Dictyocha fibula was cultured in an enriched seawater medium from collections taken at Edmonds, Washington. The optimum temperature for growth is 10 C at salinity 24% and 160 ft-c illumination in Provasoli enriched seawater at the concentration of 7.5 ml/liter seawater. Average generation time is 49 hr. In addition to swimming cells with skeletons, swimming cells without skeletons and nonswimming coenocytes were observed in clonal cultures at 15 C.  相似文献

Eight conformers typical of diketopiperazine (DKP) ring folding were chosen for analysis. Conformational energy calculations were carried out using the semiempirical quantummechanical CNDO/2 method. The results obtained confirm considerable flexibility of the DKP skeleton. As the degree of folding increases, twisted boat conformations with the nonplanar peptide bonds tend to be more stable, while more rigid regular boat conformations with planar peptide bonds appear to be less stable than a flat one. The CNDO/2 method was found to be reliable enough for conformational studies of cyclic peptide skeletons with cis-peptide bonds.  相似文献

The structural hybridity of the chromosomes of Rhoeo spathacea (R. discolor) that produces a ring of 12 chromosomes at meiosis is probably maintained by a balanced lethal system active in the zygotic or embryonic stage. Bivalent-forming plants have been identified that belong to the taxon R. spathacea var. concolor. In the clone studied the arm arrangement in R. s. var. concolor is very nearly the same as the arm arrangement in one of the balanced translocation complexes of R. spathacea.  相似文献

Microboring or euendolithic microorganisms, which colonize and penetrate various carbonate substrates, are abundant in coral reef ecosystems and play a major role in reef carbonate dissolution. A few studies reported the presence of euendoliths in stylasterid coral skeletons but the biological identity, distribution and abundance of these microorganisms remain largely unknown. Observations of over 100 stylasterid colonies, collected in the Indo-Pacific area, revealed for the first time that the association between these corals and euendolith organisms appears to be quite common in shallow tropical waters. The most abundant euendolith was identified as a cryptic stage in the development of the rhodophyte Porphyra (Conchocelis stage). The euendoliths were observed in the skeletons of seven species of three genera (four Stylaster, two Distichopora and one Lepidotheca). The presence of euendoliths inside skeletons conferred a particular colour to the studied stylasterid corals. Distribution and abundance of microborings varied significantly among stylasterid species and among branches of a single colony and so did the colour of their skeletons. Colonization of skeletons and the associated colour distribution were almost uniform in some stylasterids, forming an upward gradually diminishing or sharply limited gradient. This study shows that patterns of euendolith colonization and growth in stylasterid skeletons may depend on the stage of the euendolith development as well as on their environmental requirements such as light exposure.  相似文献

The Harrier-Hawks Polyboroides spp. and Crane Hawk Geranospiza caerulescens have legs capable of flexing backward as well as forward at the intertarsal joint. This is evidently adaptive to their habit of extracting prey from crevices using the feet. The structure and properties of the intertarsal joint have been investigated using an alcoholic specimen of P. typus and skeletons of P. typus and G. caerulescens; specimens of Circus cayaneus (alcoholic) and C. aeruginosus (skeleton) were used for comparison. Increased mobility of the joint extends to medial-lateral swing as well as flexion; the faculty for backward flexion appears to be somewhat offset by some loss of forward flexion. The tibiotarsus, tarsometatarsus and the ligaments and menisci of the intertarsal joint are described and figured. No significant differences in musculature were found. The most obvious difference between Circus on the one hand, and Polyboroides and Geranospiza on the other is the extreme narrowness of the joint in the latter two genera. This is probably the most important factor permitting increased joint mobility. The possible significance of other structural features observed is also discussed, and related adaptations of the distal tarsometatarsus and foot are pointed out. It is concluded that the resemblances of the hind limbs of these two genera are not strong evidence of phylogenetic relationship.  相似文献

In a heterogeneous world, the optimal strategy for an individual is to continually change its phenotype to match the optimal type. However, in the real world, organisms do not behave in this fashion. One potential reason why is that phenotypic plasticity is costly. We measured production and maintenance costs of plasticity in the freshwater crustacean Daphnia pulex (Cladocera: Crustacea) in response to the presence of chemical signals from a predator, the insect Chaoborus americanus. We looked at three changes in juvenile body size and shape: body length, body depth, and tailspine length. Fitness costs were measured as changes in adult growth and fecundity, and summarized as the intrinsic rate of increase (r) for individuals reared in the presence or absence of Chaoborus extract. The cost of plasticity was measured as a multiple regression of mean clone fitness against trait and trait plasticity. We found scant evidence for either production or maintenance costs of plasticity. We also failed to find direct costs of these juvenile structures, which is surprising, as others have found such costs. We attribute the lack of measurable direct or plasticity costs to a decrease in metabolic rates in the presence of the Chaoborus extract. This decrease in metabolic rate may have compensated for any cost increases. We call for more extensive measures of the costs of plasticity, especially under natural conditions, and the incorporation of costs into evolutionary models.  相似文献

