Ten Friesian dairy cows were fitted on the neck with a Walker pedometer to evaluate the pedometer as a low-cost means of recording grazing bite number, and a Vibrarecorder for comparison and to evaluate the between-cow and between-day coefficients of variation (CV) of grazing bouts, in order to evolve an optimum recording strategy. The total number of daily bouts averaged 5.01 with a mean duration of 1.85 h, giving a total grazing time of 9.27 h per cow per day. The grazing time recorded by the Virarecorders was generally linearly related to total daily bites recorded by the pedometers, although in some cases a quadratic function was significant which was assumed to arise from variation in the biting rate at high grazing times. The between-cow CV of daily grazing time was greater than the between-day CV, but at certain times of the day, particularly at night, the between-day CV was very high. More variation occurred in grazing bout duration than bout number and the variation in total bite number tended to be greater than grazing time.  相似文献

Differences in grazing behavior among Hereford (HH), 50% Angus-50% Hereford (AH), 50% Simmental-50% Hereford (1S1H) and 75% Simmental-25% Hereford (3S1H) lactating cows grazing foothill range were measured using vibracorders and pedometers to estimate daily grazing hours and distance traveled, respectively. There were four 10-day grazing periods during July and August. Cow weight, calf weight and milk production estimates were taken prior to Periods 1 and 4. During Periods 1, 2 and 4, the 48 cows were located on a daily basis between 06.00 and 09.00 h, and each animal location was recorded on gridded aerial photo maps. Pasture use was defined as the amount of total area utilized for grazing for the four periods.The overall mean for daily grazing hours was 9.4 h day−1 (633 observations) and no significant breed type differences were found. Daily grazing hours increased from 8.0 to 10.0 h day−1 during the 40-day observation period. Milk production and calf age significantly influenced daily grazing hours and the partial regression coefficients were 0.05 h·day−1·kg·day−1 and −0.02 h·day−1·day−1, respectively. The overall mean distance traveled was 4.7 km day−1 (82 observations) and followed the same trend as daily grazing hours. For each kilometer of travel, 2h were spent grazing during the four grazing periods. The 1S1H cows traveled less (P < 0.05) than HH, AH and 3S1H cows. Breed type means were 5.0, 4.8, 4.1 and 4.8 km day−1 for HH, AH, 1S1H and 3S1H cows, respectively. The overall mean for pasture use was 103 ha per cow (47 observations) and breed type was not significant in explaining variation in pasture use. For each kilogram increase in calf weight (adjusted for cow condition), pasture use increased by 0.5 ha (P < 0.05). Thus, the grazing behavior of different breed types under rangeland conditions was similar.  相似文献

The efficacy of pedometers as estrus detection aids was tested in a group of 47 Holstein cows during the postpartum period. Pedometers were strapped on the left front leg of each cow on the day of parturition and pedometer measurements were recorded twice daily for 60 days. The cows were also observed twice a day for behavioral signs of estrus. Daily blood samples were collected during Days 1-30, and thereafter once every two days from Days 30-60 after parturition for progesterone assay. Rectal palpations of the ovaries were carried out once every four days during the first month after parturition. Based on the progesterone profiles and rectal palpation findings, 91 ovulations were recorded in 42 cows and 5 cows remained acyclic during the observation period. Seventy-six percent (69 91 ) of the ovulations were associated with pedometer indications of estrus, while only 35% (32 91 ) of the ovulations were associated with observed estrus. Fifty-seven percent (24 42 ) of the first postpartum ovulations were associated with pedometer measurements, but only 19% (8 42 ) of the first postpartum ovulations were associated with behavioral signs of estrus. Similarly, pedometers were superior to observations as a method of detection of estrus associated with the second and third postpartum ovulations (91% vs 37%, 92% vs 78% respectively). It is concluded that pedometers are useful aids for estrus detection, particularly in the immediate postpartum.  相似文献

