Paradinium and Paradinium-like parasites were detected in various copepod hosts collected in the NW Mediterranean Sea, the North Atlantic Ocean, and the Godth?bsfjord (Greenland). The identity and systematic position of the parasitic, plasmodial protist Paradinium was investigated on the basis of SSU rDNA and morphology. SSU rDNA sequences were obtained from 3 specimens of Paradinium poucheti isolated from their cyclopoid copepod host, Oithona similis. In addition, a comparable sequence was obtained from a hitherto undescribed species of Paradinium from the harpactacoid copepod Euterpina acutifrons. Finally, SSU rDNA sequences were acquired from 2 specimens of a red plasmodial parasite (RP parasite) isolated from Clausocalanus sp. Both morphological and SSU rDNA sequence data supported that P. poucheti and Paradinium sp. are closely related organisms. In phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequences, Paradinium spp. clustered with sequences from an uncultured eukaryote clone from the Pacific Ocean and two sequences from haplosporidian-like parasites of shrimps, Pandalus spp. This Paradinium clade branched as a sister group to a clade comprising the Haplosporidia and the Foraminifera. The RP parasite had a superficial morphological resemblance to Paradinium and has previously been interpreted as a member of this genus. However, several morphological characters contradict this and SSU rDNA sequence data disagree with the RP parasite and Paradinium being related. The phylogenetic analyses suggested that the RP parasite is a fast-evolved alveolate and a member of the so-called marine alveolate Group I (MAGI) and emerging data now suggest that this enigmatic group may, like the syndinian dinoflagellates, consist of heterotrophic parasites.  相似文献

Crustaceans are important hosts for a number of helminth parasites, and they are increasingly used as models for studying the physiology, ecology and evolution of parasite-host interactions. In ecological studies, this interaction is commonly described only in terms of prevalence and number of larvae per infected host. However, the volume of helminth parasites can vary greatly, and this variation can potentially give important insights into the nature of a parasite-host relationship. It may influence and be influenced, for example, by within-host competition, host size, growth, and life history. Here we present a simple method that allows rapid approximation of the absolute and relative volumes of cestode larvae within copepod hosts of various developmental stages (nauplii, copepodites and adults). The measurements are taken in vivo without much disturbance of the animals, i.e. the technique allows study of growth and development of the parasites in relation to that of their hosts. The principles of this technique can be adopted to other helminth parasites and other crustacean hosts. Using this method in the copepod Macrocyclops albidus infected with the cestode Schistocephalus solidus, we found that the relative parasite size (= `parasite index') ranged from 0.5% to 6.5% of host size 14 days after infection. It was greater in male than in female hosts. With increasing number of parasites per host, the total parasite volume increased while the mean volume of the individual parasites decreased. The magnitude of the observed parasite indices, the large variation that was found within a sample of 46 infected adult copepods, and the observed correlates suggest that this new index can indeed be an important measure of parasite success and its pathogenecity.  相似文献

The genus Salmincola is an ectoparasitic copepod group commonly infesting the branchial and buccal cavities of salmonids. While negative impacts on hatchery fishes have been reported, their impacts on wild fish populations and distribution patterns are critically understudied. In the Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan, we found parasites belonging to this genus on the branchial cavity of a stream salmonid, Southern Asian Dolly Varden Salvelinus curilus. All parasites recovered were identified as Salmincola edwardsii based on morphological characteristics and partial 28S rDNA sequences. Prevalence was highly heterogeneous even among neighboring streams (0–54.8%, < 10 km) with the mean intensity among streams being generally low (2.19 parasites/infeted fish). Despite the low intensity, quantile regression analysis showed negative trends between parasite intensity and host condition, suggesting that the infestation of S. edwardsii has a potential negative impact on the host salmonid. In addition, a single copepod was found from an anadromous fish, which could indicate some salinity tolerance of the copepods. It is important to evaluate the effects of Salmincola spp. on host species and determine the limiting factors on the parasite's distribution for proper management.  相似文献

