This study examined the effects of housing 24 adult female pigs in groups of 2, 4 or 8 with a space allowance of 1.4 m2 per pig on welfare status, as indicated by plasma free-corticosteroid concentrations and behaviour patterns, and sexual behaviour. Housing gilts in pairs resulted in an increase in free corticosteroid concentrations(measured 11 and 84 days after the start of the treatments) and an increase in the number of observations of lying behaviour without physical contact with another pig (recorded 21 days after entering the treatment) compared to housing in groups of 4 or 8. Overall mean free corticosteroid concentrations (±S.E.) were 3.1 ± 0.29, 2.3 ± 0.26 and 1.9 ± 0.12 ng ml−1, and the mean numbers of observations of lying-alone behaviour (out of a total of 88 observations) were 6.4, 3.6 and 1.9 for gilts housed in groups of 2, 4 or 8, respectively. Although there were no differences between treatments in agonistic behaviour around the time of feeding, these data suggest there are undefined social stressors in pigs housed in pairs. Housing treatment had no significant effects on sexual behaviour. However, the mating rate was low in all treatments, possibly due to a sub-optimal space allowance. 相似文献

During oestrus, fattening female pigs are more prone to lameness, fractures and wounds due to mounting and agonistic behaviours of penmates. This study assessed the effect of sexual maturity on the behaviour and welfare of heavy female pigs slaughtered at 36 weeks of age (180±10 kg) for dry-cured ham production. An immunocastrated control group was used for comparison. In all, 56 15-week-old female pigs, individually identifiable by back tattoos were equally distributed among four pens. All animals from two pens were subject to a three-dose immunocastration schedule at 16, 20 and 32 weeks of age. Skin lesions and behaviours were assessed at 18, 23, 28, 33 and 36 weeks of age. A blood sample was collected at 20, 24, 28 and 32 weeks of age for assessing health/stress parameters and GnRH antibodies. At slaughter, ovaries were weighed, measured and histologically examined; stomachs, carcasses and lungs were scored for lesions and a further blood sample was taken. Immunocastrated pigs did not significantly differ from controls in growth rate, feed efficiency and slaughter performances (lung score, gastric score, backfat thickness). However, they showed a lower frequency of aggressive interactions at 33 and 36 weeks, lower front lesions at 28 weeks, but higher at 30 weeks; a lower haptoglobin level at 28 weeks, a lower level of cortisol and back lesions at slaughter (36 weeks). These findings suggest a low, yet not negligible, impact of sexual maturity on the welfare of heavy female pigs. 相似文献

In each of two experiments, four groups of 10 female Scottish Blackface sheep grazed for 2 weeks at each of four space allowances, according to a Greco-Latin Square design. Space allowances were 80, 100, 133 or 200m(2) per head in Experiment 1 and 50, 67, 100 or 200m(2) per head in Experiment 2. Confounding of space allowance and grazing pressure was avoided by the use of a rotational grazing system. Mean distances between sheep were measured from video recordings and distances expected by chance were calculated from simulations in which sheep were located within plot areas using randomly selected co-ordinates.Total time spent grazing was higher at 200m(2) per head and less at 50m(2) per head than at other space allowances, but there was no evidence for an effect of space allowance on herbage intake or digestibility, biting rate or the proportion of grazing time spent in ingestive behaviour. At space allowances from 50 to 133m(2) per head, there were no significant differences between mean observed inter-animal distances and those expected by chance, but observed values were lower than expected values at 200m(2) per head. At all space allowances, mean observed distances between sheep and their nearest neighbours were lower than distances expected by chance. The results show that, on relatively high quality, homogeneous vegetation, female Scottish Blackface sheep will graze at space allowances between 50 and 200m(2) per animal with no evidence of repulsion between individuals and with no clear evidence of grouping until space allowance reaches 200m(2). It is concluded that the relationship between grazing time and space allowance may reflect the extra activity required to maintain group cohesion as space allowance increases. 相似文献

