The densities of populations of Nerita atramentosa Reeve, Austrocochlea constricta Lamarck, Bembiciuin nanum (Lamarck), and Cellana tramoserica (Sowerby) were recorded in 0.25 m2 quadrats on landward and seaward halves of a sheltered and a moderately exposed rock platform from June 1972 to June 1973. The data have been subjected to variance and multiple regression analysis. Differences between densities of each species on the two shores and in the two areas of each shore are discussed with respect to the regressions on littoral height. Densities of Nerita on the sheltered shore, Austrocochlea and Bembicium on both shores, and Cellana, on the exposed shore, increased with height. The density of Cellana on the sheltered shore decreased as height increased. The density differences in the landward and seaward areas on the two shores were attributable to the effect of height for Nerita and Austrocochlea. Height was the major variable affecting the density of these two species on the sheltered shore. Bembicium and Cellana densities on both shores, and Austrocochlea density on the exposed shore, are not primarily determined by height. On the sheltered shore, Nerita and Cellana increased in density with increasing cover of water in rock pools. On the exposed shore, Bembicium and Cellana became sparser with increasing water cover. Bembicium on both shores increased in density with increasing cover of the alga Peyssonelia, as did Cellana on the exposed shore. Cellana and Austrocochlea tended to increase in density with Nerita on the sheltered shore. Cellana tended to be sparse where Bembicium was dense on the exposed shore. The biological effects of substrata and other species on the densities of each species remain unexplained.Significant time effects were found for variations in the densities of Nerita and Cellana on the sheltered shore and of Austrocochlea and Cellana on the exposed shore. The seasonal change in density of Nerita was parabolic with a minimum in summer, and is consistent with the known period of recruitment of this species. The lack of significant time effects on density of Austrocochlea on the sheltered shore is consistent with the known continuous recruitment of this species. The declining density of Austrocochlea on the moderately exposed shore was found, by size-frequency analysis, to be due to reduced recruitment compared with surrounding shores. The density of Cellana on both shores showed seasonal changes, with a maximum in summer, which is consistent with the known period of recruitment in Cellana. The lack of seasonal changes in density of Bembicium is briefly discussed. This type of multifactor analysis identifies biological interactions affecting variation in density of these species. It also corroborates the results of other ecological investigations and determines the relative importance of a variety of physical and biological factors in the distribution of density of intertidal gastropods.  相似文献

Mycosphaerella species are well-known causal agents of leaf diseases on many economically and ecologically important plant species. In Uruguay, a relatively large number of Mycosphaerellaceae and Teratosphaeriaceae are found on Eucalyptus, but nothing is known of these fungi on native Myrtaceae. The aim of this study was to identify Mycosphaerellaceae and Teratosphaeriaceae species associated with leaf diseases on native Myrtaceae in Uruguay and to consider whether host jumps by the pathogen from introduced Eucalyptus to native Myrtaceae have occurred. Several native forests throughout the country were surveyed with special attention given to those located close to Eucalyptus plantations. Five species belonging to the Mycosphaerellaceae and Teratosphaeriaceae clades were found on native Myrtaceous trees and three of these had previously been reported on Eucalyptus in Uruguay. Those occurring both on Eucalyptus and native Myrtaceae included Pallidocercospora heimii, Pseudocercospora norchiensis, and Teratosphaeria aurantia. In addition, Mycosphaerella yunnanensis, a species known to occur on Eucalyptus but not previously recorded in Uruguay, was found on leaves of two native Myrtaceous hosts. Because most of these species occur on Eucalyptus in countries other than Uruguay, it appears that they were introduced in this country and have adapted to be able to infect native Myrtaceae. These apparent host jumps have the potential to result in serious disease problems and they should be carefully monitored.  相似文献