Twenty sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax L. from a fish farm (floating cage) in Greece were examined for the presence of parasites. The gills of 7 (35%) fish were infected with adult female specimens of the parasitic copepod Lernanthropus kroyeri van Beneden, 1851, and the intensity of infection ranged from 1 to 24 parasites per host. The most infected portion of the gills appeared to be the primary lamellae. Erosion, desquamation and necrosis of the secondary lamellae were noticed near the site of copepod attachment; furthermore, the terminal claw of the second antennae lacerated tissue and vessels of infected gill. Parasitism by L. kroyeri affected the host's condition factor (mean +/- SE in uninfected vs parasitized; 1.88 +/- 0.04 vs 1.66 +/- 0.12; p < 0.05).  相似文献

Polychaete specimens from Hawaii were infected by the copepod Monstrilla. The development of these protelean parasites has remained unstudied for more than a century. Three postnaupliar endoparasitic stages were obtained: copepodids CIII, CIV, and CV, the latter stage found previous to and during emergence. Copepodid development, including the body and appendages (antennules, legs 1–4, caudal rami), is described and analyzed. The feeding tubes and the exiting from the host are also described. In light of the recently proposed inclusion of monstrilloids among caligiform copepods, it was found that monstrilloid copepodid development diverges from caligiforms and other copepod groups in: (1) the segmentation of the urosome at CIII, (2) the early formation of a genital complex, (3) early completion of swimming legs setation, at CIII; (4) delayed segmentation of rami of leg 3 at CIII (vs. the usual two-segmented pattern), (5) loss of one exopodal seta of leg 1 at CIV, (6) full development of leg 1 endopod vs. usually vestigial condition in caligiforms; (7) earlier segmentation of leg 4 rami, and (8) stable interstage (CIII–CV) setation pattern of legs 3 and 4. Overall, monstrilloid development appears to have unique characters and their phylogenetic relations deserve further study.  相似文献

The occurrence of 12 helminth and 4 crustacean parasites on young whiting 0–2 years old from an inshore (Port Erin Bay) and an offshore (off Bradda Head) area of the Isle of Man were compared. No parasites were found on whiting 4.5–15 mm long and the intestinal digenean Lecithaster gibbosus Rudolphi together with the larvae of the copepod Caligus rapax M. Edwards were the first parasites to appear in whiting 15–42 mm long. This appears to be the only time during the life history of the whiting that C. rapax is of importance as a parasite. In whiting 6 months-2 years old from off Bradda Head such helminths as the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus gadi Muller and the digeneans Podocotyle atomon Muller and Cryptocotyle lingua Creplin (metacercariae) were found in significantly fewer fish than in an equivalent group from Port Erin Bay. The differences are correlated with the availability of intermediate hosts and the different food spectra of the two groups of fish and are used to support the theory that inshore and offshore whiting of these age groups form separate populations and that the offshore fish may be more important than the inshore fish in replenishing stocks of older whiting.  相似文献

The impact of the endoparasitic copepod Parachordeumium amphiurae (=Amphiurophilus amphiurae of Goudey-Perrière, 1979) on a host population of the brooding, hermaphroditic ophiuroid Amphipholis squamata in intertidal rock pools in South Devon, UK was assessed. In August 1986 the parasite prevalence was 20.6% and the mean population intensity of infection 0.286 parasites per brittlestar. Female parasites inhabited the genital bursae of hosts and most were found in hosts that were potentially reproductively active. In such hosts brooding capacity was reduced by copepod parasitism. Infected brittlestars showed a reduction in numbers of brooded developmental stages when compared with uninfected hosts of similar size (but the mean size of brooded development stages was not affected). For the population sampled, the overall reduction in brooding capacity was about 44%. The association between Amphipholis and Parachordeumium was compared with normal brood parasitism.  相似文献

