The length–weight relationships (LWRs) of 11 freshwater fish for eight families (Leporinus friderici, Pterophyllum scalare, Geophagus camopiensis, Curimata incompta, Astyanax bimaculatus, Tetragonopterus chalceus, Moenkhausia lepidura, Metynnis lippincottianus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, Hemiodus unimaculatus and Colomesus asellus) captured in tributary of the Amazon River system (Brazil) were investigated. These results represent the first reference on the LWRs for all 11 species in the eastern Amazon.  相似文献

Potamorhina includes the largest species in the Neotropical fish family Curimatidae. They perform long-distance migrations in large schools and represent relative importance for regional fisheries in South American lowlands. A morphology-based phylogenetic study recognized five species and proposed interspecific phylogenetic relationships mostly based on osteology, squamation, and morphology of the gasbladder. Subsequent cytogenetic studies revealed extreme variability in diploid numbers and other cytomolecular structures and hypothesized multiple events of chromosome rearrangements with centric fissions followed by reversed fusions. However, neither the taxonomic revision and phylogeny nor the cytogenetic hypothesis of chromosome evolution in Potamorhina was tested using molecular phylogenetic approaches. Here, we use mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences to delimit species of Potamorhina with an extensive sampling across the Amazon basin and use phylogenetic methods to test prior hypothesis of multiple events of chromosome rearrangements during the evolution of the genus. Phylogenetic and species delimitation methods clearly support the presence of five species but reveal novel interspecific relationships allowing a reinterpretation of the morphological characters relative to the number of vertebrae, caudal peduncle pigmentation, and modifications in the gasbladder chambers. With the new phylogenetic arrangement, we propose a novel hypothesis of occurrence of a single chromosome fission in the lineage of P. latior followed by an extraordinary event that involved more than 20 chromosome-pair fissions during the evolution of the ancestor of P. altamazonica and P. squamoralevis. This novel hypothesis represents a simpler and more conceivable explanation for the achievement of these elevated chromosome numbers during the evolution of Potamorhina.  相似文献

Plethodontid salamanders of genus Bolitoglossa constitute the largest and most diverse group of salamanders, including around 20% of living caudate species. Recent studies have indicated the occurrence of five recognized species in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. We present here the first cytogenetic data of a Brazilian salamander, which may prove to be a useful by contribution to the cytotaxonomy of the genus. Specimens were collected near the “type” locality (Utinga, Belém, PA, Brazil). Chromosomal preparations from duodenal epithelial cells and testes were subjected to Giemsa staining, C-banding and DAPI/CMA3 fluorochrome staining. All specimens showed a karyotype with 13 bi-armed chromosome pairs (2n = 26). Nucleolar Organizer Regions, evidenced by CMA3, were located distally on the long arm of pair 7 (7q). DAPI+ heterochromatin was predominantly centromeric, with some small pericentromeric bands. Although the C-banding patterns of other Bolitoglossa species are so far unknown, cytogenetic studies conducted in other Plethodontid salamanders have demonstrated that pericentromeric heterochromatin is a useful cytological marker for identifying interspecific homeologies. Species diversification is usually accompanied by chromosomal changes. Therefore, the cytogenetic characterization of Bolitoglossa populations from the middle and western Brazilian Amazon Basin could identify differences which may lead to the identification of new species.  相似文献