Age at sexual maturation among female cotton rats was measured in a variety of intraspecific social environments. Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment I, female cotton rats attained vaginal perforation and first estrus at younger ages and lighter body masses when paired from weaning with a conspecific juvenile male than when caged alone. In Experiment II, these findings were replicated and extended. Females housed with juvenile males matured at the youngest ages, while those housed alone matured at the oldest ages. Females housed with adult males matured at intermediate ages. Presence of a second juvenile female during maturation was significantly associated with early vaginal opening but not with early first estrus. The results of this study are discussed in context of similar social environmental effects on female sexual maturation that have been identified in other rodent species. 相似文献

Male harassment of females to gain mating opportunities is a consequence of an evolutionary conflict of interest between the sexes over reproduction and is common among sexually reproducing species. Male Trinidadian guppies Poecilia reticulata spend a large proportion of their time harassing females for copulations and their presence in female social groups has been shown to disrupt female-female social networks and the propensity for females to develop social recognition based on familiarity. In this study, we investigate the behavioural mechanisms that may lead to this disruption of female sociality. Using two experiments, we test the hypothesis that male presence will directly affect social behaviours expressed by females towards other females in the population. In experiment one, we tested for an effect of male presence on female shoaling behaviour and found that, in the presence of a free-swimming male guppy, females spent shorter amounts of time with other females than when in the presence of a free-swimming female guppy. In experiment two, we tested for an effect of male presence on the incidence of aggressive behaviour among female guppies. When males were present in a shoal, females exhibited increased levels of overall aggression towards other females compared with female only shoals. Our work provides direct evidence that the presence of sexually harassing males alters female-female social behaviour, an effect that we expect will be recurrent across taxonomic groups. 相似文献

To obtain quantitative information that can be later used in animal welfare modelling, the relationship between the lying behaviour of growing-finishing pigs (initial body weight (BW) between 19 and 87 kg) and different factors related to the housing conditions, with a potential negative effect on their welfare, was studied by means of a meta-analytical approach. Data from 22 experiments reported in 21 scientific publications were collected. The space allowance, expressed on an allometric basis by means of a k-value (m2/BW0.667), the group size (n) and the floor characteristics (fully and partly slatted v. non-slatted floor), as well as their significant two-way interactions were used as fixed effects, and the experiment was used as a random factor to take into account the interexperiment effect. Further regression analyses were performed on the predicted values of observations in order to improve the adjustment of data. A significant quadratic relationship was established between space allowance (k-value, P < 0.05; squared k-value, P < 0.01) and the percentage of time spent lying. A significant interaction between the k-value and the floor type was also found (P < 0.05), showing that the relationship between space allowance and lying behaviour is affected by the presence or absence of slats. Threshold k-values were obtained using broken-line analyses, being about 0.039 for slatted floors and almost double for non-slatted floors. Compared to other studies, these values suggest that the ability to rest as space availability decreases may be compromised before a reduced performance becomes apparent. Group size did not show a significant effect. Additional information should be added to the model, as further data become available, to adjust the proposed parameters as well as to try to include the effect of other important aspects such as that of ambient temperature. 相似文献

This study sought to evaluate the effect of cage space and earthen flooring on the behaviour of individually caged, farmed
blue foxes (Alopex lagopus). Three different cage sizes [80 cm long (CL80), 120 cm long (CL120), 240 cm long (CL240); each 105 cm wide×70 cm high] with
wire-mesh flooring, and one two-level cage (CL240E) with both wire-mesh (240 cm long×105 cm wide×70 cm high) and earthen flooring
(80 cm long×105 cm wide×70 cm high) were employed. Quantitative ethograms were obtained from ten males in each group by videotaping
the animals for 144 h monthly from August through November. Altogether 30 different behaviours were described. These were
rather similar in all study groups. Examples of behavioural differences included pacing around with a neighbour and the incidence
of scratching, which both declined with increasing cage space. Only the foxes in the cage with an earthen flooring (CL240E)
exhibited digging behaviour, which averaged 11 min/24 h. The wire-mesh section was distinctly preferred to the earthen-floor
section for most behaviours. Foxes in all groups were at their most active from 0800 to 1600 hours. Total activity, including
several separate behaviours, declined as winter approached. Locomotor and oral stereotypies were infrequent, and no significant
differences were found between the various cage options. For several hours before feeding, the foxes showed increasing levels
of stereotypies, but afterwards, stereotypies abruptly declined.