The postpartum period is critical for efficient reproduction, and certain features of the normal estrus cycle during this period have been associated with subsequent reproductive performance. The objectives of the present investigation were to evaluate the effects of environmental, production, and reproductive factors on walking activity at estrus as determined using pedometers during the first 50 days in milk (DIM) (study 1). In a second study, we tried to establish whether pedometer measurements recorded during this period could be used to predict subsequent fertility by considering the number of cows becoming pregnant before 90 DIM. We analyzed data derived from 995 parturitions in a single herd. Detection of estrus was performed using a pedometer system. Variables were screened for associations with walking activity by analysis of variance (ANOVA) through generalized linear model procedures (PROC GLM). Increased milk production and parity, and a mean relative humidity (RH) higher than 95% were associated with lower pedometer measurements. A higher number of animals simultaneously in estrus rendered higher pedometer readings. No significant effects of the year, season, DIM, number of previous estruses, and climatic data other than high mean RH were observed. Relationships between pedometer measurements and other variables recorded during the first 50 days postpartum, and subsequent fertility were assessed by applying logistic regression models. We detected no significant effects of year, milk production, season, and mean activity increase at estrus on high fertility. The likelihood of pregnancy before 90 DIM decreased for each additional lactation and for cows in anestrus between days 0 and 50 postpartum. However, pedometer readings during the first 50 days postpartum were unable to accurately predict subsequent fertility.  相似文献

A trial was conducted on Montana native rangeland to examine the effects of cow age and ambient air temperatures on mid-winter grazing activity of pregnant beef cows. Cows were fitted with vibracorders and pedometers for 50 continuous days in January and February to monitor daily grazing time (DGT) and distance traveled. Three-year-old cows grazed 0.7 h day−1 longer (P<0.005) and traveled 0.85 km day−1 further (P<0.05) than 5-and 7-year-old cows. Total DGT averaged 8.8 h day−1 across ages and was insensitive (P>0.05) to mean ambient temperature departures (either increases or decreases) from average temperatures of the previous 1–20 days. DGT did not remain below 8 h day−1 for more than one successive day. However, examination of grazing times within daily periods indicated significant linear respones to temperature changes. Morning (07.01–13.00 h) grazing times exhibited variable responses (P<0.05) to temperature departures from averages across the previous 17, 19 and 20 days. Grazing times during afternoons (13.01–19.00 h) and evenings (19.01–07.00 h) declined (P<0.05) when temperatures either increased or decreased from averages of the previous 6–10, and 1, 2 and 4 days, respectively. Only 17% of DGT occurred during the evening period. We concluded that in the foothill grasslands of the Northern Rockies, range beef cows maintained consistent total grazing time despite fluctuating mid-winter temperatures (8 to −26°C) and that cow age influenced grazing activity.  相似文献

As ruminants are able to digest fibre efficiently and assuming that competition for feed v. food use would intensify in the future, cereals and other field crops should primarily be destined to cover the dietary needs of humans and monogastric animals such as poultry and pigs. Farming systems with a reduced or absent concentrate supplementation, as postulated by organic agriculture associations, require adapted dairy cows. The aim of this experiment was to examine the impact of concentrate supplementation on milk production, grazing and rumination behaviour, feed intake, physical activity and blood traits with two Holstein-Friesian cow strains and to conclude the consequences for sustainable and organic farming. The experiment was a cross-over study and took place on an organic farm in Switzerland. In all, 12 Swiss Holstein-Friesian (HCH) cows and 12 New Zealand Holstein-Friesian (HNZ) cows, which were paired according to lactation number, days in milk and age for primiparous cows, were used. All cows grazed full time and were supplemented either with 6 kg/day of a commercial, organic cereal-grain mix or received no supplement. After an adaptation period of 21 days, a measurement period of 7 days followed, where milk yield and composition, pasture dry matter intake estimated with the n-alkane double-indicator technique, physical activity based on pedometer measurements, grazing behaviour recorded by automatic jaw movement recorder and blood samples were investigated. Non-supplemented cows had a lower milk yield and supplemented HCH cows produced more milk than supplemented HNZ cows. Grazing time and physical activity were greater for non-supplemented cows. Supplementation had no effect on rumination behaviour, but HNZ cows spent longer ruminating compared with HCH cows. Pasture dry matter intake decreased with the concentrate supplementation. Results of blood analysis did not indicate a strong negative energy balance for either non-supplemented or supplemented cows. Minor differences between cow strains in this short-term study indicated that both cow strains are equally suited for an organic pasture-based production system with no concentrate supplementation. Many factors such as milk yield potential, animal welfare and health, efficiency, grazing behaviour and social aspects influence the decision to supplement grazing dairy cows with concentrates.  相似文献

