Concerns about declining populations of terrestrial orchids make it important to identify the environmental factors crucial to seedling recruitment. This study shows that seedlings of Tipularia discolor (cranefly orchid) primarily occur on decomposing wood. Extensive searches of decomposing logs and stumps in mature and successional forests revealed seedlings at 24 sites, of which 15 could be identified as originating from seven different deciduous trees and one conifer. Seeds were planted in natural habitats to test the hypothesis that germination requires decomposing wood. In one experiment, seeds were placed into soil at sites where adult plants were abundant; no germination resulted. In a second experiment, germination of seeds sown in ambient soil was compared with sowings in plots amended with decomposing wood collected from a stump where spontaneous seedlings grew. Germination was much more frequent in plots amended with decomposing wood. We conclude that germination of T. discolor is stimulated in substrates that contain decomposing wood; judging from the occurrence of spontaneous seedlings, wood from at variety of tree species offer a suitable substrate.  相似文献

Pepper (Capsicum annuum) seeds were sown in nutrient-poor sand or nutrient-rich peat/vermiculite amended or not amended with Glomus macrocarpum. The vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) seedlings were irrigated with three levels of nutrient solution, and transplanted into four levels of P-amended soil, each of which was irrigated with two levels of nutrient solution minus P. Mycorrhizal seedlings in sand were responsive to increasing nutrient levels; in nutrient-rich peat the seedlings did not respond to additional fertilisation. The greatest seedling development accompanied by good fungus colonisation was in nutrient-poor medium irrigated with the highest nutrient solution tested (18 mM N, 1.2 mM P, and 7 mM K). Non-VAM plants almost ceased growing between the weeks 4 and 5, whereas VAM plants increased in weight by 41–188%. After transplanting, sand-grown seedlings benefited from VAM when 300 mg P/kg or more was added to the soil but peat-grown plants did not. Fruit development was delayed in all non-VAM plants compared with VAM ones.  相似文献

Red pines (Pinus resinosa Ait.) were grown in a pasteurized sandy loam either unamended with phosphate or fertilized with one of two levels of phosphate (34 or 136 mg/kg) as superphosphate, and with and without addition of Hebeloma arenosa inoculum. Shoot and total dry weights of mycorrhizal seedlings grown in soil unamended with P were greater than those for nonmycorrhizal seedlings grown in the same soil, but less than the dry weights of seedlings grown in soil amended with middle to high levels of P. Mycorrhizal infection was inhibited at the highest level of P amendment. 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of intact mycorrhizal roots showed the presence of two dominant peaks, orthophosphate (Pi) and polyphosphate (polyP). The polyP peak was absent in spectra of nonmycorrhizal roots. The ratio for areas under the two peaks, Pi/polyP, was 1.8 for mycorrhizal roots grown in both unamended soil and soil that had received middle levels of superphosphate. Apparently, the fungus strongly mediates the supply of phosphate to the tree through the production of polyP, even at growth-limiting levels of soil P, and regulates compartmentalization of P in the mycorrhizal roots.  相似文献

The effect of iprodione on the seed-borne phase of Alternaria brassicicola   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Alternaria brassicicola infection of Brassica oleracea seeds was effectively controlled by a dust application of iprodione (Rovral 50% w.P.). At 2.5 g a.i./kg the seed-borne fungus was usually eliminated from samples with up to 61.5% affected seeds (35.5% internally diseased) but higher levels of infection required increased doses for complete eradication of the fungus. The germination of healthy seeds, including samples from 7–yr-old stocks, on filter paper was unaffected by the treatment. However, the germination of diseased samples, particularly those internally infected with A. brassicicola, was improved. More seedlings emerged from iprodione treated than from untreated seeds in glasshouse soil but the differences were not significant. The application of gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane to iprodione treated seeds sown in soil did not adversely affect subsequent emergence or disease control. Disease control was maintained and germination was not affected by the treatment when treated infected seeds were stored for 2 yr at 10 °C, 50% r.h. In a field trial iprodione seed treatment reduced seedling infection in a cabbage crop grown from naturally diseased seeds (100% contaminated, 45.5% internally infected) from 5.6 to 0.04%.  相似文献

