Methods for large-scale rearing and handling of the tortricid,Bactra verutana Zeller, were developed for early-season augmentation of this insect to biologically control purple nutsedge,Cyperus rotundus L., and yellow nutsedge,C. esculentus L. A modified soybean flour-wheat germ larval diet, originally developed for the sugarcane borer,Diatraea saccharalis (L.), yielded pupae equal in weight to pupae from larvae reared on the standardBactra casein-wheat germ diet in an earlier test. An oviposition cage, constructed of 3.1-mm mesh hardware cloth in the form of a cylinder 17 cm high and 15 cm in diameter and wrapped with sheets of clear polyethylene, provided the rough-textured surface necessary for maximum oviposition. Although crowded, each female laid an average of 257 eggs, all on the polyethylene wrappers, which equaled or exceeded average producion in smooth-surfaced cages (168–204 / ♀). The sheets of eggs were placed in Erlenmeyer flasks from which the newly-hatched larvae were removed from the flasks by swirling 200 ml corn cob grits around in each flask. This procedure killed or injured 10 % of the larvae. With this techique an average 90, 500 living larvae were produced per day for field release over an 87-day period. When 22.5-ml cups of diet containing pupae were dumped in piles in screen cages or when the diet with pupae was removed from each cup and placed in a pile in the cages, only 40 % of the moths were recovered. The recovery rate was 75 % from cups nested in crossstacked 36-cell trays placed in cages. Collecting the moths for field release by aspirating 200 of them into 2-liter flasks had no effect on fecundity. With this method an average 2,675 adults were produced per day for field release over a 95-day period.  相似文献

A 2-year field investigation was carried out during 2003–2004 to determine the effectiveness of intercropping single and double rows of sorghum, soybean and sesame in a cotton crop on the suppression of purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.). Results revealed that all three intercrops were effective in inhibiting purple nutsedge density (70–96%) and dry matter production (71–97%) during both years of experimentation. Control in the second year was more effective than in the first year. The seed cotton yield was also depressed by the intercrops but its suppression (8–23%) was far less severe than that of purple nutsedge and its loss was compensated by greater total economic returns. Intercropping of sorghum and sesame produced greater than 20% net benefits (up to 60%) in comparison with the control (cotton alone). Soybean intercropping produced comparable net benefits (95–103%). Sesame two rows intercrop treatment appeared the most profitable with net benefit of 51–59% with good purple nutsedge control (73–92% density suppression, 77–95% dry weight suppression) during both years of experimentation.  相似文献

During 3 successive winters, we studied the dormancy sites ofPropylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.) andCoccinella septempunctata L., 2 species of ladybirds which hibernate in leaf litter. Samples of litter were taken from several kinds of forest to study the influence of 3 variables (exposure; altitude; sampling place: edge or inner wood) on the abundance of ladybirds. We found the ecological requirements of the 2 species of coccinellids to be quite different:C. septempunctata prefers forest edges orientated towards the South and the West.P. quatuordecimpunctata prefers the inner wood and does not show a preference for station exposure. For each species, the number of ladybirds collected in the samples is positively correlated with station altitude. In addition, some observations were carried out to examine the main mortality factors just before and during dormancy. In maize fields near dormancy sites, the harvest is very harmful forC. septempunctata. During the winter,P. quatuordecimpunctata andC. septempunctata suffer fromBeauveria ssp. and some ladybirds have parasitoïds.  相似文献

From measurements of viability after exposure of tubers to natural overwintering in the soil and 6 weeks exposure at 2 C, species cold tolerance of the tubers was ranked in decreasing order: yellow nutsedge `I' (Cyperus esculentus L.), an ecotype originating in Illinois; yellow nutsedge `G', an ecotype originating in Georgia; and purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.). The ratios of unsaturated-saturated fatty acids in tuber triglycerides, tuber polar lipids, and leaf polar lipids followed the same order as the cold tolerance rankings, with the most cold-hardy species having the highest ratios. Lipid content was less than 1% of dry weight in purple nutsedge tubers, but was from 5 to 7% in both yellow nutsedge tubers. Starch, sugar, and lipid contents increased significantly in the hardy yellow nutsedge `I' tubers during a 6-week exposure to 2 C, but did not change in the susceptible purple nutsedge tubers; only sugar increased in yellow nutsedge `G' tubers after this treatment. Protein content was not altered by the 2 C treatment in any of the tubers. Apparently, several factors involving starch, sugar, lipids, and fatty acids are related to the differences in tolerance to cold in these species.  相似文献