The aquatic weed hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata Royle) was discovered growing in the Potomac River, south of Alexandria, VA, in Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Washington, D.C., and in the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal near Seneca, MD. Cultures in Florida of the Kenilworth clone produced male flowers. This is the first report of the occurrence of the male in the U.S. Two distinct isoenzyme patterns have been identified for plants from various locations in the U.S., corresponding to a monoecious strain and a dioecious female. The occurrence of the wild colonies of the monoecious Hydrilla greatly increase the potential for physiological diversity through sexual reproduction, which may have serious consequences for the management of this weed.  相似文献

Effects of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and ozone (O3) on wood properties of two initially 7‐year‐old silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) clones were studied after a fumigation during three growing seasons. Forty trees, representing two fast‐growing clones (4 and 80), were exposed in open‐top chambers to the following treatments: outside control, chamber control, 2 × ambient [CO2], 2 × ambient [O3] and 2 × ambient [CO2]+2 × ambient [O3]. After the 3‐year exposure, the trees were felled and wood properties were analyzed. The treatments affected both stem wood structure and chemistry. Elevated [CO2] increased annual ring width, and concentrations of extractives and starch, and decreased concentrations of cellulose and gravimetric lignin. Elevated O3 decreased vessel percentage and increased cell wall percentage in clone 80. In vessel percentage, elevated CO2 ameliorated the O3‐induced decrease. In clone 4, elevated O3 decreased nitrogen concentration of wood. The two clones had different wood properties. In clone 4, the concentrations of extractives, starch, soluble sugars and nitrogen were greater than in clone 80, while in clone 80 the concentrations of cellulose and acid‐soluble lignin were higher. Clone 4 also had slightly longer fibres, greater vessel lumen diameter and vessel percentage than clone 80, while in clone 80 cell wall percentage was greater. Our results show that wood properties of young silver birch trees were altered under elevated CO2 in both clones, whereas the effects of O3 depended on clone.  相似文献

The turnover of chlorophyll a (chl a) was investigated in the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell and Hasle using a new method based on the incorporation of 14C into chl a. The alga was maintained in its exponential growth phase under continuous light; 14C was supplied as bicarbonate. The time course of label accumulation into the tetrapyrrole ring and the phytol side chain was determined for time periods equivalent to 1–2 cell doublings. The labeling kinetics of the tetrapyrrole ring and the phytol side chain were described satisfactorily by a simple precursor-pigment model with two free parameters, the precursor turnover rate and the pigment turnover rate, both having dimensions of time?1. The model was fit to the experimental data to determine the values of these two free parameters. The turnover rates of the tetrapyrrole ring and the phytol side chain were not significantly different, ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 per day. These rates are equivalent to turnover times ranging from days to weeks. Growth rate-normalized turnover rates did not vary with irradiance (7.5–825 μE · m?2· s?1). The precursor turnover rates of the tetrapyrrole ring and the phytol side chain differed by an order of magnitude. These results indicate that chl a is not degraded significantly in cultures of T. weissflogii grown under continuous light. Neither irradiance nor growth rate affected growth rate-normalized chlorophyll turnover rates. Our results are inconsistent with the hypothesis that steady-state cellular concentrations of chl a are maintained by a dynamic equilibrium between rates of synthesis and degradation.  相似文献

Fossil skeletons of Homo erectus and related specimens typically had heavy cranial and postcranial bones, and it has been hypothesised that these represent adaptations, or are responses, to various physical activities such as endurance running, heavy exertion, and/or aggressive behavior. According to the comparative biological data, however, skeletons that show a combination of disproportionally large diameters, extremely compact bone cortex, and very narrow medullary canals are associated with aquatic or semi-aquatic tetrapods that wade, and/or dive for sessile foods such as hard-shelled invertebrates in shallow waters. These so-called pachyosteosclerotic bones are less supple and more brittle than non-pachyosteosclerotic bones, and marine biologists agree that they function as hydrostatic ballast for buoyancy control. This paper discusses the possibility that heavy skeletons in archaic Homo might be associated with part-time collection of sessile foods in shallow waters.  相似文献

