The invasion by Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) of the western Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico is emerging as a major threat to coral reef communities across the region. Comparing native and introduced populations of invasive species can reveal shifts in ecology and behaviour that can accompany successful invasions. Using standardized field surveys replicated at multiple sites in Kenya and the Bahamas, we present the first direct comparisons of lionfish density, body size, biomass and behaviour between native and invaded coral reefs. We found that lionfish occur at higher densities with larger body sizes and total biomass on invaded Bahamian coral reefs than the ecologically equivalent species (P. miles) does on native Kenyan reefs. However, the combined average density of the five lionfish species (Pterois miles, P. antennata, P. radiata, Dendrochirus brachypterus and D. zebra) on Kenyan reefs was similar to the density of invasive lionfish in the Bahamas. Understanding the ecological processes that drive these differences can help inform the management and control of invasive lionfish.  相似文献

Biotic resistance, the process by which new colonists are excluded from a community by predation from and/or competition with resident species, can prevent or limit species invasions. We examined whether biotic resistance by native predators on Caribbean coral reefs has influenced the invasion success of red lionfishes (Pterois volitans and Pterois miles), piscivores from the Indo-Pacific. Specifically, we surveyed the abundance (density and biomass) of lionfish and native predatory fishes that could interact with lionfish (either through predation or competition) on 71 reefs in three biogeographic regions of the Caribbean. We recorded protection status of the reefs, and abiotic variables including depth, habitat type, and wind/wave exposure at each site. We found no relationship between the density or biomass of lionfish and that of native predators. However, lionfish densities were significantly lower on windward sites, potentially because of habitat preferences, and in marine protected areas, most likely because of ongoing removal efforts by reserve managers. Our results suggest that interactions with native predators do not influence the colonization or post-establishment population density of invasive lionfish on Caribbean reefs.  相似文献

Food consumption, growth and the ability to withstand starvation were studied in two species of predominantly piscivorous predatory lionfishes from the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea: Dendrochirus brachypterus a small-bodied species, 35–40 g body weight, and Pterois volitans, 1.10–1.20 kg body weight. In experimental conditions, the biomass consumed by D. brachypterus was 0.8–1.1 g day-1 in juveniles of 10–20 g body weight and 3.0–5.0 g day-1 in adults of 35–40 g. P. volitans consumed 5.5–13.5 g day-1 as juveniles, and 14.6 g day-1 when adults of 300–500 g body weight. The growth trajectories of both species are parallel until they attain 20–25 g body weight. From this point on, growth in the maturing D. brachypterus nears asymptotic, while Pterois continue their exponential increase up to 70–80 g body weight. With age, the efficiency of food conversion, indexed by the condition (K) factor, is low (from 0.46 in young fish to 0.22 in adults), as most of their food energy is channeled towards maintenance. In nature, larger Pterois of 300–400 g body weight, consume about 8.5 g day-1, amounting to 3.10 kg yr-1; for 80 fish inhabiting a 1 km long reef, this totals approximately 228.48 kg yr-1. Starvation experiments in these fishes produced a clear correlation between their initial weight and their ability to withstand prolonged fasting: D. brachypterus lost 12–33% body weight within 7 weeks, and the larger Pterois lost only 5–16% within 3 months. I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of early maturation as well as small size versus large size, and delayed maturation in these two closely-related predatory fishes. Experiments with naive adult lionfish showed that their selection of prey species is a learned process, vital to survival during growth in the prey-fishes' rich habitat of coral reefs.  相似文献