Meloidogyne incognita-infected and noninfected tubers of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) and purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) were treated with 56 L/ha 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) in microplots and subsequently examined for tuber and nematode viability in the greenhouse using a chile pepper (Capsicum annuum) bioassay system. The study was conducted three times. Nutsedge tuber viability and M. incognita harbored in both yellow and purple nutsedge tubers were unaffected by 1,3-D treatment. Nematode reproduction on nutsedges and associated chile pepper plants varied among years, possibly due to differing levels of tuber infection or soil temperature, but was not affected by fumigation. The presence of M. incognita resulted in greater yellow nutsedge tuber germination and reproduction. The efficacy of 1,3-D for management of M. incognita in chile pepper production is likely to be reduced when nutsedges are present in high numbers, reinforcing the importance of managing these weeds and nematodes simultaneously.  相似文献

Lydella thompsoni Hertin,Tachinidae, is an endoparasitoid frequently associated in southern France with larvae ofOstrinia nubilalis, Pyralidae, Sesamia nonagrioides, Noctuidae, Archanara geminipuncta andA. dissoluta, Noctuidae. The tachinid was reared successfully at 21°C in the laboratory by providing the adult flies with a high humidity, a light intensity of 8,000–10,000 lux for mating and a mixture of casein proteolysate and honey as food. Under such conditions, the flies lived for about 30 days and about half of them mated successfully. Hosts were infested by dissecting mature tachinid females and placing 1–2 of the extracted planidia onto each moth larva. Half of the planidia successfully entered their larval hosts. The biology of the tachinid larvae was studied on the 2 main hosts,O. nubilalis andS. nonagrioides. At 21°C, 25°C and 28°C, larval development took less time onO. nubilalis than onS. nonagrioides. At 25°C, female larvae onO. nubilalis required 9.0±0.5 days and onS. nonagrioides 10.5±0.3 days, male larvae onO. nubilalis required 8.3±0.5 days and onS. nonagrioides 10.6±0.3 days. Pupal duration was also influenced by the larval host. In winter, 2nd instar larvae ofL. thompsoni enter a resting or quiescent condition. This condition is terminated sooner (December–January) in larvae developing onS. nonagrioides than in those developing onO. nubilalis (February–March). The life cycle of the tachinid in the field was studied by trapping flies in water dishes and by collecting parasitized host larvae from various plants. Flies were caught from April to October, mainly in September. Larvae of the spring generation of the parasitoid developed on larvae of species ofArchanara that fed on the reed,Phragmites communis. From 1976 to 1982, parasitism averaged about 16%. Parasitism by summer generation onS. nonagrioides was highest (4–5%) in June. Parasitism ofO. nubilalis did not change by more than 2 fold in either of the 2 summers studied (10–17 % in 1981, 6–10 % in 1982). By September the numbers of host larvae had increased to 10–20 times the number available earlier in the season. Larval populations ofL. thompsoni similarly increased from 3–400 larvae per ha in June to 4–5,000 per ha in September. The stability of the relationship between this parasitoid and its hosts in southeastern France is discussed and compared to relationship described elsewhere.  相似文献

Ten different fungi recovered from diseased purple nutsedge and yellow nutsedge plants collected in several locations in Florida and southeastern United States were screened for pathogenicity to purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) plants. Only Dactylaria higginsii, recovered from diseased purple nutsedge plants collected in Gainesville, caused disease in greenhouse trials. Based on the results of pathogenicity and host-range tests conducted in a greenhouse, D. higginsii was determined to have potential as a bioherbicide agent for purple nutsedge. It was highly pathogenic to purple nutsedge, yellow nutsedge (C. esculentus), annual sedge (C. compressus), globe sedge (C. globulosus), rice flatsedge (C. iria), and green kyllinga (Kyllinga brevifolia [=Cyperus brevifolius]). Initial symptoms on inoculated plants consisted of moist, dark-brown leaf spots that appeared 4 days after inoculation. The spots later coalesced into larger lesions and blotches, killing the leaves and sometimes the entire aerial parts. The fungus sporulated on the infected leaves and caused secondary infections on the emerging leaves and shoots within 20 to 28 days after inoculation. Inoculation with conidial suspensions of D. higginsii resulted in significant reductions in shoot numbers (72%), shoot dry weight (73%), and tuber dry weight (67%) of greenhouse-grown purple nutsedge plants 45 days after inoculation. The fungus did not infect any of the crop plants or weedy grasses (Poaceae) tested.  相似文献

Apanteles sp.group ultor [Hym.: Braconidae] is the dominant and most widely distributed parasite ofEctomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller). The parasitization percent was increased from 10 % during April to 35 % at the end of the pomegranate fruiting season at October. Female parasite preferred to infest the host larvae at the age of, 2–3 days than 7 day old. The average number of host larvae parasitized by single female parasite was 58 under the rearing conditions of 27±2 °C., 55±10% RH and photoperiod of 16 h light per day. Parasites other thanA. spgroup ultor were:Bracon hebetor Say.,Ascogaster sp., andPhanerotoma sp. [Braconidae];Nemeritis canescens Grav. [Ichneumonidae];Brachymeria sp., andB. aegyptiaca Masi [Chalcididae]; and the secondary parasitePerilampus tristis Mayr [Perilampidae].  相似文献