The chromosomes of 22 animals of four subspecies of the genus Ateles (A. paniscus paniscus, A. p. chamek, A. belzebuth hybridus, and A. b. marginatus) were compared using G/C banding and NOR (nucleolar organizer region) staining methods. The cytogenetic data of Ateles in the literature were also used to clarify the phylogenetic relationships of the species and subspecies and to infer the routes of radiation and speciation of these taxa. Chromosomes 6 and 7 that showed more informative geographic variation and the apomorphic form 4/12, exclusively in A. p. paniscus, are the keys for understanding the evolution, radiation, and specification of the Ateles taxa. The ancestral populations of the genus originated in the southwestern Amazon Basin (the occurrence area of A. paniscus chamek) and spread in the Amazon Basin and westward, crossing the Andes and colonizing Central America and northwesternmost regions of South America. The evolutionary history of the northern South American taxa is interpreted using the model of biogeographical evolution postulated by Haffer [Science 185:131–137, 1969]. Ateles paniscus paniscus is the genetically most differentiated form and probably derives from A. belzebuth hybridus. Based on the karyotype differences, the populations of Ateles can be divided into four different group. These findings indicate the necessity of a more coherent taxonomic arrangement for the taxa of Ateles. Am. J. Primatol. 42:167–178, 1997. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Synopsis The feeding ecology of three characids (A. fasciatus, A. bimaculatus and A. schubarti) was studied monthly during 1988 in Lake Inferñao, a major floodplain lake of the Mogi-Guaçú River in the State of São Paulo. River flooding directly influenced the diet of the omnivorous A. bimaculatus and A. fasciatus which responded to maximum inundation (March) by consuming predominantly allochthonous insects. In contrast, A. schubarti was less influenced by the river flood cycle on qualitative changes in diet and relied basically on aquatic macrophytes and periphytic algae. The importance of zooplankton in the diet of the three species was low, and may be attributed to its low density in the water column (< 1 ind l–1). Ontogenetic diet changes were evident for the three species. For A. fasciatus and A. bimaculatus the importance of zooplankton was high at the early stages, decreasing with size. A. schubarti at younger stages consumed diversified items which gradually decreased quantitatively up to the size class of 65 mm; from this size onwards, the diet became restricted to the consumption of periphytic algae and macrophytes.  相似文献

Many octopus species consume their prey in a shelter, where discarded prey items accumulate to form a midden. The shelters of Octopus bimaculatus rarely have middens. Some discarded prey items are present at 20% of the shelters of O. bimaculatus, but these do not accumulate to form middens. A field experiment using artificial middens demonstrated that currents and/or surge moved some bivalve shells, and hermit crabs rapidly removed snail shells from the middens. Snails are very important in the diet of O. bimaculatus but not most other octopus species; middens do not form around O. bimaculatus shelters because hermit crabs remove the discarded snail shells.  相似文献

Despite the Amazon Forest being the largest tropical forest in the world, and cradle of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis), no studies have aimed to report the occurrence of mites associated with native trees from this ecosystem. Our survey investigates the phytoseiid mites associated with five species of native rubber trees from nine sites of the Amazon Forest, and also presents a major review of phytoseiid species from natural vegetation in Brazil. We found a total of 1305 mites, belonging to 30 species, of which seven were new to science, Amblydromalus akiri sp. nov., Amblyseius chicomendesi sp. nov., Amblyseius duckei sp. nov., Amblyseius manauara sp. nov., Iphiseiodes katukina sp. nov., Iphiseiodes raucuara sp. nov. and Typhlodromips igapo sp. nov.; beyond two new records for Brazil, Iphiseiodes kamahorae and Amblyseius martus. Our results emphasize the importance of Amazon native trees as an unexplored source of predator mites, which in turn may be further studied as biological control agents of pest mites on rubber trees. The impressive diversity, endemism and rate of new species found highlight the importance of studies on arthropod communities associated with the Amazon vegetation.  相似文献

Brachyplatystoma platynemum is a catfish species widely distributed in the Amazon basin. Despite being considered of little commercial interest, the decline in other fish populations has contributed to the increase in the catches of this species. The structure, population genetic variability, and evolutionary process that have driven the diversification of this species are presently unknown. Considering that, in order to better understand the genetic structure of this species, we analyzed individuals from seven locations of the Amazon basin using eight molecular markers: control region and cytochrome b mtDNA sequences, and a set of six nuclear microsatellite loci. The results show high levels of haplotype diversity and point to the occurrence of two structured populations (Amazon River and the Madeira River) with high values for FST. Divergence time estimates based on mtDNA indicated that these populations diverged about 1.0 Mya (0.2–2.5 Mya 95% HPD) using cytochrome b and 1.4 Mya (0.2–2.7 Mya 95% HPD) using control region. During that time, the influence of climate changes and hydrological events such as sea level oscillations and drainage isolation as a result of geological processes in the Pleistocene may have contributed to the current structure of B. platynemum populations, as well as of differences in water chemistry in Madeira River. The strong genetic structure and the time of genetic divergence estimated for the groups may indicate the existence of strong structure populations of B. platynemum in the Amazon basin.  相似文献

We have isolated 16 microsatellite loci in the field cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus. Nine loci were found to be polymorphic in G. bimaculatus and the number of alleles varied from seven to 14. All 16 loci were tested for amplification in nine other species. In the five species tested belonging to the same subfamily (Gryllinae), a minimum of nine loci amplified. These loci will be used to determine paternity as part of a study to investigate the genetic benefits of polyandry.  相似文献

