Twitch characteristics of tibialis anterior muscles in situ were examined in stress-susceptible and normal swine. Three groups of pigs were studied: (1) purebred Pietrain stress-susceptible, (2) purebred Yorkshire normal, and (3) a crossbred (Pietrain-Yorkshire) litter containing both stress-susceptible and normal animals. Purebred and crossbred stress-susceptible pigs provided qualitatively similar results, as did purebred and crossbred normal pigs. Single stimuli produced greater than normal peak tensions and faster rates of tension development in stress-susceptible animals. Multiple stimuli (2-6 pulses at 5-ms intervals) increased peak tensions and rates of tension development, but did not augment differences between normal and stress-susceptible pigs. Intravenous administration of dantrolene reduced peak tensions and rates of tension development in all groups for single and multiple stimuli. However, the reduction was significantly less (P less than 0.01) for stress-susceptible pigs. Multiple stimuli (4-6 pulses) plus dantrolene amplified differences (P less than 0.01) in contractile properties between normal and stress-susceptible skeletal muscles, with stress-susceptible muscles obtaining larger peak tensions and faster rates of tension development. Normal and stress-susceptible pigs may, therefore, be distinguished by these procedures.  相似文献

Ex situ conservation of threatened species may lead to behavioural adaptation, which can affect success of reintroduction attempts. In previous studies, we investigated the effects of captivity on the behaviour of red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus) and found that captive populations differed behaviourally as well as genetically. The aim of the present study was to compare the behaviour of two of the previously studied populations, raised under identical conditions. Eggs were collected from birds at Copenhagen zoo (Cop) and Götala research station (Got) and were incubated and hatched together. Twenty-eight birds (16 Got and 12 Cop) were reared together and tested in eight different behavioural tests, measuring different aspects of fear-related behaviours as well as exploratory and social behaviours. The study revealed several differences in fear-related behaviours between the populations but none in exploratory or social behaviours. In general, one of the populations (Cop) showed more intense fear behaviours than the other (Got), which instead were less fearful in their behaviours. This indicates that breeding animals in captivity may lead to behavioural modifications, which can affect the outcome of reintroductions. The results further suggest that fear-related behaviours are dependent on the genetic background of the animals while social behaviours may be more influenced by the social environment. Since fear-related behaviours, such as predator avoidance and fear of humans, are essential for a life in the wild, these aspects are crucial for the breeding of animals in captivity for conservation purposes.  相似文献

Domestic pigs build a maternal nest in the day preceding parturition. We have shown that prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) induces nest building behaviour in non-pregnant pigs. The aim of this experiment was to examine the effects of different environmental temperatures on PGF(2alpha)-induced nest building. Data were collected from 9 Large White (LW) and 10 Large Black (LB) 8-9-month-old nulliparous sows (gilts). The pigs were housed in social groups between experiments and tested individually in pens (1.8mx1.8m) containing straw, within an environmentally controlled chamber. Pigs were habituated to the testing pens (maintained at 17 degrees C) and tested once at each of three temperatures (low, 5 degrees C; moderate, 17 degrees C; high, 30 degrees C). During testing the temperature of the chamber was adjusted at 09.00h and had reached set point by10.00h. The pigs were injected intramuscularly with 3ml saline at 10.30h and 0.1mg/kg PGF(2alpha) (Lutalyse, Upjohn) at 11.30h. Behaviour was scored for 1h after treatment with saline and 1h after treatment with PGF(2alpha) using one/zero sampling from video recordings. Nest building behaviour (rooting, pawing and gathering straw) was induced by PGF(2alpha) at all temperatures in both LW and LB breeds. There was a significant increase in rooting behaviours with decreasing temperature. No significant effects of temperature were found on the scores for gather or paw. The pigs spent more time lying down at the high compared to the low temperature after both saline and PGF(2alpha) treatment. Other behaviours unrelated to nest building but induced by PGF(2alpha), such as scratching, were unaffected by temperature. The results show that the nest building behaviour of non-pregnant pigs can be induced by exogenous PGF(2alpha) treatment, and that some, but not all, aspects of PGF(2alpha)-induced nest building (rooting but not pawing or gathering) are altered by environmental temperature.  相似文献