Sandy and shingle beaches were investigated in 2009 and 2010 along the coast of the Baltic Sea in northern Germany with the purpose of assessing biodiversity gradients from shingle to sandy beaches, from beach to primary dunes, and the impacts of tourism on biodiversity. On nine beach sites, ranging between 100% shingle and 99% sand without shingle, Carabidae, Staphylinidae, and Araneae were studied. Two of the six sandy beaches were open and four were closed to tourists. Additionally, trampling effects from tourists, species richness of plants, and plant cover were investigated on sixteen beaches. According to results, primary dunes showed higher species richness in carabids and spiders, but not in staphylinds. Shingle beaches exhibited lower species richness in Staphylinidae and Araneae, but not in Carabidae. As estimated by the Jackknife II method, shingle beaches were the lowest in total species richness. Trampling intensity ranged from 0 footprints m−2 day−1 on closed beaches, up to a maximum of 30 footprints m−2 day−1. On “intensively” used beaches (12 footprints m−2 day−1, on average), reduction of plant cover was more pronounced than on “extensively” used beaches (7 footprints m−2 day−1, on average). Both plant cover and plant species richness were lower on intensively and extensively used beaches than on closed beaches. In arthropods, only staphylind and spider species richness was significantly lower on open beaches than on closed beaches, but no differences were found in carabids. Referring to our results, trampling effects from tourists have high impact on species richness of sandy beaches, on both intensively and extensively used sites.  相似文献

The positive effect of ventilation of the culture container on in vitro shoot proliferation and quality was already proven for different species. Hereafter we report on the evolution of the headspace during in vitro culture of plantain in a Temporary Immersion Bioreactor (TIB) on the one hand, and culture on semi-solid medium on the other hand. The CO2 and C2H4 concentration reached a maximum of 12% and 0.45 μl l−1, respectively in the control treatment on semi-solid medium, compared to 5.7% CO2 and 0.06 μl l−1 C2H4 in TIB. The minimal O2-concentration on semi-solid medium was 15.1%, compared to 19.3% in TIB. The multiplication rate was best in TIB, 6.4 compared to 4.3 in semi-solid conditions, and this was also the case for shoot height (4.3 cm compared to 3.3 cm), and leaf number (2.6 compared to 1.6). Moreover shoots produced on semi-solid medium showed distorted leaves. A typical day-night pattern in CO2 and O2 concentration was observed in TIB, as well as on semi-solid medium; this is illustrative for the photosynthetic capacity of the plant material produced in both systems.  相似文献

To elucidate how atmospheric CO2 enrichment, enhanced nutrient supply and soil quality interact to affect regrowth of temperate forests, young Fagus sylvatica and Picea abies trees were grown together in large model ecosystems. Identical communities were established on a nutrient-poor acidic and on a more fertile calcareous soil and tree growth, leaf area index, fine root density and soil respiration monitored over four complete growing seasons. Biomass responses to CO2 enrichment and enhanced N supply at the end of the experiment reflected compound interest effects of growth stimulation during the first two to three seasons rather than persistent stimulation over the whole duration of the experiment. Whereas biomass of Picea was enhanced in elevated CO2 on both soils, Fagus responded negatively to CO2 on acidic but positively on calcareous soil. Biomass of both species profited from enhanced N supply on the poor acidic soil only. Leaf area index on both soils was greater in high N supply as a consequence of a stimulation early in the experiment, but was unaffected by CO2 enrichment. Fine root density on acidic soil was increased in high N supply, but this did not stimulate soil respiration rate. In contrast, elevated CO2 stimulated both fine root density and soil CO2 efflux on calcareous soil, especially towards the end of the experiment. Our experiment suggests that future species dominance in beech-spruce forests is likely to change in response to CO2 enrichment, but this response is subject to complex interactions with environmental factors other than CO2, particularly soil type.  相似文献

