Abstract. We examined claw characteristics of mud crabs (Eurypanopeus depressus, Rhithropanopeus harrisii) to determine if one crab species was potentially more powerful than the other. We related our findings to the abilities of individuals of each species to open epifaunal mytiliform bivalves (Ischadium recurvum; Mytilopsis leucophaeata) that occur on beds of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) in mesohaline Chesapeake Bay. There were high correlations between claw width or height and claw length, and between claw length and carapace width for both mud crab species. The mechanical advantage or “grip strength’ of the crusher and cutter claws of both species did not change with crab size (carapace width) and did not differ between sexes in each species, nor did the cutter data differ between species. However, individuals of E. depressus had a significantly stronger crusher claw grip than did those of R. harrisii. Data on mechanical advantage for both species were similar to values reported in the literature for members of other xanthid crab species. These values in turn overlapped those reported for calappid, cancrid, majid, and grapsid crabs, and were greater than those of various species of portunid crabs and individual species of fiddler crab, lobster, crayfish, and ghost shrimp. When simultaneously presented with the two species of bivalves, the mud crabs E. depressus chose mussels of M. leucophaeata first and crabs of R. harrisii chose mussels of I. recurvum first about two‐thirds of the time; ultimately, the crabs ate both bivalve species in >50% of the choice experiments. The size range in E. depressus was greater than that in R. harrisii, and crabs of E. depressus opened larger bivalves than did crabs of R. harrisii, although similar‐sized individuals of the two crab species overlapped in their ability to open bivalves of both species. In Mytilopsis leucophaeata, there is probably no size refuge from predation by the mud crabs whereas the larger mussels of I. recurvum do have a refuge in size.  相似文献

  • Species with vast production of dust‐like windborne seeds, such as orchids, should not be limited by seed dispersal. This paradigm, however, does not fit recent studies showing that many sites suitable for orchids are unoccupied and most seeds land close to their maternal plant. To explore this issue, we studied seed dispersal and gene flow of two forest orchid species, Epipactis atrorubens and Cephalanthera rubra, growing in a fragmented landscape of forested limestone hills in southwest Bohemia, Czech Republic.
  • We used a combination of seed trapping and plant genotyping methods (microsatellite DNA markers) to quantify short‐ and long‐distance dispersal, respectively. In addition, seed production of both species was estimated.
  • We found that most seeds landed very close to maternal plants (95% of captured seeds were within 7.2 m) in both species, and dispersal distance was influenced by forest type in E. atrorubens. In addition, C. rubra showed clonal reproduction (20% of plants were of clonal origin) and very low fruiting success (only 1.6% of plants were fruiting) in comparison with E. atrorubens (25.7%). Gene flow was frequent up to 2 km in C. rubra and up to 125 km in E. atrorubens, and we detected a relatively high dispersal rate among regions in both species.
  • Although both species occupy similar habitats and have similar seed dispersal abilities, C. rubra is notably rarer in the study area. Considerably low fruiting success in this species likely limits its gene flow to longer distances and designates it more sensitive to habitat loss and fragmentation.

Abstract
  • 1 The macadamia nut borer Thaumatotibia (Cryptophlebia) batrachopa and the litchi moth Cryptophlebia peltastica are Afrotropical species causing extensive damage to cultivated macadamias and litchis in the northernmost provinces in South Africa. Cryptophlebia peltastica also occurs as natural populations throughout the country.
  • 2 To analyse the population genetic structure of the two species, amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis was conducted. Patterns of genetic diversity in C. peltastica populations in the Mpumalanga province, where the species is controlled, were compared with those in the Western Cape, where populations occur under natural conditions.
  • 3 Gene diversity was high within T. batrachopa populations (H = 0.2219) with significant genetic differentiation among populations (Gst = 0.358). Cluster analysis showed that geographical populations were closely related and extensive divergence was found over local scales.
  • 4 Similar to that of T. batrachopa, genetic diversity and population differentiation was high within both C. peltastica Mpumalanga and Western Cape populations (H = 0.1906 and 0.1687 and Gst = 0.4124 and 0.3799, respectively).
  • 5 It is suggested that the population genetic structure of both species is influenced by their limited ability to disperse. In addition, chemical control of C. peltastica in the Mpumalanga province has not succeeded in reducing the population size, but the C. peltastica population subdivision in the Western Cape may be influenced by the limited distribution of host plants in this region.

Abstract.
  • 1 An examination of phenotypic variation in colour pattern was carried out on four Eristalis hoverfly species using museum material.
  • 2 The amount of phenotypic variation varied substantially among the species with E.arbustorum being the most variable. The other species showed a wide colour pattern range but less variation within that range (E.abusivus and E.nemorum), or a narrow range of colour variation (E.horticola).
  • 3 Sexual colour dimorphism was apparent in all four species, but most pronounced in E.abusivus and E.nemorum.
  • 4 There were good phenotype-season relationships shown by both sexes in all species, except for female E.abusivus and E.nemorum, with paler insects being more abundant during the warmer summer months.
  • 5 Female, but not male, E.arbustorum collected at inland sites were on average paler than those collected at coastal sites. This observation is considered with respect to temperature during the developmental stages.
  • 6 The function of colour plasticity in hoverflies is discussed with reference to the need to maintain optimal thermal conditions for activity.

