The authors examined altitudinal variations in the thermal responses of seed germination and seedling growth inReynoutria japonica (=Polygonum cuspidatum) under controlled environmental conditions. Seed populations were collected from different altitudes on Mt Fuji in Japan.
The mean seed weight of the upland populations (above 1500 m) was significantly (1.5-fold) heavier than that of the lowland
populations (below 1400 m). Under the lowest temperature regime of 15/10°C (day/night) the upland populations showed a significantly
higher percentage and speed of germination than the lowland populations; this was not significant under higher temperature
regimes. These results indicate that the germination traits of the upland populations on Mt Fuji are favorable for colonization
in their cold habitats (low temperature and short growing season). Growth and shoot development were compared between the
seedlings grown from seeds collected at altitudes of 700 and 2420 m. The upland seedlings showed a significantly larger biomass
and leaf area than the lowland seedlings at 15°C, but there was no difference at 25°C. The difference in biomass at 15°C was
attributed to the difference in seed weight. The upland seedlings produced a significantly larger number of branches with
smaller and more numerous leaves at both 15°C and 25°C. these developmental traits of the upland seedlings were considered
to represent the adaptation of the life form to upland environments. It was concluded that theR. japonica populations along an altitudinal gradient on Mt Fuji can be classified into two ecotypes, whose distribution border lies
at an altitude of about 1400–1500m. In this study, the seed weight and germination traits of twoR. japonica seed populations collected in Chiba Prefecture were briefly compared with those of the lowland populations on Mt Fuji. 相似文献

Respiration for maintenance and growth ofReynoutria japonica ecotypes from altitudes of 700 and 2420 m on Mt Fuji were measured in two controlled thermal conditions. The maintenance
respiration of the high-altitude ecotype at both 15 and 25°C was significantly (1.7-fold) higher than that of the low-altitude
ecotype, whereas growth respiration was independent of both ecotype and temperature. The temperature coefficient (Q10) of the maintenance respiration was about 1.9 in both ecotypes. The results show that there is ecotypic differentiation in
the performance of maintenance respiration. It is suggested that the high maintenance respiration of the high-altitudeR. japonica ecotype is advantageous in severe upland environments but disadvantageous in a warm lowland climate in terms of carbon economy. 相似文献

Nitrogen-fixing (acetylene-reducing) activity of intact saplings ofAlnus maximowiczii was measured under natural conditions in the subalpine zone of Mt Fuji. The nitrogen-fixing activity was detected from the
middle of June when expansion of leaves had just begun to the end of October when the shedding of leaves was almost completed.
Diurnal changes in the activity were almost parallel with those of ground temperature. The measured nitrogen-fixing activity
was related to ground temperature and total leaf area. Using this relation, annual nitrogen fixation was estimated from the
data of ground temperature and leaf area measured in the field. The amount of annual nitrogen fixation was almost the same
as that of nitrogen used for annual growth. It was concluded that nitrogen fixation by nodules made a considerable contribution
to the nitrogen economy in the saplings ofA. maximowiczii. 相似文献

Summary Hydrocotyle bonariensis, a common rhizomatous perennial of coastal North Carolina, forms extensive clones in dune systems characterized by a patchy nitrogen distribution. An experiment was conducted in which Hydrocotyle clones were grown across artificially created soil nitrogen gradients to determine: (1) the effect of soil nitrogen availability and nitrogen translocation on clonal structure and (2) the costs versus benefits of nitrogen translocation as measured by sexual and clonal reproduction. Acropetal translocation of nitrogen resulted in highly significant benefits to clones growing from areas of high N to areas of low N. Limited basipetal translocation was also demonstrated. Hydrocotyle ramets responded to increased nitrogen availability, from either intraclonal translocation or immediate uptake from the soil, by producing branches. Nitrogen level, however, had no effect on internode distances. Clonal integration of nitrogen, in tandem with a plastic morphology, allow Hydrocotyle clones to expand across a nitrogen-limited dune environment and to locally exploit nitrogen patches when they are encountered. 相似文献