Ongoing development of brain systems for social behaviour renders these systems susceptible to the influence of stressors in adolescence. We previously found that adult male rats that underwent social instability stress (SS) in mid-adolescence had decreased sexual performance compared with control males (CTL). Here, we test the hypotheses that SS in adolescence decreases the “attractiveness” of male rats as sexual partners compared with CTL rats and that dominance status is a protective factor against the effects of SS. The main prediction was that females would spend more time with CTL males than SS males, and that this bias would be greater for submissive than for dominant rats. Among dominant pairs (n = 16), females preferred SS males, spending more time with and visiting more often SS than CTL males (each pair tested 5 ×), and SS males had shorter latencies to ejaculation, shorter inter-ejaculation intervals, and made more ejaculations compared with CTL males. Among submissive pairs (n = 16), females spent more time with, visited more often, and displayed more paracopulatory behaviour with CTL than with SS males, and differences in sexual performance between SS and CTL males were modest and in the opposite direction from that in dominant pairs. The heightened motivation of SS males relative to CTL males for natural rewards may have attenuated differences in sexual performance in a paced mating context. In sum, the experience of stress in adolescence leads to long-lasting changes in males that are perceptible to females, are moderated by social status, and influence sexual behaviour. 相似文献

The minimal legal space allowance for grouped pregnant sows in the EU is 2.25 m2/sow. The effect of higher space per animal on agonistic behaviour and social stress of animals living in dynamic groups is not known. Two groups of 34 pregnant Belgian Landrace sows were housed in two pens of respectively 102 m2 (3 m2/sow) and 76.5 m2 (2.25 m2/sow). Each sow lived there for 15 weeks. Sows were fed through an electronic sow feeder. According to the dynamic system, one third of each group (i.e. 11 or 12 nearly parturient sows) was replaced every 5 weeks by the same number of recently inseminated sows. Welfare indicators were collected during six of these 5 week-periods: performance, agonistic behaviour, skin lesion score and salivary cortisol. No differences were observed for production parameters, or for fighting activity. However, the mean number of one-way aggressions, when observed during 2 h-periods at 3 and 8 days after grouping, was significantly lower in the large pen than in the small one (respectively 16 ± 2 versus 26 ± 3, p < 0.01, and 10 ± 2 versus 20 ± 5, p < 0.05). The mean number of injuries was also lower with the 3 m2 space allowance, when collected on the introduced sows one, 2 and 3 weeks after grouping. Some contradictory differences in salivary cortisol were noted 2 and 26 h after mixing, but without reaching statistical significance. An available area 33% higher than the EU legal minimum reduced agonistic behaviour and consecutive wounds and thus induced better welfare conditions for sows living in dynamic groups and fed with an electronic sow feeder. The impact on productivity and social physiological stress need further research. 相似文献

