Cortisol concentrations were determined during the perinatal and weaning periods in alpacas. Fifty males and 50 females were chosen at random (25 at each period) for blood collection on day of parturition, 3 and 5 days after birth. For the weaning period, blood samples were collected 2 days before, on the day of weaning (0), and at days 3 and 5 after weaning. Cortisol was determined using an ELISA protocol validated for the alpaca. There was no difference (P>0.05) in cortisol concentrations in both periods, perinatal and weaning between male and female crias. Cortisol was elevated at day of parturition (125.8 ng/ml) and then decreased to 27.2 ng/ml at 3 days after birth (P<0.05). Conversely, cortisol was 32.5 ng/ml 2 days before weaning and then increased at day 3 to 64.7 ng/ml (P<0.05), but then decreased to 29.4 ng/ml at day 5 after weaning. Cortisol is elevated in new-born alpacas and then decreases at the third and fifth after birth. Concentrations of cortisol are also increased after weaning and then decreased 5 days after weaning.  相似文献

Donald A. D., Morley F. H. W., Waller P. J., Axelsen A., Dobson R. J. and Donnelly J. R. 1982. Effects of reproduction, genotype and anthelmintic treatment of ewes on Ostertagia spp. populations. International Journal for Parasitology12: 403–411. Merino and Border Leicester × Merino (BL × M) ewes, nearly all of the same age and reared at the same site, were either unmated or mated to Border Leicester rams. Ewes of each genotype and reproductive status were untreated or were given a single pre-lambing drench with thiabendazole at 50 or 100 mg/kg a week before the start of lambing in spring on pastures at Canberra which had been contaminated during autumn and winter by adult sheep. The two genotypes grazed together within each combination of reproductive status and anthelmintic treatment which grazed separately. Thiabendazole was highly effective in removing both fourth stage larvae and adults of Ostertagia spp., the most abundant genus. Eight weeks after the pre-lambing drench lactating ewes carried larger Ostertagia spp. populations than did unmated ewes of both genotypes, but as a result of reinfection after treatment, differences between drenched and undrenched ewes were not significant. At this time lactating as well as unmated ewes harboured large populations of arrested early fourth stage larvae of Ostertagia spp. acquired during the last 8 weeks, showing that arrest of development is not prevented by lactation. There was strong evidence that some ingested larvae which became arrested in lactating ewes were rejected by unmated ewes. At all stages of the reproductive cycle studied, BL × M ewes were substantially more resistant to Ostertagia spp. infection than Merinos. No persistent benefits in parasite control or in animal production were detected from the pre-lambing drench.  相似文献

Five ewes of each of four breed types (pure Merino and crosses with Dorset Horn, South Suffolk and Border Leicester) were kept on a 6-monthly light-cycle in each of two light controlled rooms in an attempt to breed them twice in one calendar year. Four and 17 days following parturition they were treated with gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) (75, 150, 300 μg) and the pattern of release of luteinising hormone (LH) was studied and compared with that obtained in ‘normal’ cyclic ewes. Weekly plasma prolactin levels were determined at weeks 1–5. Overall, mean and peak levels of LH in the post-partum ewes were only one half those of cyclic ewes. The mean level ran from 8.4 ng/ml at day 4 to 18.2 ng/ml at day 17. This compared with 25.3 ng/ml for cyclic ewes. There was a significant effect of breed type, Merino and Dorset Horn × ewes releasing more LH than did South Suffolk × and Border Leicester × ewes. There were no significant effects of breed or week of sampling on plasma prolactin.None of the observed differences in pattern of release of LH could be related to the observed breed-type differences in fertility and it appears that factors other than endocrinological - e.g. uterine involution - may be involved in the ability to conceive of ewes in which oestrus and ovulation have been induced shortly after parturition.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted during the anoestrous period in Border Leicester x Merino ewes with ovarian autotransplants to study the effects of a single injection of 20 mg progesterone on follicular steroid secretion. The aim of these experiments was to determine whether pretreatment with a 20 mg intramuscular injection of progesterone could reduce GnRH-induced ovarian steroid secretion in anoestrous ewes. In both experiments, an injection of 150 ng GnRH induced an LH pulse in all ewes with a maximum concentration 10 min (the first post-injection sample) after injection. Oestradiol and androstenedione secretion increased progressively after the GnRH-induced LH pulse and reached maximum rates of secretion between 60 and 90 min before decreasing slowly to pre-injection rates at 150 min. There were no differences in the pattern of secretion of oestradiol (measured in both experiments) or androstenedione (measured only in Expt 2). In Expt 1, the injection of progesterone 72 h before the challenge with GnRH had no effect on the maximum rate of oestradiol secretion from the autotransplanted ovary. However, in Expt 2, when progesterone was given either 36 or 60 h before GnRH, there was a significant suppression in the maximum rate of secretion of both oestradiol and androstenedione between 60 and 90 min after GnRH injection. These data show that pretreatment of anoestrous sheep with progesterone can suppress LH-stimulated steroid secretion from the ovary and indicate that progesterone may have a direct effect on oestrogenic follicles in sheep.  相似文献

