Seasonal changes in spatial distribution of search effort of birds that prey on small mammals were studied in two structurally different coniferous forest habitats in the northern boreal zone in SE Norway. During the season with snow cover both the proportion of Microtus relative to that of Clethrionomys in the predators' diet, and their use of a clear-cut relative to that of older forest were lower than during the snow-free season. This was related to a lower relative availability of prey ( Microtus agrestis and M. oeconomus ) in the clear-cut when the ground was snow-covered than when it was snow-free. Based on this local pattern I suggest the following explanation for differences in migratory strategy between raptors that prey on small mammals in Fennoscandian boreal zones: species that migrate to snow-free areas in winter are either adapted to hunt by the energetically expensive method of quartering in open grassland habitats, where prey ( Microtus ) availability is relatively low during periods with snow cover (hen harrier Circus cyaneus , short-eared owl Asio flammeus , and longeared owl A. otus ), or by sit-and-wait in open grassland and forest habitats, the latter with relatively high prey availability during periods with snow cover, but unable to locate concealed prey (kestrel Falco tinnuculus , common buzzard Buteo huteo , and roughlegged buzzard B. lagopus ). In contrast, species that remain in areas with permanent snow cover during winter use the energetically cheap sit-and-wait tactic, and are able to hunt in closed forest habitat and localize concealed prey (the remaining owl species). Interspecific differences in prey availability as determined by hunting habitat and hunting mode is probably more important in shaping the migration patterns of Fennoscandian owls than is nest site availability.  相似文献

Land conversion for agriculture is an increasing threat to biodiversity conservation, but its ecological effects on African birds is practically unknown. We investigated the impacts of agriculture on the diet and productivity of a small, disjunct population of Mackinder's eagle owls ( Bubo capensis mackinderi  ) in central Kenya. Owl diet was determined by analysis of pellets and other remains and compared to small mammal populations estimated by live trapping in two habitats. Small mammal abundance was low and averaged 7.4 small mammals/ha in farms and 0.5 small mammals/ha in grassland. Owls consumed a wide diversity of prey. The majority were mammals (87%) followed by birds (7%) and insects (5%). The percentage of small mammals in owl diet correlated positively with the relative abundance of small mammals during monthly trapping sessions. Diet composition did not influence owl breeding success. Farming activities affected owl diet composition through crop production. The amount of maize, peas, and carrots growing in farms was correlated with the abundance of Mastomys sp. and Procavia sp. in the owl's diet. Agricultural activities had a large effect on Mackinder's eagle owl diet by increasing the abundance of certain small-mammal prey and attracting owl prey to farms, though farming practices harmful to owls were observed.  相似文献

Owl pellets have long been used to analyze communities of small mammals, while analogous analyses of faeces of mammal carnivores are not available. We demonstrate that common genet (Genetta genetta) scats can be used as a reliable method to sample small mammal communities and to monitor their variations. We have compiled data on 6350 small mammal remains of 18 species found in scats from 51 different latrines in a 1200 km2 area of northeastern Spain. Genet scats sampled effectively 95.6% of the small mammal species ranging in size from 2.7 to 385 g. Spatial patterns of diet composition along environmental gradients of elevation, climate and land-use matched expected changes in small mammal communities along these gradients according to ecological requirements of prey species. Frequencies of occurrence of prey in genet scats were strongly correlated with frequencies of occurrence in barn owl (Tyto alba) pellets. Genet scats included two forest species not preyed upon by owls, whereas only one species was not preyed upon by genets. Forests species were more frequent in genet than in barn owl diets after correcting for environmental effects, whereas the opposite was true for open-habitat and synanthropic species. Scats of generalist carnivores can be used to estimate the spatial patterns of distribution and abundance of small mammal communities. Genet scats in fact overcome some of the limitations of more traditional sampling methods (live-trapping and owl diets), as genets were less selective and their diets reflect more accurately changes in community composition.  相似文献

During 1954–56 we made a study of the numerical relationships between a population of Tawny owls ( Strix aluco ) and populations of their main prey species, the Bank vole ( Clethrionomys glareolus ) and the Wood mouse ( Apodemus sylvaticus ), in a 48.6-ha area of mainly deciduous woodland near Oxford. The owls were censused by plotting their territorial challenges (hooting), the rodents by the capture-mark-recapture technique. Since the rodents were marked with numbered monel metal leg rings, we were able to recover a proportion of these in the pellets of undigested material cast by the owls.
The results for Bank voles, which were the more numerous of the two prey species, indicated that 20–30% of the standing crop was removed by owls in any two-month period. We also made an independent estimate of predation rate from the number of rings recovered from owl pellets in relation to the number of ringed rodents released into the population each two months. This coincided with the limits indicated by the first method for voles (20-30% removed of the standing crop each 2 months).
Wood mice were scarcer than Bank voles and were not amenable to satisfactory capturemark-recapture analysis but, when treated on the system of recovery of rings in owl pellets, we found that they were preyed upon relatively more heavily than were the voles. Of the latter 18–46% of the marked animals were recovered in the owl pellets compared with 28–70% of the marked mice. Either the mice were preferred prey or they were more vulnerable to owl predation by reason of their preference for more open habitats.  相似文献