Host selection and sex ratio in a heteronomous hyperparasitoid   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract.
  • 1 Encarsia tricolor Förster is a heteronomous hyperparasitoid: females develop as primary endoparasitoids of Homoptera, whereas males develop hyperparasitically in primary endoparasitoids, including conspecific females.
  • 2 When offered pupae of Encarsia inaron (Walker) or conspecific pupae, E.tricolor showed a distinct preference to exploit E.inaron for male production.
  • 3 Parasitoids were given the opportunity to gain different types of ovipositional experience on male and female hosts and were then offered patches containing mixtures of male and female hosts in various ratios. The mean sex ratio which they laid was not dependent on the relative availability of each type of host, whereas prior ovipositional experience had a significant effect.
  • 4 Adaptive reasons for the observed oviposition strategies are suggested.

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 We investigated effective thermal environments and behavioural and physiological mechanisms for thermoregulation in two sympatric desert robber flies, Promachus giganteus (Hine) and Efferia texana (Banks). Although similar in body shape and colour, P. giganteus are 4–8 times heavier than E. texana.
  • 2 During midday, operative temperatures near the ground were substantially higher for P. giganteus (56–73°C) than for E. texana (54–63°C). Correspondingly, P. giganteus generally perched at greater heights above the ground than did E. texana.
  • 3 Both species maintained thoracic temperatures between 40 and 45°C during most of the day. However, differences between thoracic and abdominal temperatures for individual flies were significantly lower in P. giganteus than in E. texana.
  • 4 In the laboratory, P. giganteus regulated thoracic temperature by pumping haemolymph into the abdomen. This ability may have accounted for the smaller differences observed between thoracic and abdominal temperatures in P. giganteus and may have allowed this species to search for food and mates during midday when E. texana sought shade.

As the rate of biological invasions continues to increase, a growing number of aquatic introduced species are becoming globally widespread. Despite this ubiquitous phenomenon, rarely do we discover aquatic invaders early enough to allow the possibility of eradication. Recently, the North American Harris mud crab (Rhithropanopeus harrisii) was found in the waters adjacent to the Panama Canal and herein we provide an assessment of the crab’s distribution in Panama to evaluate the possibility of eradication. Using salinity tolerance experiments, we also evaluate the potential for further spread of this crab within the Canal. Our results suggest that populations of R. harrisii are currently limited to two manmade lagoons which are adjacent to the Panama Canal. Our experiments suggest that both juvenile and adult R. harrisii can survive in salinities found outside its current range in Panama. Although it is difficult to predict the potential for future spread and impacts in Panama, current management strategies could reduce the probability for spread locally as well as elsewhere in the world given the intensity of shipping in this region. The current containment of this invader suggests that a localized eradication may be possible.  相似文献

  1. The Plusiinae subfamily has many polyphagous species, many of which occur in South America. Chrysodeixis includens and Rachiplusia nu are two representatives that mainly occurs in soybeans, cotton, common beans, sunflower and alfalfa.
  2. A population genetic study of C. includens and R. nu collected in the Southern Cone of America was performed using a partial COI gene sequencing data and compared with specimens from other American countries.
  3. Six haplotypes were identified in C. includens populations of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, organized within a star-like haplotype network, with the most common haplotype identified as Chin_MC.
  4. R. nu populations are more diverse and stable in comparison to C. includens. Populations from Argentina and Uruguay had the highest haplotype diversity, sharing five haplotypes and putatively indicating haplotype exchange.
  5. Demographic change analysis suggested a recent population expansion of C. includens over the American continent.
  6. Some C. includens haplotypes were country-specific, suggesting population expansion in the countries where specimens were collected.

Abstract.
  • 1 Foraging patterns of the squash beetle, Epilachna borealis Fabricius (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), in field cages are not consistent with the hypothesis that this beetle avoids leaves in which its feeding damage has caused the induction of cucurbitacins.
  • 2 E.borealis feeding does not induce accumulation of cucurbitacins inside or outside of feeding trenches.
  • 3 Cucurbitacins do not reduce the survival or growth rate of E. borealis larvae.
  • 4 High concentrations of cucurbitacins fail to deter E.borealis feeding; rather, cucurbitacins are feeding stimulants for squash beetles.
  • 5 Trenching behaviour in E.borealis is facultative and correlates with leaf turgor and the degree to which sticky phloem sap oozes from damaged leaves.
  • 6 Mucilaginous phloem sap in many curcurbit species inhibits feeding by E.borealis when it is applied to beetle mouthparts.

