Musculature innervated by the N. facialis inTheropithecus gelada (Rüppell) is patterned on broad lines in agreement with related genera of catarrhine monkeys, but presents some specializations and divergences in detail. Noteworthy is the extension to the labial margins superficially of the combined levator labii superioris and zygomaticus in the upper and the pars mandibularis of trachelo-platysma in the lower lip. A specialization of the medial fibres of levator labii superioris forms a sling-like structure within the upper lip and serves to implement the lip-flip gesture characteristic of the genus. Its antagonist is the orbicularis oris. In order to determine the suitability of thecyprinodont fish Aphanius dispar as a biologicalcontrol agent for mosquito larvae, the effects oftemperature, salinity, feeding rate and photoperiod onits reproductive condition were studied. The factorsexamined were the gonado-somatic index (GSI) and fourdistinct stages of cell maturation in the ovaries(oogonia, primary oocytes, secondary oocytes andmature ova). The fish were found to be tolerant to awide range of the examined factors. GSI's were notaffected by ambient temperatures over the range of18 °C to 37 °C. However, oocyte maturationstages increased as temperatures rose from 18 °Cto 27 °C, with mature ova first being found at thelatter temperature. No significant differences amongmaturation stages were found between27 °C–37 °C. At salinities ranging from of0 ppt to 56 ppt, no significant differences were found betweenmean GSI's, except for the two extremes of the testrange. The ovaries of fish kept in distilled watercontained primordial germ cells only. In feedingexperiments, significant differences were found onlybetween the ovaries (GSI's and oocyte maturationstages) of fish deprived of food and those fed at1% body weight per day. Regarding photoperiod,a decrease in day length from 14L:10D (the longest dayof the year) to 10L:14D (the shortest) caused adecrease in oocyte maturation stages. Fish at theintermediate level (12L:12D) still had ovariessuitable for spawning, whereas those at 10L:14D didnot. The results of this study show that limitinglevels for adequate reproductive condition were foundfor some of the factors investigated, however, rangesof the factors above these levels were relativelylarge. That Aphanius dispar's reproductivecondition may be controlled in an artificialenvironment is essential for it to be mass produced,and a prerequisite for its use in the biologicalcontrol of mosquito larvae.  相似文献

Abstract

Hypolophin ‘dasyatids’ are a common group of large stingrays today frequenting the Indo-Pacific inshores. Being often harvested in their restricted area, few are known about their biology and their evolutionary history despite a very peculiar dental pattern making it easy to track their fossil record. An abundant material consisting of isolated teeth from Late Bartonian (38–40 Ma) lagoonal deposits of Djebel el Kébar, Tunisia, allows to describe a new stingray, Pastinachus kebarensis nov. sp. This taxon represents the oldest occurrence for this genus but also the oldest fossil record for hypolophins. A dental comparison of these fossils with 3D rendered models of fresh specimens testifies that early hypolophin representatives had already a strongly arcuate and bulbous upper jaw, interlocking with a broad and elongated tooth plate on the lower jaw. This new fossil and its fossil relatives (here updated), indicate a pre-Bartonian origination for hypolophins in western Neotethys, and reveal a rapid and widespread colonization of the proto-Mediterranean Sea, western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific coasts during the late Paleogene–early Neogene. Finally, it is worth noting that early hypolophin representatives seemingly entered freshwater habitats occasionally as modern cowtail stingrays do.  相似文献

