers.  相似文献

To determine the incidence of campylobacters in Northern Ireland pigs, ileal contents and anal swabs were taken shortly after death. Direct streaking onto Preston agar, and modified charcoal cefoperazone desoxycholate agar (mCCDA), were compared, as was enrichment in selective broths prior to streaking onto the corresponding solid medium. For anal swabs direct plating on mCCDA was most efficient, with 100% of samples positive, whilst for ileal contents enrichment in mCCD broth was best with 86% of samples positive. Although only 34% of ileal samples enriched in Preston broths were positive they yielded three species not isolated from mCCD broth, and hence indicated that some pigs were infected by at least two species of Campylobacter. Overall, the number of samples found to contain campylobacters, and the range of species isolated, was seen to be markedly affected by both the choice of selective medium and the isolation procedures.  相似文献

AIMS: To compare three culture methods to detect Yersinia enterocolitica from oral or rectal swabs from experimentally infected pigs. METHODS AND RESULTS: The three methods used were: direct plating on Cefsulodin-Irgasan-Novobiocin (CIN) agar, cold enrichment in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) followed by plating on CIN agar and selective enrichment with Luria-Bertani-Bile Salts Irgasan (LB-BSI) followed by plating on CIN agar. Selective enrichment with LB-BSI produced the highest recovery rate (63%), when compared with cold enrichment (52%) and plating on CIN agar alone (43%). Selective enrichment with LB-BSI was significantly (P < 0.02) more sensitive than direct plating on CIN agar and more sensitive than cold enrichment (P < 0.1). CONCLUSIONS, SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Selective enrichment with LB-BSI was more sensitive than the widely accepted method of cold enrichment and it reduced the time required for detection of Y. enterocolitica by three weeks. Selective enrichment with LB-BSI was also compatible with a multiplex PCR technique.  相似文献

Concrete Outdoor Runs (OUTRUNs) are a characteristic part of organic pig housing. They must allow species-specific behaviours such as rooting and elimination, as explicitly required by organic legislation of the European Union (EU). However, OUTRUN design often fails to fulfil behavioural needs, and excreta can cover large parts of the OUTRUN leading to poor pen hygiene and associated ammonia (NH3) emissions. This review integrates legislative, ethological and environmental requirements for OUTRUNs for organic growing-finishing pigs. While EU regulations specify some welfare-related standards for OUTRUNs (e.g. minimal space allowance), national and private standards interpret some aspects differently, e.g. the proportion of roofed and slatted floor area. Furthermore, reducing NH3 emissions is equally a challenge for organic systems, even though EU legislation does not explicitly refer to OUTRUNs. Depending on the actual use of the OUTRUN for elimination, higher space allowance compared to conventional production norms increases the potential for a large NH3-emitting surface. The design of pen features (e.g. roof, floor, enrichment) can encourage pigs to separate functional areas and consequently reduce the elimination area and associated NH3 emissions. While providing the main lying area indoors, resting outdoors should be possible for sub-groups during the day. A roof protects pigs and resources (e.g. bedding) from adverse weather, but the effect on pig welfare and NH3 emissions is site-specific. A floor design that ensures practicable manure removal and drainage is most important to reduce emissions. Providing opportunities for exploring and rooting in the OUTRUN has particular relevance for pigs’ behavioural needs and can improve pen hygiene by reducing the elimination area. Cooling facilities are increasingly important to prevent heat stress and its detrimental effects on welfare and pen hygiene. Finally, practicability for farmers needs to be ensured for all resources provided in OUTRUNs, as good management is crucial. Research gaps emerge regarding the association between soiling and NH3 and the influence of certain pen features (shape, roof, feeder location, pen partitions and wet areas) on pig behaviour and soiling.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether abattoir pens can provide a Salmonella enterica infection source during the 2 to 4 h of preharvest holding. Previous work has suggested that pigs may be getting infected, but little has been reported on the environmental contamination of abattoir holding pens. For 24 groups of pigs studied ( approximately 150 animals/group) at two high-capacity abattoirs, six pooled fecal samples (n, 10 per pool) were collected from each transport trailer immediately after pigs were unloaded. Holding pens were sampled (one drinking water sample and six pooled floor samples consisting of swabs, residual liquid, and feces) prior to entry of study pigs for the routine holding period ( approximately 2.5 h). After slaughter, cecal contents and ileocecal lymph nodes were collected, on the processing line, from 30 pigs in each studied group. All samples were cultured for the isolation and identification of S. enterica by primary enrichment in GN-Hajna and tetrathionate broths, secondary enrichment in Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth, and plating on brilliant green sulfa and xylose-lysine-tergitol-4 agars, followed by biochemical and serological identification. The study pens were highly contaminated with S. enterica; all holding pens sampled had at least one positive sample. Additionally, 33% (8 of 24) of drinking water samples were positive for S. enterica. All 24 groups of pigs had S. enterica-positive cecal contents and ileocecal lymph nodes, including those groups from transport trailers with no positive samples. From pigs, trailers, and pens, 586 isolates representing 36 different Salmonella serovars were isolated. Of the 353 isolates from pigs (109 from ileocecal lymph nodes plus 244 from cecal contents), 19% were identified as belonging to the same serovars as those isolated from the respective pens; 27% were identified as belonging to the same serovars as those isolated from the trailers. Sixteen percent of the unique serovars were isolated from both pigs and pens, suggesting that pens served as the infection source. This study demonstrates highly contaminated abattoir holding pens and watering sources. It also demonstrates that holding pens can serve as an infection source. This study identifies the abattoir holding pens as a significant hazard and a potential control point for Salmonella contamination in the preharvest pork production chain.  相似文献

