Current feeder space recommendations in laying hen welfare guidelines are inconsistent among and within countries. One determining criterion forming the recommendations (e.g. 12.0 cm/hen for the EU guideline) is that all birds can feed simultaneously. However, if there are other resources in the environment, as in enriched colony housing (ECH), it is unknown whether group-housed hens will choose to feed simultaneously. This study assesses the impact of feeder space on feeding behavior of 60 laying hens (W-36) in ECH using a ultra-high frequency radio-frequency identification-based tracking system. The feeder spaces investigated were 12.0, 9.5, 8.5 and 6.5 cm/hen, achieved by blocking portions of the overall feeder access to keep hens at the same stocking density. Each feeder space treatment, randomly assigned over the course of the experiment, lasted for 7 consecutive days. Feeding behaviors were characterized as daily time spent at the feeder (TS, min/hen-day), daily frequency of visits to the feeder (FV, #/hen-day), and maximum or average percentage of hens feeding simultaneously (MPB, APB, %). Group-average daily feed intake (FI, g/hen-day), water use (WU, g/hen-day), and hen-day egg production (HDEP, %) were also measured. The results revealed that at 12.0 cm/hen, where unoccupied feeder space was present, a maximum of 59.0±1.4% (average of 31.7±0.3%) hens fed simultaneously. No significant differences were detected among 12.0, 9.5 and 8.5 cm/hen in TS (293±10, 286±10 and 281±10 min/hen-day) and MPB (59.0±1.4, 57.3±1.4 and 53.3±1.4%) (P>0.05). The outcome of no significant differences also held true between 12.0 and 9.5 cm/hen in APB (31.7±0.3 v. 30.8±0.3%) and between 9.5 and 8.5 cm/hen in all response variables measured (P>0.05). However, there were significant differences in APB between 6.5 cm/hen and all other treatments; in TS and FV between 6.5 and 9.5 cm/hen; and in MPB between 6.5 and 12 cm/hen (P<0.05). Considerable inter-hen variability was observed in TS (CV varying from 28.0% to 32.1%) and FV (CV varying from 26.5% to 27.8%). All the feeder spaces tested showed no significant impact on FI, WU or HDEP (P>0.05). The results revealed that synchronous feeding of hens in the ECH did not increase with increasing feeder space. However, it is worth noting that lower feeder space may lead to aggression or frustration which was not quantified in the current study.  相似文献

The effects of histamine on plasma inorganic phosphorus (Pi) and total calcium values were studied in laying hens during egg formation and in non-laying hens. Histamine induced hyperphosphatemia and slight hypocalcemia during eggshell calcification, whereas the most pronounced hypocalcemia was observed during the early stages of egg formation. The histamine-induced hyperphosphatemia was completely inhibited by cimetidine but only partly by promethazine. However, the histamine-induced hypocalcemia was totally inhibited by cimetidine and promethazine.  相似文献

A research about arthropode fauna in laying hen excrement was carried out in a poultry house in the State of S?o Paulo, from January 2001 to December 2002. The objective was to verify the frequency of Diptera and Coleoptera collected by Berlese funil and flutuation methods, and to show correlation between the collect methods and sazonality possible in the currents seasons. A total of 29,499 insects were collected from seventy five collects, being 16,702 Diptera (six families) and 12,797 Coleoptera (four families). Some arthropodes presented direct relation with the collect method, the seasons of the years and the rainfall precipitation, with significant increase in the number of insects collected in certain periods of the year.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to elucidate aspects of the spatial preference of domestic hens kept in battery cages.In the first experiment, 12 hens were given a choice between four cages differing in size and shape. The measure of preference used was the amount of time spent in each cage under free-access conditions. The results show that the hens spent most time in the cage with the largest floor area, but that substantial amounts of time were spent in the remaining three cages. Eight possible explanations for this non-exclusive choice are proposed: variation among hens; change of preference with time; mis-identification; constraints on decision-making; pacing; sampling; monitoring; genuine preference. The first six hypotheses are discussed with respect to this experiment.The second experiment, using 6 hens under similar conditions, was designed to distinguish between the latter two hypotheses. The results suggest there may be a monitoring component to the hens' behaviour in this apparatus, characterised by cage visits of short duration. In addition, the hens may continue to visit small cages in order to perform particular behaviour patterns. Nest-building behaviour is mentioned as one possibility.  相似文献