This study investigates the molecular phylogeny of seven lionfishes of the genera Dendrochirus and Pterois. MP, ML, and NJ phylogenetic analysis based on 964 bp of partial mitochondrial DNA sequences (cytochrome b and 16S rDNA) revealed two main clades: (1) “Pterois” clade (Pterois miles and Pterois volitans), and (2) “Pteropterus–Dendrochirus” clade (remainder of the sampled species). The position of Dendrochirus brachypterus either basal to the main clades or in the “Pteropterus–Dendrochirus” clade cannot be resolved. However, the molecular phylogeny did not support the current separation of the genera Pterois and Dendrochirus. The siblings P. miles and P. volitans are clearly separated and our results support the proposed allopatric or parapatric distribution in the Indian and Pacific Ocean. However, the present analysis cannot reveal if P. miles and P. volitans are separate species or two populations of a single species, because the observed separation in different clades can be either explained by speciation or lineage sorting. Molecular clock estimates for the siblings P. miles and P. volitans suggest a divergence time of 2.4–8.3 mya, which coincide with geological events that created vicariance between populations of the Indian and Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Coral communities at Moorea, French Polynesia, and on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia, were severely depleted by disturbances early in the 1980s. Corals were killed by the predatory starfish Acanthaster planci, by cyclones, and/or by depressed sea level. This study compares benthic community structure and coral population structures on three disturbed reefs (Vaipahu-Moorea; Rib and John Brewer Reefs-GBR) and one undisturbed reef (Davies Reef-GBR) in 1987–89. Moorea barrier reefs had been invaded by tall macrophytes Turbinaria ornata and Sargassum sp., whereas the damaged GBR reefs were colonised by a diverse mixture of short macrophytes, turfs and coralline algae. The disturbed areas had broadly similar patterns of living and dead standing coral, and similar progress in recolonisation, which suggests their structure may converge towards that of undisturbed Davies Reef. Corals occupying denuded areas at Vaipahu, Rib and John Brewer were small (median diameter 5 cm in each case) and sparse (means 4–8 m-2) compared to longer established corals at Davies Reef (median diameter 9 cm; mean 18 m-2). At Moorea, damselfish and sea urchins interacted with corals in ways not observed in the GBR reefs. Territories of the damselfish Stegastes nigricans covered much of Moorea's shallow reef top. They had significantly higher diversity and density of post-disturbance corals than areas outside of territories, suggesting that the damselfish exerts some influences on coral community dynamics. Sea urchins on Moorea (Diadema setosum Echinometra mathaei, Echinotrix calamaris) were causing widespread destruction of dead standing coral skeletons. Overall, it appears that the future direction and speed of change in the communities will be explicable more in terms of local than regional processes.  相似文献

During a survey of the population of blacktip reef shark Carcharhinus melanopterus in Moorea (French Polynesia) between 2007 and 2011, population structural characteristics were estimated from 268 individuals. Total length (LT) ranged from 48 to 139 cm and 48 to 157 cm for males and females, respectively, demonstrating that the average LT of females was larger than that of males. The C. melanopterus population at Moorea showed an apparent spatial sexual segregation with females preferentially frequenting lagoons and males the fore‐reefs. Mean growth rate was c. 6 cm year?1. Males reached sexual maturity at 111 cm LT. This study reports on the population characteristics of this widespread carcharhinid shark species and makes comparisons with other locations, confirming high geographic variability in the population structure of the species.  相似文献

To facilitate future assessments of diversity following disturbance events, we conducted a first level inventory of nocturnal Lepidoptera in Stanley Park, Vancouver, Canada. To aid the considerable task, we employed high-throughput DNA barcoding for the rough sorting of all material and for tentative species identifications, where possible. We report the preliminary species list of 190, the detection of four new exotic species (Argyresthia pruniella, Dichelia histrionana, Paraswammerdamia lutarea, and Prays fraxinella), and the potential discovery of two cryptic species. We describe the magnitude of assistance that barcoding presents for faunal inventories, from reducing specialist time to facilitating the detection of native and exotic species at low density.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Numerous techniques have been proposed to estimate carnivore abundance and density, but few have been validated against populations of known size. We used a density estimate established by intensive monitoring of a population of radiotagged leopards (Panthera pardus) with a detection probability of 1.0 to evaluate efficacy of track counts and camera-trap surveys as population estimators. We calculated densities from track counts using 2 methods and compared performance of 10 methods for calculating the effectively sampled area for camera-trapping data. Compared to our reference density (7.33 ± 0.44 leopards/100 km2), camera-trapping generally produced more accurate but less precise estimates than did track counts. The most accurate result (6.97 ± 1.88 leopards/100 km2) came from camera-trap data with a sampled area buffered by a boundary strip representing the mean maximum distance moved by leopards outside the survey area (MMDMOSA) established by telemetry. However, contrary to recent suggestions, the traditional method of using half the mean maximum distance moved from photographic recaptures did not result in gross overestimates of population density (6.56 ± 1.92 leopards/100 km2) but rather displayed the next best performance after MMDMOSA. The only track-count method comparable to reference density employed a capture-recapture framework applied to data when individuals were identified from their tracks (6.45 ± 1.43 leopards/100 km2) but the underlying assumptions of this technique limit more widespread application. Our results demonstrate that if applied correctly, camera-trap surveys represent the best balance of rigor and cost-effectiveness for estimating abundance and density of cryptic carnivore species that can be identified individually.  相似文献

