In this study we have compared the structure of surnames of Slovenian and German (Carinthian) minorities of northeastern Italy with other municipalities of the neighbourhood. The analysis has been carried out by using estimates of the similarities between populations and the topological representation obtained by them, as well as the spatial autocorrelation. On the whole, this research shows some distinctions which depend on the territorial geography, especially in the mountainous area. Moreover, movements of individuals in the limited zones of the plain are evident, probably due to socioeconomic conditions, the moving of the people and their change of dwelling. Finally, it is probable that different Slovenian dialects generated characteristic structures of surnames which were well preserved in the most peripherical municipalities of the territory. 相似文献

Surnames are cultural markers of shared ancestry within human populations. The Y chromosome, like many surnames, is paternally inherited, so men sharing surnames might be expected to share similar Y chromosomes as a signature of coancestry. Such a relationship could be used to connect branches of family trees, to validate population genetic studies based on isonymy, and to predict surname from crime-scene samples in forensics. However, the link may be weak or absent due to multiple independent founders for many names, adoptions, name changes and nonpaternities, and mutation of Y haplotypes. Here, rather than focusing on a single name, we take a general approach by seeking evidence for a link in a sample of 150 randomly ascertained pairs of males who each share a British surname. We show that sharing a surname significantly elevates the probability of sharing a Y-chromosomal haplotype and that this probability increases as surname frequency decreases. Within our sample, we estimate that up to 24% of pairs share recent ancestry and that a large surname-based forensic database might contribute to the intelligence-led investigation of up to approximately 70 rapes and murders per year in the UK. This approach would be applicable to any society that uses patrilineal surnames of reasonable time-depth. 相似文献

Surnames are traditionally used in population genetics as "quasi-genetic" markers (i.e., analogs of genes) when studying the structure of the gene pool and the factors of its microevolution. In this study, spatial variation of Russian surnames was analyzed with the use of computer-based gene geography. Gene geography of surnames was demonstrated to be promising for population studies on the total Russian gene pool. Frequencies of surnames were studied in 64 sel'sovets (rural communities; a total of 33 thousand persons) of 52 raions (districts) of 22 oblasts (regions) of the European part of Russia. For each of 75 widespread surnames, an electronic map of its frequency was constructed. Summary maps of principal components were drawn based on all maps of individual surnames. The first 5 of 75 principal components accounted for half of the total variance, which indicates high resolving power of surnames. The map of the first principal component exhibits a trend directed from the northwestern to the eastern regions of the area studied. The trend of the second component was directed from the southwestern to the northern regions of the area studied, i.e., it was close to latitudinal. This trend almost coincided with the latitudinal trend of principal components for three sets of data (genetic, anthropological, and dermatoglyphical). Therefore, the latitudinal trend may be considered the main direction of variation of the Russian gene pool. The similarity between the main scenarios for the genetic and quasi-genetic markers demonstrates the effectiveness of the use of surnames for analysis of the Russian gene pool. In view of the dispute between R. Sokal and L.L. Cavalli-Sforza about the effects of false correlations, the maps of principal components of Russian surnames were constructed by two methods: through analysis of maps and through direct analysis of original data on the frequencies of surnames. An almost complete coincidence of these maps (correlation coefficient rho = 0.96) indicates that, taking into account the reliability of the data, the resultant maps of principal components have no errors of false correlations. 相似文献

The isonymy structure of 1.28 billion people registered in China's National Citizen Identity Information System was studied at the provincial, prefectural, and county administrative division levels. The isonymy was 0.026 for China as a whole. The average value of isonymy was 0.033 for the 30 provinces, 0.035 for the 334 prefectures, and 0.040 for the 2811 counties. The isonymy in China was much higher than in other countries. This finding may be partly explained by the low number of surnames in the Chinese language. Two regional features can be identified from the geographic distributions of isonymy. One feature is that the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River had the lowest values of isonymy at both the provincial and county levels. The second feature is that most counties with the highest values of isonymy were distributed in the provinces with high proportions of ethnic minorities. According to the dendrogram of surname distances, several clusters could be identified. Most provinces in a cluster were conterminous with one another. The one exception could be explained by demic migration called "braving the journey to the northeast of China." Isolation by distance could be detected because the correlation coefficients between Nei's distance and the geographic distances at the provincial, prefectural, and county levels were 0.64, 0.43, and 0.37, respectively. Human behaviors in Chinese history that may have caused these results have been discussed, including cultural origin, migration, residential patterns, and ethnic distribution. 相似文献