Summary Coatline ecosystems on Oahu, Hawaii were described in terms of vegetation composition and structure, and environmental components such as climate, physiography, exposure, substratum, and ground water. Vegetation patterns were related to these environmental components. Relevés were established in 22 study areas around Oahu to study the broader patterns of vegetation and environment, and 2 m wide belt-transects were laid out in 16 areas to study structural and floristic zonation from the ocean edge to the limit of the strand flora inland. Physiographic position, substrate type, wind exposure and climate (through climate-diagrams) were determined for each site. Soil parameters determined along the transects were salt concentration, pH, organic carbon, moisture equivalent, soil moisture at 15 atmospheres pressure, and available moisture.Three levels of pattern in vegetation distribution were inferred. First, there were similarities and differences between study areas in terms of vegetation composition and structure, and environmental components. Thirteen ecosystem-classes were recognized on the bases of dominant species and landform: Hibiscus ecosystem on beach flat, Scaevola on dunes, Scaevola on talus and alluvium, Scaevola on raised coral rock, Scaevola on rocky basalt coast, Chloris-Sida on talus, Prosopis on dunes, Prosopis on talus and alluvium, Prosopis on tuffaceous headland, Chloris-Prosopis on dune and clay flat complex, Batis on mud flats, Rhizophora on tidal flats, and Scirpus-Eichornia in fresh-water pond.A second level of pattern was that of zonation into physiognomic zones, and a third that of floristic zonation or change in species composition with distance from sea. Only seven ecosystems, representing five ecosystem-classes (Scaevola on dunes, Scaevola on coral rock, Prosopis on dunes, Prosopis on talus and alluvium, and Prosopis on tuffaccous headland), showed distinct physiognomic zones. But all emerged ecosystems showed floristic zonation. The distribution of the ecosystems coastwise is most broadly related to rainfall and drought patterns, to exposure to wind and surf, and to salinity of soil and water. Hibiscus ecosystems occur in wet, protected beach flats of terrigenous sand, found in windward coasts; Scaevola ecosystems in areas exposed to intense wind and salt spray; Prosopis ecosystems and their variant, Chloris-Prosopis ecosystem, in droughtly areas of the leeward coast; Chloris-Sida ecosystem on rocky soils in the same droughty climate; Batis ecosystems on mud flats of high soil- and ground-water salinity; Rhizophora ecosystems in protected shorelines subject to tides; and Scirpus-Eichornia ecosystem in still fresh water.Salt concentration decreased markedly with distance inland in fine-textured soils, but showed only slight increases or decreases in coarse-textured dune soils. Organic matter showed increases, with three transects registering increases of 15% organic C at peak portions. pH was very variable; alkaline values arising largely from a high proportion of calcium carbonate parent material or high salt content and more acid values arising from greater organic matter incorporation. The range of many of the strand species has been increasingly limited by direct disturbance and indirectly by the seaward encroachment of introduced Prosopis. But they are still persisting (in larger or smaller numbers) in Scaevola ecosystems.  相似文献

Analysis of soil solution from forest sites dominated by Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus maculata indicates that soluble forms of organic nitrogen (amino acids and protein) are present in concentrations similar to those of mineral nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium). Experiments were conducted to determine the extent to which mycorrhizal associations might broaden nitrogen source utilization in Eucalyptus seedlings to include organic nitrogen. In isolation, species of ectomycorrhizal fungi from northern Australia show varying abilities to utilize mineral and organic forms of nitrogen as sole sources. Pisolithus sp. displayed strongest growth on NH4+, glutamine and asparagine, but grew poorly on protein, while Amanita sp. grew well both on mineral sources and on a range of organic sources (e.g. arginine, asparagine, glutamine and protein). In sterile culture, non-mycorrhizal seedlings of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus maculata grew well on mineral sources of nitrogen, but showed no ability to grow on sources of organic nitrogen other than glutamine. In contrast, mycorrhizal seedlings grew well on a range of organic nitrogen sources. These observations indicate that mycorrhizal associations confer on species of Eucalyptus the ability to broaden their resource base substantially with respect to nitrogen. This ability to utilize organic nitrogen was not directly related to that of the fungal symbiont in isolation. Seedlings mycorrhizal with Pisolithus sp. were able to assimilate sources of nitrogen (in particular histidine and protein) on which the fungus in pure culture appeared to grow weakly. Experiments in which plants were fed 15N-labelled ammonium were undertaken in order to investigate the influence of mycorrhizal colonization on the pathway of nitrogen metabolism. In roots and shoots of all seedlings, 15N was incorporated into the amide group of glutamine, and label was also found in the amino groups of glutamine, glutamic acid, γ-aminobutyric acid and alanine. Mycorrhizal colonization appeared to have no effect on the assimilation pathway and metabolism of [15N]H4+; labelling data were consistent with the operation of the glutamate synthase cycle in plants infected with either Pisolithus sp. (which in isolation assimilates via the glutamate synthase cycle) or Elaphomyces sp. (which assimilates via glutamate dehydrogenase). It is likely that the control of carbon supply to the mycorrhizal fungus from the host may have a profound effect on both the assimilatory pathway and the range of nitrogen sources that can be utilized by the association.  相似文献