A rhizosphere fungus was isolated from roots of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) and identified as Fusarium spp. PPF1. A pot experiment was conducted to test its ability to promote the vegetative growth of Indian spinach seedlings (Basella alba). Indian spinach seeds were sown in sterilised field soil amended with wheat grain inoculum of PPF1 at the rate of 0.5 and 1.0% w/w, and plants were grown for 21?days in a net house. Significantly, higher germination percentage and vigour index were observed due to application of PPF1 in the potting soil. Treatment with PPF1 also significantly increased shoot length, shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root length, root fresh weight, root dry weight, leaf area and leaf chlorophyll content of cucumber plants compared to non-treated control. The growth promotion rate increased with the increasing concentration of inoculum of PPF1 applied to the soil. The fungus was re-isolated from the roots of cucumber plants at higher frequencies, while a positive co-relation was found between the root colonisation ability and the plant growth enhancement by the isolate. These results suggest that growth promotion effect of Fusarium spp. PPF1 on Indian spinach (B. alba) are linked to root colonisation ability of the fungus.  相似文献

A rhizosphere fungus was isolated from roots of chilli plants and identified as Aspergillus spp. PPA1. The fungus was tested for its ability to promote the growth of cucumber plants in a pot experiment. Cucumber seeds were sown in sterilised field soil amended with wheat grain inoculum (WGI) of PPA 1 at the rate of 0.5, 1 and 1.5% w/w, and plants were grown for 21 days in a net house. The treatment with PPA1 significantly increased shoot length, shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root length, root fresh weight, root dry weight, plant length, leaf area and leaf chlorophyll content of cucumber plants compared to non-treated control. The growth promotion rate increased with the increasing concentration of inoculum of PPA1 applied to the soil. The fungus was re-isolated from the roots of cucumber plants at higher frequencies. These results suggest that Aspergillus spp. PPA1 is a root colonising plant-growth promoting fungus for cucumber.  相似文献

To take full advantage of biochar as a soil amendment, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of biochar addition on soil bacterial and fungal diversity and community composition. Incubation experiments with a forest soil (a red oxidized loam soil) with and without biochar amendment were conducted for 96 days. The culture-independent molecular method was utilized to analyze soil bacterial and fungal species after the incubation experiments. Results showed that bacteria and fungi responded differently to the biochar addition during the short-term soil incubation. Twenty four and 18 bacterial genara were observed in the biochar amended and unamended soils, respectively, whereas 11 and 8 fungal genera were observed in the biochar amended and unamended soils, respectively. Microbial taxa analysis indicated that the biochar amendment resulted in significant shifts in both bacterial and fungal taxa during the incubation period. The shift for bacteria occurred at the genus and phylum levels, while for fungi only at the genus level. Specific taxa, such as Actinobacteria of bacteria and Trichoderma and Paecilomyces of fungi, were enriched in the biochar amended soil. The results reveal a pronounced impact of biochar on soil microbial community composition and an enrichment of key bacterial and fungal taxa in the soil during the short time period.  相似文献

The effects of wood ash on the growth of Norway spruce seedlings and grasses, nitrogen and phosphorus leaching, and soil fauna were investigated at two levels of carbon availability in a greenhouse experiment simulating harvested boreal forest. While sucrose-C amendment reduced grass biomass regardless of wood ash by 88%, the shoot and root biomass of spruce seedlings increased by 38% and 370%, respectively. Despite the large variation in above-ground biomass, C addition did not alter the concentration of water extractable ammonium nitrogen in humus, but it counteracted the ash-induced increase in soil phosphate concentration. C addition reduced the proportion of bacterial-feeding nematodes in the nematode community. Wood ash reduced enchytraeid size, but their biomass was not affected. Carbon treatment was crucial for enchytraeids probably because amended pots were moister than controls. Small compensatory grass growth following harvest implied that soil fauna made little nitrogen available to plants in one growing season. The results support the hypothesis that C availability may be an important determinant of nutrient retention, and has the potential to control plant competition in intensively harvested forests.  相似文献

Effect of organic soil amendments on the incidence of stalk rot of maize   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Five organic materials, Calopogonium sp. leaves, rice straw, mixed wood saw dust of Terminalia sp. Triplochyton sp. and Kaya sp., fresh guinea grass and poultry manure were added to soil with a recent history of high stalk rot of maize caused by Macrophomina phaseolina and Fusarium moniliforme. The two stalk rot organisms reacted differently to the organic amendments. All the amendments produced significantly less Fusarium stalk rot disease than the unamended control. Amendment of soil with fresh Calopogonium leaves was almost ineffective in controlling the incidence of Macrophomina phaseolina. Organic amendment with poultry manure increased the disease casued by M. phaseolina. The other amendments appeared to be equally effective in checking the disease. Increased microbial population due to amendment may play some role in disease suppression.  相似文献