The number of Border Leicester ewes ovulating and their ovulation rate at 4 to 6 week intervals over 1 year and again after a further year were determined. The proportion of these ewes expressing estrus from autumn to spring and then in late summer/autumn was also determined. None of the ewes ovulated from October to early February, but for the remainder of the year, ovulation rate was always above 1.60, peaking in April to June at over 2.0. Eighty-four percent of the ewes had commenced ovulating by early March. The breeding season continued to September, when 10% of the ewes ovulated, with 25% expressing estrus in August and September. There was no significant effect of age, ewe liveweight or liveweight change on the proportion of ewes ovulating and their ovulation rate. The variability in the length of the breeding season gives scope for further selection.  相似文献

Background

Genomic predictions can be applied early in life without impacting selection candidates. This is especially useful for meat quality traits in sheep. Carcass and novel meat quality traits were predicted in a multi-breed sheep population that included Merino, Border Leicester, Polled Dorset and White Suffolk sheep and their crosses.

Methods

Prediction of breeding values by best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) based on pedigree information was compared to prediction based on genomic BLUP (GBLUP) and a Bayesian prediction method (BayesR). Cross-validation of predictions across sire families was used to evaluate the accuracy of predictions based on the correlation of predicted and observed values and the regression of observed on predicted values was used to evaluate bias of methods. Accuracies and regression coefficients were calculated using either phenotypes or adjusted phenotypes as observed variables.

Results and conclusions

Genomic methods increased the accuracy of predicted breeding values to on average 0.2 across traits (range 0.07 to 0.31), compared to an average accuracy of 0.09 for pedigree-based BLUP. However, for some traits with smaller reference population size, there was no increase in accuracy or it was small. No clear differences in accuracy were observed between GBLUP and BayesR. The regression of phenotypes on breeding values was close to 1 for all methods, indicating little bias, except for GBLUP and adjusted phenotypes (regression = 0.78). Accuracies calculated with adjusted (for fixed effects) phenotypes were less variable than accuracies based on unadjusted phenotypes, indicating that fixed effects influence the latter. Increasing the reference population size increased accuracy, indicating that adding more records will be beneficial. For the Merino, Polled Dorset and White Suffolk breeds, accuracies were greater than for the Border Leicester breed due to the smaller sample size and limited across-breed prediction. BayesR detected only a few large marker effects but one region on chromosome 6 was associated with large effects for several traits. Cross-validation produced very similar variability of accuracy and regression coefficients for BLUP, GBLUP and BayesR, showing that this variability is not a property of genomic methods alone. Our results show that genomic selection for novel difficult-to-measure traits is a feasible strategy to achieve increased genetic gain.  相似文献