Trophic relationships between 10 species of fish host and their associated nematode, cestode, and copepod parasites were investigated using stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. Nematodes and cestodes were consistently depleted in 15N with respect to their host, and such fractionation patterns are unlike those conventionally observed between consumers and their diets. Species of copepod parasite were sometimes depleted and sometimes enriched in 15N with respect to fish hosts, and this confirms earlier reports that the nature and magnitude of ectoparasite-host fractionations can vary. Significant differences in delta15N and delta13C were observed among fish tissues, and the isotopic signature of parasites did not always closely correspond to that of the tissue with which the parasite was found most closely associated, or on which the parasite was thought to be feeding. Several possible explanations are considered for such discrepancies, including selective feeding on specific amino acids or lipids, migration of the parasite among different fish tissues, changes in the metabolism of the parasite associated with life history and migration between different host animals.  相似文献

The gills of 31 skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis (L.) caught in the Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean Sea) were examined for metazoan parasites, and the gills of 4 specimens from the Balearic Sea (also western Mediterranean Sea) were analysed for comparative purposes. Nine -species of parasites were found, including 8 didymozoid trematodes (Atalostrophion cf. bio-varium, Didymocylindrus filiformis, Didymocylindrus simplex, Didymocystis reniformis, Didymoproblema fusiforme, Didymozoon longicolle, Koellikeria sp. and Lobatozoum multisacculatum) and 1 caligid copepod (Caligus bonito). Koellikeria sp. and L. multisacculatum were not recorded in the Balearic Sea. Most of the parasites (79.2% of all specimens) were didymozoids. Didymozoon longicolle was the dominant species; A. cf. biovarium, D. simplex, D. fusiforme and L. multisacculatum are reported from the Mediterranean Sea for the first time. No correlation was found between the intensity of infection of any parasite species and host size or sex. Most of the parasites, particularly didymozoids, showed a high site-specificity. Significant differences were found between the parasite assemblages of K. pelamis from the Alboran Sea and from the Atlantic Ocean. D. fusiforme, D. longicolle and L. multisacculatum are suggested as potential tags to follow skipjack tuna migrations between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Heterogeneous exposure to parasites may contribute to host species differentiation. Hosts often harbour multiple parasite species which may interact and thus modify each other’s effects on host fitness. Antagonistic or synergistic interactions between parasites may be detectable as niche segregation within hosts. Consequently, the within-host distribution of different parasite taxa may constitute an important axis of infection variation among host populations and species. We investigated the microhabitat distributions and species interactions of gill parasites (four genera) infecting 14 sympatric cichlid species in Lake Victoria, Tanzania. We found that the two most abundant ectoparasite genera (the monogenean Cichlidogyrus spp. and the copepod Lamproglena monodi) were non-randomly distributed across the host gills and their spatial distribution differed between host species. This may indicate microhabitat selection by the parasites and cryptic differences in the host–parasite interaction among host species. Relationships among ectoparasite genera were synergistic: the abundances of Cichlidogyrus spp. and the copepods L. monodi and Ergasilus lamellifer tended to be positively correlated. In contrast, relationships among morphospecies of Cichlidogyrus were antagonistic: the abundances of morphospecies were negatively correlated. Together with niche overlap, this suggests competition among morphospecies of Cichlidogyrus. We also assessed the reproductive activity of the copepod species (the proportion of individuals carrying egg clutches), as it may be affected by the presence of other parasites and provide another indicator of the species specificity of the host–parasite relationship. Copepod reproductive activity did not differ between host species and was not associated with the presence or abundance of other parasites, suggesting that these are generalist parasites, thriving in all cichlid species examined from Lake Victoria.  相似文献