Summary A greenhouse study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ectomycorrhizae on loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) growing in a Piedmont soil. Pine seedlings were inoculated with one of four species of fungi (Scleroderma aurantium, Pisolithus tinctorius, Thelophora terrestris, andRhizopogon roseolus). The seedlings were grown in pots containing a Cecil sandy clay loam amended to create a gradient of extractable P ranging from 5.9 to 52.5 g/g. After ten months, all colonized seedlings were significantly larger than control seedlings. However, of the four fungi,Scleroderma aurantium mediated a far superior shoot growth response to increasing levels of soil P; the seedlings were significantly larger than those colonized by any other fungus and also had the largest root systems and greatest degree of mycorrhizal colonization.  相似文献

Soil contamination by hydrocarbons, especially by used lubricating oil, is a growing problem in developing countries, which poses a serious threat to the environment. Phytoremediation of these contaminated soils offers environmental friendly and a cost effective method for their remediation. Hibiscus cannabinus was studied for the remediation of soil contaminated with 2.5 and 1% used lubricating oil and treated with organic wastes [banana skin (BS), brewery spent grain (BSG) and spent mushroom compost (SMC)] for a period of 90 days under natural conditions. Loss of 86.4 and 91.8% used lubricating oil was recorded in soil contaminated with 2.5 and 1% oil and treated with organic wastes respectively at the end of 90 days. However, 52.5 and 58.9% oil loss was recorded in unamended soil contaminated with 2.5 and 1% oil, respectively. The plant did not accumulate hydrocarbon from the soil but shows appreciable accumulation of Fe and Zn in the root and stem of H. cannabinus at the end of the experiment. The first order kinetic rate of uptake of Fe and Zn in H. cannabinus was higher in organic wastes amendment treatments compared to the unamended treatments, which are extremely low. The results of this study suggest that H. cannabinus has a high potential for remediation of hydrocarbon and heavy metal contaminated soil.  相似文献

  1. In wetlands, hydrochory is one of the main mechanisms of seed dispersal and there is often synchrony between propagule production and the flood season. Different sources of disturbance can prevent seed dispersal to suitable sites, and if environmental conditions are not adequate for germination and seedling establishment, recruitment will be limited, affecting succession.
  2. We worked in a disturbed tropical freshwater swamp where the native grass Leersia hexandra has dominated open areas, creating a grass matrix that surrounds patches of swamp forest. Leersia grows vigorously, forming cushions of dry matter that cover the soil, forming a potential obstacle to seed dispersal. We asked whether the vegetative growth of this grass prevents the entry and dispersal of seeds of the tropical swamp tree Pachira aquatica, thwarting seed germination and seedling establishment, and arresting succession. We set up transects in the grass matrix in two zones: close to the river (R) and bordering the tree patches or fragments (F). We quantified tree seed and seedling presence, survival and growth in situ and experimentally introduced seeds and seedlings in the field and monitored seed germination and the survival and growth of their seedlings, as well as that of transplanted seedlings.
  3. There was a negative relationship between the number of seeds and established seedlings, and the distance to river or fragment (= −0.86, p < 0.001 for zone R; and = −0.77, p < 0.001 for zone F) and with the grass cushion (= −0.68, p = 0.005 for zone R; and = −0.66, p = 0.007 for zone F); the grass creating a barrier to dispersal. When seeds were sown after clearing the grass cushion, germination success was high, so this stage is not limited. The transplanted seedlings had better survival and a greater final height than the seedlings of the sown seeds. Grass cover had a negative effect on both types of seedlings. Seedling survival rates were inversely related to grass cover, showing that seedlings overgrown by grass had low survival rates. Flooding is a stress factor for seedlings and produced mortality, in addition to the effects of the grass.
  4. Together, the field survey and the experiment show that succession is being arrested in two ways: (1) by limiting seed dispersal because the grass cushion slows the dispersal and penetration of seeds into the vegetation; and (2) by limiting seedling establishment because the grass competes for space and light. Our results show that even where the grass is native, slower growing, seed-dependent species may struggle to compete and establish. If grass cover is increasing, these swamps are very vulnerable to a decrease in area because it is very difficult for them to regenerate naturally.