Changes in spatial relationships between mother and calf right whales (Eubalaena australis) from birth to the separation of yearling calves from their mothers were observed. During the first few weeks of a calf's life, mother and calf were within close proximity over 90% of the time, and mothers were responsible for maintenance of contact with their infants. Later calves strayed farther and initiated many more leaves and approaches than their quiescent mothers. The mothers still maintained contact with their infants. Just before migration away from the area, pair members resumed close proximity and leaves and approaches by both diminished. Yearling calves, returning to the area with their mothers after six months, stayed close to their mothers and few leaves and approaches by either pair member were recorded. The yearling calves were responsible for maintaining contact as the mothers left them more than approached them. This behaviour on the part of mothers probably contributed to weaning of yearlings and separation after a few weeks in the area.  相似文献

Early weaning is used to advance postpartum ovulation in beef cows, but triggers a stress response, affecting cows' and calves' welfare. Our aim was to compare the response to early weaning in multiparous and primiparous cows. Seventy-one days after birth, calves from 14 primiparous and 11 multiparous cows were weaned. Since birth, cow's body weight (BW), body condition (BC), milk yield and calves' BW were recorded. Basophil/neutrophil relationship, total protein and albumin concentrations were measured before and after weaning. The distance between each cow and its calf before weaning, as well as main behaviors of the cows before and after weaning were recorded using 10 min scan sampling. BW and BC were greater in multiparous than in primiparous cows (P < 0.0001 for both). There was an interaction between parity (P = 0.004) and gender of the calf (P = 0.007): both BW and BC were greater in multiparous than primiparous cows, but multiparous cows with male calves had lower BW and BC than those with females (P < 0.001 for both variables). Milk yield was greater in multiparous than in primiparous cows (P = 0.02), and there was an interaction, with greatest milk yield in multiparous cows that calved males (P = 0.02). Total protein blood concentration increased with time (P < 0.0001), similarly in both groups. Albumin concentration profiles were similar despite parity, and decreased since 10 days after weaning (P < 0.0001). Basophil/neutrophil ratio was not affected by parity, and increased the day of weaning, remaining high until day 10 (P < 0.05). Frequency of standing decreased during the 2 days after weaning, with a greater decrease in multiparous than in primiparous cows (P < 0.0001). Pacing increased after weaning (P = 0.001), but increased significantly more in multiparous cows (P = 0.006), with a significant time after weaning by parity interaction (P = 0.01) reflected in greater frequencies in multiparous cows in the 2 days. Walking increased with time (P < 0.0001), and was more frequent in primiparous cows (P = 0.008). Ruminating, which was less frequent in multiparous cows (P = 0.014), decreased and remained low during the 3 days following weaning (P < 0.0001), but there was a significant time by parity interaction (P < 0.0001). The frequency of vocalizations increased dramatically after weaning (P < 0.0001), and was greater in multiparous cows (P = 0.006), and decreased more slowly during the 2nd and 3rd days after weaning (P = 0.005) in these animals. In conclusion, behavioral changes induced by weaning were greater in multiparous than primiparous cows, indicating a more intense response to cow-calf separation in the multiparous animals.  相似文献

Starting at parturition and continuing until weaning, mothers of five mouse litters received tap water while five others had 10 mg PbAc/ml in their drinking water. The offspring receiving lead from the mothers had significantly lower body weights after the first days of receiving lead; their slowed body growth led to a 2-day delay of onset (usually at 16-18 days) of their last rapid body growth stage. They also had significantly smaller brain weights between age 14 days and weaning (23 days). The onset of rapid brain growth was delayed from its usual onset at 16-18 days to about 22-23 days before rising to about the same value as the control mice at 26 days. Thus, the initial effect on brain growth is decidedly greater than on body growth, though brain weight later reaches close to the control value.  相似文献

Adult male association and its annual change were studied in a wild population of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) on Yakushima Island, Japan. Unlike many other Japanese macaque troops, adult troop males frequently maintained proximity and exchanged grooming with one another in both the mating and non-mating seasons, and the dominance relationship rarely appeared in such inter-male associations. The few cases of agonistic interactions occurred mostly when estrous females or food resources were immediately concerned. Although troop males were very intolerant to newly appeared solitary males (new males) during the mating season, close associations were formed between troop males and new males as soon as the mating season terminated. The consort of new males and lower-ranking troop males with estrous females was frequently disturbed, but these males could copulate no less frequently than higher-ranking males. A comparison among macaque species suggests the existence of two forms of inter-male association: (1) the frequent association based on the symmetrical exchange of social behaviors; and (2) the infrequent and asymmetrical association related to the dominance relationship. The form of inter-male association seems to be influenced by whether or not males can keep close associations with females throughout the year.  相似文献