This review assesses factors affecting fouling in conventional pens for slaughter pigs. Fouling of the pen happens when pigs change their excretory behaviour from occurring in the designated dunging area to the lying area. This can result in a lower hygiene, bad air quality, extra work for the farmer, disturbance of the pigs’ resting behaviour and an increase in agonistic interactions. A systematic search was conducted and results narrowed down to 21 articles. Four factors were found to affect fouling directly: insufficient space allowance, the flooring design of the pen, the thermal climate and pigs’ earlier experience. Further, these primary factors are affected by secondary factors such as the shape of the pen, the weight of the pigs and especially the heat balance of the pigs, which is affected by several tertiary factors including, for example, temperature, humidity and draught. Results indicate that the most important factor to control when trying to prevent fouling of a pen is the pen climate. An appropriate climate may be accomplished through floor cooling in the designated lying area, sprinklers above the designated dunging area and by ensuring a more optimal ambient temperature curve that also fits the weight of the pigs in different stages of the production. All in all, fouling of the pen in conventional slaughter pigs is a multifactorial problem, but it is important to focus on increasing the comfortability, and especially the climate, of the designated lying area.  相似文献

Isolation of virulent Yersinia enterocolitica from porcine tongues.   总被引:13,自引:2,他引:11       下载免费PDF全文
Thirty-one tongues from apparently normal, freshly slaughtered pigs were assayed for the presence of Yersinia enterocolitica by different enrichment and postenrichment techniques. Sixteen different isolates were recovered, including six of serotype O:8, four of serotype O:6,30, two of serotype O:3 phage type IXb, and one each of serotypes O:13,7, O:18, and O:46. One isolate was not typable. Cold enrichment in phosphate-buffered saline followed by treatment with dilute KOH or subsequent enrichment in modified Rappaport broth recovered 12 and 7 isolates, respectively. Four of the same isolates were recovered from the same tongues by both procedures. Cold enrichment without a selective postenrichment treatment recovered two isolates. Direct enrichment in modified Rappaport broth or modified selenite broth was ineffective in recovering yersiniae, as no isolates were obtained by either method. All of the serotype O:8 isolates were virulent to mice, causing the death of adults after oral challenge. This is the first report that associates Y. enterocolitica serotype O:8 with a natural reservoir.  相似文献

The provision of manipulable material to pigs is a legal requirement to ensure their good welfare. Loose straw is edible, chewable, investigable and manipulable, and has been proven to be effective in reducing abnormal behaviour. However, it is incompatible with slatted systems and therefore not a viable option for many intensive units. Thus, there is a need to identify enrichment materials that are as effective as loose straw and compatible with slatted floors. This study investigated the viability of using compressed straw blocks on a commercial farm in terms of cost and effectiveness in reducing biting relative to plastic hanging toys. A total of 880 slaughter pigs were used, among which half (n = 440, 8 groups) were provided with commercial pig toys (TOY) and the other half (n = 440, 8 groups) were provided compressed straw blocks (STRAW BLOCK). Animals were separated according to sex to investigate whether there was a higher propensity to tail and ear bite depending on sex. Pigs were monitored from weaning to slaughter, with tails being examined post scalding and any condemnations recorded at the abattoir. Throughout their life, the tails and ears of all pigs were examined individually, and behavioural observations of each pig group were conducted fortnightly. Salivary cortisol was also obtained from a subsample of pigs from each group every fortnight to monitor stress levels. The highest straw usage was recorded in the second weaner stage (39 to 67 days after weaning). Enrichment type or sex had no effect on tail lesion scores or cold carcass weight recorded at the abattoir. There was also no effect of enrichment type or sex on body, tail, or ear lesion scores during either the weaner (0 to 39 days after weaning) or finisher stage (67 to145 days after weaning). Female pigs showed more biting behaviour than males, and female pigs that were provided STRAW BLOCK performed better than those provided TOY. In both the weaner and finisher accommodation, more instances of interaction were recorded with TOY pens as enrichment than with STRAW BLOCK, but the interaction duration was not recorded. There was no effect of sex on either stage. More instances of aggression were observed with the TOY than with STRAW BLOCK in the weaner stage (P < 0.05). Enrichment type or sex had no effect on cortisol levels. Thus, relative to plastic hanging toys, compressed straw blocks provided in this manner did not benefit pig welfare.  相似文献