Summary Soil was collected from pots that had grown 1,3 or 6 soybean (Glycine max) or Siratro (Macroptillium atropurpureum) crops that had received organic residue returns from each crop.15N-labelled residues were added to half the pots in the experiment and the other half left unamended. Half of each group was then sown to Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) which was grown, under glasshouse conditions, for 12 weeks.Ten grams of organic matter residues were added to each pot (1.5 kg soil) and the pots subjected to two wetting and drying cycles. At the end of the second wet cycle, soil mineral N values ranged from 6 to 64 ppm in unamended soils and from 19 to 177 ppm in amended soils. These levels generally declined over a 12 week period both in the presence and absence of sown grass.Nitrogen uptake by the grass increased with the number of previous cycles and was higher in Siratro than soybean soils. Recovery of15N by plant growth from the incorporated soybean residues was little effected by previous crop history and averaged 15.4%. On the other hand, Siratro recoveries were 13.7, 42.4 and 55.5% from soils that had grown 1, 3 and 6 previous Siratro crops, respectively. The addition of organic residues stimulated the release of native organic N (positive priming effect) on all soils. These results show that the turnover rate of nitrogen from organic residues can be high and the net result of these additions depends on the nature of the organic residues and the soil system to which they are added. These data emphasise the need to consider the rate of nutrient turnover from organic sources rather than concentrate on the nature and size of the resident nutrient pools.  相似文献

A method is described by which seeds of terrestrial orchids are sown and retrieved in the field under almost natural conditions. For the first time it is possible to conduct a quantitative study of orchid germination in situ and observe seasonal growth and mortality of seedlings. The technique has also enabled us to investigate the relation between the site where the seeds are sown, the availability of an appropriate fungus to infect the seeds, and seedling establishment in the soil. Five local species were studied. Corallorhiza odontorhiza, Goodyera pubescens, and Galearis spectabilis all began to germinate in May–June, after 23-30 weeks in the soil. These species differed in their dependency on infection at germination time, but none of the seedlings developed beyond the point of rupturing the testa except when infected. Seeds of Liparis lilifolia and Tipularia discolor did not germinate within the first 12 months of the experiment. The implications and potential uses of this field sowing technique for further studies and for other kinds of minute seeds are discussed.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of ectomycorrhizal infection on growth and nutrient uptake, especially of P and K of dipterocarp seedlings.Hopea helferi (Dyer) Blanco andHopea odorata Roxb. seedlings were grown in a sandy loam soil given a basal dressing. Nutrient treatments were unamended soil (NIL), amended soil with the addition of P and K (F), amended soil without P but with K (-P), amended soil without K but with P (-K), amended soil without P or K addition (-PK). Seedlings grown in the amended soil treatments showed foliar symptoms suggestive of calcium deficiency. Ectomycorrhizal infection appeared to improve shoot Ca concentration and relieved the foliar symptoms. Ectomycorrhizal infection inH. odorata plants increased shoot P concentration and increased shoot and total dry weight to the same or greater extent than those of uninfected plants growing on P amended soil.H. helferi showed a positive response to ectomycorrhizal infection in shoot, root and total dry weight in all nutrient treatments but no response to the nutrient treatments themselves.  相似文献

In a field experiment drilled at two depths on three dates in autumn 1988, with or without methiocarb pellets broadcast on the soil surface immediately after drilling, 26% of seeds of winter wheat sown at c. 20 mm depth were killed by slugs compared with only 9% of seeds sown at c. 40 mm. The protection from slug damage provided by this additional 20 mm of depth was comparable with that provided by methiocarb pellets. The effects of seed depth and pellet application did not interact and were consistent on all drilling dates. Thus, fewest seeds and seedlings were killed where methiocarb pellets were broadcast on a seed-bed with seeds sown at 40 mm depth. Intermediate damage was recorded where seeds were sown at 40 mm depth without pellets, or where pellets were broadcast on seeds sown at 20 mm depth. Most seeds and seedlings were killed where seeds were sown at 20 mm depth without pellets. Sublethal damage to seedlings was not affected by sowing depth but was reduced where pellets were broadcast immediately after sowing.  相似文献