Three species of sticklebacks ( Apeltes quadracus, Gasterosteus aculeatus , and Pungitius pungitius ( n = 236) were collected from five ponds on Sable Island. The nematodes Pseudoterranova decipiens, Contracaecum sp., Paracuaria adunca , and Cosmucephalus obvelatus , and the cestode Diphyllobothrium ditremum parasitized three-spined sticklebacks ( G. aculeatus ) and four-spined sticklebacks ( A. quadracus ) inhabiting four brackish water ponds. All the parasites except P. decipiens infected nine-spined sticklebacks ( P. pungitius ) from a freshwater pond. In addition, the cestode Schistocephalus pungitii , the copepod Thersitina gasterostei , and the monogenean Gyrodactylus canadensis occurred in nine-spined sticklebacks from the freshwater pond. The two cestodes, the copepod, and the sealworm, P. decipiens , were the most common parasites encountered. The remaining helminths were relatively rare. Most of the parasite species were larval forms which use gulls or seals as definitive hosts. These parasites probably colonized Sable Island with their definitive hosts, whereas only two species ( T. gasterostei and G. canadensis ) successfully colonized the island ponds with their fish hosts. The low parasite species richness encountered is attributed to the impoverished nature of the host fauna of Sable island, and the difficulty of colonization as a result of the island's isolation with respect to the mainland.  相似文献

We examined 15 species of ornamental tropical fishes originating from Southeast Asia to determine the cause of losses among 8 fish farms in Korea. A total of 351 individuals belonging to 5 different families (1 species of Characidae, 6 of Cichlidae, 3 of Cyprinidae, 1 of Heleostomatidae, and 4 of Poecilidae) were collected for the purpose of detecting metazoan and protozoan parasites. Parasites were fixed and stained using routine methods, and identified. We found 3 ciliates, 2 monogeneans, 1 nematode, and 1 copepod from 7 host species. Of these, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis was the most common parasite in our study, and together with Trichodina sp., caused mass mortality of Sumatra barb Puntius tetrazona at 1 farm. We also found Camallanus cotti and Tetrahymena corlissi from guppies Poecilia reticulata, both for the first time in Korea. Farmers consider these 2 pathogens to be the most serious ones in Korea. Gussevia asota from oscar Astronotus ocellatus, and Gyrodactylus bullatarudis from platy Xiphophorus maculatus were also found in Korea for the first time. We believe that appropriate quarantine practices for tropical ornamental fishes should be introduced because the failure to require and implement quarantines has already resulted in the accidental introduction of exotic parasites to fish farms, and because these parasites can cause further economic losses if they become established in the wild.  相似文献

A study was initiated to ascertain the prevalence, effect and interaction of the adult stages of the parasitic copepod, Lernaeocera branchialis, on Atlantic cod concurrently infected with a hematozoan, Trypanosoma murmanensis, by comparing condition (K) factor, organ somatic indices, hematological values and lipid concentrations of the liver from infected and uninfected fish of comparable length. Prevalence of the copepod varied from 9 to 21% and was highest in fish examined on the southern coast of Newfoundland. Body condition and blood values were significantly lower in young cod infected with two parasites whereas only K-factor was altered in two size classes parasitized by one copepod. Although lipid concentrations were similar in three length groups of fish without and infected with L. branchialis, the pooled values were significantly greater among the infected group. Mortality occurred only in juvenile cod infected with the copepod and T. murmanensis concurrently. Cod which survived dual infections had lower K-factor and blood values than controls or fish harboring single, parasitic infections. It is concluded that an infection with an adult L. branchialis does not impair the health of fish in this area of the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, but the presence of T. murmanensis concurrently can potentiate its effect.  相似文献

Perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus were caught at various locations around Lake Constance (Bodensee). Infection of perch and roach with the eyeflukes Diplostomum spathaceum and Tylodelphis clavata was greatest in the western location (Bottighofen). The varied occurrence of parasite species at different locations indicated that maximum interchange between fish populations was slight. Whitefish Coregonus lavaretus migrating up the River Rhine were less infected with both the tapeworm Proteocephalus exiguus and the copepod Ergasilus sieboldi than whitefish from the middle of the lake. Some of the parasites had already left their hosts. Newly established infections were not found in migrating whitefish.  相似文献