  • 1 Cyclomorphosis is a well known phenomenon in Daphnia that involves a regular, seasonal, or induced change in body allometry. Long helmets and tail spines were induced in laboratory cultures of Daphnia lumholtzi with temperature of 31 °C as the proximal cue (temperature of locally occurring peak abundance in Kentucky Lake). The effect was greater in embryos than juveniles or adults exposed to the temperature cue.
  • 2 The temperature cue appears to have a threshold value (animals cultured at 25 or 28 °C did not develop elongated helmets or spines). The helmet and spine length receded both with D. lumholtzi kept at a constant 31 °C temperature and when water temperature was decreased.
  • 3 The induced helmet in this experiment (0.66 mm, 1.0 mm animal) was significantly longer than values reported in the literature for induction by planktivorous fish kairomones (0.25 mm, 1.2 mm animal). The strong response to a proximal cue of temperature may require the second weaker chemical cue for maintenance. It is suggested that a synergistic explanation with two cues may be more appropriate for cyclomorphosis induction and maintenance in Daphnia lumholtzi that could be tested with further studies.

  • 1 Adult Ips typographus were collected using pheromone traps at a locality in the eastern part of Austria between 1995 and 2004. The occurrence of two pathogens, Gregarina typographi and Chytridiopsis typographi, was determined throughout the period of beetle swarming activities. Weekly and annual data sets were then analysed by smoothing statistical techniques and epidemiological models.
  • 2 The pathogens spread differently within the beetle population with respect to their biological characteristics: infectious forms of C. typographi were immediately available after their development in the insect's gut, but not those of G. typographi.
  • 3 Both of the pathogens had a low prevalence in swarming beetles, especially C. typographi, and there was no evidence of a between‐year or within‐year epidemiological process. Conversely, it was shown that G. typographi has a positive effect on the rate of increase of trapped beetles.
  • 4 Fitting a nonlinear model to the data suggested that: (i) this was due to a higher catch ability of beetles infected with G. typographi than of healthy beetles; (ii) when this effect is taken into account, G. typographi induces a specific within‐year low mortality in beetle populations; and (iii) beetle populations increase naturally within a year, despite their infection by both pathogens. No clear effect of C. typographi was detected in the trapped data set when the prevalence of this species was high in beetle populations collected from trees.
  • 5 It is hypothesized that both pathogens induce different behavioural effects on their host, resulting in: (i) favouring the trapping of G. typographi‐infected beetles and (ii) hindering the capture of C. typographi‐infected individuals. This could be the result of both of the pathogens having an opposite effect on the flight abilities of beetles and/or on the beetles' response to the aggregation pheromones used in the traps.

SUMMARY.
  • 1 The concomitant diet vertical migrations of the predaceous leech Erpobdella montezuma and its pelagic amphipod prey (Hyalella montezuma) were monitored for 1 year in Montezuma Well, Arizona, U.S.A.
  • 2 High densities of H. montezuma occurred in the subsurface strata of the water column during the day, but a substantial portion of the population migrated into the surface 1 m at sunset. E. montezuma remained in the lower water strata during the day, but migrated vertically after sunset to exploit the high densities of H. montezuma near the surface. Densities of E. montezuma progressively increased in the upper strata of the water column after sunset as light energy fell below 1 μEin m?2 s?1.
  • 3 It is suggested that the synchronized nocturnal migrations of the predator E. montezuma in relation to its prey H. montezuma, increases the foraging efficiency of the leech in the highly predictable environment of Montezuma Well.

  • Important evidence is reported on the antimicrobial and antagonistic properties of bacterial endophytes in Echinacea purpurea and their role in the modulation of plant synthesis of bioactive compounds. Here, endophytic fungi were isolated from E. purpurea, and the dual culture approach was applied to deepen insights into the complex plant–microbiome interaction network.
  • In vitro experiments were carried out to evaluate the species specificity of the interaction between host (E. purpurea) and non-host (E. angustifolia and Nicotiana tabacum) plant tissues and bacterial or fungal endophytes isolated from living E. purpurea plants to test interactions between fungal and bacterial endophytes.
  • A higher tropism towards plant tissue and growth was observed for both fungal and bacterial isolates compared to controls without plant tissue. The growth of all fungi was significantly inhibited by several bacterial strains that, in turn, were scarcely affected by the presence of fungi. Finally, E. purpurea endophytic bacteria were able to inhibit mycelial growth of the phytopathogen Botrytis cinerea.
  • Bacteria and fungi living in symbiosis with wild Echinacea plants interact with each other and could represent a potential source of bioactive compounds and a biocontrol tool.

Abstract.
  • 1 Three species of Eupteryx, E.aurata, E.cyclops and E.urticae are regularly found on stinging nettles in South Wales.
  • 2 E.aurata host alternates between nettles in spring and autumn, and Heraclewn, Eupatorium and Mentha species in summer. E.cyclops and E.urticae attack only nettles.
  • 3 All species are host specific during oviposition and show preferences to lay eggs in discrete plant regions.
  • 4 A Mymarid egg parasite of the genus Anagrus was reared more commonly from eggs laid in nettles than from eggs laid in alternative hosts.