Pedometers are used in many studies because physical activities can be simply assessed using them. In addition to the spring-levered type, piezo-electric pedometers have recently been used. However, their accuracy in children has not been investigated in previous studies. In this study, we investigated the accuracy of spring-levered pedometer and piezo-electric pedometer step counts in comparison with hand-tallied step counts with children during self-paced walking. First to 6th-grade primary school children (394 subjects; 201 boys and 193 girls) walked with pedometers on an outdoor 50-m course, and the measured values were compared with actual steps at 3 speeds: normal, slow, and fast paces. The counts obtained by the spring-levered pedometer were significantly lower than the actual steps in most grades at all walking paces. In the normal- and fast-pace walking, the counts by spring-levered pedometer were significantly lower than the actual steps in all grades excluding the 5th grade. Moreover, the spring-levered pedometer underestimated by 25% or more in all grades at slow pace. In contrast, the percent error of the counts by the piezo-electric pedometers at normal pace were mostly within +/-3%, confirming their high accuracy. Based on these findings, spring-levered pedometers are not appropriate for children, whereas piezo-electric pedometers are useful for investigation of the physical activity of children.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to study the relationship between increase in number of steps measured by pedometers, behavioral estrous parameters and time of ovulation, in order to investigate whether the number of steps can be used as a tool for estrous detection and as a predictor for time of ovulation. In total, 63 ovulations were observed in 43 Holstein-Friesian cows. Different behavioral signs of estrus were observed at 3h intervals. Cows were equipped with pedometers, which stored number of steps in 2h time periods and pedometer estrus alerts were defined using different algorithms and thresholds. The percentage of behavioral estruses also detected by pedometers measurements, ranged between 51 and 87% for all estrous periods. When only estrous periods where taken into account in which more than one animal was in estrus, detection percentages increased up to 95%. Number of steps taken during the estrous period was higher when more animals were in behavioral estrus at the same time, and number of steps taken during the estrous period was also higher for primiparous cows compared to multiparous cows. Ovulation occurred 29.3+/-3.9h after onset of increased number of steps (ranging between 39 and 22 h) and 19.4+/-4.4h after the end of increased number of steps (ranging between 35 and 12h). The intervals were not influenced by the number of animals that were in estrus at the same time or by parity. In conclusion, pedometers can detect estrus accurately and appear to be a promising tool for prediction of ovulation and hence could be a tool for improving fertilization rates.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of the pedometer when walking, skipping, galloping, sliding, and hopping. One hundred-two college students were fitted with a pedometer (Walk4Life LS-7010) at mid-thigh on the right and left of the hip. Participants then performed the randomly assigned movements for the length (26 m) of a hardwood court playing surface, during which time the investigator tallied the steps with a hand counter. Each step with the lead foot elicited a tally on the counter. Participants were instructed to perform the movement at a brisk pace, to jump-stop at the end of the court, and to remain still until after the pedometer reading was recorded. Repeated measure ANOVAs using the Bonferroni technique were used to compare differences between pedometer counts and hand counts. Significant differences were evident between the hand tally counts and readings from the right and left pedometers during all five locomotor movements (P < .01). Mean error was lowest between the hand tally and the average of the right and left pedometers while walking (-1.35 +/- 1.60) and hopping (-2.94 +/- 2.33), and increased while sliding (-6.42 +/- 4.78), galloping (-8.22 +/- 4.63), and skipping (-8.30 +/- 4.45). Results indicate the pedometer may not consistently register the vertical force produced by the trail foot contact, the lead foot contact, or a combination of the two while skipping, galloping, and sliding. Though the pedometer is a valid instrument when estimating physical activity levels, caution is urged when interpreting movements other than walking.  相似文献