Boar rearing, which avoids pain and suffering caused by surgical castration, provides better performance, a greater deposition of muscle tissue and leaner carcasses and thus has beneficial effects on both animal welfare and the product. Some countries that do not slaughter boars must consider their boar taint and aggressive and sexual behaviours. Considering that pigs are housed in large groups, which may complicate the formation of social hierarchies and increase fighting and mounting behaviours, some studies have conducted research with reduced numbers of pigs per pen, but these behaviours continued to be observed. However, a study of the reproductive status of pair-housed male pigs has yet to be reported. The aim of this study was to determine whether the reproductive status of uncastrated, immunocastrated and surgically castrated pair-housed male pigs alters their natural, agonistic and sexual behaviours. A total of 48 male pigs from Agroceres PIC™ genetics were assigned to three groups: surgically castrated (barrows), immunocastrated and uncastrated (boars). Natural, aggressive and sexual behaviours of the pigs were assessed by direct observations during four periods of 12 h each (six, five and three weeks before slaughter and the slaughter week). The pigs were housed in pairs from the growing phase until slaughter. Animal behaviour was observed from the finishing phase to slaughter. Carcass lesions were assessed according to five different classes (one: no injury; two to five: severely injured). Overall, boars spent more time lying and less time eating and drinking than barrows. In total of all the periods (48 h), boars expressed more aggressive and sexual behaviours than barrows, whereas immunocastrated pigs displayed similar behaviours to boars, before and after the second vaccine dose. No differences in carcass lesions between treatments and no prevalence of carcasses with severe injuries were observed. In conclusion, the reproductive status of pair-housed male pigs did not change the natural behaviour of boars, immunocastrated pigs or barrows. The agonistic and sexual behaviours of boars and barrows remained unchanged. When housing pigs in pairs, immunocastrated pigs presented similar agonistic and sexual behaviours to boars before and after the second immunocastration vaccine dose. The use of pair-housed uncastrated male pigs has generated welfare benefits for these animals, as the number of carcasses with injuries did not differ from barrows and immunocastrated pigs.  相似文献

Summary Activities of the lactate dehydrogenase within the periportal zone and within the perivenous zone in the first layer of hepatocytes adjacent to terminal hepatic venules and the remainder of the perivenous parenchyma of the liver acinus were measured using a Lowry technique during a full 24-h cycle (08.00-08.00) in untreated adult male Wistar rats kept under 12 h of light and 12 h of darkness, scotophase 18.25-06.25. In all three regions studied a broad first maximum was recorded between 10.00 and 22.00 with the peak value at 16.00 and a high and narrow peak at 24.00. Zonal and intrazonal heterogeneity of the lactate dehydrogenase were retained during the full day and night cycle. Background

To date, experimental and preclinical studies on neuropsychiatric conditions have almost exclusively been performed in experimentally-induced animal models and have only rarely relied upon an ethological approach where animals have been observed in more naturalistic settings. The laboratory species of choice has been the rodent while the potential of more closely-related non-human primates have remained largely underexplored.

Methods

The present study, therefore, aimed at investigating the possible existence of spontaneous atypical/abnormal behaviours displayed by 40 cynomolgus macaques in captive conditions using an unbiased ethological scan-sampling analysis followed by multifactorial correspondence analysis and a hierarchical clustering.

Results

The study identified five distinct profiles (groups A to E) that significantly differed on several behaviours, body postures, body orientations, gaze directions and locations in the cage environment. We suggest that animals from the low n groups (D and E) present depressive-like and anxious-like symptoms, reminiscent of depressive and generalized anxiety disorders. Inter-individual differences were highlighted through unbiased ethological observations of spontaneous behaviours and associated parameters, although these were not associated with differences in plasma or cerebrospinal fluid levels of either stress-related hormones or monoamines, i.e. in accordance with the human situation.

Conclusions

No interventional behavioural testing was required to discriminate between 3 typical and 2 atypical ethologically-defined behavioural profiles, reminiscent of certain depressive-like and anxiety-like symptoms. The use of unbiased behavioural observations might, thus, allow the identification of animal models of human mental/behavioural disorders and their most appropriate control groups.  相似文献

We have studied the ultrastructure of the pinealocyte after 24 h of immobilization. Thirty male albino rats (230 +/- 10 g) were used; the animals were divided into two groups of 15 each. One group was immobilized for 24 h (10.00 h a.m. to 10.00 h a.m.), whereas the other group was used as control. All animals were sacrificed between 10.00 and 14.00 h of the following day. Ultrastructural observations showed an euchromatinic nucleus with numerous giant 'lipid droplets' as well as abundant long 'synaptic ribbons' that were significantly more abundant than in the controls (p < 0.0005). These findings all suggest an increase in pineal activity following 24-hour immobilization.  相似文献

