In mid-May 2022, pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha smolts were caught in the rivers Botnsá, Grímsá, and Langá in Iceland. This observation provides the first evidence of successful spawning and the completion of the freshwater phase of the life cycle in Icelandic rivers. It is the most western record of O. gorbuscha smolts in Europe, further west than Russia, Norway, and the UK. Smolts originating from Iceland potentially support the recruitment of this species in the North Atlantic and may lead to the establishment of a self-sustaining population in Iceland.  相似文献

The morphological and morphometrical changes in the renal proximal tubular cells of the salmonOncorhynchus gorbuscha during spawning migration are described for the first time. The evaluation of the ultrastructural changes in the kidney of the adult humpback salmon allows concluding that the proximal tubular cells are affected by significant osmotic loads during spawning migration. Various destructive processes in the proximal tubular cells indicate a decrease of their functional activity in the fresh water. The analysis of the results of the study of the humpback salmon kidney ultrastructure during the anadromous migration allow suggesting that reduction of the amount of the most active cell organelles in the proximal tubule, such as mitochondria and the basolateral membrane system, is associated with a decrease of the number of ion pumps that operate less intensively in the fresh water. Such mechanism of the kidney functioning in the euryhaline fish appears to be formed in the course of evolution as an adaptation to the freshwater environment. The morphological and morphometrical changes in the proximal tubules of nephrons were described for the first time in Pacific salmon smoltsOncorhynchus keta, O. gorbuscha,O. Kisutch, andO. masou in environments with different salinity. The most marked response to the transfer to the sea water or to the calcium-enriched sea water was observed in the chum salmon smolts. In 48 h, the tubular diameter reached its peak, more than 72 μm, the tubular lumen also was very large, while the epithelium height was only slightly greater than that in the fresh water control. In spite of the considerable morphological changes, as soon as in 24 h (the Ca2+-enriched sea water) and in 48 h (the sea water) the ion content in smolt carcasses was within the physiological norm for the environment with enhanced salinity. These results indicate a high efficiency of the osmoregulatory system in smolts during their transfer from the fresh to the sea water.  相似文献

The recent, rapid spreading of non-native pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha in the North Atlantic area has raised concerns about their possible negative impacts on native salmonid species. Potential interactions include competition for food resources during the short freshwater phase of juvenile O. gorbuscha, but little is known about their feeding behavior in the newly occupied North Atlantic rivers. Using stable isotope and stomach content analyses, patterns of freshwater feeding of non-native O. gorbuscha fry were studied in a large Fennoscandian river, the Teno, that discharges to the Barents Sea. Changes in stable isotope values (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) and stomach contents from the period of emergence (April to mid-May) to estuarine entry (late May/June) were examined and provided both temporally integrated and short-term indicators of freshwater feeding dependency. In addition, the occurrence of juvenile O. gorbuscha and changes in their length and weight during their emergence/migration period were investigated. Juvenile O. gorbuscha were at the spawning grounds from April through to mid-May with abundance peaking in mid-May. Fish moved to the estuary by late May and their abundance decreased toward June, and their body size increased concurrently. Stomach analyses indicated no feeding activity in April–early May in the spawning areas, but the stomach fullness indices increased markedly in fish sampled in the estuary in May and June. The most important prey items in stomachs were Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera larvae. Significant changes in all analysed stable isotopes were detected among sample periods, with a peak in mid-May and June showing significantly lower values than other sample periods. A change from the higher values reflective of parental marine feeding to the lower values reflective of freshwater feeding indicated active in-river feeding by juveniles during the study period. The documented active freshwater feeding of non-native juvenile O. gorbuscha suggests potential resource competition with native fluvial fishes, particularly salmonids.  相似文献

Stomach contents were collected and analysed from 22 bull trout Salvelinus confluentus at the edge of the Chilko Lake and Chilko River in British Columbia, Canada, during spring outmigration of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka smolts. Twenty of the 22 (>90%) stomachs contained prey items, virtually all identifiable prey items were outmigrant O. nerka smolts and stomach contents represented a large portion (0·0–12·6%) of estimated S. confluentus mass. The results demonstrate nearly exclusive and intense feeding by S. confluentus on outmigrant smolts, and support recent telemetry observations of high disappearance rates of O. nerka smolts leaving large natural lake systems prior to entering high‐order unregulated river systems.  相似文献