Economic profitability of a dairy farm is based, in part, on the calving interval of the cows. The optimal interval is 365 d. To achieve this, the cow needs to be pregnant within 85 d post partum. The first and most problematic step in this process is the determination of the optimal time for insemination, which is based on estrous behavior. The expression of estrous behavior, however, is at a low level in modem dairy herds, resulting in low detection rates and longer calving intervals. In the present study, a point scale was used to monitor postpartum, nonpregnant cows for estrous symptoms. Frequent blood samples were taken around estrus, and the cows were fit with pedometers to measure their activity. Correlations between the occurrence of symptoms of estrus and levels of estradiol and cortisol were then analyzed. Standing heat, the standard symptom of estrus, was observed in only 53% of the cows. A high correlation of 0.7 was found between estradiol concentration and estrous behavior. This was empasized by the fact that the estradiol level reached its highest level of 7.76 + 2.39 (SD) pg/mL at the same time as the highest behavior score. The highest pedometer readout lagged 8 h behind this moment. Cortisol levels did not exceed the physiological levels in rest situations but showed an increase at the time estrous behavior was at its maximum. The present study showed that standing heat is not the primary symptom for detecting estrus in cows. Pedometers are a useful aid but they have to be read several times a day. The high correlation between the visual symptoms of estrus and estradiol concentrations indicates that visual estrus detection is an efficient, reliable way to determine the right time for insemination.  相似文献

Increased economic, societal and environmental challenges facing agriculture are leading to a greater focus on effective way to combine grazing and automatic milking systems (AMS). One of the fundamental aspects of robotic milking is cows’ traffic to the AMS. Numerous studies have identified feed provided, either as fresh grass or concentrate supplement, as the main incentive for cows to return to the robot. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of concentrate allocation on voluntary cow traffic from pasture to the robot during the grazing period, to highlight the interactions between grazed pasture and concentrate allocation in terms of substitution rate and the subsequent effect on average milk yield and composition. Thus, 29 grazing cows, milked by a mobile robot, were monitored for the grazing period (4 months). They were assigned to two groups: a low concentrate (LC) group (15 cows) and a high concentrate (HC) group (14 cows) receiving 2 and 4 kg concentrate/cow per day, respectively; two allocations per day of fresh pasture were provided at 0700 and 1600 h. The cows had to go through the AMS to receive the fresh pasture allocation. The effect of concentrate level on robot visitation was calculated by summing milkings, refusals and failed milkings/cow per day. The impact on average daily milk yield and composition was also determined. The interaction between lactation number and month was used as an indicator of pasture availability. Concentrate allocation increased significantly robot visitations in HC (3.60±0.07 visitations/cow per day in HC and 3.10±0.07 visitations/cow per day in LC; P<0.001) while milkings/cow per day were similar in both groups (LC: 2.37±0.02/day and HC: 2.39±0.02/day; Ns). The average daily milk yield over the grazing period was enhanced in HC (22.39±0.22 kg/cow per day in HC and 21.33±0.22 kg/cow per day in LC; P<0.001). However the gain in milk due to higher concentrate supply was limited with regards to the amount of provided concentrates. Milking frequency in HC primiparous compared with LC was increased. In the context of this study, considering high concentrate levels as an incentive for robot visitation might be questioned, as it had no impact on milking frequency and limited impact on average milk yield and composition. By contrast, increased concentrate supply could be targeted specifically to primiparous cows.  相似文献