Intersucking, i.e. sub-adult or adult cattle sucking at the udder of herd-members, is a problem often reported in dairy herds that leads to udder health problems. The causes of intersucking are virtually unknown, and until now all available countermeasures treat only the symptoms of this behavioural problem. We examined (I) whether intersucking occurs prior to weaning and continues thereafter, and (II) whether its establishment is related to the feeding management during weaning. On 10 dairy farms, we observed the sucking and feeding behaviour of a group of dairy calves (2-5 animals per farm, 38 in total) 1 week before and 1, 5 and 9 weeks after weaning. Calves were weaned off milk at an average age of 21 weeks (S.D. 4.7). We analysed the calves' food rations in order to estimate the adequacy of their energy density. Thirty-five (92%) of the 38 calves performed intersucking already before weaning, with the frequency being highly variable between individual calves (x(med)=5.0 bouts/day, range 0-24.7). Calves with a high intersucking activity before weaning were likely to continue intersucking after weaning (P<0.05). Before and after weaning intersucking could be observed at nearly every time of the day, but was most frequent around feeding. Calves with a long feeding duration (x(med)=260min, range 186-374) showed less frequent intersucking 1 week after weaning (P<0.05). In addition, the frequency of intersucking increased with decreasing adequacy of their rations energy density (r=-0.88, P<0.01), and the highest intersucking activity was recorded on farms with restricted availability of food. The results indicate that intersucking occurs already before weaning, and its establishment may be prevented by a ration and a feeding management that ensures an optimal transition from pre-ruminants to ruminants.  相似文献

The nocturnal distribution and behavior of individually marked Macaca mulatta were studied at the La Parguera, Puerto Rico, colony of the Caribbean Primate Research Center. The new image intensifier was used successfully to identify 399 monkeys in 185 sleeping clusters. Monkeys moved into mangrove trees close to favorite feeding areas usually 35 minutes after sunset. The group condensed to less than one-half the daytime spread, vocalizations increased and grooming ceased. Movements and vocalizations ceased several hours after sunset, although bursts of activity occurred throughout the night. Activity resumed 40 minutes before sunrise. Activity was higher during full moon, when I observed feeding, play and sexual behavior. Fights at night were twice as frequent during the breeding season. Monkeys slept in clusters of one to four, 58% of which were of two. Sixty-three percent were composed of maternal relatives, 33% were mother-infant pairs. Mature males clustered with non-related males, slept alone or with females (in the breeding season). Yearlings slept with their mothers or with older siblings. Distribution of monkeys in a group at night reflects daytime associations.  相似文献

We describe the movements and fates of 36 collared gray-cheeked male mangabeys (Lophocebus albigena) that resided in seven social groups in Kibale National Park, Uganda. The male mangabeys were captured, radiotagged, and then contacted regularly over a period of up to 8 years. Individuals varied considerably in how tightly they were associated with their groups. "Central" males were usually found in close spatial association with their own groups, but they sometimes visited others. "Peripheral" males were often found several hundred meters away from their own groups. Most adult males were characterized by repeated intergroup transfers, manifested as "visits" and "dispersals." Visits were transfers that did not result in mating. The visits were brief, and ranged from a few minutes to a few days before the male returned to his previous group, moved on to another group, or returned to solitary life. The term "dispersal" refers to a transfer that results in mating, after which the male remains in the new group. Young males began to drift away from their natal groups in early subadulthood, but the timing of first associations with estrous females in other groups was highly variable. Natal dispersers were generally solitary for a month or more, and at least half moved into nonadjacent groups. Secondary dispersal was common. After they immigrated, adult males remained in a group for a median of 19 months before they emigrated again, with the probability of departure being approximately constant in time. Secondary dispersal was usually made into an adjacent group and lasted less than 7 days. Emigration and immigration were not seasonal, and males emigrated singly and apparently independently; however, immigrations were clumped in time, and male dispersal contributed to considerable heterogeneity of group composition. L. albigena dispersal patterns are intermediate between those described for Papio baboons and forest Cercopithecus, and models that predict demographic consequences of dispersal for baboons can be refined to apply to mangabeys.  相似文献