The state of steroid-secreting cells in fingerlings of the pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, chum salmon O. keta, and salmon trout O. masou just before their release from fish farms, as well as the state of gonads in juvenile O. gorbuscha reared in the Ichthyology Laboratory of the Biological Research Institute of St. Petersburg University were studied. It was established that the state of steroid-secreting cells in juveniles of all three species considerably differs. In males and females of the same ages, different trends were revealed indicating that the extent of the development of ultrastructure in these cells is related to age in males and to the rate of growth of oocytes in the period of previtollogenesis in females.  相似文献

The congruence between molecular markers, identifying the presence of the Y chromosome, and secondary sexual characters was examined in Asian populations of five Pacific salmon species: pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), chum salmon (O. keta), sockeye salmon (O. nerka), chinook salmon (O. tschawytscha), and sima (O. masou). It was demonstrated that in all species examined, the presence or absence of sex-specific molecular markers was to a considerable degree congruent with secondary sexual characters, but in some cases, an incongruence was found. These findings suggested that the mechanism underlying this phenomenon was similar or identical in all species examined. Possible genetic and physiological explanations of this phenomenon are discussed.  相似文献

Salinity tolerance in wild (Glendale) and hatchery (Quinsam) pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (average mass 0·2 g) was assessed by measuring whole body [Na+] and [Cl?] after 24 or 72 h exposures to fresh water (FW) and 33, 66 or 100% sea water (SW). Gill Na+, K+‐ATPase activity was measured following exposure to FW and 100% SW and increased significantly in both populations after a 24 h exposure to 100% SW. Whole body [Na+] and whole body [Cl?] increased significantly in both populations after 24 h in 33, 66 and 100% SW, where whole body [Cl?] differed significantly between Quinsam and Glendale populations. Extending the seawater exposure to 72 h resulted in no further increases in whole body [Na+] and whole body [Cl?] at any salinity, but there was more variability among the responses of the two populations. Per cent whole body water (c. 81%) was maintained in all groups of fish regardless of salinity exposure or population, indicating that the increase in whole body ion levels may have been related to maintaining water balance as no mortality was observed in this study. Thus, both wild and hatchery juvenile O. gorbuscha tolerated abrupt salinity changes, which triggered an increase in gill Na+, K+‐ATPase within 24 h. These results are discussed in terms of the preparedness of emerging O. gorbuscha for the marine phase of their life cycle.  相似文献

The downstream migration of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salarL.) and sea trout smolt (S. trutta L.) was investigated using radio telemetry in the spring of 1999 and 2000. Forty wild sea trout smolts, 20 F1 sea trout smolts, 20 hatchery salmon smolts and 20 salmon smolts from river stockings were radio tagged and released in the Danish River Lilleaa. The downstream migration of the different groups of fish was monitored by manual tracking and by three automatic listening stations. The downstream migration of radio tagged smolts of both species occurred concurrently with their untagged counterparts. The diel migration pattern of the radio tagged smolts was predominantly nocturnal in both species. Wild sea trout smolt migrated significantly faster than both the F1 trout and the introduced salmon. There was no correlation between net ground speed, gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity or fish length in any of the different groups. The migration speed of wild sea trout smolts was positively correlated with water discharge in both years. In F1 sea trout smolts, migration speed was positively correlated with temperature in 1999. The migration speed of salmon smolts did not correlate to any of the investigated parameters.  相似文献

This study investigated the development of hypo‐osmoregulatory capacity and timing of downstream migration in wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts from the River Stjørdalselva and stocked young‐of‐the‐year (YOY), derived S. salar smolts from the tributary River Dalåa. Both wild and stocked S. salar smolts developed seawater (SW) tolerance in early May, persisting through June, measured as their ability to regulate plasma osmolality and chloride following 24 h SW (salinity = 35) exposure. Although the majority of downstream migration among the stocked S. salar smolts occurred later than observed in their wild counterparts, the development of SW tolerance occurred concurrently. The wild S. salar from Stjørdalselva and stocked YOY smolts from the River Dalåa started to migrate on the same cumulative day‐degrees (D°). The study revealed no downstream migration before development of SW tolerance. This emphasizes the importance of incorporating physiological status when studying environmental triggers for downstream migration of S. salar smolts. Overall, these findings suggest that the onset of smolt migration in stocked S. salar smolts was within the smolt window from an osmoregulatory point of view.  相似文献