Indirect Genetic Effects (IGEs), also known as associative effects, are the heritable effects that an individual has on the phenotype of its social partners. Selection for IGEs has been proposed as a method to reduce harmful behaviours, in particular aggression, in livestock and aquaculture. The mechanisms behind IGEs, however, have rarely been studied. The objective was therefore to assess aggression in pigs which were divergently selected for IGEs on growth (IGEg). In a one generation selection experiment, we studied 480 offspring of pigs (Sus scrofa) that were selected for relatively high or low IGEg and housed in homogeneous IGEg groups in either barren or enriched environments. Skin lesion scores, a proxy measure of aggression, and aggressive behaviours were recorded. The two distinct IGEg groups did not differ in number of skin lesions, or in amount of reciprocal fighting, both under stable social conditions and in confrontation with unfamiliar pigs in a 24 h regrouping test. Pigs selected for a positive effect on the growth of their group members, however, performed less non-reciprocal biting and showed considerably less aggression at reunion with familiar group members after they had been separated during a 24 h regrouping test. The enriched environment was associated with more skin lesions but less non-reciprocal biting under stable social conditions. Changes in aggression between pigs selected for IGEg were not influenced by G×E interactions with regard to the level of environmental enrichment. It is likely that selection on IGEg targets a behavioural strategy, rather than a single behavioural trait such as aggressiveness.  相似文献

Some difficulties arise in studying the behaviour of marine mammals at their natural habitat mainly because they spend most of their time underwater and have complex behaviours. Therefore, many protocols and sample methods are available to better assess the behavioural ecology of this animals. Here, we compared two behavioural recording methods. The first one was the direct visual observation. The second one was recording using a digital video recorder. We hypothesise that the possibility of watching recorded videos repeatedly leads to a higher quantification of behaviours compared with the direct observation method. We found a slight variation in the frequency of behaviours according to the method used. Furthermore, we found that the video recordings should not be used as a replacement for the direct observation method. Finally, we highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of both methods. We recommend that in behavioural research, the use of video recording should be careful; it is preferable that an experienced researcher uses the direct observation method, while it is best for a person with low know–how to the use the video recording method.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of an acute stressor in the early postnatal life of pigs, surgical castration, on post-weaning behaviour, and on the behavioural, endocrine and immune responses elicited by a low-dose lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge after weaning. At 5-days-of-age, 64 male piglets were randomly assigned to undergo surgical castration or were left untreated (treatment). Pigs were weaned at 28 days-of-age. Behaviour post-weaning and mixing was assessed during a 1-h period, during which agonistic interactions were recorded. One day post-weaning, pigs were injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of 0 or 5 μg/kg of BW of LPS from Escherichia coli (challenge). Sickness behaviour was studied by scan sampling every 5 min for 45 min at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 h after the challenge. Blood samples were taken at 0, 2, 12 or 24 h after injection and were analysed for plasma concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA) and cortisol. Results showed that non-castrated pigs were more aggressive than castrated pigs immediately after weaning (P < 0.05). Administration of LPS provoked behaviours characteristic of sickness including a reduction in general activity, as well as decreased eating and exploratory behaviours (P < 0.05). These altered behaviours occurred predominantly 3-h post injection (P < 0.05). Significant treatment by challenge interactions showed that castration reduced the occurrence of sickness behaviours induced by LPS, such as depressed general activity (P < 0.01), anorexia (P < 0.01) and reduced exploratory behaviours (P < 0.05). LPS administration increased TNF- levels (P < 0.05), with peak concentrations 2 h after injection (P < 0.01). CRP levels of LPS-treated pigs were higher than saline-treated animals at 12 h (P < 0.05). LPS administration tended to increase plasma SAA levels (P < 0.1), but did not increase cortisol levels (P > 0.1). However, castration did not affect the response of pro-inflammatory cytokines, acute phase proteins and cortisol to the challenge. These results show that surgical castration reduces aggressiveness at weaning and affects specific sickness behaviours but not the endocrine and immune responses elicited by low-dose endotoxin challenge in weaned pigs.  相似文献