The social interactions between young male Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) and members of two adjacent groups were studied. Young males usually associated with members of a single group. Although some young males occasionally interacted with members of the neighboring group, the frequency of their intergroup affiliative interactions was much lower than that of their intragroup interactions. The intergroup affiliative interactions were less symmetrical than the intragroup interactions. Three- or four-year-old males who remained in their natal group interacted with males of the neighboring group, whereas males over 5 years old did not. Young males revealed a dramatic change in their association partners from males in one group to those in another during the course of their intergroup transfer. Males who remained in their natal group did not attempt to interact with females of the neighboring group. In contrast, males who had transferred to a non-natal group interacted with females in their natal group. It is suggested that intergroup affiliative interactions and intergroup transfer of young male macaques are influenced by close associations between males. The immediate motivation for transfer of young natal macaques may be some attraction to males outside their group rather than sexual attraction to unfamiliar females.  相似文献

Public health recommendations promote prolonged breastfeeding of all children; however, parental investment (PI) theory predicts that breastfeeding will be allocated among a mothers'' offspring to maximize her reproductive success. We evaluated PI in terms of risk for weaning before age two among 283 children in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Results demonstrate: (i) a Trivers–Willard effect—high socioeconomic status (SES) females and low SES males were more likely to be weaned early; (ii) later-born children were less likely to be weaned early; (iii) higher birthweight children were less likely to be weaned early, and (iv) no effect of cattle (a source of supplementary milk) ownership. These associations were largely independent and remained significant in models controlling for potential confounders; however, the inverse association between early weaning and birth order lost significance in the model containing birthweight. These patterns were observed despite public health recommendations encouraging breastfeeding for at least two years.  相似文献

The effect of high multivitamin intake during pregnancy on the metabolic phenotype of rat offspring was investigated. Pregnant Wistar rats (n=10 per group) were fed the AIN-93G diet with the recommended vitamin (RV) content or a 10-fold increase [high vitamin (HV) content]. In experiment 1, male and female offspring were followed for 12 wk after weaning; in experiment 2, only males were followed for 28 wk. Body weight (BW) was measured weekly. Every 4 wk, after an overnight fast, food intake over 1 h was measured 30 min after a gavage of glucose or water. An oral glucose tolerance test was performed every 3-5 wk. Postweaning fasting glucose, insulin, ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide-1, and systolic blood pressure were measured. No difference in BW at birth or litter size was observed. Food intake was greater in males born to HV dams (P<0.05), and at 28 wk after weaning, BW was 8% higher (P<0.05) and fat pad mass was 27% higher (P<0.05). Food intake reduction after the glucose preload was nearly twofold less in males born to HV dams at 12 wk after weaning (P<0.05). Fasting glucose, insulin, and ghrelin were 11%, 62%, and 41% higher in males from HV dams at 14 wk after weaning (P<0.05). Blood glucose response was 46% higher at 23 wk after weaning (P<0.01), and systolic blood pressure was 16% higher at 28 wk after weaning (P<0.05). In conclusion, high multivitamin intake during pregnancy programmed the male offspring for the development of the components of metabolic syndrome in adulthood, possibly by its effects on central mechanisms of food intake control.  相似文献

The metaphor of the “genetic program,” indicating the genome as a set of instructions required to build a phenotype, has been very influential in biology despite various criticisms over the years. This metaphor, first published in 1961, is thought to have been invented independently in two different articles, one by Ernst Mayr and the other by François Jacob and Jacques Monod. Here, after a detailed analysis of what both parties meant by “genetic program,” I show, using unpublished archives, the strong resemblance between the ideas of Mayr and Monod and suggest that their idea of genetic program probably shares a common origin. I explore the possibility that the two men met before 1961 and also exchanged their ideas through common friends and colleagues in the field of molecular biology. Based on unpublished correspondence of Jacob and Monod, I highlight the important events that influenced the preparation of their influential paper, which introduced the concept of the genetic program. Finally, I suggest that the genetic program metaphor may have preceded both papers and that it was probably used informally before 1961.  相似文献