Ceratopteris thalictroides (L.) Brongn is a tetraploid fern species that contains at least three cryptic species, the south, the north and the third type. In this study we combined data from both chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and nuclear DNA sequences of three diploid species and three cryptic species of C. thalictroides to unravel the origin of the cryptic species, particularly of the reticulate relationships among the diploid and tetraploid taxa in the genus Ceratopteris. Of the three diploid species examined, C. cornuta had cpDNA identical to that of the tetraploid third type plants, and this diploid species is a possible maternal ancestor of the tetraploid third type. Analysis of the homologue of the Arabidopsis thaliana LEAFY gene (CLFY1) identified ten alleles in the genus Ceratopteris, with six alleles found in C. thalictroides. The unrooted tree of the CLFY1 gene revealed four clusters. Each cryptic species showed fixed heterozygosity at the CLFY1 locus and had two alleles from different clusters of the CLFY1 tree. Consideration of the cpDNA sequences, CLFY1 genotypes of the cryptic species and CLFY1 gene tree in concert suggested that the cryptic species of C. thalictroides had originated through independent allopolyploidization events involving C. cornuta and two unknown hypothetical diploid species.  相似文献

Microhabitat use by the larvae of two cryptic lamprey species in Lethenteron reissneri, Lethenteron sp. N (northern form) and Lethenteron sp. S (southern form) larvae, as well as intraspecific variations on a size-related basis, were examined in a study area (500 × 5 m) located on a stream where they showed sympatric distribution. The total number of individuals collected from each of 31 quadrats (60 × 60 cm) ranged from 0 (0 n/m2) to 13 (36.1 n/m2). The distinct difference in habitat use was not observed between the two species in the present study area. Lamprey density was not significantly independent among the size groups (small and large) for each of Lethenteron sp. N and Lethenteron sp. S. The density of each size group of the two species was significantly correlated with some habitat variables, and stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed a positive association for a substrate with a smaller particle size and deeper depth for large individuals of Lethenteron sp. N and Lethenteron sp. S, respectively, suggesting that these conditions would be suitable for burrowing. On the other hand, small individuals of both species tended to occur in areas where there was a high content of medium sand and a faster current velocity, probably reflecting a preference for respiratory efficiency. Various condition of habitat should be maintained to conserve the cryptic lampreys.  相似文献

Successful invasions are largely explained by some combination of enemy release, where the invader escapes its natural enemies from its native range, and low biotic resistance, where native species in the introduced range fail to control the invader. We examined the extent to which parasites may mediate both release and resistance in the introduction of Pacific red lionfish (Pterois volitans) to Atlantic coral reefs. We found that fewer lionfish were parasitized at two regions in their introduced Atlantic range (The Bahamas and the Cayman Islands) than at two regions in their native Pacific range (the Northern Marianas Islands and the Philippines). This pattern was largely driven by relatively high infection rates of lionfish by didymozoan fluke worms and parasitic copepods (which may be host-specific to Pterois lionfishes) in the Marianas and the Philippines, respectively. When compared with sympatric, native fishes in the Atlantic, invasive lionfish were at least 18 times less likely to host a parasite in The Bahamas and at least 40 times less likely to host a parasite in the Cayman Islands. We found no indication that lionfish introduced Pacific parasites into the Atlantic. In conjunction with demographic signs of enemy release such as increased density, fish size, and growth of invasive lionfish, it is possible that escape from parasites may have contributed to the success of lionfish. This is especially true if future studies reveal that such a loss of parasites has led to more energy available for lionfish growth, reproduction, and/or immunity.  相似文献