Ecological theory suggests that prey size should increase with predator size, but this trend may be masked by other factors affecting prey selection, such as environmental constraints or specific prey preferences of predator species. Owls are an ideal case study for exploring how predator body size affects prey selection in the presence of other factors due to the ease of analyzing their diets from owl pellets and their widespread distributions, allowing interspecific comparisons between variable habitats. Here, we analyze various dimensions of prey resource selection among owls, including prey size, taxonomy (i.e., whether or not particular taxa are favored regardless of their size), and prey traits (movement type, social structure, activity pattern, and diet). We collected pellets of five sympatric owl species (Athene noctua, Tyto alba, Asio otus, Strix aluco, and Bubo bubo) from 78 sites across the Mediterranean Levant. Prey intake was compared between sites, with various environmental variables and owl species as predictors of abundance. Despite significant environmental impacts on prey intake, some key patterns emerge among owl species studied. Owls select prey by predator body size: Larger owls tend to feed on wider ranges of prey sizes, leading to higher means. In addition, guild members show both specialization and generalism in terms of prey taxa, sometimes in contrast with the expectations of the predator–prey body size hypothesis. Our results suggest that while predator body size is an important factor in prey selection, taxon specialization by predator species also has considerable impact.  相似文献

Owl pellets as a source of DNA for genetic studies of small mammals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Owl pellets contain a good skeletal record of the small mammals consumed, and correspond to the undigested portions of prey which are regurgitated. These pellets are easy to find at the roosting site of owls. As it has been demonstrated that amplifiable DNA can be isolated from ancient bone remains, the possibility of using owl pellets as a source of DNA for small mammal genetics studies via the polymerase chain reaction has been investigated. The main uncertainties when isolating DNA from such a material are firstly the possibility that the extracted DNA would be too degraded during the digestion in the stomach of the owl, and secondly that extensive cross-contaminations could occur among the different prey consumed. The results obtained clearly demonstrate that cross-contamination does not occur, and that mitochondrial and nuclear DNA can be amplified using skulls of small mammals found in owl pellets as a source of DNA. The relative efficiency of two methods of DNA extraction is estimated and discussed. Thus, owl pellets represent a non-invasive sampling technique which provides a valuable source of DNA for studying population genetics of small mammals.  相似文献

Some 5000 Barn owl pellets, collected from sites in East Norfolk during the past decade, have been examined. The most important prey species, by weight, were the Field vole (Microtus agrestis) 52%, the Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) 17%, and the Common shrew (Sorex araneus) 12%. The prey varies over different habitats; Wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and Bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) forming a higher proportion in localities with hedges, scrub and woodland than in open grasslands. These results are comparable with those of other recent work. However, when compared with studies conducted over 30 years ago, it would appear that the Field vole now constitutes a higher proportion, and the Brown rat a lower proportion, of the prey taken.  相似文献

We assessed the diet of pine marten (Martes martes) expanding in the heavily human-altered agricultural plain of the River Po, northern Italy. Between February 2008 and November 2009, surveys were carried out twice a week during seasonal sampling sessions of three to four consecutive weeks. To distinguish the faecal samples from those of sympatric carnivores, a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method was applied. The availability of small mammals was assessed by the analysis of 59 barn owl (Tyto alba) pellets. A total of 109 pine marten faeces were analysed. Its diet consisted of fruit, rodents, lagomorphs and birds. Seasonal variation occurred for fruit, which prevailed in summer, and rodents, which were more preyed upon in autumn. In winter, the diet of the pine marten was almost totally based on vertebrates, and lagomorphs were the main source of protein in summer. Use of small mammals differed significantly from their availability, voles, particularly bank vole Myodes glareolus, being preferred to mice (Apodemus sp.) and rats (Rattus sp.). Medium-size mammals formed about 18% of pine marten diet, a value generally reported for high-latitude habitats. In agricultural areas, the pine marten proved to be an opportunistic predator, able to face the reduced availability of small mammals by preying upon medium-size prey and fruit.  相似文献