The ultrastructural changes occurring in the fully functional oviduct of Isa Brown laying hens were studied during various stages of the laying cycle. Hens were killed at different positions of the egg in the oviduct. The oviduct was lined by ciliated and non-ciliated cells (also referred to as granular cells). The granular cells in the infundibulum contributed to secretion during egg formation, whereas ciliated cells showed little evidence of secretion. Ultrastructural changes were recorded in the granular and glandular cells of the distal infundibulum. In the magnum, the surface ultrastructure revealed glandular openings associated with the ciliated and granular cells. Cyclic changes were recorded in the glandular cells of the magnum. With respect to the three observed types of glands, the structure of gland type A and C cells varied at different egg positions in the oviduct, whereas type B cells represented a different type of gland cell containing amorphous secretory granules. The surface epithelium of the isthmus was also lined by mitochondrial cells. Two types of glandular cell (types 1 and 2) were recorded in the isthmus during the laying cycle. Intracisternal granules were found in type 2 cells of the isthmus. A predominance of glycogen particles occurred in the tubular shell gland. The granular cells in the shell gland contain many vacuoles. During egg formation, these vacuoles regressed following the formation of extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum; the reverse also occurred. The disintegrated material found in the vacuoles may have been derived from the disintegrating granules. The Physiology Teaching Unit, University of New England, provided financial support to K. This paper describes a study of the influences of early husbandry conditions, social attraction and social rank on various aspects of the feeding behaviour of laying hens.Birds were raised in flocks of 10, 60 or 500. Groups of 3 birds, selected from flocks of the same size, were then housed in pens. Some groups consisted of hens raised in the same flock, and some of birds raised in different flocks. The feeding and agonistic behaviour of each group at each of 5 types of feeder was observed and compared with the behaviour shown when the birds had free access to a 1-m long food trough. Each of the 5 feeders offered the same area of feeding space, but differed in its partitioning and spatial distribution. One feeder had a single unpartitioned feeding space. The other 4 feeders had 3 partioned feeding spaces which were adjacent, or separated by distances of 10, 20 or 40 cm, respectively.For the 5 feeders, total feeding times and lengths of feeding bouts were greatest, and the number of feeding bouts least, when the feeding space was unpartitioned. Synchrony of feeding behaviour was low when the feeding space was unpartitioned or the partitioned spaces adjacent, but was comparable to that at the 1-m long food trough when the distance between partitioned feeding spaces was 10 cm or greater. When feeding space was partitioned, the likelihood that 2 birds would eat together at the same site increased with the distance between feeding space. Dominant birds always exhibited the longest feeding bouts and greatest total feeding times, but were less likely to feed in the same space as another bird, and exhibited less synchrony of feeding behaviour than subordinates. The size of the flock in which the birds were raised, and whether or not the birds in a group had been raised together or apart, had no clear effect on behaviour.These results indicate that, within the limits of this experiment, early husbandry conditions do not influence behaviour shown during feeding in later life, and that social attraction has a greater influence on the feeding behaviour of hens than is generally assumed. In view of this latter finding, it is postulated that in attempting to determine the requirements of laying hens for feeding space, attention must be paid to social attraction as well as to competition at the feeder.  相似文献

Preference tests were used to assess a range of enrichment options for rats kept under standard New Zealand (and similar) caging conditions. The rats did not show significant preferences for most of the options, over an empty cage. The exceptions were shredded paper, a nesting box and a semi-enriched condition incorporating a range of modifications. These cage modifications are recommended for the enrichment of laboratory rats.  相似文献

Nutrient and drug effects on cholesterol metabolism in the laying hen   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The laying hen is a highly dynamic model for studies of cholesterol metabolism. Cholesterol biosynthesis takes place primarily in the liver where it is regulated by both diet and drugs. Ovarian cholesterol biosynthesis follows a pattern different from that in liver and is not influenced by dietary fat or cholesterol. The hen responds to high levels of dietary polyunsaturated fat by increasing cholesterol biosynthesis, egg cholesterol deposition, and fecal bile acid excretion. Dietary cholesterol curtails liver cholesterol biosynthesis and may or may not result in increased egg cholesterol deposition and/or increased fecal steroid excretion depending on the level of cholesterol intake. Dietary plant sterols and fiber may moderate egg cholesterol deposition but the conditions under which this takes place are not well defined. D-Thyroxin reduces blood cholesterol, increases blood sterol turnover, and increases egg cholesterol concentration. Triparanol and azasterols prevent desmosterol conversion to cholesterol with resultant appearance of both sterols in blood and eggs. Probucol moderates egg cholesterol deposition by reducing synthesis and/or transfer of the sterol to the egg. Implications for the use of the hen in cholesterol metabolism studies are discussed.  相似文献

The functional integrity of the components of the hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian axis was examined in young and old laying hens. Ovarian function was tested by measuring the amount of progesterone released in response to an injection of LH, and pituitary function was investigated by measuring the increase in the plasma LH level after an injection of LH-RH. There were no differences between young and old birds in the response of the pituitary gland or the ovary to these stimuli. Hypothalamic function was investigated by studying the positive feedback action of a standard dose of progesterone on LH release; the positive feedback response was smaller (P less than 0.05) in old hens. It is suggested that the fall in the rate of lay in hens towards the end of their laying year is caused partly by a decrease in the response of the LH-positive feedback mechanism to progesterone.  相似文献