Anopheles culicifacies, the principal vector of malaria in India, is a complex of five cryptic species which are morphologically indistinguishable at any stage of life. In view of the practical difficulties associated with classical cytotaxonomic method for the identification of members of the complex, an allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (ASPCR) assay targeted to the D3 domain of 28S ribosomal DNA was developed. The assay discriminatesAn. culicifacies species A and D from species B, C and E. The assay was validated using chromosomally-identified specimens ofAn. culicifacies from different geographical regions of India representing different sympatric associations. The assay correctly differentiates species A and D from species B, C and E. The possible use of this diagnostic assay in disease vector control programmes is discussed.  相似文献

Plasmids were isolated from two species ofStreptosporangium by CsCl-ethidium bromide equilibrium density gradient centrifugation. A plasmid isolated fromS. brasiliense, designated pSgB-1, was characterized by electron microscopy and agarose gel electrophoresis. The pSgB-1 plasmid is a closed circular DNA molecule of 9.4 × 106 Da. A restriction endonuclease map was generated and unique cleavage sites were found forEcoRI, ClaI, XbaI, and MstII. Another plasmid, pSgV-1, isolated fromS. viriodogriseum, has an estimatedMr of 54 × 106. The pSgB-1 plasmid is phenotypically cryptic but an unusual phenotypic trait, resembling phage plaques, may be associated with theS. viridogriseum plasmid pSgV-1.  相似文献

This report documents primate communities at two sites within Noel Kempff Mercado National Park in northeastern Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia. Diurnal line transects and incidental observations were employed to survey two field sites, Lago Caiman and Las Gamas, providing information on primate diversity, habitat preferences, relative abundance, and population density. Primate diversity at both sites was not particularly high, with six observed species: Callithrix argentata melanura, Aotus azarae, Cebus apella, Alouatta caraya, A. Seniculus, and Ateles paniscus chamek. Cebus showed no significant habitat preferences at Lago Caiman and was also more generalist in use of forest strata, whereas Ateles clearly preferred the upper levels of structurally tall forest. Callithrix argentata melanura was rarely encountered during surveys at Lago Caiman, where it preferred low vine forest. Both species of Alouatta showed restricted habitat use and were sympatric in Igapo forest in the Lago Caiman area. The most abundant primate at both field sites was Ateles, with density estimates reaching 32.1 individuals/km2 in the lowland forest at Lago Caiman, compared to 14.1 individuals/km2 for Cebus. Both Ateles and Cebus were absent from smaller patches of gallery forest at Las Gamas. These densities are compared with estimates from other Neotropical sites. The diversity of habitats and their different floristic composition may account for the numerical dominance of Ateles within the primate communities at both sites. Am. J. Comparative surveys of bird species richness and abundance showed that a total of 69 bird species was recorded on 1 km transects (n = 996) through shrubland, with a total estimated density of birds of 32.7 ± 32.8 (S.D.) birds/km2, of which resident birds made up 24.4 ± 21.0 birds/km2, nomads made up 1.9 ± 11.7 birds/km2 and local nomads made up 6.3 ± 20.1 birds/km2. There was no correlation in general between total bird numbers or total bird biomass and rain, but numbers and biomass of nomads showed the strongest correlations with rainfall two months previously. A total of 86 species was recorded on 276 surveys along a 1 km stretch of drainage line woodland. Species richness varied from an average of about nine species to 24 species each month, and only showed a marked change during the 'dry' period of 1990 to early 1991. Density of birds in this woodland was 59.2 ± 20.8 birds/km. Biomass of birds was relatively constant throughout the study period, with marked increases in certain months when large species were present.  相似文献