Climate change poses an unprecedented threat to biodiversity worldwide. Consequently, unrecognised taxa may not receive adequate conservation attention to survive. We used molecular and morphological data to address the challenge of species delimitation within the genus Schilbe. The presence or absence of an adipose fin and distribution based on east-flowing, conceivably faster-flowing, or west-flowing, probably more slow-flowing, river systems were considered. Distinctive geographic patterns in genetic variation within southern, eastern, and western African populations were revealed. Particularly, the South African population is distinct from those of Namibia, Botswana and Nigeria. No individuals with rudimentary adipose fins were found at any locality, but specimens from three localities either had or did not have adipose fins. These mixed occurrences are suspected to be a result of human interventions, and that the presence of rudimentary adipose fins in the east African species could be an adaptive feature that serves to stabilise these fish in faster currents. In addition, the genetic divergence observed among African silver catfish from geographically isolated river systems is conceivably the result of micro-evolutionary adaptive responses to different environmental conditions. Collectively, these results distinguish S. depressirostris from S. intermedius.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to estimate home range areas and distance of movement away from a squaretail coralgrouper (Plectropomus areolatus) spawning aggregation site located within a small-scale 1.5 km2 Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Pohnpei, Micronesia. Fifteen P. areolatus were acoustically tagged and re-located within a ca. 50 km2 search area over a 4-month period that included reproductive and non-reproductive months. All relocated fish were found in areas of moderate to high coral cover either on the fore reef or inside the lagoon in home ranges of 0.048 ± 0.018 km2 (μ ± S.E.). Variability in home range area (0.004–0.12 km2) and distance of movement from aggregation sites following spawning (0.02–23.0 km; 5.3 ± 3.6 km, μ ± S.E.) was observed, but did not appear to be sex specific. Five of the six relocated individuals were found within 0.02–6.1 km of the aggregation. This evidence and that from recent tag-recapture studies of epinephelids suggest that a substantial proportion of individual P. areolatus spawning populations reside within close proximity to their respective aggregation sites. Reproductive populations could be protected by MPAs of moderate scale (10 s of km2) that include aggregation sites, migratory corridors and adjacent home range habitats.  相似文献

Molecular variance was estimated in seven populations of the endemic species Scalesia affinis within and among islands of the Galapagos. The analysis, based on 157 polymorphic AFLP markers, revealed a high differentiation among populations, of which most was partitioned among islands. In addition, the information content of AFLP markers was tested with sets of discriminant analyses based on different numbers of AFLP markers. This indicated that the markers were highly informative in discriminating the populations. Although one of four populations from the island Isabela was sampled from a volcano 100 km away from the remaining populations, this population resembled the others on Isabela. The partitioning of molecular variance (AFLP) resulted in two unities, one consisting of populations from Isabela and one of populations from Santa Cruz and Floreana. The differentiation in two chloroplast microsatellites was higher than for AFLP markers and equally partitioned among populations within islands as among islands. Thus, gene flow via fruits within islands is as limited as among islands. The lower differentiation within islands in the nuclear AFLP markers may thus indicate that gene flow within islands is mostly accounted for by pollen transfer. S. affinis is the only species in the genus that is not listed in 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. However, due to prominent grazing and land exploitation, some populations have recently been reduced markedly, which was reflected in lower diversity. As inbreeding depression is present in the species, the rapid bottlenecks are threats to the populations.  相似文献

The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is one of the two known mammalian species that live in a eusocial population structure. Here we investigate the exceptionally long gestation period of 70 days observed in the mole-rat queen. The course of seven successful pregnancies in two individuals was recorded in a colony of captive naked mole-rats using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and 3D-ultrasonography. We establish a catalogue of basic reference ultrasound data for this species by describing the ultrasonographic appearance of reproductive organs, calculating growth curves to predict gestational age and defining ultrasonographic milestones to characterize pregnancy stages. Mean litter size was 10.9±2.7, of which 7.2±1.5 survived the weaning period. Mean interbirth interval was 128.8±63.0 days. The reproductive success in our colony did not differ from previously published data. In the queen the active corpora lutea had an anechoic, fluid filled centre. Using UBM, pregnancy could be detected 53 days before parturition. The period of embryonic development is assumed to last until 30 days before parturition. Embryonic resorptions were detected frequently in the queen, indicating that this might be an ordinary event in this species. We discuss the extraordinary long gestation period of this small rodent and postulate that the long gestation is beneficial to both the eusocial structure and longevity. An increased litter size, twice as large as for other rodents of similar size, seemingly compensates for the doubling of pregnancy length. We demonstrate that the lifetime reproductive effort of a naked mole-rat queen is equivalent to the mass of offspring that would be produced if all of the females of a colony would be reproducing.  相似文献