One of the main aims of pasture-based systems of dairy production is to increase the proportion of grazed grass in the diet. This is most easily achieved by increasing the number of grazing days. However, periods of inclement weather conditions can reduce the number of days at pasture. The two objectives of this experiment were: (i) to investigate the effect of restricting pasture access time on animal production, grazing behaviour and dry matter intake (DMI) of spring calving dairy cows in early lactation; and (ii) to establish whether silage supplementation is required when cows return indoors after short grazing periods. In all, 52 Holstein-Friesian spring calving dairy cows were assigned to a four-treatment study from 25 February to 26 March 2008. The four treatments were: full-time access to pasture (22H; control); 4.5-h- pasture access after both milkings (2 × 4.5H); 3-h pasture access after both milkings (2 × 3H); 3-h pasture access after both milkings with silage supplementation by night (2 × 3SH). All treatments were offered 14.4 kg DM/cow per day herbage from swards, with a mean pre-grazing yield of 1739 kg DM/ha above 4 cm, - and were supplemented with 3 kg DM/cow per day of concentrate. The 2 × 3SH treatment was offered an additional 4 kg DM/cow of grass silage by night. Restricting pasture access time (2 × 3H, 2 × 3SH and 2 × 4.5H) had no effect on milk (28.3 kg/cow per day) and solids-corrected milk (27.2 kg/cow per day) yield when compared with the treatment grazing full time. Supplementing animals with grass silage did not increase milk production when compared with all other treatments. Milk protein concentration tended to be lower (P = 0.08; 32.2 g/kg) for the 2 × 3SH animals when compared with the 22H animals (33.7 g/kg). The grass DMI of the 2 × 3SH treatment was significantly lower (-2.3 kg DM/cow per day) than all other treatments (11.9 kg DM/cow per day), yet the total DMI of these animals was highest (16.6 kg DM/cow per day). The 22H cows grazed for 481 min/cow per day, which is significantly longer than all other treatments. The 2 × 3H animals grazed for 98% of the time, whereas the 2 × 3SH grazed for 79% of their time at pasture. Restricting pasture access time did not affect end body weight or body condition score. The results of this study indicate that restricting pasture access time of dairy cows in early lactation does not affect milk production performance. Furthermore, supplementing cows with grass silage does not increase milk production but reduces grazing efficiency.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) infection can impair milk production (MP) in dairy cows. To investigate whether MP would be optimized by spring targeted-selective anthelmintic treatment in grazing cows, we assessed (1) the effect on MP of an anthelmintic treatment applied 1.5 to 2 months after turn-out, and (2) herd and individual indicators associated with the post-treatment MP response. A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted in 13 dairy farms (578 cows) in western France in spring 2012. In each herd, lactating cows of the treatment group received fenbendazole orally, control cows remained untreated. Daily cow MP was recorded from 2 weeks before until 15 weeks after treatment. Individual serum pepsinogen and anti-Ostertagia antibody levels (expressed as ODR), faecal egg count and bulk tank milk (BTM) Ostertagia ODR were measured at treatment time. Anthelmintic treatment applied during the previous housing period was recorded for each cow. In each herd, information regarding heifers’ grazing and anthelmintic treatment history was collected to assess the Time of Effective Contact (TEC, in months) with GIN infective larvae before the first calving. The effect of treatment on weekly MP averages and its relationships with herd and individual indicators were studied using linear mixed models with two nested random effects (cow within herd). Unexpectedly, spring treatment had a significant detrimental effect on MP (-0.92 kg/cow/day on average). This negative MP response was particularly marked in high producing cows, in cows not treated during the previous housing period or with high pepsinogen levels, and in cows from herds with a high TEC or a high BTM ODR. This post-treatment decrease in MP may be associated with immuno-inflammatory mechanisms. Until further studies can assess whether this unexpected result can be generalized, non-persistent treatment of immunized adult dairy cows against GIN should not be recommended in early grazing season.  相似文献