A new species of Dendromunna and two new species of Dendrotion are described from abundant material collected in the Rockall Trough region of the north-east Atlantic. The taxonomy of the little known benthic deep-sea asellote isopod family Dendrotionidae is reviewed and keys provided for genera and species. Also diagnosed and described are two new species belonging to a new genus of siphonostomatoid copepod found as ectoparasites on the walking legs of the new Dendromunna. The new parasites belong in the Rhizorhina group of genera within the family Nicothoidae.  相似文献

This study describes the community of all metazoan parasites from 14 individuals of thicklip wrasse, Hemigymnus melapterus, from Lizard Island, Australia. All fish were parasitized, and 4,649 parasite individuals were found. Twenty-six parasite species were identified although only 6 species were abundant and prevalent: gnathiid isopods, the copepod Hatschekia hemigymni, the digenean Callohelmis pichelinae, and 3 morphotypes of tetraphyllidean cestode larvae. We analyzed whether the body size and microhabitat of the parasites and size of the host affected understanding of the structure of the parasite community. We related the abundance, biovolume, and density of parasites with the host body size and analyzed the abundances and volumetric densities of some parasite species within microhabitats. Although the 2 most abundant species comprised 75% of all parasite individuals, 4 species, each in similar proportion, comprised 85% of the total biovolume. Although larger host individuals had higher richness, abundance, and biovolume of parasites than smaller individuals, overall parasite volumetric density actually decreased with the host body size. Moreover, parasites exhibited abundances and densities significantly different among microhabitats; some parasite species depended on the area available, whereas others selected a specific microhabitat. Parasite and habitat size exhibited interesting relationships that should be considered more frequently. Considerations of these parameters improve understanding of parasite community structure and how the parasites use their habitats.  相似文献

This is the first study on parasites of cultured Mytilus galloprovincialis L. in Greek waters, and is based on samples collected every 2 to 3 mo between September 2000 and November 2001 at 3 stations in the Thermaikos Gulf. Each sample comprised 40 mussels. We found 4 metazoan parasite species: hydroid Eugymnanthea inquilina, gill turbellarian Urastoma cyprinae, trematode Proctoces maculatus and gut copepod Mytilicola intestinalis. Of 840 mussels examined, 406 (48.3%) mussels were harbouring hydroids of E. inquilina, 278 (33.1%) were infested with U. cyprinae, 94 (11.2%) were infested with M. intestinalis, and only 7 (0.8%) were infested with P. maculatus. The prevalence and intensity of these parasites were related to temperature and pollution. Mussels infested with these parasites had significantly lower condition indices than non-infested mussels; larger mussels were more often infested than smaller ones.  相似文献

Immunocytochemical, light microscopy and ultrastructural studies were conducted on gill of sea bream, Sparus aurata L., naturally parasitized with the important parasitic copepod Ergasilus sp. to assess pathology and cellular responses. Thirty-seven S. aurata were examined from a fish farm; 26 (70%) were parasitized, with infection intensity ranging from 3 to 55 parasites per fish. Hosts were divided into two groups, lightly infected fish (<15 parasites per fish) and heavily infected fish (>15 parasites per fish). In histological sections, the copepod encircled gill lamellae with its second antennae, compressed the epithelium, provoked hyperplasia and hemorrhage, occluded arteries and often caused lamellar disruption. Fusion of the secondary lamellae due to epithelial hyperplasia was common in all infected fish; heavily infected fish showed more intense branchial inflammation. In both healthy and infected fish, mast cells (MCs) were free within the connective tissue inside and outside the blood vessels of the primary lamellae and made close contact with vascular endothelial cells, mucous cells and rodlet cells (RCs). MCs were irregular in shape with a cytoplasm filled by numerous electron-dense, membrane-bound granules. Immunostaining of primary and secondary gill filaments with an antibody against the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) piscidin 3 (anti-piscidin 3 antibody, anti-HAGR) revealed a subpopulation of MCs that were positive. These MCs were more abundant in gills of heavily infected fish than in either lightly infected or uninfected fish (ANOVA, P<0.05). Our report documents the response of gill to ectoparasite infection and provides further evidence that mast cells and their AMPs may play a role in responding to branchial ectoparasite infections.  相似文献