Mixing piglets at weaning increases plasma cortisol concentrations and agonistic behaviour. In contrast to what is observed in older pigs, studies failed to show any effect of social environment on other behavioural variables or on immune function. The lack of effect of mixing may not reflect an absence of stress, but rather the fact that the physiological effects of social reorganisation are masked by the much more important effects of diet change. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the reactivity of piglets to mixing by dissociating social reorganisation from weaning in itself. For this purpose, the influence of mixing was investigated 5 days after weaning (day 0) in eight control (C) and eight mixed (M) female pigs. Salivary cortisol and behavioural activity were measured from day −1 to day 3. Blood lymphocyte proliferation was measured on days 0 and 3. Cortisol levels were increased after mixing and returned to basal values within 24 h. Blood lymphocyte proliferation was not affected. Mixing increased resting behaviour. Cortisol and behavioural responses were influenced by the social position of individuals in their new group. Piglets seemed to avoid conflicting encounters by diminishing the synchronisation of their activities with their new group. These results suggest that social reorganisation could be stressful for weaned pigs. However, piglets seem to develop behavioural strategies, which could explain the absence of long-term endocrine and immune consequences of mixing.  相似文献

The dominance hierarchy was studied by direct observation within a total of forty-four groups of pigs aged between 8 and 30 weeks. The groups were usually made up of eight animals and included both castrated males and immature females. On the introduction of preveiously unacquainted pigs vigorous fighting occurred, usually between pairs of animals. More than one encounter was often seen to occur simultaneously. This ceased within about 24 hr and the group could be ranked by 48 hr. The top animal in the dominance hierarchy, however, was identifiable within 30 to 60 min. Social rank was not correlated with sex and weight, and it is suggested that rank is a resultant of the interaction of a number of factors. The dominant animals directed most of their aggression to the rank immediately below. The basic structure of the hierarchy results from the summation of the strong, stable relationships which seem to develop between animals immediately adjacent to each other in the social hierarchy.  相似文献

Aspects of a monogamous relationship can be inferred by observing reactions of mated individuals to unfamiliar conspecifics. The present study examined the behaviours shown by male and female titi monkeys (Callicebus moloch) toward an opposite-sex stranger, and the effect of their pairmate's absence or presence on these encounters. Behaviours within unfamiliar heterosexual pairs showed superficial similarities to behaviours of mated pairs. Although there were few affiliative behaviours between unfamiliar individuals, animals were often in spatial proximity and even performed sexual behaviour. The visual presence of a pairmate clearly affected encounters between unfamiliar heterosexual pairs in several respects. The presence of a male pairmate had a much stronger influence on all behavioural measures compared to the presence of a female pairmate. Possible functional aspects of these results are discussed.  相似文献

Experiments were performed on adult local pigs with the aim of investigating the modulatory role of ascorbic acid (AA) on their behavioural responses to 4-h, road transportation during the harmattan season. Sixteen adult pigs administered with AA at the dose of 250 mg/kg dissolve in sterile water served as experimental animals, and 13 others administered with sterile water were used as control animals. Background

Social familiarity, which is based on the ability to recognise familiar conspecific individuals following prior association, may affect all major life activities of group-living animals such as foraging, reproduction and anti-predator behaviours. A scarcely experimentally tested explanation why social familiarity is beneficial for group-living animals is provided by limited attention theory. Limited attention theory postulates that focusing on a given task, such as inspection and assessment of unfamiliar group members, has cognitive and associated physiological and behavioural costs with respect to the attention paid to other tasks, such as anti-predator vigilance and response. Accordingly, we hypothesised that social familiarity enhances the anti-predator success of group-living predatory mites, Phytoseiulus persimilis, confronted with an intraguild predator, the predatory mite Amblyseius andersoni.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We videotaped and analysed the response of two P. persimilis larvae, held in familiar or unfamiliar pairs, to attacks by a gravid A. andersoni female, using the behavioural analyses software EthoVision Pro®. Familiar larvae were more frequently close together, reacted more quickly to predator attacks, survived more predator encounters and survived longer than unfamiliar larvae.

Significance

In line with the predictions of limited attention theory, we suggest that social familiarity improves anti-predator behaviours because it allows prey to shift attention to other tasks rather than group member assessment.  相似文献

Calves were either isolated, spatially but not visually, or group-reared for eight months and then kept together. Rank orders based upon competitive interactions were similar at eight and 20 months. Almost all group-reared animals were higher in rank than all isolation-reared animals. The most frequent nearest neighbour associations were between group-reared animals especially those from the same rearing group. Also frequent at eight months were associations between calves which had been isolated in adjacent pens. Isolation-reared animals associated infrequently with group-reared animals and spent more time alone. Body weight was not correlated with rearing conditions or with behavioural measures. Increase, or decrease, in rank between eight and 20 months was associated with faster, or slower, than average weight gain.  相似文献