Cereal aphids were sampled monthly on graminaceous host plants on farmland in Hampshire, UK from September 1977 to April 1980. Sitobion avenae overwintered anholocyclically on most types of Gramineae, particularly seedling grass crops and small-grain cereals. S. fragariae was probably mainly holocyclic on Rubus spp. Large summer populations of Metopolophium dirhodum were probably derived from holocyclic colonies on roses. M. festucae (subsp. cerealium) appeared to overwinter only anholocyclically, and was found mainly on mature grass crops and grasses in hedgerows. Rhopalosiphum padi was the most numerous species in autumn and overwintered anholocyclically in all three winters studied. R. insertum and R. maidis were rare and did not appear to survive the winter anholocyclically on graminaceous hosts.  相似文献

Sap-feeding homopterans, which reduce the fitness of their host plants, are often tended by ants that feed on their honeydew. The composition of the honeydew varies with both the aphid and the host plant. Extra-floral nectaries (EFNs) are believed to have evolved to attract attending ants, protecting the hosts, but it is unknown if EFNs on different plants have the same impact on the relations between an aphid species feeding on those plants and its tending ant. Experimental research was conducted to examine the attraction of Tapinoma erraticum scout ants to honeydew from the aphid Aphis gossypii feeding on two different plants, Prunus amygdalus and Mentha piperita, negligence of tending the aphids, and survival of the aphids in the presence of artificial EFNs. The scout ants were significantly more attracted to artificial nectar dispensed on P. amygdalus leaves than on M. piperita, or aphids on both plants and water. They neglected aphids in the presence of artificial EFNs on M. piperita but not on P. amygdalus. The aphid population on M. piperita did not statistically change in the presence of artificial EFNs during the 8 days of the third experiment. On P. amygdalus, the aphids succeeded in developing fully to winged form. In conclusion, the responses of the ants tending aphids to the presence of artificial EFNs were influenced by the host plant.  相似文献

Native snakeweeds, especially Gutierrezia sarothrae (Pursh) Britton and Rusby and Gutierrezia microcephala (DC.) A. Gray, are among the most widespread and damaging weeds of rangelands in the western United States and northern Mexico. The genus long ago spread to southern South America, where further speciation occurred. We have found several species of insects in Argentina that damage other species of snakeweeds there and are possible candidates for biological control in North America. The first of these, the root-boring weevil, Heilipodus ventralis (Hustache), was tested in Argentina and then sent to the USDA-ARS Insect Quarantine Facility at Temple, Texas, for host specificity testing on North American plants. We tested H. ventralis on 40 species of the family Asteraceae, in 19 tests of five types, using 686 adults and 365 larvae. Host specificity increased from adult feeding, to ovipositional selection, to larval development. At Temple, adults fed mostly on 6 species of the closely related genera Grindelia, Gutierrezia, and Gymnosperma, but with substantial feeding on four other genera of the two preferred subtribes Solidagininae and Machaerantherinae and on Baccharis in the tribe Baccharidinae, with lesser feeding on the subtribe Asterinae, all in the tribe Astereae, and on 1 species in the tribe Anthemideae. Females oviposited primarily on the same 6 species but very little on plants outside the 2 preferred subtribes. Larvae developed only on 9 of the 29 U.S. plant species tested, 6 within the two preferred subtribes and on Brickellia and Aster in other tribes. Only 5 species of three genera appear to be potential true hosts of H. ventralis in North America, on which all stages of the life cycle, adult feeding, oviposition, and larval development, can take place; these are Gymnosperma glutinosum (Spreng.) Less., Gutierrezia grandis Blake, Gut. microcephala, Gut. sarothrae, and Grindelia lanceolata Nutt. None of these genera contain species of economic or notable ecological value; the few rare species appear to be protected by habitat isolation from attack by H. ventralis. H. ventralis, therefore, appears sufficiently host specific for field release in North America. This is the first introduced biocontrol agent to be approved for release in a continental area to control a native weed.  相似文献