In pasture-based automatic milking systems (AMS), feed is the main incentive that can be managed to encourage reliable and consistent voluntary and distributed cow traffic. Modifying timing, placement and size of feed allocations is expected to have an effect on cow behavior that could avoid the occurrence of extended milking intervals, which have a negative effect on milk yield. Therefore, behavioral studies provide information on how cows modify their actions under different management regimes and can help explain the impact of those regimes. Behavioral observations were conducted in spring 2011 at the FutureDairy AMS research farm, as part of a study where a herd of 175 cows was split into two groups that received supplementary feed either before (PRE), or immediately after (POST) milking. In addition, all cows were offered access to two daily pasture allocations. Observations were conducted in the pasture allocation on 15 focal cows from each treatment group during four periods of 24 h to detect presence and behavior (grazing, ruminating, idling and other) every 15 min. In addition, bite rate and pasture biomass were measured every hour. Overall, despite the finding that more POST cows than PRE cows entered the pasture allocation during the first 8 h of active access, there was no difference in the total proportion of cows that had gained access by the end of the active access period (average 68% for both treatments). Cows in the PRE treatment started exiting the pasture allocation just 6 h after entering, compared with 8 h for POST cows, although their behaviors in the pasture allocation did not differ. Behaviors and bite rate were more dependent on pasture biomass than on supplementary feeding management.  相似文献

Rumen fill may be a strong intake constraint for dairy cows fed on pasture, even though pasture is highly digestible in the grasslands of temperate climates. This constraint may also depend on the cows' maturity. Moreover, indoor feeding of fresh herbage may not always be a good model for the study of intake regulation at grazing. To test these hypotheses, four mature (6.3 ± 0.72 year old) and four young (3.8 ± 0.20 year old) dairy cows were offered fresh perennial ryegrass indoors or at grazing. The impact of rumen fill on intake was evaluated by addition of rumen inert bulk (RIB; coconut fiber, 15 l) compared to a control. The experimental design was a double 4 × 4 Latin square with four 14-day periods and a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of two feeding methods (indoor feeding v. grazing), combined with the addition, or not, of RIB (RIB v. control), repeated for four mature and four young cows. Digestibility of offered herbage was 0.81. The average ytterbium measured dry matter intake (Yb DMI) was 19.0 and 15.5 kg/day for mature and young cows respectively (P = 0.019). The effect of RIB on predicted Yb DMI interacted with feeding method and cow age (P = 0.043). The presence of RIB decreased Yb DMI by 4.4 kg/day in mature cows at grazing and by 3.4 kg/day in young cows indoors, whereas it did not affect the Yb DMI of mature cows indoors or grazing young cows. Both grazing and young age constituted a clear constraint on the feeding behavior of the cows. Grazing cows had fewer ingestion and rumination sequences, which were longer and less evenly distributed throughout the day and night. Young cows had lower intake rates that were less adaptable to the feeding method and the presence of RIB. Mature cows clearly decreased their daily intake rate at grazing compared to indoor feeding, and with RIB compared to control, whereas the intake rate of young cows did not vary. These results indicate that rumen fill can represent a constraint on intake in grazing cows, even when highly digestible perennial ryegrass is offered. The study also shows that the impact of RIB on intake is highly dependent upon other constraints applied to the chewing behavior, which in this experiment were methods of offering herbage and cow age.  相似文献