The emergence of mosquitoes that can avoid indoor-deployed interventions, such as treated bed nets and indoor residual spraying, threatens the mainstay of malaria control in Zambia. Furthermore, the requirement for high coverage of these tools poses operational challenges. Spatial repellents are being assessed to supplement these vector control tools, but limitations exist in the residual effect of the repellent and the need for external power or heat for diffusion of the volatiles. A semi-field evaluation of a novel controlled release spatial repellent device (CRD) was conducted in Macha, Zambia. These devices emanate metofluthrin with no need for external power. Devices were deployed in huts within the semi-field system (SFS). Female Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto released within the SFS were trapped overnight by light traps and collected by aspiration the next morning inside and outside of huts to determine the extent of mosquito repellency and the impact on host-seeking and survival. Experiments studied the impact of number of devices as well as the presence of hut occupants. The study was complemented with numerical methods based on computational fluid dynamics to simulate spatial distribution of metofluthrin. Presence of CRDs was associated with significant reductions in indoor counts of mosquitoes, regardless of whether huts were occupied or not. Repellency ranged from 15 to 60% compared to huts with no devices. Reducing the number of devices from 16 to 4 had little impact on repellency. When huts were occupied, indoor mosquito host-seeking was higher in the presence of CRDs, whilst survival was significantly reduced. This study demonstrated that deployment of as few as four CRDs within a hut was associated with reduced indoor mosquito densities. As would be expected, presence of occupants within huts, resulted in greater indoor catches (both with and without devices). The increased indoor mosquito host-seeking and mortality in huts when devices were present may be explained by the excito-repellency activity of metofluthrin. These semi-field experiments provide preliminary data on the utility of CRD spatial repellents to reduce indoor densities of An. gambiae mosquitoes. Studies will further investigate the impact of CRDs on mosquito behaviour as well as epidemiological protective efficacy.  相似文献

Allozyme electrophoresis was used to examine 12 enzymatic systems in two populations of the genus Neoplecostomus from the Paraná River basin. Samples of Neoplecostomus sp. 1 were collected in Paraitinguinha stream of the Tietê River basin, in the municipality of Salesópolis, São Paulo State, and those of Neoplecostomus sp. 2 from São Domingos stream of the Rio Grande River basin, in the municipality of Muzambinho, Minas Gerais State. The genetic variability of the two populations was estimated by Nei’s expected heterozygosity and was considered lower than average for populations of freshwater fish. The proportion of polymorphic loci was low (only 5.26% for the locus Idh). The low frequency of heterozygosity for both populations revealed a high fixation of alleles for each locus. Homozygote excess was observed in both populations. The values of Nei’s genetic identity and the presence of loci with different allele frequencies in both populations may imply that the two populations belong to different species. The genetic variability between populations was compared to other data for loricariids.  相似文献

Peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth) is cultivated for fruit and heart of palm, and is an important component of agroforestry systems in the Peruvian Amazon. In this study, AFLP was used to compare genetic diversity among domesticated populations along the Paranapura and Cuiparillo rivers, which are managed by indigenous and colonist farming communities, respectively. Gene diversity was 0.2629 for the populations in indigenous communities and 0.2534 in colonist communities. Genetic differentiation among populations (Gst) was 0.0377–0.0416 (P<0.01) among populations along both rivers. There was no relation between genetic differentiation and the geographical location of populations along the rivers. Since natural seed dispersal by birds and rodents is thought to occur only across relatively short distances (100–200 m), it is likely that exchange of material by farmers and commercial traders is responsible for most of the long-distance (over more than 20 km) gene flow among populations along the two rivers studied. This exchange of material may be important to counteract the effects of selection as well as genetic drift in small groups of trees in farmers fields, much as in a metapopulation, and may account for the weak genetic differentiation between the two rivers (Gst=0.0249, P<0.01). A comparison with samples from other landraces in Peru and Brazil showed the existence of an isolation-by-distance structure up to 3,000 km, consistent with gene flow on a regional scale, likely mediated by trade in the Amazon Basin. Several studies have shown that exposure of amphibians, including the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis), to potent estrogens at critical times during development results in feminization and/or demasculinization. However, genotyping of X. laevis has only recently become possible, so studies performed in the past were rarely able to make explicit linkages between genetic and phenotypic sex. Therefore, to further characterize this relationship, X. laevis tadpoles were exposed during development to 0.09, 0.84, or 8.81μg/L 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2), which is the estrogen analog commonly used in oral contraceptives. Exposure to all concentrations of EE2 tested resulted in significant delays in time to metamorphosis. Genotyping showed that genetic sex ratios were similar among treatments. However, morphological evaluation revealed that a significant number of individuals with a male genotype displayed mixed sex and abnormal phenotypes. Additionally, both genetic males and females exposed to EE2 exhibited greater presence of vitellogenin protein relative to the respective controls. Since estrogens function downstream of the initial molecular signals of sexual differentiation, it is likely that genetic male animals received mixed endogenous male and exogenous female signals that caused disordered sexual development. The production of vitellogenin was probably temporally separated and independent from primary effects on sexual differentiation, and might have contributed to delays in metamorphosis observed in individuals exposed to EE2.  相似文献

Pomphorhynchus laevis is believed on ecological evidence to exist as three strains in the British Isles. However, the strains have never been shown to be capable of being distinguished using morphological characters. A morphological comparison was made between a sample of P. laevis from Salmo trutta in L. Feeagh in the west of Ireland and a sample from Leuciscus cephalus in R. Culm in the south of England. The length and width of the trunk, neck, bulb, proboscis and hooks were measured. The number of hooks per row, the number of rows and the positions of the stoutest and longest hooks were also recorded. A Principal Components Analysis based on the morphological measurements confirmed the separation of the two populations and showed that two characters successfully identified the populations: the position of the stoutest hook and the ratio of numbers of anterior to posterior hooks.  相似文献

A gradual increase in the concentration of Ca2+ from anterior to the posterior region was observed when mono- and divalent cations were estimated in different segments of the epididymis in wall lizard. Na+ and K+ levels increased from anterior to middle segment but declined significantly in the posterior segment. However, no significant difference in the levels of Mg2+ was observed in various segments. To study the influence of mono- and divalent cations on sperm motility in vitro, the spermatozoa from posterior region of the epididymis were incubated in medium with varying concentrations of Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+. Spermatozoa were non-motile when suspended in Na+-free medium. Addition of NaCl induced the acquisition of sperm motility in a concentration-dependent manner. Further, amiloride, a Na+-influx blocker, markedly reduced the Na+-induced forward progressive motility. Unlike Na+, the presence of K+ or Ca2+ in the incubation medium reduced the motility of spermatozoa even at very low concentrations. The inhibitory effect of Ca2+ decreased when nifedipine, a Ca2+-influx blocker, was added to the medium. Mg2+ at high concentrations only was able to reduce the forward progressive motility.  相似文献

This article elaborates a relational historical geography of human, chimpanzee and elephant populations, working mainly from precolonial and early colonial (nineteenth and twentieth century) narratives by travellers to regions now corresponding to parts of Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal. It then compares a global ‘West African trade’ model of human and animal population’s spatial distribution with elements of an ‘East African settlement colony’ model drawn from other historical research. This perspective balances mainstream evolutionary approaches to animal biogeography with the human history, ecology and the geopolitics of their habitats. Taking such historical processes into account helps to unravel contrastive spatial and temporal dynamics of large mammal populations and to raise new questions about the anthropogenic causes of present-day population distributions.  相似文献

Muscular tissue collagen fibrils’ diameter and period of reared and wild snails (Cornu aspersum) were measured in order to investigate the role of nutrition on the collagen. Wild adult individuals were collected from Crete (Greece) and compared with adult individual snails reared under laboratory conditions fed a formulated diet. Transmission electron microscope and image analysis algorithms were used in the study. Statistically significant differences between the diameters of the collagen fibrils in the reared and the wild snails were found, and the D-period of the fibrils differed.  相似文献