The mermithid,Hexamermis albicans (Siebold) was recovered from larvae ofLymantria (Porthetria) dispar (L.) collected from various localities in Burgenland, Austria in 1974 and 1975 and from Würzburg, Germany, in 1974. It was recovered also fromStilpnotia salicis (L.) in Austria in 1974. The mermithid was recovered from all field collected larval instars. The majority of the nematodes emerged fromL. dispar larvae collected as second and third larval instars although some nematodes were recorded from larvae collected as first instar larvae still on the egg mass. Peak emergence occurred in the laboratory during the period June 11–17 of both years, but emergence continued at a much lesser degree through the end of larval development. The nematode was found in both high and low host density populations. In 3 localities studied both years, there was a general increase in the percentage parasitism the second year. However, except for one locality in Austria in 1975 where individual samples produced up to 11% parasitism, the overall parasitism increased from 0.4% in 1974 to only 2.5% in 1975.  相似文献

Glossina pallidipes Austen,G. brevipalpis Newstead andG. austeni Newstead were collected from 5 sites along the south Kenyan coast over a 2 year period. They were dissected and examined for nematodes. Three of the sites yielded tsetse parasitized by juvenile mermithids identified asHexamermis glossinae Poinar et al. Glossina pallidipes andG. brevipalpis are new host records for this parasite, whileG. austeni was captured infrequently and only at a site that failed to yield other parasitized tsetse. Parasite prevalence was low (0.16–0.61 %) and did not differ between male and female hosts. More tsetse than expected by chance harboured nematodes during the long rains season (April–August) than during the short rains (September–November) or dry season (December–March). Early juvenile stages (0.5–2.5 mm long) were recovered mainly from tsetse less than 50 days old, while late juvenile stages (35–85 mm long) were only found in flies older than 30 days. Late stages occurred singly while early ones usually occurred as two or more per host.  相似文献

The southern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita), yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) and purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) are important pests in crops grown in the southern US. Management of the individual pests rather than the pest complex is often unsuccessful due to mutually beneficial pest interactions. In an integrated pest management scheme using alfalfa to suppress nutsedges and M. incognita, we evaluated quadratic polynomial regression models for prediction of the number of M. incognita J2 in soil samples as a function of yellow and purple nutsedge plant counts, squares of nutsedge counts and the cross-product between nutsedge counts . In May 2005, purple nutsedge plant count was a significant predictor of M. incognita count. In July and September 2005, counts of both nutsedges and the cross-product were significant predictors. In 2006, the second year of the alfalfa rotation, counts of all three species were reduced. As a likely consequence, the predictive relationship between nutsedges and M. incognita was not significant for May and July. In September 2006, purple nutsedge was a significant predictor of M. incognita. These results lead us to conclude that nutsedge plant counts in a field infested with the M. incognita-nutsedge pest complex can be used as a visual predictor of M. incognita J2 populations, unless the numbers of nutsedge plants and M. incognita are all very low.  相似文献

The identification and efficiency of arthropod predator and parasites related to natural control of cotton leafworm eggs,Alabama argillacea (Huebner), were studied in a cotton field, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. Plants were marked randomly and the eggs found on them were indicated by arrow tapes for predation and parasitism observations. To evaluate and identify the arthropod fauna in the row-meter containing the marked plant, visual countings and collections using D-Vac ® and “beat sheet” were used. The average predation rate during the season, in the presence of 23.0 predators per row-meter, was 50.6% and the parasitism byTrichogrammatoidea annulata was 44.9% totaling 95.5% of egg reduction. In decreasing order of abundance, the arthropod predators found were the antPheidole sp., the spiderChrysso clementinae Petrunkevitch, the hemipteraOrius insidiosus Say andCeratocapsus mariliensis Carvalho & Fontes, and the coccinellidHyperaspis festiva (Mulsant).  相似文献

Chromolaena odorata L. is a major weed of tropical plantations and pasture lands.Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata Rego Barros [Lep.: Arctiidae] was mass-reared and released to control the weed on the Mariana Islands of Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan in the western Pacific. One year following establishment ofP. pseudoinsulata on Guam, the weed was reduced 100% at 3 of 4 sites monitored with fixed quadrats. Seed production was prevented if defoliation occurred prior to the beginning of the flowering season. If defoliation occurred shortly after flowering began, the developing seeds were eaten byP. pseudoinsulata or there was a significant reduction in weight and germination of seeds that matured. Eighteen months after establishing on Guam,P. pseudoinsulata had defoliated approximately 25,000 hectares of the weed. This is the 1st report on the quantitative impact of any control agent forC. odorata, and though the long term effect of the insect is still unknown, these results are encouraging.  相似文献