The feeding veil or pallium of the thecate heterotrophic dinoflagellate Protoperidinium spinulosum Schiller is a highly vesiculate membranous sac containing several arched, sometimes bifurcated microtubular ribbons. It originates from an internal microtubular basket, passes through a sphincter-like osmiophilic ring located inside the posterior flagellar pore, and emerges from the cell at that pore. The osmiophilic ring is part of an interconnected myonemal system (composed of two striated collars and several striated connectives) that is anchored to the pore plate and to two inward protrusions composed of minute sulcal plates. A related species, Protoperidinium punctulatum (Paulsen) Balech, also possesses a microtubular basket/osmiophilic ring complex. Elongate electron-dense bodies within the basket resemble digestive secretory granules found in other protists. Granular, electron-lucent microbodies clustered at the anterior end of the basket may also have a role in prey digestion. Dense membranous whorls observed within a P. spinulosum cell presented as it was preparing to initiate feeding indicate a condensed storage site for pallium membranes. A narrow microtubule-strengthened pseudopodal appendage found in two non-feeding cells constitutes the tow filament that serves as the initial linkage between the dinoflagellate and its food. The structures that constitute the pallium and pallium precursors, described here for the first time, are unlike those of other known protists, although some similarities with the dinoflagellate peduncle are evident. The existence of this unique system of organelles may have important ramifications in the search for evolutionary relationships among protists.  相似文献

Anastatica hierochuntica L. (Brassicaceae) is a desert monocarpic annual species characterized by a topochory/ombrohydrochory type of seed dispersal. The hygrochastic nature of the dry skeletons (dead individuals) permits controlling seed dispersal by rain events. The amount of dispersed seeds is proportional to the intensity of rainfall. When light showers occur, seeds are released and remain in the site. Seeds dispersed in the vicinity of the mother or source plant (primary type of seed dispersal) resulted in clumped pattern and complicated interrelationships among size-classes of the population. Following heavy rainfall, most seeds are released and transported into small patches and shallow depressions which collect runoff water. The dead A. hierochuntica skeletons demonstrate site-dependent size-class structure, spatial pattern and spatial interrelationships in different microhabitats. Four microhabitat types have been sampled: runnels, patches and simple and compound depressions in two sites (gravel and sand). Ripley's K-function was used to analyze the spatial pattern in populations of A. hierochuntica skeletons in the study microhabitats. Clumped patterns were observed in nearly all of the study microhabitats. Populations of A. hierochuntica in the sand site were more productive than in the gravel site and usually had more individuals in the larger size-classes. In the compound-depression microhabitat, the degree of clumping decreased from the core zone to the intermediate zone then shifted into overdispersed pattern in the outer zone. At the within size-class level, the clumped pattern dominated in small size classes but shifted into random and overdispersed patterns in the larger size classes. Aggregation between small and large size-classes was not well-defined but large individuals were found closer to the smaller individuals than to those of their own class. In relation to the phytomass and the size-class structure, the outer zone of the simple depression and the outer and intermediate zones of the compound depression microhabitats were the most productive sites.  相似文献

Summary Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413 contains two cryptic plasmids. Clones of the smaller (41 kb) plasmid, designated pRDS1, in cosmid vectors were used to construct a physical map. A clone bank of pRDS1 constructed by ligating fragments from aXhoII digest of a pRDS1 cosmid clone into a mobilizable plasmid was used to locate an origin of replication of pRDS1. Because we were unable to cureA. variabilis of pRDS1, the clone bank was transferred by conjugation to another strain ofAnabaena sp., strain M-131. A 5.3 kb fragment of pRDS1 contained all of the sequences necessary for replication inAnabaena sp. strain M-131 as judged by the ability to rescue the hybrid vector from exconjugants in unchanged form after many generations. Hybrid plasmids derived from pRDS1, one bearing genes for luciferase, were also transferred by conjugation toA. variabilis, where they appeared to recombine with pRDS1.  相似文献

A longstanding question in paleontology has been the influence of calcite and aragonite seas on the evolution of carbonate skeletons. An earlier study based on 21 taxa that evolved skeletons during the Ediacaran through Ordovician suggested that carbonate skeletal mineralogy is determined by seawater chemistry at the time skeletons first evolve in a clade. Here I test this hypothesis using an expanded dataset comprising 40 well‐defined animal taxa that evolved skeletons de novo in the last 600 Myr. Of the 37 taxa whose mineralogy is known with some confidence, 25 acquired mineralogies that matched seawater chemistry of the time, whereas only two taxa acquired non‐matching mineralogies. (Ten appeared during times when seawater chemistry is not well constrained.) The results suggest that calcite and aragonite seas do have a strong influence on carbonate skeletal mineralogy, however, this appears to be true only at the time mineralized skeletons first evolve. Few taxa switch mineralogies (from calcite to aragonite or vice versa) despite subsequent changes in seawater chemistry, and those that do switch do not appear to do so in response to changing aragonite–calcite seas. This suggests that there may be evolutionary constraints on skeletal mineralogy, and that although there may be increased costs associated with producing a mineralogy not favored by seawater, the costs of switching mineralogies are even greater.  相似文献