Variation in timing and distance of dispersal movements of juvenile birds may result from differences in competitive ability. Dispersal by low-ranking juveniles may be initiated before dominants if the latter force subordinate siblings from natal areas. Conversely, when vacant territories are limited and are acquired on a first-come first-served basis, selection could operate on young to disperse as early as possible. In this case, dominant individuals with priority of access to resources in the natal area will mature more quickly and are expected to disperse first. If costs of dispersal increase with dispersal distance, dominant juveniles are expected to disperse shorter distances. Alternately, if there are advantages to long-distance dispersal, then dominants, which are in better condition, should disperse further than subordinates. We examined effects of social rank on the timing and distance (to wintering area) of dispersal movements by juvenile western screech-owls, Otus kennicottii, in southwestern Idaho. Based on observations of aggressive interactions made using video cameras attached to nestboxes, we assigned dominance ranks to nestlings within nine broods. We radiotracked young throughout the postfledging period to determine order of dispersal, and we located them after leaving their natal areas to determine distances to apparent overwintering areas. In six of seven broods, for which dispersal information could be recorded, the most dominant juvenile dispersed first. Moreover, in five of seven broods, the least dominant individual was the last individual to disperse, and the order of dispersal matched the dominance hierarchy in four of seven broods. In contrast, social status did not affect postfledging dispersal distance. We conclude that social dominance relationships influenced the timing of dispersal in juvenile western screech-owls but not distance travelled to overwinter sites. Plasma free-corticosteroid concentrations, aggressive behaviour and levels of motivation to socially interact and explore a novel environment were observed in an experiment to test the hypothesis that the chronic stress response previously observed in tether housed pigs may have been due to unresolved aggression between adjacent pigs, and was attributable to the design of the stall. Twenty-five pregnant gilts were housed in 4 treatments: unmodified tether stalls; modified tether stalls (designed to reduce aggressive interactions between adjacent pigs by the addition of steel mesh to part of the stall division); cage stalls (also with mesh divisions); and a group.Gilts in the unmodified tether stalls showed a sustained elevation of free-corticosteroid concentrations, indicative of a chronic stress response, changes in their level of motivation to interact with stimulus pigs in a standard test, and a higher proportion of aggressive interactions between neighbouring pigs resulting in withdrawal rather than retaliation. These data suggest reduced welfare in the unmodified tether stalls. The addition of mesh to the sides of the tether stalls reduced the number of interactions between neighbouring pigs compared to the unmodified tether stalls treatment and virtually eliminated aggressive interactions. Concomitant to the reduction in aggressive interactions was a reduction in free-corticosteroid concentrations, suggesting that the welfare of pigs in the modified tether stalls, cage stalls and group treatments was similar. It was concluded that modifying the design of the tether stall to minimize aggressive interactions between adjacent pigs improves welfare by avoiding a chronic increase in free-corticosteroid concentrations. 相似文献

Effects of male paragonial gland secretion on sexual receptivity and courtship behaviour of female Drosophila melanogaster 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Female Drosophila melanogaster show a switch-off in sexual receptivity and an increase in oviposition rate following impregnation. These effects are also observed in unfertilized virgin females which receive transplants of intact male paragonia into the abdominal body cavity. Virgin Amherst wildtype females show a repertoire of responses to male courtship characterized by high rates of kicking and fending and a low rate of genital extrusion. Fertilized females show low rates of kicking and fending but a high rate of genital extrusion. Virgin female hosts receiving paragonial gland implants show an altered pattern of courtship rejection with low rates of kicking and fending. Studies on these host females, and on females homozygous for the mutant allele female-sterile, suggest that the expression of genital extrusion depends, in addition to the paragonial gland substance, upon additional information input from abdominal stretch receptors or from the ovary. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine, Improvac™ (Pfizer Ltd), in suppressing aggressive and sexual behaviour of male pigs. One hundred and thirty-six pigs were assigned to three treatments: entire male pigs (n = 64), immunocastration against GnRH (n = 48) and surgical castration (n = 24). Surgical castration was performed before the age of 1 week. Vaccination comprised two injections: the first injection was given 8 to 11 weeks before slaughter and the second injection 4 weeks before slaughter. After the second injection, immunocastrated pigs showed less non-violent social and aggressive behaviours than entire male pigs of the same age. Mounting was reduced to the same low level as observed in surgically castrated pigs, and more immunocastrated pigs were without skin lesions compared with entire male pigs. Pigs that received the second injection only 1 week before the observation day did not differ significantly in behaviour from those that received the injection 3 weeks before the observation day. Thus, the behaviour seems to change soon after the second injection and these changes remain until slaughter. 相似文献

Temporal variation in selection has long been proposed as a mechanism by which genetic variation could be maintained despite short‐term strong directional selection and has been invoked to explain the maintenance of consistent individual differences in behaviour. We tested the hypothesis that ecological changes through time lead to fluctuating selection, which could promote the maintenance of variation in female behavioural traits in a wild population of North American red squirrels. As predicted, linear selection gradients on female aggression and activity significantly fluctuated across years depending on the level of competition among juveniles for vacant territories. This selection acted primarily through juvenile overwinter survival rather than maternal fecundity. Incorporating uncertainty in individual measures of behaviour reduced the magnitude of annual selection gradients and increased uncertainty in these estimates, but did not affect the overall pattern of temporal fluctuations in natural selection that coincided with the intensity of competition for vacant territories. These temporal fluctuations in selection might, therefore, promote the maintenance of heritable individual differences in behaviour in this wild red squirrel population. 相似文献