Play behaviour has been proposed as a measure of good welfare in growing animals and locomotor play by calves is often reduced after weaning off milk. Adjusting weaning age according to individual calves’ abilities to eat solid feed maintains energy intake and weight gain during weaning. We investigated the effects of this method of weaning on locomotor play of calves and the relationship between locomotor play and energy intake and weight gains. We measured the running behaviour of 56 Holstein heifer calves before and after weaning. Calves were housed in groups of eight, fed milk, grain starter and hay from automated feeders. Weaning began when their voluntary intake of grain starter reached either 200 or 400 g/day, and weaning was completed when starter intake reached either 800 or 1600 g/day. Before weaning, older calves ran less than young ones; and the duration of running correlated with weight gains and digestible energy intake. Immediately after weaning, digestible energy intake and locomotor play decreased but no correlation was observed between these variables. One week after weaning, the duration of running was correlated with both energy intake and weight gain. Digestible energy intake increased but locomotor play continued to decrease. The amount of running a calf does after weaning partly reflects energy intake and weight gain, supporting suggestions that locomotor play is good indicator of welfare and fitness of growing animals. However, the decline in locomotor play following weaning is not solely due to decreased energy intake.  相似文献

Blood samples were collected from primiparous sows via indwelling jugular cannulae at 15-min intervals for 12 h before and for 24 h (2 sows) or 48 h (10 sows) after weaning and then every 4 h until behavioural oestrus. Weaning to oestrus intervals ranged from 3 to 10 days and 2 sows showed no signs of oestrus and had not ovulated by Days 11 and 16 after weaning. Prolactin concentrations in plasma decreased significantly (P less than 0.001) and reached basal levels 1-2 h after weaning in all sows whilst plasma progesterone concentrations remained basal until approximately 30 h after the preovulatory LH surge in sows that ovulated. Elevated concentrations of prolactin or progesterone during the post-weaning period were, therefore, not responsible for delayed restoration of cyclicity. Overall, mean LH concentrations rose significantly (P less than 0.001) from 0.22 +/- 0.02 during the 12-h period before weaning to 0.38 +/- 0.03 ng/ml during the 12-h post-weaning period. After weaning, pulsatile and basal LH secretions were markedly increased for sows that showed an early return to oestrus (less than or equal to 4 days) compared with sows showing a longer weaning to oestrus interval but a correlation did not exist between either of these LH characteristics and the time taken to resume cyclicity. Mean LH concentrations before weaning were, however, inversely related (r = -0.649; P less than 0.05) to the weaning to oestrus interval. Overall, mean FSH concentrations rose significantly (P less than 0.001) from 151.1 +/- 6.2 (s.e.m.) ng/ml in the 12-h period immediately before weaning to 187.7 +/- 9.7 ng/ml in the subsequent 12-h period but there was no correlation between FSH concentrations, before or after weaning, and the interval from weaning to oestrus. However, a significant correlation was apparent between ovulation rate and peak concentrations of the rise in FSH after weaning (r = 0.746; P less than 0.05) and overall mean FSH values (r = 0.645; P less than 0.05). It is concluded that both LH and FSH concentrations in peripheral blood rose in response to removal of the suckling stimulus at weanling. The increase in LH pulse frequency associated with weaning was not directly related to the weaning to oestrus interval although a specific pattern of LH secretion was observed in sows showing an early return to oestrus (less than or equal to 4 days).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Border Leicester x Merino ewes were fasted for the first six days or the second six days of the oestrous cycle preceding mating in the fall season. When not fasting, ewes were grazed with a control group on irrigated pasture. Compared with control ewes, fasting had no effect on oestrous occurrence or fertilization but did reduce the ovulation rate, especially where fasting occurred early in the oestrous cycle.  相似文献