For herds using AI heat detection rate and calving rate are the two major determinants of compactness of calving, of the proportion of cows that fail to conceive in a defined breeding season. Numerous factors affect the expression of heat including, housing arrangement, floor surface, feet and leg problems and status of herd mates. The number of mounts a cow receives increases with the number of cows that are in heat simultaneously up to about 3-4 cows in heat. Generally, cows that are themselves in heat, coming into heat or were recently in heat are most likely to mount a cow that is in heat. Cows that are at the mid-stages of their cycles (day 5 to about day 16) are least likely to mount a cow that is in heat and consequently could be termed "poor heat detectors". Similarly, cows that are pregnant show less interest in mounting other cows that are in heat. In smaller herds and as more cows become pregnant the likelihood of more than one cow being heat on any given day becomes less, consequently, making heat detection more difficult. The single most important factor affecting heat detection efficiency is that those responsible for checking for heat should fully understand the signs of heat and be fully committed to heat detection for as long as it is planned to use Al. Technological aids to improve heat detection include the use of tail paint, oestrous synchronisation, vasectomised bulls, pressure activated heat mount detectors, radio telemetric devices, pressure sensitive mount count devices and pedometers. As herd size increases and labour become more expensive there will be a greater adoption of some of these technological aids.  相似文献

The commercially available collar device MooMonitor+ was evaluated with regards to accuracy and application potential for measuring grazing behavior. These automated measurements are crucial as cows feed intake behavior at pasture is an important parameter of animal performance, health and welfare as well as being an indicator of feed availability. Compared to laborious and time-consuming visual observation, the continuous and automated measurement of grazing behavior may support and improve the grazing management of dairy cows on pasture. Therefore, there were two experiments as well as a literature analysis conducted to evaluate the MooMonitor+ under grazing conditions. The first experiment compared the automated measurement of the sensor against visual observation. In a second experiment, the MooMonitor+ was compared to a noseband sensor (RumiWatch), which also allows continuous measurement of grazing behavior. The first experiment on n = 12 cows revealed that the automated sensor MooMonitor+ and visual observation were highly correlated as indicated by the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (rs) = 0.94 and concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) = 0.97 for grazing time. An rs-value of 0.97 and CCC = 0.98 was observed for rumination time. In a second experiment with n = 12 cows over 24-h periods, a high correlation between the MooMonitor+ and the RumiWatch was observed for grazing time as indicated by an rs-value of 0.91 and a CCC-value of 0.97. Similarly, a high correlation was observed for rumination time with an rs-value of 0.96 and a CCC-value of 0.99. While a higher level of agreement between the MooMonitor+ and both visual observation and RumiWatch was observed for rumination time compared to grazing time, the overall results showed a high level of accuracy of the collar device in measuring grazing and rumination times. Therefore, the collar device can be applied to monitor cow behavior at pasture on farms. With regards to the application potential of the collar device, it may not only be used on commercial farms but can also be applied to research questions when a data resolution of 15 min is sufficient. Thus, at farm level, the farmer can get an accurate and continuous measurement of grazing behavior of each individual cow and may then use those data for decision-making to optimize the animal management.  相似文献

In two experiments the effects of cow age, parity, milk yield, lactation stage and nutrition on the increase in locomotion at oestrus (locomotion coefficient, LC) were examined. In Experiment 1, the LC of 49 cows was recorded with electronic pedometers. LC decreased with advancing lactation and tended to increase with cow parity number, but was unrelated to the dioestrus locomotion rate, and the cow's age or milk yield. The profile of the activity changes over oestrus was examined. Activity increased gradually from 80 h to 16 h before oestrus, whereupon it increased more rapidly and linearly to peak oestrus, followed by an exponential decay with no refractory period. In Experiment 2, 18 cows were offered high or low concentrate levels (Treatments H and L). The effect of treatment on the locomotion rate for 3 days before to 3 days after oestrus was not significant, except during metoestrus when cows in Treatment H walked further. LC was not affected by treatment. Across treatments cows that did not conceive had an inverse relationship between LC and both milk yield and liveweight gain. Cows that did conceive did not show such relationships, but cows with a high energy intake had an increased LC.  相似文献