Despite satisfactory reactions to seawater challenge tests indicative of appropriate physiological state, hatchery‐reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts stocked in the Eira River in Norway between 2001 and 2011 performed less well at sea in terms of growth, age at maturity and survival than smolts of natural origin. The mean rates of return to the river for hatchery‐reared and naturally produced S. salar were 0·98 and 2·35%. In the Eira River, c. 50 000 hatchery‐reared S. salar smolts of local origin were stocked annually to compensate for reduced natural smolt production following regulation for hydroelectric purposes, while a mean of 17 262 smolts were produced naturally in the river. This study demonstrates that, although captive S. salar perform well in seawater challenge tests, hatchery‐reared smolts are not necessarily as adaptable to marine life as their naturally produced counterparts. These findings suggest that production of hatchery‐reared smolts more similar to naturally produced individuals in morphology, physiology and behaviour will be necessary to improve success of hatchery releases. Where possible, supplementary or alternative measures, including habitat restoration, could be implemented to ensure the long‐term viability of wild stocks.  相似文献

Juvenile sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka that were reared and smolted in laboratory conditions were found to produce otolith daily increments, as well as a consistently visible marine‐entry check formed during their transition to salt water. Field‐collected O. nerka post‐smolts of an equivalent age also displayed visible checks; however, microchemistry estimates of marine‐entry date using Sr:Ca ratios differed from visual estimates by c. 9 days suggesting that microstructural and microchemical processes occur on different time scales.  相似文献

A new monitoring programme on the Lough Neagh catchment has documented a high incidence of river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis L., predation on Atlantic salmon smolts, Salmo salar L. In total 470 smolts were examined during the 2020 emigration period with 168 fish (36%) exhibiting lamprey scars of which 57 were lightly scarred and 111 were classed as heavily scarred. Lamprey predation was not size selective on Lough Neagh S. salar smolts.  相似文献

  1. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts are often stocked into rivers to supplement natural reproduction, yet hatchery-reared fish have lower survival compared to wild conspecifics. However, few studies have assessed riverine migratory performance and survival differences in hatchery and wild smolts, or more specifically naturally reared smolts (hatchery fish released earlier as parr), particularly in rivers with weirs which may further reduce survival.
  2. Using acoustic telemetry, including a subset of fish with novel transmitters that identify predation events, we assessed survival and migration patterns of hatchery- (2017: n = 32; 2018: n = 30) and naturally reared Atlantic salmon smolts (2017: n = 8; 2018: n = 30) in a Lake Ontario tributary with two weirs to better understand their ecology and assess the influence of environmental parameters on migration.
  3. Naturally reared smolts were 13.9 times more likely to survive than hatchery-reared smolts and mark–recapture models indicated that weirs did not reduce survival for either group. Survival per km was lowest at the release site, indicating pre-migration mortality, and specifically high stocking-related mortality of hatchery-reared smolts. Speed and times of day fish migrated (i.e. migratory performance) did not vary by rearing group, suggesting that the high mortality of hatchery-reared smolts may be due to other factors related to hatchery and stocking operations. Overall mean (± SD) migration speed for smolts was 0.70 ± 0.39 km/hr and movements occurred significantly more frequently at night (18:00–06:00).
  4. Smolts were detected in Lake Ontario after they left the river; however, the array in Lake Ontario was not conducive to providing much detail regarding movement patterns. There was no predation of the two predation tags detected in Lake Ontario, indicating that movements were made by smolts and not predators.
  5. With ongoing restoration efforts of Atlantic salmon in Lake Ontario, it was important to understand the smolt migration patterns and success of the stocked fish. Our findings of similar migratory performance yet different relative survival of hatchery- and naturally reared smolts help inform management with regards to stocking strategies that could improve Atlantic salmon reintroduction success.

Swimming performance was assessed in juvenile pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (body mass <5·0 g) using five different protocols: four constant acceleration tests each with a different acceleration profile (rates of 0·005, 0·011, 0·021 and 0·053 cm s?2) and a repeated ramped‐critical swimming speed test. Regardless of the swim protocol, the final swimming speeds did not differ significantly (P > 0·05) among swim tests and ranged from 4·54 to 5·20 body lengths s?1. This result supports the hypothesis that at an early life stage, O. gorbuscha display the same fatigue speeds independent of the swimming test utilized. Whole body and plasma [Na+] and [Cl?] measured at the conclusion of these tests were significantly elevated when compared with control values (P < 0·05) and appear to be predominantly associated with dehydration rather than net ion gain. Given this finding for a small salmonid, estimates of swim performance can be accurately measured with acceleration tests lasting <10 min, allowing a more rapid processing than is possible with a longer critical swim speed test.  相似文献