We ask whether patterns of genetic variation in a phytophagous insect's responses to potential host plants shed light on the phylogenetic history of host association. Ophraella communa feeds chiefly, and in eastern North America exclusively, on Ambrosia (Asteraceae: Ambrosiinae). Using mostly half-sib breeding designs, we screened for genetic variation in feeding responses to and larval survival on its own host and on seven other plants that are hosts (or, on one case, closely related to the host) of other species of Ophraella. We found evidence for genetic variation in feeding responses to five of the seven test plants, other than the natural host. We found no evidence of genetic variation in feeding responses to two plant species, nor in capacity for larval survival on six. These results imply constraints on the availability of genetic variation; however, little evidence for constraints in the form of negative genetic correlations was found. These results are interpreted in the context of a provisional phylogeny of, and a history of host shifts within, the genus. Ophraella communa does not present evidence of genetic variation in its ability to feed and/or survive on Solidago, even though it is probably descended from a lineage that fed on Solidago or related plants, possibly as recently as 1.9 million years ago. Genetic variation in performance on this plant may have been lost. Based on evidence for genetic variation and on mean performance, by far the greatest potentiality for adaptation to a congener's host was evinced in responses to Iva frutescens, which not only is related and chemically similar to Ambrosia, but also is the host of a closely related species of Ophraella that may have been derived from an Ambrosia-associated ancestor. Genetic variation in O. communa's capacity to feed and/or survive on its congeners' hosts is less evident for plants that do not represent historically realized host shifts (with one exception) than for those that may (but see Note Added in Proof). The results offer some support for the hypothesis that the evolution of host shifts has been guided in part by constrained genetic variation.  相似文献

Application of aqueous suspensions of infective juvenile Heterorhabditis heliothidis, isolate T327, to the soil resulted in up to 100% parasitisation of larvae of the black vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus, in potted yew, raspberries and grapes in nurseries, and over 87% parasitisation on potted cyclamens and strawberries. Pupae and newly emerged adults on grapevines were also parasitised. Another isolate, T310, produced 92.5 to 98.5% parasitism of O. sulcatus larvae on potted cyclamens in glasshouse, but was less effective on strawberries. Neoaplectana bibionis was found to be less effective than H. heliothidis T327 strain. The use of these nematodes provides an economical and effective method for controlling O. sulcatus on potted plants in glasshouses and nurseries.  相似文献

Prior research indicated the ability of concentrated metabolites from Xenorhabdus spp. and Photorhabdus spp. to suppress a variety of peach and pecan diseases in vitro, and on detached pecan leaves or terminals. In the current study, our objectives were to (1) determine if bacterial broths (in addition to concentrated metabolites tested previously) have suppressive ability and (2) determine if metabolites or bacterial broths are active in a soil medium. In laboratory studies, two pathogens of pecan (Fusicladium effusum and Phytophthora cactorum) and one peach pathogen (Armillaria tabescens) were tested for susceptibility to Xenorhabdus bovienii (SN) and Photorhabdus luminescens (VS) bacterial broths or concentrated metabolites on three different substrates. Treatments were applied to lesions of F. effusum on terminals to ascertain any suppressive effect on sporulation, to A. tabescens in soil to determine effect on survival of mycelia, and to lesions caused by P. cactorum on pecan leaf surfaces to assess any reduction in lesion development. Acetone (the metabolite solvent), un-inoculated media (tryptic soy broth) and water were included as controls. The X. bovienii metabolite treatment was as efficacious as a commercial fungicide (fenbuconazole) in reducing sporulation of F. effusum on pecan terminals. The P. luminescens metabolite treatment also caused reduced sporulation relative to water and acetone controls but bacterial broths had no effect. In contrast, all bacterial broth and metabolite treatments suppressed lesion growth caused by P. cactorum (measured on detached leaves maintained on agar). However, in soil, only the P. luminescens metabolite treatment was suppressive to A. tabescens (this is the first report of Photorhabdus or Xenorhabdus toxicity to Armillaria spp.). This study provides a basis for further research on the use of Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus metabolites or bacterial broth for suppression of pecan and peach diseases.  相似文献