Non-native invasive species threaten Galápagos’ endemic biodiversity, and increasing efforts are underway to protect its species from further harm. One such project is focused on the eradication of invasive rodents using rodenticide bait on Floreana, the archipelago’s sixth largest island. Short-eared owls (Asio flammeus galapagoensis) that consume poisoned rodents will, therefore, be at risk of secondary poisoning. If negatively impacted, it is not known to what degree the Floreana Island short-earned owl population is isolated, and whether potential re-colonization exists from its closest neighboring large population on Santa Cruz. Based on eight microsatellite loci and mtDNA control region sequence data from museum and contemporary samples, the short-eared owl populations on Floreana and Santa Cruz are not isolated from each other. However, gene flow is asymmetric from Floreana to Santa Cruz and not in the opposite direction. Morphometric data, including tarsus and bill size, and behavioral observations corroborate the genetic results and suggest that the Floreana population may possess unique traits compared to neighboring populations. For example, Floreana short-eared owls are more crepuscular than neighboring islands, which are predominately nocturnal, and were also non-responsive to inter-island call back recordings. Therefore, these results have important management implications concerning short-eared owl persistence on Floreana following rodenticide application. We recommend that managers implement additional precautions to protect the short-eared owl population until the risk of secondary poisoning has passed such as maintaining individuals in captivity. This study provides no evidence to suggest that short-eared owls are likely to disperse from Floreana’s closest large population on Santa Cruz if the local population is negatively impacted by rodenticide exposure, and the observed morphological and behavioral traits argue against translocating owls between islands.  相似文献

Inland vertebrate predators could enrich of nutrients the local top soils in the area surrounding their nests and dens by depositing faeces, urine, and prey remains and, thus, alter the dynamics of plant populations. Surprisingly, and in contrast with convincing evidence from coastal habitats, whether and how this phenomenon occurs in inland habitats is largely uncertain even though these habitats represent a major fraction of the earth''s surface. We investigated during two consecutive breeding seasons the potential enrichment of the top-soils associated with inland ground-nesting eagle owls Bubo bubo, as well as its possible consequences in the growth of two common annual grasses in southern Spain. Top-soils associated with owl nests differed strongly and significantly from control top-soils in chemical parameters, mainly fertility-related properties. Specifically, levels of available phosphorus, total nitrogen, organic matter, and available potassium were 49.1, 5.6, 3.1, and 2.7 times higher, respectively, in top-soils associated with owl nests as compared to control top-soils. Germination experiments in chambers indicated that nutrient enrichment by nesting owls enhanced seedling growth in both annual grasses (Phalaris canariensis and Avena sativa), with seedling size being 1.4–1.3 times higher in owl nest top-soils than in control top-soils. Our experimental study revealed that pervasive inland, predatory birds can profoundly enrich the topsoil around their nests and, thus, potentially enhance local vegetation growth. Because diverse inland vertebrate predators are widespread in most habitats they have a strong potential to enhance spatial heterogeneity, impinge on plant communities, and exert an overlooked effect on primary productivity worldwide.  相似文献

  • 1 Skeletal remains of greater white‐toothed shrew Crocidura russula were recovered from barn owl Tyto alba and kestrel Falco tinnunculus pellets collected at 15 locations in Counties Tipperary and Limerick in Ireland in September 2007 and March 2008. Seven greater white‐toothed shrews were trapped at four locations in Tipperary in March 2008. This is the first Irish record of C. russula and compelling evidence that the species is established in Ireland.
  • 2 The absence of C. russula from earlier surveys of owl pellets and small mammals in Ireland suggests a recent introduction by uncertain means, possibly since 2001. It seems likely that C. russula will expand its range in Ireland. Its impact on the ecology of habitats in which it is found is uncertain but may be considerable.

The last decade has seen a number of studies reporting the extraction of DNA from ancient sources, such as fossil bones. Owl pellets, which contain an excellent skeletal record of small mammals consumed, can be used in a non-invasive sampling method for genetic studies of free-ranging animals without the need for direct capture or even observation. Such a non-invasive sampling method will allow us to address questions that cannot be answered using conventional methods and will lead to a more integrated study of micromammals. In the present study, various protocols used for ancient DNA extraction were investigated, in order to determine the applicability of owl pellets as a source of DNA for phylogenetic and phylogeographical studies of micromammals. Of the 12 bone samples used in this study, 11 gave sequences of expected species ( Crocidura , Rattus and Mus ) and size (around 300 bp), using the pair of primers L14841/H15149, which target a highly conserved region of the cytochrome b gene. The results obtained demonstrate that mitochondrial DNA can be isolated and amplified using bones of micromammals found in barn owl ( Tyto alba ) pellets. The recovery of genetic data from owl pellets will enable the identification of prey species for several phylogenetic and phylogeographical studies of small mammals (Muridae and Insectivora) appearing in the owl's diet. The main advantages of this new approach are that (a) the pellets are very easy to find and collect, (b) the pellets can potentially provide a large number of individuals of small mammals, and (c) the method can cover a wide geographical area complementary to the range of owls of this type.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 85 , 331–340.  相似文献