Photosynthetic and respiratory activities and gross production in relation to temperature conditions were investigated in
the population of an evergreen herb,Pyrola japonica, growing on the floor of a deciduous forest in the warm temperate region of central Japan.
Analysis of the temperature-photosynthesis relationship ofP. japonica leaves during the growing season indicated distinct seasonal changes in the temperature optimum for photosynthesis. This
population was found to be acclimatable to ambient air temperatures exceeding 15C, but this acclimation became less pronounced
under thermal conditions below 15 C. This plant possessed narrow photosynthetic optima in the warm season but wide optima
in the cold season. The shape of the temperature-respiration curve did not vary significantly with the months except for April.
The Q10 for respiration between 10 C and 20 C was calculated to be 1.93–2.65. Annual dry matter loss associated with respiration
was estimated to amount to 159.1 g d.w.m−2 based on the measurements of the seasonal changes in the respiratory activity of each organ. Gross production of this population
was estimated to be 219.3 g d.w.m−2 year−1 as the sum total of the net production (60.2 g d.w.m−2year−1) and the respiration. Monthly gross production was high in the early growing season, and low and stable in winter. 相似文献

The phosphomonoesterase activity of a microbialcommunity dominated by Chroococcidiopsis in arock sample from the Antarctic dry desert was comparedwith that of a non-axenic culture of thecyanobacterium isolated from the same rock in order toestablish whether the organism differed in itsproperties when immobilized in the rock. The pHoptimum (9.5) was the same, but the response totemperature and light both differed. In the case oftemperature, the optimum was much higher in culture. Light flux at the low value of 8 mol photonm-2 s-1 was slightly inhibitory for acrushed rock sample, but enhanced activity of thecultured material. Although materials both showeda typical (apparent) Michaelis-Menten relationship,the values for Km and Vmax differed. The present study is an attempt to investigate whether triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC), a chemical compound which measures dehydrogenase activity, could be used to study fine-root vitality from two different points of view: (i) in relation to ageing; (ii) as an indicator of environmental stress, in this case of excess nitrogen. The study was performed with excavated fine-roots from middle-aged Norway spruce and Scots pine stands.The ageing aspect was investigated by applying TTC to fine roots separated into different vitality classes, based on certain morphological characteristics. A significant difference in activity was demonstrated only in the case of roots that could be referred to as living and dead, respectively. The use of TTC on fine roots grown at different nitrogen supply levels indicates a possible increase in dehydrogenase activity with increasing nitrogen supply. 相似文献

Nitrogen Limits an Invasive Perennial Shrub in Forest Understory 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Plant invasions can harm communities by domination of one or more vegetation layers. We studied whether Japanese barberry
(Berberis thunbergii DC.) is limited by soil acidity or nitrogen availability in its domination of relatively undisturbed forest understories.
In two sites, one more acid than the other, we applied lime, urea, or a sawdust–sugar mix to replicate plots in established
barberry populations. We predicted that the acid site would be pH or cation limited, while the less acid site was N limited,
unless N availability was inherently higher before treatment. Barberry above-ground net primary production (NPP) was estimated
by a combination of harvest and allometric analysis. Foliar N increased in the urea treatment and was proportional to incubation
estimates of net N mineralization and nitrification. Foliar Ca and P were unaffected by the treatments. Foliar K was proportional
to foliar N. The more acid site had higher foliar Mn, but otherwise the sites differed little. Barberry NPP was proportional
to pre-treatment biomass. The ratio of net production to pre-treatment woody biomass (relative production rate) increased
with foliar N and soil N availability and decreased when soil N was immobilized by sawdust and sugar. There was no effect
of soil pH or cation status on barberry growth, although a correlation with foliar K was reflected by the maintenance of a
constant K : N ratio. Although more severely acid sites may be less invasible than those studied here, N availability is the
primary limitation to invasive dominance in this landscape.