Structural changes lead to increasing sizes of dairy herds and a reduction in grazing use. Thus, cows spend more time in the barn and become more exposed to the barn environment. The cubicle surface can result in damages of the cows’ hock joint integument. Pasture is generally seen as a beneficial environment for cows. We hypothesized that a higher number of daily grazing hours reduce the probability of hock joint alterations in dairy cows from large herds. In total, 3148 lactating cows from 36 grazing and 20 zero-grazing dairy herds, with an average herd size of 173 cows, were assessed individually on one randomly selected body side for alterations in hock integument (score 0 for no alterations or hairless areas <2 cm, 1 for at least one hairless area of ⩾2 cm, 2 for lesion or swelling). The cows were further assessed for lameness and cleanliness. Information on breed, parity and days in milk per cow was extracted from a national database. Cubicle surface was evaluated for each herd. Daily grazing hours 30 days before herd visits were recorded by the stockmen and later categorized as follows: zero hours (zero-grazing), few hours (3 to 9) and many hours (>9 to 21). The effects of daily grazing hours and other potential cow and herd-level risk factors were evaluated for their impact on hock integument alterations using a logistic analysis with a multi-level model structure. The probability for hock integument alterations such as hair loss, lesions or swellings decreased with increasing amount of grazing hours (odds of 3 to 9 h 2.2 times and odds of >9 to 21 h 4.8 times lower than of zero-grazing). The probability for only lesions or swellings decreased with >9 to 21 grazing hours (odds 2.1 times) but not with 3 to 9 h (odds 1.0 times) compared with zero-grazing. Lameness, hard cubicle surface and Danish Holstein v. other breeds showed an increasing effect on the probability for integument alterations. Increase in days in milk only showed an increasing effect on the probability for lesions and swellings. We concluded that a long daily stay on pasture is most beneficial for the hock joint integument of a dairy cow.  相似文献

Involuntary soil intake by cows on pasture can be a potential route of entry for pollutants into the food chain. Therefore, it appears necessary to know and quantify factors affecting soil intake in order to ensure the food safety in outside rearing systems. Thus, soil intake was determined in two Latin square trials with 24 and 12 lactating dairy cows. In Trial 1, the effect of pasture allowance (20 v. 35 kg dry matter (DM) above ground level/cow daily) was studied for two sward types (pure perennial ryegrass v. mixed perennial ryegrass–white clover) in spring. In Trial 2, the effect of pasture allowance (40 v. 65 kg DM above ground level/cow daily) was studied at two supplementation levels (0 or 8 kg DM of a maize silage-based supplement) in autumn. Soil intake was determined by the method based on acid-insoluble ash used as an internal marker. The daily dry soil intake ranged, between treatments, from 0.17 to 0.83 kg per cow in Trial 1 and from 0.15 to 0.85 kg per cow in Trial 2, reaching up to 1.3 kg during some periods. In both trials, soil intake increased with decreasing pasture allowance, by 0.46 and 0.15 kg in Trials 1 and 2, respectively. In Trial 1, this pasture allowance effect was greater on mixed swards than on pure ryegrass swards (0.66 v. 0.26 kg reduction of daily soil intake between medium and low pasture allowance, respectively). In Trial 2, the pasture allowance effect was similar at both supplementation levels. In Trial 2, supplemented cows ate much less soil than unsupplemented cows (0.20 v. 0.75 kg/day, respectively). Differences in soil intake between trials and treatments can be related to grazing conditions, particularly pre-grazing and post-grazing sward height, determining at least in part the time spent grazing close to the ground. A post-grazing sward height lower than 50 mm can be considered as a critical threshold. Finally, a dietary supplement and a low grazing pressure, that is, high pasture allowance increasing post-grazing sward height, would efficiently limit the risk for high level of soil intake, especially when grazing conditions are difficult. Pre-grazing and post-grazing sward heights, as well as faecal crude ash concentration appear to be simple and practical tools for evaluating the risk for critical soil intake in grazing dairy cows.  相似文献
