In this study we present the morphological characteristics of 54 Croatian national level track-and-field athletes. 21 anthropometric body measures were taken on a sample of 15 sprinters (S), 16 endurance sprinters (S4), 10 middle-distance runners (MD) and 13 long-distance runners (LD). Body fat percentage, body mass index and somatotype were also calculated. Canonical discriminative analysis showed significant difference between the athletes of various running events, in the measures of body volume and body fat, while no significant difference was found in the variables of longitudinal and transversal dimensions of the skeleton. ANOVA and Student t-test for independent samples showed statistically significantly higher thigh and lower leg circumference in sprinters, as well as greater upper arm skinfold in middle-distance runners. The mesomorphic component is a dominant characteristic of somatotype of the runners in all events, whereas the ectomorphic component is the least marked.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal form is the second stage of the Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) with a threshold dose of 8 Gy. It represents an absolutely lethal clinical-pathological unit, enteritis necro-hemorrhagica (duodenitis, jejunitis, ileitis, respectively) with unknown causal therapy. The purpose of our study has been to evaluate the morphological changes in a model of radiation-induced enteritis in rats and estimate the significance of changes in biodosimetry. Wistar rats were randomly divided into 21 groups, 10 animals per group. Samples of the jejunum were taken 24, 48, 72, and 96 h after the whole-body gamma-irradiation with the doses of 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 Gy, and routinely stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Five morphometric markers--intercryptal distance, enterocytal height on the top and base of villus, length of basal lamina of 10 enterocytes and enterocytal width--in irradiated rat jejunum were examined. The results were compared with sham-irradiated control group. After lethal doses of irradiation, all morphometric parameters of jejunum significantly changed. With the exception of intercryptal distance, they might be considered as suitable biodosimetric markers under these experimental conditions. Our morphometry results in radiation-induced jejunitis are in accordance with those in other studies. We were the first who quantified morphological post-irradiation changes in animal jejunum. Some of them might be used under experimental conditions. This experimental study is a predecessor of the clinical assessment of a specific marker. Under clinical practice, the sensitive biodosimetric parameter could serve as one of the guidance for evaluation of the absorbed dose in irradiated troops as well as rescue workers. In any sport, successful performance requires a planned approach to training and recovery. While sleep is recognized as an essential component of this approach, the amount and quality of sleep routinely obtained by elite athletes has not been systematically evaluated. Data were collected from 70 nationally ranked athletes from seven different sports. Athletes wore wrist activity monitors and completed self-report sleep/training diaries for 2 weeks during normal training. The athletes also recorded their fatigue level prior to each training session using a 7-point scale. On average, the athletes spent 08:18?±?01:12?h in bed, fell asleep at 23:06?±?01:12?h, woke at 6:48?±?01:30?h and obtained 06:30?±?01:24?h of sleep per night. There was a marked difference in the athletes’ sleep/wake behaviour on training days and rest days. Linear mixed model analyses revealed that on nights prior to training days, time spent in bed was significantly shorter (p?=?0.001), sleep onset and offset times were significantly earlier (p?<?0.001) and the amount of sleep obtained was significantly less (p?=?0.001), than on nights prior to rest days. Moreover, there was a significant effect of sleep duration on pre-training fatigue levels (p?≤?0.01). Specifically, shorter sleep durations were associated with higher levels of pre-training fatigue. Taken together, these findings suggest that the amount of sleep an elite athlete obtains is dictated by their training schedule. In particular, early morning starts reduce sleep duration and increase pre-training fatigue levels. When designing schedules, coaches should be aware of the implications of the timing of training sessions for sleep and fatigue. In cases where early morning starts are unavoidable, countermeasures for minimizing sleep loss – such as strategic napping during the day and correct sleep hygiene practices at night – should be considered.  相似文献

We consider a version of the Hawk-Dove game in which an animal knows its own fighting ability but not the ability of its opponent. For this game at evolutionary stability there is a critical level of ability such that animals with ability greater than the critical level play Hawk and animals with ability below the critical level play Dove. We define the level of fighting to be the probability of a Hawk-Hawk fight when two opponents meet. We show that even if an animal does not know the ability of its opponent, knowing its own ability results in a lower level of fighting at evolutionary stability than is found in the standard Hawk-Dove game in which there are no differences in ability or abilities are not known.  相似文献

Natural or synthetic anti-sense (as) polynucleotides complementary to distinct functional regions of mRNA (asRNA or asDNA) are able to inhibit the expression of any target gene. If certain viral mRNAs important for virus replication are targeted the inhibition of viral infection by asRNA or asDNA takes place. Inhibitory effects of complementary polynucleotides on gene activity in eukaryotic cells is due to the disturbance of translation of corresponding mRNAs as well as to the impairment of their splicing or transportation from the nuclei to cytoplasm. In prokaryotic cells, obviously, only the first factor is operating. The recombinant genes programming anti-viral asRNA can confer the resistance to the infection by other virus to the transformed cells. The resistance to viral infection observed in transgenic animals, expressing asRNA genes, may be considered as a new unnatural form of informational immunity.  相似文献