Summary Young Panolis flammea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae were unable to survive on the mature (one-year old) needles of Pinus contorta and Pinus sylvestris. Larval growth and survival on the current year's shoots of the 2 pine host plants first incresed, and then decreased as pine shoot development progressed, the effect on survival being more marked at 10° C that 18° C. The survival of larvae on lodgepole pine on field-grown plants transferred to 10° C rose from 26% in March to 87% in mid May, and rose from 3% to 82% on Scots pine in the same period. Larval survival exceeded 70% for about 8 weeks on lodgepole pine and about 6 weeks on Scots pine, this period starting and ending earlier on lodgepole than on Scots pine. The nitrogen, water and phosphorus contents of both pines were at a maximum in May and decline gradually thereafter; the soluble tannin content showed a more complex pattern. These results are discussed in relation to the possible importance of phenological coincidence on the population dynamics of P. flammea with emphasis on its greater abundance on lodgepole pine in Scotland.  相似文献

Artificial rest reefs were set on sandy and rocky bottoms at 5–10 m depth along the coast of southern Japan. Mature thalli ofSargassum, Gelidium and other seaweds were transported from other coastal areas, packed in mesh bags and attached to the reefs to start the beds. After one year, the seaweed flora on the reef on a sandy bottom consisted of more than 20 species, includingSargassum spp. andGelidium amansii, which are important animal food species. Coralline algae were the dominants on the rocky bottom reefs. The lower biomass on reefs on the rocky bottom was due to grazing by urchins. The same number of species was present in the first and second years on reefs on sandy bottoms, but there were moreSargassum thalli the second year.Maximum algal biomass of the artificial reef in May of the second year was 9998 g wet wt m–2 in sandy areas, 441 g wet wt m–2 in boulder areas and 228 g wet wt m–2 in rocky areas. Reefs on rocky bottoms continued to be covered by coralline algae and several species ofCodium andDictyota.  相似文献

Summary The effect of different synthetic diets of the hostMyzus persicae on the parasiteAphelinus asychis was tested. Deficient diets were prepared by reducing sucrose or iron concentration: sucrose concentration was reduced from 15% in the complete diet (D.I.) to 7.5% in D. II and 3.75% in D. III; that of iron from 0.0023% in D. I to 0.0011% in D. IV and 0% in D.V.The development of the immature stages ofA. asychis in aphids fed on the deficient diets was delayed (especially on D. V). The size of the emerging adults was small, which corresponds with the reduced size of the host. The percentage of the male parasites was found to be higher on the deficient diets than on the full one. The lowest average longevity of the females was found among those reared on aphids on D. III and D.V.If honeydew fromM. persicae was offered to the females, a marked reduction in the longevity of these parasites was observed on D. II and D. III. On the other hand, on honeydew from aphids on D. IV and D.V,A. asychis lived as long as on honeydew from those fed on D.I.The fecundity of the females ofA. asychis was found to be dependent on the food composition of the hosts during larval development as well as during adult life.  相似文献