Environmental enrichment, adequate space and the ability to separate a living area into suitable functional areas are key elements for pig welfare. In this study, a two-level pen for nursery pigs was explored with the aim of analysing the use of space and the impact on pig behaviour, health and performance. Therefore, per batch, three experimental groups in pens with elevated platforms (two-level pens) and one control group in a standard pen were formed after weaning at the age of 4 weeks. Thereafter, groups were studied for a period of 6 weeks. In a total of eight batches (n = 882 pigs), the occurrence of skin lesions was determined per individual using a lesion score, and in seven batches (n = 761 pigs) individual daily weight gain was analysed. In five batches (n = 450 pigs), the individual use of space and the behaviour of pigs were investigated by direct observation (4 h per day on 2 days in weeks 1, 3 and 6 of the housing period, respectively). Results revealed that 98.9% of pigs (n = 445) were observed on the elevated platform at least once. The probability that an individual pig used the platform was significantly higher than 0.95 (P < 0.0001, confidence interval = 0.977, 1). The use of the platform was not affected by sex (odds ratio (OR) = 1.013, P = 0.937). However, the probability of observing an individual on the elevated platform increased with increasing BW during the experimental period (OR = 1.043, P < 0.0001). The presence of a platform decreased the probability of seeing a pig fighting (P = 0.014) and increased the probability of observing locomotor behaviour as opposed to lying (P < 0.0001). In two-level pens, pigs sustained fewer skin injuries than in standard pens (day 41: OR = 0.731, P < 0.0001). Over 41 days of experiment, pigs in two-level pens had higher daily weight gains than animals in standard pens (416 versus 393 g/day, P = 0.006). We conclude that usable space for nursery pigs can be effectively extended by introducing elevated platforms into the pigs’ pen. Furthermore, pigs may benefit from two-level systems by establishing spaces for activity as well as for retreat from other pen mates, thereby reducing aggressive behaviour and social stress. The installation of two-level pens is therefore encouraged, if they are intended to provide more space than legally stipulated.  相似文献

Pigs living in intensive husbandry systems may experience both acute and chronic stress through standard management procedures and limitations in their physical and social environment, which may have implications for their immune status. Here, the effect of a new breeding method where pigs were selected on their heritable influence on their pen mates'' growth, and environmental enrichment on the immune status of pigs was investigated. Hereto, 240 pigs with a relatively positive genetic effect on the growth of their pen mates (+SBV) and 240 pigs with a relatively negative genetic effect on the growth of their pen mates (−SBV) were housed in barren or straw-enriched pens from 4 to 23 weeks of age (n  =  80 pens in total). A blood sample was taken from the pigs before, three days after a 24 h regrouping test, and at week 22. In addition, effects of coping style, as assessed in a backtest, and gender were also investigated. Mainly, +SBV were found to have lower leukocyte, lymphocyte and haptoglobin concentrations than -SBV pigs. Enriched housed pigs had a lower neutrophil to lymphocyte (N:L) ratio and lower haptoglobin concentrations, but had higher antibody titers specific for Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin (KLH) than barren housed pigs. No interactions were found between SBV class and housing. Furthermore, pigs with a proactive coping style had higher alternative complement activity and, in the enriched pens, higher antibody titers specific for KLH than pigs with a reactive coping style. Lastly, females tended to have lower leukocyte, but higher haptoglobin concentrations than castrated males. Overall, these results suggest that +SBV pigs and enriched housed pigs were less affected by stress than -SBV and barren housed pigs, respectively. Moreover, immune activation might be differently organized in individuals with different coping styles and to a lesser extent in individuals of opposite genders.  相似文献

We tested usefulness of a target enrichment system SureSelect, a comprehensive viral nucleic acid detection method, for rapid identification of viral pathogens in feces samples of cattle, pigs and goats. This system enriches nucleic acids of target viruses in clinical/field samples by using a library of biotinylated RNAs with sequences complementary to the target viruses. The enriched nucleic acids are amplified by PCR and subjected to next generation sequencing to identify the target viruses. In many samples, SureSelect target enrichment method increased efficiencies for detection of the viruses listed in the biotinylated RNA library. Furthermore, this method enabled us to determine nearly full-length genome sequence of porcine parainfluenza virus 1 and greatly increased Breadth, a value indicating the ratio of the mapping consensus length in the reference genome, in pig samples. Our data showed usefulness of SureSelect target enrichment system for comprehensive analysis of genomic information of various viruses in field samples.  相似文献