Agriculture in Scotland is facing immense challenges for the future. Scottish policy now promotes sustainable economic growth, which to many implies both a growth in resource use and the requirement to meet targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Attempts to increase economic gains can be in conflict with environmental aims and the question arises how both objectives can be met simultaneously.This paper examines the relationship between the technical and environmental efficiency of dairy farms in Scotland with respect to greenhouse gas emissions. It estimates the technical efficiency of a sample of dairy farms based on survey data, applying a number of approaches based on the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. The farms’ greenhouse gas emissions are calculated using a variety of sources and were used to estimate environmental efficiency. This paper finds that, within the study sample, farms which are more technically efficient, are bigger or have higher yields are also more efficient in their emissions of GHG emissions.These results suggest that the potential exists for, Scottish dairying to improve its competitiveness and lower greenhouse gas emissions by increasing efficiency, though the extent of the environmental benefits achieved largely depends on how efficiency is increased.  相似文献

Endurance performance is a complex phenotype subject to the influence of both environmental and genetic factors. Although the last decade has seen a variety of specific genetic factors proposed, many in metabolic pathways, each is likely to make a limited contribution to an ‘elite’ phenotype: it seems more likely that such status depends on the simultaneous presence of multiple such variants. The aim of the study was to investigate individually and in combination the association of common metabolic gene polymorphisms with endurance athlete status, the proportion of slow-twitch muscle fibers and maximal oxygen consumption. A total of 1,423 Russian athletes and 1,132 controls were genotyped for 15 gene polymorphisms, of which most were previously reported to be associated with athlete status or related intermediate phenotypes. Muscle fiber composition of m. vastus lateralis in 45 healthy men was determined by immunohistochemistry. Maximal oxygen consumption of 50 male rowers of national competitive standard was determined during an incremental test to exhaustion on a rowing ergometer. Ten ‘endurance alleles’ (NFATC4 Gly160, PPARA rs4253778 G, PPARD rs2016520 C, PPARGC1A Gly482, PPARGC1B 203Pro, PPP3R1 promoter 5I, TFAM 12Thr, UCP2 55Val, UCP3 rs1800849 T and VEGFA rs2010963 C) were first identified showing discrete associations with elite endurance athlete status. Next, to assess the combined impact of all 10 gene polymorphisms, all athletes were classified according to the number of ‘endurance’ alleles they possessed. The proportion of subjects with a high (≥9) number of ‘endurance’ alleles was greater in the best endurance athletes compared with controls (85.7 vs. 37.8%, P = 7.6 × 10?6). The number of ‘endurance’ alleles was shown to be positively correlated (r = 0.50; P = 4.0 × 10?4) with the proportion of fatigue-resistant slow-twitch fibers, and with maximal oxygen consumption (r = 0.46; P = 7.0 × 10?4). These data suggest that the likelihood of becoming an elite endurance athlete depends on the carriage of a high number of endurance-related alleles.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to identify differences in morphological variables and variables for quality assessment of volleyball techniques in young female volleyball players according to age and situation efficacy, and to estimate the effect of technique quality on situation efficacy. A set of 13 morphological measures and 6 technique elements were used in a sample of 246 female volleyball players divided into four age groups: 32 players aged 12-13, 147 players aged 14-15, 50 players aged 16-17, and 17 players aged 18-19. The quality of performance was assessed as a criterion variable. Analysis of variance showed the female volleyball players of various age groups to differ significantly according to the variables assessing the longitudinal skeleton dimensionality, and body mass and volume, as well as in all tests used on volleyball technique evaluation. Analysis of variance within particular age groups additionally clarified the process of modification in all study variables. Regression correlation analysis indicated the set of variables for the 6 evaluated techniques to be a rather good predictor of situation efficacy in all age groups, with service technique as the best predictor of performance quality in youngest players aged 12-13 and 14-15; spike and block techniques in players aged 16-17; and field defense technique in players aged 18-19.  相似文献

Container stacking rules are an important factor in container terminal efficiency. We build on prior research and use a discrete-event simulation model to evaluate the impact of a truck announcement system on the performance of online container stacking rules. The information that is contained in the announcement, i.e., the expected departure time for an import container, can be used to schedule pre-emptive remarshall moves. These moves can then be performed when the workload is low in order to decrease the export time and the crane workload at peak times.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the prematch and short-term postmatch neuromuscular responses to the intensity, number, and distribution of impacts associated with collisions during elite Rugby League match play. Twenty-two elite male Rugby League players were monitored during 8 regular season competition matches using portable global positioning system (GPS) technology. The intensity, number, and distribution of impact forces experienced by players during match play were recorded using integrated accelerometry. Peak rate of force development (PRFD), peak power (PP), and peak force (PF) were measured during a countermovement jump on a force plate 24 hours prematch, 30 minutes prematch, 30 minutes postmatch and then at 24-hour intervals for a period of 5 days postmatch. The change in the dependent variables at each sample collection time was compared with that at 24 hours prematch and 30-minute prematch measures. There were significant (p < 0.05) decreases in PRFD and PP up to 24 hours postmatch with PF significantly (p < 0.05) being decreased 30 minutes postmatch. Significant (p < 0.05) correlations were found between the total number of impacts and PRFD and PP 30 minutes postmatch. Impact zones 4 (7.1-8.0 G), 5 (>8.1-10.0 G), and 6 (>10.1 G) were significantly (p < 0.05) correlated to PRFD and PP 30 minutes postmatch with the number of zone 5 and 6 impacts significantly (p < 0.05) correlated to PRFD and PP 24 hours postmatch. Elite Rugby League match play resulted in significant neuromuscular fatigue and was highly dependent on the number of heavy collisions >7.1G. Results demonstrate that neuromuscular function is compromised for up to 48 hours postmatch indicating that at least 2 days of modified activity is required to achieve full neuromuscular recovery after elite Rugby League match play. Position-specific demands on energy systems and the influence of repeated blunt force trauma during collisions during elite Rugby League match play should be considered when planning postmatch recovery protocols and training activities to optimize subsequent performance.  相似文献