In this study we examined predation by small felids upon small and medium-sized prey mammals in the central region of the Monte Desert. We analyzed the degree of vulnerability of prey mammals in relation to their habitat use patterns, modes of locomotion and age classes. Medium and small rodents were the predominant prey in the diet of small cats. The most consumed small mammal was Akodon molinae, which inhabits areas of dense cover, while species occurring in open habitats such as Eligmodontia typus were less consumed. Among medium-sized mammals, Galea leucoblephara that depends on patches with high plant cover for refuge was more consumed than Microcavia australis that lives in colonies and displays a complex set of antipredator strategies. Prey selectivity on small rodents showed that E. typus, which uses bipedal locomotion and an erratic escape behaviour, was consumed in greater proportion than its availability. We suggest that although its specialized locomotory mode would diminish predator attacks, its preference for open habitats would increase the probability of predator–prey encounter. Consumption of small mammals focuses mostly on adult individuals. However, we found a significant consumption of senile individuals of A. molinae, which points out that vulnerability tends to be high towards the age of maturity in this species.  相似文献

We compared the helminth communities of 5 owl species from Calabria (Italy) and evaluated the effect of phylogenetic and ecological factors on community structure. Two host taxonomic scales were considered, i.e., owl species, and owls vs. birds of prey. The latter scale was dealt with by comparing the data here obtained with that of birds of prey from the same locality and with those published previously on owls and birds of prey from Galicia (Spain). A total of 19 helminth taxa were found in owls from Calabria. Statistical comparison showed only marginal differences between scops owls (Otus scops) and little owls (Athene noctua) and tawny owls (Strix aluco). It would indicate that all owl species are exposed to a common pool of ‘owl generalist’ helminth taxa, with quantitative differences being determined by differences in diet within a range of prey relatively narrow. In contrast, birds of prey from the same region exhibited strong differences because they feed on different and wider spectra of prey. In Calabria, owls can be separated as a whole from birds of prey with regard to the structure of their helminth communities while in Galicia helminths of owls represent a subset of those of birds of prey. This difference is related to the occurrence in Calabria, but not Galicia, of a pool of ‘owl specialist’ species. The wide geographical occurrence of these taxa suggest that local conditions may determine fundamental differences in the composition of local communities. Finally, in both Calabria and Galicia, helminth communities from owls were species-poor compared to those from sympatric birds of prey. However, birds of prey appear to share a greater pool of specific helmith taxa derived from cospeciation processes, and a greater potential exchange of parasites between them than with owls because of phylogenetic closeness.  相似文献

  • 1.1. The food consumption, energy, nitrogen, fat, ash, calcium, phosphate and magnesium balances of the Eurasian kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), and screech owl (Otus kennicotti) are compared.
  • 2.2. Eurasian kestrel sample values were significantly greater than screech owl sample values in the energy, nitrogen, calcium, phosphate and magnesium content in pellets, and calcium content in excrement. Phosphate content in excrement was significantly greater in screech owl samples than in Eurasian kestrel samples.
  • 3.3. The Eurasian kestrel ingested significantly greater amounts of calcium and phosphate, egested via excrement significantly greater amounts of ash, excreted or egested significantly greater amounts of energy, nitrogen, calcium and phosphate via excrement and pellets, and excreted significantly greater amounts of magnesium via excrement than did the screech owl. The screech owl assimilated significantly greater amounts of ash than did the Eurasian kestrel.

We investigated a community of syntopically occurring horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros, R. euryale, R. ferrumequinum) in southern Slovakia. The faecal pellets of these bat species were collected in the field and later analysed under a dissecting microscope. The three species studied are known to be very similar as far as their ecology, echolocation and preferred habitats are concerned, but they diverge significantly in their body sizes. In this study, all three species fed predominantly on moths [59–80 percentage frequency (%f); 87–95 percentage volume (%vol)], but their diet compositions differed in the size of individuals consumed. The smallest bat species (R. hipposideros) fed only on the smallest moths (%f = 59; %vol = 87), the medium-sized species (R. euryale) mainly on medium-sized moths (%f = 60; %vol = 74) and the largest one (R. ferrumequinum) especially on the largest moths (%f = 54; %vol = 89). Despite similar preferred habitat and the main prey category, the rates of trophic niche overlap were surprisingly low. The trophic niche percentage overlap was 7–31% (computed from %f data) and 1–20% (computed from %vol data), respectively and suggests an extraordinary importance of mere divergences of bats in their body sizes for trophic niche partitioning and stable species coexistence.  相似文献