The phylogeny and potential mode of speciation of the river limpet Ancylus fluviatilis (Basommatophora) was examined using mitochondrial DNA sequences from 16S ribosomal RNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and nuclear DNA from internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1) regions from 103 populations across Europe. Four highly divergent lineages were observed within Ancylus. Clade 1, representing the nominal taxon Ancylus fluviatilis (O.F. Müller, 1774), is mainly found in central and northern Europe, Clade 2 is present in a single Portuguese population, Clade 3 is distributed on the Canary islands, North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean region, whereas Clade 4 inhabits the Northern Mediterranean coasts. Phylogenetic analyses revealed an overall consistent topology of nuclear and mitochondrial gene trees. Based on a molecular clock, we estimated that the basic radiation occurred in the late Pliocene. Although clades differ significantly in size independent shell shape, morphological differentiation of lineages is not feasible without genetic data. Environmental data related to climate (precipitation, temperature, etc.) showed a significant differentiation of clades. Clade 1 dwells in relatively colder and more stable habitats than Clades 3 and 4, whose habitats in turn differ in a low or high amount of precipitation during spring and autumn, respectively. Based on the combined data sets on mitochondrial DNA, nuclear DNA, morphological and ecological differentiation, we conclude that Ancylus represents a cryptic species complex of reproductively and genetically isolated lineages. In addition, the joint analysis suggests that ecological speciation is probable to explain current patterns.  相似文献

Phormia regina (the black fly) is a common Holarctic blow fly species which serves as a primary indicator taxon to estimate minimal post mortem intervals. It is also a major research model in physiological and neurological studies on insect feeding. Previous studies have shown a sequence divergence of up to 4.3% in the mitochondrial COI gene between W European and N American P. regina populations. Here, we DNA barcoded P. regina specimens from six N American and 17 W European populations and confirmed a mean sequence divergence of ca. 4% between the populations of the two continents, while sequence divergence within each continent was a ten-fold lower. Comparable mean mtDNA sequence divergences were observed for COII (3.7%) and cyt b (5.3%), but mean divergence was lower for 16S (0.4–0.6%). Intercontinental divergence at nuclear DNA was very low (≤ 0.1% for both 28S and ITS2), and we did not detect any morphological differentiation between N American and W European specimens. Therefore, we consider the strong differentiation at COI, COII and cyt b as intraspecific mtDNA sequence divergence that should be taken into account when using P. regina in forensic casework or experimental research.  相似文献

The transition zone between forest and savanna is typically characterized by a dynamic patchwork of forest and savanna. We studied the woody plant species composition of 49 forest islands, 18 savanna, and 3 gallery forest plots in the Comoé National Park (Ivory Coast), West Africa's largest savanna reserve. TWINSPAN makes a clear distinction in vegetational composition between these three major habitat types but, nevertheless, more than 50% of the 292 species occur in at least 2 of them. The gallery forest is dominated by Cynometra megalophylla (Caesalpiniaceae), a genus known to dominate humid forests in other afrotropical regions. Ordination reveals four distinct categories of forest islands, (1) humid forests comparable to the gallery forest in their species composition, (2) dry disturbed and (3) dry undisturbed forests and (4) forests formerly inhabited by humans. Disturbed forests harbor more savanna species but also a distinct group of disturbance-tolerant forest species. Compared to other forest species, in this latter group we found an exceptionally high fraction of animal dispersed species (80% vs. 58%), while wind dispersed species or species lacking long distance seed dispersal mechanisms were correspondingly rare. This pattern occurs in spite of the fact that the frequency of wind dispersed species in general increases from dense humid forests to open dry forests and savanna. Species lacking long distance dispersal mechanisms are most abundant among those specialized on humid forests. These observations suggest that the species composition of forest islands is to some extent determined by the seed dispersal abilities of the different species.  相似文献