Wheat seedlings were grown in containers of perlite in a glasshouse, and spores of Idriella bolleyi were applied either to the seeds in alginate gel or to the perlite as aqueous suspensions. Growth and sporulation of the fungus on seeds and roots were assessed by plating methods and by retrieval of spores from water that drained from the plant containers. Idriella bolleyi sporulated heavily on seeds for up to 3 weeks when applied to them in alginate gel, andmost of the root system was infected from newly formed spores that were carried in percolating water. Removal of the inoculated seeds from seedlings at 7 days reduced the degree of root infection and temporarily reduced the number of spores in drainage water; however, spore numbers increased to control levels (seeds attached) by 21 days, indicating subsequent sporulation on the roots. When spores were applied to perlite containing young (0–3 days) seedlings I. bolleyi colonized the seeds, sporulated heavily on them and extensively colonized the roots. However, it established poorly on seeds and roots if added to the perlite when seedlings were 11 days or older. The results suggest that early growth on seeds is necessary for establishment of a high population of I. bolleyi, and that cycles of sporulation on seeds and then roots contribute to colonization of the rhizosphere. The features associated with the rhizosphere competence of I. bolleyi are compared with those for systemic colonization of the xylem by vascular wilt fungi, and suggest a new approach to the selection of root‐colonizing biocontrol agents.  相似文献

Apparently normal pea seeds from pods bearing lesions of Mycosphaerella pinodes were often internally infected with the fungus. When infected seeds were sown in sterile grit almost all the seedlings showed disease lesions, at or below soil level, 4–6 weeks after sowing. Seed infected with Ascochyta pisi gave only 40% infection of seedlings: these showed lesions on the stem and first two leaves within 4 weeks of sowing. Infection of seeds by both pathogens could be eradicated by soaking the seeds for 24 hr. in 0.2% suspensions of thiram or captan at 30d?C. In laboratory or greenhouse tests these treatments did not check germination, but in the field the captan treatment reduced emergence. The treated seeds became fully imbibed but could be dried and stored: the thiram treatment was used for semi-commercial treatment of quantities of seed up to 3 cwt.  相似文献

Summary Demographic characteristics associated with the maintenance and growth of populations, such as seed dynamics, seedling emergence, survival, and tiller dynamics were examined for two tussock grasses, the native Agropyron spicatum and the introduced Agropyron desertorum in a 30-month field study. The introduced grass was aerially sown onto a native grassland site. Seed production of the introduced grass was greater than the native grass in both above- and below-average precipitation years. Seeds of A. spicatum were dispersed when they mature, while A. desertorum retained some seeds in inflorescences, and dispersed them slowly throughout the year. This seed retention allowed some seeds of the introduced grass to escape peak periods of seed predation during the summer and allowed seeds to be deposited constantly into the seed bank. Carryover of seeds in the seed bank beyond one year occurred in the introduced grass but not in the native species. For both species, seedling emergence occurred in both autumn or spring. Survival rates for A. desertorum were higher than A. spicatum when seedlings emerged between November and March. Survival rates of cohorts emerging before November favored A. spicatum whereas survival rates did not differ between species for cohorts emerging after March. Individuals of both species emerging after April were unable to survive the summer drought. Demographic factors associated with seeds of A. desertorum seemed to favor the maintenance and spread of this introduced grass into native stands formerly dominated by A. spicatum.  相似文献

Although ecological flexibility has been well documented in fungi, it remains unclear how this flexibility can be exploited for pollutant degradation, especially in the Ascomycota phylum. In this work, we assess three mycostimulation amendments for their ability to induce degradation in Trichoderma harzanium, a model fungus previously isolated from a Superfund site contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The amendments used in the present study were selected based on the documented ecological roles of ascomycetes. Chitin was selected to simulate the parasitic ecological role while cellulose and wood were selected to mimic bulk soil and wood saprobic conditions, respectively. Each amendment was tested in liquid basal medium in 0.1 and 1% (w/v) suspensions. Both chitin and cellulose amendments were shown to promote anthracene degradation in T. harzanium with the 0.1% chitin amendment resulting in over 90% removal of anthracene. None of the targets monitored for gene expression were found to be upregulated suggesting alternate pathways may be used in T. harzanium. Overall, our data suggest that mycostimulation amendments can be improved by understanding the ecological roles of indigenous fungi. However, further research is needed to better estimate specific amendment requirements for a broader group of target fungi and follow up studies are needed to determine whether the trends observed herein translate to more realistic soil systems.  相似文献