Cytopathology started in Slovenia in the early 50s with exfoliative cytology, while fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was introduced some 10 years later. Today cytopathology is a well accepted diagnostic method in Slovenia and there are currently 20 cytopathological laboratories and 17 cytopathologists. The number of specimens examined in 2001 was 26 230 FNABs, 13 355 exfoliative non cervical and 323 888 cervical smears. FNABs are performed by cytopathologists, by clinical doctors and by radiologists. So far only the cytopathologists have a supervised training period in performing biopsies. In future the same requirement will be obligatory for non pathologists. In four laboratories immunocytochemistry is used as an ancillary technique to morphology and one laboratory is using also flow cytometry for immunophenotyping of lymphomas. The classification system used in Slovenia for reporting the findings in cervical cytology is a combination of Papanicolaou's classification and assessment of dyskariosis. In spite of a long tradition in opportunistic screening for cervical cancer (Cca) an organised screening programme was started late. A four year pilot study, which included one third of the women population of Slovenia, was concluded in 2002 and an organised screening programme was introduced to the whole country in 2003. The incidence rate of Cca in Slovenia has been rising slowly since 1994 and it reached 19.6/100 000 in the year 2000. The mortality rate has remained roughly constant at 5-7/100 000 for the last 20 years. During the last few years quality assurance measures have been taken for improving the performance in cervical cytology. 相似文献

Ireland has one of the oldest systems of patrilineal hereditary surnames in the world. Using the paternal co-inheritance of
Y-chromosome DNA and Irish surnames, we examined the extent to which modern surname groups share a common male-line ancestor
and the general applicability of Y-chromosomes in uncovering surname origins and histories. DNA samples were collected from
1,125 men, bearing 43 different surnames, and each was genotyped for 17 Y-chromosome short tandem repeat (STR) loci. A highly
significant proportion of the observed Y-chromosome diversity was found between surnames demonstrating their demarcation of
real and recent patrilineal kinship. On average, a man has a 30-fold increased chance of sharing a 17 STR Y-chromosome haplotype
with another man of the same surname but the extent of congruence between the surname and haplotype varies widely between
surnames and we attributed this to differences in the number of early founders. Some surnames such as O’Sullivan and Ryan
have a single major ancestor, whereas others like Murphy and Kelly have numerous founders probably explaining their high frequency
today. Notwithstanding differences in their early origins, all surnames have been extensively affected by later male introgession.
None examined showed more than about half of current bearers still descended from one original founder indicating dynamic
and continuously evolving kinship groupings. Precisely because of this otherwise cryptic complexity there is a substantial
role for the Y-chromosome and a molecular genealogical approach to complement and expand existing sources. 相似文献

Data on grandparental surnames were obtained from school-children in 22 communes from Campobasso Province, Italy (Molise Region). The distribution of surnames was shown to be almost exactly linear by a log2-log2 transformation, which justified the fitting of the data to Fisher's logarithmic distribution. The values for v were higher among women. When v was standardized to minimize bias due to sample size, the value was one-third the estimate of migration from exogamy data. The higher values of v for females indicate that there is greater mobility of female marriage partners than males. 相似文献

The Aromuns represent a small and almost unknown people that live scattered over the Balkan Peninsula. Due to their language, that is very similar to classical Latin, they are in a special position. The Aromuns settled only in more recent times. Until now they lived as shepherds, as caravan guides and merchants and lead a semi-nomadic life. We are currently carrying out studies to determine the genetic structure of this population. To facilitate the interpretation of these data, we are also trying to obtain other important parameters that pertain to migration processes and the genealogical structure of this populations. The data arise from three areas in Albania, the Republic of Macedonia and Romania. The inbreeding coefficient and the proportion of repeated pairs of surnames was calculated through the use of genealogies and the isonymy method. The difference between these three populations are due primarily to confounding by selection of mates and family composition. 相似文献

Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are the main reservoir of rabies in Slovenia, whereas cases of rabies in other wildlife species occur sporadically. In 1995, a program of oral vaccination of wildlife in Slovenia was initiated; baits with oral vaccine were distributed by air at a density of 20 baits/km(2). During 1995, when the oral vaccination program was started, 1,089 cases of rabies (including both wild and domestic animals) were reported. Five years later (1999), only six positive animals were detected among 1,195 tested (0.5%). Despite an increase in bait density (25 baits/km(2)) during the years 2000 and 2001, reported rabies cases increased to 115 and 135, respectively. In 2003, following initiation of a new bait-dropping strategy, which incorporated perpendicular rather than parallel flight lines, the number of rabies cases decreased to eight. 相似文献