Reproductive biology of invasive species is not often studied relative to the invasion process, although it may provide an accurate indicator of the invasion stage. We evaluated the reproductive biology of the exotic fish species Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus and Poecilia sphenops in the Teuchitlán River, Jalisco, Mexico by fertility, size at first maturity, sex ratio, gonad maturity stage, gonadosomatic index, condition factor, size‐structure, and habitat. The reproductive variables were related to environmental characteristics using the non‐metric analysis of multidimensional scaling. A total of 1374 specimens of P. bimaculatus and 571 of P. sphenops were captured by seine netting and electrofishing. Maximum fertility of P. bimaculatus was 15.99 ± 2.27 embryonated eggs and embryos and, for P. sphenops, 31.26 ± 4.17. Females predominated among P. bimaculatus, while in P. sphenops the sex ratio was ~1:1. We found mature female and male of P. bimaculatus in degraded sites and juveniles in the springs. Poecilia sphenops reproduced along the river. The establishment of both invasive species in the Teuchitlán River is evidence that they share the reproductive habitat with native fish species, and tend to spread and colonize new areas.  相似文献

We examined the molecular phylogeny and chromosomal features of European Helictotrichon species to explore the relationships within the genus and to investigate the origin of several polyploids. Using both approaches, molecular and cytogenetic, revealed the strong impact of allopolyploidization on genome organization from chromosome structure to sequence level. Our research focused on Mediterranean and endemic species of the Alps. Altogether, the molecular phylogenetic analyses include a sample of 17 Helictotrichon species and subspecies, used DNA sequences from the nuclear ribosomal (nr) internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and the single copy gene topoisomerase 6 (Topo6), and were analysed by maximum parsimony and Bayesian methods. Karyotype structures were investigated by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and fluorochrome banding. Cytogenetic characters were mapped on the combined phylogenetic tree. The absence or comparatively rare occurrence of different ITS sequence types in some (allo-) polyploid species of Helictotrichon suggests frequent intergenomic homogenization of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) loci due to the phenomenon of concerted evolution. This result implies that the ITS region is not an ideal marker to study polyploid evolution of these grasses. The phylogenetic analysis of the Topo6 region revealed three major clades that concur with three different copy types (termed SAR, SET, PAR), representing the major genome groups in Helictotrichon. A comparison of the molecular phylogenetic trees with the chromosome and karyotype structure supports allopolyploidy of several Helictotrichon species and identifies potential genome donors. A correlation between molecular phylogenetic/cytogenetic results and geographic distribution is expressed by a west-east disjunction, in the narrower or wider sense, of the analysed species. While SAR represents a geographically narrowly distributed southwest Mediterranean genome group, PAR and SET are very widespread (Mediterranean to Asia) and encompass several instances of west-east disjunctions.  相似文献

The Tamesí molly, Poecilia latipunctata, has a very limited biogeographical range in northeast Mexico. This area is nested within the ranges of the Atlantic molly, Poecilia mexicana, and the unisexual Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa. Based on morphology, especially fin shape, the Tamesí molly has been considered to be a "short-fin" molly. We describe the courtship sequence of P. latipunctata. The courtship clearly places the species into the clade of "long-fin" mollies, a finding that corroborates earlier studies based on nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA. All three species live together in certain habitats. This renders P. latipunctata a potential host species for the sperm-dependent, unisexual Amazon molly. Using behavioural tests, we demonstrate that P. latipunctata males actually copulate with Amazon mollies, despite a pronounced preference for conspecific females. In laboratory experiments P. latipunctata males are capable of triggering embryogenesis in P. formosa females. Field observations support the hypothesis that P. latipunctata is a third host species for P. formosa, indicating that the Amazon molly effectively exploits all available host species for its gynogenetic mode of reproduction. Hemiodus iratapuru, a new species of the Hemiodontidae from the Rio Iratapuru, a left bank tributary of the Rio Jari, Amazon Basin, Brazil, is described. The new species is diagnosed from other species of Hemiodus by modifications in the ectopterygoid, tooth form, scale counts, dorsal‐fin form and colour pattern. The new species is proposed to be related to the Hemiodus quadrimaculatus species group.  相似文献