Diatom systematics depends almost entirely upon structure of the silica shell. It is not known to what extent the taxonomic species, as defined by shell structure, corresponds to the genetic species—i.e., to the reproductively isolated population. As an approach to this problem, we report here a comparison of enzymes by electrophoresis. We have examined the genetic constitution of a number of clones of (presumably) the same species for each of 2 closely related, centric diatom species: Thalassiosira pseudonana Hasle and Heimdal and T. fluviatilis Hustedt. The 4 clones of T. fluviatilis form a distinct group, clearly separated from all the T. pseudonana clones. Within T. pseudonana, 4 estuarine clones and one reef clone form a group that is distinctly different from 4 oceanic clones. A single clone of T. pseudonana from the Continental Slope waters is intermediate between these 2 groups and probably shares genes with both groups, indicating that the 2 T. pseudonana groups are not genetically isolated. We conclude that i) within groups, isolates are closely related even though they originated from different continents; and, ii) T. pseudonana is subdivided into ecological races.  相似文献

A series of new taxanes, 1 – 93 , have been isolated, together with 37 known taxoids including Taxol® (paclitaxel) and cephalomannine, from the Canadian yew, Taxus canadensis (Taxaceae) in the past 30 years. These new taxoids possess various skeletons containing 5/7/6, 6/10/6, 6/5/5/6, 6/8/6, and 6/12 ring systems and six new taxanes with four novel skeletons, i.e., a taxane with a 6/6/8/6 ring system, a taxane with a [3.3.3] propellane skeleton, three taxanes with [3.3.3] [3.4.5] dipropellane sytems, as well as a novel taxane with a unique 5/5/4/6/6/6 hexacyclic skeleton, containing a unique [3.3.2] propellane, were isolated for the first time from natural sources. It should be emphasized that 13‐acetyl‐9‐dihydrobaccatin III, a very useful starting material for the semisynthesis of Taxol® and Taxotere®, represents the most abundant taxane in the needles of this yew tree. These findings establish the above mentioned yew tree as significantly different from the remaining species. On the other hand, some chemical modifications on the taxanes isolated from this plant were carried out.  相似文献

大熊猫Ailuropoda melanoleuca(David)是我国特有的珍稀动物。关于它的骨学研究,前人的报道多限于头骨和四肢骨,对头骨以外的中轴骨--脊柱和胸廓--则很少涉及,仅Davis(1964)的著作中包括这部分骨学内容,但标本数量较少,且无幼体标本。我们用完整骨骼6例(包括1例幼体)进行了较系统的观察,并和黑熊Sele-narctos thibetanus的成体和幼体、小熊猫Ailurus fulgens、犬Canis familiaris、虎Panthera tigris、狮Panthera leo、云豹Neofelis nebulosa等其他食肉目兽类加以对比,以显示出大熊猫的特点。  相似文献

A solitary articulated skeleton of a middle-aged and diseased Panthera leo spelaea lioness from the Eemian interglacial has been found amongst numerous articulated skeletons of Palaeoloxodon antiquus forest elephants, in sediments from a small, shallow lake at Neumark-Nord in central Germany, which has Neanderthal settlements along its shoreline. Several pathologies such as a fibula fracture, arthritis in one of the front legs and a lost canine tooth with associated maxillary inflammation and dissolution made the lioness vulnerable to other predators such as hyenas, whose presence is indicated by their bones, coprolites and many scavenging marks on the elephant skeletons and on a femur from a male lion. The scavenging of hyenas and lions at this site is commonly documented by canine bite marks on the joints of elephant bones. Bite and scratch marks on the ventral vertebral columns and pelvises of two P. antiquus forest elephant skeletons suggest that the intestines and inner organs may have been consumed by large predators, as is commonly the case with modern African lions feeding on elephants. The weak and diseased lioness may possibly have been killed during antagonistic battles between hyenas and lions over their larger prey.  相似文献

Human Xeroderma pigmentosum “normal” fibroblasts AS16 (XP4 VI) were transformed after transfection with a recombinant v-myb clone. In this clone (pKXA 3457) derived from avian myeloblastosis virus (AMV), the expression of the oncogene sequences is driven by the AMV U-5 LTR promoter. The transformed cells (ASKXA), which have integrated a rearranged v-myb oncogene, grow in agar, are not tumorigenic in nude mice, and express a 45-kDa v-myb protein. The HMW DNA of these cells transform chicken embryo fibroblasts. The c-Ha-ras oncogene is overexpressed in the ASKXA cells but not in the parental “normal” AS16 cells and a revertant clone (ASKXA Cl 1.1 G). Our results lead to the conclusion that the XP fibroblasts are phenotipically transformed by the presence of the transfected v-myb oncogene, which is able to induce an overexpression of the c-Ha-ras gene.  相似文献