Among the major oil palm pest insects in the Côte d'Ivoire,Latoia viridissima Holland [Lepidoptera, Limacodidae] is the most frequently observed defoliator. During a pullulation of this species, a natural epizootic permitted us to demonstrate the occurrence of a small isometric RNA virus of 30nm in diameter. The buoyant density of the virus particles was 1.34. The virus capsid contained 2 major proteins with molecular weights of 30,000 (55%) and 31,000 (20%) and 3 minor proteins. One genome component was detected with molecular weight 2,9×106. Agarose gel diffusion tests showed this virus was distinct from any other described insect Picornavirus. Trials with different doses of viral suspensions were tested on industrial oil palm plantation, allocated byL. viridissima, from ground level, using an automatic air carried sprayer. One week after the treatment, a mortality gradient, increasing from 11 to 61% according to the dose applied, was obtained. Two weeks after the treatment the mortality reached 92% of the larvae in the treated parcels. During the next generation, the number of caterpillars on the same parcel was very low.  相似文献

Summary Somatic hybrid plants were produced by fusion of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) cv Leo and L. conimbricensis Willd. protoplasts. Birdsfoot trefoil etiolated hypocotyl protoplasts were inactivated with iodoacetate to inhibit cell division prior to fusion with L. conimbricensis suspension culture protoplasts. L. conimbricensis protoplasts divided to form callus which did not regenerate plants. Thus, plant regeneration from protoplast-derived callus was used to tentatively identify somatic hybrid cell lines. Plants regenerated from three cell lines exhibited additive combinations of parental isozymes of phosphoglucomutase, and L. conimbricensis-specific esterases indicating that they were somatic hybrids. The somatic chromosome number of one somatic hybrid was 36. The other somatic hybrid exhibited variable chromosome numbers ranging from 33 to 40. These observations approximate the expected combination of the birdsfoot trefoil (2n=4x=24) and L. conimbricensis (2n=2x=12) genomes. Somatic hybrid flowers were less yellow than birdsfoot trefoil flowers and had purple keel tips, a trait inherited from the white flowered L. conimbricensis. Somatic hybrids also had inflorescence structure that was intermediate to the parents. Fifteen somatic hybrid plants regenerated from the three callus lines were male sterile. Successul fertilization in backcrosses with birdsfoot trefoil pollen has not yet been obtained suggesting that the hybrids are also female sterile. This is the first example of somatic hybridization between these two sexually incompatible Lotus species.Formerly USDA-ARS, St. Paul, Minn, USA  相似文献

A survey of the parasitoids of the Asian corn borer,Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), in the Mariana Islands showed that few of the borers were parasitized. Parasitoids were reared from only 30 pupae out of more than 4 500 sampled. Three species of pupal parasitoids were found:Xanthopimpla punctata (F.),Brachymeria albotibialis (Ashmead) andTetrastichus? inferens Yoshimoto. No parasitoids were reared from mature larvae. The only egg parasitoid observed wasTrichogramma chilonis Ishii. During the month prior to the sweet corn harvest, which was the peak period of moth oviposition, about 40% of the egg masses had at least one egg parasitized. An average of about 35% of the eggs within a mass were parasitized.  相似文献

Comparative proteomic analyses were performed to detail the evolutionary consequences of strong directional selection for enhanced fiber traits in modern upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Using two complementary proteomic approaches, 2-DE and iTRAQ LC–MS/MS, fiber proteomes were examined for four representative stages of fiber development. Approximately 1,000 protein features were characterized using each strategy, collectively resulting in the identification and functional categorization of 1,223 proteins. Unequal contributions of homoeologous proteins were detected for over a third of the fiber proteome, but overall expression was balanced with respect to the genome-of-origin in the allopolyploid G. hirsutum. About 30 % of the proteins were differentially expressed during fiber development within wild and domesticated cotton. Notably, domestication was accompanied by a doubling of protein developmental dynamics for the period between 10 and 20 days following pollination. Expression levels of 240 iTRAQ proteins and 293 2-DE spots were altered by domestication, collectively representing multiple cellular and metabolic processes, including metabolism, energy, protein synthesis and destination, defense and stress response. Analyses of homoeolog-specific expression indicate that duplicated gene products in cotton fibers can be differently regulated in response to selection. These results demonstrate the power of proteomics for the analysis of crop domestication and phenotypic evolution.  相似文献