Genetic structure through surnames in Campobasso Province, Italy 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The population of Campobasso Province shows a level of inbreeding that is distinct from most Italian rural populations, regardless of their geographic location (Fr=0.0040; Fn=0.0102; Ft=0.0142). The genetic structure of the Italian-Greek communities of Lecce and Reggio Calabria Provinces does not appear to be affected by ethnicity. The level of inbreeding in Italian-Greeks of Reggio Calabria Province is similar to other Italians of Campobasso Province (Fr=0.0041; Fn=0.0127; Ft=0.0168). The Italian-Greeks of Lecce Province show random mating, and their inbreeding is in fact very low (Fr=0.0038; Fn=0.0024; Ft=0.0062). 相似文献

Hereditary surnames contain information about relatedness within populations. They have been used as crude indicators of population structure and migration events, and to subdivide samples for epidemiological purposes. In societies that use patrilineal surnames, a surname should correlate with a type of Y chromosome, provided certain assumptions are met. Recent studies involving Y-chromosomal haplotyping and surname analysis are promising and indicate that genealogists of the future could be turning to records written in DNA, as well as in paper archives, to solve their problems. 相似文献

The genetic pattern of the Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat (Y-STR) haplotypes of 542 unrelated males having the five most common surnames was analyzed to evaluate their usefulness for Korean forensic science and to provide the basic information for Korean genetic genealogy. We identified 439 Y-STR haplotypes, with 385 (87.7%) being found once. Each of the most common Korean surnames examined here showed high haplotype diversity (>0.9949), indicating that Y-STR haplotypes are very heterogeneous within each surname. Population genetic analysis showed that there are little genetic difference among five surnames due to the genetic heterogeneity within each surname and the various kinds of non surname-specific haplotypes (33.6%: 182/542) distributed among five surnames. Surname prediction may not be adequate for narrowing down the suspect list in Korean forensic science, and additional Y-STR haplotype data of thebon-gwans are needed. 相似文献

The paper deals with the distribution, paleogeography, age and biota of Triassic reefs in Slovenia. Most of these reefs have not been studied in detail up to now, but the paleographical distributional pattern can be outlined (Figs. 1 and 2). Triassic reefs are known from Central and Northern Slovenia, predominantly occurring at the margins of the “Slovenian trough” (which separates the northern Julian Platform and the southern Dinaric Platform) and at the margins of an intraplatform trough within the Julian platform. Reef growth started in the Ladinian and Cordevolian and continued (with interruptions during the Upper Carnian ?) to the Norian and Rhaetian. Anisian environments are characterized by the predominance of algal mats and dasycladacean algae. Cordevolian patch reefs as well as Norian and Rhaetian reefs were built during the Late Triassic by calcareous sponges and corals, which belong to different species (Tab. 1 and 2). Some smaller Cordevolian patch reefs may have been formed within deeper-water sediments. An interesting facies sequence is developed in the Norian Dachstein Limestone reef of Pokljuka (Julian Alps), starting with deeper-marine cherty limestones, which gradually succeeded by crinoidal limestones followed by reef limestones and lagoonal Dachstein Limestones. 相似文献

The study of names as cultural characters and of surnames, which behave like genetic markers, is useful for comparing cultural and genetic transmission. Genetic transmission has a unique vertical component, which also can be present in the transmission of cultural traits associated with a horizontal (or epidemic) component resulting from local customs or fashion. Our aims in this study are to infer genetic patterns in Sicily from surnames and names and to evaluate and compare the consequences of vertical versus horizontal transmission of cultural markers. Names and surnames of 88,383 consanguineous spouses collected in 16 dioceses of Sicily were analyzed by multivariate analysis to reveal and compare the geographic clusters obtained from both sets of data. As a result, both data sets indicate a major separation between the eastern and the western region of Sicily. Also, distance matrices obtained from names are highly correlated with those from surnames. But names seem to form fewer and larger geographic clusters, whereas surnames are more greatly subdivided into smaller clusters. The most common male names present a different pattern from surnames. Vertical transmission is the cause of the similarity of the main geographic patterns of names and surnames and their correspondence with findings from geography of genes, and horizontal cultural transmission explains the major differences. Furthermore, the genetic and cultural affinities can be correlated with the historical background of Sicily. 相似文献