Studies on seedling morphology and the isozyme profile of 12species ofIpomoea , undertaken with a view to tracing the linkageand homology between the species, revealed the concordance ofmorphological findings with biochemical analysis. The aim of the study was to identify motor structures that determine high performance in karate. The study included a group of 85 karateka aged 18-29 years, competing as senior category athletes within the Croatian Karate Society. A battery of 22 motor tests (9 basic motoricity tests and 13 specific motoricity tests) were used. Factor analysis of the basic motor variables pointed to the existence of three significant factors: coordination, explosive strength and movement frequency; whereas factor analysis of the specific motoricity area indicated two significant factors, i.e., factor of technical efficiency and factor of specific agility. Canonical correlation analysis showed the isolated set of basic motor factors to significantly determine both technical efficiency and specific agility-mobility of the karateka, with a predominance of the explosive strength (force) factor, followed by the speed and coordination factors.  相似文献

The growth energetic efficiency (η) of two mycelial forms of Thielavia terrestris (pellets and diffused form) was studied by different methods. η Values determined by the pulse method are similar for the two forms, but the values determined by C balance for pellets were lower than those for diffused mycelium. These balance data prove that pellets yield more extracellular products than the diffused mycelium form, which is also confirmed by experimental data for different amounts of carbon in the culture fluid. Growth efficiency can be determined by various methods based on the principles of mass and energy balance. The estimates most frequently used are the biomass and substrate balances. However, growth efficiency determination according to oxygen balance (particularly by the pulse method) is simpler and more accurate; as it makes possible the immediate fixation of changes in the physiological condition of microorganisms and the determination of complex substrate utilization efficiency [1]. Earlier the possible use of this method for evaluating the growth efficiency of heterotrophic bacteria [2], hyphalic and yeast forms of microscopic fungi [3] was shown. The aim of the present study is the comparative investigation of the growth efficiency of two mycelial structures (hyphalic and pellets) by different methods as well as by pulse additions.  相似文献

Biofilm could be defined as a complex communities of microorganisms seen affixed to surfaces, they form clusters without sticking to any surface and buried firmly in an extracellular matrix (ECM). This matrix is formed by microorganisms in the formation of either extracellular polymeric substances (EPSS) or extracellular polymer. Many reviews have addressed the negative consequences of biofilm production in the food industry, among which we talk about biofilms being responsible for spoilage microorganisms and foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus etc. These contamination could be linked to biofilms presence in the processing plant. Although researches have tried conferring solutions to these challenges in the food industry, however, in this review we have tried to focus on the positive impact of biofilms formed in the food industry. It is critically expedient while trying to find the solution to the challenges of biofilm in the food industry to develop and give a major focus on the advantages and positive impact biofilm has in the food industry, which has been greatly neglected. Hence in this article, we have highlighted some positive impacts of biofilms formed in the food industry, like enhancing plant health and productivity of food products, as an agent of water and wastewater treatment in the food industry, as a tool in reducing the amount of excess sludge in the wastewater treatment plant. The development of edible biofilms, fermented food products and the production of biodegradable food packaging are also part of biofilms beneficial roles in the food industries.  相似文献

Microtubule-targeting agents (MTAs) constitute a diverse group of chemical compounds that bind to microtubules and affect their properties and function. Disruption of microtubules induces various cellular responses often leading to cell cycle arrest or cell death, the most common effect of MTAs. MTAs have found a plethora of practical applications in weed control, as fungicides and antiparasitics, and particularly in cancer treatment. Here we summarize the current knowledge of MTAs, the mechanisms of action and their role in cancer treatment. We further outline the potential use of MTAs in anti-metastatic therapy based on inhibition of cancer cell migration and invasiveness. The two main problems associated with cancer therapy by MTAs are high systemic toxicity and development of resistance. Toxic side effects of MTAs can be, at least partly, eliminated by conjugation of the drugs with various carriers. Moreover, some of the novel MTAs overcome the resistance mediated by both multidrug resistance transporters as well as overexpression of specific β-tubulin types. In anti-metastatic therapy, MTAs should be combined with other drugs to target all modes of cancer cell invasion.  相似文献