To study migration performance and return rates of hatchery brown trout Salmo trutta smolts the first 5 months after release, 50 fish in each year (fork length, LF, 158–288 mm) were in two subsequent years tagged with acoustic transmitters and recorded by automatic listening stations in the River Nidelva (central Norway), its estuary and in the marine environment. More than half of the smolts became anadromous migrants (52% in 2011 and 70% in 2012). The fish spent longer time in the estuary than in the marine environment and the results suggest that migratory behaviour of S. trutta smolts is not only restricted to be resident or anadrome–lacustrine, but that there is also an intermediary strategy of estuarine feeding. There were no differences in LF or mass between groups of smolts with different migration patterns. Return rates from the sea within the first 5 months after release were in both years 16%. Median progression rate in the river was 0·090 LF s?1 but decreased significantly as the smolts entered the estuary (0·015 LF s?1). The long residential time in the estuary may increase the risk of negative effects of anthropogenic activities in estuaries, such as harbours and industrial development, and special attention should be given to evaluate effects of such activities.  相似文献

Wild, downstream‐migrating cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii, smolts and adults were captured at a weir in Big Beef Creek, Hood Canal, Washington, surgically implanted with acoustic tags and tracked to identify spring and summer movements using stationary receivers in order to test the assumption that the species moves little while in marine waters. Overall, 93–96% migrated from the stream into the east side of the long narrow fjord, where they dispersed north and south along the shoreline. Most O. c. clarkii were detected nearshore within 10 km of the release site, with declining detection rates to 77 km. Over one‐third (36%) crossed c. 2–4 km of deep water to the other side but only one O. c. clarkii left the Hood Canal basin. Movements and behaviour patterns did not differ between smolts and adults but cluster analysis revealed two modes of distribution, here categorized as residents and migrants. Within these categories of overall distribution, a range of finer‐scale behaviour patterns was observed, including sedentary individuals, daily moving between proximate sites and more continuous long‐distance travel. Diel movement patterns varied markedly among individuals but overall activity increased near dawn, peaked around mid‐day and declined but continued at night. These patterns contrast with sympatric and closely related steelhead trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, providing new insights into the diversity of salmonid behaviour.  相似文献

Salmon fish of the Salmonidae family, representatives of the Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus genus, the humpback salmon O. gorbuscha Wielb., dog salmon O. keta, coho salmon O. kisutch, blueback salmon O. nerka, and chinook salmon O. tschawytscha, and also of noble salmons genus, Salmo—black salmon S. salar, caught in the northwest water area of the Pacific ocean, are studied in the work. Iodides of acetyl-, propionyl-, and butyrylthiocholine were used as substrates. Carbamate proserine and 5 organophosphorus inhibitors were studied as inhibitors. Testing of homogeneity of cholinesterase activity in the brain tissue has revealed only one enzyme in the coho salmon, while several enzymes, in the dog salmon and humpback salmon, which can be an enzymologic argument for the favor of hypothesis about the presence of interspecies groups among Pacific salmons of the Oncorhynchus genus. Interspecies differences in substrate specificity of the brain tissue in the studied salmonid species are found. The fish enzymes of the fishes have shown a high sensitivity to proserine. Only in the case of diisopropylfluorophosphate, both interspecies and intergenus differences are revealed.  相似文献

An enhancement programme based on stocking 0+ year age‐class Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, conducted in the River Bush, Northern Ireland, U.K. over the period 1996–2005, was reviewed with reference to the performance and biological characteristics of wild fish. Wild ova to 0+ year fry (summer) survival was c. 8% with subsequent wild 0+ year fry‐to‐smolt survival c. 9%. Stocked unfed 0+ year juveniles gave c. 1% survival to smolt whilst fed 0+ year S. salar stocked in late summer exhibited survival at c. 5%. Stocking with unfed and fed fry contributed to increased smolt production and helped attain local management objectives between 2001 and 2005. Significant differences in biological characteristics were observed between wild and stocked‐origin fish. Wild‐smolt cohorts were dominated by 2+ year age‐class fish on the River Bush whilst smolts originating from fed fry mostly comprised younger 1+ year individuals. The mean mass of 1+ year smolts derived from stocked fed fry was significantly lower than that of wild 1+ year smolts, although these differences were not evident between older age classes. Differences in run timing between wild smolts and smolts derived from stocked fry were also apparent with the stocked‐origin fish tending to run earlier than wild fish. Although the stocking exercise was useful in terms of maximizing freshwater production, concerns over the quality of stocked‐origin recruits and the long term consequences for productivity are highlighted.  相似文献