The life history and matter economy were studied on an evergreen herb,Pyrola japonica Klenze, population growing on the floor of a deciduous forest in a warm temperate region, central Japan. Seasonal changes
in standing crop, bulk density and reserve substance of each organ and in leaf area were investigated over a year. Monthly
and annual net production of the population were estimated based on the growth in dry weight and the seasonal dynamics of
reserve substance. Seasonal peak value of the monthly net production was 16.7 g d.w.m−2 in May. The annual net production was estimated to be 60.2 g d.w.m−2.
Two phases were recognized in the annual pattern of development and matter economy of this plant. Phase I, from April to June,
was characterized by the development of aboveground vegetative organs and the consumption of reserve substance rrom old organs.
Phase II, from July to March, was characterized by the development of reproductive and underground organs, and the accumulation
of reserve substance. Phase II was further divided into two sub-phases according to the behavior of the reserve substance
and the rate of net production. The production process of the population was compared with those of other evergreen herbs

Rice is the most important cereal crop. In the next three decades, the world will need to produce about 60% more rice than today's global production to feed the extra billion people. Nitrogen is the major nutrient limiting rice production. Development of fertilizer-responsive varieties in the Green Revolution, coupled with the realization by farmers of the importance of nitrogen, has led to high rates of N fertilizer use on rice. Increased future demand for rice will entail increased application of fertilizer N. Awareness is growing, however, that such an increase in agricultural production needs to be achieved without endangering the environment. To achieve food security through sustainable agriculture, the requirement for fixed nitrogen must increasingly met by biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) rather than by using nitrogen fixed industrially. It is thus imperative to improve existing BNF systems and develop N2-fixing non-leguminous crops such as rice. Here we review the potentials and constraints of conventional BNF systems in rice agriculture, as well as the prospects of achieving in planta nitrogen fixation in rice. 相似文献

The effect of pelleting seeds of lucerne with lime was studied in an acid sandy soil. In pot experiments, the fraction of seedlings with crown nodules, i.e. nodules on the upper 10 mm of the taproot, increased from 26% to 71%. In rhizotrons, the application of CaCO3 resulted in an even stronger response.An agar-contact method was used to study pH changes in the rhizosphere during a period up to 12 days. Application of 1.0 µmol of CaCO3, in drops of 12 µL volume, resulted in an initial soil pH of 6.1 and yielded 75% crown nodulation. In the absence of CaCO3, roots induced a pH increase from 5.1 (day 0) to 5.7 (day 12). However, this did not increase nodulation (5%). Obviously, this type of alkalinization does not overcome the acid-sensitive step of the nodulation process. 相似文献

Desulfobacter postgatei is an acetate-oxidizing, sulfate-reducing bacterium that metabolizes acetate via the citric acid cycle. The organism has been reported to contain a si-citrate synthase (EC 4.1.3.7) which is activated by AMP and inorganic phosphate. It is show now, that the enzyme mediating citrate formation is an ATP-citrate lyase (EC 4.1.3.8) rather than a citrate synthase. Cell extracts (160,000xg supernatant) catalyzed the conversion of oxaloacetate (apparent K
m=0.2 mM), acetyl-CoA (app. K
m=0.1 mM), ADP (app. K
m=0.06 mM) and phosphate (app. K
m=0.7 mM) to citrate, CoA and ATP with a specific activity of 0.3 mol·min-1·mg-1 protein. Per mol citrate formed 1 mol of ATP was generated. Cleavage of citrate (app. K
m=0.05 mM; V
max=1.2 mol · min-1 · mg-1 protein) was dependent on ATP (app. K
m=0.4 mM) and CoA (app. K
m=0.05 mM) and yielded oxaloacetate, acetyl-CoA, ADP, and phosphate as products in a stoichiometry of citrate:CoA:oxaloacetate:ADP=1:1:1:1.