行为时间分配是动物对资源获取和风险防御的权衡,受到诸多因素影响。本研究采用目标动物观察法记录了可可西里冬季(交配季)雄性藏羚的行为表现,并将行为分为觅食、警戒、卧息、移动和“其他”5种类型。首先,本文通过对比青藏铁路运营前后两个交配季(2003-2004年建设期和2017-2018年运行期)之间雄性藏羚的行为时间分配差异,探讨青藏铁路的出现对雄性藏羚行为的影响。随后,基于2017-2018年交配季雄性藏羚的行为数据,分析了年龄对其行为时间分配的影响。结果表明:与建设期相比,雄性藏羚的觅食和“其他”行为时间比例明显增加,而警戒和卧息的行为时间比例显著降低,这说明铁路稳定运营后对雄性藏羚的影响降低。交配群中成年雄性藏羚的警戒、移动,以及“其他”行为中的繁殖行为的时间比例显著高于亚成体,而觅食和卧息行为时间比例显著低于亚成体, 这与交配群中不同年龄雄性个体所处的地位等级有关。成年雄性藏羚在交配群中占据主导地位,拥有更多配偶资源,增加警戒和移动,减少觅食和卧息有助于其维持交配群的稳定。  相似文献

Evaluation of activity budgets provides an indication of whether captive history has influenced the daily behaviour of animals within an ex situ reintroduction program. We conducted the first study to compare activity budgets of prides of captive-origin African lions (Panthera leo) to a wild pride investigated under the same methodologies. Behavioural data were collected via direct observations of individual lions. The vegetation type in which each pride was located was recorded at the beginning and end of each observation session. Behaviours were analysed via linear mixed models, using restricted maximum-likelihood analysis. Age, sex, origin, time observed and vegetation type were fitted as fixed factors to assess the main effects of significant interactions, while average temperature was fitted as a covariate. Resting and alert behaviours were found to vary at sex and age levels, with expected peaks and lows coinciding with observation session times. Captive-origin prides showed a decrease in resting and increase in alert and movement behaviours post-1700 hours, while this behavioural change was not observed for the wild prides. Males of the wild prides were observed to rest more than captive-origin counterparts, while this variation was not observed for females across origins. Vegetation was found to influence behaviour, with cubs being more alert and active in riverbed vegetation, and adults and sub-adults in shrubland. Overall, all prides were observed to exhibit behaviours at natural levels. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the daily activity of lions critical to the pre-release evaluation of prides within an ex situ reintroduction program.  相似文献

Summary Subcellular structures of type II alveolar epithelial cells in the rat lung were analyzed at six evenly spaced times over 24 h (light period: 06.00 h–18.00 h), using a morphometric technique. The cell volumes were maximal at 16.00 h and minimal at 08.00 h. The volume and surface densities of rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria were low during the light period, and high during the dark period. Morphometric parameters of multivesicular bodies did not significantly fluctuate over 24 h, but they increased from 04.00 h to 08.00 h. The volume densities of lamellar bodies increased from 16.00 h to 20.00 h, and decreased from 00.00 h to 08.00 h. The change in numerical densities of lamellar bodies was inversely correlated to that in the volume densities. As shown by electron microscopy, small lamellar bodies predominated at 08.00 h, larger lamellar bodies increasing at 16.00h. Composite bodies often appeared at 08.00 h and 12.00 h. Type II cells thus appear to fluctuate, showing three phases over 24 h: formation, accumulation and secretion of lamellar bodies. In particular, it is noteworthy that the accumulation stage occurs during the resting phase of the rat, whereas the secretion stage occurs during its body-active phase.  相似文献

The development of social behaviour was studied in three natural populations of Bighorn sheep ( Ovis canadensis ). Individuals in all populations exhibited the same behavioural repertoires, but the utilization of specific behaviours among both infants and adults differed between populations. It was suggested that differences in the adult utilization of behaviour patterns result in part from behaviours used during infancy. In turn, the social and physical environments affected the development of subsequent behaviour patterns in sheep older than lambs.
Desert sheep (in southern California) used mounting behaviours often, presumably because they matured sexually at an early age. Sheep in a more northern environment (British Columbia) used different behaviour patterns more frequently perhaps as a consequence of interactions experienced in larger bands. Additionally, playful interactions were reduced due to physical hazards in the desert, but they were at least nine times as frequent in the northern study population. Play in large groups resulted in the utilization of more different kinds of behaviour patterns. These behavioural findings are interpreted ecologically as consequences of inhabiting environments that differ socially and physically.  相似文献