Accommodating cattle indoors during the winter is widely practiced throughout Europe. There is currently no legislation surrounding the space allowance and floor type that should be provided to cattle during this time, however, concerns have been raised regarding the type of housing systems currently in use. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of space allowance and floor type on performance and welfare of finishing beef heifers. Continental crossbred heifers (n=240: mean initial live; weight, 504 (SD 35.8) kg) were blocked by breed, weight and age and randomly assigned to one of four treatments; (i) 3.0 m2, (ii) 4.5 m2 and (iii) 6.0 m2 space allowance per animal on a fully slatted concrete floor and (iv) 6.0 m2 space allowance per animal on a straw-bedded floor, for 105 days. Heifers were offered a total mixed ration ad libitum. Dry matter intake was recorded on a pen basis and refusals were weighed back twice weekly. Heifers were weighed, dirt scored and blood sampled every 3 weeks. Whole blood was analysed for complete cell counts and serum samples were assayed for metabolite concentrations. Behaviour was recorded continuously using IR cameras from days 70 to 87. Heifers’ hooves were inspected for lesions at the start of the study and again after slaughter. Post-slaughter, carcass weight, conformation and fat scores and hide weight were recorded. Heifers housed at 4.5 m2 had a greater average daily live weight gain (ADG) than those on both of the other concrete slat treatments; however, space allowance had no effect on carcass weight. Heifers accommodated on straw had a greater ADG (0.15 kg) (P<0.05), hide weight (P<0.01) better feed conversion ratio (P<0.05) and had greater dirt scores (P<0.05) at slaughter than heifers accommodated on concrete slats at 6.0 m2. The number of heifers lying at any one time was greater (P<0.001) on straw than on concrete slats. Space allowance and floor type had no effect on the number of hoof lesions gained or on any of the haematological or metabolic variables measured. It was concluded that increasing space allowance above 3.0 m2/animal on concrete slats was of no benefit to animal performance but it did improve animal cleanliness. Housing heifers on straw instead of concrete slats improved ADG and increased lying time; however carcass weight was not affected. 相似文献

In dairy calves kept in pens, lack of sufficient space may inhibit the performance of play behaviour. The present study investigated, firstly, if an increase in space allowance increases the occurrence of play behaviour, and secondly, if calves kept at a low space allowance perform more locomotor play when released individually in a large novel area. A total of 96 dairy calves in six repetitions were housed in groups of four, in pens of either 4, 3, 2.2 or 1.5 m(2) per calf from 2 weeks of age. The occurrence of play behaviour in the home environment was recorded continuously for each individual calf during 24 h at 5, 7 and 9 weeks of age. Locomotor play decreased over the weeks (54, 29 and 19 s for weeks 5, 7 and 9, respectively; F(2,40)=17.98; P<0.001), and the interaction between space allowance and week tended to be significant (F(6,40)=1.96; P<0.10). At 5 weeks of age, calves kept at 4 or 3 m(2) per calf performed more locomotor play in the home environment than calves at 2.2 or 1.5 m(2) per calf (68, 74, 38 and 39 s for 4, 3, 2.2 and 1.5 m(2) per calf, respectively; F(3,15)=3.40; P<0.05), but in weeks 7 and 9, no effects of space allowance were found. In addition, the duration of locomotor play was recorded for all calves during an individual 10-min open-field test in a 9.6x4.8 m arena at 4 and 10 weeks of age. During the open-field test at 10 weeks of age, calves from pens with 1.5 m(2) per calf performed more locomotor play than calves on the remaining treatments (10, 9, 12 and 25 s for 4, 3, 2.2 and 1.5 m(2) per calf, respectively; F(3,15)=4.05; P<0.05). The present study shows that an increase in the available space increases the occurrence of locomotor play in the home environment at 5 weeks of age. It also shows that calves kept in pens with the smallest space allowance performed more locomotor play behaviour when released in a large arena at 10 weeks of age. 相似文献