The submersed macrophyte Vallisneria americana was grown for seven weeks in a greenhouse to test for differences in the ability of three different sediments to support growth stimulation in response to CO2 enrichment at low pH. Plants accumulated 21- to 24-fold greater biomass at 10 × ambient CO2 concentrations than at ambient CO2 on all sediments. At both CO2 levels, plants grown on sediment from an acidified lake accumulated ca. 81%, and those grown on oligotrophic lake sediment ca. 47% as much biomass as plants grown on alkaline lake sediment. Despite striking CO2 and sediment effects on biomass accumulation, there was no significant interaction (using log-transformed data) between CO2 and sediment effects, indicating that all sediments allowed similar proportionate growth responses to CO2 enrichment. Plants grown on the less fertile sediments showed greater relative allocation to horizontal versus vertical growth by producing more rosette-bearing stolons in relation to plant height (leaf length) than plants grown on relatively fertile, alkaline lake sediment. Tissue analysis suggested that sediment effects on Vallisneria growth could be attributed neither to mineral putrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) limitation nor to aluminum toxicity in these low pH treatments. In any case, CO2 availability can be an important regulator of submersed macrophyte growth at low pH on a variety of sediment types, including those from oligotrophic and acidic lakes.  相似文献

Two artificial diets, devoid of insect components, were developed for the predator Perillus bioculatus (Fabricius). The diets based on chicken liver and tuna fish were designed to approach the nutritional characteristics of the primary insect prey, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) eggs. P. bioculatus was reared on diet 2 for 11 consecutive generations without cumulative detrimental effects on its biology. Developmental time and preovipositional period were significantly longer, and egg viability, survival from egg to adult, and fecundity were significantly lower in P. bioculatus individuals reared on artificial diets than in those reared on L. decemlineata eggs. A significant reduction in developmental time, increase in survival from egg to adult, and reduction in length of the preovipositional period were observed after 11 generations of in vitro reared P. bioculatus on diet 2. These changes may indicate that the predators experience some degree of adaptation to the diet after several consecutive generations of in vitro rearing. No changes in egg viability were observed after 11 generations of in vitro rearing. Adult female weight was unaffected when reared on artificial diet, but a significant increase was observed after 11 generations of in vitro rearing. Females under all treatments weighed an average of 11.6 mg more than the males.  相似文献

Ants (L. niger and L. flavus) build conspicuous mounds that are covered with vegetation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the vegetation on ant mounds in semi-natural grasslands differed from that around the mounds. Another aim was to investigate whether the changes in the vegetation on ant mounds were influenced by grazing management or by habitat characteristics, semi-dry versus moist. Here, the total number of plant species and total plant cover were lower on ant mounds than in patches off-mound. The plant cover of perennials that form rosettes was twice as high on mounds inhabited by L. niger than on those inhabited by L. flavus. Only a few plant species were restricted to either ant mounds or adjacent field and the effects of ants on the plant diversity in semi-natural grasslands seemed to be low. Grazing management did not affect the differences in the vegetation on ant mounds and in equal-sized patches off-mound, whereas habitat characteristics affected ant-induced changes in vegetation cover of some plant species.  相似文献

Plasmid profiles were studied in five Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strains of various origin cultivated on a medium with Fe2+, as well as adapted to such oxidation substrates as S0, FeS2, and sulfide concentrate. The method used revealed plasmids in all A. ferrooxidans strains grown on a medium with Fe2+. One plasmid was found in strain TFL-2; two plasmids, in strains TFO, TFBk, and TFV-1; and three plasmids were detected in strain TFN-d. The adaptation of strain TFN-d to sulfide concentrate and the adaptation of strain TFV-1 to S0, FeS2, or sulfide concentrate resulted in a change in the number of plasmids occurring in cells. In cells of strain TFN-d adapted to sulfide concentrate, the number of plasmids decreased from three to two. The number of plasmids in cells of strain TFV-1 adapted to different substrates varied from three to six depending on the energy source present in the medium: three plasmids were found after growth on FeS2, four after growth on S0, and six after growth on sulfide concentrate. The possible role of plasmids in the adaptation of A. ferrooxidans to new energy substrates and in the regulation of the intensity of their oxidation is discussed.  相似文献