This study was performed to explore novel and valuable uses of insect resources, important subjects of the natural compound used in bio‐industries. The whole bodies of two crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus and Teleogryllus emma, selected from medicinal insect species, were carefully ground and treated with 80% EtOH. The insect extracts were solubilized and separated by hexane, butanol, and D.W according to their polarities. Three types of extracts, a D.W fraction (G1) and a boiling extract (G2) of an introduced cricket, G. bimaculatus, and a D.W fraction (T1) of a Korean local cricket, T. emma, were prepared to assay immune stimulating activity of cricket originated compounds. The all of three treated cricket extracts showed to increase IL‐4, IFN‐, and TNF‐α. Among those extract, extract G2, boiled extract from G. bimaculatus, was the best immune–enhancing fraction. The results of this study could be fundamental information for further works to use insects as natural resources having plenty of potentials and varieties.  相似文献

A cytogenetic study on eight species of the genus Prochilodus, family Prochilodontidae, from different hydrographic basins of Brazil is reported. All species had a diploid number of 2n=54 and NF=108. Supernumerary heterochromatic chromosomes of variable frequency were detected in Prochilodus scrofa and in P. cearensis. To determine the occurrence and frequency of the supernumerary chromosomes in P. scrofa, specimens from different localities belonging to the basin of the Paraná river were analysed. The high karyotypic similarity detected demonstrated that, at least in these eight species, evolution occurred without marked changes in chromosome macrostructure.  相似文献

Neotropical diving beetles of the genus Platynectes are distributed across Central America, the Andes and different Precambrian shields in the Amazon Basin. Species from the northern Guiana Shield form a monophyletic clade, yet the phylogenetic relationships of the eastern Atlantic Shield species remain unknown. Here, we augmented an existing molecular dataset with a species from the Atlantic Shield that was not previously sampled. We reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships and estimated divergence times to understand the evolution of lineages dwelling in this region. The newly sampled specimens from the Atlantic Shield are recovered as sister taxa to Guiana Shield species. The dating analyses suggest a split between these two lineages in the late Oligocene to mid-Miocene, contemporary with the Miocenic geological remodeling of the Amazon Basin. Additional sampling in the Atlantic and Central Brazilian Shields will be determinant to test the monophyly of Platynectes species distributed in these ancient shields, and to fully understand the biogeographical history of diving beetles in the Amazon Basin.  相似文献

The coccidians of the family Calyptosporidae are parasites of the tissue and organs of fish and aquatic invertebrates, in particular in the tropical region. In contrast with other apicomplexans of the suborder Eimeriorina, the diversity and ecology of the species of the genus Calyptospora have been poorly investigated, resulting in a lacuna that restricts the understanding of the distribution and prevalence of this group of eukaryote microparasites in the Amazon region. In the present study, the integrated comparative analysis of morphological characteristics, histological and structural traits, and the sequences of a fragment of the 18S rRNA gene, provides support for the identification of a new species of Calyptospora, found parasitizing the hepatic tissue of the piscivorous blue peacock bass, Cichla piquiti, captured in the reservoir of the Estreito hydroelectric dam on the middle Tocantins River in northern Brazil. This new species was named Calyptospora paranaidji n. sp.  相似文献

Aquatic herbaceous macrophytes grow in profusion in the Amazon fertile varzea floodplains. A large number of species occur but only a few are particularly abundant, supporting food chains, contributing substantially to carbon and nutrient cycles. Their growth and role in the ecosystem depend, among other, on its life cycles and habits, floating or semi-aquatic. Although in the last decades, petroliferous activity intensified in the Central Amazon region and so did oil spills, the effect of petroleum on the native aquatic plants is unknown. The present study was designed to test experimentally the survival and morpho-anatomical modifications of the free floating water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes and the semi-aquatic grass Echinochloa polystachya to 10 different concentrations of crude oil. Higher concentrations of crude oil caused the mortality in both species; however, lethal dose (LD50) values showed that E. polystachya was more sensitive than E. crassipes. Despite the higher tolerance of E. crassipes, the inhibition of root and leaf growth as well as anatomical modifications in leaves were registered in higher concentrations. Additionally, the oil caused a reduction in leaf numbers in both species. Although mortality of the floating species was lower, it may increases over time, since important alterations in morphology and anatomy occurred. These results show that oil spills in the Amazon varzea can cause severe alterations in the aquatic flora and in the floodplain dynamics.  相似文献