The integration of different characters (e.g. morphological, ecological, and molecular) is now recognized as important in species delimitation. In particular, genetic distances between homologous genes have been suggested as one of the main tools to identify species, especially in the case of cryptic species. Quinchamalium is morphologically variable and occupies a diverse set of biomes across its distribution in the Southern Andes. Recent work based on morphology has synonymized the entire genus as a single morphospecies, Quinchamalium chilense. This widely distributed taxon presents the opportunity to find potential cryptic species. The main objective of this study was to test the existence of cryptic species, based mainly on phylogenetic gene trees, genetic distances, and geographic patterns of haplotypes from molecular markers of the nuclear (ITS) and chloroplast (trnL-F) genomes, considering climatic and morphological characteristics. The ITS phylogeny and corresponding haplotype network resulted in three lineages with strong genetic differentiation and distinct geographic patterns. These lineages were informally named Desert, Matorral, and Mountain, based on their geographic distribution in different biomes. The trnL-F chloroplast phylogeny did not distinguish Desert from Matorral, and the haplotype network showed overlap between these last two lineages. Overall, we hypothesize the existence of two cryptic species within Quinchamalium chilense (Mountain and Matorral–Desert) that correspond to genetic, climatic, and morphological differences.  相似文献

In various studies encompassing large spatiotemporal scales, the densities of non-indigenous species and indigenous species in the same habitat increased and decreased, respectively, prior to reaching an equilibrium. We examined whether this is true for a non-indigenous mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, introduced into Japan before 1934, and the sympatric indigenous bivalves: Septifer virgatus, Septifer bilocularis, Hormomya mutabilis, Saccostrea kegaki, Saccostrea mordax and Barbatia (Savignyarca) virescens. Seven quadrat surveys during 1978–2006 on 19 rocky shores (26.6–41.4°N) showed unexpected results. Density of M. galloprovincialis decreased on 89% of the shores where this mussel had previously been found. In contrast, densities of the indigenous bivalves decreased on lower percentages (17–71%) of shores where the bivalves had been found. Shore-to-shore mean density of M. galloprovincialis decreased from the 1970s (27.0–88.7 m−2) to the 2000s (0.0–1.1 m−2), more sharply than any of the indigenous bivalves (from 4.6–9.1 m−2 to 0.7–1.5 m−2 for S. bilocularis, which showed the most marked reduction). The conspicuous decrease for M. galloprovincialis suggests that some factors on the studied shores have become disadvantageous especially for this non-indigenous mussel from the earlier to the later surveys.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships and species boundaries of Australian burrowing freshwater crayfish belonging to the genera Engaeus, Engaewa, Geocharax, Gramastacus and Tenuibranchiurus are investigated using combined mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data and Bayesian and Maximum Parsimony methods. Phylogenies are statistically compared to previously published hypotheses. Engaeus, Engaewa, Geocharax, Gramastacus and Tenuibranchiurus form a strongly supported monophyletic clade. This grouping is independently supported by morphology but unites geographically highly disjunct lineages. Our data show two cryptic species in Geocharax, one cryptic species in Gramastacus and two cryptic species within the highly divergent Engaeus lyelli lineage. Using a Bayesian relaxed molecular clock method, the 16S rDNA data show generic-level diversification coinciding with the transition from a wet to arid palaeoclimate near the mid Miocene.  相似文献

Recent molecular approaches to taxonomy have led to a steady increase in the identification of cryptic species. Within the Etheriidae, the species Etheria elliptica (freshwater oyster) is widespread and common and exists in most of the major African drainages. Within the African freshwater ecosystems, there are major threats to biodiversity and cryptic species complicate conservation strategies; unknown species exist and no conservation status has been assigned. Our objective here was to determine if E. elliptica from several locations in the Congo drainage are correctly classified as representing a single species. We analysed the genetic diversity at two mitochondrial loci (COI and 16S) and two nuclear loci (H3 and 28S), and estimated evolutionary relationships using phylogenetic and DNA barcoding techniques. Bayesian inference yielded three cryptic species of Etheria, and mismatch analysis revealed discrete differences between the cryptic species. We identified three cryptic species within these collections, and evidence indicates that the third species may resolve further with more sampling. In conclusion, the taxonomic history of E. elliptica makes finding cryptic species unsurprising. However, molecular studies such as this may finally help to resolve the number of species within this genus.  相似文献
